We present here the current state of a collection of promising ultraviolet technologies in preparation for the Habitable Worlds Observatory. Working with experts representing a significant number of groups working in the ultraviolet, we summarize some of the leading science drivers, present an argument for a 100 nm blue wavelength cutoff, and gather current state of the art of UV technologies. We present the state of the art of contamination control, a crucial piece of the UV instrument plan. We explore next steps with individual technologies, as well as present paths forward with systems level testing and development.

NASA's Great Observatories Maturation Program (GOMAP) will advance the science definition, technology, and workforce needed for the Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO) with the goal of a Phase A start by the end of the current decade. GOMAP offers long-term cost and schedule savings compared to the 'TRL 6 by Preliminary Design Review' paradigm historically adopted by large NASA missions. Many of the key technologies in the development queue for HWO require the combined activities of 1) facility and process development for validation of technologies at the scale required for HWO and 2) deployment in the 'real world' environment of mission Integration & Test prior to on-orbit operations. We present a concept for the Smallsat Technology Accelerated Maturation Platform (STAMP), an integrated facility, laboratory, and instrument prototype development program that could be supported through the GOMAP framework and applied to any of NASA's Future Great Observatories (FGOs). This brief describes the recommendation for the first entrant into this program, "STAMP-1", an ESPA Grande-class mission advancing key technologies to enable the ultraviolet capabilities of HWO. STAMP-1 would advance new broadband optical coatings, high-sensitivity ultraviolet detector systems, and multi-object target selection technology to TRL 6 with a flight demonstration. STAMP-1 advances HWO technology on an accelerated timescale, building on current ROSES SAT+APRA programs, reducing cost and schedule risk for HWO while conducting a compelling program of preparatory science and workforce development with direct benefits for HWO mission implementation in the 2030s., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure. Al$_x$Ga$_{1-x}$N materials have become increasingly important for electronics in radiation environments due to their robust properties. In this work, we aim to investigate the atomistic mechanisms of radiation-induced damage in AlGaN compounds, providing insights that bridge the gap between high-length-scale experimental data and detailed atomic-level processes. Through extensive molecular dynamics simulations, we reveal the compositional dependence of radiation-induced defect production in Al$_x$Ga$_{1-x}$N systems with $x$ ranging from 0 to 1. The damage accumulation characteristics observed in our simulations align notably well with available experimental data at temperatures up to room temperature. Our findings indicate that alloy composition significantly influences defect production and microstructural evolution, including the formation of dislocation loops and defect clusters. Specifically, with increasing Al content, defect production from individual recoil events is reduced; however, extended interstitial defects are more likely to form considering cumulative effects, leading to enhanced damage at high doses. Among the compositions studied, we find that 25\% Al content leads to the least overall radiation damage, suggesting an optimal alloying strategy for mitigating radiation effects. The AAS Strategic Plan for 2021-26 called for the creation of a task force to identify how the AAS can meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. The AAS and its membership recognize the danger climate change represents to humanity and our world, and to astronomy -- as a profession, a hobby, and a cultural good. Our profession in general -- and the AAS in particular -- should work to make it possible for all astronomers to have an equal opportunity to be successful without needing to incur high carbon emissions, and to preserve astronomy for future generations. A study was completed of the carbon emissions associated with the AAS, finding that 84% of total AAS-related emissions are from in-person conferences. We also conducted a survey of AAS members to determine their attitudes about climate change. Respondents overwhelmingly (97%) think that the AAS should reduce its carbon footprint. Our task force created a list of fourteen recommendations, with two ranked as top priorities: The AAS should not schedule additional in-person meetings before 2030 and it should work to innovate the AAS conference model. Based upon our analysis it is clear that online interaction is the only way to increase participation while meaningfully decreasing emissions. Our recommendations are aligned with the Astro2020 Decadal Survey as well as AAS values to disseminate our scientific understanding of the universe, and to do our work in an ethically responsible way. Because of their other benefits -- particularly in making our society more welcoming to those who traditionally have been excluded -- we feel that these are sound decisions, worthy of implementation even if the AAS wasn't trying to reduce its carbon footprint. They simply make sense as steps towards a professional society that better serves a broader membership, as our profession evolves to be greener, more inclusive, and more productive., Comment: 46 pages

By combining newly obtained deep GBT 21cm observations with optical spectroscopic data, we present an analysis of the gas content of BreakBRD galaxies, a population denoted by their blue star-forming centers and red quenched disks that do not appear to follow the typical inside-out evolution of spiral galaxies. We confirm previous results that the neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) gas fractions of BreakBRDs are on-average lower than those of typical galaxies on the star-forming sequence (SFS), and find that their \ion{H}{1} fractions are generally higher than Green Valley (GV) galaxies. HI depletion times for BreakBRDs are roughly an order of magnitude lower than those of SFS galaxies, in stark contrast with GV galaxies that typically have much longer depletion times than SFS galaxies. The nuclear gas-phase metallicities of BreakBRDs have a broader distribution than SFS galaxies and are skewed towards slightly above-average values. BreakBRDs are systematically offset from the Baryonic Tully-Fisher Relation towards lower baryonic mass at a given rotation velocity. They also have higher typical HI asymmetries than SFS galaxies, and of those galaxies with spatially resolved gas velocity fields from the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey, two-thirds are either highly distorted or completely misaligned relative to the stellar disk. Evidence supports a scenario where BreakBRDs are in an early phase of quenching, and there is mixed evidence that their behavior is related to past merger activity., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, 1 table. Fine-tuning large pre-trained language models for downstream tasks remains a critical challenge in natural language processing. This paper presents an empirical analysis comparing two efficient fine-tuning methods - BitFit and adapter modules - to standard full model fine-tuning. Experiments conducted on GLUE benchmark datasets (MRPC, COLA, STS-B) reveal several key insights. The BitFit approach, which trains only bias terms and task heads, matches full fine-tuning performance across varying amounts of training data and time constraints. It demonstrates remarkable stability even with only 30\% of data, outperforming full fine-tuning at intermediate data levels. Adapter modules exhibit high variability, with inconsistent gains over default models. The findings indicate BitFit offers an attractive balance between performance and parameter efficiency. Our work provides valuable perspectives on model tuning, emphasizing robustness and highlighting BitFit as a promising alternative for resource-constrained or streaming task settings. The analysis offers actionable guidelines for efficient adaptation of large pre-trained models, while illustrating open challenges in stabilizing techniques like adapter modules.

In this article, we present a construction of a spanner on a set of $n$ points in $\mathbf{R}^d$ that we call a heavy path WSPD spanner. The construction is parameterized by a constant $s > 2$ called the separation ratio. The size of the graph is $O(s^dn)$ and the spanning ratio is at most $1 + 2/s + 2/(s - 1)$. We also show that this graph has a hop spanning ratio of at most $2\lg n + 1$. We present a memoryless local routing algorithm for heavy path WSPD spanners. The routing algorithm requires a vertex $v$ of the graph to store $O(\mathrm{deg}(v)\log n)$ bits of information, where $\mathrm{deg}(v)$ is the degree of $v$. The routing ratio is at most $1 + 4/s + 1/(s - 1)$ and at least $1 + 4/s$ in the worst case. The number of edges on the routing path is bounded by $2\lg n + 1$. We then show that the heavy path WSPD spanner can be constructed in metric spaces of bounded doubling dimension. These metric spaces have been studied in computational geometry as a generalization of Euclidean space. We show that, in a metric space with doubling dimension $\lambda$, the heavy path WSPD spanner has size $O(s^\lambda n)$ where $s$ is the separation ratio. The spanning ratio and hop spanning ratio are the same as in the Euclidean case. Finally, we show that the local routing algorithm works in the bounded doubling dimension case. The vertices require the same amount of storage, but the routing ratio becomes at most $1 + (2 + \frac{\tau}{\tau-1})/s + 1/(s - 1)$ in the worst case, where $\tau \ge 11$ is a constant related to the doubling dimension.

HELIX is a new NASA-sponsored instrument aimed at measuring the spectra and composition of light cosmic-ray isotopes from hydrogen to neon nuclei, in particular the clock isotopes 10Be (radioactive, with 1.4 Myr lifetime) and 9Be (stable). The latter are unique markers of the production and Galactic propagation of secondary cosmic-ray nuclei, and are needed to resolve such important mysteries as the proportion of secondary positrons in the excess of antimatter observed by the AMS-02 experiment. By using a combination of a 1 T superconducting magnet spectrometer (with drift-chamber tracker) with a high-resolution time-of-flight detector system and ring-imaging Cherenkov detector, mass-resolved isotope measurements of light cosmic-ray nuclei will be possible up to 3 GeV/n in a first stratospheric balloon flight from Kiruna, Sweden to northern Canada, anticipated to take place in early summer 2024. An eventual longer Antarctic balloon flight of HELIX will yield measurements up to 10 GeV/n, sampling production from a larger volume of the Galaxy extending into the halo. Supernova (SN) 2023ixf was discovered on May 19th, 2023. The host galaxy, M101, was observed by the Hobby Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX) collaboration over the period April 30, 2020 -- July 10, 2020, using the Visible Integral-field Replicable Unit Spectrograph (VIRUS; $3470\lesssim\lambda\lesssim5540$ \r{A}) on the 10-m Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET). The fiber filling factor within $\pm$ 30 arcsec of SN 2023ixf is 80% with a spatial resolution of 1 arcsec. The r<5.5 arcsec surroundings are 100% covered. This allows us to analyze the spatially resolved pre-explosion local environments of SN 2023ixf with nebular emission lines. The 2-dimensional (2D) maps of the extinction and the star-formation rate (SFR) surface density ($\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$) show weak increasing trends in the radial distributions within the r<5.5 arcsec regions, suggesting lower values of extinction and SFR in the vicinity of the progenitor of SN 2023ixf. The median extinction and that of the surface density of SFR within r<3 arcsec are $E(B-V)=0.06\pm0.14$, and $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}=10^{-5.44\pm0.66}~\rm M_{\odot}\cdot yr^{-1}\cdot arcsec^{-2}$. There is no significant change in extinction before and after the explosion. The gas metallicity does not change significantly with the separation from SN 2023ixf. The metal-rich branch of the $R_{23}$ calculations indicates that the gas metallicity around SN 2023ixf is similar to the solar metallicity ($\sim Z_{\odot}$). The archival deep images from the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHTLS) show a clear detection of the progenitor of SN 2023ixf in the $z$-band at $22.778\pm0.063$ mag, but non-detections in the remaining four bands of CFHTLS ($u,g,r,i$). Observed breakBRD ("break bulges in red disks") galaxies are a nearby sample of face-on disk galaxies with particularly centrally-concentrated star formation: they have red disks but recent star formation in their centers as measured by the D$_n$4000 spectral index. In Kopenhafer et al. (2020), a comparable population of breakBRD analogues was identified in the TNG simulation, in which the central concentration of star formation was found to reflect a central concentration of dense, starforming gas caused by a lack of dense gas in the galaxy outskirts. In this paper we examine the circumgalactic medium of the central breakBRD analogues to determine if the extended halo gas also shows differences from that around comparison galaxies with comparable stellar mass. We examine the circumgalactic medium gas mass, specific angular momentum, and metallicity in these galaxy populations. We find less gas in the circumgalactic medium of breakBRD galaxies, and that the breakBRD circumgalactic medium is slightly more concentrated than that of comparable stellar mass galaxies. In addition, we find that the angular momentum in the circumgalactic medium of breakBRD galaxies tends to be low for their stellar mass, and show more misalignment to the angular momentum vector of the stellar disk. Finally, we find that the circumgalactic medium metallicity of breakBRD galaxies tends to be high for their stellar mass. Together with their low SFR, we argue that these CGM properties indicate a small amount of disk feeding concentrated in the central regions, and a lack of low-metallicity gas accretion from the intergalactic medium., Comment: Published in The Astrophysical Journal, July 2023

We describe the ensemble properties of the $1.9 < z < 3.5$ Lyman Alpha Emitters (LAEs) found in the HETDEX survey's first public data release, HETDEX Public Source Catalog 1 (Mentuch Cooper et al. 2023). Stacking the low-resolution ($R \sim$ 800) spectra greatly increases the signal-to-noise ratio, revealing spectral features otherwise hidden by noise, and we show that the stacked spectrum is representative of an average member of the set. The flux limited, Ly$\alpha$ signal-to-noise ratio restricted stack of 50K HETDEX LAEs shows the ensemble biweight ``average" $z \sim 2.6$ LAE to be a blue (UV continuum slope $\sim -2.4$ and E(B-V) $< 0.1$), moderately bright (M$_{\text{UV}} \sim -19.7$) star forming galaxy with strong Ly$\alpha$ emission (log $L_{Ly\alpha}$ $\sim$ 42.8 and $W_{\lambda}$(Ly$\alpha$) $\sim$ 114\AA), and potentially significant leakage of ionizing radiation. Several algorithms for learning the structure of dynamic Bayesian networks (DBNs) require an a priori ordering of variables, which influences the determined graph topology. However, it is often unclear how to determine this order if feature importance is unknown, especially as an exhaustive search is usually impractical. In this paper, we introduce Ranking Approaches for Unknown Structures (RAUS), an automated framework to systematically inform variable ordering and learn networks end-to-end. RAUS leverages existing statistical methods (Cramers V, chi-squared test, and information gain) to compare variable ordering, resultant generated network topologies, and DBN performance. RAUS enables end-users with limited DBN expertise to implement models via command line interface. We evaluate RAUS on the task of predicting impending acute kidney injury (AKI) from inpatient clinical laboratory data. Longitudinal observations from 67,460 patients were collected from our electronic health record (EHR) and Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) criteria were then applied to define AKI events. RAUS learns multiple DBNs simultaneously to predict a future AKI event at different time points (i.e., 24-, 48-, 72-hours in advance of AKI). We also compared the results of the learned AKI prediction models and variable orderings to baseline techniques (logistic regression, random forests, and extreme gradient boosting). The DBNs generated by RAUS achieved 73-83% area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUCROC) within 24-hours before AKI; and 71-79% AUCROC within 48-hours before AKI of any stage in a 7-day observation window. Insights from this automated framework can help efficiently implement and interpret DBNs for clinical decision support.
