Chemotherapy (CTX)-induced neuropathy [CIPN] limits the maximal applicable dose. Static compression for prevention of CIPN is recommended by guidelines. The postulated underlying effect of reduced microvascular perfusion (MP), however, contradicts current knowledge of elegant in vivo studies. We, thus tested the hypothesis of increased MP combined with reduction of aerobic metabolism in response to pressure-adjusted static compression (PSC) in CTX-induced endothelial damage (CIED). Metabolic oxygen demand (dh), tissue oxygenation (StO2), oxygen supply (O2h) and microvascular perfusion (th) were measured with quantitative time-resolved near infra-red spectroscopy (NIRS) and temperature with thermography on upper extremities following standard procedures in healthy volunteers (n=12, 6 female; age 22±2), peripheral arterial disease patients (n=17, PAD; 75% male, age 68±9 years, 42%, positive controls) and CTX (n=22) with and without clinical CIPN (n=11 each, 46% male; age 64±11 years). Endothelial microvascular function was quantified during post-ischaemic reactive hyperaemia (PIRH). Resting muscle metabolism was quantified by dh during minute 1 of arterial occlusion. Perfusion was quantified by th during venous occlusion. PSC was applied with commercially available compression products and patented palmar pads for up to 90 minutes under standardised and controlled conditions. PSC induces instant and constant fall of temperature (−4.8±0.8°C, p For the first time, CIED as result of CTX comparable to atherosclerotic disease is shown. In contrast to previous assumptions of clinicians propagating compression therapy for prevention of CIPN, the results presented prove that not constriction of the products, but rather a combination of increased local perfusion and oxygen delivery in combination with mechanical effects on the low pressure system and reduced metabolism is induced by PSC. Based on centroblast frequency, follicular lymphoma (FL) is subdivided into grades 1-2, 3A, and 3B. Grade FL3A frequently coexists with FL1-2 (FL1-2-3A). Based on clinical trials, FL1-2 is treated with rituximab (R) or obinutuzumab plus bendamustine (B) or CHOP, while FL3B is treated with R-CHOP. In contrast, there are little data guiding therapy in FL3A. We present a retrospective, multicenter analysis of 95 FL3A or FL1-2-3A and 203 FL1-2 patients treated with R-CHOP or R-B first-line. R-CHOP facilitated a higher response rate (95% versus 76%) and longer overall survival (OS) (3-year OS 89% versus 73%, P = 0.008) in FL3A or FL1-2-3A, whereas the difference in progression-free survival (PFS) did not reach statistical significance. While transformation rates into aggressive lymphoma were similar between both groups, there were more additional malignancies after R-B compared with R-CHOP (6 versus 2 cases). Ultrafast carrier dynamics in transition metal dichalcogenides can lead to carrier localization in real and k-space. Here, we use attosecond transient absorption to investigate element specific carrier localization in few-layer MoSe2 and its ultrafast response.

In gasoline-driven vehicles, fuel vapor retaining systems are used to prevent the emission of hydrocarbons from the fuel tank into the atmosphere. In this paper, which is Part 2 of our publication, measurements of regeneration processes of the activated carbon by flushing it with humid nitrogen gas of 70% relative humidity are represented. Using purge air with high relative humidities, representing realistic conditions, it can be observed that water is accumulated in the activated carbon. For ethanol-containing fuel blends, additional accumulation of ethanol in the carbon occurs, decreasing the adsorption capacity of the carbon for standard fuel’s components considerably. State-of-the-art testing procedures use purge air with about 50% relative humidity for the regeneration of the activated carbon filters. As this often does not represent real operation conditions, the working limits of the fuel vapor retaining systems could not be identified up to now. Furthermore, the determination of the butane working capacity as a quality parameter of the fuel vapor retaining systems is also based on the assumption of relatively low air humidity. Consequently, a new quality criterion has to be established.

The coupling of light to electrical charge carriers in semiconductors is the foundation of many technological applications. Attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy measures simultaneously how excited electrons and the vacancies they leave behind dynamically react to the applied optical fields. In compound semiconductors, these dynamics can be probed via any of their atomic constituents with core-level transitions into valence and conduction band. Typically, the atomic species forming the compound contribute comparably to the relevant electronic properties of the material. One therefore expects to observe similar dynamics, irrespective of the choice of atomic species via which it is probed. Here, we show in the two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductor MoSe2, that through a selenium-based core-level transition we observe charge carriers acting independently from each other, while when probed through molybdenum, the collective, many-body motion of the carriers dominates. Such unexpectedly contrasting behavior can be explained by a strong localization of electrons around molybdenum atoms following absorption of light, which modifies the local fields acting on the carriers. We show that similar behavior in elemental titanium metal [M. Volkov et al., Nat. Phys.15, 1145-1149 (2019)] carries over to transition metal-containing compounds and is expected to play an essential role for a wide range of such materials. We present a new type of dual optical frequency comb source capable of scaling applications to high measurement speeds while combining high average power, ultra-low noise operation, and a compact setup. Our approach is based on a diode-pumped solid-state laser cavity which includes an intracavity biprism operated at Brewster angle to generate two spatially-separated modes with highly correlated properties. The 15-cm-long cavity uses an Yb:CALGO crystal and a SESAM as an end mirror to generate more than 3 W average power per comb, below 80 fs pulse duration, a repetition rate of 1.03 GHz, and a continuously tunable repetition rate difference up to 27 kHz. We carefully investigate the coherence properties of the dual-comb by a series of heterodyne measurements, revealing several important features: (1) ultra-low jitter on the uncorrelated part of the timing noise; (2) the radio frequency comb lines of the interferograms are fully resolved in free-running operation; (3) we validate that through a simple measurement of the interferograms we can determine the fluctuations of the phase of all the radio frequency comb lines; (4) this phase information is used in a post-processing routine to perform coherently averaged dual-comb spectroscopy of acetylene (C2H2) over long timescales. We present a dual-channel ultrafast amplifier delivering millijoule energy with electronically tunable delay of the output pulses from femtoseconds to milliseconds with femtosecond precision. Millijoule energies allow frequency-conversion enabling numerous applications in linear and nonlinear spectroscopy.

Context. The focal-plane contrast of exoplanet imagers is affected by non-common path aberrations (NCPAs) that the adaptive optics system cannot correct for because they occur after the wavefront has been measured. NCPA estimation is commonly based on the long-exposure science image. Phase retrieval algorithms are often used, and they mostly assume that the residual phase error right after the adaptive optics system and averaged over the integration time is zero. This assumption is not always correct, for instance when controlling the adaptive optics to maximize the focal-plane contrast at the location of an exoplanet, that is to say in an adaptive coronagraph. For such cases, we present a method to calculate the NCPA using the phase information derived from the wavefront sensor (WFS) data and the science focal-plane image. Aims. We aim to accurately estimate the NCPA phase in the presence of (residual) atmospheric turbulence with a nonzero average wavefront. We then aim to take the NCPA into account in the adaptive coronagraph controller and achieve a higher contrast. Methods. The WFS measures the wavefront throughout the integration time of the science image. We combine information from the recorded WFS phases to remove the effects of the nonzero average phase from the Point Spread Function (PSF) and to remove the effects of the residual turbulence averaging over time. Then we estimate the NCPA by applying a phase-diversity-based algorithm to the resulting images. Our method is currently limited to imagers with pupil-plane coronagraphs. Results. We are able to recover the NCPA in an adaptive coronagraph setting with 0.01 radian RMS residuals and with a residual turbulence phase error of approximately 0.4 radian RMS. When accounted for in a contrast-control scheme, the NCPA correction leads to an order of magnitude improvement of contrast and a 50% increase in Strehl ratio, in numerical simulations.

During gait neurorehabilitation, many factors influence the quality of gait patterns, particularly the chosen body-weight support (BWS) device. Consequently, robotic BWS devices play a key role in gait rehabilitation of people with neurological disorders. The device transparency, support force vector direction, and attachment to the harness vary widely across existing robotic BWS devices, but the influence of these factors on the production of gait remains unknown. Because this information is key to designing an optimal BWS, we systematically studied these determinants in this work. We report that with a highly transparent device and a conventional harness, healthy participants select a small backward force when asked for optimal BWS conditions. This unexpected finding challenges the view that during human-robot interactions, humans predominantly optimize energy efficiency. Instead, they might seek to increase their feeling of stability and safety. We also demonstrate that the location of the attachment points on the harness strongly affects gait patterns, yet harness attachment is hardly reported in literature. Our results establish principles for the design of BWS devices and personalization of BWS settings for gait neurorehabilitation.

Current and future high-contrast imaging instruments require extreme adaptive optics systems to reach contrasts necessary to directly imaged exoplanets. Telescope vibrations and the temporal error induced by the latency of the control loop limit the performance of these systems. One way to reduce these effects is to use predictive control. We describe how model-free reinforcement learning can be used to optimize a recurrent neural network controller for closed-loop predictive control. First, we verify our proposed approach for tip–tilt control in simulations and a lab setup. The results show that this algorithm can effectively learn to mitigate vibrations and reduce the residuals for power-law input turbulence as compared to an optimal gain integrator. We also show that the controller can learn to minimize random vibrations without requiring online updating of the control law. Next, we show in simulations that our algorithm can also be applied to the control of a high-order deformable mirror. We demonstrate that our controller can provide two orders of magnitude improvement in contrast at small separations under stationary turbulence. Furthermore, we show more than an order of magnitude improvement in contrast for different wind velocities and directions without requiring online updating of the control law.

Silicate bonding is a flexible bonding method that enables room-temperature bonding of many types of materials with only moderate flatness constraints. It is a promising approach for bonding components in high power laser systems, since it results in a thin and low-absorption interface layer between the bonded materials. Here we demonstrate for the first time silicate bonding of a sapphire window to a SEmiconductor Saturable Absorber Mirror (SESAM) and use the composite structure to mode-lock a high-power thin-disk laser. We characterize the fabricated devices both theoretically and experimentally and show how the thermally induced lens of the composite structure can be tuned both in magnitude and sign via the thickness of the sapphire window. We demonstrate mode-locking of a high-power thin-disk laser oscillator with these devices. The altered thermal lens allows us to increase the output power to 233 W, a 70-W-improvement compared to the results achieved with a state-of-the-art SESAM in the same cavity.

Dual optical frequency combs offer excellent performance in delay-swept laser measurements such as high precision spectroscopy, optical ranging and equivalent time sampling. Approaches where both combs are generated in a single oscillator make it possible to avoid the complexity of two fully stabilized but physically separate frequency comb sources [1] . One way to achieve a single-cavity dual-comb operation is by using a birefringent crystal inside the cavity, where it introduces a round-trip delay difference between the two polarization states of the cavity, while also separating them spatially on the active intra-cavity elements. We first demonstrated this technique with a semiconductor disk laser [2] , and more recently with a Yb:CaF 2 femtosecond solid-state laser pumped by a spatially multimode laser diode [3] . Here, by using a single-spatial-mode laser diode for pumping, we demonstrate a femtosecond dual-comb with a further reduced complexity as compared to [3] . This configuration offers a compact and low-noise solution to dual-comb generation.

Newly forming proto-planets are expected to create cavities and substructures in young, gas-rich proto-planetary disks, but they are difficult to detect as they could be confused with disk features affected by advanced image-analysis techniques. Recently, a planet was discovered inside the gap of the transitional disk of the T-Tauri star PDS 70. Here we report on the detection of strong H-alpha emission from two distinct locations in the PDS 70 system, one corresponding to the previously discovered planet PDS 70 b, which confirms the earlier H$\alpha$ detection, and another located close to the outer-edge of the gap, coinciding with a previously identified bright dust spot in the disk and with a small opening in a ring of molecular emission. We identify this second H$\alpha$ peak as a second proto-planet in the PDS 70 system. The H$\alpha$ emission spectra of both proto-planets indicate ongoing accretion onto the proto-planets, which appear to be near a 2:1 mean motion resonance. Our observations show that adaptive-optics-assisted, medium-resolution, integral-field spectroscopy with MUSE targeting accretion signatures will be a powerful way to trace ongoing planet formation in transitional disks at different stages of their evolution. Bilobate comets—small icy bodies with two distinct lobes—are a common configuration among comets, but the factors shaping these bodies are largely unknown. Cometary nuclei, the solid centres of comets, erode by ice sublimation when they are sufficiently close to the Sun, but the importance of a comet’s internal structure on its erosion is unclear. Here we present three-dimensional analyses of images from the Rosetta mission to illuminate the process that shaped the Jupiter-family bilobate comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko over billions of years. We show that the comet’s surface and interior exhibit shear-fracture and fault networks, on spatial scales of tens to hundreds of metres. Fractures propagate up to 500 m below the surface through a mechanically homogeneous material. Through fracture network analysis and stress modelling, we show that shear deformation generates fracture networks that control mechanical surface erosion, particularly in the strongly marked neck trough of 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko, exposing its interior. We conclude that shear deformation shapes and structures the surface and interior of bilobate comets, particularly in the outer Solar System where water ice sublimation is negligible. The shape and internal structure of bilobate comet 67P is controlled by shear deformation inducing mechanically driven erosion along shear fracture networks, according to a 3D analysis of images from the Rosetta mission.

Young giant planets and brown dwarf companions emit near-infrared radiation that can be linearly polarized up to several percent. This polarization can reveal the presence of a circumsubstellar accretion disk, rotation-induced oblateness of the atmosphere, or an inhomogeneous distribution of atmospheric dust clouds. We measured the near-infrared linear polarization of 20 known directly imaged exoplanets and brown dwarf companions with the high-contrast imager SPHERE-IRDIS at the VLT. We reduced the data using the IRDAP pipeline to correct for the instrumental polarization and crosstalk with an absolute polarimetric accuracy, Accepted for publication in A&A. We present a polarization-multiplexed Yb:CaF2 dual-comb laser with 100-fs pulses at 161-MHz repetition-rate and 115-mW average power per comb pumped by a single-mode diode. We measure a high stability of the 1.15-kHz repetition-rate difference.

Jets and outflows are thought to play important roles in regulating star formation and disk evolution. HD 163296 is a well-studied Herbig Ae star that hosts proto-planet candidates, a protoplanetary disk, a protostellar jet, and a molecular outflow, which makes it an excellent laboratory for studying jets. We aim to characterize the jet at the inner regions and check if there are large differences with the features at large separations. A secondary objective is to demonstrate the performance of Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) in high-contrast imaging of extended line emission. MUSE in the narrow field mode (NFM) can provide observations at optical wavelengths with high spatial ($\sim$75 mas) and medium spectral ($R\sim$2500) resolution. With the high-resolution spectral differential imaging (HRSDI) technique, we can characterize the kinematic structures and physical conditions of jets down to 100 mas. We present a SESAM mode-locked self-starting Cr:ZnS oscillator delivering ~ 255 fs transform limited pulses at record high repetition rate above 2 GHz with average output power of 0.8 W at 2.4 μm.

Context. Homochirality is a generic and unique property of life on Earth and is considered a universal and agnostic biosignature. Homochirality induces fractional circular polarization in the incident light that it reflects. Because this circularly polarized light can be sensed remotely, it can be one of the most compelling candidate biosignatures in life detection missions. While there are also other sources of circular polarization, these result in spectrally flat signals with lower magnitude. Additionally, circular polarization can be a valuable tool in Earth remote sensing because the circular polarization signal directly relates to vegetation physiology. Aims. While high-quality circular polarization measurements can be obtained in the laboratory and under semi-static conditions in the field, there has been a significant gap to more realistic remote sensing conditions. Methods. In this study, we present sensitive circular spectropolarimetric measurements of various landscape elements taken from a fast-moving helicopter. Results. We demonstrate that during flight, within mere seconds of measurements, we can differentiate (S/N>5) between grass fields, forests, and abiotic urban areas. Importantly, we show that with only nonzero circular polarization as a discriminant, photosynthetic organisms can even be measured in lakes. Conclusions. Circular spectropolarimetry can be a powerful technique to detect life beyond Earth, and we emphasize the potential of utilizing circular spectropolarimetry as a remote sensing tool to characterize and monitor in detail the vegetation physiology and terrain features of Earth itself., 7 pages, 6 figures
