Abstract

N-finder algorithm (N-FINDR) has been widely used in endmember extraction. When it comes to implementation several issues need to be addressed. One is determination of endmembers, p required for N-FINDR to generate. Another is its computational complexity resulting from an exhaustive search. A third one is its requirement of dimensionality reduction. A fourth and probably the most critical issue is its use of random initial endmembers which results in inconsistent final endmember selection and results are not reproducible. This paper re-invents the wheel by re-designing the N-FINDR in such a way that all the above-mentioned issues can be resolved while making the last issue an advantage. The idea is to implement the N-FINDR as a random algorithm, called random N-FINDR (RN-FINDR) so that a single run using one set of random initial endmembers is considered as one realization. If there is an endmember present in the data, it should appear in any realization regardless of what random set of initial endmembers is used. In this case, the N-FINDR is terminated when the intersection of all realizations produced by two consecutive runs of RN-FINDR remains the same in which case the p is then automatically determined by the intersection set without appealing for any criterion. In order to substantiate the proposed RN-FINDR custom-designed synthetic image experiments with complete knowledge are conducted for validation and real image experiments are also performed to demonstrate its utility in applications. 48. Analytical study on junction detection

Abstract

Junctions convey rich information and are often used to identify objects in the scene or for stereoscopic matching or displacement vector measuring. In a previous work, an accurate wavelet-based corner detection method has been proposed. This work is an extension of the work on junction characterization and detection in real images. We first perform an analytical study for a general junction model that allows us to better understand the behavior of junctions in the wavelet domain. Two new properties, including the scale proportion property of the modulus and the scale invariant property of orientation in the wavelet domain, are derived. These properties are applied to accurately detect junctions. Several promising experimental results have been carried out using noisy and noisy-free real images. These results show that our approach is a general methodology for accurate detection of discrete surface intersection. © 2002 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.

49. Image watermarking through attack simulation

Abstract

One of the most significant requirements for a useful watermarking system is strong resistance to a variety of common attacks. Accordingly, the watermark embedding is designed from the attack perspective in this paper. We attempt to develop a new just-noticeable distortion (JND) in the discrete cosine transform (DCT) domain, based on an attack simulation scheme that reversely derives the maximum modification amount embedded in the DCT domain under a condition of imperceptibility. A new location selection approach to watermark embedding is also addressed. We evaluate the fitness of the embedding location by considering the embedding capacity, i.e., the JND of the considered frequency component, in addition to the frequency and the spectral strength, which are usually adopted by the existing methods. Experimental results show satisfactory ability of our method to resist various common attacks such as JPEG compression, smoothing, sharpening, cropping, and noise attacks.
