Abstract

The aim of AMADEUS is to provide unprecedented experimental information on K$^-$ absorption in light nuclear targets, to face major open problems in hadron nuclear physics in the strangeness sector, namely the nature of the $\Lambda$(1405), strongly related to the possible existence of kaonic nuclear clusters, kaons and hyperon scattering cross sections on nucleons and nuclei. These issues are fundamental for a better understanding of the non-perturbative QCD in the strangeness sector. AMADEUS step 0 deals with the analysis of the 2004-2005 KLOE collected data. The interactions of the negative kaons produced by the DA$\Phi$NE collider (a unique source of monochromatic low-momentum kaons) with the materials of the KLOE detector, used as active targets, provide samples of K$^-$ absorptions on H, ${}^4$He, ${}^{9}$Be and ${}^{12}$C, both at-rest and in-flight. A second step deals with the data from the implementation in the central region of the KLOE detector of a pure graphite target, providing a high statistic sample of K$^- \, {}^{12}$C nuclear captures at rest. Abstract

The AMADEUS experiment deals with the investigation of the low-energy kaon-nuclei hadronic interaction at the DA{\Phi}NE collider at LNF-INFN, which is fundamental to respond longstanding questions in the non-perturbative QCD strangeness sector. The antikaon-nucleon potential is investigated searching for signals from possible bound kaonic clusters, which would open the possibility for the formation of cold dense baryonic matter. The confirmation of this scenario may imply a fundamental role of strangeness in astrophysics. AMADEUS step 0 consisted in the reanalysis of 2004/2005 KLOE dataset, exploiting K- absorptions in H, 4He, 9Be and 12C in the setup materials. Abstract

We report the measurement of K$^-$ absorption processes in the $\Sigma^0$p final state and the first exclusive measurement of the two nucleon absorption (2NA) with the KLOE detector. The 2NA process without further interactions is found to be 12\% of the sum of all other contributing processes, including absorption on three and more nucleons or 2NA followed by final state interactions with the residual nucleons. We also determine the possible contribution of the ppK$^-$ bound state to the $\Sigma^0$p final state. A yield of ppK$^- /\mathrm{K^-_{stop}}$ is found to be $(0.044 \pm 0.009\, stat ^{+ 0.004} _{- 0.005} \,syst) \cdot 10^{-2}$ but its statistical significance based on an F-test is only 1$\sigma$.

AMADEUS takes advantage of the DA$\Phi$NE collider, which provides a unique source of monochromatic low-momentum kaons and exploits the KLOE detector as an active target, in order to obtain excellent acceptance and resolution data for $K^-$ nuclear capture on H, ${}^4$He, ${}^{9}$Be and ${}^{12}$C, both at-rest and in-flight. During the second half of 2012 a successful data taking was performed with a dedicated pure carbon target implemented in the central region of KLOE, providing a high statistic sample of pure at-rest $K^-$ nuclear interactions. Abstract

The antikaon-nucleon interaction close to threshold provides crucial information on the interplay between spontaneous and explicit chiral symmetry breaking in low-energy QCD. In this context the importance of kaonic deuterium X-ray spectroscopy has been well recognized, but no experimental results have yet been obtained due to the difficulty of the measurement. We propose to measure the shift and width of the kaonic deuterium 1s state with an accuracy of 60 eV and 140 eV respectively at J-PARC. These results together with the kaonic hydrogen data (KpX at KEK, DEAR and SIDDHARTA at DAFNE) will then permit the determination of values of both the isospin I=0 and I=1 antikaon-nucleon scattering lengths and will provide the most stringent constraints on the antikaon-nucleon interaction, promising a breakthrough. Refined Monte Carlo studies were performed, including the investigation of background suppression factors for the described setup. These studies have demonstrated the feasibility of determining the shift and width of the kaonic deuterium atom 1s state with the desired accuracy of 60 eV and 140 eV., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

The AMADEUS experiment aims to perform precision studies in the sector of low-energy kaon-nuclei interaction at the DA\Phi NE collider at LNF-INFN, implementing a dedicated setup in the central region of the KLOE detector. As a first step towards the AMADEUS realization the existing KLOE data (runs from 2002 to 2005) were analysed using the detector itself as an active target. K^- nuclear interactions in the gas filling the KLOE drift chamber (Helium 90% and Isobutane 10%) and the drift chamber entrance wall (mainly Carbon) were explored. Starting point was the reconstruction of the \Lambda(1116) trough its decay into a proton and a pion (BR = 63.9 \pm 0.5%). Taking advantage of the good performances of the KLOE calorimeter in detecting photons we then focused on the investigation of the \Lambda(1405), through its decay into \Sigma^0\pi^0. Abstract

The AMADEUS collaboration has the goal to perform unprecedented measurements in the field of the low-energy charged kaons-nuclei interactions, by implementing the existing KLOE detector with a dedicated setup in the inner region. As a preliminary step towards the realization, the AMADEUS team has analyzed the existent 2002-2005 KLOE data, studying the processes resulting from the negative kaons nuclear absorption in the entrance wall of the KLOE Drift Chamber (containing mostly carbon) and in the gas filling it, mostly helium. Processes containing Lambda-p and Lambda-d in the final state were looked for, together with the search for the Lambda(1405) going in both the neutral and the charged Sigma-pi channels. These analyses produced unique results, proving the possibility to obtain, for the first time, invariant mass spectra of the Lambda(1405) for all the possible decay channels. This was possible thanks to the unique features of the KLOE detector, including the excellent photon detection of its calorimeter. In addition to these results, other interesting effects like the Sigma->Lambda internal conversion could be investigated. Preliminary results on the Sigma+pi- decay channel and on the Sigma->Lambda internal conversion will be presented.

Abstract

The AMADEUS collaboration studied the K− absorptions at low momentum in light nuclei leading to Σ0p final state. Those events were recorded by the KLOE detector, used as an active target, installed in the the DAΦNE collider. The results show that it is possible to isolate the process where the K− is absorbed by two nucleons and the decay products are emitted without any further final state interactions among other contributions involving more than two nucleons. Further, the possible contribution of a ppK− bound state was investigated. The best fit gives space to a yield of ppK−/Kstop− = (0.044 ± 0.009 stat−0.005+0.004) × 10−2 corresponding to a binding energy and a width of 45 and 30 MeV/c2, respectively. A statistical analysis of this result shows although that its significance is only at the level of 1σ.

The AMADEUS physics program and preliminary results from the analysis of KLOE data will be discussed.

Abstract

The AMADEUS collaboration studied the K- absorptions at low momentum in light nuclei leading to Σ0p final state. Those events were recorded by the KLOE detector, used as an active target, installed in the the DAΦNE collider. The results show that it is possible to isolate the process where the K- is absorbed by two nucleons and the decay products are emitted without any further final state interactions among other contributions involving more than two nucleons. Further, the possible contribution of a ppK- bound state was investigated. The best fit gives space to a yield of ppK-/K-stop =(0.044 ± 0.009 stat+0.004 -0.005 syst) ×10-2 corresponding to a binding energy and a width of 45 and 30 MeV/c2, respectively. A statistical analysis of this result shows although that its significance is only at the level of 1σ. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The AMADEUS experiment aims to perform precision studies in the sector of low-energy kaon-nuclei interaction at the DA��NE collider at LNF-INFN, implementing a dedicated setup in the central region of the KLOE detector. As a first step towards the AMADEUS realization the existing KLOE data (runs from 2002 to 2005) were analysed using the detector itself as an active target. K^- nuclear interactions in the gas filling the KLOE drift chamber (Helium 90% and Isobutane 10%) and the drift chamber entrance wall (mainly Carbon) were explored. Starting point was the reconstruction of the ��(1116) trough its decay into a proton and a pion (BR = 63.9 \pm 0.5%). Taking advantage of the good performances of the KLOE calorimeter in detecting photons we then focused on the investigation of the ��(1405), through its decay into ��^0��^0.
