Skew axets were first defined by McInroy and Shpectorov where they used the term of axets to classify shapes of an algebra. When they first submitted their paper, it was not known if skew axial algebras exist and now we will present such examples with axet X ′ (1 + 2). Looking at 2-generated primitive axial algebras of Monster type, we will be able to state and prove the classification of such algebras with axet X ′ (1 + 2). Gastric cancer poses a major therapeutic challenge. Improved visualization of tumor margins at the time of gastrectomy with fluorescent tumor-specific antibodies could improve outcomes. The present report demonstrates the potential of targeting gastric cancer with a humanized anti-carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) antibody in orthotopic mouse models. MKN45 cells were injected subcutaneously into nude mice to establish xenograft models. Tumor fragments collected from subcutaneous models were then implanted into the greater curvature of the stomach to establish orthotopic models. For tumor labeling, a humanized anti-CEA antibody (M5A) and IgG as a control, were conjugated with the near-infrared dye IRDye800CW. Time (24-72 h) and dose (50-100 μg) response curves were performed in subcutaneous models. Orthotopic models received 50 μg of M5A-IR800 or 50 μg IgG-IR800 as a control and were imaged after 72 h. Fluorescence imaging was performed on the mice using the LI-COR Pearl Imaging System. In subcutaneous models, tumor to background ratios (TBRs) reached 8.85 at 72 h. Median TBRs of orthotopic model primary tumors were 6.25 (interquartile range [IQR] 6.03-7.12) for M5A-IR800 compared to 0.42 (IQR 0.38-0.54) for control. Abdominal wall metastasis median TBRs were 13.52 (IQR 12.79-13.76) for M5A-IR800 and 3.19 (IQR 2.65-3.73) for the control. Immunohistochemistry confirmed CEA expression within tumors. Humanized anti-CEA antibodies conjugated to near-infrared dyes provide specific labeling of gastric cancers in mouse models. Orthotopic models demonstrated bright and specific labeling with TBRs greater than ten times that of control. At the start of the 20th century, cesarean section (CS) was uncommon in obstetrics. By the end of the century, CS rates had increased dramatically worldwide. Although the explanation for the increase is multifactorial, a major driver in the ongoing escalation is the increase in women who are delivered by repeat CS. This is due, in part, to the fact that there has been a sharp fall in vaginal birth after CS (VBAC) rates as fewer women are offered a trial of labor after CS (TOLAC), due principally to fears of a catastrophic intrapartum uterine rupture. This paper reviewed international VBAC policies and trends. A number of themes emerged. The risk of intrapartum rupture and its associated complications is low and may sometimes be overestimated. Individual maternity hospitals in both developed and developing countries are inadequately resourced to safely supervise a TOLAC. Efforts to mitigate the risks of TOLAC by careful patient selection and good clinical practices may be underutilized. Given the serious short‐term and long‐term consequences of rising CS rates for women and for maternity services generally, a review of TOLAC policies worldwide should be prioritized and consideration given to convening a Global Consensus Development Conference on Delivery after CS. Colorectal cancer (CRC) patients often develop liver metastasis. However, curative resection of liver metastasis is not always possible due to poor visualization of tumor margins. The present study reports the characterization of a humanized anti-carcinoembryonic antigen monoclonal antibody conjugated to a PEGylated near-infrared dye, that targets and brightly labels human CRC tumors in metastatic orthotopic mouse models. The hT84.66-M5A (M5A) monoclonal antibody was conjugated with a polyethylene glycol (PEG) chain that incorporated a near infrared (NIR) IR800 dye to establish M5A-IR800 Sidewinder (M5A-IR800-SW). Nude mice with CRC orthotopic primary tumors and liver metastasis both developed from a human CRC cell line, were injected with M5A-IR800-SW and imaged with the Pearl Trilogy Imaging System. M5A-IR800-SW targeted and brightly labeled CRC tumors, both in primary-tumor and liver-metastasis models. M5A-IR800-SW at 75 μg exhibited highly-specific tumor labeling in a primary-tumor orthotopic model with a median tumor-to-background ratio of 9.77 and in a liver-metastasis orthotopic model with a median tumor-to-background ratio of 7.23 at 96 h. The precise labeling of the liver metastasis was due to lack of hepatic accumulation of M5A-IR800-SW in the liver. M5A-IR800-SW provided bright and targeted NIR images of human CRC in orthotopic primary-tumor and liver-metastasis mouse models. The results of the present study suggest the clinical potential of M5A-IR800-SW for fluorescence-guided surgery including metastasectomies for CRC. Accurately identifying metastatic disease is critical to directing the appropriate treatment in pancreatic cancer. Mucin 5AC is overexpressed in pancreatic cancer but absent in normal pancreas tissue. The present proof-of-concept study demonstrates the efficacy of an anti-mucin 5AC antibody conjugated to an IR800 dye (MUC5AC-IR800) to preferentially label a liver metastasis of pancreatic cancer (Panc Met) in a unique patient-derived orthotopic xenograft (PDOX) model. In orthotopic models, the mean tumor to background ratio was 1.787 (SD ± 0.336), and immunohistochemistry confirmed the expression of MUC5AC within tumor cells. MUC5AC-IR800 provides distinct visualization of pancreatic cancer liver metastasis in a PDOX mouse model, demonstrating its potential utility in staging laparoscopy and fluorescence-guided surgery. The transformation—powered by ideas, technology, a paradigm shift, and culture change—has revolutionized our understanding of the Universe, with the Lambda cold dark matter (ΛCDM) paradigm as its crowning achievement. Gastric cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths, with more than one million new cases and approximately 841,000 deaths annually worldwide. We report a case of a young patient (25 years old) with an aggressive form of gastric cancer. The patient had previously been treated for Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), which is a main risk factor for developing gastric cancer. Genetic testing showed an E-cadherin (CDH1) germline mutation of unknown significance. After eight cycles of chemotherapy, a positron emission tomography (PET) scan showed disease progression with an enlarging hypermetabolic right adnexal mass suspicious for metastatic disease. Tumor pathology demonstrated invasive and poorly differentiated gastric carcinoma. The analysis of the tumor biopsy indicated the very high expression of a chemokine, C-X-C motif chemokine 5 (CXCL5). The combination of H. pylori infection with an existence of a rare CDH1 mutation could have contributed to this aggressive gastric cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tumor-specific targeting with fluorescent probes can enhance contrast for identification of cancer during surgical resection and visualize otherwise invisible tumor margins. Nanobodies are the smallest naturally-occurring antigen-binding molecules with rapid pharmacokinetics. The present work demonstrates the efficacy of a fluorescent anti-CEA nanobody conjugated to an IR800 dye to target and label patient derived pancreatic cancer xenografts. After intravenous administration, the probe rapidly localized to the pancreatic cancer tumors within an hour and had a tumor-to-background ratio of 2.0 by 3 h. The fluorescence signal was durable over a prolonged period of time. CrystalExplorer is a native cross‐platform program supported on Windows, MacOS and Linux with the primary function of visualization and investigation of molecular crystal structures, especially through the decorated Hirshfeld surface and its corresponding two‐dimensional fingerprint, and through the visualization of void spaces in the crystal via isosurfaces of the promolecule electron density. Over the past decade, significant changes and enhancements have been incorporated into the program, such as the capacity to accurately and quickly calculate and visualize quantitative intermolecular interactions and, perhaps most importantly, the ability to interface with the Gaussian and NWChem programs to calculate quantum‐mechanical properties of molecules. Background: Gait impairments following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) may contribute to reinjury or future osteoarthritis development. Recently, plantar cutaneous sensation deficits have been reported post-ACLR. These sensory deficits may influence gait and represent a mechanism through which to improve gait.Research Question: Can established sensory interventions change sensation and gait in patients after ACLR and compared to healthy adults?Methods: Twenty-two adults (n = 11 post-ACLR, age:20.5 ± 1.9years, body mass index[BMI]:24.5 ± 3.6 kg/m2; n = 11 healthy, age:20.7 ± 1.4years, BMI:23.3 ± 2.7 kg/m2) completed two sessions separated by 48 h. Gait and plantar cutaneous sensation were assessed pre- and post-intervention (massage or textured insoles). Gait analysis was completed using 3D motion capture at 1.4 m/s ± 5% and standard inverse dynamics analysis. Plantar cutaneous sensation was assessed using Semmes Weinstein Monofilaments with a 4-2-1 stepping algorithm at the plantar aspect of the first metatarsal head, base of the fifth metatarsal, and lateral and medial malleoli. Plantar massage was a 5-minute massage to both feet. Textured insoles (coarse grit sandpaper) were worn while walking. Biomechanical data were assessed via mixed-models, repeated measures ANOVAs and 90 % confidence intervals. Wilcoxon Signed Rank tests and Mann-Whitney U tests evaluated plantar cutaneous sensation within and between groups, respectively.Results: Knee adduction moment was lower in the ACLR versus the contralateral limb pre-massage. The vGRF was lower during the first half of stance but greater during the second half of stance in the ACLR versus the control group post-massage. Massage improved ACLR limb sensation over the first metatarsal head (P = 0.042) and medial malleolus (P = 0.027). Textured insole application improved ACLR limb sensation over the first (P = 0.043) and fifth (P = 0.027) metatarsals and medial malleolus (P = 0.028).Significance: Plantar massage and textured insoles improved plantar cutaneous sensation in the ACLR limb. Neither intervention influenced gait. Improving plantar sensation may be beneficial for patients after ACLR; however, sensory interventions to improve gait are necessary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Poor management of endotracheal tube cuff pressures occurs in more than 50% of all general anesthetics, leading to tracheal ischemia, tracheal rupture, sore throats, recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy, tracheal stenosis, microaspiration, and/or inadequate ventilation. General endotracheal anesthesia is common practice throughout the world. Endotracheal tube cuffs are filled with a fluid (gas or liquid) to a safe and adequate pressure of 20 to 30 cm H2O to protect the lung parenchyma from aspiration while also ensuring positive pressure can be generated to oxygenate/ventilate patients. An evidence-based project to improve anesthesia providers' management of endotracheal tube cuff pressures was performed at a military medical center in the southwestern United States. The intervention consisted of an education presentation, availability of cuff manometers in all operating rooms, a charting reminder to document cuff pressures, and a visual prompt in the electronic anesthesia record. The intervention resulted in a statistically significant increase in safe cuff pressures (P = .0032; odds ratio = 4.41, 95% CI = 1.71-11.3). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

British responses to the American Civil War were not straightforward, though the relevant historiography has tended to concentrate on a number of now quite familiar explanations. The reasons why British people took sides – if they did (for some did not) – are usually thought to have been shaped by the slavery question and concomitant thinking about race, labour systems, and the nature of work; by direct economic interest – cotton, grain, investments, and the potential for future commerce; by political ideas, relating especially to democracy, national self-determination, federalism, and republics; and by geostrategic concerns about how best to preserve Britain's global role and imperial power. These were all important, but so was a relatively neglected set of influences on British opinion that arose from cultural and social determinants. This article suggests that many British people supported the Confederacy because they saw the American South as fundamentally unlike the North and, what is more, as recognizably 'English'. The words and deeds of a prominent pro-Southerner, A.J. Beresford Hope, are used to elucidate this motivation for taking sides. This study examines the degree to which hotel owners influence the operation of their hotels in both single- and multiple-agency scenarios. Key findings from a survey of 499 general managers are that: (1) owners influence financial property-level decisions to a greater extent than operational property-level decisions; (2) owners of independently operated hotels are more involved in such decisions than are owners of hotels operated by a management company; and (3) asset managers assist owners in achieving greater involvement. The findings provide empirical evidence about how principals can mitigate the agency problem in multiple-principal scenarios through client and behavior-based methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Historians have used a number of political, social, and other factors to explain the controversy surrounding elementary education in Victorian Britain. This article underscores the importance of religious motivations. The Act of 1870 – a significant extension of state responsibility – did not end debates about the purpose of education and the pros and cons of government involvement and religious instruction. Prominent among voluntaryists and anti-secularists was A. J. Beresford Hope, whose position offers useful insights into the educational agencies of the Church and the manner in which churchmen responded to new circumstances. This article explains Hope's attitude and uses it to explore some of the causes and consequences of the Act of 1870. What type of schooling best suited the British people? The analysis of room impulse responses to localise reflecting surfaces and estimate room geometry is applicable in numerous aspects of acoustics, including source localisation, acoustic simulation, spatial audio, audio forensics, and room acoustic treatment. Geometry inference is an acoustic analysis problem where information about reflections extracted from impulse responses are used to localise reflective boundaries present in an environment, and thus estimate the geometry of the room. This problem, however, becomes more complex when considering non-convex rooms, as room shape cannot be constrained to a subset of possible convex polygons. This paper presents a geometry inference method for localising reflective boundaries and inferring the room's geometry for convex and non-convex room shapes. The method is tested using simulated room impulse responses for six scenarios, and real-world room impulse responses measured in a cuboid-shaped room, using a spherical microphone array containing multiple spatially distributed channels capable of capturing both time- and direction-of-arrival. Results show that the general shape of the rooms is inferred for each case, with a higher degree of accuracy for convex shaped rooms. However, inaccuracies generally arise as a result of the complexity of the room being inferred, or inaccurate estimation of time- and direction-of-arrival of reflections. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The vision for science proficiency presented in A Framework for K‐12 Science Education calls for significant shifts in both teaching and assessment. In this paper, we describe an effort to develop and validate a set of proximal transfer tasks for high school biology classrooms where teachers were implementing a problem‐based curriculum. The proximal transfer tasks presented students with phenomena related to but distinct from the phenomena they had studied in class and asked students to apply their understanding of disciplinary core ideas, practices, and crosscutting concepts targeted in curriculum. We tested these tasks with a sample of 733 students from 11 teachers' classes. Each of these students completed two tasks before beginning the unit and two tasks after they had finished the unit. We found that nearly all pretest and posttest task pairs were aligned to written opportunities to learn in the curriculum, that is, students showed significant growth over the course of a unit. In addition, task pairs revealed differences across teachers. However, the relative growth of students depended on which tasks students completed, indicating wide variation in task difficulty. Our findings point to the potential of developing three‐dimensional proximal transfer tasks and to the difficulty of constructing equivalent tasks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite major advances in the last century, particularly in high resource settings, maternal sepsis remains a common and potentially preventable cause of direct maternal death globally. A barrier to further progress has been the lack of consensus on the definition of maternal sepsis. Publications from two recent multidisciplinary consensus conferences, one on sepsis in the non-pregnant adult and the other on sepsis in the pregnant woman, concluded that the criteria for diagnosing sepsis should be clinically-based, applicable at the bedside, and should not be laboratory-based. Informed by reviews of the evidence, in 2017 WHO published a new definition of maternal sepsis based on the presence of suspected or confirmed infection. It also announced a Global Maternal and Neonatal Sepsis Initiative to identify the diagnostic criteria for the early identification, epidemiology, and disease classification of maternal sepsis. Standardizing the criteria for maternal sepsis optimizes clinical audit and research. It may facilitate the evaluation of the role of different clinical parameters and biomarkers in the diagnosis, earlier recognition and management of maternal infection and sepsis. Further work is required to develop an international consensus on the criteria for diagnosing maternal sepsis and any associated organ dysfunction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Maternal nutrition may influence intrauterine fetal development. To date, the relationship between contemporary European dietary guidelines and fetal growth has not been examined.Aims: To develop a novel Periconceptual Nutrition Score (PENS) to assess maternal dietary quality in early pregnancy and examine its relationship with fetal growth.Study Design: Women were recruited conveniently at their first clinic visit and completed a supervised four day retrospective diet history. The PENS was developed using European Food Safety Authority recommended dietary intakes for pregnancy. The relationship between PENS and fetal growth was examined.Subjects: Women with a singleton pregnancy.Outcome Measures: Birthweight, small for gestational age (SGA), neonatal head circumference.Results and Conclusions: Of the 202 women, the mean age was 32.2 ± 5.0 years and 44.6% were nulliparas. The mean PENS was 9.4 ± 3.1. On multivariable regression, there was a positive relationship between the PENS and birthweight (beta = 45.3, 95%CI 14.8-75.9, P = 0.002) and neonatal head circumference (beta = 0.12, 95%CI 0.01-0.23, P = 0.03). Compared with the lowest PENS quartile, the mean birthweight was increased in the highest quartile (Mean difference 328 g, P = 0.02). The incidence of SGA was 16.4% (n = 10/61) in the lowest PENS quartile compared to 6.5% (n = 9/139) in the top three quartiles (P = 0.03). Thus, higher maternal dietary quality was associated with increased intrauterine fetal growth. The PENS is potentially useful in identifying those women before or during pregnancy who may benefit from dietary interventions that may optimise fetal growth. Contribution: This paper provides evidence of the lack of gender diversity at audio engineering conferences, using a novel and inclusive gender determination method to produce a new dataset of author gender. Background: Audio engineering has historically been male-dominated; while the number of non-male audio engineers has increased recently, the industry mindset has changed very little. Studies into the gender diversity of this field are required, to force a shift in mindset and create a more inclusive environment. Research Questions: To what extent is there an imbalance in the representation of different genders at audio engineering conferences? Do conference topic, presentation type, or author position have an impact on the gender balance? Methodology: A novel method was designed to obtain pronouns of authors where possible, avoiding removal of data or potential false positives. The main limitation of this methodology is the time required for gender determination. Gender composition was analyzed across 20 conferences, with gender balance further analyzed within four key categories: 1) conference topic; 2) presentation type; 3) position in the author byline; and 4) the number of authors. Findings: This paper demonstrates a clear lack of gender diversity in conference authorship in audio engineering. The results show low overall representation of non-male authors at audio engineering conferences, with significant differences across conference topics, and a notable lack of gender diversity within invited presentations. The in-country individuals selected as team members to build new companies are often recent bachelor's-level technology graduates with little or no business experience. We aim to tackle the challenge of generating unstructured high-order meshes of complex three-dimensional bodies, which remains a significant bottleneck in the wider adoption of high-order methods. In particular we show that by adopting a variational approach to the generation process, many of the current popular high-order generation methods can be encompassed under a single unifying framework. This allows us to compare the effectiveness of these methods and to assess the quality of the meshes they produce in a systematic fashion. We present a detailed overview of the theory and formulation of the variational framework, and we highlight how such formulation can be effectively exploited to yield a highly-efficient parallel implementation. The effectiveness of this approach is examined by considering a number of two- and three-dimensional examples, where we show how the proposed approach can be used for both mesh quality optimisation and untangling of invalid high-order meshes. The ΛCDM cosmological model is remarkable: with just six parameters it describes the evolution of the Universe from a very early time when all structures were quantum fluctuations on subatomic scales to the present, and it is consistent with a wealth of high-precision data, both laboratory measurements and astronomical observations. However, the foundation of ΛCDM involves physics beyond the standard model of particle physics: particle dark matter, dark energy and cosmic inflation. Until this ‘new physics’ is clarified, ΛCDM is at best incomplete and at worst a phenomenological construct that accommodates the data. Understanding and exploiting marine microbial biodiversity is a huge task. Integral to this is the capacity to identify and maintain exemplar taxa ex situ, so that they may be studied or utilized. This paper focuses on protists, primarily photosynthetic protists, including microalgae and macroalgae, as well as the prokaryotic cyanobacteria. It draws together the strands of activities undertaken by scientists in the fields of taxonomy, systematics and algal cultivation associated with the Scottish Association for Marine Science at Oban and its predecessors: the Scottish Marine Station, originally located on a converted lighter, The Ark, in a flooded quarry in Granton near Edinburgh, then subsequently at Millport on the Clyde; the Marine Biological Association – West Scotland at Millport; and the Scottish Marine Biological Association, founded in 1914, initially at Millport and subsequently at Dunstaffnage, Oban. The work undertaken is interwoven with the historical status and development of protistan curation over the past 130 years. The paper also examines the inter-linkages of the organization with the development of cultivation techniques and the provision of biological resources from 1914 by the then newly established Scottish Marine Biological Association to the Culture Collection of Algae and Protozoa today. Finally, we briefly outline current developments that will influence the curation and scientific exploitation of these diverse organisms in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A 63‐year‐old female with multiple cardiovascular risk factors presented with a nontypical chest pain syndrome. Myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) with a regadenoson (Lexiscan) Technetium Tc99 m (Sestamibi) stress test was interpreted as normal. The patient's chest pain syndrome continued, and subsequently, she presented to the emergency room. Cardiac computed tomographic angiography (CCTA) revealed a partially calcified left main coronary artery (LMCA) plaque with mild positive remodeling, having low attenuation (68 Hounsfield units—HU) in the noncalcified portion. In addition, a significant proximal left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) noncalcified plaque was also noted. These lesions were hemodynamically significant by CCTA fractional flow reserve (FFRCT) as evidenced by a significant drop across the LMCA, followed by the LAD and circumflex (CX) vessels. Stenting of the stenosis was performed with resolution of symptoms. The phenomenon of “balanced ischemia” was not readily detected with a regadenoson Technetium Tc99 m perfusion stress test but was readily documented by FFRCT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigated pathways and dynamics of bark water uptake (BWU) in stems of the mangrove Avicennia marina. We provide novel evidence that specific entry points control dynamics of water uptake through the outer bark surface. Furthermore, using a fluorescent symplastic tracer dye we provide the first evidence that lenticels on the outer bark surface facilitate BWU, thus increasing stem water content by up to 3.7%. X‐ray micro‐computed tomography showed that BWU was sufficient to cause measurable swelling of stem tissue layers increasing whole stem cross‐sectional area by 0.83 mm2 or 2.8%, implicating it as a contributor to the diel patterns of water storage recharge that buffer xylem water potential and maintain hydration of living tissue. Biotherapeutics is a rapidly growing drug class, and over 200 biotherapeutics have already obtained approval, with about 50 of these being approved in 2015 and 2016 alone. Several hundred protein therapeutic products are still in the pipeline, including interesting new approaches to treatment. Owing to patients' convenience of at home administration and reduced number of hospital visits as well as the reduction in treatment costs, subcutaneous (SC) administration of biologics is of increasing interest. Although several avenues for treatment using biotherapeutics are being explored, there is still a sufficient gap in knowledge regarding the interplay of formulation conditions, immunogenicity, and pharmacokinetics (PK) of the absorption of these compounds when they are given SC. Although electrical activation of the carotid sinus baroreflex (baroreflex activation therapy) is being explored as a device therapy for resistant hypertension, possible effects on baroreflex dynamic characteristics of interaction between electrical stimulation and pressure inputs are not fully elucidated. To examine whether the electrical stimulation of the baroreceptor afferent nerve impedes normal short-term arterial pressure (AP) regulation mediated by the stimulated nerve, we electrically stimulated the right aortic depressor nerve (ADN) while estimating the baroreflex dynamic characteristics by imposing pressure inputs to the isolated baroreceptor region of the right ADN in nine anesthetized rats. A Gaussian white noise signal with a mean of 120 mmHg and standard deviation of 20 mmHg was used for the pressure perturbation. A tonic ADN stimulation (2 or 5 Hz, 10 V, 0.1-ms pulse width) decreased mean sympathetic nerve activity (367.0 ± 70.9 vs. 247.3 ± 47.2 arbitrary units, P < 0.01) and mean AP (98.4 ± 7.8 vs. 89.2 ± 4.5 mmHg, P < 0.01) during dynamic pressure perturbation. The ADN stimulation did not affect the slope of dynamic gain in the neural arc transfer function from pressure perturbation to sympathetic nerve activity (16.9 ± 1.0 vs. 14.7 ± 1.6 dB/decade, not significant). These results indicate that electrical stimulation of the baroreceptor afferent nerve does not significantly impede the dynamic characteristics of the arterial baroreflex concomitantly mediated by the stimulated nerve. Our goal is to document the general issues that arise in estimating and comparing local crime rates over time and for different cities. Data are drawn from police-based residential burglary counts and the National Crime Victimization Survey to obtain interval estimates of residential burglary incidence at the local level. Ambiguity exists when making point estimates of crime that are based entirely on Uniform Crime Reports data. Sources of this ambiguity include (a) the “Hierarchy Rule,” (b) population estimates used in estimating the burglary rate, and (c) variation in the probability that a residential burglary victim reports the incident to the police. Analyses document uncertainty of burglary rates when comparing across cities and over time. We think it will be useful to begin reporting crime patterns in terms of a range of uncertainty that expresses both what is known and unknown about the numbers that are used to measure those patterns. Over the last decade there has been renewed interest in determining the water contents of basaltic magmas. A commonly applied method is analysis of H 2 O from melt inclusions in olivine. However, it is also well known that these can rapidly lose (or gain) H 2 O by diffusion. An alternative is to measure the H 2 O contents of clinopyroxene phenocrysts and use a partition coefficient (D) to estimate the original H 2 O content of the host magma. This approach is not without complications and several recent studies have attempted to assess the effects of diffusive loss of H 2 O from magmatic clinopyroxenes. In the ideal case, these crystals should be taken from rapidly cooled tephra or lapilli but such materials are not always available. In order to further assess the potential of using 5–10 mm clinopyroxenes from lavas we undertook a detailed, multi-analytical investigation of clinopyroxenes from an ankaramite flow on Pico Island in the Azores. We conclude that these can be trusted to preserve (probably minimum) magmatic H 2 O contents if the H 2 O concentrations of multiple clinopyroxenes from a single sample form a linear correlation with the Al IV content that demonstrates a coupled substitution with little or no H 2 O loss. Conversely, if H 2 O contents decrease from core to rim whereas Al IV contents remain relatively constant then it is likely that those clinopyroxenes lost H 2 O during differentiation and/or cooling. We suspect that the olivine melt inclusions we analysed from Pico and São Miguel Islands also underwent diffusive loss of H 2 O. Using these criteria, we present clinopyroxene-derived magmatic H 2 O estimates for Corvo, Flores Faial, Pico and São Miguel Islands that range from 0.28 to 2.2 wt%. When combined with published data these show that H 2 O contents often extend to higher values on the islands than along the adjacent mid-Atlantic ridge. These localised, elevated H 2 O contents can explain why the islands are emergent despite being situated away from the ridge and perhaps also the asymmetric nature of the bathymetry of the archipelago. One poorly constrained reservoir of the Earth's water budget is that of clinopyroxene in metasomatised, mantle peridotites. This study presents reconnaissance Sensitive High-Resolution, Ion Microprobe-Stable Isotope ( SHRIMP-SI) determinations of the H2O contents of (dominantly) clinopyroxenes in rare mantle xenoliths from four different subduction zones, i.e. Mexico, Kamchatka, Philippines, and New Britain (Tabar-Feni island chain) as well as one intra-plate setting (western Victoria). All of the sub-arc xenoliths have been metasomatised and carry strong arc trace element signatures. Average measured H2O contents of the pyroxenes range from 70 ppm to 510 ppm whereas calculated bulk H2O contents range from 88 ppm to 3 737 ppm if the variable presence of amphibole is taken into account. In contrast, the intra-plate, continental mantle xenolith from western Victoria has higher water contents (3 447 ppm) but was metasomatised by alkali and/or carbonatitic melts and does not carry a subduction-related signature. Material similar to the sub-arc peridotites can either be accreted to the base of the lithosphere or potentially be transported by convection deeper into the mantle where it will lose water due to amphibole breakdown. This article focuses on some of the religious factors that shaped the pro-Southern lobby in Britain during the American Civil War and Reconstruction. British opinion cannot be explained only in terms of class and party. In exploring other determinants, the ideas and activities of wealthy High Churchman and Conservative politician Beresford Hope offer promising avenues of inquiry, for Hope saw in the American Union, and Southern secession, a religious dimension, represented most clearly in the Episcopal Church. To the more familiar (to historians) reasons why the South gained support in Britain--relating to economic and political interests--Hope added a deeper commitment arising from a sense of cultural affinity (the "Englishness" of the South) and from religious conviction (to him the Church, and indeed Christianity, seemed stronger in the South than in the North). Recent clinical trials in patients with drug-resistant hypertension indicate that electrical activation of the carotid sinus baroreflex can reduce arterial pressure (AP) for more than a year. To examine whether the electrical stimulation from one baroreflex system impedes normal short-term AP regulation via another unstimulated baroreflex system, we electrically stimulated the left aortic depressor nerve (ADN) while estimating the dynamic characteristics of the carotid sinus baroreflex in anesthetized normotensive Wistar-Kyoto (WKY; n = 8) rats and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR; n = 7). Isolated carotid sinus regions were perturbed for 20 min using a Gaussian white noise signal with a mean of 120 mmHg for WKY and 160 mmHg for SHR. Tonic ADN stimulation (2 Hz, 10 V, and 0.1-ms pulse width) decreased mean sympathetic nerve activity (73.4 ± 14.0 vs. 51.6 ± 11.3 arbitrary units in WKY, P = 0.012; and 248.7 ± 33.9 vs. 181.1 ± 16.6 arbitrary units in SHR, P = 0.018) and mean AP (90.8 ± 6.6 vs. 81.2 ± 5.4 mmHg in WKY, P = 0.004; and 128.6 ± 9.8 vs. 114.7 ± 10.3 mmHg in SHR, P = 0.009). The slope of dynamic gain in the neural arc transfer function from carotid sinus pressure to sympathetic nerve activity was not different between trials with and without the ADN stimulation (12.55 ± 0.93 vs. 13.03 ± 1.28 dB/decade in WKY, P = 0.542; and 17.37 ± 1.01 vs. 17.47 ± 1.64 dB/decade in SHR, P = 0.946). This article presents acoustic evidence for the existence of a bilabial implosive, [ƃ], in one variety of U.S. English. One articulatory observation is that vocal chord vibration of the English bilabial stop, /b/, can only be maintained for a maximum of about 82 ms. Increasing the vibration beyond this threshold is only possible by increasing the size of the vocal cavity, which in turn is often enabled by lowering the glottis, a gesture characteristic of implosive stops. The authors compare the voiced bilabial stops of five white males from the Western United States, three of whom impressionistically appear to have implosive stops and two who do not. For each stop, a normalized stop duration was calculated based on speech tempo, the actual stop duration, and the percentage of the stop that displayed vocal fold vibration. As far as normalized stop duration is concerned, there are no significant differences between the five speakers. However, the vocal fold vibration patterns for the two nonimplosive-sounding speakers and the three implosive-sounding speakers differ a great deal. In addition to evidence for biliabial implosives, there are large differences in the percentage of stop closure that displays vocal fold vibration. Objective: To study the educational value to medical students of a labour ward rotation.Design: Qualitative research study was performed in two tertiary level obstetric hospitals attached to a large medical school in Dublin. Medical students attending a six-week rotation in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in University College Dublin were invited to participate. As part of this rotation, students spend one week as part of the clinical team working on the labour ward. Focus groups were held in order to identify common themes and experiences of medical students during this labour ward week. Grounded theory with thematic analysis was used. The main outcome measures were the educational experience and value of a labour ward rotation to medical students.Results: Five distinct themes developed from the focus groups of 19 students. A high value was placed on patient centred bedside teaching. Midwives were identified as excellent teachers and facilitators of learning. There was a clear sense of teamwork and belonging by the students. However, students reported frustration with unclear learning objectives. Students identified extra pre-learning with pre-specified learning aims before the labour ward week as being important.Conclusion: Bedside teaching was highly valued as it advanced student's knowledge of obstetrics theory and improved communication skills. Thienyl di-N-methyliminodiacetic acid (MIDA) boronate esters are readily synthesized by electrophilic C-H borylation producing bench stable crystalline solids in good yield and excellent purity. Optimal conditions for the slow release of the boronic acid using KOH as the base in biphasic THF/water mixtures enables the thienyl MIDA boronate esters to be extremely effective homo-bifunctionalized (AA-type) monomers in Suzuki-Miyaura copolymerizations with dibromo-heteroarenes (BB-type monomers). A single polymerization protocol is applicable for the formation of five alternating thienyl copolymers that are (or are close analogues of) state of the art materials used in organic electronics. The five polymers were produced in excellent yields and with high molecular weights comparable to those produced using Stille copolymerization protocols. Therefore, thienyl di-MIDA boronate esters represent bench stable and low toxicity alternatives to highly toxic di-trimethylstannyl AA-type monomers that are currently ubiquitous in the synthesis of these important alternating copolymers. Bullying is a significant public concern. The purpose of the present study is to investigate whether being repeatedly victimized by a bully during childhood and adolescence is associated with gun carrying in adolescence and adulthood. Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997, we found that just over one fourth of the respondents reported carrying a gun at some point in their lifetime. Respondents experiencing repeat bully victimizations reported higher rates of gun carrying during the last 12 months and the last 30 days. No support was found for the association of repeat bully victimizations and carrying a gun to school. Individuals victimized during childhood (before the age of 12) and during adolescence were found to be at risk of carrying a gun later in the life course. Repeat bully victimizations should be considered a marker for gun-carrying behaviors in adolescence and adulthood. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Concentrations of H2O, F, Cl, C, P, and S have been measured by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) in experimentally produced peridotite phases (including clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene, olivine, garnet, amphibole, and mica) and coexisting basanitic glasses. Because only two experiments produced glasses on quenching (with the melt phase in others reverting to felt-like crystallite masses) H2O concentrations in melts were also separately determined from mass-balance relationships and by assuming constant H2O/La in melts and starting materials. The resulting values were used to calculate mineral/melt partition coefficients (D values) for H2O [where ... = (mass fraction of H2O in crystal)/(mass fraction of H2O in melt)] for conditions of 1025-1190 °C and 1.0-3.5 GPa. These gave 0.0064-0.0164 for clinopyroxene, 0.0046-0.0142 for orthopyroxene, 0.0015-0.0016 for olivine, and 0.0016-0.0022 for garnet. Although less information was obtained for the other volatiles, F was found to be significantly more compatible than H2O during peridotite melting, whereas Cl is significantly less compatible. S also has small but appreciable solubilities in amphiboles and micas, but not in pyroxenes or olivine. The solubility of C in silicate minerals appears to be negligible, although C was present in coexisting melts (~0.5 wt% as CO2) and as residual graphite during experiments. The D values for H2O in clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene are positively correlated with ivAl but negatively correlated with the H2O concentrations of melts (when considered as wt%). These relationships are consistent with the broad trends of previously published partitioning data. Although some of the concentration dependence can be related to cross-correlation between ivAl in pyroxenes and H2O concentrations in melts (via the latter's control of liquidus temperatures) this relationship is too inconsistent to be a complete explanation. A concentration dependence for ... can also be independently predicted from speciation models for H2O in silicate melts. Thus it is likely that ... is influenced by both ivAl and the absolute concentration of H2O in melts. ... for clinopyroxene is inversely correlated with M2 site radii. Because the latter decrease with increasing pressure and temperature, relatively hot and/or deeply derived melts should be enriched in Ce relative to H2O when compared to melts from cooler and shallower mantle sources. Conversely, melts from H2O-rich settings (e.g., subduction zones) should have higher H2O/Ce than their source rocks. When combined with previously obtained partitioning data for non-volatile elements (from the same experiments), our data are consistent with the enrichment of intraplate basalt sources in both volatile and non-volatile incompatible elements by small-degree melts derived from local mid-ocean ridge basalt sources. In this way, volatiles can be seen to play an active role (via their promotion of partial-melting and metasomatic processes) in the auto-regulation of incompatible element concentrations in the depleted upper mantle. Objective: To describe the findings of a national inquiry into cases of misdiagnosis of miscarriage in the Republic of Ireland and to report the results of implementation of the findings of the inquiry, including investment in new equipment and training, new national guidelines, and rigorous annual audit of early pregnancy units.Design: Narrative description of the inquiry and its findings and results of a subsequent audit.Setting: Not applicable.Patient(s): Women with problems of bleeding and/or pain in early pregnancy who were erroneously diagnosed as having a nonviable intrauterine pregnancy.Intervention(s): After two cases of misdiagnosis of miscarriage that were widely reported in the Republic of Ireland in June 2010, a Miscarriage Misdiagnosis Review Team was commissioned by the Irish Health Service Executive (HSE) to undertake a national review of other possible cases of misdiagnosis of miscarriage. The Review Team made a series of recommendations that were subsequently implemented in full. The results of the implementation of the findings of the Review Team have been the subject of three annual audits across the country.Main Outcome Measure(s): The main outcome measure was the occurrence of misdiagnosis of miscarriage in the Republic of Ireland before and after implementation of the findings of the Review Team.Result(s): Twenty-four confirmed cases of misdiagnosis of miscarriage were identified, mostly occurring between 2005 and 2010. Analysis led to a series of recommendations by the Review Team, which were implemented in full by the HSE. Over € 3 million was provided to fund implementation; 26 high-quality gynecological ultrasound machines were purchased to reequip 19 units involved in provision of care to women with suspected miscarriage. There was further allocation of resources for new equipment and improvement in the management and staffing of early pregnancy units across Ireland, with each center now having a dedicated and properly staffed Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit. A national training program in the management of early pregnancy problems has been implemented, along with regular national meetings to discuss early pregnancy problems. National clinical guidelines on the diagnosis and management of miscarriage for implementation have been distributed to all hospitals.Conclusion(s): No cases of miscarriage misdiagnosis were identified in any of the three annual audits, suggesting that implementation of the findings of the review has been successful.
