L’écriture d’une histoire féministe de l’architecture appelle la conception et l’utilisation d’outils méthodologiques, analytiques, historiographiques et narratifs innovants afin de déstabiliser les traditionnelles et toujours actuelles classifications hégémoniques de l’histoire l’architecture. Dans notre recherche doctorale portant sur production d’un nouveau récit inclusif de l’architecture moderne en Belgique partant de la figure sui generis de l’architecte Simone Guillissen-Hoa (1916-1996), force est de relever les limites de l’analyse discursive, tant dans les textes issus des études de genre que dans la discipline de l’histoire de l’architecture où « le danger de cette appropriation du discours tient à son incapacité à trouver un écho dans la pratique. » (Dadour 2020, 97) Les innovations discursives « portent un regard critique mais sont très loin de proposer une stratégie architecturale ou un projet de bâti. » (Dadour 2020, 98) Dès lors, dans un contexte d’hybridation progressive des supports mémoriels (Barbut 2020, 117), notre méthodologie par le prisme de l’analyse des discours évolue vers une méthodologie « par le faire », « par le projet » axée sur les manières de « faire histoire », pour ainsi développer des stratégies comme ressources du projet architectural, archivistique, voire muséal, sans les réduire à une pratique textuelle (Dadour 2020, 99). Dans la volonté du CIVA (Hirsch, Krzykowski, et Libert 2021; Hirsch 2024), Centre International pour la Ville, l'Architecture et le paysage, de porter un éclairage sur Guillissen-Hoa, figure importante du second modernisme belge, les négociations avec Jean-Pierre Hoa, fils de Guillissen-Hoa et dépositaire des archives de l’architecte, ont abouti, courant 2023, à l’acquisition par le CIVA du fonds Simone Guillissen-Hoa, jusqu’ici privé. Background Kupffer cells (KC) are embryonically derived liver resident macrophages, responsible for maintaining liver homeostasis. Apart from KCs, infiltrating mono-macrophages of bone marrow origin also make up a small proportion of the hepatic macrophage population. During chronic liver diseases, the Kupffer cell population is largely replaced by the infiltrating mono-macrophage populations. Thus, the hepatic macrophage populations differ in their origin, phenotype, and characteristics. So, maintaining a balance between the different hepatic macrophage populations determines the outcome of the progression of chronic liver diseases. Aim To study the miRNA-based epigenetic dysregulation of KCs and infiltrating macrophages during chronic liver diseases. Methods- C57BL/6 mice were intraperitoneally injected with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) twice a week for 4 and 18 weeks to induce progressive liver damage. Enzymatic digestion of the liver using collagenase was performed to isolate non-parenchymal cell fractions (NPF). Cell sorting using specific surface antibodies was performed to isolate KCs and infiltrating mono-macrophages from the NPF of digested livers. Results The overall leukocyte cell population was found to be slightly increased in the CCl4 groups than oil-treated group. The overall frequency of the myeloid cell population remained the same between the vehicle and CCl4-treated groups. The frequency of KCs is decreased in both CCl4-treated mice liver groups (20%-25% of total myeloid cell population) in comparison to the vehicle-treated group (60% of myeloid cell population), while the frequency of mono-macrophages was found to be initially increased in the 4 weeks CCl4 treated group (25% of myeloid cells) and then decreased in the 18 weeks CCl4 treated group (10% of myeloid cells). BACKGROUND: Physical exercise therapy is of proven efficacy in the treatment of adults with depression, but corresponding evidence is lacking in depressed adolescent inpatients. The aim of this study was to document the effect of add-on treatment with structured physical exercise in a clinical population of adolescents hospitalized for depression and anxiety in a psychiatric hospital. METHODS: A group of 52 adolescent inpatients was randomly assigned to a physical exercise or control program three to four times per week over a six-week period (20 hours in total). The primary outcome was the Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale (HADS) for evaluation of depression and anxiety symptoms. Secondary outcomes were psychological self-assessments, diagnostic interviews, and physical examinations. RESULTS: Six participants were lost in each group, leaving 20 inpatients each in the intervention and control groups. A linear mixed model with F-test revealed a significant interaction in favor of physical exercise in reducing the mean depression score (HADS-D) by 3.8 points [95% (CI), range 1.8 to 5.7], compared to a mean reduction score of 0.7 [95% (CI), range -0,7 to 2.0] in the control group. No significant interaction was found for anxiety symptoms (HADS-A). LIMITATIONS: The investigation was limited to the six-week hospital window and the small sample size prevented exploring differences in social characteristics. CONCLUSION: Structured physical exercise add-on therapy integrated into the psychiatric hospitalization of adolescents has led to a reduction in their depressive symptoms, demonstrating its effectiveness in the care of adolescent inpatients with depression.

Dans un contexte où les appels à la "décolonisation" des structures et des schémas de pensée se multiplient, donnant lieu à des revendications multiples dans des champs extrêmement diversifiés (espace public, économie, politique, culture, enseignement...), le séminaire s'interroge sur le concept de "décolonisation" sur le plan épistémologique et tente de le décortiquer au prisme de divers auteurs emblématiques (Fanon, Sartre, Senghor, Césaire, Foucault, Derrida, Saïd, Mbembe, Chakrabarty, Chakravorty Spivak, Davis, Dorlin...). Notre réflexion s'articule ainsi autour de la question suivante : comment, concrètement, nous former, nous entraîner, acquérir des réflexes pour réfléchir à notre monde, à nos sociétés, d’hier et d’aujourd’hui, de façon plus inclusive ? Depuis le milieu du 20e siècle, avec l’émancipation féminine et les mouvements anticolonialistes, plusieurs courants et théories renouvellent la manière d’écrire l’histoire et de décoder les sociétés actuelles. Parmi ces courants, il y a notamment, les Postcolonial studies, les Subaltern studies les Decolonial studies, mais aussi par exemple, l’histoire du genre et l’histoire connectée. Ces courants critiques et analytiques peuvent aider les étudiants, les chercheurs, mais aussi les citoyens que nous sommes, quelle que soit notre profession, à « décentrer » notre regard sur les choses, de manière à comprendre les systèmes de pensée et d’action passés et présents, ici et ailleurs, selon des perspectives nouvelles. Se « décentrer », cela peut impliquer un changement de regard, un changement de perspective, soit sur le plan géographique, lorsqu’on s’immerge au cœur d’autres sociétés que celles dont on est issus/natifs et qu’on observe le monde depuis ce nouveau point de vue, soit sur le plan temporel, quand on voyage dans l’histoire, ce qui peut nous amener à relativiser l’impact de certaines césures/ruptures chronologiques, (par ex. entre « période coloniale » et « postcoloniale »…). This study evaluates the performance of commercial reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) membranes for the removal of metal ions from synthetic water and surface water carried from the north‐west of Lake Tanganyika in the city of Uvira, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Metal ion analyses were performed by the standardized ICP‐MS and ICP‐OES methods. The RO membrane showed higher metal ion rejection in high‐concentration solutions (synthetic samples) prepared in the laboratory as well as in low‐concentration samples from real raw water collected near Lake Tanganyika. Rejection levels were higher than 98% for Cr3+, Pb2+, Cd2+, As3+, Ni2+, and Sb+3 ions in the synthetic solutions, and 99.2, 98.8, 98.6, 99.2, 98.4, and 98.8%, respectively, in the real samples. The concentrations of metals in the permeate varied depending on the feed concentration and were 0.15 to 1.02 mg/L, 0.33 to 22 mg/L, and 0.11 to 22 mg/L in RO, NF90, and NF270 membranes, respectively. Regarding the NF membranes, the rejection of Cr, Ni, and Cd ions was interesting: 98.2, 97.8, and 92.3%, respectively. However, it was lower for Pb, As, and Sb ions: 76.9, 52.5 and 64.1%, respectively. The flux of NF was 329 to 375 L/m2.h, much higher than for RO membranes, which had a flux of 98 to 132 L/m2.h. The studied membranes are thus a feasible solution to remove the studied metals from real water sources at low concentrations since they meet the standards of the World Health Organization on specific values assigned to chemicals from industrial sources and human habitation areas where these ions are present in drinking water.

The practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) is a social norm embedded in the patriarchal system and is resistant to change due to its roots in the tradition of the practising communities. Despite this difficulty in change, some women succeed in changing their attitudes towards the practice. In trying to understand what makes these women change their attitudes, we identified in a previous study, the critical life events at which change occurs (turning point). These turning points were described with emotions and conflicting feelings based on which we hypothesised that emotion regulation and the resolution of conflicts of loyalty might be possible mechanisms that explain the change of attitudes by the women. In this article, we sought to investigate how the mechanisms interact and how they were at play to explain the change. We, therefore, triangulated our previous data, fifteen women interviewed twice, with the published life stories and public testimonies of 10 women with FGM, and interviews of six experts chosen for their complementary fields of expertise to discuss the emerging concepts and theory, generated by our study. The data were analysed using framework analysis and an element of the grounded theory approach (constant comparison). As a result of our theorisation process, we propose a model of change in five stages (Emotion suppression, The awakening, The clash, Re-appropriation of self, and Reconciliation). This describes the process of a woman’s journey from compliance with FGM and community norms to non-compliance. Our study reveals how the women whose stories were analysed, moved from being full members of their community at the cost of suppressing their emotions and denying their selves, to becoming their whole selves while symbolically remaining members of their communities through the forgiveness of their mothers.

BACKGROUND: Intensive motor-learning-based interventions have demonstrated efficacy for improving motor function in children with unilateral spastic cerebral palsy (USCP). Although this improvement has been associated mainly with neuroplastic changes in the primary sensori-motor cortices, this plasticity may also involve a wider fronto-parietal network for motor learning. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether hand-arm bimanual intensive therapy including lower extremities (HABIT-ILE) induces brain activation changes in an extensive network for motor skill learning and whether these changes are related to functional changes observed after HABIT-ILE. METHODS: In total, 25 children with USCP were behaviourally assessed in manual dexterity and everyday activities before and after HABIT-ILE. Functional imagery monitored brain activity while participants manipulated objects using their less-affected, more-affected or both hands. Two random-effects-group analyses performed at the whole-brain level assessed the brain activity network before and after therapy. Three other random-effects-group analyses assessed brain activity changes after therapy. Spearman's correlations were used to evaluate the correlation between behavioural and brain activity changes. RESULTS: The same fronto-parietal network was identified before and after therapy. After the intervention, the more-affected hand manipulation elicited a decrease in activity on the motor cortex of the non-lesional hemisphere and an increase in activity on motor areas of the lesional hemisphere. The less-affected hand manipulation generated a decrease in activity of sensorimotor areas in the non-lesional hemisphere. Both-hands manipulation elicited an increase in activity of both hemispheres. Furthermore, we observed an association between brain activity changes and changes in everyday activity assessments. Purpose Investigating mothers’ perceptions of Cerebral Palsy (CP) and the impact of caregiving on family life in Benin, a west-African low to middle-income country (LMIC). Methods In this cross-sectional study we interviewed at their homes 88 mothers of children with CP about their perception of the cause of CP and stigmatization issues. Additionally, they completed the Impact on Family Scale and the Family Support Scale questionnaires. Multinomial and ordinal regressions analyses were used (p < 0.05). Results Most mothers (78%) referred to non-biomedical causes of CP (God’s will or curse). Caregivers with a limited education level were more likely to report non-biomedical beliefs. Only 28% reported having received from physicians an explanation of the causes of CP. Around 38% endorsed neighbors considered their children as cursed, which is a source of stigmatization. Mothers perceived a high impact of caregiving on their family life that correlated with non-biomedical beliefs, low education level, and the severity of CP. Conclusion There is a need in Benin, and probably in West-African LMICs generally, to shift to a family-centered care system and to inform the public about the root causes of CP to improve social integration of children with CP and decrease the negative impact on their families. • Implication for rehabilitation • Mothers with a limited education level are more likely to report non-biomedical causes of CP in this LMIC; • mothers’ level of education and non-biomedical beliefs of causes of CP are associated to a high impact of caregiving on family life in this LMIC; • mothers of children with CP in this LMIC do not perceive health-workers helpful.

This review examines the recent trends and developments in membrane-based extraction technology, with a focus on supported liquid membrane (SLM) extraction. This paper attempts to review the studies on polymeric membrane extraction, relating to mass transfer, stability, fluxes and performance. Prospects for future research, on the use of membrane extraction for in-situ product removal of chiral amines, are presented as well. The main challenge of the current state-of-the-art membrane extraction technology is limited SLM-stability. Conventionally, polymeric membrane materials are used as an SLM-support. The use of ceramic membranes, either with or without surface modification, should be looked at as a possible means of stability enhancement. The use of ionic liquids as the solvent for membrane impregnation is already studied intensively in literature. However, the performance of a certain IL is strongly dependent on the system at hand. Techniques such as hollow fibre renewal liquid membranes and polymer inclusion membranes, can also increase membrane stability and are discussed further. Lastly, the industrial application potential of membrane extraction is hindered by the lack of scaled-up pilot plants, which is addressed as well.

RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE: Membranous nephropathy (MN) is characterized by the deposition of immune complexes along glomerular basement membranes. M-Type phospholipase A2 receptor (PLA2R), thrombospondin type 1 domain-containing 7A (THSD7A), exostosin 1 and 2 (EXT1/2), and neural epidermal growth factor-like 1 protein (NELL-1) have been identified as established or potential podocyte antigens in MN. We investigated the association of podocyte antigen staining with MN clinical phenotype and outcomes. STUDY DESIGN: Multicenter retrospective cohort study. SETTING & PARTICIPANTS: 177 consecutive patients with MN unrelated to lupus erythematosus, identified after screening of 3,875 native kidney biopsies performed in the Belgian UCLouvain Kidney Disease Network from 2000 through 2018. PREDICTOR: Positive immunostaining for podocyte antigens on archived kidney biopsy samples. OUTCOMES: Association with different phenotypes (baseline characteristics of patients and pathologic findings on kidney biopsy), time to cancer and to kidney failure. ANALYTICAL APPROACH: Kaplan-Meier estimates and Cox regression analyses to assess time to cancer and kidney failure. RESULTS: 177 patients were followed up for a median of 4.0 (IQR, 1.3-8.0) years. Diagnosis of PLA2R-positive (PLA2R+), THSD7A+, and double-negative (PLA2R-/THSD7A-) MN was made in 117 (66.1%), 6 (3.4%), and 54 (30.5%) patients, respectively. Progression to kidney failure was similar in all groups. Although the number of patients with THSD7A+MN was small, they showed a higher incidence (50%) and increased risk for developing cancer during follow-up (adjusted HR, 5.0 [95% CI, 1.4-17.9]; P=0.01). 8% and 5% of patients with double-negative MN stained positively for EXT1/2 and NELL-1, respectively. Most patients with EXT1/2+MN were women, had features of systemic autoimmunity, and showed glomerular C1q deposits. Le stage constitue un moment privilégié du programme d’étude, au cours duquel l’étudiant·e intègre un milieu socioprofessionnel authentique dans lequel il·elle va construire des compétences professionnelles (connaissances, pratiques, attitudes, postures…) liées aux acquis d’apprentissages de la formation. Or, il ne suffit pas d’immerger le·la futur·e professionnel·le en situation de travail pour que les compétences attendues se développent. En effet, l’étudiant·e, responsabilisé·e au moment du stage, se sent souvent démuni·e quand il·elle doit tisser des liens entre sa formation théorique et la pratique (Caron & Portelance, 2017). Il·elle perçoit aussi parfois des écarts entre ses acquis théoriques et la réalité du terrain qui le déstabilisent (Waege & Haugaløkken, 2013) et serait en demande d’aide. Dès lors, comment accompagner l’étudiant·e dans le cadre des stages et lui permettre de réguler ses apprentissages ? Comment, aussi, l’amener à porter un regard réflexif sur sa pratique, à s’autoévaluer pour cheminer vers une autonomie professionnelle ? Pour répondre à ces questions, deux groupes de recherches collaboratives, constitués de membres de l’UCLouvain et de partenaires de hautes écoles, se sont réunis tout au long du projet grâce au soutien du Fonds de développement pédagogique de l’université (FDP2). Ce cahier prend appui sur leurs réflexions et propose des cadrages théoriques, des témoignages et des pistes d’action pour outiller tout formateur·rice dans l’accompagnement formatif des stagiaires.

Responding to recent calls to extend our understanding of ableism as a powerful organizing principle of the workplace, this study examines how ableism operates as a form of symbolic violence, constraining the career opportunities of disabled employees in a financial services company. Drawing on Bourdieuan theory, we analyze how the ‘rules of the game’ structuring the organizational field and the habitus of disabled individuals jointly shape those individuals’ ability to accrue economic, social, cultural as well as symbolic capital, as well as up different positions in a particular social space. A Bourdieuan approach centered on social practice allows us to develop a fuller understanding of the mechanisms through which valued forms of capital are unequally distributed within an arbitrary social order that privileges certain competences favoring able-bodied over disabled workers, and of disabled workers’ own role within such mechanisms.

A metabolic study of the South-Eastern part of the Calderona Mountain Range (Sierra Calderona) was developed in 2014 as a part of the Sierra Calderona Strategic Plan (SCSP). The goal of the study was to define strategies to optimise materials and energy flows in the region and, thereby, enhance the sustainability of the entire regional system. Due to its location on the outskirts of the Metropolitan Area of Valencia, Sierra Calderona presents most of the metabolic challenges and potentials that characterise peri-urban areas, giving the SCSP case a wider and transferable interest. After introducing the scope, rationale, and research questions, the article first summarises the main theoretical and methodological frameworks underpinning the integration of metabolic studies in regional and urban planning. Following our literature review, the article focuses on the way in which the metabolic analyses were inputted and informed the different phases and outcomes of the SCSP: analysis and diagnosis, regional objectives and strategies, landscape and land-use plan, sectoral plans and pilot projects. This approach was based on the combination of complementary analytical methods such as material and energy flow accounting and Ecological Footprint Analysis. Additionally, the article reflects on how new conceptual tools such as the Functional Metabolic Areas were used in the SCSP in order to operate in a complex spatial system and to generate a regional metabolic model. Subsequently, the main contributions and shortcomings of the use of metabolic inputs in the SCSP are discussed by comparing the metabolic assessment approach adopted in the SCSP with available models and methods. Finally, our conclusions suggest potential improvements and future lines of research on a two-way implication between urban metabolism research and regional and urban planning practice.

Recent years have seen a substantial growth of urban metabolism research, resulting from increasing scientific consensus that metabolic flow assessments can inform resource-efficient urban policy. However, only a few works report on retrospective evaluation of the relevance and impact of urban metabolism studies in urban planning. Practice-relevant urban metabolism research depends on the applicability of assessment methods as well as on the effectiveness of knowledge transfer between scientists and practitioners. This article presents a retrospective evaluation of a collaborative urban metabolism project (EU-FP7 BRIDGE) conducted through empirical inquiry. The goal of the inquiry was to evaluate in a combined fashion the applicability of the BRIDGE assessment method in urban planning and the effectiveness of the knowledge-transfer approach in one of the BRIDGE case-study cities (Helsinki, Finland). Through generalization of key findings on strengths and areas of improvement, a combined framework to evaluate both aspects in the design of urban metabolism projects is proposed. The framework aims at supporting scientists and practitioners in the development of collaborative research that can accommodate expectations as well as sustainability priorities and objectives of both parties.

Recent research demonstrates that urban metabolism studies hold ample scope for informing more sustainable urban planning and design. The assessment of the resource flows that are required to sustain the growth and maintenance of cities can allow gaining a clear picture of how cities operate to comply with environmental performance standards and to ensure that both human and ecosystem health are preserved. Green infrastructure (GI) plays a key role in enhancing both cities’ environmental performance and health. For example, GI interventions mitigate the Urban Heat Island effect (improved thermal comfort), reduce particulate matter concentration (healthier air quality), and sequestrate and store atmospheric carbon (climate change mitigation). Research on ecosystem services and the application of the concept in urban planning provides a growing evidence base that an understanding of provisioning and regulating services can facilitate more environmentally informed GI planning and design. The contribution of GI in enhancing human health and psychological wellbeing is also evidenced in recent studies valuing both material and immaterial benefits provided by urban ecosystems, including cultural ecosystem services. Therefore, the use of ecosystem service frameworks can help reveal and quantify the role of GI in fostering both urban environmental quality and the wellbeing of human populations. However, there remains little discussion of how health and wellbeing aspects can be integrated with environmental performance objectives. In this chapter, urban metabolism thinking is proposed as a way forward, providing analytical tools to inform environmentally-optimized strategies across the urban scales. Opportunities to foster integrated urban metabolism approaches that can inform more holistic GI planning are discussed. Finally, future research avenues to incorporate the multiple dimensions of human health and wellbeing into urban metabolism thinking are highlighted.
