Recent advancements in deep learning (DL) have led to the wide adoption of AI applications, such as image recognition [1], image de-noising and speech recognition, in the 5G smartphones. For a satisfactory user experience, there are stringent requirements in the real-time response of smartphone applications. In order to meet the performance expectations for DL, numerous deep learning accelerators (DLA) have been proposed for DL inference on the edge devices [2]–[5]. As depicted in Fig. 7.1.1, the major challenge in designing a DLA for smartphones is achieving the required computing efficiency, while limited by the power budget and memory bandwidth (BW). Since the overall power consumption of a smartphone system-on-a-chip (SoC) is usually constrained to 2 to 3W and the available DRAM BW is around 10-to-30GB/s, the power budget allocated for a DLA must be below 1W with the memory BW limited to 1-to-10GB/s. While operating under such constraints, the DLA is required to support various network topologies and highly precise neural operations in smartphone applications. For instance, the Android neural network APIs currently specify the use of asymmetric quantization (ASYMM-Q), providing better precision than conventional symmetric quantization.

Macrophages have a pivotal role in chronic inflammatory diseases (CIDs), so imaging and controlling activated macrophage is critical for detecting and reducing chronic inflammation. In this study, photodynamic selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) with photosensitive and macrophage-targeting bilayers were developed. The first layer of the photosensitive macromolecule was composed of a conjugate of a photosensitizer (rose bengal, RB) and a thiolated chitosan (chitosan-glutathione), resulting in a plasmonic coupling-induced red shift and broadening of RB absorption bands with increased absorption intensity. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and diphenylanthracene (DPA) quenching studies revealed that the SeNPs that were coated with the photosensitive layer were more effective than RB alone in producing singlet oxygen (1O2) under photoirradiation. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is inflammation-related. Patients with chronic renal failure who undergo hemodialysis (HD) have some acute adverse effects caused by dialysis-induced oxidative stress, protein adsorption, platelet adhesion, and activation of coagulation and inflammation. Here, resonantly illuminated gold nanoparticles-modified artificial kidney (AuNPs@AK) for achieving high efficiency accompanying therapeutic strategy for CKD during HD is proposed. The efficiency in removing uremic toxins increased obviously, especially in the presence of protein (closer to the real blood). The excited AuNPs@AK expressed negatively charged surface reduced some acute adverse effects caused by dialysis-induced protein adsorption, platelet adhesion, and activation of coagulation, thus avoiding thrombosis during HD. Unlike to traditional HD which provides only one function of removing uremic toxins, the solution collected from the outlet of the sample channel of excited AuNPs@AK showed an efficient free radical scavenger that could decrease dialysis-induced oxidative stress. In the CKD mouse model, this antioxidative solution from excited AuNPs@AK further decreased fibronectin expression and attenuated renal fibrosis, suggesting a reduced inflammatory response. These successful in vitro and in vivo approaches suggest that resonantly illuminated AuNPs@AK in HD take multiadvantages in shortening treatment time and reducing risk of adverse effects, which promise trailblazing therapeutic strategies for CKD.

The prognosis of glioblastoma remains poor, even treatment with surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy. Therefore, it is still important to develop a new strategy for treatment of glioblastoma. Previous reports demonstrated that rRNA is produced at abnormally high levels in tumor cells. Nuclear export of all non-coding RNAs are known to depend on RanGTPase system. Hydrolyzation of RanGTP-RNA complex by RanGTPase activating protein 1 (RanGAP1) releases RNA from nucleus to cytoplasm. Therefore, inhibition of RNA transportation would be a useful strategy to affect cancer cell fate. In this study, 5-30 μM of oridonin, a natural diterpenoid compound isolated from the traditional Chinese medicine, Rabdosia rubescens, induced U87MG glioma cell apoptosis and RNA accumulation in nucleus at 12h-time point. Before U87MG cell apoptosis, the RanGAP1 protein amount decreased and RanGTP accumulated in nucleus as respectively determined by immunoprecipitation and immunofluorescence, suggesting that decrease of RanGAP1 may result in nuclear entrapment of RanGTP and RNA, and then induce U87MG cell death. In contrast, over-expression of the RanGAP1 protein reversed oridonin-induced U87MG cell apoptosis. Hence, we demonstrated that downregulation of the RanGAP1 protein level by oridonin may result in RNA accumulation in nucleus via nuclear entrapment of RanGTP which eventually led to the apoptosis of glioma cells.

As a major component of the cell wall of Gram-negative bacteria, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) can be released into the bloodstream to cause a spectrum of pathophysiological reactions. Despite the fact that colon epithelium cells in situ are continuously exposed to LPS, their biological responses as provoked by LPS as well as the underlying mechanisms are poorly defined. In the present study, we observed that LPS directly stimulated growth of Caco-2 cells as well as enhanced the amounts of c-Src, which could be partly attributable to increased c-src transcript. Parallel to LPS-induced c-Src expression was FAK activation and ERK activation. Remarkably, activation of ERK and cellular proliferation by LPS could be inhibited by PP2, the specific Src inhibitor, implicating the essential role of c-Src in this process. To our knowledge, this is the first report indicating that LPS can increase cellular growth via upregulation of c-Src in colon epithelial cells.

Human lactoferrin (hLF) is a member of the transferrin family and is found in most body fluids of human. Recent study showed that hLF played some roles in the regulation of cell growth. However, the biological function of hLF in the central nervous system and neuronal cells is still unclear. The MTT was used to assay cell viability, ELISA tests were used to assay caspase activities, and TUNEL staining was used to test the cytotoxicity of hLF to the cells. Our result showed that 700 microg/ml hLF significantly reduced the cell viability and increased the caspase 3 and 8 activities in PC12 neuronal cells. TUNEL staining further showed that 700 microg/ml hLF was cytotoxic to the PC12 through apoptosis-mediated pathway. In addition, 700 microg/ml hLF significantly decreased the protein expressions of phosphorylated extracellular-signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) and Bcl-2 in PC12 cells, whereas 50 microg/ml hLF significantly increased the phosphorylation of ERK1/2 which could be specifically inhibited by PD98059. Furthermore, 50 microg/ml hLF could not only up-regulate the Bcl-2 expression but also protect PC12 cells from FasL-induced apoptosis. In conclusion, hLF plays a crucial role in the regulation of apoptosis and anti-apoptosis in PC12 neuronal cells via ERK1/2 phosphorylation pathway.

Driven by consumer demand, mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets are offering more desktop-like capabilities. High-performance CPUs and GPUs, which handle compute-intensive tasks, are key to enhancing the user experience in applications such as 3D gaming, high-definition video and internet browsing. A CPU and GPU on a tablet device, however, can together consume up to 90% of the total SoC power. As the number of CPU and GPU cores on mobile devices continues to grow, it will require innovation to keep within fixed power and thermal budgets, while providing high performance.

The alkylating agent temozolomide (TMZ) is the major chemotherapeutic drug used clinically in the treatment of malignant gliomas. This study investigated the mechanism behind TMZ-induced cell death and the possibility that resveratrol might increase TMZ efficacy. TMZ induced both apoptotic cell death and cytoprotective autophagy through a reactive oxygen species (ROS) burst and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) activation, which was suppressed by resveratrol, resulting in a decrease in autophagy and an increase in apoptosis, suggesting that the ROS/ERK pathway plays a crucial role in the fate of cells after TMZ treatment. Isobolographic analysis indicated that the combination of TMZ and resveratrol has a synergistic effect. Moreover, an in vivo mouse xenograft study also showed that coadministration of resveratrol and TMZ reduced tumor volumes by suppressing ROS/ERK-mediated autophagy and subsequently inducing apoptosis. Taken together, our data indicate that TMZ-induced ROS/ERK-mediated autophagy protected glioma cells from apoptosis, and the combination of resveratrol with TMZ could improve the efficacy of chemotherapy for brain tumors.

Modern FM radio receiver on portable devices requires low power consumption, small size and good audio performance. This paper reports a highly integrated FM radio single-chip receiver optimized for low power consumption and minimum external components. The operating frequency is 76 MHz ~ 108 MHz which covers EURO/US/Japan FM bands. The chip integrates all essential RF front-end circuits including LNA and mixer with automatic gain control (AGC), and mixed-signal functional blocks such as channel filter, limiting amplifier, integrated FM demodulator, stereo decoder, and integrated frequency locked loop (FLL). The total current consumption is only 10 mA off 2.8 V while maintaining sensitivity as low as 1.1 μV. The audio signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is 58 dB. Total harmonic distortion (THD) is less than 0.4 % and the stereo audio separation (SEP) is more than 30 dB. This chip is fabricated in 0.35 μm BiCMOS process and packaged in 28-pin 4×4 mm2 LGA.
