Optical network-on-chip (ONoC) is an emerging upgrade for electronic network-on-chip (ENoC). As a kind of ONoC, wavelength-routed optical network-on-chip (WRONoC) shows ultra-high bandwidth and ultra-low latency in data communication. Manually designed WRONoC topologies typically reserve all to all communications. Topologies customized for application-specific networks can save resources, but require automation for their efficient design. The state-of-the-art design automation method proposes an integer-linear-programming (ILP) model. The runtime for solving the ILP model increases exponentially with the growth of communication density. Besides, the locations of the physical ports are not taken into consideration in the model. This causes unavoidable detours and crossings in physical layout. In this work, we present FAST: an automatic topology customization and optimization method combining ILP and a sweeping technique. FAST overcomes the runtime problem and provides multiple topology variations with different port orders for physical layout. Experimental results show that FAST is thousands times faster when tackling dense communications and ten to thousands times faster when tackling sparse communications while providing multiple better or equivalent topologies regarding resource usage and the worst-case insertion loss.

Continuous-flow microfluidics has evolved very rapidly in the last twenty years. Biochemical applications can be performed in parallel and automatically on continuous-flow microfluidic chips, by which more precise results with higher throughput can be achieved. To date, most continuous-flow microfluidics are still designed manually, which is time-consuming, error-prone, and especially impractical for large-scale-integration. Design automation researchers started to develop design automation tools for continuous-flow microfluidics about ten years ago. Some of these are front-end tools, which scheduled biological operations from assay protocols and allocated these operations to microfluidic devices. Some others are back-end tools, which performed automatic device placement and micro-channel routing. As new on-chip components, e.g., sieve valves, and new architectures, e.g., a homogeneous valve-centered architecture, are continuously invented and adopted, design automation tools also evolve accordingly over time. This dissertation first provides a brief review of design automation research for continuous-flow microfluidics over the last decade. In this review, a detailed description is given for the microfluidic architecture and the general topics of front-end as well as back-end research in design automation field. Selected research results are then introduced according to their appearance over time, which also matches the general trend of research topics from front-end to back-end. The main body of the dissertation presents new research results that cover four topics in four chapters: temporary caching of fluids, sieve valve exploration, synthesis for reconfigurable chips, and the layout generation tool Columba. Continuous-Flow Mikrofluidik hat sich in den letzten 20 Jahren schnell entwickelt. Biologische Anwendungen können in den continuous-flow Mikrofluidikchips parallel und automatisch durchgeführt werden. Somit können präzise Ergebnisse mit hohem Durchsatz erreicht werden. Heute werden continuous-flow Mikrofluidikchips typischerweise noch manuell entworfen. Der manuelle Entwurf ist üblicherweise zeitaufwändig und fehleranfällig und kann Large-Scale-Integration kaum unterstützen. Vor etwa 10 Jahren begannen Wissenschaftler damit, Werkzeuge für die Entwurfsautomatisierung von continuous-flow Mikrofluidik zu erforschen. Diese Werkzeuge lassen sich grundsätzlich in zwei Kategorien einteilen: front-end Werkzeuge, die für Ablaufplanung und Bindung verantwortlich sind, sowie back-end Werkzeuge, die für Plazierung und Verdrahtung verantwortlich sind. Mit der technologischen Weiterentwicklung werden neue Mikrofluidikkomponenten, wie z.B. Siebventile, erfunden, und neue Mikrofluidikarchitekturen, wie homogene Ventil-basierte Architektur, verwendet. Dementsprechend entwickeln sich auch die Werkzeuge für Entwurfsautomatisierung weiter. Diese Dissertation beginnt mit einer kurzen Übersicht über Forschungsergebnisse der Entwurfsautomatisierung für continuous-flow Mikrofluidik im letzten Jahrzehnt. Zuerst wird eine detaillierte Vorstellung der Mikrofluidikarchitektur und der allgemeinen Forschungsthemen auf dem front-end sowie dem back-end Forschungsgebiet gegeben. Dann werden ausgewählte Forschungsresultate chronologisch eingeführt, um vorherige Forschungsergebnisse zusammenzufassen. Im Anschluss werden in vier Kapiteln Forschungsmethodik und Forschungsergebnisse zu folgenden Themen ausführlich dargestellt: temporäre Zwischenspeicherung von Flüssigkeiten, high-level Synthesis unter Berücksichtigung der Siebventile, Synthese für rekonfigurierbare Mikrofluidikchips, sowie das umfassende Werkzeug Columba zur Layoutgenerierung.
