Fungi are among the most diverse and ecologically important kingdoms in life. However, the distributional ranges of fungi remain largely unknown as do the ecological mechanisms that shape their distributions1,2. To provide an integrated view of the spatial and seasonal dynamics of fungi, we implemented a globally distributed standardized aerial sampling of fungal spores3. The vast majority of operational taxonomic units were detected within only one climatic zone, and the spatiotemporal patterns of species richness and community composition were mostly explained by annual mean air temperature. Tropical regions hosted the highest fungal diversity except for lichenized, ericoid mycorrhizal and ectomycorrhizal fungi, which reached their peak diversity in temperate regions. The sensitivity in climatic responses was associated with phylogenetic relatedness, suggesting that large-scale distributions of some fungal groups are partially constrained by their ancestral niche. There was a strong phylogenetic signal in seasonal sensitivity, suggesting that some groups of fungi have retained their ancestral trait of sporulating for only a short period. Overall, our results show that the hyperdiverse kingdom of fungi follows globally highly predictable spatial and temporal dynamics, with seasonality in both species richness and community composition increasing with latitude. Our study reports patterns resembling those described for other major groups of organisms, thus making a major contribution to the long-standing debate on whether organisms with a microbial lifestyle follow the global biodiversity paradigms known for macroorganisms4,5.

Successful alien species may experience a period of quiescence, known as the lag phase, before becoming invasive and widespread. The existence of lags introduces severe uncertainty in risk analyses of aliens as the present state of species is a poor predictor of future distributions, invasion success and impact. Predicting a species' ability to invade and pose negative impacts requires a quantitative understanding of the commonality and magnitude of lags, environmental factors and mechanisms likely to terminate lag. Using herbarium and climate data, we analysed over 5,700 time series (species × regions) in 3,505 naturalized plant species from nine regions in temperate and tropical climates to quantify lags and test whether there have been shifts in the species' climatic space during the transition from the lag phase to the expansion phase. Lags were identified in 35% of the assessed invasion events. We detected phylogenetic signals for lag phases in temperate climate regions and that annual self-fertilizing species were less likely to experience lags. Where lags existed, they had an average length of 40 years and a maximum of 320 years. Lengthy lags (>100 years) were more likely to occur in perennial plants and less frequent in self-pollinating species. For 98% of the species with a lag phase, the climate spaces sampled during the lag period differed from those in the expansion phase based on the assessment of centroid shifts or degree of climate space overlap. Our results highlight the importance of functional traits for the onset of the expansion phase and suggest that climate discovery may play a role in terminating the lag phase. However, other possibilities, such as sampling issues and climate niche shifts, cannot be ruled out.

Numerous studies have shown reduced performance in plants that are surrounded by neighbours of the same species1,2, a phenomenon known as conspecific negative density dependence (CNDD)3. A long-held ecological hypothesis posits that CNDD is more pronounced in tropical than in temperate forests4,5, which increases community stabilization, species coexistence and the diversity of local tree species6,7. Previous analyses supporting such a latitudinal gradient in CNDD8,9 have suffered from methodological limitations related to the use of static data10-12. Here we present a comprehensive assessment of latitudinal CNDD patterns using dynamic mortality data to estimate species-site-specific CNDD across 23 sites. Averaged across species, we found that stabilizing CNDD was present at all except one site, but that average stabilizing CNDD was not stronger toward the tropics. However, in tropical tree communities, rare and intermediate abundant species experienced stronger stabilizing CNDD than did common species. This pattern was absent in temperate forests, which suggests that CNDD influences species abundances more strongly in tropical forests than it does in temperate ones13. We also found that interspecific variation in CNDD, which might attenuate its stabilizing effect on species diversity14,15, was high but not significantly different across latitudes. Although the consequences of these patterns for latitudinal diversity gradients are difficult to evaluate, we speculate that a more effective regulation of population abundances could translate into greater stabilization of tropical tree communities and thus contribute to the high local diversity of tropical forests.

Hops are grown mainly for the brewing market due to the rich chemical composition that gives beer aroma and bitterness. Brazil is one of the largest beer producers and consumers in the world and one of the largest hop importers. There is growing demand and interest in producing hops for domestic supply; however, as this crop originates from a temperate climate and the Northern Hemisphere, it is important to carry out research that describes the development of hops in a tropical climate to provide information on its cultivation in Brazil, as well as to determine its behavior in organic cultivation. A randomized block design was adopted, the treatments consisted of two cropping systems, conventional and organic, for Hallertau Mittelfrueh variety cultivation, with four blocks and three plants per plot. Gas exchange analyzes of plants under both cultivation systems were performed to obtain measurements of A, gs, Ci, E, WUE and A/Ci, morphometric and yield analyzes were also carried out. In comparison with the plants of the organic system, the plants of the conventional cultivation had greater photosynthetic efficiency; however, the practices adopted in the organic cultivation system provided the plants with greater productive capacity. The existing roofing system in tropical climates is not adapting to the worsening climate, along with the demand for sustainable building design; this study introduced a pioneering cool roof system to reform the traditional roofing system. The pioneering cool roof system is composed of white reflective coating, hollow foamed concrete roof (HFCR) tile, and a sustainable active reflective insulation (RI) system. Despite the complex integrated roof technologies, the study adopted 3D CFD numerical simulation for an in-depth and frontier thermal distribution analysis and fluid flow presentation. The outcomes of the numerical model were compared with field measurements for validation purposes, which resulted in just a 3.31 % error. The internal attic was 35.64 °C despite the roof exterior achieving 54.59 °C after receiving an average 680 W/m2 solar radiation source. After the heat flux was hugely terminated by the HFCR tile and sustainable active RI system, the heat flux magnitude attained in the internal attic was 1.0822 W/m2, and the active RI system removed 96.29 % of heat flux excellently. Meanwhile, the proposed roofing design's energy-saving performance was 27.5 %. Increasing need for food resources, State of Indonesia to strive to maximize the output of food production. Not only in agriculture but also aquaculture results are also trying to be improved. This is also supported by the increase of Indonesia’s national fish consumption rate from 50.69 Kg per capita in 2018 to 55.37 Kg per capita in 2021. Recent aquaculture research only explored topics about monitoring the cultivation environment. But there have been no studies exploring how bad the impact of weather on the process of farming. Hence, this study aims to measure the influence of weather on freshwater aquaculture pond water quality and analyze its impact on fish growth namely Oreochromis Sp., using pH sensors and dissolved oxygen (DO). Then a weather simulation was carried out based on Indonesia’s tropical climate, which majorly consists of sunny and rainy weather. The experimental results indicate the instability of the pH value during the rainy period. DO values tend to decrease at the end of periods of sunny weather. Moreover, fish growth analysis showed that there was a decrease in food conversion ratio (FCR) by 0.956, specific growth rate (SGR) by 2.13% and survival rate (SR) by 5.715% during rainy weather. Highlights Fiber‐reinforced composites are widely used in civil engineering, aerospace, automotive, and medical sectors. However, these composites undergo aging due to factors such as temperature, humidity, load, and so on, during their usage. As a result, their performance deteriorates, and predicting their durability under real service conditions is a significant challenge. In order to better understand the durability of fiber‐reinforced composites, this article summarizes their microscopic aging mechanism under natural aging conditions and analyzes the changing rules of tensile, bending, and shear properties of composites under seven typical climate types, including tropical desert climate, temperate continental climate, temperate oceanic climate, Mediterranean climate, seasonal climate, tropical rainforest climate, and seawater immersion. This article reviews various durability prediction models, such as the Arrhenius model, prediction models based on residual modulus of elasticity and residual strength, and median strength regression analysis. To enhance the accuracy of aging life prediction during the natural aging process of composites, it is important to consider the influence of loads under real service conditions, incorporate different climatic types, utilize comprehensive mechanical property indices, establish an equivalent conversion relationship between natural aging and accelerated aging, and create a database with unified test standards. The aging mechanisms of FRP after exposure in natural aging environments are discussed. The tensile, bending, and shear properties of FRP after exposure under seven climate types are discussed. Assessing anthropogenic climate change in a regional context is challenging due to the spatial heterogeneity of climatic variables and is more complicated than at the global scale. Especially in the Tropics, such spatial variations are expected to increase, warranting the identification of homogeneous climatic zones for assessing regional climate change. The present study explores the ability of bioclimatic variables in defining regional climatic zones, and the detection of climate change therein. We hypothesize that the identification of homogeneous climatic zones based on bioclimatic variables could be an effective approach rather than the conventional extreme climate‐based indices to identify climate change signals. To demonstrate the hypothesis, bioclimatic variables representing the generalized climatic characteristics of a tropical river basin were derived from observed gridded datasets of rainfall and temperature. Clusters of homogeneous climatic zones were identified, and their temporal variations were analysed to examine the existence of climate change. The results indicate that despite the spatial heterogeneity in extreme climate‐based indices, the bioclimatic variables‐based approach renders a meaningful representation of the regional climatic pattern. Investigation of bioclimatic zones of the study area helped to identify a shift in its climatic zones with a slant towards drier conditions. Further, future changes in climatic zones were identified from 13 different GCMs that participated in the CMIP6, projecting drier conditions over the basin, with varying spatial extend based on future emission scenarios. The study significantly contributes towards the identification of climatologically fragile regions in changing climate, which is an essential component in developing any regional climate change adaptation and mitigation strategy. The present study was conducted to understand transcriptional response of skin fibroblast of yak (Bos grunniens) and cows of Bos indicus origin to hypoxia stress. Six primary fibroblast cell lines derived from three individuals each of Ladakhi yak (Bos grunniens) and Sahiwal cows (Bos indicus) were exposed to low oxygen concentration for a period of 24 h, 48 h and 72 h. The expression of 10 important genes known to regulate hypoxia response such as HIF1A, VEGFA, EPAS1, ATP1A1, GLUT1, HMOX1, ECE1, TNF-A, GPx and SOD were evaluated in fibroblast cells of Ladakhi yak (LAY-Fb) and Sahiwal cows (SAC-Fb) during pre- and post-hypoxia stress. A panel of 10 reference genes (GAPDH, RPL4, EEF1A1, RPS9, HPRT1, UXT, RPS23, B2M, RPS15, ACTB) were also evaluated for their expression stability to perform accurate normalization. The expression of HIF1A was significantly (p < 0.05) induced in both LAY-Fb (2.29-fold) and SAC-Fb (2.07-fold) after 24 h of hypoxia stress. The angiogenic (VEGFA), metabolic (GLUT1) and antioxidant genes (SOD and GPx) were also induced after 24 h of hypoxia stress. However, EPAS1 and ATP1A1 induced significantly (p < 0.05) after 48 h whereas, ECE1 expression induced significantly (p < 0.05) at 72 h after exposure to hypoxia. The TNF-alpha which is a pro-inflammatory gene induced significantly (p < 0.05) at 24 h in SAC-Fb and at 72 h in LAY-Fb. The induction of hypoxia associated genes indicated the utility of skin derived fibroblast as cellular model to evaluate transcriptome signatures post hypoxia stress in populations adapted to diverse altitudes. Riparian ecosystems are under a serious threat of invasion due to the clearance of riparian vegetation, which allows for increased light levels at ground level. This study presents the interactions between native Alternanthera sessilis (L.) R. Br. ex DC and invasive Alternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.) Griseb. during the colonization stage along a light gradient under tropical climate conditions. We conducted a 6 week growth experiment with monocultures of A. philoxeroides and A.sessilis and mixed communities of two species under four light levels (100%, 46%, 26% and 14% of full sunlight). Exposure to full sunlight (nearly 1800 μmol m−2 s−1) resulted in a significantly high biomass accrual in both species. However, biomass accrual did not correlate with the light intensity. At higher shade levels, reduction of lateral spread and shoot/root ratio was observed. Community composition had no influence on biomass accrual or morphological variations. Plasticity index values were approximately same in both species. Total relative yield was approximately two in all shade conditions, indicating that the two species interact neutrally along the light gradient. Therefore, the results of the study indicate that increased light levels will accelerate the proliferation of both species in riparian zones. Fungal diseases in Brazilian regions with tropical and subtropical climates reduce the production potential of corn crops. The use of fungicides is one of the strategies to maintain productivity. This study evaluated the agronomic performance and grain quality of corn hybrids associated with the preventive use of fungicides in subtropical environments. Six experiments were conducted in Santa Maria-RS, São Vicente do Sul-RS, and Frederico Westphalen-RS during two sowing seasons. The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design with a split-plot arrangement, in which the main plot consisted of two levels of the fungicide factor (with and without) and the sub-plot consisted of six levels of corn hybrids (AG9025, AS1730, P3016, MG300, DKB230, and FEROZ). A total of 216 experimental plots were evaluated for grain productivity, and eight plants per plot were evaluated for other traits, totaling 1,728 evaluated plants. Therefore, environmental conditions influence the interaction between the factors of fungicide use and hybrid cultivar positioning, with no significant interaction in years with a water deficit. Early sowings in subtropical environments indicate better agronomic performance and a lower percentage of moldy grains regardless of the cultivation location, contributing to grain quality. In a tropical savanna climate like Thailand, cassava can be planted all year round and harvested at 8 to 12 months after planting (MAP). However, it is not clear how water limitation during the dry season without rain affects carbon assimilation, partitioning, and yield. In this field investigation, six cassava genotypes were planted in the rainy season (August 2021) under continuous irrigation (control) or subjected to drought for 60 days from 3MAP to 5MAP during the dry season (November 2021 to January 2022) with no irrigation and rainfall. After that, the plants were rewatered and continued growing until harvest at 12MAP. After 60 days of stress, there were significant reductions in the mean net photosynthesis rate (Pn), petiole, and root dry weight (DW), and slight reductions in leaf, stem, and tuber DW. The mean starch concentrations were reduced by 42% and 16% in leaves and tubers, respectively, but increased by 12% in stems. At 6MAP after 30 days of rewatering, Pn fully recovered, and stem starch was remobilized resulting in a dramatic increase in the DW of all the organs. Although the mean tuber DW of the drought plants at 6MAP was significantly lower than that of the control, it was significantly higher at 12MAP. Moreover, the mean tuber starch concentration at 12MAP of the drought plants (18.81%) was also significantly higher than that of the controls (16.46%). In the drought treatment, the high-yielding varieties, RY9, RY72, KU50, and CMR38-125-77 were similarly productive in terms of tuber DW and starch concentration while the breeding line CM523-7 produced the lowest tuber biomass and significantly lower starch content. Therefore, for cassava planted in the rainy season in the tropical savanna climate, the exposure to drought during the early growth stage was more beneficial than the continuous irrigation. Malaysia, a country with a tropical climate characterized by consistent warmth and year-long high humidity, houses the perfect conditions for mushroom growth. Recently, there has been a surge in back-to-nature activities in Malaysia. However, many participants lack prior knowledge about the local flora and fungi, leading to a rise in mushroom poisoning cases, some of which have been fatal. Despite thorough research, there is a notable lack of identification studies specifically focused on mushroom species in Malaysia. Identifying these species is crucial for medical providers to effectively counteract the toxins from ingested mushrooms and also serves as an important educational tool. This study aims to determine the most suitable architecture for mushroom identification, focusing specifically on mushroom species found in Malaysia. A dataset of these mushrooms was curated, augmented, and processed through multiple variants of Vision Transformers (ViTs) and ResNet models, with uniform hyperparameters to ensure fairness. Maxillofacial prosthesis play an important role in the rehabilitation of patients with facial defects resulting from trauma, surgery or congenital anomalies. This review article discusses different categories of materials including acrylic resin, vinyl polymer, chlorinated polyethylene, polyurethane and silicone elastomers and highlights their advantages and limitations. In particular, the current materials used in maxillofacial prosthetics, i.e. silicone material, RTV (room-temperature vulcanized) silicone and HTV (high-temperature vulcanized) silicone are highlighted focusing on the prevailing challenges and their physico-mechanical properties for maxillofacial prosthesis application. Finally, the effect of tropical climate and further perspectives on RTV and HTV based maxillofacial materials are critically discussed to motivate potential research in this area. Tsunami deposits provide evidence of historical and prehistorical events. However, their preservation in tropical regions is generally poor. The reasons behind this poor preservation are often linked to a number of environmental and anthropogenic factors. This study is focused on analyzing the environmental factors that impact the preservation and availability of tsunami deposits specifically in tropical regions. These factors predominantly encompass climate-related elements such as consistently high temperatures, rainfall, humidity, as well as specific soil processes, oceanic conditions, and vegetation. We compiled a comprehensive database of scientific publications on tsunami deposits, identifying the geomorphic environments where such deposits are typically preserved, as well as the commonly utilized proxies in studying tsunami deposits across different climatic zones. We propose a model that outlines the environmental factors, processes, and their interrelationships that contribute to the preservation and availability of tsunami deposits in tropical regions. Simple Summary: Positive and negative pressure ventilation systems are widely used in poultry farming to control the internal environment of poultry houses, especially in tropical regions, in which hot and humid climates can pose challenges to the thermal regulation of animals. Knowing that thermal stress impacts the quality of animal meat, this study aimed to evaluate the thermal performance and quality of poultry meat in these two types of shed. The main results found here were that the negative pressure system presents lower temperatures and air enthalpy, and the animals reared in this system have better quality meat. We recommend the negative ventilation system for broiler producers in tropical regions due to its ability to provide better thermal indicators and chicken meat quality. This study aimed to evaluate the thermal performance and meat quality in broilers reared in positive pressure tunnel ventilation (PP) and negative pressure tunnel ventilation (NP) in production houses. 320 Cobb broilers (40 broilers per house) were used. Pectoralis major muscles from 40 broilers (10 broilers per house) were randomly selected and analysed for L* (lightness), a* (redness), b* (yellowness), pH, drip loss (DL), cooking loss (CL) and shear force (SF). Air temperature and humidity of the transportation and slaughterhouse waiting room were recorded in the last week of rearing. Subsequently, the enthalpy comfort index (ECI) was calculated. Air temperature and ECI were higher (p < 0.05) in positive pressure sheds, whereas relative humidity was higher (p < 0.001) in negative pressure sheds. There was no statistically significant difference between the enthalpy comfort index during transport and lairage (p > 0.005). Meat quality defects (high L*, DL, CL, SF) were found in PP and NP. It was observed that b* was higher in PP, although pH and CL were higher in NP. Differences in pH, b* and CL indicate that broilers from PP had a higher level of heat stress. In conclusion, differences in pH, b*value and cooking loss in breast broilers indicate that birds in PP had a higher level of heat stress. Additional studies investigating pre-slaughter handling methods to minimise injuries and heat stress are recommended in order to improve animal welfare and meat quality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Flow–duration curves (FDCs) provide a compact view of the historical variability of river flows, reflecting climate conditions and the main hydrologic features of river basins. The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite mission will enable the estimation of river flows globally, by sensing rivers wider than 100 m with a sampling recurrence from 3 to 21 days. This study investigated the lifetime mission potential for FDC estimation through the comparison between remotely-sensed and empirical FDCs. We employed the Global Runoff Data Center dataset and derived SWOT-like river flows by selecting gauging stations of rivers wider than 100 m with more than 10-year long daily river flow time series. Overall, 1200 gauged river cross-sections were examined. For each site, we created a set of 24 SWOT-simulated FDCs (i.e., based on different sampling recurrences, mean biases, and random errors) to be compared against their empirical counterparts through the Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency and the mean relative error. Our results show that climate and the sampling recurrence play a key role on the performance of SWOT-based FDCs. Global soil degradation due to road erosion is an escalating concern. This study employed bibliometric analysis using the Science Citation Index‐Expanded dataset to gain insights into research trends in road erosion. It covered the years 2000–2021, revealing a steady increase in annual research publications, particularly after 2018. The United States and Catena was the leading contributor and the most popular journal, respectively. The primary research areas identified by keywords and statistical analysis are the forests and arid regions in the temperate climate zone (including temperate continental climate and temperate monsoon climate) and the tropical climate zone (including tropical rainforest climate and tropical monsoon climate). Since 2012, a noticeable shift from traditional methods to emerging technologies like isotope tracing (e.g., 137Cs, 210Pb) and machine learning (e.g., random forest) was observed, indicating evolving in methodologies with changes in research scales. The study emphasized the inevitability of road erosion, highlighting the crucial role of effective road management and restoration. It proposed integrating best management practices and ecosystem restoration strategies into watershed management, combined with advanced technological approaches, to foster sustainable watershed development. As part of our investigation, we also ran analyses excluding herbivores and detritivores from the dataset, then further focusing solely on carnivores.We found distinct patterns of the BS–TP evolutionary correlation for different climates and ecosystems. The evolutionary correlation between BS and TP was significant for all ecosystem type–climate combinations, except for tropical freshwater ecosystems. The results remained consistent even after accounting for phylogenetic uncertainty and when excluding herbivores and detritivores from the analysis.We found a weaker evolutionary correlation between BS and TP in tropical freshwater ecosystems. These findings are consistent with the stronger BS–TP relationship between extant taxa in temperate climates compared to the tropics, illustrating how evolutionary dynamics might have influenced the trophic structure of fish and contributed to shaping macroecological patterns of the BS–TP relationship. In this paper, we find a new regularity criterion of the 3D tropical climate model in terms of one component of the barotropic velocity. Our criteria of the velocity field improve the previous result by Berti et al. Moreover, we extend the regularity criteria of the Lebesgue spaces to that of larger Lorentz spaces. The need for reliable evapotranspiration (ET) estimates has prompted the introduction of new methodologies. This study aimed at studying the ET of a processing cassava field (13°6′39" S, 39°16′46" W, 154 m asl) in a tropical climate in Bahia, Brazil, under rainfed conditions from April to August 2019 by means of micrometeorological and remote sensing methods. The combination of surface renewal analysis and energy balance (SREB) demonstrated its potential to accurately determine the crop ET once calibrated against eddy covariance measurements of H. Remote sensing techniques were also applied with the METRIC and SAFER algorithms. Due to frequent cloud cover in the area, only three Landsat images from overpasses in May and June could be used. High agreement in terms of crop ET was found between the surface and the remote sensing methods. For the three images processed, METRIC and SAFER were 8.6% and 26.4% higher than SREB, on average. Among the proposed regression models (M1, M2, and M3) for estimation of processing cassava ET, M3 showed a better adjustment with the highest coefficient of determination (r2 = 0.952) and lowest error (RMSE = 0.205 mm day−1). In the M3 model, ET/Rn was expressed as a function of the NDVI/LAI ratio. These three biophysical parameters, Rn, NDVI, and LAI, can routinely be determined from image processing for field applications in water management at the studied region. Therefore, with a limited set of variables, this approach can be satisfactorily applied using data collection methodologies that provide enhanced temporal and spatial resolution. Morphological diversity within organisms can arise from factors other than genetic diversity alone. Local adaptations and combinations of various factors are also involved in shaping morphology. We investigated the relationship between morphological diversity and ecological niche divergence within two related tropical stream‐dwelling newt species from Indochina: Paramesotriton deloustali and P. guangxiensis. We identified sexual dimorphism within both species and a significantly larger body size in P. deloustali than in P. guangxiensis. Our findings highlighted that climatic variables strongly influence Asian warty newt distribution, indicating the potential effects of climate change on tropical newt populations. Furthermore, we identified significant intra‐ and interspecific morphological and niche differentiation across five populations of the two newt species, suggesting that newt morphology is responsive to environmental factors. A significant negative relationship was observed only between ecological niche similarity and geographic distance among various combinations of factors, indicating that the distinct morphology of the study species mirrors ecological adaptation. Coat color is a factor affecting heat tolerance in tropical ruminant and a particular coat color can determine which is more resilient to environmental changes. The aim of this study was to measure the level of adaptation of Morada Nova sheep with different coat color by using an Adaptability Index (AI). Adult ewes were used, including two different coat colors of Morada Nova sheep (red and white) with mean of body weight of 28.02 ± 5.70 kg and 31.47 ± 3.41 kg, respectively. Physiology parameters, hematology, electrolytes, acid–base status, mineral, renal functions, metabolites, enzymes, and proteins were measured. AI was designed using a multivariate approach (principal component analysis) to "weigh" the influence of each variable in the animal responses. The variables more important for adaptive aspects of Red Morada Nova were: haematology, electrolytes and acid–base status. The hemoglobin (HG), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), sodium (Na+), oxygen pressure (PO2), glucose (GLU) and albumin (ALB) were significantly higher in Red Morada Nova sheep and hydrogen carbonate (HCO3), base excess (BE), total carbon dioxide concentration (TCO2) and URE were significantly higher in the white phenotype. The variables more important for adaptive aspects of White Morada Nova sheep were: (K+), total protein (TP), PO2, HG, cholesterol (CHO), rectal temperature (RT) and glucose (GLU). Both phenotypes showed a high adaptation level, however, a higher value was generated for the Red Morada Nova sheep (81.97). This study concludes that both phenotypes of the Morada Nova sheep breed are well adapted to the climatic condition of the Brazilian tropical region using different adaptive mechanisms. Our study explores the utilization of a phase change material (PCM) to optimize energy efficiency and thermal comfort in buildings in tropical climates. Employing a comprehensive multi-scale approach, this research encompasses both microscopic and macroscopic analyses to rigorously evaluate the PCM's performance under various environmental conditions. It evaluates the effect of PCMs on ambient conditions in the face of temperature variations and high humidity, utilizing experimental methods at different scales (microscopic and macroscopic). Microscopic analyses reveal the composite structure of the PCM, consisting of microencapsulated paraffin within a cellulose fiber matrix. At a macroscopic scale, experiments using two real-scale test cells evaluated thermal performance and its influence on thermal comfort. Temperature and humidity data were meticulously collected over an extended period to assess the PCM's impact on indoor regulation. We employed type T thermocouples and flux meters to monitor thermal dynamics and energy flux across the building walls. This setup facilitated a detailed comparison of temperature variations and thermal comfort metrics between the PCM-equipped test cell and a control cell. The results indicate a seasonal duality of the PCM: beneficial in winter for thermal regulation but problematic in summer due to excessive heat retention. The conclusions highlight the importance of carefully selecting and adapting PCMs for tropical climates, thus providing valuable insights for designing sustainable buildings in regions facing similar climatic challenges. Indicine cattle breeds are adapted to the tropical climate, and their coat plays an important role in this process. Coat color influences thermoregulation and the adhesion of ectoparasites and may be associated with productive and reproductive traits. Furthermore, coat color is used for breed qualification, with breeders preferring certain colors. The Gir cattle is characterized by a wide variety of coat colors. Therefore, we performed genome-wide association studies to identify candidate genes for coat color in Gir cattle. Different phenotype scenarios were considered in the analyses and regions were identified on eight chromosomes. Some regions and many candidate genes are influencing coat color in the Gir cattle, which was found to be a polygenic trait. The candidate genes identified have been associated with white spotting patterns and base coat color in cattle and other species. In addition, a possible epistatic effect on coat color determination in the Gir cattle was suggested. This is the first published study that identified genomic regions and listed candidate genes associated with coat color in Gir cattle. The findings provided a better understanding of the genetic architecture of the trait in the breed and will allow to guide future fine-mapping studies for the development of genetic markers for selection. The 2015/16 El Niño event ranks among the top three of the last 100 years in terms of intensity, but most dynamical models had a relatively low prediction skill for this event before the summer months. Therefore, the attribution of this particular event can help us to understand the cause of super El Niño–Southern Oscillation events and how to forecast them skillfully. The present study applies attribute methods based on a deep learning model to study the key factors related to the formation of this event. A deep learning model is trained using historical simulations from 21 CMIP6 models to predict the Niño-3.4 index. The integrated gradient method is then used to identify the key signals in the North Pacific that determine the evolution of the Niño-3.4 index. These crucial signals are then masked in the initial conditions to verify their roles in the prediction. In addition to confirming the key signals inducing the super El Niño event revealed in previous attribution studies, we identify the combined contribution of the tropical North Atlantic and the South Pacific oceans to the evolution and intensity of this event, emphasizing the crucial role of the interactions among them and the North Pacific. This approach is also applied to other El Niño events, revealing several new precursor signals. Urban green spaces play a crucial role in mitigating urban heat islands, providing shade, cooling, absorbing carbon dioxide, and releasing oxygen to enhance air quality. Understanding the user perceptions of residential greeneries is essential for effective planning and implementation of greening systems. This quantitative research explored user perceptions and preferences regarding residential greeneries through a structured questionnaire survey from 578 respondents. The responses from the densely populated Chennai city and the rest of Tamil Nadu, India, were analyzed. About 90% of residents are interested in having a garden, irrespective of location and residential characteristics. The most available space in Chennai's urban region is a balcony at 45%, followed by front and back gardens at 30% and vice versa for Chennai's suburban areas. The most preferred type is potted plants (30%) and climbers (20%) on balconies and near windows in Chennai. The most perceived challenges are installation and maintenance costs. The most influencing factors over the preference for greeneries and green walls are the house typology, house ownership, and site location. Garcinia xanthochymus is a climax tree species growing in the Xishuangbanna tropical rainforests, which possesses a unique adaptation mechanism to the tropical monsoon climate, i.e., its seeds mature at the end of the rainy season and shed, mostly do not germinate until next rainy season, distinctly differing from most other climax species there. This study investigated the morphological structure, desiccation tolerance, and germination characteristics of G. xanthochymus seeds to understand their cytological basis and ecological adaptation. It was found that G. xanthochymus seeds germinate when incubated at temperatures between 20 and 35 °C, with a thermal optimum of 30 °C, but have a short period of dormancy (> 40 days even at 30 °C). The seeds were intolerant to desiccation, and completely lost viability when desiccated to 25% miosture content (fresh weight basis), exhibiting typical recalcitrant seed traits. However, they also possessed strong desiccation resistance, maintaining approximately 33% misture content and 50% viability even after 20 days of silica gel drying. Until germination, G. xanthochymus seeds did not exhibit visible structural differentiation. They are composed of a cluster of uniformly shaped, shallowly differentiated parenchymal cells possessing embryonic and storage functions. Thus, they germinate totipotently and can regenerate into seedlings even after being subjected to various cutting, which protects them from animal grazing. This explains how G. xanthochymus seeds withstand biotic and abiotic stresses during the dry season in Xishuangbanna, meanwhile implys that G. xanthochymus is more dependent on the forest environment and more sensitive to habitat changes. Skylight is an effective strategy for maximising daylight penetration while minimising electrical lighting energy demand in buildings. However, in tropical climate regions, skylight can be problematic due to the risk of excessive sunlight. This study aimed to optimise skylight design parameters using multi-objective optimisation (MOO) approach through a case study of a low-rise building with office rooms configured to surround a skylight in the tropical climate of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. It was conducted using computational modelling and simulation with RadianceIES tools in IES-VE 2019 software. The parameters examined included skylight shape, opening area, and thickness, while the performance indicators were spatial daylight autonomy (sDA300/50%), average daylight factor (DFave), and annual sunlight exposure (ASE1000,250). The sensitivity analysis showed that skylight opening area significantly influenced daylight performance. Moreover, the optimum design, drawn from the objective function f and Pareto frontiers, was a rounded trapezium skylight with an opening area of 897 m2, achieving sDA300/50%-ASE1000,250 = 35%, DFave = 0.9%, and mean distance to the utopia point of 64.1%. Organic photovoltaics (OPV) has attracted tremendous attention as a promising alternative to silicon wafer‐based technologies for building integration. While significant progress has been achieved on the power conversion efficiency of OPV technologies, their field stability is rarely studied. This work investigates the field performance and reliability of a large‐area OPV module designed for building integration in tropical Singapore for 4.5 years. The device suffered more than 14% degradation in power at the standard testing conditions from the initial performance, largely due to losses in fill factor (−12% relative). During the monitoring period, it exhibited comparable performance to more conventional silicon PV technologies, with an average specific energy yield of about 4 kWh/kWp/day and an average performance ratio of 0.96. Excellent performance at low light conditions was also observed. However, its field performance was heavily impacted by soiling, which typically led to a 5 to 10% loss in the current output after several months. Further, the device's outdoor performance also showed a three‐stage degradation process, including (1) an initial slow degradation in the first 2 years (about −1%/year), (2) a stable period with negligible performance loss from Years 2 to 3.5, and (3) a rapid degradation in the last year (about −5%/year). Current building techniques in developing countries have become extremely critical. The net-zero energy concept has emerged as an essential strategy for minimising energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. However, its implementation, particularly in developing countries, remains a critical challenge. The purpose of this work is to assess the feasibility of achieving a net-zero energy building by combining energy-efficient design practices and renewable energy systems under the climatic conditions of the Republic of Congo. To achieve the stipulated objectives, DesignBuilder software was utilised for building modelling, energy load assessment and multiobjective optimisation of building energy efficiency measures, and the multicriteria energy optimisation was carried out using the HOMER tool. The optimisation results showed that the implementation of energy efficiency measures resulted in 39.15% energy savings, 43.45% thermal load savings and 55.68% discomfort hours reduction. Furthermore, the renewable energy system can provide 100% of the building's energy load and a total savings of 3341.84 kgCO2eq/year. The system's levelised cost of energy was estimated at 0.256 $/kWh, with a net present cost of $20,231, while the overall life cycle cost was calculated at 188.91 $/m2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Woody biomass is a large carbon store in terrestrial ecosystems. In calculating biomass, tree stems are assumed to be solid structures. However, decomposer agents such as microbes and insects target stem heartwood, causing internal wood decay which is poorly quantified. We investigated internal stem damage across five sites in tropical Australia along a precipitation gradient. We estimated the amount of internal aboveground biomass damaged in living trees and measured four potential stem damage predictors: wood density, stem diameter, annual precipitation, and termite pressure (measured as termite damage in downed deadwood). Stem damage increased with increasing diameter, wood density, and termite pressure and decreased with increasing precipitation. High wood density stems sustained less damage in wet sites and more damage in dry sites, likely a result of shifting decomposer communities and their differing responses to changes in tree species and wood traits across sites. Incorporating stem damage reduced aboveground biomass estimates by > 30% in Australian savannas, compared to only 3% in rainforests. Accurate estimates of carbon storage across woody plant communities are critical for understanding the global carbon budget. Future biomass estimates should consider stem damage in concert with the effects of changes in decomposer communities and abiotic conditions.

This paper addresses the urgent global challenge of climate change by proposing a novel approach to residential architecture that combines passive design with active energy systems. Current studies show that buildings contribute 30% of the global energy consumption and is expected to increase with world wide rising energy demands including in Indonesia. Studies have shown the abundance of solar exposure in Indonesia. This calls for the maximisation of photovoltaic system an electricity generation system that produce the least amount of CO2. The existing public preference of bricks as residential building materials for its structural integrity and passive design qualities highlights the potential of implementing energy storing bricks technology findings from Washington University. This paper presents a concept that combines photovoltaic (PV) systems with energy-storing bricks to create a self-sufficient home that can produce and store its own electricity. Our goal is to optimize both passive and active design approaches in order to maintain or enhance the standard of living that exists today while simultaneously move toward a sustainable future at the same time. Further empirical research is required to confirm the viability and efficiency of this innovative architectural approach.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Understanding shifts in the demographic and functional composition of forests after major natural disturbances has become increasingly relevant given the accelerating rates of climate change and elevated frequency of natural disturbances. Although plant demographic strategies are often described across a slow-fast continuum, severe and frequent disturbance events influencing demographic processes may alter the demographic trade-offs and the functional composition of forests. We examined demographic trade-offs and the shifts in functional traits in a hurricane-disturbed forest using long-term data from the Luquillo Forest Dynamics Plot (LFPD) in Puerto Rico. METHODS: We analysed information on growth, survival, seed rain and seedling recruitment for 30 woody species in the LFDP. In addition, we compiled data on leaf, seed and wood functional traits that capture the main ecological strategies for plants. We used this information to identify the main axes of demographic variation for this forest community and evaluate shifts in community-weighted means for traits from 2000 to 2016. KEY RESULTS: The previously identified growth-survival trade-off was not observed. Instead, we identified a fecundity-growth trade-off and an axis representing seedling-to-adult survival. Both axes formed dimensions independent of resprouting ability. Also, changes in tree species composition during the post-hurricane period reflected a directional shift from seedling and tree communities dominated by acquisitive towards conservative leaf economics traits and large seed mass. Wood specific gravity, however, did not show significant directional changes over time. CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrates that tree demographic strategies coping with frequent storms and hurricane disturbances deviate from strategies typically observed in undisturbed forests, yet the shifts in functional composition still conform to the expected changes from acquisitive to conservative resource-uptake strategies expected over succession. In the face of increased rates of natural and anthropogenic disturbance in tropical regions, our results anticipate shifts in species demographic trade-offs and different functional dimensions.

The growing demand for coconut water has led to the expansion of irrigated green dwarf coconut cultivation; however, the inefficient use of water has contributed to the degradation and waste of water resources, making fundamental studies aiming to optimize the use of water. The objective of this study was to determine the physical productivity and water productivity of green dwarf coconut palms under the climatic conditions of Santa Izabel do Pará, eastern Amazonia, Brazil. The experiment was carried out from 2020 to 2021, in a green dwarf coconut plantation spaced 7.5 m x 7.5 m in a triangle, at Fazenda Reunidas Sococo, with an area of approximately 7 ha. Water productivity (WP) was determined both in terms of fruit production (WPf ) and coconut water production (WPca), through the relationship of fruit productivity (fruit biomass and water volume) with accumulated evapotranspiration. The dwarf coconut tree presented a total production of 105 and 186 fruits plant-1 and 37 and 62 L plant-1 of coconut water in the years 2020 and 2021. The largest volumes of water and the highest weights occurred during the wettest season. WPf was of 1.87 fruits m-3 (2020) and 2.94 fruits m-3 (2021) andWPca 0.66 L m-3 (2020) and 0.98 L m-3 (2021). Monitoring and analyzing reservoir water quality are crucial for ecological and environmental strategies. This study examines the differences between the water quality index (WQI) of Indonesia (WQI-INA), Malaysia (DOE-Malaysia), Oregon (WQI-Oregon), and Italy (PI-Prati), considering the tropical climate of Indonesia and Malaysia, and contrasting with the temperate climate of Oregon and the Mediterranean climate of Italy. Using data from the Sutami Reservoir in Indonesia from 2015 to 2021, the study assesses water quality parameters such as BOD, COD, DO, NH3, NO3, total suspended solids, total phosphorus (TP), and pH at various depths (0.3, 5, and 10 meters) across three sites (upstream, midstream, down-stream). The results show varied classifications: WQI-INA rated the reservoir as "pretty good," WQI-Oregon as "poor," and both DOE-Malaysia and PI-Prati as "slightly polluted." Spatial analysis of vertical distribution revealed "slightly polluted" (WQI-INA), "moderately polluted" (WQI-Oregon and PI-Prati), and "heavily polluted" (DOE-Malaysia). These discrepancies arise from differences in local environmental standards, regulatory requirements, and specific water quality concerns included in each index. The Sutami Reservoir water quality status was declared using WQI-INA, however, other methods were employed to simulate the worst-case scenarios and inform preventive actions. The Sutami Reservoir hyper-eutrophic conditions indicate a pollution load capacity of 65.22 tons per year. Critical parameters such as pH and TP highlight significant water quality and pollution issues. Recommendations for water quality treatment under heavy pollution conditions include applying 12.09-120.87 tons of lime, using 78.75-393.75 kg of chemical buffers, oxygen diffusion, controlling riparian vegetation over 2.37-23.7 hectares, dredging 37,100 m3 of sediment per year, and reducing nutrient sources through community involvement. Investigating the relationship between cooling efficiency (CE) and tree cover percentage (TCP) is critical for planning of green space within cities. However, the spatiotemporal complexities of the intra-city CE-TCP relationship worldwide with distinct climates, as well as the differing impacts of consistently increasing tree cover within urban regions on cooling potential, remain unclear. Here we used satellite-derived MODIS observations to investigate the CE-TCP relationship across 440 global cities during summertime from 2018 to 2020. We further investigated the impacts of enhancing tree cover by a consistent amount in different urban locales on the reduction of population heat exposure among specific age groups. Our results demonstrate a nonlinear CE-TCP relationship globally – CE exhibits an initial sharp decline followed by a gradual reduction as TCP rises, and this nonlinearity is more pronounced in tropical and arid climates than in other climate zones. We observe that 91.4% of cities experience a greater reduction in population heat exposure when introducing the same amount of TCP in areas with fewer trees than in those with denser canopies; and heat exposure mitigation is more prominent for laborers than for vulnerable groups. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Introducing crossbred cattle in both lowland and highland regions is anticipated to enhance the productivity of indigenous breeds. Tropical environments present challenges such as acclimatization problems and decreased productivity. This study aims to test the influence of the interaction between genetic factors (crossbred cattle and local breeds) and environmental factors. This study is unique in its contribution of valuable insights into the potential interplay between tropical climate conditions and the genetic makeup of crossbred cattle. It sheds light on how this interaction influences the physiological and reproductive capabilities of the cattle, as well as the alterations in reproductive hormone secretion within this specific population. The results will serve as the main consideration for the development of crossbred cattle in tropical climates. METHODS: A fully randomized design incorporating three variables was employed in this study: altitude (highland and lowland), cattle breed (crossbred and local), and observation time. The study involved 357 cattle: 116 crossbred in the lowland, 67 crossbred in the highland, 93 local breed in the lowland, and 81 local breed in the highland. The environmental conditions, physiological status, hormone concentration, and reproductive performance were all part of the observations. Data was gathered every other day during each month, except for the hormone data, which was collected based on the oestrus cycle. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method was utilized to analyze hormone concentrations. The data was analyzed using factorial patterns with SPSS 26, with Duncan's multiple-range test analysis. FINDINGS: The main finding of this study indicates that altitude influences the genetic traits of cattle relevant to the journal's scope. Variations in altitude and breed significantly affect physiological parameters such as sweating rate, respiration, and pulse frequency, as well as hormone levels including follicle stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone. Furthermore, reproductive metrics such as days open, service per conception, and calving interval are also impacted. The interaction between altitude, breed, and observation time, significantly affected physiological status, hormone concentration, and reproductive performances. In cattle with high body weight, the peak sweating rate occurs at 08:00 post meridiem -- 02:00 ante meridiem (21.83-27.92 second per centimeter square); while the low body weight occurs at 12:00 ante meridiem -- 06:00 ante meridiem (16.92-32.68 seconds per square meter). Crossbred cattle in lowland areas and at 02:00 ante meridiem -- 02:00 post meridiem have the highest respiratory frequency (59.08-63.29 times per minutes), and during the day have the highest pulse rate (69.43 times per minutes). During peak estrus, crossbred cattle in highland areas demonstrate increased concentrations of follicle stimulating hormone (15.82 ng/mL) and luteinizing hormone (70.91 ng/mL). Crossbred cattle in the lowlands have longer days open (5.75 months), higher service per conception (1.62 times), and longer calving intervals (15.94 months). CONCLUSION: Crossbred cattle reared in lowland settings may encounter a decline in both physiological and reproductive capabilities, while indigenous cattle have the ability to adapt, resulting in superior physiological and reproductive performance compared to crossbred cattle. The physiology and reproduction of cattle are shaped by genetic factors and the tropical environment, including 1) Genetic influence, 2). Two experiments were conducted to assess the effects of water medication technology on beef cattle behaviour and performance in tropical conditions. Experiment 1 involved 30 Droughtmaster yearling steers monitored over seven days in a controlled environment. Feed and water consumptions were monitored with Smart Feed Pro® systems, with three water treatments administered via uDOSE® technology. The results indicated an average water intake of 13.6 L/head/d. Experiment 2 had 120 yearling steers from four genetic groups grazing on an extensive pasture system. Throughout four 24-day periods, forage availability and chemical composition were measured once monthly. Experiment 2 revealed a variation in water intake, ranging from 16.2 L/head/d down to 4.75 L/head/d. Notably, the lower intake coincided with a rainfall event documented during the fourth experimental period. Overall, results from both experiments indicated that water medication did not alter cattle water preference. There was no preference for treated water sources in Experiment 1, while differences in Experiment 2 appeared to be influenced by external factors like weather and prior habits. These experiments demonstrate the feasibility of water medication for beef cattle without disruption of their natural behaviour.

The more insects there are, the more food there is for insectivores and the higher the likelihood for insect-associated ecosystem services. Yet, we lack insights into the drivers of insect biomass over space and seasons, for both tropical and temperate zones. We used 245 Malaise traps, managed by 191 volunteers and park guards, to characterize year-round flying insect biomass in a temperate (Sweden) and a tropical (Madagascar) country. Surprisingly, we found that local insect biomass was similar across zones. In Sweden, local insect biomass increased with accumulated heat and varied across habitats, while biomass in Madagascar was unrelated to the environmental predictors measured. Drivers behind seasonality partly converged: In both countries, the seasonality of insect biomass differed between warmer and colder sites, and wetter and drier sites. In Sweden, short-term deviations from expected season-specific biomass were explained by week-to-week fluctuations in accumulated heat, rainfall and soil moisture, whereas in Madagascar, weeks with higher soil moisture had higher insect biomass. Overall, our study identifies key drivers of the seasonal distribution of flying insect biomass in a temperate and a tropical climate. Geochemical proxies of sea surface temperature (SST) and seawater pH (pHsw) in scleractinian coral skeletons are valuable tools for reconstructing tropical climate variability. However, most coral skeletal SST and pHsw proxies are univariate methods that are limited in their capacity to circumvent non-climate-related variability. Here we present a novel multivariate method for reconstructing SST and pHsw from the geochemistry of coral skeletons. Our Scleractinian Multivariate Isotope and Trace Element (SMITE) method optimizes reconstruction skill by leveraging the covariance across an array of coral elemental and isotopic data with SST and pHsw. First, using a synthetic proxy experiment, we find that SMITE SST reconstruction statistics (correlation, accuracy, and precision) are insensitive to noise and variable calibration period lengths relative to Sr/Ca. While SMITE pHsw reconstruction statistics remain relative to δ11B throughout the same synthetic experiment, the magnitude of the long-term trend in pHsw is progressively lost under conditions of moderate-to-high analytical uncertainty. Next, we apply the SMITE method to an array of seven coral-based geochemical variables (B/Ca, δ11B, Li/Ca, Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca, U/Ca & Li/Mg) measured from two Bermudan Porites astreoides corals. Despite a <3.5 year calibration period, SMITE SST and pHsw estimates exhibit significantly better accuracy, precision, and correlation with their respective climate targets than the best single- and dual-proxy estimators. Furthermore, SMITE model parameters are highly reproducible between the two coral cores, indicating great potential for fossil applications (when preservation is high). The results shown here indicate that the SMITE method can outperform the most common coral-based SST and pHsw reconstructions methods to date, particularly in datasets with a large variety of geochemical variables. We therefore provide a list of recommendations and procedures for users to begin implementing the SMITE method as well as an open-source software package to facilitate dissemination of the SMITE method. Understanding the co-variability between the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the background state in the tropical Pacific is critical for projecting future ENSO. The difficulty is rooted in a circular logic that the background state routinely defined by multi-decadal mean modulates, and is modulated by, ENSO. This circularity arises due to the asymmetry between El Niño and La Niña, resulting in a non-zero mean, referred to as the ENSO rectification effect. Here, we develop a method based on Box-Cox normalization to define the tropical Pacific background state and its associated anomalies, which removes the ENSO rectification effect and is referred to as the normalized mean state. The normalized mean state accurately quantifies ENSO-related anomalies, ENSO asymmetry, and the ENSO rectification effect. It is evident in both observations and model simulations that the normalized mean state has a clear asymmetric impact on the amplitude of ENSO. A warm background state weakens El Niño but strengthens La Niña through two key processes: the nonlinear response of precipitation to SST and oceanic zonal advection feedback. The normalized mean state successfully solves the circular reasoning fallacy resulting from ENSO asymmetry and offers a framework to study ENSO and tropical climate dynamics with far-reaching impacts on global climate. Interactions between Atlantic and Pacific Oceans can affect tropical Pacific variability and its global impacts at both interannual and decadal timescales. Thus, a deepened understanding of the coupled Atlantic-Pacific interactions is needed. While possible dynamical mechanisms by which the Atlantic can influence the Pacific have been identified, the effectiveness of those mechanisms is difficult to establish using climate model simulations where Atlantic sea surface temperatures (SSTs) are prescribed and Pacific feedbacks cannot be realistically included. As an alternative approach, here we use a Linear Inverse Model (LIM) trained on observations and capable of correctly reproducing the observed statistics, to assess the relative role of the Atlantic-to-Pacific and Pacific-to-Atlantic influences on tropical Pacific variability. Our results indicate that Atlantic internal variability can enhance interannual SST anomalies in the eastern equatorial Pacific, and decadal SST anomalies in the central equatorial Pacific, while Pacific influences on the Atlantic significantly damp tropical Pacific decadal variability. This methodological framework could also be used to assess climate model fidelity in representing tropical basin interactions, helping to reconcile existing differences among models' results.
