This study compares domestic and foreign special purpose acquisition companies (SPACs) listed in the US market. Compared with domestic SPACs, we find that foreign SPACs raise lower proceeds from initial public offerings and private investments in public equity funding. Additionally, redemption rates of foreign SPACs are higher than those of domestic SPACs. Our findings suggest that foreign SPACs face a competitive disadvantage due to their limited networks in the US market. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Digital maps structure how we understand and interact with space while simultaneously affording agency and the potential for an alternative use of space. This article investigates how digital maps exercise data and spatial agency. Our empirical object is the environmental mobile mapping application water refill map (WRM, Hong-Te/ Fengcha Action 奉茶行動) in Taiwan. Drawing on the walk-through method and semi-structured interviews with WRM's founders, we examine how the app leverages the power of digital mapping to encourage participation in environmental activities. We argue that by facilitating data and spatial agency, digital maps enable placemaking at the cognitive and hermeneutic levels. They also turn closed spaces into public ones, thus aiding place-shaping. Meanwhile, this digital environmental activism takes place in a field of contestation and negotiation between agency and structure, apps and infrastructural platforms, collective action and individual power, and environmentalism and (adjusted) commercialism. Understanding platelet protein functions facilitates better assessment of platelet disorders. Megakaryocyte lineage-restricted human Disabled-2 knock-in (hDAB2-KI) mice are generated to delineate the functions of hDab2, a regulator of platelet function, in the control of bleeding associated with thrombocytopenia. Here we show that hDab2-KI mice with thrombocytopenia display decreased bleeding time when compared to the control mice. hDab2 augments thromboxane A2 (TxA2) mimetic U46619- but not other agonists-stimulated granule secretion, integrin activation, and aggregation at a lower platelet concentration in vitro. Binding of hDab2 to phosphatidic acid (PA) facilitates formation of the PA-hDab2-AKT complex leading to an increase in U46619-stimulated AKT-Ser473 phosphorylation and the first wave of ADP/ATP release. Consistent with these findings, hDab2 expression in platelets from patients with immune thrombocytopenic purpura is positively correlated with U46619-stimulated ATP release, which in turn inversely correlated with their bleeding tendency. hDab2 appears crucial in regulating bleeding severity associated with thrombocytopenia by a functional interplay with ADP/ATP release underlying TxA2 signaling. Tumor cell-induced platelet aggregation (TCIPA) is a mechanism for the protection of tumor cells in the bloodstream and the promotion of tumor progression and metastases. The platelet C-type lectin-like receptor 2 (CLEC-2) can bind podoplanin (PDPN) on a cancer cell surface to facilitate TCIPA. Selective blockage of PDPN-mediated platelet–tumor cell interaction is a plausible strategy for inhibiting metastases. In this study, we aimed to screen for aptamers, which are the single-stranded DNA oligonucleotides that form a specific three-dimensional structure, bind to specific molecular targets with high affinity and specificity, bind to PDPN, and interfere with PDPN/CLEC-2 interactions. The systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment (SELEX) was employed to enrich aptamers that recognize PDPN. The initial characterization of ssDNA pools enriched by SELEX revealed a PDPN aptamer designated as A1 displaying parallel-type G-quadruplexes and long stem-and-loop structures and binding PDPN with a material with a dissociation constant (Kd) of 1.3 ± 1.2 nM. The A1 aptamer recognized both the native and denatured form of PDPN. Notably, the A1 aptamer was able to quantitatively detect PDPN proteins in Western blot analysis. The A1 aptamer could interfere with the interaction between PDPN and CLEC-2 and inhibit PDPN-induced platelet aggregation in a concentration-dependent manner. These findings indicated that the A1 aptamer is a candidate for the development of biosensors in detecting the levels of PDPN expression. The action by A1 aptamer could result in the prevention of tumor cell metastases, and if so, could become an effective pharmacological agent in treating cancer patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: In recent decades, the prevalence of food allergy (FA) in children has increased in Western countries; however, there have been only limited studies on FA, especially among young children, in Asian countries, including Taiwan. In this study, we identified prenatal and perinatal risk factors associated with FA in young children in Taiwan. Methods: For this prospective birth cohort study, we adopted the Southern Taiwan Allergy Research Alliance (STARA)-FA questionnaire to collect data related to prenatal and perinatal risk factors and self-reported allergic symptoms in children aged 1–3 years in the well-baby clinics of 4 medical centers located in 3 cities, Chia-Yi, Tainan, and Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The STARA-FA questionnaire consisted of 99 questions to investigate the association of prenatal and perinatal risk factors with FA. Results: We recruited 903 young children aged 1–3 years in Taiwan. Among those, 95 (14.7%) children had allergic reactions to foods. The most common food allergens were eggs (26/95, 27.3%), milk (22/95, 23.2%), fruits (13/95, 13.7%), and seafood (12/95, 12.6%). We also found that there were 134 (14.8%) children with eczema, 86 (9.5%) with wheezing, and 240 (26.6%) with rhinitis. Children with a personal history of eczema (adjusted odds ratio [AOR], 2.48; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.38–4.45) and a family allergy history (AOR, 2.06; 95% CI, 1.18–3.57) had a significantly increased risk of FA. Maternal peanut consumption during pregnancy was associated with a decreased risk of FA in children (AOR, 0.57; 95% CI, 0.33–0.98). Conclusions: In this study, the prevalence of FA in a cohort of Taiwanese young children was 14.7%. Risk factors associated with FA were a personal eczema history and a family allergy history, which might serve as predictive or prevention factors for the development of FA in young children in Taiwan.

Background: Post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC) affects patients after recovering from acute coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This study investigates the impact of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination on PASC symptoms in children in Taiwan during the Omicron pandemic. Methods: We enrolled children under 18 years with PASC symptoms persisting for more than 4 weeks. Data collected included demographics, clinical information, vaccination status, and symptom persistence. We used logistic regression models to compare symptoms in the acute and post-COVID-19 phases and to assess the association between vaccination and these symptoms. Results: Among 500 PASC children, 292 (58.4%) were vaccinated, 282 (52.8%) were male, and the mean (SD) age was 7.6 (4.6) years. Vaccinated individuals exhibited higher odds of experiencing symptoms in the previous acute phase, such as cough (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 1.57; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.02–2.42), rhinorrhea/nasal congestion (AOR = 1.74; 95% CI: 1.13–2.67), sneezing (AOR = 1.68; 95% CI: 1.02–2.76), sputum production (AOR = 1.91; 95% CI: 1.15–3.19), headache/dizziness (AOR = 1.73; 95% CI: 1.04–2.87), and muscle soreness (AOR = 2.33; 95% CI: 1.13–4.80). In contrast, there were lower odds of experiencing abdominal pain (AOR = 0.49; 95% CI: 0.25–0.94) and diarrhea (AOR = 0.37; 95% CI: 0.17–0.78) in children who had received vaccination during the post-COVID-19 phase. Conclusions: This study revealed clinical features and vaccination effects in PASC children in Taiwan. Vaccination may reduce some gastrointestinal symptoms in the post-COVID-19 phase. Objective: This study aimed to examine associations of maternal folic acid supplementation (FAS) during pregnancy with childhood overweight or obesity (OWO) or adiposity. Methods: In a population‐based cohort of 1479 children, maternal FAS during pregnancy was assessed retrospectively by questionnaires. BMI and body fat percentages were measured at a mean age of 6.4 years. Pertinent factors were accounted for in data analyses. Results: Maternal FAS during pregnancy was negatively associated with OWO (adjusted odds ratio: 0.70; 95% CI: 0.50 to 0.99). There were inverse associations of maternal FAS during pregnancy with BMI z score (β: −0.22; 95% CI: −0.39 to −0.05), whole body fat percentage (β: −1.28; 95% CI: −2.27 to −0.30), trunk fat percentage (β: −1.41; 95% CI: −2.78 to −0.04), and limb fat percentage (β: −1.31; 95% CI: −2.32 to −0.30). Stratified analyses found inverse associations of FAS during pregnancy with OWO, BMI z score, and body fat percentages predominantly among children without breastfeeding and whose parents had a below‐tertiary educational level. Conclusions: This study provides novel evidence that maternal FAS during pregnancy was significantly associated with a decreased risk of childhood OWO and adiposity, particularly among children with no breastfeeding and lower parental educational level.
