BACKGROUND: Determinants of culinary qualities of East African highland cooking bananas (EAHCB) are not well known. This constrains the inclusion of user‐preferred traits in breeding. The present study aimed to quantify key indicators of user‐preferred characteristics to enable selection of acceptable hybrids. RESULTS: Qualitative characteristics that drive preference were big bunches (15–34 kg), long straight/slightly curved fingers (12–23 cm), yellowness and soft texture. Descriptive sensory analysis of the intensity of colour and texture the 23 genotypes revealed that landraces Kibuzi, Mbwazirume, Nakitembe and Mpologoma had higher intensity of yellowness and lower intensity of hardness (softer) and a low score (≤ 1.0) of astringency taste. A preference test showed that they had higher acceptability scores. Biochemical, instrumental and sensory data revealed correlations between sensory firmness and instrumental hardness (r = 0.5), sensory firmness and amylopectin (r = −0.54), suggesting that qualitative descriptions can be predicted by instrumental and biochemical indicators. Significant (P < 0.05) variations in amylose and total starch content were observed in different varieties. Moderate correlations between instrumental hardness and firmness in mouth (r = 0.55), cohesiveness and firmness in the mouth (r = 0.57), and adhesiveness and firmness in the mouth (r = 0.64) were observed. Surprisingly, carotenoids content was not correlated with yellowness in cooked matooke. However, positive correlations were observed between chroma (b*) parameters of raw matooke and sensorial assessed color on cooked samples. CONCLUSION: Qualitative characteristis; the bunch, pulp colour and texture; that drive users‐preference in the EAHCB were quantified, paving way for breeders to use them to select genotypes with these attributes early in the breeding process. © 2023 The Authors. BACKGROUND: The relevance of several characteristics for the acceptability of steamed East Africa bananas (matooke) was assessed using consumer‐preferred characteristics, the overall liking scores, check‐all‐that‐apply (CATA) and the Just About Right scale. The study was conducted in rural and urban locations in three banana growing regions of Uganda. Two landraces and two hybrids were processed into matooke. Twelve trained panellists evaluated color, taste and texture sensory characteristics. RESULTS: Consumers scored matooke from landraces as the most liked. The CATA test showed that the most important characteristics were: smooth mouthfeel, soft to the touch, not sticky, moldable, deep yellow color, attractive, good matooke taste and smell. Principal component analysis confirmed that most of the preferred sensory characteristics were associated with the local genotypes, whereas the less preferred characteristics were associated with hybrids. Correlation analysis revealed strong positive correlations between the consumer assessed characteristics, hardness by touch, softness to touch and yellowness, as well as quantitative laboratory characteristics (moldable, hardness by touch, softness and yellowness) of the steamed matooke. Color assessed by consumers was strongly correlated with the laboratory‐assessed color indicators. CONCLUSION: The strong associations observed between laboratory‐assessed and consumer‐based characteristics (moldable by touch and yellowness) suggest the possibility of predicting consumer characteristics using quantitative laboratory sensory assessments. Matooke taste as assessed by consumer panel is strongly associated with smooth texture and deep yellow color, which were the characteristics associated with landraces in the laboratory sensory assessment. © 2023 The Authors. Most banana improvement programs are restricted to using a sub-set of edible landraces for sexual hybridization as the majority are female sterile. This results from an array of factors that work in tandem and lead to sterility. Use of pollen germination media (PGM) during pollination significantly increases seed set, but it is a very small fraction compared to the potential seed set. This research therefore explored early pollination (a day before anthesis), evening pollination, saline treatment, plant growth regulators (PGRs) treatment, and ovule culture as potential techniques for overcoming sterility in bananas. Early and evening pollinations did not increase seed set because of immature flowers and a mismatch of male and female flower opening, respectively (t-prob. = 0.735 and 0.884). Immersion of bunches in a saline solution before pollination and ovule culture also did not overcome pollination barriers. Auxin antagonists (TIBA and salicylic acid) increased seed set, though their respective increases were not statistically significant (t-prob. = 0.123 and 0.164, respectively). The use of auxin antagonists shows great potential for overcoming pollination barriers in bananas. However, application rates and time of application have to be optimized and used holistically with other promising techniques, such as use of PGM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this article is to provide information on pertinent propagation techniques for increased banana productivity. Banana, a very important crop in many tropical and subtropical countries of the world, is propagated with extreme difficulties. Its ordinary propagation technique of using suckers directly detached from a mother plant is limited by low multiplication rates and propensity of disseminating pests and diseases, which culminates in reduced banana productivity. Improved propagation techniques such as mother plant stripping, decapitation and mini-corms that increase the number of suckers are also somewhat deficient for large scale seed production and quality. Consequently, tissue and cell culture methods have been developed to address some of the challenges of seed quantity and quality although they are yet to be widely adopted. In this detailed review that includes results from hard-to-find literature, we discuss the traditional and modern methods of banana propagation, their benefits and limitations. Specifically, tissue culture stands out as the most prolific method of delivering high quantity and quality seed in banana. Its applicability, however, is limited by high costs of production and a need for skilled personnel and specialized equipment. It is imperative that to build a sustainable and viable banana seed production system, a multiplication scheme that combines two or more multiplication methods including tissue culture for cleaning the seed stock is utilized. The information provided gives premise for interventions to alleviate the problems of low banana seed availability, quantity and quality.

Banana (Musa spp.), an important staple food in the tropical and subtropical regions, is highly susceptible to drought. Developing drought-tolerant bananas using available germplasm offers a long-term solution to mitigate drought effects. The East and Central Africa Banana Germplasm Collection in Uganda contains genetically diverse genotypes whose potential for drought tolerance breeding is yet to be established. This study aimed to determine the response of 14 Musa spp. genotypes to drought stress using phenotypic and physiological traits in order to select promising genotypes for use in breeding. Two genotypes with a known reaction to water deficit conditions were included as local checks. Three-month-old tissue culture-derived plantlets were completely deprived of water for four weeks while control plants were regularly irrigated back to field capacity, and both sets maintained under screen-house conditions. Drought stress resulted in significant reductions in plant height, total leaf area, number of leaf cigars and functional leaves, total dry matter, chlorophyll and relative water content. Water use efficiency (WUE) of 12 genotypes increased under stress conditions. Stomatal conductance was affected by the genotype-porometer reading time interaction. Genotype "ITC.0987" was the most tolerant, considering that moisture stress had the least effect on its above-ground growth. Among the improved diploids, "TMB2x9722-1" had the least total dry matter reduction and highest WUE, while "TMB2x9172" showed the least decrease in relative water content and highest root-shoot ratio increase under stress. Thus, "ITC.0987", "TMB2x9722-1" and "TMB2x9172" are essential drought-tolerant candidates that may be utilized in breeding. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tea (Camellia sinensis L.) is an important beverage consumed worldwide. In Uganda, it is the second-largest and highly prioritized export crop after coffee and provides the much-needed jobs to more than 800,000 people. Despite its importance in the country, the crop has received very limited research attention for its improvement and optimal utilization. This study was aimed at characterizing existing tea germplasm in Uganda to inform future breeding initiatives for market-preferred tea varieties. Fifty-eight advanced tea clones were randomly selected from the tea germplasm conserved at Uganda's Tea Research Center in Rwebitaba and analyzed in the laboratory for eight physicochemical descriptors. Hierarchical cluster analysis performed on the 58 clones using Cluster-R package revealed four main clusters, indicating the existence of variation for physicochemical parameters within tested germplasm. This variation can be exploited to select among and/or improve the studied germplasm genetically for quality. High fermentation rate, which is one of the key indicators for good-quality black teas, revealed 15 fast-fermenter tea clones. Clone "UTR12/12" was identified as the most rapid fermenter, fully fermenting within 30 min, which implies a good clone for black tea. The clone also had the highest polyphenol content (26.7%), higher than the high-quality clone "UTR6/8" (control). Other tea clones whose polyphenol content was within the range of the control black tea clone were: "UTR144/10" (20.9%) and 'UTR144/17, (20.66%). The identified promising black tea clones can be advanced to multi-location trials for further evaluation and selection for eventual variety release as commercial black-tea clones. Summary: 'Matooke' is a staple food made from Highland cooking bananas in the Great Lakes region of East Africa. Genetic improvement of these bananas for resistance to pests and diseases has been a priority breeding objective. However, there is insufficient information on fruit quality characteristics that different users prefer, resulting in sub‐optimal adoption of new varieties. This study identified matooke characteristics preferred by farmers and traders, using survey data from 123 farmers, 14 focus group discussions and 40 traders. Gender differences were considered. The main characteristics that were found to drive variety preferences were agronomic (big bunch, big fruits) and quality (soft texture, good taste, good aroma, yellow food). There were minimal geographical and gender differences for trait preferences. Quality characteristics need to be defined in terms of physical–chemical underpinnings so that breeding programmes can apply accurate high‐throughput systems, thereby improving adoption and impact of new banana varieties. Taro is a marginalized tuber food crop, with wide distribution in the tropics. This study was aimed at assessing the effects of plant spacing and planting depth on corm yield and yield-related traits in taro. Dasheen, a predominant taro cultivar in Uganda, was sourced from farmers’ fields and evaluated using a randomized complete block design for two seasons. Three plant spacings (0.30 × 0.30 m, 0.50 × 0.50 m, 0.75 × 0.75 m) and two planting depths (0.15 m and 0.30 m) were used. Plant spacing had a significant effect on plant height, corm girth, corm yield plant−1, shoot yield plant−1and corm yield hectare−1(ha−1). Planting depth had a significant effect on corm length and corm yield ha−1. The widest spacing (0.75 × 0.75) produced largest corm yield plant−1and shoot yield plant−1, whereas the narrowest spacing (0.30 × 0.30 m) produced largest shoot yield ha−1and corm yield ha−1. Planting depth of 0.30 m produced higher corm yield and length than that of 0.15 m. Plant spacing was positively and significantly correlated with plant height, corm girth, and shoot yield plant−1but negatively correlated with corm yield ha−1and shoot yield ha−1. Planting depth was positively and significantly correlated with corm length, indicating that deeper planting of taro produced longer corms, thus enhancing corm yield. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Fusarium wilt of bananas (Musa spp.), caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Foc) causes up to 100% yield loss in bananas. Foc race 1 in particular is very devastating to dessert bananas in Uganda. One of the effective control strategies for the disease is the development of resistant cultivars through breeding. The objectives of this study were to identify suitable banana germplasm for generating a segregating population for resistance to Foc race 1 and understand the mode of inheritance of resistance to Foc race 1. Twenty-two banana accessions sourced from the National Agricultural Research Organisation in Uganda were challenged with Foc race 1 in a screen house experiment. Monyet, resistant to Foc race 1 and Kokopo, susceptible, were selected and crossed to generate 142 F1 genotypes. These F1 genotypes were also challenged with Foc race 1 in a screen house experiment. Data were collected on rhizome discoloration index (RDI), leaf symptom index (LSI) and pseudo-stem splitting (PSS), and analysed for variability. The banana accessions evaluated showed varying degrees of resistance to Foc race 1. Segregation ratios for resistant versus susceptible progenies fitted 13:3 (χ2 = 0.12, P = 0.73) for RDI and 11:5 (χ2 = 3.04, P = 0.08) for PSS. Estimated broad sense heritability was 27.8% for RDI, 13.9% for LSI and 14.7% for PSS. The results suggest that resistance to Foc race 1 in banana is controlled by at least two dominant genes with epistatic interaction and that heritability of resistance to Foc race 1 is low in Musa spp. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
