Abstract: The discovery of almost 2000 exoplanets has revealed an unexpectedly diverse planet population. Observations to date have shown that our Solar System is certainly not representative of the general population of planets in our Milky Way. The key science questions that urgently need addressing are therefore: What are exoplanets made of? Why are planets as they are? What causes the exceptional diversity observed as compared to the Solar System? EChO (Exoplanet Characterisation Observatory) has been designed as a dedicated survey mission for transit and eclipse spectroscopy capable of observing a large and diverse planet sample within its four-year mission lifetime. EChO can target the atmospheres of super-Earths, Neptune-like, and Jupiter-like planets, in the very hot to temperate zones (planet temperatures of 300K-3000K) of F to M-type host stars. Over the next ten years, several new ground- and space-based transit surveys will come on-line (e.g. NGTS, CHEOPS, TESS, PLATO), which will specifically focus on finding bright, nearby systems. The current rapid rate of discovery would allow the target list to be further optimised in the years prior to EChO's launch and enable the atmospheric characterisation of hundreds of planets. Placing the satellite at L2 provides a cold and stable thermal environment, as well as a large field of regard to allow efficient time-critical observation of targets randomly distributed over the sky. A 1m class telescope is sufficiently large to achieve the necessary spectro-photometric precision. The spectral coverage (0.5-11 micron, goal 16 micron) and SNR to be achieved by EChO, thanks to its high stability and dedicated design, would enable a very accurate measurement of the atmospheric composition and structure of hundreds of exoplanets., Comment: 50 pages, 30 figures. Abstract: International audience; Wetting of polymer-grafted nanoparticles (NPs) in a polymer nanocomposite (PNC) film is driven by a difference in surface energy between components as well as bulk thermodynamics, namely, the value of the interaction parameter, χ. The interplay between these contributions is investigated in a PNC containing 25 wt % polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)-grafted silica NPs (PMMA-NPs) in poly(styrene-ran-acrylonitrile) (SAN) upon annealing above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST, 160 °C). Atomic force microscopy (AFM) studies show that the areal density of particles increases rapidly and then approaches 80% of that expected for random close-packed hard spheres. A slightly greater areal density is observed at 190 °C compared to 170 °C. The PMMA-NPs are also shown to prevent dewetting of PNC films under conditions where the analogous polymer blend is unstable. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging shows that PMMANPs symmetrically wet both interfaces and form columns that span the free surface and substrate interface. Using grazingincidence Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (GI-RBS), the PMMA-NP surface excess (Z*) initially increases rapidly with time and then approaches a constant value at longer times. Consistent with the areal density, Z* is slightly greater at deeper quench depths, which is attributed to the more unfavorable interactions between the PMMA brush and SAN segments. The Z* values at early times are used to determine the PMMA-NP diffusion coefficients, which are significantly larger than theoretical predictions. These studies provide insights into the interplay between wetting and phase separation in PNCs and can be utilized in nanotechnology applications where surface-dependent properties, such as wettability, durability, and friction, are important.

Abstract: We introduce a new class of estimators for the linear response of steady states of stochastic dynamics. We generalize the likelihood ratio approach and formulate the linear response as a product of two martingales, hence the name "martingale product estimators". We present a systematic derivation of the martingale product estimator, and show how to construct such estimator so its bias is consistent with the weak order of the numerical scheme that approximates the underlying stochastic differential equation. Motivated by the estimation of transport properties in molecular systems, we present a rigorous numerical analysis of the bias and variance for these new estimators in the case of Langevin dynamics. We prove that the variance is uniformly bounded in time and derive a specific form of the estimator for second-order splitting schemes for Langevin dynamics. For comparison, we also study the bias and variance of a Green-Kubo estimator, motivated, in part, by its variance growing linearly in time. Presented analysis shows that the new martingale product estimators, having uniformly bounded variance in time, offer a competitive alternative to the traditional Green-Kubo estimator. Abstract: We consider assignment policies that allocate resources to users, where both resources and users are located on a one-dimensional line. First, we consider unidirectional assignment policies that allocate resources only to users located to their left. We propose the Move to Right (MTR) policy, which scans from left to right assigning nearest rightmost available resource to a user, and contrast it to the Unidirectional Gale-Shapley (UGS) matching policy. While both policies among all unidirectional policies, minimize the expected distance traveled by a request (request distance), MTR is fairer. Moreover, we show that when user and resource locations are modeled by statistical point processes, and resources are allowed to satisfy more than one user, the spatial system under unidirectional policies can be mapped into bulk service queueing systems, thus allowing the application of many queueing theory results that yield closed form expressions. As we consider a case where different resources can satisfy different numbers of users, we also generate new results for bulk service queues. We also consider bidirectional policies where there are no directional restrictions on resource allocation and develop an algorithm for computing the optimal assignment which is more efficient than known algorithms in the literature when there are more resources than users. Abstract: Predictive and quantitative understanding of ion and mass transport in liquid and polymeric electrolytes is at the heart of electrochemistry. Here, the goal is to accurately simulate the performance of an electrochemical cell, for which the temperature- and concentration-dependent transport coefficients of a given electrolyte, as well as the thermodynamic mean salt molal activity coefficient, must be known. These are the conductivity, σ, the salt diffusion coefficient, D, and the cation transference number, t+. The transport coefficients must hence be extracted with high accuracy from experimental measurements. The transference number is defined as the ratio of current carried by the cation to the total electric current. Its importance with regards to energy density and power density was recognized in the early 1990s by Doyle, Fuller and Newman (1). Nevertheless, researchers still argue about transference number values, even in baseline systems such as lithium bistrifluoromethanesulfonimidate (LiTFSI) in Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) (2). The transference number can be measured via the steady-state Bruce-Vincent polarization method (3, 4), the Balsara-Newman method (5), as well as pulsed field gradients NMR (pfg-NMR) (6) and pulsed field gradients electrophoretic NMR (e-NMR) (2). Despite extensive efforts towards unified results of these approaches, in particular as a function of ion concentration, a clear picture has not yet emerged. Towards this end, we developed an alternative approach towards determining the ion transport properties. Specifically, we directly and operando measured precise microscopic and macroscopic physical properties of the electrolyte upon cell polarization in a Li/electrolyte/Li cell, combined this with calculations via concentrated solution theory continuum modelling (CM), and rationalized our findings with microscopic insight from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We utilized a well-studied benchmark model system electrolyte consisting of PEO and LiTFSI at Li+ to EO molar ratio of r = 0.1. Under constant voltage polarization, we directly measured the velocity associated with electrolyte and ions via heterodyne synchrotron X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS), and the TFSI- concentration gradient from electrode to electrode via X-ray absorption microscopy (XAM). The significance of our results lies in the unification of microscopic and macroscopic predictions from simulation with experimental measurements as well as the self-consistent determination of a concentration-independent transference numbers of approximately 0.2. Abstract: We consider numerical schemes for computing the linear response of steady-state averages with respect to a perturbation of the drift part of the stochastic differential equation. The schemes are based on the Girsanov change-of-measure theory in order to reweight trajectories with factors derived from a linearization of the Girsanov weights. The resulting estimator is the product of a time average and a martingale correlated to this time average. We investigate both its discretization and finite-time approximation errors. The designed numerical schemes are shown to be of a bounded variance with respect to the integration time which is desirable feature for long time simulations. We also show how the discretization error can be improved to second-order accuracy in the time step by modifying the weight process in an appropriate way.

Abstract: We introduce a new online learning framework where, at each trial, the learner is required to select a subset of actions from a given known action set. Each action is associated with an energy value, a reward and a cost. The sum of the energies of the actions selected cannot exceed a given energy budget. The goal is to maximise the cumulative profit, where the profit obtained on a single trial is defined as the difference between the maximum reward among the selected actions and the sum of their costs. Action energy values and the budget are known and fixed. All rewards and costs associated with each action change over time and are revealed at each trial only after the learner's selection of actions. Our framework encompasses several online learning problems where the environment changes over time; and the solution trades-off between minimising the costs and maximising the maximum reward of the selected subset of actions, while being constrained to an action energy budget. The algorithm that we propose is efficient and general in that it may be specialised to multiple natural online combinatorial problems., Published in AISTATS 2019

Abstract: International audience; We report on the surface enhanced resonant Raman scattering (SERRS) in hybridMoSe2@Au plasmonic-excitonic nanostructures, focusing on the situation where the localizedsurface plasmon resonance of Au nanodisks is finely tuned to the exciton absorption ofmonolayer MoSe2. Using a resonant excitation, we investigate the SERRS in MoSe2@Au andthe resonant Raman scattering (RRS) in a MoSe2@SiO2 reference. Both optical responses arecompared to the non-resonant Raman scattering signal, thus providing an estimate of therelative contributions from the localized surface plasmons and the confined excitons to theRaman scattering enhancement. We determine a SERRS/RRS enhancement factor exceedingone order of magnitude. Furthermore, using numerical simulations, we explore the opticalnear-field properties of the hybrid MoSe2@Au nanostructure and investigate the SERRSefficiency dependence on the nanodisk surface morphology and on the excitation wavelength.We demonstrate that a photothermal effect, due to the resonant plasmonic pumping ofelectron-hole pairs into the MoSe2 layer, and the surface roughness of the metallicnanostructures are the main limiting factors of the SERRS efficiency.

Abstract: International audience; A feasible, nonparametric, probabilistic approach for quantifying model-form uncertainties associated with a High-Dimensional computational Model (HDM) and/or a corresponding Hyperreduced Projection-based Reduced-Order Model (HPROM) designed for the solution of generalized eigenvalue problems arising in vibration analysis, is presented. It is based on the construction of a Stochastic HPROM (SHPROM) associated with the HDM and its HPROM using three innovative ideas: the substitution of the deterministic Reduced-Order Basis (ROB) with a Stochastic counterpart (SROB) that features a reduced number of hyperparameters; the construction of this SROB on a compact Stiefel manifold in order to guarantee the linear independence of its column vectors and the satisfaction of any applicable constraints; and the formulation and solution of a reduced-order inverse statistical problem to determine the hyperparameters so that the mean value and statistical fluctuations of the eigenvalues predicted in real time using the SHPROM match target values obtained from available data. If the data are experimental data, the proposed approach models and quantifies the model-form uncertainties associated with the HDM, while accounting for the modeling errors introduced by model reduction. If on the other hand the data are high-dimensional numerical data, the proposed approach models and quantifies the model-form uncertainties associated with the HPROM. Consequently, the proposed nonparametric, probabilistic approach for modeling and quantifying model-form uncertainties can also be interpreted as an effective means for extracting fundamental information or knowledge from data that is not captured by a deter-ministic computational model, and incorporating it in this model. Its potential for quantifying model-form uncertainties in eigenvalue computations is demonstrated for what-if? vibration analysis scenarios associated with shape changes for a jet engine nozzle.

Abstract: Zirconium nitride (ZrN) thin films were deposited by reactive RF magnetron sputtering on Ti-6Al-4V and Si (100) substrates for potential use in biomedical applications. The tribological behaviour was evaluated against bovine bone in dry condition using a pin-on-disc apparatus. Abrasion is the primary wear mechanism observed in ZrN/bone contact. The corrosion properties were determined through two electrochemical techniques: potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The coatings with reduced oxygen content provided: (i) good resistance against corrosion when exposed to physiological solution and (ii) better anti-bioadhesion against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Abstract: The development of optical nanofibers (ONF) and the study and control of their optical properties when coupling atoms to their electromagnetic modes has opened new possibilities for their use in quantum optics and quantum information science. These ONFs offer tight optical mode confinement (less than the wavelength of light) and diffraction-free propagation. The small cross section of the transverse field allows probing of linear and non-linear spectroscopic features of atoms with exquisitely low power. The cooperativity -- the figure of merit in many quantum optics and quantum information systems -- tends to be large even for a single atom in the mode of an ONF, as it is proportional to the ratio of the atomic cross section to the electromagnetic mode cross section. ONFs offer a natural bus for information and for inter-atomic coupling through the tightly-confined modes, which opens the possibility of one-dimensional many-body physics and interesting quantum interconnection applications. The presence of the ONF modifies the vacuum field, affecting the spontaneous emission rates of atoms in its vicinity. The high gradients in the radial intensity naturally provide the potential for trapping atoms around the ONF, allowing the creation of one-dimensional arrays of atoms. The same radial gradient in the transverse direction of the field is responsible for the existence of a large longitudinal component that introduces the possibility of spin-orbit coupling of the light and the atom, enabling the exploration of chiral quantum optics.

Abstract: We analyze the connectivity of an $M$-layer network over a common set of nodes that are active only in a fraction of the layers. Each layer is assumed to be a subgraph (of an underlying connectivity graph $G$) induced by each node being active in any given layer with probability $q$. The $M$-layer network is formed by aggregating the edges over all $M$ layers. We show that when $q$ exceeds a threshold $q_c(M)$, a giant connected component appears in the $M$-layer network---thereby enabling far-away users to connect using `bridge' nodes that are active in multiple network layers---even though the individual layers may only have small disconnected islands of connectivity. We show that $q_c(M) \lesssim \sqrt{-\ln(1-p_c)}\,/{\sqrt{M}}$, where $p_c$ is the bond percolation threshold of $G$, and $q_c(1) \equiv q_c$ is its site percolation threshold. We find $q_c(M)$ exactly for when $G$ is a large random network with an arbitrary node-degree distribution. We find $q_c(M)$ numerically for various regular lattices, and find an exact lower bound for the kagome lattice. Finally, we find an intriguingly close connection between this multilayer percolation model and the well-studied problem of site-bond percolation, in the sense that both models provide a smooth transition between the traditional site and bond percolation models. Using this connection, we translate known analytical approximations of the site-bond critical region, which are functions only of $p_c$ and $q_c$ of the respective lattice, to excellent general approximations of the multilayer connectivity threshold $q_c(M)$., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures, to appear in Physical Review E

Abstract: A hypergraph is a set $V$ of vertices and a set of nonempty subsets of $V$ , called hyperedges. Unlike graphs, hypergraphs can capture higher-order interactions in social and communication networks that go beyond a simple union of pairwise relationships. In this paper, we consider the shortest path problem in hypergraphs. We develop two algorithms for finding and maintaining the shortest hyperpaths in a dynamic network with both weight and topological changes. These two algorithms are the first to address the fully dynamic shortest path problem in a general hypergraph. They complement each other by partitioning the application space based on the nature of the change dynamics and the type of the hypergraph. We analyze the time complexity of the proposed algorithms and perform simulation experiments for random geometric hypergraphs, energy efficient routing in multichannel multiradio networks, and the Enron email data set. The experiment with the Enron email data set illustrates the application of the proposed algorithms in social networks for identifying the most important actor and the latent social relationship based on the closeness centrality metric.

Abstract: We report on the properties of high quality HVPE InN and on successful subsequent MBE growth of InN layers with improved characteristics on HVPE InN template substrates. InN layers were grown by HVPE on GaN/sapphire HVPE templates. The (00.2) XRD rocking curve of the best InN layer (RC) had the FWHM of about 375 arc sec, being the narrowest XRD RCs ever reported for HVPE InN. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) revealed that at the GaN/InN interface, the threading dislocations that come from GaN were transmitted into the InN layer. We estimated the dislocation density in HVPE grown InN to be in the low 109 cm–2 range. Reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) confirmed monocrystalline structure of the InN layers surface. Layers photoluminescence (PL) showed edge emission around 0.8 eV. Hall measured free electron concentration was in the range of 1019 -1020 cm–3 and electron mobility was ∼200 cm2/V s. MBE growth of InN was performed on the HVPE grown InN template substrate demonstrating the improvement of material quality in the case of homo-epitaxial growth of InN. Abstract: International audience; A series of Vlasov-type high power microwave launchers mere investigated with several slant-cut angles. Finite element analysis using parallel computation was performed on a cluster of workstations and compared with low-power measurements made on a variety of such antennas. Good agreement between the main features of the radiation patterns were observed. However, not all details were reproduced.
