5G systems are being deployed all over the world and one key enabler of these systems is massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO). This technology has brought large performance gains in terms of serving many users. Despite the possibility to further exploit the spatial domain, there are situations where it is not possible to offer more than a single, or a few, data streams per user and where cell-edge coverage is an issue due to the lack of enough efficient channel scatterers. Looking ahead, distributed MIMO systems, where the antennas are spread over a larger area, are investigated for next generation systems. However, distributed MIMO comes with many practical deployment issues, making it a big challenge to adopt. As another way forward, we envision repeater-assisted cellular massive MIMO, where repeaters are deployed to act as channel scatterers to increase the rank of the channel and provide macro diversity for improved coverage and reliability. After elaborating on the requirements and hardware aspects of repeaters that enable this vision, we demonstrate through simulations the potential of repeater-assisted cellular massive MIMO to achieve distributed MIMO performance. The integration of high-precision cellular localization and machine learning (ML) is considered a cornerstone technique in future cellular navigation systems, offering unparalleled accuracy and functionality. This study focuses on localization based on uplink channel measurements in a fifth-generation (5G) new radio (NR) system. An attention-aided ML-based single-snapshot localization pipeline is presented, which consists of several cascaded blocks, namely a signal processing block, an attention-aided block, and an uncertainty estimation block. Specifically, the signal processing block generates an impulse response beam matrix for all beams. The attention-aided block trains on the channel impulse responses using an attention-aided network, which captures the correlation between impulse responses for different beams. The uncertainty estimation block predicts the probability density function of the UE position, thereby also indicating the confidence level of the localization result. Two representative uncertainty estimation techniques, the negative log-likelihood and the regression-by-classification techniques, are applied and compared. Furthermore, for dynamic measurements with multiple snapshots available, we combine the proposed pipeline with a Kalman filter to enhance localization accuracy. To evaluate our approach, we extract channel impulse responses for different beams from a commercial base station. The outdoor measurement campaign covers Line-of-Sight (LoS), Non-Line-of-Sight (NLoS), and a mix of LoS and NLoS scenarios. Millimeter-wave (mmWave) technology holds the potential to revolutionize head-mounted displays (HMDs) by enabling high-speed wireless communication with nearby processing nodes, where complex video rendering can take place. However, the sparse angular profile of mmWave channels, coupled with the narrow field of view (FoV) of patch-antenna arrays and frequent HMD rotation, can lead to poor performance. We introduce six channel performance metrics to evaluate the performance of an HMD equipped with mmWave arrays. We analyze the metrics using analytical models, discuss their impact for the application, and apply them to 28 GHz channel sounding data, collected in a conference room using eight HMD patch-antenna arrays, offset by 45 degrees from each other in azimuth. Our findings confirm that a single array performs poorly due to the narrow FoV, and featuring multiple arrays along the HMD's azimuth is required. Namely, the broader FoV stabilizes channel gain during HMD rotation, lessens the attenuation caused by line of sight (LoS) obstruction, and increases the channel's spatial multiplexing capability. In light of our findings, we conclude that it is imperative to either equip the HMD with multiple arrays or, as an alternative approach, incorporate macroscopic diversity by leveraging distributed access point (AP) infrastructure.

Distributed multiple-input multiple-output (D-MIMO) is a promising technology for simultaneous communication and positioning. However, phase synchronization between multiple access points in D-MIMO is challenging and methods that function without the need for phase synchronization are highly desired. Therefore, we present a method for D-MIMO that performs direct positioning of a moving device based on the delay-Doppler characteristics of the channel state information (CSI). Our method relies on particle-filter-based Bayesian inference with a state-space model. Channel sounding is a vital step in understanding wireless channels for the design and deployment of wireless communication systems. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of a coherent distributed massive MIMO channel sounder operating at 5-6 GHz with a bandwidth of 400 MHz based on the NI USRP X410. Through the integration of transceiver chains and RF switches, the design facilitates the use of a larger number of antennas without significant compromise in dynamic capability. Our current implementation is capable of measuring thousands of antenna combinations within tens of milliseconds. Every radio frequency switch is seamlessly integrated with a 16-element antenna array, making the antennas more practical to be transported and flexibly distributed. In addition, the channel sounder features real-time processing to reduce the data stream to the host computer and increase the signal-to-noise ratio. The design and implementation are verified through two measurements in an indoor laboratory environment. The first measurement entails a single-antenna robot as transmitter and 128 distributed receiving antennas. The second measurement demonstrates a passive sensing scenario with a walking person. We evaluate the results of both measurements using the super-resolution algorithm SAGE. The results demonstrate the great potential of the presented sounding system for providing high-quality radio channel measurements, contributing to high-resolution channel estimation, characterization, and active and passive sensing in realistic and dynamic scenarios.

In this paper, we present a multipath-based simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithm that continuously adapts mulitiple map feature (MF) models describing specularly reflected multipath components (MPCs) from flat surfaces and point-scattered MPCs, respectively. We develop a Bayesian model for sequential detection and estimation of interacting MF model parameters, MF states and mobile agent's state including position and orientation. The Bayesian model is represented by a factor graph enabling the use of belief propagation (BP) for efficient computation of the marginal posterior distributions. The algorithm also exploits amplitude information enabling reliable detection of weak MFs associated with MPCs of very low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated using real millimeter-wave (mmWave) multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) measurements with single base station setup. mmWave communication has come up as the unexplored spectrum for 5G services. With new standards for 5G NR positioning, more off-the-shelf platforms and algorithms are needed to perform indoor positioning. An object can be accurately positioned in a room either by using an angle and a delay estimate or two angle estimates or three delay estimates. We propose an algorithm to jointly estimate the angle of arrival (AoA) and angle of departure (AoD), based only on the received signal strength (RSS). We use mm-FLEX, an experimentation platform developed by IMDEA Networks Institute that can perform real-time signal processing for experimental validation of our proposed algorithm. Codebook-based beampatterns are used with a uniquely placed multi-antenna array setup to enhance the reception of multipath components and we obtain an AoA estimate per receiver thereby overcoming the line-of-sight (LoS) limitation of RSS-based localization systems. Many concepts for future generations of wireless communication systems use coherent processing of signals from many distributed antennas. The aim is to improve communication reliability, capacity, and energy efficiency and provide possibilities for new applications through integrated communication and sensing. The large bandwidths available in the higher bands have inspired much work regarding sensing in the mmWave and sub-THz bands; however, the sub-6 GHz cellular bands will still be the main provider of wide cellular coverage due to the more favorable propagation conditions. In this paper, we present a measurement system and results of sub-6 GHz distributed MIMO measurements performed in an industrial environment. From the measurements, we evaluated the diversity for both large-scale and small-scale fading and characterized the link reliability. We also analyzed the possibility of multistatic sensing and positioning of users in the environment, with the initial results showing a mean-square error below 20 cm on the estimated position. Hybrid analog-digital beamforming stands out as a key enabler for future communication systems with a massive number of antennas. In this paper, we investigate the hybrid precoder design problem for angle-of-departure (AoD) estimation, where we take into account the practical constraint on the limited resolution of phase shifters. Our goal is to design a radio-frequency (RF) precoder and a base-band (BB) precoder to estimate AoD of the user with a high accuracy. To this end, we propose a two-step strategy where we first obtain the fully digital precoder that minimizes the angle error bound, and then the resulting digital precoder is decomposed into an RF precoder and a BB precoder, based on the alternating optimization and the alternating direction method of multipliers. Besides, we derive the quantization error upper bound and analyse the convergence behavior of the proposed algorithm. Numerical results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed method over state-of-the-art baselines.

Immersing a user in life-like extended reality (XR) scenery using a head-mounted display (HMD) with a constrained form factor and hardware complexity requires remote rendering on a nearby edge server or computer. Millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication technology can provide sufficient data rate for wireless XR content transmission. However, mmWave channels exhibit severe sparsity in the angular domain. This means that distributed antenna arrays are required to cover a larger angular area and to combat outage during HMD rotation. At the same time, one would prefer fewer antenna elements/arrays for a lower complexity system. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the trade-off between the number of antenna arrays and the achievable performance to find a proper practical solution. This work presents indoor 28 GHz mmWave channel measurement data, collected during HMD mobility, and studies the dominant eigenmode (DE) gain. DE gain is a significant factor in understanding system performance since mmWave channel sparsity and eigenmode imbalance often results in provisioning the majority of the available power to the DE. Moreover, it provides the upper performance bounds for widely-adopted analog beamformers. We propose 3 performance metrics - gain trade-off, gain volatility, and minimum service trade-off - for evaluating the performance of a multi-array HMD and apply the metrics to indoor 28 GHz channel measurement data. Evaluation results indicate, that 3 arrays provide stable temporal channel gain. Adding a 4th array further increases channel capacity, while any additional arrays do not significantly increase physical layer performance.

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces have emerged as a technology with the potential to enhance wireless communication performance for 5G and beyond. However, the technology comes with challenges in areas such as complexity, power consumption, and cost. This paper demonstrates a computer vision-based reconfigurable intelligent surface beamforming algorithm that addresses complexity and cost issues and analyzes the multipath components that arise from the insertion of such a device into the wireless channel. The results show that a reconfigurable intelligent surface can provide an additional multipath component. We present a unique comparative analysis, and evaluation of vision, radio, and audio based localization algorithms. We create the first baseline for the aforementioned sensors using the recently published Lund University Vision, Radio, and Audio (LuViRA) dataset, where all the sensors are synchronized and measured in the same environment. Some of the challenges of using each specific sensor for indoor localization tasks are highlighted. Each sensor is paired with a current state-of-the-art localization algorithm and evaluated for different aspects: localization accuracy, reliability and sensitivity to environment changes, calibration requirements, and potential system complexity. Specifically, the evaluation covers the ORB-SLAM3 algorithm for vision-based localization with an RGB-D camera, a machine-learning algorithm for radio-based localization with massive MIMO technology, and the SFS2 algorithm for audio-based localization with distributed microphones. The results can serve as a guideline and basis for further development of robust and high-precision multi-sensory localization systems, e.g., through sensor fusion, context, and environment-aware adaptation., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures

Radio signals are used broadly as navigation aids, and current and future terrestrial wireless communication systems have properties that make their dual-use for this purpose attractive. Sub-6 GHz carrier frequencies enable widespread coverage for data communication and navigation, but typically offer smaller bandwidths and limited resolution for precise estimation of geometries, particularly in environments where propagation channels are diffuse in time and/or space. Non-parametric methods have been employed with some success for such scenarios both commercially and in literature, but often with an emphasis on low-cost hardware and simple models of propagation, or with simulations that do not fully capture hardware impairments and complex propagation mechanisms. In this article, we make opportunistic observations of downlink signals transmitted by commercial cellular networks by using a software-defined radio and massive antenna array mounted on a passenger vehicle in an urban non line-of-sight scenario, together with a ground truth reference for vehicle pose. With these observations as inputs, we employ artificial neural networks to generate estimates of vehicle location and heading for various artificial neural network architectures and different representations of the input observation data, which we call wiometrics, and compare the performance for navigation. Position accuracy on the order of a few meters, and heading accuracy of a few degrees, are achieved for the best-performing combinations of networks and wiometrics. Based on the results of the experiments we draw conclusions regarding possible future directions for wireless navigation using statistical methods.

The geometry-based stochastic channel models (GSCM), which can describe realistic channel impulse responses, often rely on the existence of both {\em local} and {\em far} scatterers. However, their visibility from both the base station (BS) and mobile station (MS) depends on their relative heights and positions. For example, the condition of visibility of a scatterer from the perspective of a BS is different from that of an MS and depends on the height of the scatterer. To capture this, we propose a novel GSCM where each scatterer has dual disk visibility regions (VRs) centered on itself for both BS and MS, with their radii being our model parameters. Our model consists of {\em short} and {\em tall} scatterers, which are both modeled using independent inhomogeneous Poisson point processes (IPPPs) having distinct dual VRs. We also introduce a probability parameter to account for the varying visibility of tall scatterers from different MSs, effectively emulating their noncontiguous VRs. Using stochastic geometry, we derive the probability mass function (PMF) of the number of multipath components (MPCs), the marginal and joint distance distributions for an active scatterer, the mean time of arrival (ToA), and the mean received power through non-line-of-sight (NLoS) paths for our proposed model. This paper deals with propagation and channel modeling for physically large arrays. The focus lies on acquiring a spatially consistent model, which is essential, especially for positioning and sensing applications. Ultra-wideband, synthetic array measurement data have been acquired with large positioning devices to support this research. We present a modified multipath channel model that accounts for a varying visibility of multipath components along a large array. Based on a geometric model of the measurement environment, we analyze the visibility of specular components. We show that, depending on the size of the reflecting surface, geometric visibility and amplitude estimates obtained with a super-resolution channel estimation algorithm show a strong correspondence. Multiple concepts for future generations of wireless communication standards utilize coherent processing of signals from many distributed antennas. Names for these concepts include distributed MIMO, cell-free massive MIMO, XL-MIMO, and large intelligent surfaces. Channel sounding is essential for the development of radio systems. One flexible strategy is the switched-array-based channel sounding, where antenna elements are activated at different time instants to measure the channel spatial characteristics. Although its hardware complexity is decreased due to fewer radio-frequency (RF) chains, sequentially switching the antenna elements can result in aliasing in the joint estimation of angles and Doppler frequencies of multipath components (MPCs). Therefore, pseudo-random switching has been proposed to mitigate such aliasing and increase estimation accuracy in both angular and Doppler domains. Nevertheless, the increased Doppler resolution could cause additional post-processing complexity of parameter estimation, which is relevant when the Doppler frequencies are not of interest, e.g., for spatial channel modeling. This paper proposes an improved hybrid sequential and random switching scheme. The primary purpose is to maintain the estimation accuracy of angles of MPCs while decreasing the resolution of Doppler frequencies for minimized complexity of channel parameter estimation. A simulated-annealing algorithm is exploited to obtain an optimized switching sequence. Cellular user positioning is a promising service provided by Fifth Generation New Radio (5G NR) networks. Besides, Machine Learning (ML) techniques are foreseen to become an integrated part of 5G NR systems improving radio performance and reducing complexity. In this paper, we investigate ML techniques for positioning using 5G NR fingerprints consisting of uplink channel estimates from the physical layer channel. We show that it is possible to use Sounding Reference Signals (SRS) channel fingerprints to provide sufficient data to infer user position. Positioning with 5G signals generally requires connection to several base stations (BSs), which makes positioning more demanding in terms of infrastructure than communications. To address this issue, there have been several theoretical studies on single BS positioning, leveraging high-resolution angle and delay estimation and multipath exploitation possibilities at mmWave frequencies. This paper presents the first realistic experimental validation of such studies, involving a commercial 5G mmWave BS and a user equipment (UE) development kit mounted on a test vehicle. We present the relevant signal models, signal processing methods (including channel parameter estimation and position estimation), and validate these based on real data collected in an outdoor science park environment. Our results indicate that positioning is possible, but the performance with a single BS is limited by the knowledge of the position and orientation of the infrastructure and the multipath visibility and diversity.

High-precision cellular-based localization is one of the key technologies for next-generation communication systems. In this paper, we investigate the potential of applying machine learning (ML) to a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system to enhance localization accuracy. We analyze a new ML-based localization pipeline that has two parallel fully connected neural networks (FCNN). The first FCNN takes the instantaneous spatial covariance matrix to capture angular information, while the second FCNN takes the channel impulse responses to capture delay information. We fuse the estimated coordinates of these two FCNNs for further accuracy improvement. To test the localization algorithm, we performed an indoor measurement campaign with a massive MIMO testbed at 3.7GHz. We present a synchronized multisensory dataset for accurate and robust indoor localization: the Lund University Vision, Radio, and Audio (LuViRA) Dataset. The dataset includes color images, corresponding depth maps, inertial measurement unit (IMU) readings, channel response between a 5G massive multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) testbed and user equipment, audio recorded by 12 microphones, and accurate six degrees of freedom (6DOF) pose ground truth of 0.5 mm. We synchronize these sensors to ensure that all data is recorded simultaneously. A camera, speaker, and transmit antenna are placed on top of a slowly moving service robot, and 89 trajectories are recorded. Each trajectory includes 20 to 50 seconds of recorded sensor data and ground truth labels. Data from different sensors can be used separately or jointly to perform localization tasks, and data from the motion capture (mocap) system is used to verify the results obtained by the localization algorithms. The main aim of this dataset is to enable research on sensor fusion with the most commonly used sensors for localization tasks. Opportunistic navigation using cellular signals is appealing for scenarios where other navigation technologies face challenges. In this paper, long-term evolution (LTE) downlink signals from two neighboring commercial base stations (BS) are received by a massive antenna array mounted on a passenger vehicle. Multipath component (MPC) delays and angle-of-arrival (AOA) extracted from the received signals are used to jointly estimate the positions of the vehicle, transmitters, and virtual transmitters (VT) with an extended fast simultaneous localization and mapping (FastSLAM) algorithm. The results show that the algorithm can accurately estimate the positions of the vehicle and the transmitters (and virtual transmitters). The vehicle's horizontal position error of SLAM fused with proprioception is less than 6 meters after a traversed distance of 530 meters, whereas un-aided proprioception results in a horizontal error of 15 meters.

Accurate understanding of electromagnetic propagation properties in real environments is necessary for efficient design and deployment of cellular systems. In this paper, we show a method to estimate high-resolution channel parameters with a massive antenna array in real network deployments. An antenna array mounted on a vehicle is used to receive downlink long-term evolution (LTE) reference signals from neighboring base stations (BS) with mutual interference. Delay and angular information of multipath components is estimated with a novel inter-cell interference cancellation algorithm and an extension of the RIMAX algorithm. The estimated high-resolution channel parameters are consistent with the movement pattern of the vehicle and the geometry of the environment and allow for refined channel modeling and precise cellular positioning.

One of the use cases for 5G systems and beyond is ultra-reliability low-latency communication (URLLC). An enabling technology for URLLC is massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), which can increase reliability due to improved user separation, array gain and the channel hardening effect. Measurements have been performed in an operating factory environment at 3.7 GHz with a co-located massive MIMO array and a unique randomly distributed array. Channel hardening can appear when the number of antennas is increased such that the variations of channel gain (small-scale fading) is decreased and it is here quantified. The cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the channel gains then becomes steeper and its tail is reduced. This CDF is modeled and the required fading margins are quantified. By deploying a distributed array, the large-scale power variations can also be reduced, further improving reliability. The large array in this rich scattering environment, creates a more reliable channel as it approaches an independent identically distributed (i.i.d.) complex Gaussian channel, indicating that one can rethink the system design in terms of e.g. channel coding and re-transmission strategies, in order to reduce latency. Accurate characterization of large-scale antenna arrays is growing in importance and complexity for the fifth-generation (5G) and beyond systems, as they feature more antenna elements and require increased overall performance. The full 3D patterns of all antenna elements in the array need to be characterized because they are in general different due to construction inaccuracy, coupling, antenna array's asymmetry, etc. The effective aperture distribution function (EADF) can provide an analytic description of an antenna array based on a full-sphere measurement of the array in an anechoic chamber. However, as the array aperture increases, denser spatial samples are needed for EADF due to large distance offsets of array elements from the reference point in the anechoic chamber, leading to a prohibitive measurement time and increased complexity of EADF. In this paper, we present the EADF applied to large-scale arrays and highlight issues caused by the large array aperture. To overcome the issues, an enhanced EADF is proposed with a low complexity that is intrinsically determined by the characteristic of each array element rather than the array aperture. This article aims at providing insights for a comprehensive understanding of terahertz (THz) propagation channels. Specifically, we discuss essential THz channel characteristics to be well understood for the success of THz communications. The methodology of establishing realistic and 6G-compliant THz channel models based on measurements is then elaborated on, followed by a discussion on existing THz channel measurements in the literature. The commercial availability of low-cost millimeter wave (mmWave) communication and radar devices is starting to improve the penetration of such technologies in consumer markets, paving the way for large-scale and dense deployments in fifth-generation (5G)-and-beyond as well as 6G networks. At the same time, pervasive mmWave access will enable device localization and device-free sensing with unprecedented accuracy, especially with respect to sub-6 GHz commercial-grade devices. This paper surveys the state of the art in device-based localization and device-free sensing using mmWave communication and radar devices, with a focus on indoor deployments. We first overview key concepts about mmWave signal propagation and system design. Then, we provide a detailed account of approaches and algorithms for localization and sensing enabled by mmWaves. We consider several dimensions in our analysis, including the main objectives, techniques, and performance of each work, whether each research reached some degree of implementation, and which hardware platforms were used for this purpose. Modern wireless communication systems operating at high carrier frequencies are characterized by a high dimensionality of the underlying parameter space (including channel gains, angles, delays, and possibly Doppler shifts). Estimating these parameters is valuable for communication purposes, but also for localization and sensing, making channel estimation a critical component in any joint communication and localization or sensing application. The high dimensionality make it difficult to use search-based methods such as maximum likelihood. Search-free methods such as ESPRIT provide an attractive alternative, but require a complex decomposition step in both the tensor and matrix version of ESPRIT. To mitigate this, we propose, develop, and analyze a reduced complexity beamspace ESPRIT method. Complexity is reduced both by beampace processing as well as low-complex implementation of the singular value decomposition. A novel perturbation analysis provides important insights for both channel estimation and localization performance. The proposed method is compared to the tensor ESPRIT method, in terms of channel estimation, communication, localization, and sensing performance, further validating the perturbation analysis., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

Millimeter-wave cellular communication requires beamforming procedures that enable alignment of the transmitter and receiver beams as the user equipment (UE) moves. For efficient beam tracking it is advantageous to classify users according to their traffic and mobility patterns. Research to date has demonstrated efficient ways of machine learning based UE classification. Although different machine learning approaches have shown success, most of them are based on physical layer attributes of the received signal. This, however, imposes additional complexity and requires access to those lower layer signals. This paper proposes a belief propagation (BP)-based algorithm for sequential detection and estimation of multipath component (MPC) parameters based on radio signals. Under dynamic channel conditions with moving transmitter/receiver, the number of MPCs, the MPC dispersion parameters, and the number of false alarm contributions are unknown and time-varying. We develop a Bayesian model for sequential detection and estimation of MPC dispersion parameters, and represent it by a factor graph enabling the use of BP for efficient computation of the marginal posterior distributions. At each time step, a snapshot-based parametric channel estimator provides parameter estimates of a set of MPCs which are used as noisy measurements by the proposed BP-based algorithm. It performs joint probabilistic data association, and estimation of the time-varying MPC parameters and the mean number of false alarm measurements, by means of the sum-product algorithm rules. The algorithm also exploits amplitude information enabling the reliable detection of "weak" MPCs with very low component signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). The performance of the proposed algorithm compares well to state-of-the-art algorithms for high SNR MPCs, but it significantly outperforms them for medium or low SNR MPCs. This paper presents LuMaMi28, a real-time 28 GHz massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) testbed. In this testbed, the base station has 16 transceiver chains with a fully-digital beamforming architecture (with different pre-coding algorithms) and simultaneously supports multiple user equipments (UEs) with spatial multiplexing. The UEs are equipped with a beam-switchable antenna array for real-time antenna selection where the one with the highest channel magnitude, out of four pre-defined beams, is selected. For the beam-switchable antenna array, we consider two kinds of UE antennas, with different beam-width and different peak-gain. Based on this testbed, we provide measurement results for millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive MIMO performance in different real-life scenarios with static and mobile UEs. Wireless-based activity sensing has gained significant attention due to its wide range of applications. We investigate radio-based multi-class classification of human activities using massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel measurements in line-of-sight and non line-of-sight scenarios. We propose a tensor decomposition-based algorithm to extract features by exploiting the complex correlation characteristics across time, frequency, and space from channel tensors formed from the measurements, followed by a neural network that learns the relationship between the input features and output target labels. Through evaluations of real measurement data, it is demonstrated that the classification accuracy using a massive MIMO array achieves significantly better results compared to the state-of-the-art even for a smaller experimental data set., Comment: accepted for publication in IEEE Wireless Communications Letters

Cellular-connected unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has attracted a surge of research interest in both academia and industry. To support aerial user equipment (UEs) in the existing cellular networks, one promising approach is to assign a portion of the system bandwidth exclusively to the UAV-UEs. This is especially favorable for use cases where a large number of UAV-UEs are exploited, e.g., for package delivery close to a warehouse. Although the nearly line-of-sight (LoS) channels can result in higher powers received, UAVs can in turn cause severe interference to each other in the same frequency band. In this contribution, we focus on the uplink communications of massive cellular-connected UAVs. Different power allocation algorithms are proposed to either maximize the minimal spectrum efficiency (SE) or maximize the overall SE to cope with severe interference based on the successive convex approximation (SCA) principle. One of the challenges is that a UAV can affect a large area meaning that many more UAV-UEs must be considered in the optimization problem, which is essentially different from that for terrestrial UEs. The necessity of single-carrier uplink transmission further complicates the problem. Nevertheless, we find that the special property of large coherent bandwidths and coherent times of the propagation channels can be leveraged. The performances of the proposed algorithms are evaluated via extensive simulations in the full-buffer transmission mode and bursty-traffic mode. Results show that the proposed algorithms can effectively enhance the uplink SEs. Due to the increase of Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices, IoT networks are getting overcrowded. Networks can be extended with more gateways, increasing the number of supported devices. However, as investigated in this work, massive MIMO has the potential to increase the number of simultaneous connections, while also lowering the energy expenditure of these devices. We present a study of the channel characteristics of massive MIMO in the unlicensed sub-GHz band. The goal is to support IoT applications with strict requirements in terms of number of devices, power consumption, and reliability. The assessment is based on experimental measurements using both a uniform linear and a rectangular array. Our study demonstrates and validates the advantages of deploying massive MIMO gateways to serve IoT nodes. While the results are general, here we specifically focus on static nodes. The array gain and channel hardening effect yield opportunities to lower the transmit-power of IoT nodes while also increasing reliability. The exploration confirms that exploiting large arrays brings great opportunities to connect a massive number of IoT devices by separating the nodes in the spatial domain. In addition, we give an outlook on how static IoT nodes could be scheduled based on partial channel state information.

A pre-requisite for the design of wireless systems is the understanding of the propagation channel. While a wealth of propagation knowledge exists for bands below 6 GHz, the same can not be said for bands approaching millimeter-wave frequencies. In this paper, we present the design, implementation and measurement-based verification of a re-configurable 27.5-29.5 GHz channel sounder for measuring dynamic directional channels. Based on the switched array principle, our design is capable of characterizing 128$\times$256 dual-polarized channels with snapshot times of around 600 ms. This is in sharp contrast to measurement times on the order of tens-of-minutes with rotating horn antenna sounders. Our design lends itself to high angular resolution at both link ends with calibrated antenna arrays sampled at 2$^\circ$ and 5$^\circ$ intervals in the azimuth and elevation domains. This is complemented with a bandwidth of up to 2 GHz, enabling nanosecond-level delay resolution. The short measurement times and stable radio frequency design facilitates real-time processing and averaging of the received wavefronts to gain measurement signal-to-noise ratio and dynamic range. Classification between different activities in an indoor environment using wireless signals is an emerging technology for various applications, including intrusion detection, patient care, and smart home. Researchers have shown different methods to classify activities and their potential benefits by utilizing WiFi signals. In this paper, we analyze classification of moving objects by employing machine learning on real data from a massive multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) system in an indoor environment. We conduct measurements for different activities in both line-of-sight and non line-of-sight scenarios with a massive MIMO testbed operating at 3.7 GHz. We propose algorithms to exploit amplitude and phase-based features classification task. For the considered setup, we benchmark the classification performance and show that we can achieve up to 98% accuracy using real massive MIMO data, even with a small number of experiments. Low-Power Wide-Area Networks operating in the unlicensed bands are being deployed to connect a rapidly growing number of Internet-of-Things devices. While the unlicensed sub-GHz band offers favorable propagation for long-range connections, measurements show that the energy consumption of the nodes is still mostly dominated by the wireless transmission affecting their autonomy. We investigate the potential benefits of deploying massive MIMO technology to increase system reliability and at the same time support low-energy devices with good coverage at sub-GHz frequencies. The impact of different antenna configurations and propagation conditions is analyzed. Both actual average experienced array gain and channel hardening are examined. The assessment demonstrates the effect of channel hardening as well as the potential benefits of the experienced array gain. These measurements serve as a first assessment of the channel conditions of massive MIMO at sub-GHz frequencies and are, to the best of our knowledge, the first of its kind.

Massive multiple-input multiple-out (MIMO) technology is vital in millimeter-wave (mmWave) bands to obtain large array gains. However, there are practical challenges, such as high hardware cost and power consumption in such systems. A promising solution to these problems is to adopt a hybrid beamforming architecture. This architecture has a much lower number of transceiver (TRx) chains than the total antenna number, resulting in cost- and energy-efficient systems. In this paper, we present a real-time mmWave (28 GHz) massive MIMO testbed with hybrid beamforming. This testbed has a 64-antenna/16-TRx unit for beam-selection, which can be expanded to larger array sizes in a modular way. Millimeter-Wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) has been considered as a key enabler for the fifth-generation (5G) communications. It is essential to design and test mmWave 5G devices under various realistic scenarios, since the radio propagation channels pose intrinsic limitations on the performance. This requires emulating realistic dynamic mmWave channels in a reproducible manner in laboratories, which is the goal of this paper. In this contribution, we firstly illustrate the dominant-cluster(s) concept, where the non-dominant clusters in the mmWave channels are pruned, for mmWave 5G devices applying massive MIMO beamforming. This demonstrates the importance and necessity to accurately emulate the mmWave channels at a cluster level rather than the composite-channel level. Thus, an over-the-air (OTA) emulation strategy for dynamic mmWave channels is proposed based on the concept of dominant-cluster(s) in a sectored multiprobe anechoic chamber (SMPAC). The key design parameters including the probe number and the angular spacing of probes are investigated through comprehensive simulations. A cost-effective switchcircuit is also designed for this purpose and validated in the simulation. Mobile communications have been undergoing a generational change every ten years or so. However, the time difference between the so-called "G's" is also decreasing. While fifth-generation (5G) systems are becoming a commercial reality, there is already significant interest in systems beyond 5G, which we refer to as the sixth-generation (6G) of wireless systems. In contrast to the already published papers on the topic, we take a top-down approach to 6G. We present a holistic discussion of 6G systems beginning with lifestyle and societal changes driving the need for next generation networks. This is followed by a discussion into the technical requirements needed to enable 6G applications, based on which we dissect key challenges, as well as possibilities for practically realizable system solutions across all layers of the Open Systems Interconnection stack. Since many of the 6G applications will need access to an order-of-magnitude more spectrum, utilization of frequencies between 100 GHz and 1 THz becomes of paramount importance. As such, the 6G eco-system will feature a diverse range of frequency bands, ranging from below 6 GHz up to 1 THz. We comprehensively characterize the limitations that must be overcome to realize working systems in these bands; and provide a unique perspective on the physical, as well as higher layer challenges relating to the design of next generation core networks, new modulation and coding methods, novel multiple access techniques, antenna arrays, wave propagation, radio-frequency transceiver design, as well as real-time signal processing. We rigorously discuss the fundamental changes required in the core networks of the future that serves as a major source of latency for time-sensitive applications. Propagation models constitute a fundamental building block of wireless communications research. Before we build and operate real systems, we must understand the science of radio propagation, and develop channel models that both reflect the important propagation processes and allow a fair comparison of different systems. In the past five decades, wireless systems have gone through five generations, from supporting voice applications to enhanced mobile broadband. To meet the ever increasing data rate demands of wireless systems, frequency bands covering a wide range from 800 MHz to 100 GHz have been allocated for use. The standardization of these systems started in the early/mid 1980's in Europe by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute with the advent of Global System for Mobile Communications. This motivated the development of the first standardized propagation model by the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) 207 working group. These standardization activities were continued and expanded for the third, fourth, and fifth generations of COST, as well as by the Third Generation Partnership Project, and the International Telecommunication Union. This paper presents a historical overview of the standardized propagation models covering first to fifth-generation systems. In particular, we discuss the evolution and standardization of pathloss models, as well as large and small-scale fading parameters for single antenna and multiple antenna systems. Furthermore, we present insights into the progress of deterministic modelling across the five generations of systems, as well as discuss more advanced modelling components needed for the detailed simulations of millimeter-wave channels. Reliability is becoming increasingly important for many applications envisioned for future wireless systems. A technology that could improve reliability in these systems is massive MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output). One reason for this is a phenomenon called channel hardening, which means that as the number of antennas in the system increases, the variations of channel gain decrease in both the time- and frequency domain. Our analysis of channel hardening is based on a joint comparison of theory, measurements and simulations. Data from measurement campaigns including both indoor and outdoor scenarios, as well as cylindrical and planar base station arrays, are analyzed. The simulation analysis includes a comparison with the COST 2100 channel model with its massive MIMO extension. The conclusion is that the COST 2100 model is well suited to represent real scenarios, and provides a reasonable match to actual measurements up to the uncertainty of antenna patterns and user interaction. Also, the channel hardening effect in practical massive MIMO channels is less pronounced than in complex independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) With the potential to provide a clean break from massive multiple-input multiple-output, large intelligent surfaces (LISs) have recently received a thrust of research interest. Various proposals have been made in the literature to define the exact functionality of LISs, ranging from fully active to largely passive solutions. Nevertheless, almost all studies in the literature investigate the fundamental spectral efficiency performance of these architectures. In stark contrast, this paper investigates the implementation aspects of LISs. Using the fully active LIS as the basis of our exposition, we first present a rigorous discussion on the relative merits and disadvantages of possible implementation architectures from a radio-frequency circuits and real-time processing viewpoints. We then show that a distributed architecture based on a common module interfacing a smaller number of antennas can be scalable. To avoid severe losses with analog signal distribution, multiple common modules can be interconnected via a digital nearest-neighbor network. Furthermore, we show that with such a design, the maximum backplane throughput scales with the number of served user terminals, instead of the number of antennas across the surface. The premise of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is based around coherent transmission and detection. Majority of the vast literature on massive MIMO presents performance evaluations over simplified statistical propagation models. All such models are drop-based and do not ensure continuity of channel parameters. In this paper, we quantify the impact of spatially consistent (SC) models on beamforming for massive MIMO systems. We focus on the downlink of a 28GHz multiuser urban microcellular scenario. Using the recently standardized Third Generation Partnership Project 38.901 SC-I procedure, we evaluate the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio of a user equipment and the system ergodic sum spectral efficiency with zero-forcing, block diagonalization, and signal-to-leakage-plus-noise ratio beamforming. Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) promises significantly higher performance relative to conventional multiuser systems. However, the promised gains of massive MIMO systems rely heavily on the accuracy of the absolute front-end calibration, as well as quality of channel estimates at the base station (BS). In this paper, we analyze user equipment-aided calibration mechanism to estimate the amplitude scaling and phase drift at each radio-frequency chain interfacing with the BS array. Assuming a uniform linear array at the BS and Ricean fading, we obtain the estimation parameters with moment-based (amplitude, phase) and maximum-likelihood (phase-only) estimation techniques. In stark contrast to previous works, we mathematically articulate the equivalence of the two approaches for phase estimation. Furthermore, we rigorously derive a Cramer-Rao lower bound to characterize the accuracy of the two estimators. Fifth-generation (5G) new radio (NR) deployments are being rolled out in both the C-band (3.3 - 5.0 GHz) and millimeter-wave (mmWave) band (24.5 - 29.5 GHz). For outdoor scenarios, the C-band is expected to provide wide area coverage and throughput uniformity, whereas the mmWave band is expected to provide ultra-high throughput to dedicated areas within the C-band coverage. Due to the differences in the frequency bands, both systems are expected to be designed with different transmit and receive parameters, naturally resulting in performance variations proportional to the chosen parameters. Unlike many previous works, this paper presents measurement evaluations in central Auckland, New Zealand, from a pre-commercial deployment of a single-user, single-cell 5G-NR system operating in both bands. The net throughput, coverage reliability, and channel rank are analyzed across the two bands with baseband and analog beamforming. Our results show that the C-band coverage is considerably better than mmWave, with a consistently higher channel rank. Furthermore, the spatial stationarity region (SSR) for the azimuth angles-of-departure (AODs) is characterized, and a model derived from the measured beam identities is presented. We present a new type of wireless access infras-tructure consisting of a fabric of dispersed electronic circuitsand antennas that collectively function as a massive, distributed antenna array. We have chosen to name this new wireless infrastructure 'RadioWeaves' and anticipate they can be integrated into indoor and outdoor walls, furniture, and otherobjects, rendering them a natural part of the environment. Technologically, RadioWeaves will deploy distributed arrays to create both favorable propagation and antenna array interaction. The technology leverages on the ideas of large-scale intelligent surfaces and cell-free wireless access. Offering close to the service connectivity and computing, new grades in energy efficiency,reliability, and low latency can be reached. The new concept moreover can be scaled up easily to offer a very high capacity inspecific areas demanding so. In this paper we anticipate how two different demanding use cases can be served well by a dedicated RadioWeaves deployment: a crowd scenario and a highly reflective factory environment. A practical approach towards a RadioWeaves prototype, integrating dispersed electronics invisibly in a room environment, is introduced. To enable realistic studies of massive multiple-input multiple-output systems, the COST 2100 channel model is extended based on measurements. First, the concept of a base station-side visibility region (BS-VR) is proposed to model the appearance and disappearance of clusters when using a physically-large array. We find that BS-VR lifetimes are exponentially distributed, and that the number of BS-VRs is Poisson distributed with intensity proportional to the sum of the array length and the mean lifetime. Simulations suggest that under certain conditions longer lifetimes can help decorrelating closely-located users. Second, the concept of a multipath component visibility region (MPC-VR) is proposed to model birth-death processes of individual MPCs at the mobile station side. We find that both MPC lifetimes and MPC-VR radii are lognormally distributed. Simulations suggest that unless MPC-VRs are applied the channel condition number is overestimated. Efficient mitigation of power amplifier (PA) nonlinear distortion in multi-user hybrid precoding based broadband mmWave systems is an open research problem. In this article, we first carry out detailed signal and distortion modeling in broadband multi-user hybrid MIMO systems, with a bank of nonlinear PAs in each subarray, while also take the inevitable crosstalk between the antenna/PA branches into account. Building on the derived models, we then propose an efficient closed-loop (CL) digital predistortion (DPD) solution that requires only a single-input DPD unit per transmit chain or subarray, despite crosstalk, providing substantial complexity-benefit compared to the state-of-the art multi-dimensional DPD solutions. We show that under spatially correlated multipath propagation, each DPD unit can provide linearization towards every intended user, or more generally, towards all spatial directions where coherent propagation is taking place, and that the proposed CL DPD system is robust against crosstalk}. Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is expected to be a vital component in future 5G systems. As such, there is a need for new modeling in order to investigate the performance of massive MIMO not only at the physical layer, but also higher up the networking stack. In this paper, we present general optimization models for massive MIMO, based on mixed-integer programming and compatible sets, with both maximum ratio combing and zero forcing precoding schemes. We then apply our models to the case of joint device scheduling and power control for heterogeneous devices and traffic demands, in contrast to existing power control schemes that consider only homogeneous users and saturated scenarios. Our results show substantial benefits in terms of energy usage can be achieved without sacrificing throughput, and that both signalling overhead and the complexity of end devices can be reduced by abrogating the need for uplink power control through efficient scheduling.
