Abstract

CeRh$_2$As$_2$ is a new multiphase superconductor with strong suggestions for an additional itinerant multipolar ordered phase. The modeling of the low temperature properties of this heavy fermion compound requires a quartet Ce$^{3+}$ crystal-field ground state. Here we provide the evidence for the formation of such a quartet state using x-ray spectroscopy. Core-level photoelectron and x-ray absorption spectroscopy confirm the presence of Kondo hybridization in CeRh$_2$As$_2$. The temperature dependence of the linear dichroism unambiguously reveils the impact of Kondo physics for coupling the Kramer's doublets into an effective quasi-quartet. Non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering data find that the $|\Gamma_7^- \rangle$ state with its lobes along the 110 direction of the tetragonal structure ($xy$ orientation) contributes most to the multi-orbital ground state of CeRh$_2$As$_2$., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

Nanocrystalline Ni can adopt a hexagonal close-packed (hcp) structure,which does not appear in a bulk form under any conditions.Structural studies found its $>$ 20% expansion of volume per atom compared with face-centered cubic (fcc) Ni.Hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy of the hcp phase revealed a $>$ 0.14 valence electron transfer from 3$d$ to 4$s$ and 4$p$ orbitals and a 0.25 eV reduction in band energy per electron compared with the fcc phase.Its nonmagnetic nature was attributed to a low density of states at the Fermi level.Thermodynamic stability of the hcp phase can be explained by the band energy gain and the electrostatic potential energy loss as related to the large lattice expansion., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Pressure dependence of the electronic and crystal structures of K$_{x}$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_{2}$, which has pressure-induced two superconducting domes of SC I and SC II, was investigated by x-ray emission spectroscopy and diffraction. X-ray diffraction data show that compressibility along the c-axis changes around 12 GPa, where a new superconducting phase of SC II appears. This suggests a possible tetragonal to collapsed tetragonal phase transition. X-ray emission spectroscopy data also shows the change in the electronic structure around 12 GPa. These results can be explained by the scenario that the two SC domes under pressure originate from the change of Fermi surface topology. Present results here show that the nesting condition plays a key role in stabilizing the superconducting state helping to address outstanding fundamental question as to why the SC II appears under pressure.

Abstract

Valence instability is a key ingredient of the unusual properties of f electron materials, yet a clear understanding is lacking as it involves a complex interplay between f electrons and conduc- tion states. Here we propose a unified picture of pressure-induced valence transition in Sm and Yb monochalcogenides, considered as model system for mixed valent 4f-electron materials. Using high-resolution x-ray absorption spectroscopy, we show that the valence transition is driven by the promotion of a 4f electron specifically into the lowest unoccupied (LU) 5d t2g band. We demonstrate with a promotional model that the nature of the transition at low pressures is intimately related to the density of states of the LU band, while at high pressures it is governed by the hybridization strength. These results set a new standard for the generic understanding of valence fluctuations in f-electron materials.

Abstract

In a class of frustrated magnets known as spin ice, magnetic monopoles emerge as classical defects and interact via the magnetic Coulomb law. With quantum-mechanical interactions, these magnetic charges are carried by fractionalised bosonic quasi-particles, spinons, which can undergo Bose-Einstein condensation through a first-order transition via the Higgs mechanism. Here, we report evidence of a Higgs transition from a magnetic Coulomb liquid to a ferromagnet in single-crystal Yb2Ti2O7. Polarised neutron-scattering experiments show that the diffuse [111]-rod scattering and pinch-point features which develop on cooling are suddenly suppressed below T_C ~ 0.21 K, where magnetic Bragg peaks and a full depolarisation of the neutron spins are observed with thermal hysteresis, indicating a first-order ferromagnetic transition. Our results are explained on the basis of a quantum spin-ice model, whose high-temperature phase is effectively described as a magnetic Coulomb liquid, while the ground state shows a nearly collinear ferromagnetism with gapped spin excitations., Comment: 36 pages, including 3 figures and supplement with 4 more figures

Abstract

Based on measurements of angle resolved photoemission, we report that in the Pb/Ge(111)- \sqrt{3}x\sqrt{3} R30^\circ structure, in addition to three bands resembling Ge heavy hole (HH), light hole (LH), and split off (SO) bulk band edges, a fourth dispersive band resembling the non split off (NSO) band is found near the surface zone center. While three Ge bulk-like bands get distorted due to strong coupling between Pb and Ge, the NSO-like band gets weaker and disappears for larger thickness of Pb, which, when combined with ab initio calculations, indicates its localized nature within space charge layer. Abstract

Intermetallic compounds in the Al–Pt system were systematically studied via hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, focusing on the positions of Pt 4f and Al 2s core levels and valence band features. On one hand, with increasing Al content, the Pt 4f core levels shift towards higher binding energies (BE), revealing the influence of the atomic interactions (chemical bonding) on the electronic state of Pt. On the other hand, the charge transfer from Al to Pt increases with increasing Al content in Al–Pt compounds. These two facts cannot be combined using the standard "chemical shift" approach. Computational analysis reveals that higher negative effective charges of Pt atoms are accompanied by reduced occupancy of Pt 5d orbitals, leading to the limited availability of these electrons for the screening of the 4f core hole and this in turn explains the experimentally observed shift of 4f core levels to higher BE. Abstract

For the inelastic electron scattering of atoms and molecules, a consensus has been reached that the first Born approximation is easily approached by decreasing the momentum transfer at the same impact electron energy or increasing the impact electron energy at the same momentum transfer. Although this consensus is applicable for the elastic electron scattering of most atoms and molecules, it is violated for helium where the experimental differential cross sections deviate from the first Born approximation prediction gradually with the decrease of squared momentum transfer at the same impact electron energy. Since this anomalous phenomenon was observed more than 40 years ago, the intrinsic mechanism is not explicit. In the present work, using the high-resolution x-ray scattering, we isolate the scattering contribution from the nucleus and directly obtain the pure electronic structure of helium. Then, the anomalous asymptotic behavior of the elastic electron scattering of helium has been elucidated, i.e., in the small squared momentum transfer region, the scattering contribution from the target's electrons is counteracted by the one from the atomic nucleus, which results in the residual contribution beyond the first Born approximation being drastically enlarged. Abstract

We are developing 1s3p resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) as a versatile spectroscopic tool to probe active systems under working conditions. In order to establish detailed reference materials for cobalt-based systems, we have applied 1s X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and 1s3p RIXS to cobalt oxides (CoO, Co3O4) and sulfides (CoS and CoS2). We show that the Co3+ ions in Co3O4 contain a large nonlocal peak intensity in the pre-edge and that the resonant 3p final state of Co3O4 is dominated by the two exchange-split peaks of the tetrahedral Co2+ site. In contrast, the 3p final state of CoS and CoS2 shows a single asymmetric peak due to the large screening of the 3p-3d exchange interaction. While CoS has a single pre-edge peak, CoS2 contains an additional large nonlocal peak. This indicates that although CoS2 is often indicated as Co2+(S2)2-, it has a very strong sulfur-mediated cobalt-cobalt bonding, similar to the low-spin Co3+ sites in oxides. These electronic structure details reveal the significance of 1s3p RIXS spectroscopy for determining the symmetry, spin and covalence of transition metal compounds, information that is largely inaccessible in conventional K edge XAS. The experimental results are simulated with multiplet calculations that reveal the partial screening of the 3p3d exchange interaction and the presence of nonlocal transitions. We conclude that 1s3p RIXS combined with spectral simulations presents a valuable tool to unravel the electronic properties of functional materials under working conditions.

Abstract

Laser-excited N and R fluorescence lines of heavily doped ruby have been studied up to 26 GPa at low temperatures. While the intensity of the R lines at ambient pressure significantly decreases with decreasing temperature, the intensity of N lines originating from exchange-coupled Cr ion pairs is enhanced at low temperatures. The pressure induced wavelength shift of the N lines at 19 K is well fitted with an empirical formula similar to the equation for the R1 line, showing that the intense N line could be used as an alternative pressure scale at low temperatures. We also observe continuous increase in non-hydrostaticity with increasing pressure at low temperatures when silicone oil and 4:1 mixture of methanol and ethanol are used as pressure media. Abstract

Semiconducting substances form one of the most important families of functional materials. However, semiconductors containing only metals are very rare. The chemical mechanisms behind their ground‐state properties are only partially understood. Our investigations have rather unexpectedly revealed the semiconducting behaviour (band gap of 190 meV) for the intermetallic compound Be5Pt formed at a very low valence‐electron count. Quantum‐chemical analysis shows strong charge transfer from Be to Pt and reveals a three‐dimensional entity of vertex‐condensed empty Be4 tetrahedrons with multi‐atomic cluster bonds interpenetrated by the framework of Pt‐filled vertex‐condensed Be4 tetrahedrons with two‐atomic polar Be−Pt bonds.
