5. Impact of harvesting time on the chemical composition and quality of fresh lotus seeds

Abstract

This study compared the physicochemical properties and sensory quality of fresh lotus seeds of ‘Mantianxing’ and ‘No.36 space lotus’. The results showed that along with the maturation of seeds, the seed shell color changed from green to brown and that of the plumule turned from yellow to green. In addition, the moisture content decreased, the hardness significantly increased, and the plumpness remained constant. The above changes occurred 4 days earlier in August than in September. During maturation, the total phenol content and DPPH free radical scavenging capacity decreased; the soluble sugar content and sweet taste first increased and then decreased; and the alkaloid content and bitter taste showed an overall increasing trend. Hence, the quality of fresh lotus seeds is determined by the harvesting time, and lotus seeds harvested on day 14 in August and day 18 in September have the highest fresh quality.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the impact of ferulic acid pretreatment on the hardness of Chinese radish after cooking. Radish slices were immersed in ferulic acid solution and distilled water, respectively. The ferulic acid treated samples showed significantly higher hardness (p < 0.05) than the control samples after cooking, and could keep relatively more integrated cell wall structure after cooking at 100 °C for 30 min. Subsequently, we determined the cell wall fraction contents, sugar ratio and molecular weight distribution of different treated samples. Ferulic acid treated groups showed higher percentage of chelate-soluble fraction (CSF) and sugar ratio 1 than the control groups in both fresh and cooked samples. The CSF had two high molecular weight peaks at 7.7 min and 8.6 min, probably due to the cross-linking with ferulic acid. This research may provide an effective way to decrease the softening of thermally processed fruits and vegetables.

Abstract

A fractional vegetation cover (FVC) estimation method incorporating a vegetation growth model and a radiative transfer model was previously developed, which was suitable for FVC estimation in homogeneous areas because the finer-resolution pixels corresponding to one coarse-resolution FVC pixel were all assumed to have the same vegetation growth model. However, this assumption does not hold over heterogeneous areas, meaning that the method cannot be applied to large regions. Therefore, this study proposes a finer spatial resolution FVC estimation method applicable to heterogeneous areas using Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager reflectance data and Global LAnd Surface Satellite (GLASS) FVC product. The FVC product was first decomposed according to the normalized difference vegetation index from the Landsat 8 OLI data. Then, independent dynamic vegetation models were built for each finer-resolution pixel. Finally, the dynamic vegetation model and a radiative transfer model were combined to estimate FVC at the Landsat 8 scale. Validation results indicated that the proposed method (R2 = 0.7757, RMSE = 0.0881) performed better than either the previous method (R2 = 0.7038, RMSE = 0.1125) or a commonly used method involving look-up table inversions of the PROSAIL model (R2 = 0.7457, RMSE = 0.1249). Abstract

Background:B-cell maturation antigen (BCMA)-targeted chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T-cell) therapy has exhibited remarkable efficacy in refractory or relapsed multiple myeloma (R/R MM), but recurrence and rapid progression of disease are still observed in some cases within a short time after treatment. Long-term pomalidomide therapy, which potentiates T-cell functionality and has direct antimyeloma effects, might enhance the efficacy of BCMA CAR-T-cell therapy. Here, we present the efficacy of this combination regimen for R/R MM.
