Abstract

In the present work the effect of compressive stress on self-diffusion of Fe in nanocrystalline FeN(Zr) alloys has been investigated. Two different types of Fe64N26Zr10 samples, one without applied stress and another with applied compressive stress of 42 GPa, were deposited under identical conditions using magnetron sputtering. The stress has been applied to the sample by bending the substrate during the deposition using a three point bending device. The self-diffusivities of Fe were determined by measuring the broadening of 57Fe marker layers by Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry after annealing at 443 K, 483 K and 523 K for 1 hour. The activation energy and preexponential factor for Fe diffusion is comparatively higher in the stressed sample. The higher activation energy might be due to the fact that the system transforms into a more dense state when compressive stress is applied.

Abstract

We show using detailed magnetic and thermodynamic studies and theoretical calculations that the ground state of Ba3ZnIr2O9 is a realization of a novel spin-orbital liquid state. Our results reveal that Ba3ZnIr2O9 with Ir5+ (5d(4)) ions and strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) arrives very close to the elusive J = 0 state but each Ir ion still possesses a weak moment. Ab initio density functional calculations indicate that this moment is developed due to superexchange, mediated by a strong intradimer hopping mechanism. While the Ir spins within the structural Ir2O9 dimer are expected to form a spin-orbit singlet state (SOS) with no resultant moment, substantial frustration arising from interdimer exchange interactions induce quantum fluctuations in these possible SOS states favoring a spin-orbital liquid phase down to at least 100 mK.

Abstract

Lifetimes of high-spin states have been measured in the semi-magic (N= 50) nucleus 94Ru. Excited states in 94Ru were populated in the 58Ni(40Ca, 4p)94Ru* fusion-evaporation reaction at the Grand Accélérateur National d’Ions Lourds (GANIL) accelerator complex. DSAM lifetime analysis was performed on the Doppler broadened line shapes in energy spectra obtained from ?-rays emitted while the residual nuclei were slowing down in a thick 6mg/cm^2 metallic 58Ni target. In total eight excited-state lifetimes in the angular momentum range I= (13 - 20) ? have been measured, five of which were determined for the first time. Abstract

International audience; The importance of atomic structure to understand the superconducting β-Tungsten (W) thin films especially their critical transition temperature (Tc) and upper critical magnetic field Hc2(0) is reported. Here, Tc and Hc2(0) for a low thickness (~ 35 nm) film are found to be ~ 3.14 K and 10.72 T, whereas for a comparatively thicker (~ 60 nm) film, these are 1.38 K and 2.34 T, respectively. The β-phase is identified by grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction. The microstructure is probed by transmission electron microscopy, where high-resolution images manifest an improvement in crystallinity of the nanoscale grains in a disordered matrix with increasing film thickness. A drastic change in atomic structure corresponding to two different thicknesses is found to be associated with the change in oxygen concentration. Particularly, the existence of amorphous-W in the presence of β-W is revealed in 35 nm film, which is further supported by ab-initio calculations. Based on the atomic and microstructure, superconducting properties of the β-W films are analyzed and discussed.

Abstract

International audience; Thermoelectric performance largely depends on the reduction of lattice thermal conductivity (κL). The study of the thermal conductivity (κ) of a Sb2Te3/graphite nanocomposite system demonstrates ∼40% reduction in κL with graphite incorporation. A plausible explanation of intrinsic low κL observed in Sb2Te3 based system is presented by modeling experimental specific heat (Cp) data. Raman spectroscopy measurement combined to X-Ray diffraction data confirms the presence of graphite as separate phase in the composite sample. It is found that phonon scattering dominates heat transport mechanism in the nanostructured Sb2Te3/graphite composite. Large reduction in κL is accomplished by intensifying scattering rate of phonons via various sources. Graphite introduces effective scattering sources, i.e., defects of different dimensionalities in synthesized nanocomposite sample. Furthermore, graphite mediates phonon-phonon coupling and enhances lattice anharmonicity, which causes an intrinsic scattering of phonons with all frequencies in the Sb2Te3/graphite nanocomposite sample. Dislocation density and phonon anharmonicity of the synthesized samples are estimated from in depth analysis of temperature dependent synchrotron powder diffraction and Raman spectroscopic data. κL value as low as 0.8 W m−1K−1 at 300 K, achieved with graphite dispersion in Sb2Te3 based composite system makes the present comprehensive study an interesting concept to be developed in thermoelectric materials.
