Climate change is rapidly modifying biodiversity across the Arctic, driving a shift from Arctic to more boreal ecosystem characteristics. This phenomenon, known as borealization, is mainly described for certain functional groups along sub-Arctic inflow shelves (Barents and Chukchi Seas). In this review, we evaluate the spatial extent of such alterations across the Arctic, as well as their effects on ecosystem-level processes and risks. Along the inflow shelves, borealization is driven by long-term strengthened inflow of increasingly warm waters from the south and punctuated by advection and low sea ice extreme events. A growing body of literature also points to an emerging borealization of the other Arctic shelf ecosystems, through a "spillover" effect, as local changes in environmental conditions enable movement or transport of new species from inflow shelves. These modifications are leading to changes across functional groups, although many uncertainties remain regarding under-sampled groups, such as microbes, and technical challenges of consistent, regular monitoring across regions. There is also clear consensus that borealization is affecting phenology, species composition, community traits, population structure and essential habitats, species interactions, and ecosystem resilience. Non-dynamic environmental factors, such as depth and photoperiod, are thought to limit the complete borealization of the system, and may lead to intermediate, "hybrid" ecosystems in the future. We expect current borders of Arctic and boreal ecosystems to progress further northward and ultimately reach an equilibrium state with seasonal borealization. Risks to the system are difficult to estimate, as adaptive capacities of species are poorly understood. However, ice-associated species are clearly most at risk, although some might find temporary refuge in areas with a slower rate of change. We discuss the likely character of future Arctic ecosystems and highlight the uncertainties. Those changes have implications for local communities and the potential to support Blue Growth in the Arctic. The circumpolar Taiga–Tundra Ecotone significantly influences the feedback mechanism of global climate change. Achieving large-scale individual tree crown (ITC) extraction in the transition zone is crucial for estimating vegetation biomass in the transition zone and studying plants' response to climate change. This study employed aerial images and airborne LiDAR data covering several typical transitional zone regions in northern Finland to explore the ITC delineation method based on deep learning. First, this study developed an improved multi-scale ITC delineation method to enable the semi-automatic assembly of the ITC sample collection. This approach led to the creation of an individual tree dataset containing over 20,000 trees in the transitional zone. Then, this study explored the ITC delineation method using the Mask R-CNN model. The accuracies of the Mask R-CNN model were compared with two traditional ITC delineation methods: the improved multi-scale ITC delineation method and the local maxima clustering method based on point cloud distribution. For trees with a height greater than 1.3 m, the Mask R-CNN model achieved an overall recall rate ( A r ) of 96.60%. Compared to the two conventional ITC delineation methods, the A r of Mask R-CNN showed an increase of 1.99 and 5.52 points in percentage, respectively, indicating that the Mask R-CNN model can significantly improve the accuracy of ITC delineation. These results highlight the potential of Mask R-CNN in extracting low trees with relatively small crowns in transitional zones using high-resolution aerial imagery and low-density airborne point cloud data for the first time. Herbivores drive shifts in plant species composition by interacting with vegetation through defoliation, trampling and nutrient addition: urine and faeces. As herbivore effects on vegetation accumulate over time, they might spillover to other trophic levels, but how and when this happens is poorly understood. Since it is methodologically demanding to measure biodiversity across spatial gradients, an alternative approach is to assess it through biodiversity indices of vascular plants. We employed the Index of biodiversity relevance developed for Swedish flora which provides an estimated number of organisms associated with a plant species, allowing the quantification of trophic community size. Values from this index were coupled with vegetation data from a network of 96 fenced and paired grazed plots across Fennoscandia. We analysed the role herbivory has on plant richness and diversity, and on the number of organisms that interact with the vegetation according to the index values. We also explored how herbivores influence the competitive effects of tall shrubs on other plants since the dominance of a vegetation type links directly to biodiversity. Plant diversity had no clear response to grazing. Overall vegetation and the vegetation subgroups herbs and non‐fruit shrubs had higher biodiversity index values in fenced plots, indicating a higher number of plant–host interactions. Herb cover was negatively related to shrubs in both treatments but with a faster decline in the absence of herbivores. This study highlights the importance of maintaining herbivore populations in the Arctic to conserve the vegetation structure and biodiversity of the tundra. This method of coupling biodiversity indexes with vegetation data provides complementary information to the plant diversity, especially when methodological or time constraints prevent complete field inventories. Approximately 8100 km2 of Alaska are leased to the oil and gas industry for exploration and extraction. According to industry estimates, subsurface expansion from these leases could cover up to 130.2 km2 per pad. As industrial oil extraction activities increase across the thawing Alaskan permafrost, impacts on the permafrost environment will include rapid thaw, increased hydrological flux, and the release of climate warming greenhouse gases. Here, we use remote sensing and field observations to provide a first-order comparison of the direct impacts to the permafrost tundra from oil well pads, and the long-term consequences of a legacy oil pads on the warming North Slope of Alaska. Drought has extensive, far-reaching, and long-lasting asymmetric effects on vegetation growth worldwide in the context of global warming. However, to date, few scholars have attempted the systematic quantification of the temporal effects of drought on global vegetation across various vegetation types and diverse climate zones. Addressing this gap, we quantitatively investigated the effects of drought on global vegetation growth under various scenarios, considering lagged and cumulative effects as well as combined effects in the 1982–2018 period. Our investigation was based on long-term net primary productivity (NPP) and two multiple-timescale drought indices: the standardised precipitation index (SPI) and the standardised precipitation and evapotranspiration index (SPEI). Our main findings were the following: (1) SPI and SPEI exhibited lagged effects on 52.08% and 37.05% of global vegetation, leading to average time lags of 2.48 months and 1.76 months, respectively. The cumulative effects of SPI and SPEI were observed in 80.01% and 72.16% of global vegetated areas, respectively, being associated with relatively longer cumulative timescales of 5.60 months and 5.16 months, respectively. (2) Compared to the scenario excluding temporal effects, there were increases in the explanatory powers of SPI and SPEI for variations in vegetation NPP based on the lagged, cumulative, and combined effects of drought: SPI increased by 0.82%, 6.65%, and 6.92%, respectively, whereas SPEI increased by 0.67%, 5.73%, and 6.07%, respectively. The cumulative effects of drought on global vegetation NPP were stronger than the lagged effects in approximately two-thirds (64.95% and 63.52% for SPI and SPEI, respectively) of global vegetated areas. (3) The effects of drought on vegetation NPP varied according to climate zones and vegetation types. Interestingly, vegetation in arid zones was the most sensitive and resilient to drought, as indicated by its rapid response to drought and the longest cumulative timescales. The vegetation NPP in tropical and temperate zones exhibited a relatively stronger response to drought than that in cold and polar zones. The strongest correlation of vegetation NPP with drought occurred in shrubland areas, followed by grassland, cropland, forest, and tundra areas. Moreover, for each vegetation type, the correlations between vegetation NPP and drought differed significantly among most climate zones. (4) The vegetation NPP in warming-induced drought regions displayed a higher correlation to drought than that in non-warming-induced drought regions, with shorter lagged and longer cumulative timescales. Our findings highlight the heterogeneity of the lagged, cumulative, and combined effects of drought across various climate zones and vegetation types; this could enhance our understanding of the coupling relationship between drought and global vegetation. High‐latitude vegetation experience different temperatures than the ambient air temperature. While lacking a regional plant temperature product, we drove the dynamic ecosystem model, LPJ‐GUESS, with widely used ERA5‐land surface temperature (Tsurf, at radiative equilibrium) and air temperature to understand ecosystem process responses to these two temperatures. We show that tundra plants' growth is stimulated by warmer Tsurf in the summer, but in the boreal forests, colder Tsurf in the non‐summer months constrains leaf development and enzyme activity the following growing season. Tsurf drives higher productivity of tundra plant individuals but leads to less productive individuals in the boreal forest, although with compensatory changes (almost 68%) in vegetation structure. We demonstrate the importance of forcing temperature in simulating high‐latitude ecosystem processes and call for a community effort to measure plant temperatures across canopy heights and seasons to reduce uncertainties in estimating high‐latitude plant responses and feedback to climate. ABSTRACT Aim Location Taxon Methods Results Conclusions This study aims to describe the latitudinal pattern in plant functional groups' (PFGs') biomass and cover in Nunavik to test whether PFG attributes are better Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) predictors than climate.The study spans a 700‐km latitudinal gradient from the lichen woodland to prostrate shrub tundra vegetation zones across Nunavik, Canada.Our analysis focuses on the following PFGs: erect and prostrate shrubs, herbaceous plants, bryophytes, and lichens.Biomass and cover data of the different PFGs were sampled in 40 sites distributed across the latitudinal gradient. NDVI data were obtained through remote sensing, while climatic, permafrost depth, and surficial deposits were derived from various databases. The PFG models were built to explore relationships between average NDVI (2016–2020) at the sampling site and ecological attributes such as PFG biomass or cover but also other variables such as surficial deposits and permafrost depth. A second series of models, the climatic models, were built using only climatic variables such as seasonal temperature and precipitation.The most parsimonious PFG model was built with the biomass data of erect shrubs, herbaceous plants, bryophytes, and lichens and included surficial deposits and permafrost depth (R2 = 0.74). This biomass model performed better than the most parsimonious cover model (cover of erect shrubs and herbaceous, surficial deposits, permafrost depth; R2 = 0.63). However, the most parsimonious climatic model (fall temperature, annual, and winter precipitations) exhibited superior predictive power compared to the ecological ones (R2 = 0.87).PFG models built with PFGs aboveground biomass or cover are good predictors of NDVI of the plant formations sampled along the latitudinal gradient in Nunavik. Despite the intrinsic association between NDVI and vegetation attributes, our study emphasizes the importance of the regional climate in the control of primary productivity in Arctic and subarctic ecosystems. Population dynamics depend on trophic interactions that are affected by climate change. The rise in sea temperature is associated with the disappearance of sea ice in the Arctic. In the Arctic part of the Barents Sea, Atlantic cod, capelin and polar cod are three fish populations that interact and are confronted with climate-induced sea ice reductions. The first is a major predator in the system, while the last two are key species in Arctic and sub-Arctic ecosystems, respectively. There are still many unknowns regarding how predicted environmental change may influence the joint dynamics of these populations. Using time series from a 32 year long survey, we developed a state-space model that jointly modelled the dynamics of cod, capelin and polar cod. Using a hindcast scenario approach, we projected the effect of reduced sea ice on these populations. We show that the impact of sea ice reduction and concomitant sea temperature increase may lead to a decrease of polar cod abundance at the benefit of capelin but not of cod which may decrease, resulting in strong changes in the food web. Our analyses show that climate change in the Arcto-boreal system can generate different species assemblages and new trophic interactions, which is the knowledge needed for effective management measures. Thermo-erosion gullies (TEGs) are one of the most common forms of abrupt permafrost degradation. They generally form in ice-wedge polygonal networks where the interconnected troughs can channel runoff water. Although TEGs can form within a single thawing season, it takes them several decades to stabilize completely. While the inception of TEGs has been examined in several studies, the processes of their stabilization remain poorly documented, especially the cryostructures that form following permafrost aggradation in stabilizing TEGs. For this study, we investigated the impacts of two TEGs in the Canadian High Arctic (Bylot Island, NU, Canada) on ground ice content, cryostratigraphic patterns, and geomorphology to examine permafrost recovery following thermal erosion in ice-wedge polygonal tundra. We sampled 17 permafrost cores from two TEGs – one still active (since 1999) and one stabilized (> 100 years old) – to describe the surface conditions, interpret the cryostratigraphic patterns, and characterize the state of permafrost after TEG stabilization. Although the TEG caused discernable cryostratigraphic patterns in permafrost, ground ice content and thaw front depth in the TEGs were comparable to measurements made in undisturbed conditions. We also noted that, once stabilized, TEGs permanently (at the Anthropocene scale) alter landscape morphology and hydrological connectivity. We concluded that, although the formation of a TEG has profound effects in the short and medium term (years to decades) and leaves near-permanent geomorphological and hydrological scars in periglacial landscapes, in the long term (decades to centuries), High Arctic permafrost can recover and return to geocryological conditions similar to those pre-dating the initial disturbance. Drained lake basins (DLBs) are dominant features in lowland permafrost landscapes of the Arctic. Here, we present a novel approach describing and quantifying the succession progression of recently drained basins using a land cover unit retrieval scheme developed specifically for the Arctic tundra biome. The complementarity between land cover units and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) analyses is shown. Land cover units were linked to DLB ages (years passed since a drainage event occurred). The data were divided into bioclimate subzones, and the land cover units were grouped according to their characteristics, first related to vegetation and second to wetness gradients (dry, moist and wet). Regression analyses of NDVI values and fraction of each land cover unit group provided the justification for the utility of the units in our research. The regression results showed the highest correlation with NDVI values for the wetness group "Moist" and the vegetation group "Shrub Tundra" (R2=0.458 and R2=0.444). There was no correlation (R2=0.066) between NDVI and the fraction of the "Wet" group. The inconsistency in the association between those variables underlines the need to complement NDVI analyses with a scheme representing wetness, such as the use of land cover units to describe changes in wetland areas. Finally, our results showed different trajectories in the succession of land cover units in recently drained lake basins with respect to different bioclimate subzones. Remaining water in the basin after a lake drainage event was highest for the most southern subzone (median 6.28 %). The open water fraction dropped below 1 % for all subzones after 5 to 10 years since drainage. The results of this study contribute to an improved understanding of DLB land cover change in permafrost environments and to a better knowledge base of these unique and critically important landforms. The Yellow River Delta wetland is a habitat for wintering waterfowl, where mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) and tundra bean goose (Anser fabalis) are commonly observed. Although the intestinal flora plays a pivotal role in maintaining host health and promoting nutrient absorption, it remains unclear whether the same overwintering habitat and challenging feeding conditions specifically affect the composition and diversity of intestinal flora in both species. Here, high-throughput sequencing was used to compare the intestinal bacterial communities of mallard and tundra bean goose from the same region. There was no significant difference in alpha diversity and beta diversity between the two species. Firmicutes and Proteobacteria were the two predominant phyla, accounting for more than 50.00% of the total. They enhanced the nutrient absorption and metabolic efficiency during overwintering. Catellicoccus was the most dominant genus in the intestinal flora of tundra bean goose, accounting for 33.91%, whereas Clostridium sensu stricto 1 was the most dominant genus in mallard, accounting for 7.34%. This difference is considered to be related to the feeding habits of these two species. No significant differences in the structure and diversity of intestinal bacterial communities were observed between mallard and tundra bean goose, and the similarity of intestinal flora between them was high. This study deepens our understanding of the intestinal flora of two coexisting species with different dietary preferences in the Yellow River Delta. It also lays the foundation for waterfowl disease prevention in this area, carrying significant scientific and practical implications for biodiversity and ecosystem conservation. In recent years, the arctic tundra has been subject to more frequent stochastic biotic or extreme weather events (causing plant dieback) and warmer summer air temperatures. However, the combined effects of these perturbations on the tundra ecosystem remain uninvestigated. We experimentally simulated plant dieback by cutting vegetation and increased summer air temperatures (ca. +2°C) by using open‐top chambers (OTCs) in an arctic heath tundra, West Greenland. We quantified surface greenhouse gas fluxes, measured soil gross N transformation rates, and investigated all ecosystem compartments (plants, soils, microbial biomass) to utilize or retain nitrogen (N) upon application of stable N‐15 isotope tracer. Measurements from three growing seasons showed an immediate increase in surface CH4 and N2O uptake after the plant dieback. With time, surface N2O fluxes alternated between emission and uptake, and rates in both directions were occasionally affected, which was primarily driven by soil temperatures and soil moisture conditions. Four years after plant dieback, deciduous shrubs recovered their biomass but retained significantly lower amounts of 15N, suggesting the reduced capacity of deciduous shrubs to utilize and retain N. Among four plant functional groups, summer warming only increased the biomass of deciduous shrubs and their 15N retention, while following plant dieback deciduous shrubs showed no response to warming. This suggests that deciduous shrubs may not always benefit from climate warming over other functional groups when considering plant dieback events. Soil gross N mineralization (~ −50%) and nitrification rates (~ −70%) significantly decreased under both ambient and warmed conditions, while only under warmed conditions immobilization of NO3− significantly increased (~ +1900%). This explains that plant dieback enhanced N retention in microbial biomass and thus bulk soils under warmed conditions. Arctic freshwater ecosystems are on the "frontline" of climate change, but due to a lack of direct long‐term monitoring data, indirect approaches, such as algal‐based paleolimnology, must be used to reconstruct past limnological conditions. Our understanding of the responses of small‐ to mid‐sized Arctic lakes to climate warming has increased over the last ~30 years. However, until recently, little was known about even the basic limnological conditions of Canada's "Northern Great Lakes," such as Lake Hazen, Great Bear Lake, and Great Slave Lake. In this summary, we show that a continuum of algal changes, observable in the sedimentary archives of shallow ponds to very large Arctic lakes, signals the crossing of key aquatic thresholds linked to changing ice covers and thermal regimes, declining wind speeds, and other climate‐related variables. With recent accelerated warming, even the largest and most resilient Arctic waterbodies are now fundamentally different than they were just a few decades ago. Northwest North America has unique high elevation Picea–Abies forests and parkland classified in British Columbia as the Engelmann Spruce–Subalpine–fir (ESSF) Biogeoclimatic zone. These ecosystems occur on a topographically and climatically complex landscape, juxtaposed with diverse vegetation types including alpine tundra, inland rain forest, dry conifer forest, and grasslands. Spatio-temporal ecosystem disturbance is varied, driven by factors such as climate variation, wildfire, volcanic eruptions, and insect herbivory. A pollen and charcoal record derived from a lake sediment core from the ESSF reveals a unique late-glacial to modern vegetation history progressing from alpine steppe through dry open conifer forest to moist spruce–fir ecosystems, the latter arising only 4600 years ago, late by comparison to other ESSF sites in the region. Repeated disturbance in the mid Holocene by wildfire coupled with volcanic ash deposition and increased climatic variation resulted in recurring Pinus contorta-dominated seral forest stands before cooling and moistening in the late Holocene led to stable Picea–Abies forest. With rapid climate change, changing disturbance regimes, and timber harvest, the management of dry ESSF forests needs to consider that this forest-type could transform into parkland or open seral pine stands, with a high frequency disturbance regime. Space use by small mammals should mirror their immediate needs for food and predator shelters but can also be influenced by seasonal changes in biotic and abiotic factors. Lemmings are keystone species of the tundra food web, but information on their spatial distribution in relation to habitat heterogeneity is still scant, especially at a fine scale. In this study, we used spatially explicit capture–recapture methods to determine how topography, hydrology, vegetation, and soil characteristics influence the fine-scale spatial variations in summer density of brown lemmings (Lemmus trimucronatus). Lemmings were monitored throughout the summer in wet and mesic tundra habitats and in a predator exclusion grid, which was also located in mesic tundra. We found that in wet tundra, lemming densities were higher at sites with a rugged topography dominated by hummocks, but only during snow melt. In both mesic tundra sites, lemming densities were higher in sites with poor drainage and low aspect throughout the summer. We found no clear association between lemming densities and any tested vegetation or soil variables. Overall, hydrology and topography appear to play a dominant role in small-scale space use of brown lemmings with a secondary role for predator avoidance and food plant abundance. Ecosystems at high latitudes are changing rapidly in response to climate change. To understand changes in carbon fluxes across seasonal to multi‐decadal timescales, long‐term in situ measurements from eddy covariance networks are needed. However, there are large spatiotemporal gaps in the high‐latitude eddy covariance network. Here we used the relative extrapolation error index in machine learning‐based upscaled gross primary production as a measure of network representativeness and as the basis for a network optimization. We show that the relative extrapolation error index has steadily decreased from 2001 to 2020, suggesting diminishing upscaling errors. In experiments where we limit site activity by either setting a maximum duration or by ending measurements at a fixed time those errors increase significantly, in some cases setting the network status back more than a decade. Our experiments also show that with equal site activity across different theoretical network setups, a more spread out design with shorter‐term measurements functions better in terms of larger‐scale representativeness than a network with fewer long‐term towers. We developed a method to select optimized site additions for a network extension, which blends an objective modeling approach with expert knowledge. This method greatly outperforms an unguided network extension and can compensate for suboptimal human choices. For the Canadian Arctic we show several optimization scenarios and find that especially the Canadian high Arctic and north east tundra benefit greatly from addition sites. Overall, it is important to keep sites active and where possible make the extra investment to survey new strategic locations. Plain Language Summary: The Arctic is one of earth's regions most severely affected by climate change as ice sheets melt and permafrost thaws. This permafrost is rich in carbon which will be released in time. How fast and in which form this carbon is released is highly uncertain. Release as methane would, for example, cause greater global warming in the near future than if it were released as carbon dioxide. It is therefore important to properly measure this carbon release so society can properly prepare for its effects. But as the Arctic is remote and has extreme conditions, there are not so many measuring stations and they might not cover all essential regions. We investigate how well this network represents the Arctic, and where there might be gaps both in space and time. We find that it is essential to keep currently active sites running since if we were to stop measurements our ability to predict this carbon release would not only stagnate but rapidly decline. We developed a method to identify regions that are underrepresented and by incorporating expert knowledge and a new optimization algorithm we can find ideal locations to expand the monitoring network, to better prepare for the future. Large stocks of soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) in northern permafrost soils are vulnerable to remobilization under climate change. However, there are large uncertainties in present‐day greenhouse gas (GHG) budgets. We compare bottom‐up (data‐driven upscaling and process‐based models) and top‐down (atmospheric inversion models) budgets of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) as well as lateral fluxes of C and N across the region over 2000–2020. Bottom‐up approaches estimate higher land‐to‐atmosphere fluxes for all GHGs. Both bottom‐up and top‐down approaches show a sink of CO2 in natural ecosystems (bottom‐up: −29 (−709, 455), top‐down: −587 (−862, −312) Tg CO2‐C yr−1) and sources of CH4 (bottom‐up: 38 (22, 53), top‐down: 15 (11, 18) Tg CH4‐C yr−1) and N2O (bottom‐up: 0.7 (0.1, 1.3), top‐down: 0.09 (−0.19, 0.37) Tg N2O‐N yr−1). The combined global warming potential of all three gases (GWP‐100) cannot be distinguished from neutral. Over shorter timescales (GWP‐20), the region is a net GHG source because CH4 dominates the total forcing. The net CO2 sink in Boreal forests and wetlands is largely offset by fires and inland water CO2 emissions as well as CH4 emissions from wetlands and inland waters, with a smaller contribution from N2O emissions. Priorities for future research include the representation of inland waters in process‐based models and the compilation of process‐model ensembles for CH4 and N2O. Discrepancies between bottom‐up and top‐down methods call for analyses of how prior flux ensembles impact inversion budgets, more and well‐distributed in situ GHG measurements and improved resolution in upscaling techniques. With climate change, there is concern that thawing permafrost will release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, shifting the region from long‐term cooling of the global climate to a net warming effect. In this study, we used different techniques to assess the greenhouse gas budgets of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide for the time period 2000‒2020. We find that the region is a net sink of carbon dioxide, mainly in boreal forests and wetlands, while carbon dioxide is emitted from inland waters and fires affecting both forest and tundra. Lakes and wetlands are strong sources of methane, which contributes to warm the climate significantly, especially over shorter timescales. Nitrous oxide is emitted at low rates across the region, with a relatively limited impact on climate. The ISLAS2020 field campaign during February and March 2020 set out to obtain a unique dataset describing the Arctic water cycle using stable water isotope (SWI) observations. Our observation strategy focused on measuring evaporation, deposition, and precipitation, all of which are commonly sub-grid scale processes in numerical weather and climate models. Uncertain parameterizations for these processes can lead to compensating errors, which can go unnoticed; however, evaporation and precipitation can also be investigated with SWIs, as they are an integrated tracer for processes that atmospheric moisture has undergone. The campaign can be divided into two efforts: the primary field experiment in Ny-Ålesund focused on evaporation and deposition, and the larger precipitation collection network around the Nordic Seas. The primary field experiment lasted three weeks, from 23 February to 15 March 2020, with temperatures reaching below −30 °C. During these weeks, we obtained near-surface, high-resolution (approx. 20 cm) SWI profiles at two deployment sites. Using a newly developed profiling system, we measured SWI gradients in the lowermost 5 and 2 m over fjord water and snow-covered tundra, respectively. These profiles are complemented by fiber-optic distributed sensing (FODS) columns and nearby meteorological stations. The FODS columns supply continuous, high-resolution (2 cm or finer) temperature profiles above both locations, whereas the meteorological stations provide information on wind speed and direction. We also made a short deployment to the Zeppelin mountain observatory (472 m a.s.l) for measurements of the isotopic signal in the free-troposphere. Additionally, numerous water samples from the snowpack in and around Ny-Ålesund were taken, in addition to daily fjord water samples from Kongsfjorden. These samples provide the context for the surface conditions under which profiles were collected. Isotopic connections on the synoptic scale are achieved by linking Ny-Ålesund observations with precipitation sampling at locations across the European Arctic, namely Longyearbyen, Tromsø, Andenes, Ålesund, and Bergen. The resulting dataset provides comprehensive insight into the Arctic hydrological cycle and can facilitate the study of phase change processes and transport of water vapour into and out of the Svalbard region. The permafrost region contains a significant portion of the world's soil organic carbon, and its thawing, driven by accelerated Arctic warming, could lead to the substantial release of greenhouse gases, potentially disrupting the global climate system. Accurate predictions of carbon cycling in permafrost ecosystems hinge on the robust calibration of model parameters. However, manually calibrating numerous parameters in complex process-based models is labor-intensive and further complicated by equifinality – the presence of multiple parameter sets that can equally fit the observed data. Incorrect calibration can lead to unrealistic ecological predictions. In this study, we employed the Model Analysis and Decision Support (MADS) software package to automate and enhance the accuracy of parameter calibration for carbon dynamics within the coupled Dynamic Vegetation Model, Dynamic Organic Soil Model, and Terrestrial Ecosystem Model (DVM-DOS-TEM), a process-based ecosystem model designed for high-latitude regions. The calibration process involved adjusting rate-limiting parameters to accurately replicate observed carbon and nitrogen fluxes and stocks in both soil and vegetation. Gross primary production, net primary production, vegetation carbon, vegetation nitrogen, and soil carbon and nitrogen pools served as synthetic observations for a black spruce boreal forest ecosystem. To validate the efficiency of this new calibration method, we utilized model-generated synthetic observations. With rapid climate warming, some coastal high‐latitude ecosystems are experiencing more frequent tidal floods. Yet little is known about tundra plant‐community responses to flooding, and whether Arctic warming may modulate such responses. In a 2‐year, full‐factorial field experiment in coastal tundra wetlands of the Yukon‐Kuskokwim (Y‐K) Delta (western Alaska), we simulated periodic tidal flood events at two severities under both ambient and warmed summer conditions and measured above‐ground plant‐community responses. Low‐severity flooding represented overbank flooding 1 day per month, which is consistent with projections in the next 5 years. High‐severity flooding represented a more impactful flooding regime (three consecutive days per month) that is projected to occur in the next 10 years. Our warming treatment (+1°C) also represented a change projected in the next 10 years. Regardless of temperature, high‐severity flooding increased graminoid biomass by >45%, in turn increasing live plant‐community biomass by >18%. Low‐severity flooding had similar, though weaker, effects. Flooding had overall negative effects on both forb and shrub biomass, though shrub responses were weaker. Only during the second summer, warming increased graminoid biomass by 20% and tended to increase shrub biomass, regardless of flooding. Concurrently, warming enhanced standing‐dead graminoid biomass by 20%, while high‐severity flooding decreased it by 15%. Therefore, wet tundra that was both flooded and warmed had the greatest proportion of graminoids and total live biomass, but standing‐dead biomass comparable to that of unmanipulated wet tundra. Synthesis. While our manipulations simulated flooding and warming regimes expected in the wetlands of the Y‐K Delta over the same, near‐future (5‐to‐10 years) time frame, flooding had stronger effects than warming. What is striking is the rate at which graminoid increases occurred, becoming apparent after only two monthly flood events in the first experimental year. Flooding‐induced decreases in standing‐dead biomass suggests that the incorporation of dead plant material into the litter layer might be facilitated by tidal floods. These rapid increases in plant biomass and potentially biomass turnover, especially of graminoids, which are characterized by high‐quality litter, may have major implications for carbon and nutrient cycling of more frequently flooded coastal ecosystems in a warmer Arctic. Mean annual temperatures in the Arctic and subarctic have increased in recent decades, increasing the number of permafrost hazards. Retrogressive thaw slumps (RTSs), triggered by the thawing of ground ice in permafrost soil, have become more common in the Arctic. Many studies report an increase in RTS activity on a local or regional scale. In this study, the primary goals are to: (i) examine the spatial patterns of the RTS occurrences across the circumpolar permafrost region, (ii) assess the environmental factors associated with their occurrence and (iii) create the first susceptibility map for RTS occurrence across the Northern Hemisphere. Based on our results, we predicted high RTS susceptibility in the continuous permafrost regions above the 60th latitude, especially in northern Alaska, north‐western Canada, the Yamal Peninsula, eastern Russia and the Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau. The model indicated that air temperature and soil properties are the most critical environmental factors for the occurrence of RTSs on a circumpolar scale. Especially, the climatic conditions of thaw season were highlighted. This study provided new insights into the circumpolar susceptibility of ice‐rich permafrost soils to rapid permafrost‐related hazards like RTSs and the associated impacts on landscape evolution, infrastructure, hydrology and carbon fluxes that contribute to global warming. We employ a high‐resolution Köppen climate classification dataset to examine shifts in Tundra zones within the Alps and Asia. Our analysis shows substantial reductions in Tundra areas by the mid‐21st century under different Shared. Socioeconomic pathways (SSP1‐2.6, SSP3‐7.0, SSP5‐8.5). Tundra zones in the Alps and the Tibetan Plateau are crucial for their unique climates and role as water reservoirs. Characterized by short, mild summers and long, severe winters, these zones are vital for the glaciers and perennial snow. The projected climate instability may significantly reduce alpine snow cover by mid‐century with irreversible consequences. A 2°C temperature increase from the 1981–2010 baseline could eliminate the Tundra climate in the Alps and reduce it by over 70% in Asia. Simple Summary: This study is a first attempt to address the critical issue of effect of elevation on the distribution and body size of carabid beetles in the same region, including mountainous forests and the alpine tundra of the upper limit of vegetation in the north cold temperate zone. The richness, abundance and body size of carabid beetles linearly decrease with elevation increase. The larger carabid species C. canaliculatus and C. venustus become smaller to adapt to high-elevation tundra conditions. The vegetation type changes at high elevations is an important factor that leads to changes of carabid distribution and body size along the elevation gradient. These high-elevation species such as C. macleayi, N. pektusanica and P. jaechi should be given priority attention in the context of global climate change. The environment of mountain ecosystems can change greatly in short distances as elevation increases. The effects of elevation change on the distribution and body size of carabid beetles were investigated at elevations of 750–2600 m in the Changbaishan Nature Reserve (Northeast China). The richness and abundance of carabid species decreased significantly as elevation increased. However, the change trends are different in forests and tundra. In the broad-leaved Korean pine forest and coniferous forest at low elevations, carabid beetle species have high richness and abundance. The community composition of carabid beetles was significantly different at different elevations and among different vegetation types. Some species only occurred at specific elevations. There were fewer indicator species in high-elevation areas, but Carabus macleayi Dejean, Nebria pektusanica Horratovich and Pterostichus jaechi Kirschenhofer were mainly found in high-elevation areas. The average body size of species in the carabid beetle community was negatively correlated with elevation. The sizes of the larger Carabus canaliculatus Adams and Carabus venustus Morawitz were negatively correlated with elevation. Their body sizes decreased obviously in the tundra at elevations above 2000 m. Changes in vegetation types at high elevations affect the distribution and body sizes of beetles along the elevation gradient. Some large carabid species may be smaller at high elevations where a unique insect fauna has developed. The body size and distribution range of the carabid may be the factors that affect body size reduction at high elevation. Although some high-elevation species also occur in low-elevation areas, the protection of species diversity in high-elevation areas should be emphasized in the context of global climate change. Responses of Arctic lakes to climate change are complex and heterogeneous at regional to local scales, but there are few studies comparing multiple sites within the same landscape. We studied sediment cores recovered from seven lake sites located within the forest-tundra biome of northern Manitoba, Canada. We first used sediment core pollen from the seven sites to reconstruct July temperatures and total annual precipitation for the past 7500 years based on the modern analog technique. Lake responses and peatland expansion were analyzed based on changes in the concentration and quality of organic matter, biogenic silica (bSi), Sphagnum spores, and published peat core basal dates. Changes in sediment organic matter and bSi were concentrated prior to 4500 cal. Yr BP. From 7500 to 3100 cal. Yr BP, July temperatures rose by ~3°C, and total annual precipitation fell by 200 mm; there was little change in temperature or precipitation after 3100 cal. Yr BP. Sphagnum spore concentrations exceeded 0.5% at all of the sites at 7500 cal. Yr BP indicating the early presence of peatlands. Spores increased markedly after 4500 cal. Yr BP in agreement with timing of peat basal dates, but the magnitude and timing of changes varied widely among sites likely reflecting local differences in hydrology or topography. The use of hierarchical generalized additive models provided a unified regional pattern of Holocene climate for northern Manitoba, even though lake responses to climate and peatland expansion differed greatly. Boreal and Arctic regions have warmed up to four times quicker than the rest of the planet since the 1970s. As a result, boreal and tundra ecosystems are experiencing more frequent and higher intensity extreme weather events and disturbances, such as wildfires. Yet limitations in ground and satellite data across the Arctic and boreal regions have challenged efforts to track these disturbances at regional scales. In order to effectively monitor the progression and extent of wildfires in the Arctic-boreal zone, it is essential to determine whether burned area (BA) products are accurate representations of BA. Here, we use 12 different datasets together with MODIS active fire data to determine the total yearly BA and seasonal patterns of fires in Arctic-boreal North America and Russia for the years 2001–2020. We found relatively little variability between the datasets in North America, both in terms of total BA and seasonality, with an average BA of 2.55 ± 1.24 (standard deviation) Mha/year for our analysis period, the majority (ca. 41%) of which occurs in July. In contrast, in Russia, there are large disparities between the products—GFED5 produces over four times more BA than GFED4s in southern Siberia. These disparities occur due to the different methodologies used; dNBR (differenced Normalized Burn Ratio) of short-term composites from Landsat images used alongside hotspot data was the most consistently successful in representing BA. We stress caution using GABAM in these regions, especially for the years 2001–2013, as Landsat-7 ETM+ scan lines are mistaken as burnt patches, increasing errors of commission. On the other hand, we highlight using regional products where possible, such as ABoVE-FED or ABBA in North America, and the Talucci et al. fire perimeter product in Russia, due to their detection of smaller fires which are often missed by global products. Pymvashor Creek is the northernmost in continental Europe hydrothermal system (Bolshezemelskaya tundra, Northeast of European Russian Arctic). Our study aimed to investigate the taxonomic composition and abundance of chironomids and to evaluate the relationship of these parameters with the water temperature along the thermal gradient in the arctic Pymvashor Creek thermal system. The greatest taxonomic richness and abundance of chironomids were found in tepid waters (25 chironomid taxa), where Orthocladiinae dominated chironomid communities. Eurybiotic Chironomus Meigen, 1803 species dominated thermal springs. Cold stenotherm Pseudodiamesa (Pseudodiamesa) nivosa (Goetghebuer, 1928) and Eukiefferiella claripennis (Lundbeck, 1898) prevailed in cold karst springs. Arctic sea ice has undergone a significant decline in the Barents–Kara Sea (BKS) since the late 1990s. Previous studies have shown that the decrease in sea ice caused by increased poleward moisture transport is modulated by tropical sea temperature changes (mainly referring to La Niña events). The occurrence of multi-year La Niña (MYLA) events has increased significantly in recent decades, and their impact on Arctic sea ice needs to be further explored. In this study, we investigate the relationship between sea-ice variation and different atmospheric diagnostics during MYLA and other La Niña (OTLA) years. The decline in BKS sea ice during MYLA winters is significantly stronger than that during OTLA years. This is because MYLA events tend to be accompanied by a warm Arctic–cold continent pattern with a barotropic high pressure blocked over the Urals region. Consequently, more frequent northward atmospheric rivers intrude into the BKS, intensifying longwave radiation downward to the underlying surface and melting the BKS sea ice. However, in the early winter of OTLA years, a negative North Atlantic Oscillation presents in the high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, which obstructs the atmospheric rivers to the south of Iceland. We infer that such a different response of BKS sea-ice decline to different La Niña events is related to stratospheric processes. Warming-induced carbon loss via ecosystem respiration (Re) is probably intensifying in the alpine grassland ecosystem of the Tibetan Plateau owing to more accelerated warming and the higher temperature sensitivity of Re (Q10). However-little is known about the patterns and controlling factors of Q10 on the plateau, impeding the comprehension of the intensity of terrestrial carbon–climate feedbacks for these sensitive and vulnerable ecosystems. Here, we synthesized and analyzed multiyear observations from 14 sites to systematically compare the spatiotemporal variations of Q10 values in diverse climate zones and ecosystems, and further explore the relationships between Q10 and environmental factors. Moreover, structural equation modeling was utilized to identify the direct and indirect factors predicting Q10 values during the annual, growing, and non-growing seasons. The results indicated that the estimated Q10 values were strongly dependent on temperature, generally, with the average Q10 during different time periods increasing with air temperature and soil temperature at different measurement depths (5 cm, 10 cm, 20 cm). The Q10 values differentiated among ecosystems and climatic zones, with warming-induced Q10 declines being stronger in colder regions than elsewhere based on spatial patterns. NDVI was the most cardinal factor in predicting annual Q10 values, significantly and positively correlated with Q10. Soil temperature (Ts) was identified as the other powerful predictor for Q10, and the negative Q10–Ts relationship demonstrates a larger terrestrial carbon loss potentiality in colder than in warmer regions in response to global warming. Note that the interpretations of the effect of soil moisture on Q10 were complicated, reflected in a significant positive relationship between Q10 and soil moisture during the growing season and a strong quadratic correlation between the two during the annual and non-growing season. The exchange of momentum, heat and trace gases between atmosphere and surface is mainly controlled by turbulent fluxes. Turbulent mixing is usually parametrized using Monin–Obukhov similarity theory (MOST), which was derived for steady turbulence over homogeneous and flat surfaces, but is nevertheless routinely applied to unsteady turbulence over non-homogeneous surfaces. We study four years of eddy-covariance measurements at a highly heterogeneous alpine valley site in Finse, Norway, to gain insights into the validity of MOST, the turbulent transport mechanisms and the contributing coherent structures. The site exhibits a bimodal topography-following flux footprint, with the two dominant wind sectors characterized by organized and strongly negative momentum flux, but different anisotropy and contributions of submeso-scale motions, leading to a failure of eddy-diffusivity closures and different transfer efficiencies for different scalars. The quadrant analysis of the momentum flux reveals that under stable conditions sweeps transport more momentum than the more frequently occurring ejections, while the opposite is observed under unstable stratification. From quadrant analysis, we derive the ratio of the amount of disorganized to organized structures, that we refer to as organization ratio (OR). We find an invertible relation between transfer efficiency and corresponding organization ratio with an algebraic sigmoid function. The organization ratio further explains the scatter around scaling functions used in MOST and thus indicates that coherent structures modify MOST. Our results highlight the critical role of coherent structures in turbulent transport in heterogeneous tundra environments and may help to find new parametrizations for numerical weather prediction or climate models. Rapid anthropogenic climate change has elevated the interest in studying the biotic responses of species during the Last Glacial Maximum. During this period, species retreated to highly spatially restricted geographic regions where survival was possible, known as glacial micro-refugia, from which they migrated and expanded when conditions became more suitable. Several distinct sources of evidence have contributed to developing a new understanding of how these regions might have impacted the sustainability of the natural populations of many species. Pollen records in Eastern Beringia have been used to explore the possibility that the region harbored glacial refugia for several plants from the arctic tundra and/or the boreal forest biomes common to the region. Our study focuses on Alnus viridis and Picea glauca, two predominant species of arcto-boreal vegetation. We propose to integrate genomic, SDM, and existing fossil data in a hierarchical Bayesian modeling (HBM) framework to determine whether multiple refugia existed in isolated geographic areas. This study demonstrates how the flexibility of HBMs makes the formal synthesis of such disparate data sources feasible. Our results highlight the regions of plausible refugia that can guide future investigations into studying the role of glacial refugia during climate change. One of the most prominent factors contributing to global landscape cover change is land use and land cover (LULC). Such changes are the outcome of several interrelated factors. This study assessed trends in land use and land cover within Hirpora from 1992 to 2006 and 2021 utilizing remote sensing data and satellite pictures from Landsat 5-TM in 1992, Landsat 7-enhanced TM in 2006, and Landsat 8-OLI in 2021. The images were analyzed using ArcGIS v10.1 and ERDAS Imagine v14. From 1992 to 2021, there was a substantial shift in land use trends in a few targeted classes, with snow cover losing the most (33.76%), followed by dense forests (6.80%), and economically grasslands (21.46%), barren/rocky (11.43%), and scrub (5.41%) gaining the most. During the observation period, moderately dense forests and build-up increased in area by 4.50 and 0.35%, respectively. Due to large-scale human intrusion and habitat fragmentation, the Hirpora Wildlife Sanctuary has swiftly transitioned from a natural to a cultural landscape. The warming climate in high-latitude permafrost regions is leading to permafrost degradation. Estimating seismic wave velocities in permafrost could help predict the geomechanical properties of permafrost and provide information to plan and design resilient civil infrastructure in cold regions. This paper evaluates the performance of seven models when predicting the seismic wave velocities of permafrost statistically; these models are the time-average, Zimmerman and King, Minshull et al., weighted equation, three-phase, Biot–Gassmann theory modified by Lee (BGTL), and Dou et al. models. The data used in the evaluation are from published laboratory and in situ data, which includes 369 data points for joint P and S wave velocities from nine publications and 943 unfrozen water content data points from 12 publications. The unfrozen water content that is used in these models is determined from a modified Dall'Amico's model that is proposed, which is evaluated against six existing unfrozen water content models based on soil temperature. This paper finds that saturated nonsaline permafrost generally shares similar linear trends between the P and S wave velocities, regardless of soil type, porosity, grain size, and temperature. Fitting all existing data, an empirical linear relationship is derived between the P and S wave velocities. Among the seven models evaluated, the Minshull et al. and BGTL models are the most accurate when predicting the seismic velocities of permafrost. Practical Applications: Unfrozen water content and seismic wave velocity models are valuable tools for quantitatively predicting permafrost dynamics and degradation, with practical applications in various engineering areas with permafrost environments. As permafrost thaws due to rising temperatures, these models could be used to guide the quantitative interpretation of geophysical changes in subsurface conditions, assess the potential for ground instability, and predict future permafrost degradation. Unfrozen water content models are used to predict the percentage of unfrozen water within permafrost, which links the changes with permafrost temperature. Unfrozen water content models of permafrost are essential when assessing permafrost thaw, thermal performance, heat transfer processes in permafrost, and the effect of civil infrastructure on permafrost (Chen et al.,). Migratory species have the potential to strongly mediate stability of resident communities. However, the seasonal nature of their interactions has limited integration into ecological theory likely due to the large temporal variability and spatial scales involved. Here, we develop a novel framework to partition community dynamics which have migrating species. We extend classical notions of resilience, which measure the rate of convergence to equilibrium, to seasonal systems switching between multiple equilibria using (hybrid) Lyapunov stability theory to capture "far from equilibrium" dynamics. Each transition to a new season consists of perturbation, with a stock imbalance inherited from the previous season. Our new resilience metric is defined from the recovery time following this transition required for the community to approach the new seasonal equilibrium. We apply our method to an Arctic tundra food web with distinct summer and winter dynamics and assess the resilience of the community to longer summer season lengths predicted by climate change scenarios. This simulation scenario emphasizes the relative importance of distinct food web topologies between seasons due to migration. Our study demonstrates the feasibility of developing a theory of species interactions in seasonal environments, with deep ramifications for central ecological concepts such as resilience. Modern climatic changes have an impact on the bearing capacity of permafrost soils at the base of the foundations of buildings and structures in the urbanized territories of the Arctic and Subarctic. The activation of cryogenic processes leads to the destruction of infrastructure and to social, economic, and environmental consequences for the population. Based on the results for the geothermy of frozen and thawing soil, and on the georadar profiling of the city of Anadyr, it was concluded that the main risks of permafrost degradation are associated with the spread of hydrogenic melting zones. Maps of the soil temperature in imaginary cross-sections with depths of 3, 5, and 10 m were compiled, along with maps of the capacity of thawing soils, the permafrost aquifer, and the dangerous spread zones for exogenous cryogenic processes. The total area of talik zones with a depth of 6 m or more in the urban area was 2.34 km2, or 67% of the built-up area. The system of permafrost monitoring in the territory of Anadyr was substantiated, and is based on monitoring the boundaries of talik zones. It consists of an automated network of observations of the ground temperature in 35 wells at the boundary and in the center of 20 zones of the dangerous development of exogenous cryogenic processes, as well as 12 control GPR profiles at the intersection of linear hydrogenic taliks. One of the most conspicuous signals of climate change in high‐latitude tundra is the expansion of ice wedge thermokarst pools. These small but abundant water features form rapidly in depressions caused by the melting of ice wedges (i.e., meter‐scale bodies of ice embedded within the top of the permafrost). Pool expansion impacts subsequent thaw rates through a series of complex positive and negative feedbacks which play out over timescales of decades and may accelerate carbon release from the underlying sediments. Although many local observations of ice wedge thermokarst pool expansion have been documented, analyses at continental to pan‐Arctic scales have been rare, hindering efforts to project how strongly this process may impact the global carbon cycle. Here we present one of the most geographically extensive and temporally dense records yet compiled of recent pool expansion, in which changes to pool area from 2008 to 2020 were quantified through satellite‐image analysis at 27 survey areas (measuring 10–35 km2 each, or 400 km2 in total) dispersed throughout the circumpolar tundra. The results revealed instances of rapid expansion at 44% (± $\pm $15%) of survey areas. Considered alone, the extent of departures from historical mean air temperatures did not account for between site variation in rates of change to pool area. Pool growth was most clearly associated with upland (i.e., hilly) terrain and elevated silt content at soil depths greater than one meter. These findings suggest that, at short time scales, pedologic and geomorphologic conditions may exert greater control on pool dynamics in the warming Arctic than spatial variability in the rate of air temperature increases. Increases in shrub height, biomass and canopy cover are key whole‐plant features of warming‐induced vegetation change in tundra. We investigated leaf functional traits underlying photosynthetic capacity of Arctic shrub species, particularly its main limiting processes such as mesophyll conductance. In this nutrient‐limited ecosystem, we expect leaf nitrogen concentration to be the main limiting factor for photosynthesis. We measured the net photosynthetic rate at saturated light (Asat) in three Salix species throughout a glacial valley in High‐Arctic tundra and used a causal approach to test relationships between leaf stomatal and mesophyll conductances (gsc, gm), carboxylation capacity (Vcmax), nitrogen and phosphorus concentration (Narea, Parea) and leaf mass ratio (LMA). Arctic Salix species showed no difference in Asat compared to a global data set, while being characterized by higher Narea, Parea and LMA. Vcmax, gsc and gm independently increased Asat, with Vcmax as its main limitation. We highlighted a nitrogen‐influenced pathway for increasing photosynthesis in the two prostrate mesic habitat species. In contrast, the erect wetland habitat Salix richardsonii mainly increased Asat with increasing gsc. Overall, our study revealed high photosynthetic capacities of Arctic Salix species but contrasting regulatory pathways that may influence shrub ability to respond to environmental changes in High Arctic tundra. The Arctic, an essential ecosystem on Earth, is subject to pronounced anthropogenic pressures, most notable being the climate change and risks of crude oil pollution. As crucial elements of Arctic environments, benthic microbiomes are involved in climate-relevant biogeochemical cycles and hold the potential to remediate upcoming contamination. Yet, the Arctic benthic microbiomes are among the least explored biomes on the planet. Here we combined geochemical analyses, incubation experiments, and microbial community profiling to detail the biogeography and biodegradation potential of Arctic sedimentary microbiomes in the northern Barents Sea. The results revealed a predominance of bacterial and archaea phyla typically found in the deep marine biosphere, such as Chloroflexi, Atribacteria , and Bathyarcheaota. The topmost benthic communities were spatially structured by sedimentary organic carbon, lacking a clear distinction among geographic regions. With increasing sediment depth, the community structure exhibited stratigraphic variability that could be correlated to redox geochemistry of sediments. The benthic microbiomes harbored multiple taxa capable of oxidizing hydrocarbons using aerobic and anaerobic pathways. Incubation of surface sediments with crude oil led to proliferation of several genera from the so-called rare biosphere. These include Alkalimarinus and Halioglobus , previously unrecognized as hydrocarbon-degrading genera, both harboring the full genetic potential for aerobic alkane oxidation. Remote Arctic communities have often been depicted as being particularly vulnerable to the challenges of disasters, with their location and lack of infrastructure exacerbating risk. This study explores the characteristics of local resilience in the Arctic using the case study of the communities of the northwestern Westfjords. A total of 42 semi-structured interviews were carried out with various community members, seeking to uncover the features of inbuilt resilience that contribute to successes and vulnerabilities. These were transcribed, coded, and categorised in relation to an integrated framework for assessing community resilience in disaster management, which groups topics via the themes of environmental, social, governance, economic, and infrastructure. All themes played a role in the success of local coping strategies, with easy access to the natural environment central to physical and mental well-being. Despite this, vulnerabilities of the community were evident, including insufficient local healthcare workers during a severe COVID-19 outbreak in a care home, the absence of a local quarantine hotel, and insufficient information in foreign languages for non-natives of Iceland. The general trend of following rules and expert advice was demonstrative of strong social capital, with locals trusting those in charge, nationally and locally, to manage the pandemic. Influenced by climate change, numerous lakes in permafrost regions are draining, showing significant spatial variability. This study focuses on St. Lawrence Island, where over the last two decades, 771 of 3,271 lakes have drained—a rate around 40 times higher than across the entire northern permafrost region. The surge in lake drainage began in 2018, coinciding with record low sea ice extent in the Bering Sea and unprecedented bird mortalities. Using satellite imagery and machine learning methods, we analyzed drainage events to identify the climatic drivers and potential climate thresholds affecting the island's lake ecosystems. Our findings indicate that autumn peak temperatures above 6°C more than triple the drainage probability, and warming‐induced permafrost thawing may be the direct driver of lake drainage. This research highlights the vulnerability of Arctic lake ecosystems to climate change and assists in developing predictive models for permafrost response, crucial for mitigating impacts on Arctic communities. Conventional and recently developed approaches for estimating turbulent scalar fluxes under stable atmospheric conditions are evaluated, with a focus on gases for which fast sensors are not readily available. First, the relaxed eddy accumulation (REA) classical approach and a recently proposed mixing length parameterization, labeled A22, are tested against eddy-covariance computations. Using high-frequency measurements collected from two contrasting sites (the frozen tundra near Utqiaġvik, Alaska, and a sparsely vegetated grassland in Wendell, Idaho, during winter), it is shown that the REA and A22 models outperform the conventional Monin–Obukhov similarity theory (MOST) utilized widely to infer fluxes from mean gradients. Second, scenarios where slow trace gas sensors are the only viable option in field measurements are investigated using digital filtering applied to fast-response sensors to simulate their slow-response counterparts. With a filtered scalar signal, the observed filtered eddy-covariance fluxes are referred to here as large-eddy-covariance (LEC) fluxes. A virtual eddy accumulation (VEA) approach, akin to the REA model but not requiring a mechanical apparatus to separate the gas flows, is also formulated and tested. A22 outperforms VEA and LEC in predicting the observed unfiltered (total) eddy-covariance (EC) fluxes; however, VEA can still capture the LEC fluxes well. This finding motivates the introduction of a sensor response time correction into the VEA formulation to offset the effect of sensor filtering on the underestimated net averaged fluxes. The only needed parameter for this correction is the mean velocity at the instrument height, a surrogate of the advective timescale. This study evaluates the seasonal and inter-seasonal temperature regime of small tundra ponds ubiquitous to an extensive, low-gradient wetland in the Canadian High Arctic. Pond temperatures can modify evaporation and ground thaw rates, impact losses of greenhouse gases, and control the timing and emergence of insects and larvae critical for migratory-bird feeding habits. We focus our study on thaw ponds with a range of hydrologic linkages and sizes across Nanuit Itillinga, formerly known as Polar Bear Pass (PBP), Bathurst Island, and compare their thermal signals to other Arctic ponds. Pond temperatures and water levels were evaluated using temperature and water level loggers and verified by regular manual measurements. Other environmental data collected included microclimate, frost table depths, and water conductivity. Our results show that there is much variability in pond thermal regimes over seasons, years, and space. Cumulative relative pond temperatures were similar across years, with ponds normally reaching 10–15 °C for short to longer periods, except in 2013, which experienced a cold summer season during which pond temperatures never exceeded 5 °C. Pond frost tables and water conductivities respond to variable substrate conditions and pond thermal patterns. ABSTRACT The Greenland–Scotland Ridge is a submarine mountain that rises up to 500 m below the sea surface and extends from the east coast of Greenland to the continental shelf of Iceland and across the Faroe Islands to Scotland. The ridge not only separates deeper ocean basins on either side, that is, the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans, but also forms a geomorphological barrier between the cold arctic water masses of the Nordic Seas and the comparably contrastingly warmer water of the North Atlantic Ocean. It is therefore situated at a strategic geographical position in relation to the effect of climate change in the Arctic region. Both the Arctic and the Atlantic subpolar ecosystems are facing each other at the ridge, creating oceanic fronts in the Denmark Strait and in the Iceland–Faroe ridge alike. This ridge in the subarctic area forms the southern boundary of the North Atlantic Gateway to the Arctic Ocean, affecting exchanges of oceanic currents and of marine organisms between the two main ecosystems in the Nordic polar region. For example, the appearance of natural invasive species such as the Atlantic mackerel in this region mainly occurred along the ridge, with arrival through the Scotland–Faroe Islands mount with subsequent waves of colonization which eventually reached the southern tip of Greenland. With the increasing impacts of climate change, such natural colonization through the ridge is likely to happen more frequently and affect regional ecosystems. Yet, the human resources and the economy of the local nations on the ridge are rather limited compared to neighboring countries. With a total of less than half a million people inhabiting the area and a total ocean surface of circa 3 million km2 of continental shelf, Greenland, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, and Scotland will face critical challenges in the coming years with respect to biodiversity conservation and sustainable management of marine resources. Here is a summary of what we know, what we might expect, and an opening to potential discussions for the future of research in this region. The main objective of this paper is calling attention to much needed additional research effort on the marine environment around the Greenland–Scotland Ridge, instead of presenting a comprehensive overview of research in this area. Studies in recent decades have shown strong evidence of physical and biological changes in the Arctic tundra, largely in response to rapid rates of warming. Given the important implications of these changes for ecosystem services, hydrology, surface energy balance, carbon budgets, and climate feedbacks, research on the trends and patterns of these changes is becoming increasingly important and can help better constrain estimates of local, regional, and global impacts as well as inform mitigation and adaptation strategies. Despite this great need, scientific understanding of tundra ecology and change remains limited, largely due to the inaccessibility of this region and less intensive studies compared to other terrestrial biomes. A synthesis of existing datasets from past field studies can make field data more accessible and open up possibilities for collaborative research as well as for investigating and informing future studies. Here, we synthesize field datasets of vegetation and active-layer properties from the Alaskan tundra, one of the most well-studied tundra regions. Given the potentially increasing intensive fire regimes in the tundra, fire history and severity attributes have been added to data points where available. The resulting database is a resource that future investigators can employ to analyze spatial and temporal patterns in soil, vegetation, and fire disturbance-related environmental variables across the Alaskan tundra. Polar regions are critically implicated in our understanding of global climate change. This is particularly the case for the Arctic, where positive feedback loops and climate tipping points enhance complexity and urgency. Half of the Arctic and much of the world's permafrost zone lie within Russian territory. Heightened geopolitical tensions, however, have severely damaged scientific collaboration between Russia and previously well established academic partners in western countries. Isolation is now causing increasingly large data gaps in arctic research that affect our ability to make accurate predictions of the impact of climate change on natural and societal systems at all scales from local to global. Here, we argue that options to resume both practical knowledge of collaborative working and flows of research data from Russia for global arctic science must continue to be asserted, despite an increasing tendency for the Arctic to become disconnected. Time is short, as preparations for the fifth International Polar Year begin to gather momentum. While sanctions remain in place, efforts to foster peer to peer connections and re-activate effective institutional cooperation are vital to address the grand challenges of global climate change. Arctic regions are warming significantly faster than other parts of the globe, leading to changes in snow, ice and weather conditions, ecosystems and local cultures. These changes have brought worry and concern and triggered feelings of loss among Arctic Indigenous Peoples and local communities. Recently, research has started to address emotional and social dimensions of climate change, framed through the concept of ecological grief. In this study, we examine sociocultural impacts of climate change and expressions of ecological grief among members of reindeer herding communities in the Sámi Homeland in Finland. Results indicate that ecological grief is felt in connection to major environmental concerns in the area: changes in winter weather and extreme weather events, Atlantic salmon decline and land use changes, which all have cultural and social consequences.
