Abstract

The combined action of ultraviolet irradiation and microwave heating onto acetonitrile solution of [Re(NN)(CO)3(NCMe)]OTf (NN =phenantroline and neocuproine) afforded cis,trans‐Re(NN)(CO)2(NCMe)2]+ acetonitrile derivatives. Substitution of relatively labile NCMe with a series of aromatic N‐donor ligands (pyridine, pyrazine, 4,4'‐bipyridine, N‐methyl‐4,4'‐bipyridine) gave a novel family of the diimine cis,trans‐[Re(NN)(CO)2(L)2]+ complexes. Photophysical studies of the obtained compounds in solution revealed unusually high absorption across the visible region and NIR phosphorescence with emission band maxima ranging from 711 to 805 nm. The nature of emissive excited states was studied using DFT calculations to show dominant contribution of 3MLCT (dπ(Re)→π*(NN)) character. Electrochemical (CV and DPV) studies of the monocationic diimine complexes revealed one reduction and one oxidation wave assigned to reduction of the diimine moiety and oxidation of the rhenium center, respectively. Abstract

PubMedID: 23082705 Background and aims: Diabetes Mellitus, leading to an increase in oxidative stress, can cause liver damage. Our aim was to investigate the antioxidant effects of Ethyl Pyruvate (EP) on the liver tissue in diabetic rats. Materials and methods: Thirty-two Wistar albino rats were separated into four equal groups. Groups were assigned as follows: (1) Non-diabetic group; (2) EP-treated non-diabetic group; (3) diabetic group; and (4) EP-treated diabetic group. In order to induce diabetes mellitus, 45 mg/kg b.w. streptozotocin was administered intraperitoneally to the rats in groups 3 and 4. On the 3rd day, blood glucose was assessed. Rats with blood glucose levels higher than 300 mg/dl were considered to be diabetic. The EP solution was administered intraperitoneally at a dose of 50 mg/kg b.w. twice daily for 14 days to the rats in groups 2 and 4. The other rats were simultaneously given the same amount of Ringer's lactate solution intraperitoneally. Liver tissue was obtained for malondialdehyde (MDA) analyses and histopathological examination. Results: In group 4, Total Antioxidant Status (TOS) and MDA levels were significantly lower as compared to group 3. Also, morphological abnormalities occurred in group 3 when compared with non-diabetic groups (groups 1 and 2), whereas the disorders resulting from diabetes improved significantly in group 4. Conclusions: These findings show that EP has protective effects against diabetes-induced liver injury.

24. Ultrastructural Changes in the Kidney Cortex of Rats Treated with Lead Acetate

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the ultrastructural effects of lead on the kidney cortex of rats. Wistar Albino rats (180-200g body weight) were divided into a controlled and lead acetate-exposed group. Rats received lead acetate at 500 ppm in their drinking water for 60 days. Both groups were fed with the same standard food, but lead acetate was added to the drinking water. During the experimental period, blood samples were taken from the abdominal aorta of the anesthetised animals. At the end of exposure, body weight and blood lead levels were measured. The kidney tissue samples were prepared and analyzed by light and transmission electron microscopy. Cortical renal tubules show various degenerative changes with focal tubular necrosis invaded by inflammatory cells. The ultrastructural alterations found in lead acetate-treated rats were a diminution in the amount of filtration slits, increased fusion of foot processes in epithelial cells of the glomeruli, increase of lysosomal structures and pinocytic vesicles as well as large mitochondria in proximal tubule cells. El propósito de este estudio fue investigar los efectos ultraestructurales del plomo en la corteza renal. Ratas Wistar albinas (180-200g de peso corporal) fueron divididas en grupo control y grupo experimental. Las ratas recibieron 500 ppm de acetato de plomo en el agua potable durante 60 días. Ambos grupos fueron alimentados con el mismo alimento estándar, pero acetato de plomo se le añadió al agua potable al grupo experimental. Durante el período experimental, se tomaron bajo anestesia muestras sanguíneas desde la parte abdominal de la aorta. Al final de la exposición, fueron medidos el peso corporal y los niveles de plomo en la sangre. Fueron preparadas las muestras de tejido renal y se analizaron mediante microscopía de luz y electrónica de transmisión. Los túbulos renales corticales mostraron varios cambios degenerativos con necrosis tubular focal invadida por células inflamatorias. Las alteraciones ultraestructurales encontradas en las ratas tratadas con acetato de plomo correspondieron a una disminución en la cantidad de ranuras de filtración, aumento de la fusión de los procesos podales en las células epiteliales de los glomérulos, aumento de la estructura lisosomal y las vesículas pinocíticas, así como grandes mitocondrias en las células del túbulo proximal.

37. The combined effect of rosuvastatin and ischemic pre- or post-conditioning on myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury in rat heart.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the combined effect of rosuvastatin and ischemic preconditioning or postconditioning on ischemiareperfusion injury in in vivo rat heart. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninenty-six male adultWistar rats were randomly assigned to eight groups: Sham group, ischemia-reperfusion, rosuvastatin preconditioning, rosuvastatin postconditioning, ischemic preconditioning, ischemic postconditioning, ischemic + pharmacologic preconditioning and ischemic + pharmacologic postconditioning groups. Blood samples were taken for creatine kinase evaluation at selected time points. Six rats in each group were separated for either infarct size assessment or immunohistochemical staining with Bcl-2 antibody. RESULTS: The staining with Bcl-2 was significantly lower in groups Sham, ischemic + pharmacologic preconditioning and ischemic + pharmacologic postconditioning groups which is well correlated with the decrease in infarct size for the same groups.The creatine kinase enzyme levels were also reduced to their lowest levels in ischemic + pharmacologic preconditioning and ischemic + pharmacologic postconditioning groups. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that enriching the composition of reperfusate with rosuvastatin along with ischemic preconditioning or postconditioning procedures at the opposite sides of ischemia may interact synergistically for protecting ischemic myocardium from reperfusion injury. The combined application of rosuvastatin with ischemic preconditioning or ischemic postconditioning may provide a new therapeutic option in clinical interventions when compared to single treatment with ischemic and rosuvastatin preconditioning or postconditioning. Binuclear bridged complexes [(bpy)2Ru(μ-bptz)Re(CO)3·(Hlg)](X)2 [bptz = 3,6-bis(2-pyridyl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine; Hlg = Cl, X = BF4 or Hlg = Br, X = NO3]. Were synthesized and studied by mass spectrometry and infrared and electronic spectroscopy. The complexes give a strong long-wave band in the electronic absorption spectrum. Abstract

Continuous copper structures were precipitated on microscope cover glasses by the laser-induced chemical liquid phase deposition (LCLD) method. The deposition of copper was realized from both CuSO4- and CuCl2-based electrolyte solutions. The surface morphology and the chemical composition of the deposits were analyzed with a scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX). The dependence of the characteristics (width and resistance) of the copper deposits on the laser power, temperature and the salt precursor was examined. The observed strong influence of the solution temperature and the salt precursor on the deposits characteristics was explained by the specific chemical features of the Cu(II)→Cu(0) reduction process. Abstract

Two new disubstituted derivatives of the clusters Rh6(CO)16 and H4Ru4(CO)12 with the heterobidentate ligand [Ph2P(2-CH3SC6H4)] were synthesized. Structures of these compounds were completely characterized both in solid phase and solution. The H4Ru4(CO)10[k2(P,S)-Ph2P(2-CH3SC6H4)] cluster is an example of a structure, in which a chelating coordination of a heterobidentate ligand results in the occurrence of a center of asymmetry associated with the substituted metal atom. Abstract

A novel bis(oxazoline)−thienylphosphine ligand (3, abbreviated as (S,S)-BOTPHOS) has been synthesized in an enantiomerically pure S,S state and spectroscopically characterized. The reaction of 3 with Rh2(CO)4Cl2 in a dichloromethane solution affords the mononuclear Rh(Cl)2(CH2Cl)(κ3-(S,S)-BOTPHOS) octahedral complex (4), containing BOTPHOS coordinated to the Rh(III) center in a mer mode through the phosphorus atom and the two nitrogens of the oxazoline fragments. The coordination sphere of this complex displays an unusual rigidity, which is determined by intramolecular hydrogen bonding between the chlorides and protons of the organic ligands. Treatment of the CpRhRu3(H)2(CO)10 cluster with a slight excess of (S,S)-BOTPHOS results in the substitution of two carbonyls at a ruthenium atom and chelate coordination of the ligand through the phosphorus and a nitrogen atom of an oxazoline ring to give CpRhRu3(H)2(CO)8(κ2-(S,S)-BOTPHOS) (5). The bidentate coordination mode of BOTPHOS makes the phosphorus atom of this ligand chiral and simultaneously differentiates the ruthenium vertexes in the tetrahedral RhRu3 cluster. This differentiation generates an asymmetry in the cluster framework and introduces a fourth chiral center in the cluster molecule. A specific feature of this reaction consists of the quantitative diastereoselection induced by the chirality of the BOTPHOS oxazoline fragments. This induction produces only S configurations in both of the new chiral elements generated in the cluster molecule. Molecular structures of the complexes obtained have been established by X-ray crystallography and have been confirmed by the NMR spectroscopic study of these compounds in solution. CD spectroscopic measurements of 3−5 indicate that these compounds have been obtained in their enantiopure state.

48. Reaction of (S)-BINAP with H<INF>4</INF>Ru<INF>4</INF>(CO)<INF>12</INF>. The First Example of Face-Bridging BINAP Coordination and 100% Stereoselectivity in Formation of a Chiral Tetranuclear Cluster Framework

Abstract

The reaction of H4Ru4(CO)12 with (S)-BINAP in the presence of Me3NO affords the cluster H4Ru4(CO)10(μ-(S)-BINAP) (2) in good yield. Gentle heating of a benzene−ethanol solution of 2 results in the dissociation of CO and coordination of a naphthyl fragment of BINAP to give H4Ru4(CO)9(μ3-(S)-BINAP) (3) with face-bridging coordination of the diphosphine ligand. The solid-state structures of both clusters have been determined by X-ray crystallography. Their structures in solution and some details of ligand sphere dynamics have been elucidated using 1D variable-temperature 1H and 31P NMR spectroscopy together with selective decoupling measurements and 1H COSY and NOESY experiments. The difference 1H nuclear Overhauser effect (NOE) spectra provide additional support for the structural models suggested by visualization of important intramolecular nonbonding contacts in the molecules under study. The metal frameworks in 2 and 3 are chiral, due to the chemical difference of the ruthenium atoms induced by asymmetry of their ligand environments. The chemical reactions, which result in the formation of 2 and 3, display exceptional stereoselectivity to give a unique S,S configuration of the two ((S)-BINAP and cluster framework) stereogenic centers in the both compounds. The NMR and CD spectroscopic studies indicated that the S,S configuration observed in the solid state remains unchanged in solution. The cluster 3, containing face-bridging BINAP, demonstrates exceptional thermal stability and does not undergo metal framework racemization up to 343 K.

Abstract

Reactions of [H2Os3(CO)10] with a series of diynes, RC2C2R‘ (1:  R = Ph, R‘ = CH2OH; 2:  R = Ph, R‘ = C(O)Ph; 3:  R = R‘ = C(OH)Me2), have been studied. It was found that upon coordination to the triosmium cluster, the nucleophilic oxygens of the R‘ substituents of 1 and 2 take part in intramolecular cyclization reactions to give [HOs3(CO)10{μ-η1:η2-PhCH2(C&dbd;CH−C&dbd;CH−O)}] (5) and [HOs3(CO)10{μ-η1:η1-Ph(C&dbd;CH−C&dbd;C−O)CPh}] (6), respectively, both of which contain furan rings coordinated to the cluster core. On heating of the latter compound, the furan moiety remains intact, but a carbonyl group dissociates from the cluster, leading to the formation of [HOs3(CO)9(μ3-η1:η3:η1-Ph(C&dbd;CH−C&dbd;C−O)CPh)] (7) with a closed “C3Os3” pentagonal pyramidal structure. Reaction of [H2Os3(CO)10] with 3 does not lead to cyclization of the diyne; instead, the clusters [Os3(CO)10{μ3-η2-(RCH&dbd;CH−C2R)}] (8) and [Os3(CO)10{μ3-η2-(RC2C2R)}] (9) are formed. Deuterium labeling of the starting compounds has been used in the reaction of [H2Os3(CO)10] with HOCH2C2C2CH2OH in order to investigate possible mechanisms of the cyclization reaction. The crystal and molecular structures of clusters 5, 7, and 9 are presented.

Reactions of [H2Os3(CO)10] with the substituted diynes R−C2−C2−R‘ (1, R = Ph, R‘ = CH2NHPh; 2, R = Ph, R‘ = CH2NHCH2Ph; 3, R = R‘ = CH2NHPh) afford the clusters [HOs3(CO)10(L)] (L = {μ-η1:η2-PhCH2C(H)&dbd;C−C(H)&dbd;C−NPh} (4), {μ-η1:η2-PhCH2C(H)&dbd;C−C(H)&dbd;C−NCH2Ph} (5), and {μ-η1:η1-CH3CC&dbd;C−C(H)&dbd;C(H)−NPh} (6), which have been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses as well as by various spectroscopic methods. In clusters 4−6, the starting diynes 1−3 have been rearranged to form substituted pyrrolyl rings which bridge two osmium atoms in η1:η2- (4, 5) or η1:η1- (6) coordination modes depending on the nature of substituents in 1−3. A possible reaction pathway for the diyne cyclization reactions that yield 4−6 involves initial transfer of a hydride onto a coordinated diyne followed by a series of 1,3-shifts and subsequent nucleophilic attack of the nitrogen on the third carbon atom of the diyne system to afford the five-membered pyrrolyl ring. Cluster 6 and its previously characterized furanyl analogue [HOs3(CO)10{μ-η1:η1-(OCHCHCC)−C−CH3)}] (7) undergo facile thermal transformation accompanied by the loss of a CO ligand to give the clusters [HOs3(CO)9{μ3,η3-CH3CC&dbd;C−C(H)&dbd;C(H)−NPh}] (8) and [HOs3(CO)9{μ3,η3-(OCH&dbd;CHC&dbd;CCCH3)}] (9). In both 8 and 9, single-crystal X-ray analysis revealed the presence of pentagonal pyramid cluster cores containing three osmium and three carbon atoms.
