4. Opening the Classroom Door--A Survey of Middle Grades Teachers Who Mentor Preservice Teachers--Lessons from Clinical Partnerships and Implications for Practice

Abstract

Middle school mentor teachers who participate in school-university clinical experiences have a unique opportunity to support preservice middle grades teachers' development and improve the schooling of young adolescents. This article investigates an early clinical experience and presents data from a survey of 38 middle school teachers who served as mentor teachers. Findings address how middle grades teachers view their role as mentors, their perceptions of the clinical experience as a collaborative learning partnership, and concludes with suggestions to improve clinical experiences for preservice middle grades teacher candidates.

7. Perceptions of Black Student Athletes about Academic Mentorship at a Predominantly White Institution in Higher Education

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate and describe the mentorship experiences of Black student athletes attending undergraduate programs at a Predominantly White Institution in Higher Education (PWI-HE). The research site for this study was a co-educational public research institution (PWI-HE) with an approximate enrollment of 45,000 students. A total of six Black student athletes (five African American and one Jamaican) agreed to participate in this study. Four major interrelated and complex themes emerged from the data analyses. These themes were: (a) "mentoring study habits and routines," (b) "mentoring academic schedule and time management," (c) "personal development within an isolated environment," and (d) "family members' support and encouragements." To better support Black student athletes at PWI-HEs, athletic department administrators, coaches, faculty, and all students should be encouraged to respect, value, and embrace the racial identities, origins, languages, and cultures of the student athletes that are being mentored.

Abstract

The concept of organisational culture has been the subject of considerable debate within the literature on corporate culture and organisational behaviour. Central to the issue is whether or not managers can create, manage and change culture in the workplace. Some commentators are clear that it is within the sphere of management control; others are equally clear that it is not; others support the idea that managers can influence the dominant culture within their organisation. Organisational culture has become closely associated with the concurrent development of the models of human resource management (HRM). Employee commitment is frequently a stated aim and aspiration for both corporate culture initiatives and HRM practices, both seeking to affect employee behaviour at work. This research investigates how culture within the workplace affects the behaviour of service industry employees and their intentions regarding whether or not to leave their job.

45. Creating an Assessment-Centered Classroom: Five Essential Assessment Strategies to Support Middle Grades Student Learning and Achievement

Abstract

The focus on grades and what they represent happens in every middle grades classroom--some students completely understand the concepts when reviewed, but perform poorly on the quiz; some gifted students score high on tests but appear bored in class. With the current emphasis on school accountability by standardized test scores, middle level teachers find they must consistently adjust their instruction in ways that highlight the relationship between learning and assessment (Anfara, 2009; Faulkner & Cook, 2006). All middle grades teachers consistently face the challenge of assessing student work and equitably translating student thinking into a grade (Tovani, 2011), yet effective assessment is not limited to a single quiz or a test at the end of a unit. Teachers and researchers have shared evidence that there is a direct, positive effect on student learning by assessing students throughout the learning process, rather than merely at its conclusion (Larsen, Butler, & Roediger, 2009; Roediger & Karpicke, 2006). Formative, ongoing assessment helps identify how student knowledge and understanding is developing, while traditional, summative assessment yields information about what learners may know at a particular point in time. Since both measures provide useful data that can guide instruction, what systematic assessment strategies can middle grades teachers use that allow learners to show what they know and understand throughout instruction? This article presents PILOT, a classroom assessment strategy that highlights five essential elements of instruction that can support student achievement.
