Regenerating Family Member 3 Alpha (REG3A) is an antimicrobial protein secreted by the intestine and pancreas with additional immunomodulatory properties. Previously, we published that REG3A expression in ischemic stroke patient systemic blood, during mechanical thrombectomy (MT), is significantly associated with inflammatory cytokines and patient function on admission. This paper, however, did not investigate post-acute death rates. Therefore, we investigated plasma REG3A protein expression, during MT, in patients (n = 141) that survived or died within the end of the follow-up after MT. Subjects who died had significantly higher systemic plasma REG3A levels at the time of MT compared to survivors (p = 0.001). Age, sex, time from last known normal, and admission NIHSS were included as predictors to control for confounding variables and were all examined to determine their association in patient mortality. Logistic regression was used to demonstrate that higher odds of death were associated with increased REG3A levels (p = 0.002). REG3A demonstrated acceptable discrimination (AUC (95% CI): 0.669 (0.566–0.772) in predicting mortality. The overall model with age, sex, time from last known normal, and admission NIHSS discriminated well between survivors and those who died (AUC (95% CI): 0.784 (0.703–0.864)). In conclusion, REG3A could be promising as a biomarker to prognosticate stroke outcomes and stratify high-risk groups following acute ischemic stroke. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Metal halide perovskites have garnered considerable interest for their potential uses in high-efficiency photonics, particularly in the construction of on-chip lasers. Despite extensive efforts to understand the mechanisms underlying perovskite-based lasing, no clear consensus has emerged. Moreover, the fabrication of practical lasing emitters requires the challenging integration of a low-defect active material into a device architecture with minimized complexity. In this study, we demonstrate a simple, multimode lasing emitter composed of a millimeter-scale single-crystalline thin film of CsPbBr3. Dislocations, created during vapor-based film deposition, function as lasing cavity walls and form close-packed sets of resonators with random sizes at two orthogonal orientations within the thin film. Collecting ensemble temperature and power-dependent lasing characteristics of multiple, independent lasing modes in a single sample enables a statistical analysis of the underlying lasing mechanism. Our results reveal that the power-dependent red-shift in the stimulated emission envelope is caused by coupling between the radiatively recombining excitons and the collective oscillations of a photoexcited electron–hole plasma within the perovskite. This work describes the remarkable performance of a novel chemical looping route for the partial oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde employing β-VOPO4 as the oxygen carrier. During reduction, the VOPO4 carrier donates its lattice oxygen to methanol, generating formaldehyde and steam. The reduced carrier, VPO5−x, subsequently replenishes its lattice oxygen by reacting with air during oxidation. This study explores how incorporating VOPO4 on SiO2 support enables superior lattice oxygen utilization owing to improved active site dispersion. Subsequently, a stable redox performance over 10 redox cycles is achieved for the synthesized carrier. Fixed bed studies showcased a stable methanol conversion of 85% with a corresponding formaldehyde selectivity of 45%. These results confirm the feasibility of VOPO4-based oxygen carrier design for the selective oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde. Purpose: Infertility is an impactful late effect of cancer therapy. Options for fertility preservation exist, however, barriers remain. Within our division, we lacked a standard approach to discussing fertility preservation. Methods: During the time period of 2014–2020, a fertility preservation program was developed with program improvements implemented over time and provider comfort with fertility identified and addressed through educational intervention. To evaluate how our improvements affected frequency of documented reproductive health discussions, 474 pubertal pediatric patients with new oncological diagnoses were reviewed. Descriptive analysis of sociodemographic determinants was performed. Results: One hundred seventy-five patients met inclusion criteria. Racial/ethnic composition was similar in those receiving and not receiving a fertility consult. Although 19.3% of Caucasians pursued fertility preservation, none of the eight African Americans or five Hispanic females did. Division feedback identified a lack of knowledge regarding available fertility preservation options and diagnoses that should prompt this conversation as barriers to the consulting fertility preservation team. Pre- and posteducation assessments demonstrated increased comfort in discussing fertility preservation and knowledge regarding diagnoses at higher risk of infertility. Integration of a standardized fertility preservation process and addressing barriers identified led to a 33.6% increase in fertility discussions. Conclusion: The establishment of a fertility preservation process and team and division-wide education has led to improvement in rates of fertility discussion in pediatric and adolescent and young adult cancer patients. Similar to young adult data, our data suggest that some racial health disparities may exist in the utilization of fertility preservation in the pediatric oncology population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
