The film, 216 Westbound, (2014), by artist Shona Illingworth made in collaboration with media sociologist John Tulloch, explores how the effects of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) experienced by John, a survivor of 7/7 London bombings, can amplify another, less visible but powerful effect of the attacks: the mapping of a topography of latent threat and fear onto space. The explosion caused dramatic shifts in John’s sensory perception of time and space, his body embedded with fragments of glass, his eardrums ruptured, he is unable to look up at the sky. The assault on his body and sense of self was further exacerbated through the subsequent global media dissemination of an image of his injured body, which was used to promote the 90 days without charge anti-terror bill, a move that he strenuously opposed. Through close analysis of 216 Westbound, Shona Illingworth, John Tulloch and writer Caterina Albano examine the effect of the terrorist attack at the level of embodied experience, media reporting and the machinery of State control. Working across text, images and extracts from the film, and moving from trauma trapped inside the body through the loss of agency and appropriation of voice to the institution of State powers of constraint, this chapter will explore the psychological, physiological and societal impact of the bombings and the intensification of a sense of threat, diminished personal space, and hyper-vigilance that results.

This paper explores the conference theme ‘bridging the gap’ between celebrity and intellectual culture through a parallel analysis of terrorism reportage across television genres. Drawing on the British television series Atheism, the documentary series I Survived and a selection of British and Dutch television news interviews we illustrate the varying ways in which public scholars negotiate the institutional constraints underpinning national and international approaches to terrorism reportage. The final section of this paper offers a personal and professional example of ‘bridging the gap’.

Earlier diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer's disease would greatly benefit from the identification of biomarkers at the prodromal stage. Using a prominent animal model of aspects of the disease, we here show using clinically relevant methodologies that very young, pre-pathological PDAPP mice, which overexpress mutant human amyloid precursor protein in the brain, exhibit two cryptic deficits that are normally undetected using standard methods of assessment. Despite learning a spatial memory task normally and displaying normal brain glucose uptake, they display faster forgetting after a long delay following performance to a criterion, together with a strong impairment of brain glucose uptake at the time of attempted memory retrieval. Preliminary observations suggest that these deficits, likely caused by an impairment in systems consolidation, could be rescued by immunotherapy with an anti-β-amyloid antibody. Our data suggest a biomarker strategy for the early detection of β-amyloid-related abnormalities.

Health research is crucial to understand a country's needs and to improve health outcomes. We conducted a scoping review and analysis of existing health data in Timor-Leste to identify the health research priorities of the country. Published and unpublished health research in Timor-Leste from 2001 to 2011 that reported objectives, methods and results were identified. Key findings were triangulated with data from national surveys and the Health Management Information System; 114 eligible articles were included in the analysis, the leading topics of which were communicable (malaria, tuberculosis, HIV and sexually transmitted diseases and dengue) and non-communicable (eye and mental health) diseases. There were 28 papers (25%) on safe motherhood, child health and nutrition, of which 20 (71%) were unpublished. The review of national indicators showed high infant, under-five and maternal mortality rates. Burden of disease is greatest in young children, with respiratory infections, febrile illnesses and diarrheal disease predominating. There is poor access to and utilization of health care. Childhood malnutrition is an important unresolved national health issue. There are several obstacles leading to under-utilization of health services. The following topics for future health research are suggested from the review: nutrition, safe motherhood, childhood illness (in particular identifying the causes and cause-specific burden of severe respiratory, febrile and diarrheal diseases) and access to and use of health services.

Introduction: Early Class III treatment with reverse-pull headgear generally results in maxillary skeletal protraction but is frequently also accompanied by unfavorable dentoalveolar effects. An alternative treatment with intermaxillary elastics from a temporary anchorage device might permit equivalent favorable skeletal changes without the unwanted dentoalveolar effects. Methods: Six consecutive patients (3 boys, 3 girls; ages, 10-13 years 3 months) with Class III occlusion and maxillary deficiency were treated by using intermaxillary elastics to titanium miniplates. Cone-beam computed tomography scans taken before and after treatment were used to create 3-dimensional volumetric models that were superimposed on nongrowing structures in the anterior cranial base to determine anatomic changes during treatment. Results: The effect of the intermaxillary elastic forces was throughout the nasomaxillary structures. All 6 patients showed improvements in the skeletal relationship, primarily through maxillary advancement with little effect on the dentoalveolar units or change in mandibular position. Conclusions: The use of intermaxillary forces applied to temporary anchorage devices appears to be a promising treatment method. (Am J Orthod Dentofacial Orthop 2010; 137: 274-84)

INTRODUCTION: Temporary skeletal anchorage is a relatively recent addition to orthodontic treatment. Surgical miniplates, modified with intraoral attachments, provide an alternative to miniscrews for skeletal anchorage. In this study, we wanted to determine patients' and providers' perceptions of miniplate use during orthodontic treatment. METHODS: Consecutive patients having miniplates placed as part of their treatment completed questionnaires about their experiences during surgery and orthodontic treatment. A total of 200 miniplates were placed for 97 patients. The 30 orthodontists treating these patients also completed questionnaires concerning miniplate success, handling complexity, and whether these devices simplified treatment. RESULTS: The success rate was 92.5%. The devices were well tolerated by the patients. After a year, 72% of the patients reported that they did not mind having the implant, and 82% said that the surgical experience was better than expected, with little or no pain. The most frequent problems were postsurgical swelling, lasting 5 days on average, and cheek irritation experienced initially by more than a third of the patients, but it lessened over time. The clinicians reported that these devices were easy to use and greatly simplified orthodontic treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Miniplates are well accepted by patients and providers and are a safe and effective adjunct for complex orthodontic treatments.

PURPOSE: Skeletal anchorage systems are increasingly used in orthodontics. This article describes the techniques of placement and removal of modified surgical miniplates used for temporary orthodontic anchorage and reports surgeons' perceptions of their use. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We enrolled 97 consecutive orthodontic patients having miniplates placed as an adjunct to treatment. A total of 200 miniplates were placed by 9 oral surgeons. Patients and surgeons completed questionnaires after placement and removal surgeries. RESULTS: Fifteen miniplates needed to be removed prematurely. Antibiotics and anti-inflammatories were generally prescribed after placement but not after removal surgery. Most surgeries were performed with the patient under local anesthesia. Placement surgery lasted on average between 15 and 30 minutes per plate and was considered by the surgeons to be very easy to moderately easy. The surgery to remove the miniplates was considered easier and took less time. The patients' chief complaint was swelling, lasting on average 5.3 +/- 2.8 days after placement and 4.5 +/- 2.6 days after removal. CONCLUSIONS: Although miniplate placement/removal surgery requires the elevation of a flap, this was considered an easy and relatively short surgical procedure that can typically be performed with the patient under local anesthesia without complications, and it may be considered a safe and effective adjunct for orthodontic treatment.

The new edition of 'The Television Genre Book' has been fully revised and updated to provide a comprehensive introduction to the the concept of genre within television and to key television genres. Individual thematic sections by leading international television scholars address drama, soap opera, comedy, children's television, news, documentary, reality television, animation and popular entertainment, including talk shows and quiz shows. The discussion is illustrated throughout with case studies of classic and contemporary programmes, ranging from 'Monty Python's Flying Circus' to 'Supernanny' and from 'Teletubbies' to 'Lost'.

INTRODUCTION: Our aim was to review the experimental literature to determine what is known about functional and morphological tissue reactions around orthodontically loaded temporary skeletal anchorage devices. METHODS: The PubMed electronic database and the reference citations in published articles were searched to the end of April 2006. The inclusion criteria were animal studies about orthodontically loaded skeletal anchorage consisting of metallic bone plates or screw implants of 2.2 mm diameter or less. Data on healing time, force application, stability, side effects, and osseointegration were collected by 2 independent readers. RESULTS: Eight articles met the selection criteria. The healing times ranged from 0 to 12 weeks, and the amount of force varied from 25 to 500 g. Implant stability was generally achieved without severe side effects. Direct bone-screw contact was reported to be 10% to 58%, and osseointegration increased with loading time. Nevertheless, no significant difference in bone-screw contact was found between loaded and unloaded screw implants, or between tension and pressure sides of loaded implants. CONCLUSIONS: This review highlights some positive experimental findings that apply in clinical practice. However, questions concerning optimal force systems, surgical techniques and placement, and healing times remain. Future research should be well controlled and based on standardized protocols to test specific hypotheses.

With a renewed interest in large-scale malaria interventions, knowledge about the possible long-term effects of such interventions on the nature of malaria transmission is essential. We document complex changes in malaria epidemiology over the last 40 years associated with changing malaria control activities in Karimui, an isolated area in Papua New Guinea. An initially equal distribution of Plasmodium falciparum, P. vivax and P. malariae changed to currently 68% P. falciparum, after passing through a phase of transitory P. vivax dominance, when control started to fail. Initial drops in malaria prevalence proved difficult to sustain and present post-control levels are significantly higher than pre-control levels. The example of Karimui indicates that unsustained control can lead to changes in malaria patterns that may leave a population worse off.

Are contemporary festivals an empty spectacle? George Steiner for one suggested in a 1996 address that closing down of the Edinburgh Festival would be ‘rare but vivid mark of honesty within excellence’. The contemporary world no longer had a need for festivals as symbols of ‘the credo of a community or the aspirations of a political regime,’ he argued.1 This critique of the festival as a ‘meaning-free zone’ seems to be linked with a kind of revulsion at the range of excesses often associated with the phenomenon of festival in the contemporary industrialized world, and the argument goes that these excesses tend to obscure and in fact diminish the ‘original purpose’ of festivals as we have understood it via various anthropological and sociological discourses.
