Acoustic imaging is an alternative way to see through aggressive media. Acoustic waves in contrary to electromagnetic waves can freely propagate through liquids, a tissue, and a variety of other materials that are non-transparent at many or all wavelengths of electromagnetic fields. Acoustic images are different from optical images in that they are essentially maps of density variations. Sound waves reflect from boundaries between different materials, carry back information about distances and changes in density and object shape to a receiving waveguide matrix. Proposing remote acoustic imaging is a new imaging technique that uses acoustic probe pulses and a receiving waveguide matrix to detect and view objects inside a liquid that is opaque to light. Spatial resolution of the method is derived by efficiency of ultrasonic scattering at objects, sensitivity of an ultrasonic radiation-reception matrix and the number of waveguides and the distance between them. The technique is useful when efforts are concentrated at revealing presence, location and shape of small objects. In the paper theoretical analysis of interaction of probe ultrasonic radiation with diverse types of small objects has been done. The study aims to increase the accuracy of experimental methods for measuring acoustic radiation (AR) force acting on a millimeter-sized spherical scatterer in a liquid from a focused ultrasound beam[1], which was generated by a single-element, piezoceramic transducer positioned at the bottom of a water tank. The spherical scatterer was positioned on the vertically-oriented axis of the beam. The scatterer was fixed in a frame with 3-level trap of thin fishing lines. The measurement method is based on the balance between the AR, gravity, and buoyancy forces acting on the object, and initiation of its movement when the value of AR force crosses a certain threshold. The threshold power corresponded to the condition when the AR force was equal to the difference between the gravity and buoyancy forces. The AR force was calculated numerically using parameters of the scatterer and the known angular spectrum of the beam, which was determined from the acoustic hologram[2]. Experimental and theoretical results were in a good agreement in pre-focal and post-focal regions with an average error of 10%. If the beamwidth is smaller than the scatterer diameter, the most effective pushing occurred after the focus, where the beam was slightly wider than the scatterer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents the method of magneto-acoustic biofabrication of a bioengineering construct from tissue spheroids. It allows creating tissue constructs of tubular shapes. Collected together in a magneto-acoustic trap, tissue spheroids contact with each other and thus fuse to form a 3D tissue construct. The magnetic system was made of two oppositely oriented permanent magnets with an empty space between them. A cylindrical ultrasonic transducer was placed into this space, and a container with tissue spheroids was placed inside the piezoceramic cylinder. The construct was formed in the region, where magnetophoretic forces in the vertical direction compensated gravity, and due to the magnetic gradient in the horizontal plane, the tissue spheroids moved towards each other, levitating above the bottom of the container. The piezoelectric transducer created standing cylindrical ultrasonic waves. The acoustic radiation force acted from the antinode to the node, forming a ring of tissue spheroids. Holding them in this trap for 18-20 hours led to the merging of spheroids into a solid ring-shaped living construct. Changes of the wave frequency and amplitude made it possible to manipulate the size and width of the resulting tissue ring. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The use of traditional ultrasound imaging systems in critical conditions, for example at high temperature, in the presence of chemically active media or increased radiation levels, is often impossible. An approach based on the concept of an ”ultrasound endoscope” to remotely display the area of interest through a long bundle of solid rods is proposed. Each rod serves as a waveguide that transfers an ultrasonic pulse from one end located in an aggressive medium to the other end located at a distance in favorable conditions. The diameter of the rods is less than the wavelength to ensure that the ultrasonic pulses used to form the image propagate as the lowest-order longitudinal mode, which is almost non-dispersive and much faster than other possible modes (bending and torsional motions). The results of studies of the 1024-channel waveguide system of megahertz range made of a bundle of stainless steel rods are presented. The obtained images of millimetersized scatterers in water demonstrate feasibility of the proposed system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
A method is proposed for using a set of acoustic waveguides in the form of a bundle of solid rods to create a multi-element receiving array in liquids. The principle of operation is based on the transmission of an ultrasonic signal from one end of a rod, which is immersed in a liquid, to its other end, which is remote from this liquid. The use of a set of acoustically isolated single-mode waveguides makes it possible to minimize the crosstalk between the receiving array elements (the input ends of each rod). In the experiment, formation of a multi-element array was performed by the aperture synthesis technique using a single rod that was translated step-by-step in the lateral direction by a computer-controlled 3D positioning system. Test acoustic scatterers were placed on the surface of the transducer of 1 Mhz frequency immersed in water. Vibration of the output end of the rod was recorded by a piezoelectric crystal glued to the rod end. The image formation was performed using back-propagation calculations. It is shown that the resulting ultrasonic image of the scatterers provides good localization of all targets demonstrating a potential for the proposed system to be used for ultrasonic imaging. - Abstract
A method for measuring acoustic radiation force (ARF) acting on a mm-sized spherical object positioned on an axis of a focused ultrasound beam is proposed. The method is based on the balance between the ARF, gravity, and buoyancy forces acting on the object and initiating its movement when the value of the ARF crosses a certain threshold. Single-element 1.072 MHz transducer (100 mm aperture and 70 mm focal length) was used to generate a focused ultrasound beam in upward vertical direction in water. A spherical nylon target (6 mm diameter) was positioned at different distances along the beam axis. For each distance the beam power was gradually decreased until the target started to move down from a trap. At this threshold source power, the value of ARF was determined as a difference between the gravity and buoyancy forces. ARF was also calculated from the pressure distribution reconstructed from an acoustic hologram of the source and parameters of the scatterer. Experimental and theoretical results were in a good agreement in post focal region of the beam. It was shown that the most effective pushing occurred before and after the focus where the beam was slightly wider than the scatterer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Modern ultrasound imaging is usually performed using pulse-echo principle, i.e. it utilizes backscattering of short acoustic pulses. In contrary, conventional optical imaging is based on continuous light waves. Similar approach is possible in acoustics as well. Holography is a method of recording wave scattering from an object such that the object's shape and position can be reconstructed later. The holographic approach used here relies on the principle of a time-reversal mirror and the Rayleigh integral. An ultrasonic beam consisting of long tone bursts is directed at a target object and the resulting acoustic field is measured at a large number of points surrounding the object. A computer-controlled positioning system is used to scan a small broadband hydrophone across a grid of measurement points in a single surface near the target. Object reconstruction is then accomplished numerically by back-propagating of the acoustic field from measurement locations to a 3D region representing the object. Theoretically, the accuracy and the optimal parameters of the method were studied by modeling forward and backward propagation from a point scatterer. Experimentally set of 3-mm diameter plastic beads and a piece of styrofoam with a rough surface and a diameter of several cm were investigated. Ultrasound frequencies from 1 to 4 MHz were considered, while hologram measurements were collected with grid spacings between 0.2 and 0.4 mm. Using this 3D ultrasonic holography method, it is possible to reconstruct the position and shape of objects or collections of objects that do not involve a significant amount of multiple scattering. Because the spatial resolution of the method has a typical diffraction limit on the order of a wavelength, improved spatial resolution can be achieved with higher frequencies and increased angular size of scanning region. Acoustic radiation force is a nonlinear acoustic effect caused by the transfer of wave momentum to absorbing or scattering objects. This phenomenon is exploited in modern ultrasound metrology for measurement of the acoustic power radiated by a source and is used for both therapeutic and diagnostic sources in medical applications. To calculate radiation force an acoustic hologram can be used in conjunction with analytical expressions based on the angular spectrum of the measured field. The results of an experimental investigation of radiation forces in two different cases are presented in this paper. In one case, the radiation force of an obliquely incident ultrasound beam on a large absorber (which completely absorbs the beam) is considered. The second case concerns measurement of the radiation force on a spherical target that is small compared to the beam diameter. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
