18. A Follow-Up Study of Graduates' and Employers' Opinions of a Cooperating Training Program. Research Study No. 1.

Abstract

Interviews collected information from 135 graduates of the trades and industrial cooperative education training program, and 30 employers in Des Moines, Iowa, to appraise the effectiveness of training in relation to post high school employment. Graduates and employers commented on the value of core area training, school counseling, and different phases of the training program. It was found that the primary reasons for enrolling in the program were to gain work experience and earn extra money. Personal feeling and family influenced choice of core area. Sixty-two percent of the graduates were working at, or in, areas related to their high school training. Satisfaction was expressed with training, present job, and the school counseling and coordinating service. Employers felt training helped graduates secure employment and receive promotions. Graduates felt core area training could be improved by more production training and wider experience on shop equipment, while employers thought additional training in production work, business ethics, and employment procedures should be included in the core area training. Abstract

Alternatives to petroleum-based fuels for transportation are sought to address concerns over climate change and energy security. Key semiconductor, software, and battery technologies have sufficiently progressed over the past few decades to enable a mass-market-viable plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) alternative. In this paper, the various PEV architectures are described, including market availability, technologies and trends, practical ranges, battery replacement and power costs, implications for grid operations, and other developments. Manufacturers’ recently announced prices and EPA standardized test data are used (where available) to increase the accuracy of cost comparisons for competing vehicles. Results indicate that in relatively low fuel-cost regions, like the U.S., PEVs enjoy a positive discounted net present value, thanks to tax credits and assuming that the original battery does not need replacement by the owner. Even without the tax credits, PEVs offer financial payback for those residing in higher fuel-cost regions, as long as their batteries last the vehicle’s lifetime or are replaced by manufacturers (under warranty).

Abstract

The differential diagnosis of eyelid erythema and edema is broad, ranging from benign, self-limiting dermatoses to malignant tumors and vision-threatening infections. A definitive diagnosis usually can be made on physical examination of the eyelid and a careful evaluation of symptoms and exposures. The finding of a swollen red eyelid often signals cellulitis. Orbital cellulitis is a severe infection presenting with proptosis and ophthalmoplegia; it requires hospitalization and intravenous antibiotics to prevent vision loss. Less serious conditions, such as contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, and blepharitis, are more common causes of eyelid erythema and edema. These less serious conditions can often be managed with topical corticosteroids and proper eyelid hygiene. They are differentiated on the basis of such clinical clues as time course, presence or absence of irritative symptoms, scaling, and other skin findings. Discrete lid lesions are also important diagnostic indicators. The finding of vesicles, erosions, or crusting may signal a herpes infection. Benign, self-limited eyelid nodules such as hordeola and chalazia often respond to warm compresses, whereas malignancies require surgical excision. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This report describes the evolution of the air traffic control system facilities in the pre-1990 time period as major system improvements currently being developed by the FAA are implemented. The description was prepared to assist FAA managers with the technical planning for the future air traffic control system. The description covers eight major domestic ATC facilities classifications: En Route, TRACON, Tower, ATC Command Center, Flight Service Stations, Surveillance, Navigation, and Communications. The report provides a summary description of each improvement currently being planned, describes the information flow between ATC facilities to support the improvement, and provides tentative implementation dates for each improvement. Where system configuration questions were encountered, an assumption about the final course of action was made and duly noted. These system integration issues identify questions that the FAA will be addressing prior to reaching implementation decisions and are reported more completely in another FAA document. (Author)

Abstract

Key battery, semiconductor, and software technologies have sufficiently progressed over the past few decades to enable viable plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) alternatives to conventional vehicles. Alternatives to petroleum-based fuels for transportation are sought to address concerns over energy security, foreign oil derived U.S. trade deficits, oil related geopolitical entanglements, and emissions. The various types of PEVs have substantially different characteristics. The types and key attributes of PEVs, charging standards, and charging locations are described. The likely scenario for PEV-Grid interactions over the next decade is synthesized from the analysis of the technologies available to and circumstances of vehicle manufacturers, utilities, and supplier firms. PEV adoption considerations are evolving. Many lessons have been learned from the first generation of PEVs that were introduced starting in late 2010. Technology, market, and policy drivers of emerging trends in the diffusion of PEVs are explored more in-depth. PEVs as electric loads are unique in that they are large, flexible, and intelligent. These attributes can not only provide utilities a new source of revenue, but also improve grid stability and economics. Actions, technologies, and policies that utilities can deploy to increase adoption are discussed. Actions are explored to make the overall PEV ownership experience superior to a conventional vehicle. This dissertation also describes research of the capability for PEVs in Vehicle to Home (V2H) scenarios, where the vehicle acts as a residential battery storage system and/or a backup generator in a residential microgrid configuration during a grid outage. Residential energy data collected from a smart grid testbed is used with a custom PEV model to assess the performance (in terms of duration and power output) of a BEV or PHEV used for backup power. Our earlier results quantify the extent to which photovoltaic (PV) generation and the characteristics of a PEV (battery size, gasoline availability) affect the backup duration during an electric grid outage. Strategies to further increase backup duration and non-continuous self-sustaining off-grid alternatives were found in our early V2H research. Varied amounts of load curtailment and PHEV engine-generator control improvements are modeled in subsequent research.

Abstract

Abstract: There has been a flurry of activity to develop agonists and antagonists for the member of the opioid receptor family, NOP receptor (also known as ORL1), in part to understand its role in pain. Modifications of a hexapeptide originally identified from a combinatorial library have led to the discovery of a high affinity hexapeptide agonist Ac-RY(3-Cl)YRWR-NH2 (Syn 1020). In the following experiments we characterized the anti-nociceptive effects of Syn 1020 in the tail-flick model of acute pain and the diabetic neuropathy model of chronic pain in mice and rats, respectively. Acute antinociception was assessed using the tail-flick assay in mice in which animals received intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) or subcutaneous (s.c.) injections of Syn 1020 alone or with morphine and were tested for tail-flick latencies. In the chronic pain model, diabetic neuropathy was induced by injections of streptozotocin in rats. Tactile allodynia was measured, with von Frey hair filaments, following intraperitoneal (i.p.) injections of Syn 1020 or gabapentin (positive control). In mice, i.c.v. injections of Syn 1020 did not have any pro- or anti-nociceptive effects, however, Syn 1020 reversed morphine antinociception with a similar potency as N/OFQ (the natural ligand to NOP). S.c. injections of Syn 1020 in mice also produced analgesic effects. In rats, i.p, injections of Syn 1020 produced anti-allodynic effects. Thus, Syn 1020, a NOP receptor directed peptide, administered systemically has anti-nociceptive activity in both acute and chronic pain models in mice and rats respectively. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Objective: MRI is a well-established modality for evaluating congenital and acquired cardiac diseases. This article reviews the latest pulse sequences used for cardiac MRI. In addition, the standard cardiac imaging planes and corresponding anatomy are described and illustrated., Conclusion: Familiarity with the basic pulse sequences, imaging planes, and anatomy pertaining to cardiac MRI is essential to formulate optimal protocols and interpretations.
