Abstract

We theoretically and experimentally evaluate the influence of the bandwidth limitation and group delay ripple (GDR) of linearly chirped fiber Bragg gratings (LCFBGs) on the all-optical clock recovery utilizing the temporal Talbot effect. To simulate the reasonably arbitrary shape of the GDR of LCFBGs, the generalized distribution function model of GDR was proposed and utilized. The quality of recovered clock pulses was evaluated by using the proposed parameters 'peak variation' and 'pulse visibility.' Simulation results indicated that both the signal pulses with < 1% duty factor and LCFBGs with the bandwidth of >~125 times the bit rate, 10 nm for 10 Gbit/s input signal, were required to obtain both ~17 dB pulse visibility of the clock pulses recovered from [2.sup.7]-1 pseudorandom bit sequence (PRBS) pulses, and indicated that the LCFBGs with OCIS codes: 060.2330, 060.3735, 070.6760, 320.5550.

26. Spontaneous Pneumomediastinum: Report of a Case and Review of Literature

Abstract

Spontaneous pneumomediastinum, defined as the presence of free air in the mediastinal structures, is a rare disease that usually take a good course with conservative therapy. However, clinicians are usually unfamiliar with the disease because of its infrequency. We report herein a case of spontaneous pneumomediastinum following an episode of violent cough. The patient was treated conservatively after hospitalization and got well without any medical problems. In addition we reviewed characteristics of spontaneous pneumomediastinum reported so far in the Japanese literature. The result of our review suggests that the typical patient with spontaneous pneumomediastinum is a young man with a slender build. In most patients, spontaneous pneumomediastinum occurs in conjunction with condition causing high airway pressure. None of the patients described in the literature developed serious complications such as cardiac insufficiency or airway compromise, and none of the cases without concomitant pneumothorax required any medical care. 28. Sinusoidal wavelength-scanning interferometers

Abstract

In sinusoidal phase-modulating interferometry an optical path length (OPD) larger than a wavelength is measured by detecting sinusoidal phase-modulation amplitude of the interference signal. This interference signal is produced by scanning sinusoidally wavelength of a light source. If the measurement accuracy in POD is higher than half of the central wavelength, this measured value is combined with a fractional value of the OPD which is obtained from the conventional phase of the interference signal. The measurement accuracy in POD is higher as the scanning width of wavelength is larger. We propose two different methods to create a light source with a large scanning width of wavelength by using superluminenscent laser diode and external-cavity tunable laser diode. Experimental results clearly show that sinusoidal wavelength-scanning interferometers using these light sources measure an OPD over a few tens of microns with a high accuracy of a few nm., Laser interferometry 9 : International conferences : Jul 1998, San Diego, CA

50. Results of mass endoscopic examination for gastric cancer in Kamigoto Hospital, Nagasaki Prefecture.

Abstract

Aim: To examine how the introduction of endoscopy to gastric cancer screening affected survival prognosis in a regional population., Methods: The subjects comprised 4261 residents of Kamigoto, Nagasaki Prefecture, who underwent gastric X-ray examination for gastric cancer screening from 1991 to 1995, and all 7178 residents who underwent endoscopic examination for the same purpose from 1996 to 2003. The analysis evaluated trends in age-adjusted gastric cancer mortality rates and standard mortality ratios (SMRs) among the Kamigoto residents., Results: According to demographic statistics, the 1995 and 2000 age-adjusted gastric cancer mortality rates in Nagasaki Prefecture (per 100000 population) were 42.6 and 37.3 for males and 18.6 and 16.0 for females, while the corresponding rates in Kamigoto before and after the introduction of endoscopic screening were respectively 51.9 and 28.0, and 26.6 and 6.9. The data obtained in this study were divided into those for two periods, 1990-1996 and 1997-2006, and SMRs were calculated separately for males and females. For the first period, the SMR was 1.04 (95% CI 0.50-1.58) for males and 1.54 (95% CI 0.71-2.38) for females, while for the second period the SMR was 0.71 (95% CI 0.33-1.10) for males and 0.62 (95% CI 0.19-1.05) for females., Conclusion: Following the introduction of endoscopic examination, gastric cancer death rates decreased in Kamigoto.
