Search

The outskirts of galaxies have been studied from multiple perspectives for the past few decades. However, it is still unknown if all galaxies have clear-cut edges like everyday objects. We address this question by developing physically motivated criteria to define the edges of galaxies. Based on the gas density threshold required for star formation, we define the edge of a galaxy as the outermost radial location associated with a significant drop in either past or ongoing in-situ star formation. We explore $\sim$1000 low-inclination galaxies with a wide range in morphology (dwarfs to ellipticals) and stellar mass ($10^7 M_{\odot} < M_{\star} < 10^{12}M_{\odot}$). The location of the edges of these galaxies ($R_{\rm edge}$) are visually identified as the outermost cut-off or truncation in their radial profiles using deep multi-band optical imaging from the IAC Stripe82 Legacy Project. We find this characteristic feature at the following mean stellar mass density which varies with galaxy morphology: $2.9\pm0.10\,M_{\odot}$/pc$^2$ for ellipticals, $1.1\pm0.04\,M_{\odot}/$pc$^2$ for spirals and $0.6\pm0.03\,M_{\odot}/$pc$^2$ for present-day star forming dwarfs. Additionally, we find that $R_{\rm edge}$ depends on its age (colour) where bluer galaxies have larger $R_{\rm edge}$ at a fixed stellar mass. The resulting stellar mass--size plane using $R_{\rm edge}$ as a physically motivated galaxy size measure has a very narrow intrinsic scatter ($\lesssim 0.06$ dex). Polytropes have gained renewed interest because they account for several seemingly-disconnected observational properties of galaxies. Here we study if polytropes are also able to explain the stellar mass distribution within galaxies. We develop a code to fit surface density profiles using polytropes projected in the plane of the sky (propols). Sersic profiles are known to be good proxies for the global shapes of galaxies and we find that, ignoring central cores, propols and Sersic profiles are indistinguishable within observational errors (within 5 % over 5 orders of magnitude in surface density). The range of physically meaningful polytropes yields Sersic indexes between 0.4 and 6. The code has been systematically applied to ~750 galaxies with carefully measured mass density profiles and including all morphological types and stellar masses (7 < log (Mstar/Msun) < 12). The propol fits are systematically better than Sersic profiles when log(Mstar/Msun) < 9 and systematically worst when log(Mstar/Msun) > 10. Although with large scatter, the observed polytropic indexes increase with increasing mass and tend to cluster around m=5. For the most massive galaxies, propols are very good at reproducing their central parts, but they do not handle well cores and outskirts altogether. Polytropes are self-gravitating systems in thermal meta-equilibrium as defined by the Tsallis entropy. Thus, the above results are compatible with the principle of maximum Tsallis entropy dictating the internal structure in dwarf galaxies and in the central region of massive galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. [KKS2000]04 (NGC1052-DF2) has become a controversial and well-studied galaxy after the claims suggesting a lack of dark matter and the presence of an anomalously bright globular cluster (GC) system around it. A precise determination of its overall star formation history (SFH) as well as a better characterisation of its GC or planetary nebulae (PN) systems are crucial aspects to: i) understand its real nature, in particular placing it within the family of ultra diffuse galaxies; ii) shed light on its possible formation, evolution, and survival in the absence of dark matter. With this purpose we expand on the knowledge of [KKS2000]04 from the analysis of OSIRIS@GTC spectroscopic data. On the one hand, we claim the possible detection of two new PNe and confirm membership of 5 GCs. On the other hand, we find that the stars shaping [KKS2000]04 are intermediate-age to old (90\% of its stellar mass older than 5 Gyr, average age of 8.7 $\pm$ 0.7 Gyr) and metal-poor ([M/H] $\sim$ -1.18 $\pm$ 0.05), in general agreement with previous results. We do not find any clear hints of significant changes in its stellar content with radius. In addition, the possibility of [KKS2000]04 being a tidal dwarf galaxy with no dark matter is highly disfavoured., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present results from an ongoing investigation using the Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS) on the VLT Survey Telescope (VST) to provide a census of ultra-compact massive galaxies (UCMGs), defined as galaxies with stellar masses $M_{\rm \star} > 8 \times 10^{10} \rm M_{\odot}$ and effective radii $R_{\rm e} < 1.5\,\rm kpc$. UCMGs, which are expected to have undergone very few merger events, provide a unique view on the accretion history of the most massive galaxies in the Universe. Over an effective sky area of nearly 330 square degrees, we select UCMG candidates from KiDS multi-colour images, which provide high quality structural parameters, photometric redshifts and stellar masses. Our sample of $\sim 1000$ photometrically selected UCMGs at $z < 0.5$ represents the largest sample of UCMG candidates assembled to date over the largest sky area. In this paper we present the first effort to obtain their redshifts using different facilities, starting with first results for 28 candidates with redshifts $z < 0.5$, obtained at NTT and TNG telescopes. We confirmed, as bona fide UCMGs, 19 out of the 28 candidates with new redshifts. A further 46 UCMG candidates are confirmed with literature spectroscopic redshifts (35 at $z < 0.5$), bringing the final cumulative sample of spectroscopically-confirmed lower-z UCMGs to 54 galaxies, which is the largest sample at redshifts below $0.5$. We use these spectroscopic redshifts to quantify systematic errors in our photometric selection, and use these to correct our UCMG number counts. Understanding the peculiar properties of Ultra Diffuse Galaxies (UDGs) via spectroscopic analysis is a challenging task requiring very deep observations and exquisite data reduction. In this work we perform one of the most complete characterisations of the stellar component of UDGs to date using deep optical spectroscopic data from OSIRIS at GTC. We measure radial and rotation velocities, star formation histories (SFH) and mean population parameters, such as ages and metallicities, for a sample of five UDG candidates in the Coma cluster. From the radial velocities, we confirm the Coma membership of these galaxies. We find that their rotation properties, if detected at all, are compatible with dwarf-like galaxies. The SFHs of the UDG are dominated by old (~ 7 Gyr), metal-poor ([M/H] ~ -1.1) and alpha-enhanced ([Mg/Fe] ~ 0.4) populations followed by a smooth or episodic decline which halted ~ 2 Gyr ago, possibly a sign of cluster-induced quenching. We find no obvious correlation between individual SFH shapes and any UDG morphological properties. The recovered stellar properties for UDGs are similar to those found for DDO44, a local UDG analogue resolved into stars. We conclude that the UDGs in our sample are extended dwarfs whose properties are likely the outcome of both internal processes, such as bursty SFHs and/or high-spin haloes, as well as environmental effects within the Coma cluster., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We use data from the IAC Stripe82 Legacy Project to study the surface photometry of 22 nearby, face-on to moderately inclined spiral galaxies. The reprocessed and combined Stripe 82 $g'$, $r'$ and $i'$ images allow us to probe the galaxy down to 29-30 $r'$-magnitudes/arcsec$^2$ and thus reach into the very faint outskirts of the galaxies. Truncations are found in three galaxies. An additional 15 galaxies are found to have an apparent extended stellar halo. Simulations show that the scattering of light from the inner galaxy by the Point Spread Function (PSF) can produce faint structures resembling haloes, but this effect is insufficient to fully explain the observed haloes. The presence of these haloes and of truncations is mutually exclusive, and we argue that the presence of a stellar halo and/or light scattered by the PSF can hide truncations. Furthermore, we find that the onset of the stellar halo and the truncations scales tightly with galaxy size. Interestingly, the fraction of light does not correlate with dynamic mass. At the core of the standard cosmological model lies the assumption that the redshift of distant galaxies is independent of photon wavelength. This invariance of cosmological redshift with wavelength is routinely found in all galaxy spectra with a precision of $\Delta$z~10$^{-4}$. The combined use of approximately half a million high-quality galaxy spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) allows us to explore this invariance down to a nominal precision in redshift of one part per million (statistical). Our analysis is performed over the redshift interval 0.020.1. Using the exquisite depth of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF12 programme) dataset, we explore the ongoing assembly of the outermost regions of the most massive galaxies ($\rm M_{\rm stellar}\geq$ 5$\times$10$^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$) at $z \leq$ 1. The outskirts of massive objects, particularly Early-Types Galaxies (ETGs), are expected to suffer a dramatic transformation across cosmic time due to continuous accretion of small galaxies. HUDF imaging allows us to study this process at intermediate redshifts in 6 massive galaxies, exploring the individual surface brightness profiles out to $\sim$25 effective radii. We find that 5-20\% of the total stellar mass for the galaxies in our sample is contained within 10 $< R <$ 50 kpc. These values are in close agreement with numerical simulations, and higher than those reported for local late-type galaxies ($\lesssim$5\%). The fraction of stellar mass stored in the outer envelopes/haloes of Massive Early-Type Galaxies increases with decreasing redshift, being 28.7\% at $< z > =$ 0.1, 15.1\% at $< z > =$ 0.65 and 3.5\% at $< z > =$ 2. The fraction of mass in diffuse features linked with ongoing minor merger events is $>$ 1-2\%, very similar to predictions based on observed close pair counts. Therefore, the results for our small albeit meaningful sample suggest that the size and mass growth of the most massive galaxies have been solely driven by minor and major merging from $z =$ 1 to today., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables. Several authors have reported that the dynamical masses of massive compact galaxies ($M_\star \gtrsim 10^{11} \ \mathrm{M_\odot}$, $r_\mathrm{e} \sim 1 \ \mathrm{kpc}$), computed as $M_\mathrm{dyn} = 5.0 \ \sigma_\mathrm{e}^2 r_\mathrm{e} / G$, are lower than their stellar masses $M_\star$. In a previous study from our group, the discrepancy is interpreted as a breakdown of the assumption of homology that underlie the $M_\mathrm{dyn}$ determinations. Here, we present new spectroscopy of six redshift $z \approx 1.0$ massive compact ellipticals from the Extended Groth Strip, obtained with the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias. We obtain velocity dispersions in the range $161-340 \ \mathrm{km \ s^{-1}}$. As found by previous studies of massive compact galaxies, our velocity dispersions are lower than the virial expectation, and all of our galaxies show $M_\mathrm{dyn} < M_\star$ (assuming a Salpeter initial mass function). Adding data from the literature, we build a sample covering a range of stellar masses and compactness in a narrow redshift range $\mathit{z \approx 1.0}$. This allows us to exclude systematic effects on the data and evolutionary effects on the galaxy population, which could have affected previous studies. We confirm that mass discrepancy scales with galaxy compactness. We use the stellar mass plane ($M_\star$, $\sigma_\mathrm{e}$, $r_\mathrm{e}$) populated by our sample to constrain a generic evolution mechanism. We explore the stellar initial mass function (IMF) of a sample of 49 massive quiescent galaxies (MQGs) at 0.9$<$z$<$1.5. We base our analysis on intermediate resolution spectro-photometric data in the GOODS-N field taken in the near-infrared and optical with the HST/WFC3 G141 grism and the Survey for High-z Absorption Red and Dead Sources (SHARDS). To constrain the slope of the IMF, we have measured the TiO$_2$ spectral feature, whose strength depends strongly on the content of low-mass stars, as well as on stellar age. Using ultraviolet to near-infrared individual and stacked spectral energy distributions, we have independently estimated the stellar ages of our galaxies. Knowing the age of the stellar population, we interpret the strong differences in the TiO$_2$ feature as an IMF variation. In particular, for the heaviest z$\sim$1 MQGs (M$>$10$^{11}$Msun) we find an average age of 1.7$\pm$0.3 Gyr and a bottom-heavy IMF ($\Gamma_b$=3.2$\pm$0.2). Lighter MQGs (2$\times$10$^{10}$$<$M$<$10$^{11}$ Msun) at the same redshift are younger on average (1.0$\pm$0.2 Gyr) and present a shallower IMF slope ($\Gamma_b=2.7^{+0.3}_{-0.4}$). Our results are in good agreement with the findings about the IMF slope in early-type galaxies of similar mass in the present-day Universe. This suggests that the IMF, a key characteristic of the stellar populations in galaxies, is bottom-heavier for more massive galaxies and has remained unchanged in the last $\sim$8 Gyr., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

The absence of stellar disc truncations in low-inclined spiral galaxies has been a matter of debate in the last decade. Disc truncations are often observed in highly inclined galaxies but no obvious detection of this feature has so far been made in face-on spirals. Here we show, using a simple exponential disc plus stellar halo model based on current observational constraints, that truncations in face-on projections occur at surface brightness levels comparable to the brightness of stellar haloes at the same radial distance. In this sense, stellar haloes outshine the galaxy disc at the expected position of the truncations, forcing their studies only in highly inclined (edge-on) orientations., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures. (Abridged) We probe the merging channel of massive galaxies over the z=0.3-1.3 redshift window by studying close pairs in a sample of 238 galaxies with stellar mass >1E11Msun, from the deep (m<26.5AB, 3 sigma) SHARDS survey. SHARDS provides medium band photometry equivalent to low-resolution optical spectra (R~50), allowing us to obtain extremely accurate photometric redshifts (|Dz|/(1+z)~0.55%) and to improve the constraints on the age distribution of the stellar populations. A strong correlation is found between the age difference of central and satellite galaxy and stellar mass ratio, from negligible age differences in major mergers to age differences ~4 Gyr for 1:100 minor mergers. However, this correlation is simply a reflection of the mass-age trend in the general population. The dominant contributor to the growth of massive galaxies corresponds to mass ratios mu=Msat/Mcen>0.3, followed by a decrease in the fractional mass growth rate linearly proportional to log mu, at least down to mu~0.01, suggesting a decreasing role of mergers involving low-mass satellites, especially if dynamical friction timescales are taken into account. A simple model results in an upper limit for the average mass growth rate of massive galaxies of DM/M/Dt~ 0.08+-0.02 per Gyr, over the z<1 range, with a ~70% fractional contribution from (major) mergers with mu>0.3. The majority of the stellar mass contributed by mergers does not introduce significantly younger populations, in agreement with the small radial age gradients observed in present-day early-type galaxies., Comment: MNRAS in press, 14 pages, 10+1 figures, 3 tables

For many massive compact galaxies, their dynamical masses ($M_\mathrm{dyn} \propto \sigma^2 r_\mathrm{e}$) are lower than their stellar masses ($M_\star$). We analyse the unphysical mass discrepancy $M_\star / M_\mathrm{dyn} > 1$ on a stellar-mass-selected sample of early-type galaxies ($M_\star \gtrsim 10^{11} \ \mathrm{M_\odot}$) at redshifts $z \sim 0.2$ to $z \sim 1.1$. We build stacked spectra for bins of redshift, size and stellar mass, obtain velocity dispersions, and infer dynamical masses using the virial relation $M_\mathrm{dyn} \equiv K \ \sigma_\mathrm{e}^2 r_\mathrm{e} / G$ with $K = 5.0$; this assumes homology between our galaxies and nearby massive ellipticals. Our sample is completed using literature data, including individual objects up to $z \sim 2.5$ and a large local reference sample from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We find that, at all redshifts, the discrepancy between $M_\star$ and $M_\mathrm{dyn}$ grows as galaxies depart from the present-day relation between stellar mass and size: the more compact a galaxy, the larger its $M_\star / M_\mathrm{dyn}$. Current uncertainties in stellar masses cannot account for values of $M_\star / M_\mathrm{dyn}$ above 1. Our results suggest that the homology hypothesis contained in the $M_\mathrm{dyn}$ formula above breaks down for compact galaxies. We provide an approximation to the virial coefficient $K \sim 6.0 \left[ r_\mathrm{e} / (3.185 \ \mathrm{kpc}) \right]^{-0.81} \left[ M_\star / (10^{11} \ \mathrm{M_\odot}) \right]^{0.45}$, which solves the mass discrepancy problem. Chronos is our response to ESA's call for white papers to define the science for the future L2, L3 missions. Chronos targets the formation and evolution of galaxies, by collecting the deepest NIR spectroscopic data, from the formation of the first galaxies at z~10 to the peak of formation activity at z~1-3. The strong emission from the atmospheric background makes this type of survey impossible from a ground-based observatory. The spectra of galaxies represent the equivalent of a DNA fingerprint, containing information about the past history of star formation and chemical enrichment. The proposed survey will allow us to dissect the formation process of galaxies including the timescales of quenching triggered by star formation or AGN activity, the effect of environment, the role of infall/outflow processes, or the connection between the galaxies and their underlying dark matter haloes. To provide these data, the mission requires a 2.5m space telescope optimised for a campaign of very deep NIR spectroscopy. A combination of a high multiplex and very long integration times will result in the deepest, largest, high-quality spectroscopic dataset of galaxies from z=1 to 12, spanning the history of the Universe, from 400 million to 6 billion years after the big bang, i.e. covering the most active half of cosmic history., Comment: White paper for the science definition of ESA's future L2,L3 missions. Using a compilation of 379 massive (stellar mass M > 10^{11} M_Sun) spheroid-like galaxies from the near-infrared Palomar/DEEP-2 survey, we have probed, up to z~1, whether the presence of companions depends on the size of the host galaxies. We have explored the presence of companions with mass ratios down to 1:10 and 1:100, with respect to the central massive galaxy, and within a projected distance of 30, 50 and 100 kpc of these objects. We find evidence for these companions being equally distributed around both compact and extended massive spheroids. This finding suggests that, at least since z~1, the merger activity in these objects is rather homogeneous across the whole population and its merger history is not affected for the size of the host galaxy. Accretion of minor satellites has been postulated as the most likely mechanism to explain the significant size evolution of the massive galaxies over cosmic time. Using a sample of 629 massive (Mstar~10^11 Msun) galaxies from the near-infrared Palomar/DEEP-2 survey, we explore which fraction of these objects has satellites with 0.01 Msat < Mcentral < 1 (1:100) up to z=1 and which fraction has satellites with 0.1 Msat < Mcentral < 1 (1:10) up to z=2 within a projected radial distance of 100 kpc. We find that the fraction of massive galaxies with satellites, after the background correction, remains basically constant and close to ~30% for satellites with a mass ratio down to 1:100 up to z=1, and ~15% for satellites with a 1:10 mass ratio up to z=2. The family of spheroid-like massive galaxies presents a 2-3 times larger fraction of objects with satellites than the group of disk-like massive galaxies. A crude estimation of the number of 1:3 mergers a massive spheroid-like galaxy experiences since z~2 is around 2. We present the details and early results from a deep near-infrared survey utilising the NICMOS instrument on the Hubble Space Telescope centred around massive M_* > 10^11 M_0 galaxies at 1.7 < z < 2.9 found within the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) fields. The GOODS NICMOS Survey (GNS) was designed to obtain deep F160W (H-band) imaging of 80 of these massive galaxies, as well as other colour selected objects such as Lyman-break drop-outs, BzK objects, Distant Red Galaxies, EROs, Spitzer Selected EROs, BX/BM galaxies, as well as sub-mm galaxies. We present in this paper details of the observations, our sample selection, as well as a description of features of the massive galaxies found within our survey fields. This includes: photometric redshifts, rest-frame colours, and stellar masses. We furthermore provide an analysis of the selection methods for finding massive galaxies at high redshifts, including colour selection, and how galaxy populations selected through different methods overlap. We find that a single colour selection method cannot locate all of the massive galaxies, with no one method finding more than 70 percent. We however find that the combination of these colour methods finds nearly all the massive galaxies, as selected by photometric redshifts with the exception of apparently rare blue massive galaxies. By investigating the rest-frame (U-B) vs. M_B diagram for these galaxies we furthermore show that there exists a bimodality in colour-magnitude space at z < 2, driven by stellar mass, such that the most massive galaxies are systematically red up to z~2.5, while lower mass galaxies tend to be blue. We also discuss the number densities for galaxies with stellar masses M_* > 10^11 M_0, whereby we find an increase of a factor of eight between z = 3 and z = 1.5, demonstrating that this is an epoch when massive galaxies establish most of their mass., Comment: MNRAS, submitted, 23 pages. We have analysed the rest-frame far infrared (FIR) properties of a sample of massive (Mstar > 10^11Msun) galaxies at 2

The population of compact massive galaxies observed at z > 1 are hypothesised, both observationally and in simulations, to be merger remnants of gas-rich disc galaxies. To probe such a scenario we analyse a sample of 12 gas-rich and active star forming sub-mm galaxies (SMGs) at 1.8 < z < 3. We present a structural and size measurement analysis for all of these objects using very deep ACS and NICMOS imaging in the GOODS-North field. Our analysis reveals a heterogeneous mix of morphologies and sizes. We find that four galaxies (33% \pm 17%) show clear signs of mergers or interactions, which we classify as early-stage mergers. The remaining galaxies are divided into two categories: five of them (42% \pm 18%) are diffuse and regular disc-like objects, while three (25% \pm 14%) are very compact, spheroidal systems. We argue that these three categories can be accommodated into an evolutionary sequence, showing the transformation from isolated, gas-rich discs with typical sizes of 2-3 kpc, into compact (< 1 kpc) galaxies through violent major merger events, compatible with the scenario depicted by theoretical models. We present deep K-band adaptive-optics observations of eight very massive (M* ~ 4 x 10^11 Msun) galaxies at 1 < z < 2 utilizing the Gemini NIRI/Altair Laser Guide System. These systems are selected from the Palomar Observatory Wide-Field Infrared (POWIR) survey, and are amongst the most massive field galaxies at these epochs. The depth and high spatial resolution of our images allow us to explore for the first time the stellar mass surface density distribution of massive distant galaxies from 1 to 15 kpc on an individual galaxy basis, rather than on stacked images. We confirm that some of these massive objects are extremely compact with measured effective radii between 0."1 - 0."2, giving sizes which are < 2 kpc, a factor of ~ 7 smaller in effective radii than similar mass galaxies today. Examining stellar mass surface densities as a function of fixed physical aperture, we find an over-density of material within the inner profiles, and an under-density in the outer profile, within these high-z galaxies compared with similar mass galaxies in the local universe. Consequently, massive galaxies should evolve in a way to decrease the stellar mass density in their inner region, and at the same time creating more extensive outer light envelopes. We furthermore show that ~ 38% +- 20% of our sample contains evidence for a disturbed outer stellar matter distribution suggesting that these galaxies are undergoing a recent dynamical episode, such as a merger or accretion event. We calculate that massive galaxies at z < 2 will undergo on the order of five of these events, a much higher rate than observed for major mergers, suggesting that these galaxies are growing in size and stellar mass in part through minor mergers during this epoch., Comment: 8 pages, 1 table, 3 figures (1 in color). We present our recent results on the properties of the outskirts of disk galaxies. In particular, we focus on spiral galaxies with stellar disk truncations in their radial surface brightness profiles. Using SDSS, UDF and GOODS data we show how the position of the break (i.e., a direct estimator of the size of the stellar disk) evolves with time since z~1. Our findings agree with an evolution on the radial position of the break by a factor of 1.3+/-0.1 in the last 8 Gyr for galaxies with similar stellar masses. We also present radial color gradients and how they evolve with time. At all redshift we find a radial inside-out bluing reaching a minimum at the position of the break radius, this minimum is followed by a reddening outwards. Our results constrain several galaxy disk formation models and favour a scenario where stars are formed inside the break radius and are relocated in the outskirts of galaxies through secular processes., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. We use as a proxy for the SF radial profile the Near-UV surface brightness distributions, allowing suitably for extinction. CONTEXT. Hydrodynamical cosmological simulations predict flows of the intergalactic medium along the radial vector of the voids, approximately in the direction of the infall of matter at the early stages of the galaxy formation. AIMS. These flows might be detected by analysing the dependence of the warp amplitude on the inclination of the galaxies at the shells of the voids with respect to the radial vector of the voids. This analysis will be the topic of this paper. METHODS. We develop a statistical method of analysing the correlation of the amplitude of the warp and the inclination of the galaxy at the void surface. This is applied to a sample of 97 edge-on galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Our results are compared with the theoretical expectations, which are also derived in this paper. RESULTS. Our results allow us to reject the null hypothesis (i.e., the non-correlation of the warp amplitude and the inclination of the galaxy with respect to the void surface) at 94.4% C. L., which is not conclusive. The absence of the radial flows cannot be excluded at present, although we can put a constraint on the maximum average density of baryonic matter of the radial flows of <~ 4 Omega_b rho_crit., Comment: accepted to be published in A&A

We summarize the main properties of the extended UV (XUV) emission found in roughly 30% of the nearby spiral galaxies observed by the GALEX satellite. Two different classes of XUV disks are identified, the Type 1 XUV disks where significant, structured UV-bright features are found beyond the "classical" azimuthally-averaged star-formation threshold, and the Type 2 XUV disks, which are characterized by very extended (seven times the area where most of the stellar mass is found), blue [(FUV-K)<5mag] outer disks. These latter disks are extreme examples of galaxies growing inside-out. The few XUV disks studied in detail to date are rich in HI but relatively poor in molecular gas, have stellar populations with luminosity-weighted ages of ~1 Gyr, and ionized-gas metal abundances of ~Zsun/10. We present the results of a study on the properties and evolution of massive (M_* > 10^11 M_0) galaxies at z~0.4 - 2 utilising Keck spectroscopy, near-Infrared Palomar imaging, and Hubble, Chandra, and Spitzer data covering fields targeted by the DEEP2 galaxy spectroscopic survey. Our sample is K band selected based on wide-area NIR imaging from the Palomar Observatory Wide-Field Infrared Survey, which covers 1.53 deg^2 to K_s,vega~20.5. Our major findings include: (i) statistically the mass and number densities of M_* > 10^11 M_0 galaxies show little evolution between z = 0 - 1, and from z ~ 0 - 2 for M_* > 10^11.5 M_0 galaxies. (ii) Using Hubble ACS imaging, we find that M_* > 10^11 selected galaxies show a nearly constant elliptical fraction of ~70-90% at all redshifts. The remaining objects are peculiars possibly undergoing mergers at z > 0.8, while spirals dominate the remainder at lower redshifts. (iii) We find that only a fraction (~60%) of massive galaxies with M_* > 10^11 M_0 are on the red-sequence at z~1.4, while nearly 100% evolve onto it by z~0.4. (iv) By utilising Spitzer MIPS imaging and [OII] line fluxes we argue that M_* > 10^11.5 galaxies have a steeply declining star formation rate density ~(1+z)^6. By examining the contribution of star formation to the evolution of the mass function, as well as the merger history through the CAS parameters, we determine that M_* >10^11 M_0 galaxies undergo on average 0.9^+0.7_-0.5 major mergers at 0.4 < z < 1.4. (v) A high (5%) fraction of all M_* > 10^11 M_0 galaxies are X-ray emitters. Roughly half of these are morphologically distorted ellipticals or peculiars. Using deep NIR VLT/ISAAC and optical HST/WFPC2 imaging in the fields of the HDFS and MS1054-03, we study the rest-frame UV-to-optical colors and magnitudes of galaxies to z~3. While there is no evidence for a red sequence at z~3, there does appear to be a well-defined color-magnitude relation (CMR) for blue galaxies at all redshifts, with more luminous galaxies having redder U-V colors. The slope of the blue CMR is independent of redshift d(U-V)/dMV = -0.09 (0.01) and can be explained by a correlation of dust-reddening with luminosity. The average color at fixed luminosity reddens strongly \Delta(U-V) = 0.75 from z~3 to z=0, much of which can be attributed to aging of the stars. The color scatter of the blue sequence is relatively small sigma(U-V) = 0.25 (0.03) and constant to z~3, but notably asymmetrical with a sharp blue ridge and a wing towards redder colors. We explore sets of star formation histories to study the constraints placed by the shape of the scatter at z=2-3. One particular set of models, episodic star formation, reproduces the detailed properties very well. For a two-state model with high and low star formation, the duty cycle is constrained to be > 40% and the contrast between the states must be a factor > 5 (or a scatter in log(SFR) of > 0.35 dex around the mean). However, episodic models do not explain the observed tail of very red galaxies, primarily Distant Red Galaxies (DRGs), which may have ceased star formation altogether or are more heavily obscured. Finally, the relative number density of red, luminous MV < -20.5 galaxies increases by a factor of ~ 6 from z = 2.7 to z = 0.5, as does their contribution to the total rest-frame V-band luminosity density. We present deep, high angular-resolution HST/NICMOS imaging in the Hubble Deep Field South (HDF-S), focusing on a subset of 14 Distant Red Galaxies (DRGs) at z ~ 2.5 galaxies that have been pre-selected to have J-K > 2.3. We find a clear trend between the rest-frame optical sizes of these sources and their luminosity-weighted stellar ages as inferred from their broad-band spectral energy distributions (SEDs). Galaxies whose SEDs are consistent with being dusty and actively star forming generally show extended morphologies in the NICMOS images (r_e >~ 2 kpc), while the 5 sources which are not vigorously forming stars are extremely compact (r_e <~ 1 kpc). This trend suggests a direct link between the mean ages of the stars and the size and density of the galaxies and supports the conjecture that early events quench star-formation and leave compact remnants. Furthermore, the compact galaxies have stellar surface mass densities which exceed those of local galaxies by more than an order of magnitude. The existence of such massive dense galaxies presents a problem for models of early-type galaxy formation and evolution. The optical rest-frame sizes of 10 of the most massive (~5x10^{11}h_{70}^{-2}M_sun) galaxies found in the near-infrared MUNICS survey at 1.2

Using imaging data from the SDSS survey, we present the g' and r' radial stellar light distribution of a complete sample of ~90 face-on to intermediate inclined, nearby, late-type (Sb-Sdm) spiral galaxies. The surface brightness profiles are reliable (1sigma uncertainty less than 0.2 mag) down to mu=~27magsqarcsec. Only ~10% of all galaxies have a normal/standard purely exponential disk down to our noise limit. The surface brightness distribution of the rest of the galaxies is better described as a broken exponential. About 60% of the galaxies have a break in the exponential profile between ~1.5-4.5 times the scalelength followed by a downbending, steeper outer region. Another ~30% shows also a clear break between ~4.0-6.0 times the scalelength but followed by an upbending, shallower outer region. A few galaxies have even a more complex surface brightness distribution. The shape of the profiles correlates with Hubble type. Downbending breaks are more frequent in later Hubble types while the fraction of upbending breaks rises towards earlier types. We have in recent years come to view the outer parts of galaxies as having vital clues about their formation and evolution. Here, we would like to briefly present our results from a complete sample of nearby, late-type, spiral galaxies, using data from the SDSS survey, especially focused on the stellar light distribution in the outer disk. Our study shows that only the minority of late-type galaxies show a classical, exponential Freeman Type I profile down to the noise limit, whereas the majority exhibit either downbending (stellar truncation as introduced 1979 by Piet van der Kruit) or upbending profiles., Comment: LaTeX, 6 pages. We present deep 3.6 - 8 micron imaging of the Hubble Deep Field South with IRAC on the Spitzer Space Telescope. We study Distant Red Galaxies (DRGs) at z>2 selected by Js - Ks > 2.3 and compare them to a sample of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at z=2-3. The observed UV-to-8 micron spectral energy distributions are fit with stellar population models to constrain star formation histories and derive stellar masses. We find that 70% of the DRGs are best described by dust-reddened star forming models and 30% are very well fit with old and ``dead'' models. Using only the I - Ks and Ks - 4.5 micron colors we can effectively separate the two groups. The dead systems are among the most massive at z~2.5 (mean stellar mass = 0.8 x 10^11 Msun) and likely formed most of their stellar mass at z>5. To a limit of 0.5 x 10^11 Msun their number density is ~10 x lower than that of local early-type galaxies. Furthermore, we use the IRAC photometry to derive rest-frame near-infrared J, H, and K fluxes. The DRGs and LBGs together show a large variation (a factor of 6) in the rest-frame K-band mass-to-light ratios (M/L_K), implying that even a Spitzer 8 micron-selected sample would be very different from a mass-selected sample. The average M/L_K of the DRGs is about three times higher than that of the LBGs, and DRGs dominate the high-mass end. We investigate the nature of the substantial population of high-z galaxies with Js-Ks>2.3 discovered as part of our FIRES survey. This colour cut efficiently isolates z>2 galaxies with red rest-frame optical colors ("Distant Red Galaxies" or DRGs). We select objects in the 2.5'x2.5' HDF-South (HDF-S) and 5'x5' field around the MS1054-03 cluster; the surface densities at Ks<21 are 1.6+-0.6 and 1.0+-0.2 arcmin^-2. We discuss the 34 DRGs at 2

We fit the surface-brightness profiles of 21 elliptical galaxies using both the Sersic function and a new empirical model which combines an inner power law with an outer Sersic function. The profiles are combinations of deconvolved HST profiles from the literature and ellipse fits to the full WFPC2 mosaic images, and thus span a radial range from ~ 0.02 arcsec to ~ twice the half-light radius. We are able to accurately fit the entire profiles using either the Sersic function or our new model. In doing so, we demonstrate that most, if not all, so-called ``power-law'' galaxies are better described as ``Sersic galaxies'' -- they are well modeled by the three-parameter Sersic profile into the limits of HST resolution -- and that ``core'' galaxies are best understood as consisting of an outer Sersic profile with an inner power-law cusp, which is a downward deviation from the inward extrapolation of the Sersic profile. This definition of cores resolves ambiguities that result when the popular ``Nuker law'' is fitted to the profiles of ellipticals and bulges, particularly at lower luminosities. We also find that using the Nuker law to model core-galaxy nuclear profiles systematically overestimates the core radii by factors of 1.5--4.5 and underestimates the inner power-law slope by ~ 20--40% or more., Comment: LaTeX, 10 EPS figures. The variation of the mass-to-light ratios M/L of early type galaxies as function of their luminosities L is investigated. It is shown that the tilt beta=0.27 (in the B--band) of the fundamental plane relation M/L ~ L^{beta} can be understood as a combination of two effects: about one-quarter (i.e. dbeta =0.07) is a result of systematic variations of the stellar population properties with increasing luminosity. The remaining three-quarters (i.e. dbeta =0.2) can be completely attributed to nonhomology effects that lead to a systematic change of the surface brightness profiles with increasing luminosity. Consequently, the observed tilt in the K-band (beta=0.17) where stellar population effects are negligible, is explained by nonhomology effects alone. We present a quantitative morphological analysis of 187 galaxies in a region covering the central 0.28 square degrees of the Coma cluster. Structural parameters from the best-fitting Sersic r^{1/n} bulge plus, where appropriate, exponential disc model, are tabulated here. This sample is complete down to a magnitude of R=17 mag. By examining the Edwards et al. (2002) compilation of galaxy redshifts in the direction of Coma, we find that 163 of the 187 galaxies are Coma cluster members, and the rest are foreground and background objects. For the Coma cluster members, we have studied differences in the structural and kinematic properties between early- and late-type galaxies, and between the dwarf and giant galaxies. Analysis of the elliptical galaxies reveals correlations among the structural parameters similar to those previously found in the Virgo and Fornax clusters. Comparing the structural properties of the Coma cluster disc galaxies with disc galaxies in the field, we find evidence for an environmental dependence: the scale lengths of the disc galaxies in Coma are 30% smaller. A kinematical analysis shows marginal differences between the velocity distributions of ellipticals with Sersic index n<2 (dwarfs) and those with n>2 (giants); the dwarf galaxies having a greater (cluster) velocity dispersion. Finally, our analysis of all 421 background galaxies reveals a non-uniform distribution in redshift with contrasts in density ~3, characterized by a void extending from ~10,000 to ~20,000 km s^{-1}, and two dense and extended structures centred at ~20,000 and ~47,000 km s^{-1}., Comment: 34 pages, 12 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

We report the discovery of a strong correlation between the shape of a bulge's light-profile and the mass of its central supermassive black hole (M_{bh}). We find that log(M_{bh}/M_{sun}) = 2.91(+/-0.38)log(n) + 6.37(+/-0.21), where `n' is the Sersic r^{1/n} shape index of the bulge. This correlation is marginally stronger than the relationship between the logarithm of the stellar velocity dispersion and log(M_{bh}) and has comparable scatter. Using photometric and redshift data for the Virgo and Coma clusters, we present evidence for a correlation between the light concentration of elliptical galaxies (including dwarf ellipticals) and the local 3-D (i.e. non-projected) density of the clusters: more concentrated ellipticals are located in denser regions. The null hypothesis (i.e. the absence of any relation) is rejected at a significance level better than 99.9%. In order to explain the observed relation, a power law relating the galaxy light concentration and the cluster 3-D density is proposed. We study how the projection effects affect the form and dispersion of the data-points in the light concentration-projected density diagram. Quantitative structural analysis of the galaxies present in the Hawaiian Deep Fields SSA13 and SSA22 is reported. The structural parameters of the galaxies have been obtained automatically by fitting a two-component model (Sersic r^{1/n} bulge and exponential disc) to the surface brightness of the galaxies. The galaxies were classified on the basis of the bulge-to-total luminosity ratio (B/T). The magnitude selection criteria and the reliability of our method have been checked by using Monte Carlo simulations. A complete sample of objects up to redshift 0.8 has been achieved. Spheroidal objects (E/S0) represent ~33% and spirals ~41% of the total number of galaxies, while mergers and unclassified objects represent ~26%. We have computed the comoving space density of the different kinds of objects. In an Einstein-de Sitter universe a decrease in the comoving density of E/S0 galaxies is observed as redshift increases (a ~30% less at z=0.8), while for spiral galaxies a relatively quiet evolution is reported. We have investigated the structural and dynamical properties of triaxial stellar systems whose surface brightness profiles follow the r^{1/n} luminosity law - extending the analysis of Ciotti (1991) who explored the properties of spherical r^{1/n} systems. A new `analytical' expression that accurately reproduces the spatial (i.e. deprojected) luminosity density profiles (error < 0.1%) is presented for detailed modelling of the Sersic family of luminosity profiles. We evaluate both the symmetric and the non--axisymmetric components of the gravitational potential and force, and compute the torques as a function of position. For a given triaxiality, stellar systems with smaller values of n have a greater non-axisymmetric gravitational field component. We also explore the strength of the non-axisymmetric forces produced by bulges with differing n and triaxiality on systems having a range of bulge-to-disc ratios. The increasing disc-to-bulge ratio with increasing galaxy type (decreasing n) is found to heavily reduce the amplitude of the non-axisymmetric terms, and therefore reduce the possibility that triaxial bulges in late-type systems may be the mechanism or perturbation for nonsymmetric structures in the disc. Using seeing-convolved r^{1/n}-bulge plus exponential-disc fits to the K-band data from a sample of 80 nearby disc galaxies, we probe the relations between galaxy type, Sersic index n and the bulge-to-disc luminosity ratio. These relations are shown to be primarily a consequence of the relation between n and the total bulge luminosity. In the K-band, the trend of decreasing bulge-to-disc luminosity ratio along the spiral Hubble sequence is predominantly, although not entirely, a consequence of the change in the total bulge luminosity; the trend between the total disc luminosity and Hubble type is much weaker., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, MNRAS accepted

We explore the stability of different galaxy light concentration indices as a function of the outermost observed galaxy radius. With a series of analytical light-profile models, we show mathematically how varying the radial extent to which one measures a galaxy's light can strongly affect the derived galaxy concentration. The "mean concentration index", often used for parameterizing high-redshift galaxies, is shown to be horribly unstable, even when modeling one-component systems such as elliptical, dwarf elliptical and pure exponential disk galaxies. The C_31 concentration index performs considerably better but is also heavily dependent on the radial extent, and hence exposure depth, of any given galaxy. We show that the recently defined central concentration index is remarkably stable against changes to the outer radius, providing a meaningful and reliable estimate of galaxy concentration. The index n from the r^(1/n) models is shown to be monotonically related with the central concentration of light, giving the index n a second and perhaps more tangible meaning. With a sample of elliptical and dwarf elliptical galaxies, we present correlations between the central light concentration and the global parameters: luminosity (Pearson's r = -0.82), effective radius (r = 0.67), central surface brightness (r = -0.88), and velocity dispersion (r = 0.80). The more massive elliptical galaxies are shown to be more centrally concentrated. We speculate that the physical mechanism behind the recently observed correlation between the central velocity dispersion (mass) of a galaxy and the mass of its central supermassive black hole may be connected with the central galaxy concentration. That is, we hypothesize that it may not simply be the amount of mass in a galaxy but rather how that mass is distributed that controls the mass of the central black hole., Comment: (aastex, 18 pages including 13 figures)

The effects of seeing on Sersic r^{1/n} profile parameters are extensively studied using a Moffat function. This analytical approximation to the point spread function (PSF) is shown to provide the best fit to the PSF predicted from atmospheric turbulence theory when beta=4.765. The Moffat PSF is additionally shown to contain the Gaussian PSF as a limiting case beta->infinity. The Moffat function is also shown to be numerically well behaved when modelling narrow PSFs in HST images. Seeing effects are computed for elliptically symmetric surface brightness distributions. The widely used assumption of circular symmetry when studying the effects of seeing on intrinsically elliptical sources is shown to produce significant discrepancies with respect to the true effects of seeing on these sources. We present broad-band photometry and provide a quantitative analysis of the structure of galaxies in the inner region of the Abell Cluster 2443 (z~0.1). The galaxy parameters have been derived by fitting a two-component model (Sersic r^{1/n} bulge and exponential disk) to a magnitude-limited sample. Using a new method of analysis which takes into account the effects of seeing on the structural parameters and considers the ellipticity as an active parameter, we avoid systematic errors arising from assumptions of circular symmetry. 76% of the sample galaxies were classified with these models, the rest were morphologically peculiar. For the spiral galaxies, the relation between n and B/D is consistent with the trend observed in nearby field galaxy samples. The Sersic index n (which can be considered as a concentration index) of the elliptical galaxies is correlated with the local surface density of the cluster. The effects of seeing on the parameters of the S\`ersic profile are studied in an analytical form using a Gaussian point spread function. The surface brightness of S\`ersic profiles is proportional (in magnitudes) to $r^{1/n}$. The parameter $n$ serves to classify the type of profile and is related to the central luminosity concentration. It is the parameter most affected by seeing; furthermore, the value of $n$ that can be measured is always smaller than the real one. It is shown that the luminosity density of the S\`ersic profile with $n$ less than 0.5 has a central depression, which is physically unlikely.
