School connectedness is associated with a broad range of positive academic and mental health outcomes. A dimension of school connectedness, student-teacher connectedness, is related to improved academic progress and may be an important protective factor against risk-taking behaviors, particularly for low-income students and for those with limited parental support. The purpose of this qualitative secondary data analysis was to explore teacher perceptions of parental involvement in a low-income, rural middle school serving a diverse student population and the influence on student-teacher connectedness. Data were taken from transcripts from five focus groups comprised of middle school teachers, administrators, and clinicians (n = 26). Thematic analysis included first and second cycle coding followed by developing Venn diagrams to depict categories and patterns before reaching consensus on themes. Three themes were identified: (1) parental support of students; (2) parental modeling for students; and (3) parental interaction with teachers. Overall, teachers perceived a lack of parental involvement in this low-income diverse middle school which led to missed connections between students and teachers. This disconnect may be the result of multiple factors, including perceived low levels of parental support for students, differing expectations between parents and teachers, and perceived poor quality interactions between parents and teachers. When formulating strategies to enhance student--teacher connectedness, consideration should be given to the extent and importance of the role of parental involvement.

Increased neck strength has been linked to a potential decrease in traumatic brain injuries (TBI). The purpose was to determine the efficacy of a neck-strengthening protocol using a novel neck-strengthening device to increase isometric neck strength and rate of force development (RFD). Utilizing self-generated centripetal force, participants trained for 14 weeks. A linear mixed model was used to analyze the relationship between post-assessment measurements and pre-assessments measurements, while accounting for repeated measure random effect at the individual level, and a regular random error term. RFD values were 4.344 times higher in the clockwise direction and 5.978 times higher in the counterclockwise direction when comparing pre and post assessment measurements. Abstract Background An increased risk of diabetes mellitus (DM) after COVID-19 has been reported in the United States, Europe, and Asia. The burden of COVID-related DM has yet to be described in Africa, where the overall risk of DM has been increasing rapidly. Our objective was to compare the prevalence of pre-DM and DM in Nigerian individuals with a history of COVID-19 to individuals without known COVID-19 infection. Methods We undertook a retrospective cohort study with 256 individuals with a past medical history of COVID-19 with no history of pre-DM or DM and 256 individuals without a history of COVID-19 or pre-DM/DM. Participants were categorized as pre-DM (fasting capillary glucose 100–125 mg/dL) or DM (fasting capillary glucose ≥ 126 mg/dL). We employed univariate and multivariable logistic regression to identify key predictors and adjust for confounders related to hyperglycaemia risk factors. Additionally, we used multinomial logistic regression to analyze the relationship between COVID-19 history and diabetes status, distinguishing between normal, pre-diabetic, and diabetic glucose levels. All models were adjusted for age, gender, hypertension, physical activity, central adiposity, and family history of DM. Results Compared to the control group, those with a history of COVID-19 had a similar median age (38 vs. 40 years, p = 0.84), had a higher proportion of men (63% vs. 49%), and had a lower prevalence of central adiposity (waist: hip ratio ≥ 0.90 for males and WHR ≥ 0.85 for females) (48% vs. 56.3%, p = 0.06). Of the 256 with a history of COVID-19, 44 (17%) required in-patient care. The median (interquartile range) time interval between COVID-19 diagnosis and the glycaemic assessment was 19 (IQR: 14, 24) months. Pre-DM prevalence was 27% in the post-COVID-19 group and 4% in the control group, whereas the prevalence of DM was 7% in the post-COVID-19 group and 2% in the control group. Abstract Background While several studies in cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) focus on cognitive function, data on neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) and lifelong mental activities in these patients are scarce. Since NPS are associated with functional impairment, faster cognitive decline and faster progression to death, replication studies in more diverse settings and samples are warranted. Methods We prospectively recruited n = 69 CAA patients and n = 18 cognitively normal controls (NC). The number and severity of NPS were assessed using the Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) Assessment Scale’s (ADAS) noncognitive subscale. We applied different regression models exploring associations between NPS number or severity and group status (CAA vs. NC), CAA severity assessed with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or cognitive function (Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), ADAS cognitive subscale), adjusting for age, sex, years of education, arterial hypertension, AD pathology, and apolipoprotein E status. Mediation analyses were performed to test indirect effects of lifelong mental activities on CAA severity and NPS. Results Patients with CAA had 4.86 times (95% CI 2.20-10.73) more NPS and 3.56 units (95% CI 1.94–5.19) higher expected NPS severity than NC. Higher total CAA severity on MRI predicted 1.14 times (95% CI 1.01.-1.27) more NPS and 0.57 units (95% CI 0.19–0.95) higher expected NPS severity. More severe white matter hyperintensities were associated with 1.21 times more NPS (95% CI 1.05–1.39) and 0.63 units (95% CI 0.19–1.08) more severe NPS. NPS number (MMSE mean difference − 1.15, 95% CI -1.67 to -0.63; ADAS cognitive mean difference 1.91, 95% CI 1.26–2.56) and severity (MMSE − 0.55, 95% CI -0.80 to -0.30; ADAS cognitive mean difference 0.89, 95% CI 0.57–1.21) predicted lower cognitive function. Greater lifelong mental activities partially mediated the relationship between CAA severity and NPS (indirect effect 0.05, 95% CI 0.0007-0.13), and greater lifelong mental activities led to less pronounced CAA severity and thus to less NPS (indirect effect − 0.08, 95% CI -0.22 to -0.002). Discussion This study suggests that NPS are common in CAA, and that this relationship may be driven by CAA severity. Furthermore, NPS seem to be tied to lower cognitive function. However, lifelong mental activities might mitigate the impact of NPS in CAA.

Abstract Introduction Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a common surgical procedure that aims to relieve pain, improve function, and increase mobility in patients with hip joint pathology. One of the most challenging aspects of THA is to determine the correct angle of the acetabular component’s placement. Intraoperative inclinometers have emerged as a promising tool to obtain accurate measurements of the acetabular component’s inclination. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the accuracy and efficacy of using intraoperative inclinometers for THA. Methods This non-randomized control trial evaluated patients undergoing primary THA. Patients in the inclinometer group had an inclinometer used intraoperatively to measure acetabular component inclination, and patients in the control group had no inclinometer. Inclination and anteversion of the acetabular component were measured on postoperative radiographs. Results A total of 223 patients were included in the study. Atmospheric simulation chambers continue to be indispensable tools for research in the atmospheric sciences. Insights from chamber studies are integrated into atmospheric chemical transport models, which are used for science-informed policy decisions. However, a centralized data management and access infrastructure for their scientific products had not been available in the United States and many parts of the world. ICARUS (Integrated Chamber Atmospheric data Repository for Unified Science) is an open access, searchable, web-based infrastructure for storing, sharing, discovering, and utilizing atmospheric chamber data [https://icarus.ucdavis.edu]. ICARUS has two parts: a data intake portal and a search and discovery portal. Data in ICARUS are curated, uniform, interactive, indexed on popular search engines, mirrored by other repositories, version-tracked, vocabulary-controlled, and citable. ICARUS hosts both legacy data and new data in compliance with open access data mandates. Targeted data discovery is available based on key experimental parameters, including organic reactants and mixtures that are managed using the PubChem chemical database, oxidant information, nitrogen oxide (NOx) content, alkylperoxy radical (RO2) fate, seed particle information, environmental conditions, and reaction categories. A discipline-specific repository such as ICARUS with high amounts of metadata works to support the evaluation and revision of atmospheric model mechanisms, intercomparison of data and models, and the development of new model frameworks that can have more predictive power in the current and future atmosphere. The open accessibility and interactive nature of ICARUS data may also be useful for teaching, data mining, and training machine learning models.

Abstract Background Frailty reduction and reversal have been addressed successfully among older populations within community settings. However, these findings may not be applicable to residential care settings, largely due to the complex and multidimensional nature of the condition. Relatively, few attempts at frailty prevention exist in residential settings. This review aims to identify and describe best practice models of care for addressing frailty among older populations in residential care settings. This research also sets out to explore the impact of multidisciplinary health service delivery models on health outcomes such as mortality, hospitalisations, quality of life, falls and frailty. Methods A scoping review of the literature was conducted to address the project objectives. Reference lists of included studies, bibliographic databases and the grey literature were systematically searched for literature reporting multidisciplinary, multidimensional models of care for frailty. Results The scoping review found no interventions that met the inclusion criteria. Of the 704 articles screened, 664 were excluded as not relevant. Forty articles were fully assessed, and while no eligible studies were found, relevant data were extracted from 10 near-eligible studies that reported single disciplines or single dimensions rather than a model of care. The physical, nutritional, medicinal, social and cognitive aspects of the near eligible studies have been discussed as playing a key role in frailty reduction or prevention care models. Conclusion This review has identified a paucity of interventions for addressing and reducing frailty in residential care settings. High-quality studies investigating novel models of care for addressing frailty in residential care facilities are required to address this knowledge gap. Similarly, there is a need to develop and validate appropriate screening and assessment tools for frailty in residential care populations. Health service providers and policy-makers should also increase their awareness of frailty as a dynamic and reversible condition. While age is a non-modifiable predictor of frailty, addressing modifiable factors through comprehensive care models may help manage and prevent the physical, social and financial impacts of frailty in the ageing population.

Abstract Silicon photonic integrated circuit foundries enable wafer-level fabrication of entire electro-optic systems-on-a-chip for applications ranging from datacommunication to lidar to chemical sensing. However, silicon’s indirect bandgap has so far prevented its use as an on-chip optical source for these systems. Here, we describe a fullyintegrated broadband silicon waveguide light source fabricated in a state-of-the-art 300-mm foundry. A reverse-biased p-i-n diode in a silicon waveguide emits broadband near-infrared optical radiation directly into the waveguide mode, resulting in nanowatts of guided optical power from a few milliamps of electrical current. We develop a one-dimensional Planck radiation model for intraband emission from hot carriers to theoretically describe the emission. The brightness of this radiation is demonstrated by using it for broadband characterization of photonic components including Mach-Zehnder interferometers and lattice filters, and for waveguide infrared absorption spectroscopy of liquid-phase analytes. This broadband silicon-based source can be directly integrated with waveguides and photodetectors with no change to existing foundry processes and is expected to find immediate application in optical systems-on-a-chip for metrology, spectroscopy, and sensing.

Abstract Dual-energy cone beam computed tomography (DE-CBCT) has been shown to provide more information and improve performance compared to a conventional single energy spectrum CBCT. Here we report a low-cost DE-CBCT by spectral filtration of a carbon nanotube x-ray source array. The x-ray photons from two focal spots were filtered respectively by a low and a high energy filter. Projection images were collected by alternatively activating the two beams while the source array and detector rotated around the object, and were processed by a one-step materials decomposition and reconstruction method. The performance of the DE-CBCT scanner was evaluated by imaging a water-equivalent plastic phantom with inserts containing known densities of calcium or iodine and an anthropomorphic head phantom with dental implants. A mean energy separation of 15.5 keV was achieved at acceptable dose rates and imaging time. Accurate materials quantification was obtained by materials decomposition. Metal artifacts were reduced in the virtual monoenergetic images synthesized at high energies. The results demonstrated the feasibility of high quality DE-CBCT imaging by spectral filtration without using either an energy sensitive detector or rapid high voltage switching.

The transition to university is a time of great change and adjustment. The challenges of university life can lead to numerous negative consequences for the students. Despite the importance of successful transition for both the student and the university, the current body of literature comprises methodological inconsistencies and disparate analytical goals that make it difficult to identify the most salient and effective factors that help predict transition success. This paper presents a systematic review of research linking personal level risk and protective factors to the outcome of academic achievement among students making the transition to university. This is part of a larger review, following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) and Synthesis Without Meta-analysis (SWiM) guidelines, preregistered on the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO, CRD42022330515), searching PsychInfo, Web of Science, and ERIC databases. Records were included if they studied 'traditional' first year students transitioning to university and were longitudinal in design and excluded if they looked at specific subgroups of students (e.g. international students). The search yielded 27 articles that were eligible, highlighting a broad range of salient factors ranging from personality traits to procrastination and perfectionism. The findings are discussed in relation to moving the research forward towards an intervention to enhance the probability of successful student transition to university.

ObjectivesDaratumumab, a monoclonal antibody against CD38, is increasingly used in the treatment of multiple myeloma, other hematological malignancies and autoimmune diseases. Little is known about its CNS toxicity. We present a case of a patient with POEMS syndrome (syndrome of polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, monoclonal gammopathy and skin changes) who developed an acute leukoencephalopathy shortly after initiation of therapy with daratumumab.MethodsCase report following the CARE case report guidelinesResultsThe patient presented with symptoms of headache and diffuse worsening of a pre-existing tetraparesis. MRI showed a rapidly progressive leukoencephalopathy. Extensive diagnostic evaluation revealed no specific cause, suggesting the leukoencephalopathy to be caused by daratumumab.DiscussionOur report highlights a probably rare, but clinically significant adverse effect of daratumumab and underlines the necessity of raised vigilance for neurological side effects in patients treated with daratumumab.

Summary: Identifying the main threats to soil biodiversity is crucial as soils harbor ∼60% of global biodiversity. Many previous meta-analyses investigating the impact of different global changes (GCs) on biodiversity have omitted soil fauna or are limited by the GCs studied. We conducted a broad-scale meta-analysis focused on soil fauna communities, analyzing 3,161 effect sizes from 624 publications studying climate change, land-use intensification, pollution, nutrient enrichment, invasive species and habitat fragmentation. Land-use intensification resulted in large reductions in soil fauna communities, especially for the larger-bodied groups. Unexpectedly, pollution caused the largest negative impact on soil biodiversity - particularly worrying due to continually increasing levels of pollution and poor mechanistic understanding of impacts relative to other GCs. Not all GCs and stressors were detrimental; organic-based nutrient enrichment often resulted in positive responses. Including soil biodiversity in large-scale analyses is vital to fully understand the impact of GCs across the different realms.

Temporary, sudden, shooting and recurrent unilateral facial pain in the supply area of one or more trigeminal nerve branches characterises trigeminal neuralgia. Innocuous stimuli trigger the pain, e.g. chewing, speaking or brushing teeth. In some patients, paroxysms superimpose on continuous pain. In aetiological terms, idiopathic, classic (due to neurovascular compression) and secondary trigeminal neuralgia (e.g. due to multiple sclerosis, brainstem ischaemia and space-occupying lesions) are defined. Many drugs may be efficacious, with carbamazepine being first-choice therapy. However, non-pharmacological and invasive procedures may also help. To reach the correct diagnosis and determine the best therapeutic measures, adequate pain characterisation and interdisciplinary collaboration are essential. We hereby present our experience of an interdisciplinary approach for the diagnosis and treatment of trigeminal neuralgia.

Objectives: The present study aimed at assessing psychological flexibility, the core construct of the acceptance and commitment therapy model, in the context of chronic illness. In particular, the present study aimed at validating the 18-item Portuguese CompACT measure of psychological flexibility in a chronic illness sample (total n = 419; 83.8% women; 16.2% men) collected via online survey. Method: In particular, we studied the internal structure of the scale employing exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), gender-based invariance, and associations with conceptually relevant constructs (shame, anxiety, depressive symptoms, insomnia severity, and self-compassion). Results: All items from the Openness to Experience subscale were removed due to low loading values on the EFA. The CFA confirmed the adequacy of an 8-item Portuguese CompACT with two subscales, Behavioral Awareness (a = .87) and Valued Action (a = .86). Both subscales correlated negatively with shame, anxiety, depressive symptoms, and insomnia severity. The Valued Action subscale additionally correlated positively with self-compassion. Conclusion: An 8-item version of the Portuguese CompACT, with two subscales, seems to be well-suited for application for clinicians with clients with chronic illness. Ostracism is known to lead to negative psychological outcomes; however, little is known as to how ostracism may be a predictor of paranoid thoughts. The present paper examined the relationship between perceived ostracism and paranoid thoughts (social reference, persecution) by focusing on the potential moderating roles of psychological flexibility and inflexibility. As expected, data from a sample of 315 internet users (M.sub.age = 31.5 years) showed that perceived ostracism was positively related to both social reference and persecution. Psychological flexibility did not moderate the ostracism-paranoid thought relationships. However, psychological inflexibility was a moderator of the ostracism-social reference relationship, but not for ostracism-persecution. Specifically, at both high and low levels of psychological inflexibility, there was a significant positive relationship between ostracism and social reference. Abstract Multisource cone beam computed tomography CBCT (ms-CBCT) has been shown to overcome some of the inherent limitations of a conventional CBCT. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of ms-CBCT for measuring the bone mineral density (BMD) of mandible and maxilla compared to the conventional CBCT. The values measured from a multi-detector CT (MDCT) were used as substitutes for the ground truth. An anthropomorphic adult skull and tissue equivalent head phantom and a homemade calibration phantom containing inserts with varying densities of calcium hydroxyapatite were imaged using the ms-CBCT, the ms-CBCT operating in the conventional single source CBCT mode, and two clinical CBCT scanners at similar imaging doses; and a clinical MDCT. The images of the anthropomorphic head phantom were reconstructed and registered, and the cortical and cancellous bones of the mandible and the maxilla were segmented. The measured CT Hounsfield Unit (HU) and Greyscale Value (GV) at multiple region-of-interests were converted to the BMD using scanner-specific calibration functions. The results from the various CBCT scanners were compared to that from the MDCT. Statistical analysis showed a significant improvement in the agreement between the ms-CBCT and MDCT compared to that between the CBCT and MDCT.

Purpose: This study aims to examine entry-level PhD students' experiences with participating in Critical Friends, a peer review protocol, used to support learning the threshold concept of literature review. It also sought to determine if, and how, students used the peer review protocol electively during their first year of doctoral study. Design/methodology/approach: The authors used a sequential, QUAL-qual mixed-method design to guide the study. Reflective learning journals, surveys and interviews were collected from three cohorts of PhD students (N = 18). Findings: Thematic analysis revealed that giving and receiving writing critique was uncomfortable for these novice peer reviewers and many described emotional disciplining associated with vulnerability. Critical Friends offered a safe space to begin mastery of the literature review and begin transforming new researcher and writer identities. While Critical Friends was a positive experience for students, they struggled implementing the protocol on their own following the course. Practical implications: These findings support the need for faculty to embed peer review opportunities in courses during the first year to facilitate role modeling and mentoring. The findings also demonstrate the need to engage students with peer review early in the program to increase comfort, cultivate student resiliency for accepting critical feedback and build capacity for students to learn with and from others. Originality/value: This paper advocates for the use of peer review practices early in the doctoral study to promote the development of researcher identity and positioning within the research community.

Background: Recently recognized by the World Health Organization as a neglected tropical disease, Noma, an acute and destructive gangrenous disease affecting the gums and facial structures within the oral cavity, has a high mortality rate if untreated. Objectives: To investigate the prevalence and impact of Noma among internally displaced populations in Northeastern Nigeria. Design: A retrospective study. Methods: This retrospective study investigates the prevalence and impact of Noma among internally displaced populations in Northeastern Nigeria. Noma is endemic in Northern Nigeria, Africa, and its occurrence has been linked to extreme poverty, malnutrition, poor hygiene, and inadequate healthcare – conditions exacerbated by the ongoing Boko Haram conflict. Results: The retrospective descriptive cross-sectional analysis of 17 cases reveals a median age of 8 years, with most of the patients being children who suffer significant social stigmas, such as difficulties in speaking, eating, and social integration, including reduced school attendance and marital prospects. Conclusion: The study highlights the urgent need for comprehensive research into the etiology of Noma and its socio-economic impact. It emphasizes the necessity for early and effective intervention strategies, particularly in conflict-stricken areas with limited healthcare access.

Abstract Restoring native grassland vegetation can substantially improve ecosystem service outcomes from agricultural watersheds, but profitable pathways are needed to incentivize conversion from conventional crops. Given growing demand for renewable energy, using grassy biomass to produce biofuels provides a potential solution. We assessed the techno‐economic feasibility and life cycle outcomes of a “grass‐to‐gas” pathway that includes harvesting grassy (lignocellulosic) biomass for renewable natural gas (RNG) production through anaerobic digestion (AD), expanding on previous research that quantified ecosystem service and landowner financial outcomes of simulated grassland restoration in the Grand River Basin of Iowa and Missouri, United States. We found that the amount of RNG produced through AD of grassy biomass ranged 0.12–45.04 million gigajoules (GJ), and the net present value (NPV) of the RNG ranged −$97 to $422 million, depending on the combination of land use, productivity, and environmental credit scenarios. Positive NPVs are achieved with environmental credits for replacement of synthetic agricultural inputs with digestate and clean fuel production (e.g., USEPA D3 Renewable Identification Number, California Low Carbon Fuel Standard). Producing RNG from grassy biomass emits 15.1 g CO2‐eq/MJ, which compares favorably to the fossil natural gas value of 61.1 g CO2‐eq/MJ and exceeds the US Environmental Protection Agency's requirement for cellulosic biofuel. Overall, this study demonstrates opportunities and limitations to using grassy biomass from restored grasslands for sustainable RNG production.

Traumatic brain injury, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, and Alzheimer’s disease are three distinct neurological disorders that share common pathophysiological mechanisms involving neuroinflammation. One sequela of neuroinflammation includes the pathologic hyperphosphorylation of tau protein, an endogenous microtubule-associated protein that protects the integrity of neuronal cytoskeletons. Tau hyperphosphorylation results in protein misfolding and subsequent accumulation of tau tangles forming neurotoxic aggregates. These misfolded proteins are characteristic of traumatic brain injury, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, and Alzheimer’s disease and can lead to downstream neuroinflammatory processes, including assembly and activation of the inflammasome complex. Inflammasomes refer to a family of multimeric protein units that, upon activation, release a cascade of signaling molecules resulting in caspase-induced cell death and inflammation mediated by the release of interleukin-1β cytokine. One specific inflammasome, the NOD-like receptor protein 3, has been proposed to be a key regulator of tau phosphorylation where it has been shown that prolonged NOD-like receptor protein 3 activation acts as a causal factor in pathological tau accumulation and spreading. This review begins by describing the epidemiology and pathophysiology of traumatic brain injury, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, and Alzheimer’s disease. Next, we highlight neuroinflammation as an overriding theme and discuss the role of the NOD-like receptor protein 3 inflammasome in the formation of tau deposits and how such tauopathic entities spread throughout the brain. We then propose a novel framework linking traumatic brain injury, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, and Alzheimer’s disease as inflammasome-dependent pathologies that exist along a temporal continuum. Finally, we discuss potential therapeutic targets that may intercept this pathway and ultimately minimize long-term neurological decline.
