In South Africa, inequalities endemic to HE systems worldwide are further compounded by apartheid legacies. Despite an intensive focus for over twenty years on how pedagogic intervention could be harnessed to address these inequalities, black students' participation and success rates in South African HE remain stubbornly low, suggesting a need for fresh perspectives. This paper draws on a study conducted in a South African vocational university to illuminate the complex nature of lecturers' writing pedagogies. It does this by placing lecturers at the centre of detailed qualitative enquiry, a relatively rare focus in student writing research. We show how lecturers understand student writing development and how their pedagogies are informed by language ideologies operating within and beyond the university. Findings suggest the need to engage with the complex lived experiences of lecturers in order to promote deeper pedagogical change, both in South Africa and the HE sector more widely.

Vocational universities are increasingly becoming susceptible to pressures associated with the phenomenon known as 'academic drift'. Yet the specific influence of such pressures is experienced differently at various institutional levels and by different stakeholders in such universities. Exploring lecturers' understanding and perceptions of student academic writing can make visible the ways in which these pressures are realised, for example, in the types of writing given value and writing pedagogies deemed suitable in the context of the vocational university. In this paper, we report on an ethnographically shaped study exploring lecturers' writing pedagogies and perceptions of students as academic writers at a South African vocational university. The study analytically illustrated how wider socio-political, regulatory and ideological framings of these universities were implicated in lecturers' writing practices and pedagogies. The study found that lecturers and students were generally constricted by narrow vocationalist agendas, which reinforced negative conceptions of students as academic writers. Our findings suggest that while the explicit impact of academic drift drivers was minimally felt at the undergraduate diploma level of study in our research site, this appeared to close off the potential for writing to act as a means to facilitate students' epistemic access to their disciplines.

Assessors' perspectives on their evaluative practices remain relatively under-researched. Given evidence that higher education assessment and feedback continue to be problematic, this paper proposes a specific methodological innovation with potential to contribute both to research and practice in this area. It explores the potential of a micro-analysis of textual engagement, nested within an ethnographic approach, to defamiliarize the often taken-for-granted practice of marking. The study on which the paper is based used screen capture combined with audio-recorded, concurrent talk-around-text to throw light on the processes, strategies and perspectives of eight teachers within one university as they assessed undergraduates' work. This close-up focus was nested within broader ethnographic data generation incorporating interviews, marked assignments and other assessment-related texts. The paper presents selected 'moments of engagement' to show how this methodology can offer a renewed understanding of evaluative literacies as complex, 'messy' and shot through with influences invisible in the final assessed text but which may nevertheless be highly consequential. The paper concludes by reflecting on the potential for this type of data and analysis to contribute to assessor development and inform debate about the future of higher education assessment. A growing body of academic literacies research has enhanced our understanding of university writing as contested, institutionally situated practice with important consequences, particularly for students as they learn to negotiate the writing demands of university study. Less empirical attention has been paid to the practices of subject academics as they guide, set, and assess student writing. This paper is based on an ethnographically oriented study of 14 UK university teachers in diverse institutional and disciplinary contexts. Data presented illustrate the ways in which competing discourses of writing as "skills" and as "learning" are played out in individuals' practices, in their institutional contexts. Analysis shows how a dominant discourse of writing as "skills" becomes associated with particular ideas about the value of writing work, how and by whom it should be done, and points to consequences for students, teachers and for the role of academic writing in teaching and learning at university.

The lived experience of academic teachers as they engage in feedback has received relatively little attention compared to student perspectives on feedback. The present study used an ethnographically informed methodology to investigate the everyday practices around undergraduates' writing of fourteen UK HE teachers, in a range of disciplines and institutions, focusing on teachers' perspectives. This paper presents analysis of interviews conducted as part of the study, in which feedback-giving emerged as significant, understood by participants in several potentially dissonant ways: as institutional requirement, as work and as dialogue. Findings suggest participants sometimes managed to reconcile these conflicts and carve out small spaces for dialogue with students, and also indicate that attempts to create greater opportunities for such work, by offering greater support and recognition at institutional level, must take account of teachers' need for a sense of personal investment in student writing in their disciplinary contexts.
