1. Framing Unpacked: A Semi-Supervised Interpretable Multi-View Model of Media Frames

Abstract

Understanding how news media frame political issues is important due to its impact on public attitudes, yet hard to automate. Computational approaches have largely focused on classifying the frame of a full news article while framing signals are often subtle and local. Furthermore, automatic news analysis is a sensitive domain, and existing classifiers lack transparency in their predictions. This paper addresses both issues with a novel semi-supervised model, which jointly learns to embed local information about the events and related actors in a news article through an auto-encoding framework, and to leverage this signal for document-level frame classification. Our experiments show that: our model outperforms previous models of frame prediction; we can further improve performance with unlabeled training data leveraging the semi-supervised nature of our model; and the learnt event and actor embeddings intuitively corroborate the document-level predictions, providing a nuanced and interpretable article frame representation., Comment: Accepted at NAACL 2021

6. Large-Scale Pattern Search Using Reduced-Space On-Disk Suffix Arrays

Abstract

The suffix array is an efficient data structure for in-memory pattern search. Suffix arrays can also be used for external-memory pattern search, via two-level structures that use an internal index to identify the correct block of suffix pointers. In this paper we describe a new two-level suffix array-based index structure that requires significantly less disk space than previous approaches. Key to the saving is the use of disk blocks that are based on prefixes rather than the more usual uniform-sampling approach, allowing reductions between blocks and subparts of other blocks. We also describe a new in-memory structure based on a condensed BWT string, and show that it allows common patterns to be resolved without access to the text. Experiments using 64 GB of English web text and a laptop computer with just 4 GB of main memory demonstrate the speed and versatility of the new approach. For this data the index is around one- third the size of previous two-level mechanisms; and the memory footprint of as little as 1% of the text size means that queries can be processed more quickly than is possible with a compact FM-INDEX.

Abstract

We show how to use a balanced wavelet tree as a data structure that stores a list of numbers and supports efficient {\em range quantile queries}. A range quantile query takes a rank and the endpoints of a sublist and returns the number with that rank in that sublist. For example, if the rank is half the sublist's length, then the query returns the sublist's median. We also show how these queries can be used to support space-efficient {\em coloured range reporting} and {\em document listing}., Comment: Added note about generalization to any constant number of dimensions.

Abstract

Detecting deterioration of visual field sensitivity measurements is important for the diagnosis and management of glaucoma. This review surveys the current methods for assessing progression that are implemented in clinical devices, which have been used in clinical trials, alongside more recent advances proposed in the literature. Advice is also offered to clinicians on what they can do to improve the collection of perimetric data to help analytical progression methods more accurately predict change. This advice includes a discussion of how frequently visual field testing should be undertaken, with a view towards future developments, such as digital healthcare outside the standard clinical setting and more personalised approaches to perimetry.
