Cognitive skills, such as innovative problem-solving, are hypothesized to aid animals in urban environments. However, the significance of innovation in wild populations, and its expression across individuals and socio-ecological conditions, is poorly understood. To identify how and when innovation arises in urban-dwelling species, we used advanced technologies and new testing and analytical methods to evaluate innovative problem-solving abilities of wild raccoons (Procyon lotor). We deployed multi-compartment puzzle boxes with either one or multiple solution types and identified raccoons using radio frequency identification. Raccoons solved these novel extractive foraging tasks, and their success was influenced by age and exploratory diversity. Successful raccoons always discovered multiple different solution types, highlighting flexible problem-solving. Using a unique, comparative sequence analysis approach, we found that variation in raccoon solving techniques was greater between individuals than within individuals, and this self-similarity intensified during times of competition. Finally, the inclusion of an easier solution in the multi-solution trials enabled previously unsuccessful raccoons to bootstrap their learning and successfully open multiple difficult solutions. Our study suggests that innovative problem-solving is probably influenced by many factors and has provided novel field and analytical methods, as well as new insights on the socio-ecological dynamics of urban populations.

PurposeAmong Latina breast cancer survivors, explore associations between rural/urban residence and health-related quality of life (HRQL), and whether associations are moderated by financial strain and low neighborhood cohesion.MethodsWe combined baseline data from two randomized controlled trials of a stress management intervention conducted among 151 urban and 153 rural dwelling Latinas with nonmetastatic breast cancer. Generalized linear models estimated associations between rural/urban status and HRQL (overall, emotional, social-family, physical, and functional well-being), and we examined moderation effects of financial strain and low neighborhood cohesion, controlling for age, marital status, and breast cancer characteristics.ResultsRural women reported better emotional (β = 1.85; 95% CI = 0.37, 3.33), functional (β = 2.23; 95% CI = 0.69, 3.77), and overall (β = 5.68; 95% CI = 1.12, 10.25) well-being than urban women, regardless of degree of financial strain or neighborhood cohesion; moderation effects were not statistically significant. Financial strain was inversely associated with emotional (β = -2.34; 95% CI = 3.63, -1.05), physical (β = -2.56; 95% CI = -4.12, -1.01), functional (β = -1.61; 95% CI = -2.96, -0.26), and overall (β = -6.67; 95% CI = -10.96, -2.98) well-being. Low neighborhood cohesion was inversely associated with emotional (β = -1.27; 95% CI = -2.50, -0.04), social-family (β = -1.72; 95% CI = -3.02, -0.42), functional (β = -1.63; 95% CI = -2.92, -0.34), and overall (β = -5.95; 95% CI = 9.76, -2.14) well-being.ConclusionsRural Latina breast cancer survivors reported better emotional, functional and overall well-being than their urban counterparts. Greater financial strain and less neighborhood cohesion were associated with worse HRQL on most domains regardless of rural/urban context.Implications for cancer survivorsInterventions that focus on increasing perceived neighborhood cohesion and reducing or better managing financial strain, could help improve Latina cancer survivors' well-being.

This study investigates the relationship between temporal changes in temperatures characterizing local urban heat islands (UHIs) and heat-related illnesses (HRIs) in seven major cities of California. UHIs, which are a phenomenon that arises in the presence of impervious surfaces or the lack of green spaces exacerbate the effects of extreme heat events, can be measured longitudinally using satellite products. The two objectives of this study were: (1) to identify temperature trends in local temperatures to characterize UHIs across zip code tabulation areas (ZCTAs) in the seven observed cities over a 22-year period and (2) to use propensity score and inverse probability weighting to achieve exchangeability between different types of ZCTAs and assess the difference in hospital admissions recorded as HRIs attributable to temporal changes in UHIs. We use monthly land surface temperature data derived from MODIS Terra imagery from the summer months (June-September) from 2000 to 2022. We categorized ZCTAs (into three groups) based on their monthly land surface temperature trends. Of the 216 ZCTAs included in this study, the summertime land surface temperature trends of 43 decreased, while 161 remained unchanged, and 12 increased. Los Angeles had the greatest number of decreased ZCTAs, San Diego and San Jose had the highest number of increased ZCTAs. To analyze the number of monthly HRI attributable to changes in UHI, we used inverse probability of treatment weighting to analyze the difference in HRI between the years of 2006 and 2017 which were two major extreme heat events over the entire State. We observed an average reduction of 3.2 (95 % CI: 0.5; 5.9) HRIs per month and per ZCTAs in decreased neighborhoods as compared to unchanged. This study emphasizes the importance of urban climate adaptation strategies to mitigate the intensity and prevalence of UHIs to reduce health risks related to heat.

American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities are disproportionately affected by the opioid epidemic. AI/AN emerging adults (ages 18-25) in urban areas are at particularly high risk, with the overdose death rate among urban-dwelling AI/AN people 1.4 times higher than rural-dwelling AI/AN people. Despite these challenges, there are no evidence-based culturally tailored prevention or intervention programs to address opioid, alcohol and other drug use among urban AI/AN emerging adults. This study focused on understanding AI/AN emerging adults experiences with two culturally tailored programs addressing opioid, cannabis, and alcohol use as part of the randomized controlled trial for Traditions and Connections for Urban Native Americans (TACUNA) in order to enhance feasibility of this intervention. Using a convergent mixed methods design at 3-month follow-up, we collected satisfaction and experience ratings and written narratives (total n = 162; intervention n = 77; control n = 85) from a sample of urban-dwelling AI/AN emerging adults who participated in both programs. We analyzed data through simultaneous examination of qualitative and quantitative data. The quantitative ratings show that both programs were rated highly. The qualitative data contextualized these ratings, illustrating pathways through which specific components were perceived to cause desired or observed behavioral change in participants. Among the elements that mattered most to these participants were the convenience of the virtual format, having a comfortable and safe space to share personal stories, and learning new information about their social networks. Negative comments focused on workshop length and inconvenient scheduling. This is one of the first studies to explore participant satisfaction and experience with culturally tailored substance use programming among a historically marginalized and understudied population. It is important to consider the voices of urban-dwelling AI/AN people in program development because hidden factors, such as limited financial resources, limited time, and misalignment with cultural values may prevent existing programs from being feasible.

Emerging adulthood shapes personal, professional, and overall well-being through identity exploration. This study addresses a gap in the minority identity literature by investigating how urban AI/AN emerging adults think about their identity and discussing challenges and protective factors associated with exploring their identity holistically. This mixed-methods study created a sampling framework based on discrimination experiences, cultural identity, social network support, mental health, and problematic substance use. We recruited 20 urban AI/AN emerging adults for interviews. We sought to gain deeper insights into their experiences and discussions surrounding identity formation and exploration. We provide descriptives for demographic characteristics and conducted a thematic analysis of the qualitative data from the interviews. Four themes emerged: a) being an urban AI/AN emerging adult means recognizing that ones identity is multifaceted; b) a multifaceted identity comes with tension of living in multiple worlds; c) the trajectory of ones identity grows over time to a deeper desire to connect with Native American culture; and d) understanding ones Native American background affects ones professional trajectory. Findings underscore the importance of developing programs to support well-being and identity development through cultural connection for urban AI/AN emerging adults.

Food deserts are typically associated with limiting health variables, which can contribute to poor nutrition and result in negative medical conditions among residents. Patterns in the differences and similarities in the experiences of residents within urban and rural food deserts are caused by a myriad of factors. This paper will display how all three of the referenced studies conducted on different urban and rural food desert locations within the U.S. indicate that rural residents face a greater amount of health disparities due to variables like affordability and income, distance, time of day, and social and demographic variables–all of which can affect one's nutritional intake. Researching and exploring comparisons between various urban and rural food deserts within the U.S. can indirectly lead to possible intervention and alleviation methods to improve access to nutritional foods. Research-based solutions that tackle nutritional intake in both urban and rural food deserts could effectively reduce and potentially mitigate a multitude of negative health consequences caused by living in a food desert, those of which tend to be made up of low-income residents and people of color. A more condensed food desert map within a singular state such as California was initially considered for a smaller area to analyze, but many available studies on food deserts conduct their research from different locations in the U.S.

Gender and social dimensions of access to and use of water resources are often overlooked in policy and programming despite their importance in shaping water security. This study examines factors affecting water security in urban Pakistan through a gender lens. We surveyed 560 men and women in two towns in Islamabad and Rawalpindi facing water and sanitation challenges. Through a binary logit model and marginal effects analysis, we analyzed the relationship between water security and multiple variables, including gender, education, age, employment status, payment for water, urban wealth quintile, drinking water source, individual water concern level, water satisfaction, and water quality perception. While more than 50 percent of both genders experience water insecurity, the prevalence of water insecurity is notably higher among women. Men in the surveyed population had higher levels of employment wealth, and education levels compared to women. The regression analysis across both genders reveals that paying for drinking water negatively and significantly impacts water security, while concern about future water issues, satisfaction with drinking water, and water quality significantly and positively impact water security levels. For women specifically, access to improved drinking water sources higher education levels, and employment significantly improve their water security level, underscoring the importance of promoting women's education and economic empowerment. For men, age and wealth levels emerged as significant factors impacting their water security, with older men more vulnerable to water insecurity than younger men and women. These findings underscore the complex interplay of individual, social and structural dynamics shaping water security experiences, emphasizing the need for gender-responsive and intersectional approaches to water interventions in urban Pakistan and beyond Equitable water policies and programs necessitate the collection of more disaggregated data. This study marks the first application of the Individual Water Insecurity Experiences (IWIE) Scale used in Pakistan's urban context with recommendations for its broader implementation to improve decision-making that can lead to sustainable water solutions across gender and social groups. Escalating demands on urban water sources present a formidable challenge to practitioners in environmental and social change to more effectively promote water conservation strategies. This study was based on pilot project learnings and aimed to determine whether a sign displaying weekly local rainfall data and turfgrass water needs could effectively influence a Florida (USA) community's water conservation. Three core data sources/methods were used: pre- and post-surveys, water utility data compared between treatment and control communities, and qualitative post-intervention feedback. The findings illustrate nuanced outcomes including the adoption of the rainfall sign as a central information source and some knowledge increases, contrasted with decreased engagement in the target conservation practice, no significant changes in water usage, and unfavorable perceptions of project approaches. Successes and failures of this pilot can guide professionals leading future residential conservation initiatives, which should better engage the target community and incorporate their ideas and needs into the project design. Differences between urban, suburban, and rural voting outcomes in U.S. presidential elections is a common area of both academic research and news media analysis. Most scrutiny and mapping of the geography of the presidential vote is done at the county scale, with counties described as either urban, suburban, or rural. Small towns are often assumed to mirror surrounding rural areas, with little research examining election results and historic patterns in these places. This is understandable: Accurate spatial data at a fine scale for national elections is difficult and, in some states, impossible, to obtain. Research presented here (in states where precinct‐level data is readily available) indicates that while most small towns indeed voted Republican in the 2020 U.S. election, a closer inspection indicates that they are more Democratic‐leaning than surrounding rural areas. This research indicates the value of studying these fine‐scale data as well as the challenges faced in acquiring these data and resulting lack of research and visualization of these differences. The proportion of people living in urban areas is growing globally. Understanding how to manage urban biodiversity, ecosystem functions, and ecosystem services is becoming more important. Biodiversity can increase ecosystem functioning in non‐urban systems. However, few studies have reviewed the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in urban areas, which differ in species compositions, abiotic environments, food webs, and turnover rates. We reviewed evidence of biodiversity–ecosystem functioning relationships in urban environments and assessed factors that influence the relationship direction. Based on 70 studies, relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning were more positive than negative in urban areas, especially for pollination and nutrient cycling and retention. Surprisingly, positive and negative relationships between biodiversity and biomass production and storage were equally not statistically different, perhaps due to extensive plant management in urban areas. The number of studies and geographic coverage of our review was still insufficient to provide a general predictive framework for when biodiversity positively impacts ecosystem functioning. We identify gaps and opportunities to improve urban biodiversity–ecosystem functioning research and discuss how our findings can improve urban green space management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Over the last decades, bee biodiversity has dropped sharply due to land use change, including urbanization. To contrast this, recent research has pointed to cities as a hotspot for bees. Because of this ambiguity, a scoping review has been conducted to examine the urban characteristics that impact bees and how bees are impacted. A total of 276 articles were analyzed against landscape and local habitat characteristics. The key findings include first that natural areas are more valuable for bees since biodiversity levels are higher. Second, urban areas generally score better than agricultural and rural areas. Third, plant biodiversity positively influences bee biodiversity. Fourth, the urban environment strongly affects some bee traits and the proportion of native bees. For making cities bee friendly and bee inclusive, we recommend to maintain natural areas, connect natural areas to urban ecosystems, encourage floral abundance and diversity and increasing the size of urban green areas overall. Objective: Describe the ear and hearing outcomes in Aboriginal infants in an Australian urban area. Design: Aboriginal infants enrolled in the Djaalinj Waakinj prospective cohort study had ear health screenings at ages 2-4, 6-8 and 12-18 months and audiological assessment at ∼12 months of age. Sociodemographic, environmental characteristics, otoscopy, otoacoustic emissions, tympanometry and visual reinforcement audiometry data were collected. Study Sample: 125 infants were enrolled in the study; 67 completed audiological assessment, 62, 54, and 58 of whom attended ear screenings at 2-4, 6-8 and 12-18 months. Results: Of the children that attended the audiological assessment, 36.5%, 50% and 64.3% of infants had otitis media (OM) at 2-4, 6-8 and 12-18 months. Using a 10 dB correction factor, 44.8% of infants had hearing loss (HL) (≥ 25 dB HL) at ∼ 12 months of age. More males (X2=5.4 (1df, p = 0.02)) and infants with OM at audiological assessment (X2=5.8 (1df, p = 0.02)) had HL. More infants that used a pacifier at 12-18 months of age had HL (X2=4.7 (1df, p = 0.03)). Conclusion: Aboriginal infants in an urban area have high rates of HL and OM, which requires early surveillance and timely treatment to reduce the medical and developmental impacts of OM and HL. Understanding differences in post-legalization patterns of marijuana between rural and urban environments has the potential to go a long way towards targeting intervention efforts aimed at reducing marijuana use disorders. Data come from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH, 2015–2019, N = 210,392). Survey-weighted multivariable linear and logistic regression analyses were used to assess the relationship between key marijuana-related variables and the status of medical marijuana use in each state with interaction terms for rural versus urban status. Among the entire sample, the prevalence of marijuana abuse and dependence were 0.7% and 1.8%, respectively. Among marijuana users, the average number of days on which marijuana was used was 131.3 (SD = 136.3) days. Those living in states with legalized medical marijuana reported use on a greater number of days (B = 10.69; 95% CI: 5.26, 16.13) with frequency of use increasing as rurality increased, compared to a core based statistical area (CBSA) of ≥1 million: a CBSA of <1 million residents (B = 23.02; 95% CI: 17.38, 28.66) and non-CBSA (B = 37.62; 95% CI: 22.66, 52.58). We also observed lower odds of driving under the influence of marijuana in states where medical marijuana was legal (aOR = 0.86; 95% CI: 0.77, 0.95). We observed an increase in the frequency of marijuana use and a decrease in driving under the influence of marijuana in states with legalized medical marijuana use relative to those states where it remained illegal. We also observed key moderation based on rural-urban status. This body of results suggests that problematic marijuana use may be on the rise following the legalization of marijuana use, but also that corresponding protective attitudes exist. We examined rural and urban prevalence and correlates of overweight/obesity among women of reproductive age using survey data from Nigeria. Overweight and obesity prevalence increased from 16.1% and 6.1% in 2008 to 18.2% and 10.0% in 2018, while underweight prevalence consistently averaged at 12%. Regardless of the residential setting, age, marital status, education, occupation, wealth, and year were associated with higher risk of overweight/obesity, whereas breastfeeding showed a protective effect. Unique risk factors for overweight/obesity in urban areas were higher parity and female-headed households, while ethnicity, media exposure, and state of residence were unique risk factors in rural areas. If nature is socially constructed, how do cultural producers construct it? Few social spaces materialize social constructions of nature as powerfully and as directly as parks, which represent cultural beliefs about nature's form and function. This paper considers how landscape architects and other social actors involved in creating contemporary urban park landscapes think about nature and decide how to represent it through cultural objects. Drawing on the analysis of three case studies – New York's High Line, Chicago's Bloomingdale Trail/606, and Houston's Buffalo Bayou Park – I consider the aesthetic judgments that cultural producers make about nature when designing and placing value on park landscapes. I find that in the cultural conditions of the twenty-first century, three aesthetic judgments prevail, converging to create a particular vision of nature that is both highly valued and tightly linked to racialized currents of cultural and economic capital. These aesthetic judgments prize nature as local, wild, and imbricated with urban space. They structure what I term "environmental authenticity": the idea that socially valued forms of nature are rooted in classical understandings of a socially unmediated, nonhuman nature whose agency in creating landscapes is minimally violated by obvious human cultivation and that exists, seemingly organically, in postindustrial settings. Background Methods Results Conclusions Skin concerns are frequent among urban‐living Aboriginal children, yet specialist dermatology consultations are limited with studies highlighting the need for improved cultural security. Through newly established paediatric dermatology clinics at two urban Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs), we aimed to describe clinic and patient data, including disease frequencies and associations, to inform dermatology service provision and advocacy.A prospective cohort study of Aboriginal children and young people (CYP, 0–18 years) attending Aboriginal Health Practitioner (AHP) co‐ordinated paediatric dermatology clinics at two urban ACCHOs.Data were collected from 32 clinics over 19 months, with 335 episodes of care and a mean attendance rate of 74%. From 78 new patients, 72 (92%) were recruited into the study, only one of whom had previously received dermatologist assessment. Eczema, tinea or acne accounted for 47% (34/72) of referrals, and 60% of patients received their first appointment within 4 weeks of referral. In 47/72 (65%) consultations, the GP referral and dermatologist diagnosis concurred. The most frequent diagnoses (primary or secondary) at first consultation were atopic dermatitis (26%, 19/72), dermatophyte infections (25%, 18/72), acne (21%, 15/72), bacterial skin infections (18%, 13/72) and post‐inflammatory dyspigmentation (18%, 13/72). Three categories of the 2022 Australasian College of Dermatologists curriculum (infections, eczema/dermatitis, pigmentary disorders) accounted for 59% of all diagnoses.This study highlights the specialist dermatology needs of urban‐living Aboriginal CYP. ACCHO‐embedded dermatology clinics co‐ordinated by AHPs demonstrated benefits for Aboriginal CYP in accessing care. Opportunities to embed dermatology practice within ACCHOs should be prioritised. Background: Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) is conventionally associated with inadequate sunlight exposure. Ironically, recent evidence suggests a rising prevalence in urban areas of tropical regions like Sri Lanka, where comprehensive data are unavailable. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of low vitamin D status in urban adults and its impact on serum calcium. Methods: A population-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 1260 adults aged 35–74 years, living in Colombo, the most urban district in Sri Lanka. They were recruited from 63 administrative divisions, using multi-stage, probability-proportionate-to-size, cluster sampling. Non-fasting venous blood was collected without tourniquet. Low vitamin D (< 30.0 ng/mL), VDD (< 20 ng/mL) and vitamin D insufficiency (20.0–29.9 ng/mL) were determined using chemiluminescence assay method, and serum calcium using Calcium Gen2 reagent. Results: Among the population (53.3% females; mean age = 51.8 years), the prevalence of low vitamin D was 93.9% (95% CI: 92.5–95.2). This was primarily due to VDD (67.5%; 95% CI: 64.9.0–70.1%), with some insufficiency (26.4%; 95% CI: 24.0–28.9%). Most VDD cases (53.9.0%) were 'mild' (10.0- < 20.0 ng/mL) in severity, with fewer 'moderate' (12.8%) and 'severe' (0.8%) cases. Prevalence of VDD was highest in females, aged 35–44-years, living in 'highly urban' areas and of Tamil ethnicity. Further, VDD showed a decreasing trend with older age groups, while it was significantly more prevalent in females than males (72.6% vs. 61.7%; p < 0.01), across all age groups. Low serum calcium levels were observed in 9.8% of adults with low vitamin D, compared to 22.4% with normal vitamin D, implying that there could be factors other than vitamin D in maintaining serum calcium levels. Conclusions: Colombo District, representing urban settings in Sri Lanka faces a high prevalence of low vitamin D, primarily VDD, with higher rates in females, younger individuals and highly urban areas. These findings challenge assumptions about tropical regions being guaranteed of optimal vitamin D levels; and underscore the need for national vitamin D supplementation and food fortification programs, especially in high-risk urban settings in South Asian countries like Sri Lanka. Be it the 1873 World’s Fair in Vienna, which established the city's status as a link between the Occident and Orient, or the very first Great Exhibition in 1851 in London, which showcased the then British empire to a global public and the world to its domestic visitors. World’s fairs have been and are still an indispensable part of a shared human history as well as an indicator of a country's economic and cultural relevance on a global scale. They are undoubtedly politically motivated drivers of collective memories and, in turn, nation-building processes. This is why they are not only publicly discussed and thoroughly documented in archives but also often manifested in buildings that long outlast these events and themes but continue to tell their tales. This article elaborates on the ways in which world’s fairs (or expos) have been used as catalysts to develop cities and how they themselves – though ephemeral phenomena – ultimately found their way into urban landscapes and historiography. Moreover, based on his own empirical studies on the last two expos of Shanghai (2010) and Milan (2015), the author elaborates on the placemaking procedures that precede and follow these mega-events, reflecting on the ensuing public discourse to (de)legitimate them, its limitations, and effects on the urban legacy of the aforementioned expos. Background: Regional evidence on the role of vitamin D in the prevention of COVID-19 and its sequalae remains inconclusive and sparse. Objective: This study aimed to determine the association of COVID-19 status and severity with vitamin D among adults in Colombo District, Sri Lanka. Methods: A sex-matched case–control study was conducted among 104 RT-PCR-confirmed COVID-19 patients recruited from two major hospitals designated as COVID-19 treating centres and 104 RT-PCR negative adults recruited from the catchment area of the two hospitals. Non-fasting blood samples obtained from cases upon hospital admission and from controls upon release from 14-day quarantine period were analysed for serum 25(OH)D using chemiluminescence assay. Serum level < 50.0 nmol/L was identified as vitamin D deficiency (VDD). Results: Cases were older while the controls had fewer persons with co-morbidities. Cases (median = 30.0; IQR = 21.2 nmol/L) had significantly lower 25(OH)D compared to controls (median = 35.9; IQR = 28.3 nmol/L) (p = 0.02), which persisted after adjustments (p = 0.026), along with Sinhalese ethnicity (p < 0.001). VDD was significantly more prevalent in cases (83.7% vs. 71.2%; crude odds ratio (OR) = 2.1; 95% CI 1.1, 4.1); but was not an independent predictor of COVID-19 status (adjusted OR = 1.9; 95% CI 0.6, 5.7). A lower 25(OH)D level was observed in moderate/severe cases (median = 28.0; IQR = 20.4 nmol/L) vs. mild (median = 39.8; IQR = 19.0 nmol/L), however, neither low serum concentrations nor deficiency showed an independent relationship with severity (p > 0.05). Diabetes was the sole predictor of COVID-19 severity (p = 0.022). Conclusions: Vitamin D has potential as a primary preventive strategy in preventing COVID-19 like infections, but not as a secondary preventive strategy to reduce its severity. Despite (or perhaps because of) the staggering scale and pace of global change, the concept of the Anthropocene eludes discrete classification. There is widespread consensus that conditions associated with the Anthropocene, including rapid biodiversity loss and climate change, must be addressed if we are to enjoy ongoing and rich experiences. At the crux of human impacts is urban living as of 2024 nearly 60% of people live in cities. Human societies are tightly interconnected with each other and surrounding ecosystems, but for citydwellers, these connections may seem abstract. A failure to appreciate and foster such connections can have human and environmental health repercussions. We present a concept for a meal featuring local wild foods that could only be appropriately served under regionally ameliorated Anthropocene conditions. By presenting this hypothetical "solution", we seek a common ground that spans human (and non-human) cultures and behaviors, and a concept that can be extended to any community. The simplicity of the "Anthropocene meal" belies three primary challenges: improvements to urban design, maintenance of ecosystem health, and shifting cultural attitudes. However, these barriers are quantifiable and may be addressed within annual to decadal timelines, making the Anthropocene meal a broadly achievable goal, and thus a valid source of optimism in a time of great uncertainty. The eastern population of monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) has dramatically declined in the last few decades, which is largely attributed to a loss of milkweed habitat in agricultural areas. Residential land in metropolitan areas has the potential to provide a significant source of the milkweed needed to support the monarch population. To examine if and how urban milkweed patches can support monarch butterflies, we worked with community scientists in the Chicago metropolitan area to monitor monarch eggs and caterpillars in yards and community gardens. We hypothesized that the largest numbers of eggs (i.e. gardens that were most attractive to monarchs) would be observed in patches that were older, had a high abundance of milkweed, contained more than one species of milkweed including Asclepias syriaca (common milkweed) and/or A. incarnata (swamp milkweed), and had a large diversity of nectar plants. All patches were assessed at their peak egg count each year, which ranged from zero to 170 eggs in a given observation. To determine which characteristics were most influential to egg presence, we examined patches where eggs were present or absent during this peak observation. For abundance, we divided these peak observations into whether or not the egg counts were in the top 20% in a given year, excluding patches where eggs were absent, and assessed their patch characteristics. Our results show that patch age and presence of A. syriaca affected whether patches contained eggs or not. We also found that patches with the largest number of eggs observed tended to have A. syriaca, more milkweed plants, and a higher diversity of blooming plant species. The data we collected from community scientists in the Chicago area has enhanced our understanding of how urban gardeners can create effective breeding habitats for monarch butterflies. By planting Asclepias syriaca within its natural range, along with other native milkweed species and a diverse selection of flowering plants, individuals can create gardens that serve as excellent habitats for monarchs and other pollinators. This paper examines the adoption of brutalism in the work of Israeli landscape architects. Since the 1960s, Brutalism made its way from Europe to Israel by leading architects at the time. In parallel, landscape architects also considered Brutalism appropriate to the young state, and the use of concrete as a cheap and readily available construction material. They demonstrated creativity by constructing plazas, outdoor housing complexes, playgrounds and parks, essentially laying a cement carpet across the landscape. The absence of a well-established local outdoor material tradition, coupled with climatic and maintenance considerations, encouraged the burgeoning prominence of outdoor Brutalism in Israel. Expenditure involves allocating money to various items or services to satisfy our needs from different aspects of life. To understand the consumption and expenditure patterns, this study aims to analyze the spending habits of the B40 youth group living in urban areas, specifically in Kuala Lumpur, by examining their specific needs. To achieve the objectives of this study, a research framework on the prioritized needs during shopping or expenditure has been established. These needs include basic needs, protection and health, family, religion, and leisure. Subsequently, the findings of the study indicate that there are differences in priorities during shopping were found, as indicated by respondents to ensure survival in the city. Although basic needs such as home ownership are often discussed, the unaffordability of prices, especially in urban areas, has resulted in home buying not being a major contributor to expenditure breakdowns. This suggests that the type of settlement contributes to the lifestyle and spending habits practiced by youth in urban areas. Background: Misinformation about Hypertension is widely prevalent in our patient population and works against effective management of Hypertension and its complications Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted on patients reporting to Outpatient clinic in an Urban South Indian tertiary level hospital. In the pilot study, 100 Hypertensive patients were interviewed and the most common myths were tabulated. In phase II, 300 patients were interviewed and the prevalence of the myths studied. The results were then analyzed. Results: The study showed that a large number of myths were prevalent in the patient population. Most common myths were that Hypertension is not a serious disease and that non-consumption of table salt is enough treatment and that high BP always produces symptoms. The study found that myths are common in all sections of our society, even in graduates and post-graduates. The study also found myths decrease as the duration of Hypertension increases. Conclusions : This study concludes that a large number of myths about Hypertension are prevalent in the patient population in urban South India. INTRODUCTION The occurrence of maternal mortality is a significant indicator of a country's economic progress. The current study seeks to examine the causes of maternal deaths in a tertiary care hospital. OBJECTIVES To gather data and insights about the factors and issues contributing to maternal mortality in a tertiary care hospital in an urban setting, identify any potentially avoidable factors, and utilize the findings to prevent future maternal deaths. METHODS This was a 4 years retrospective study. The medical records of all maternal deaths occurring over a period of 4 years between January 2019 and November 2022 were reviewed and correlated with causes of death. RESULTS MMR in our study was 466.2/1 lakh live birth, most of the deaths(36.3%) were in the age group of 23-27 years, 61.3% cases were from rural areas, major immediate cause of death being sepsis (22.5%), major antecedent cause of death found was hypertensive disorders(27.4%), 44.8% of deaths were between 24 hours- <7 days of admission. Community violence and crime are significant public health problems with serious and lasting effects on young people, families, and communities. This violence and crime have significant ripple effects, affecting not just those who are directly physically injured, but also those who witness violent episodes, those who have friends or loved ones killed or injured, and those who must everyday navigate streets that they know have been frequent sites of serious violence and crime. The current study presents evidence of the impact that a data-driven, collective impact approach — the Communities that Care prevention system — can have on violence and crime outcomes within a large urban, high-burden community. Established as one of the national Youth Violence Prevention Centers (YVPC) funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Chicago Center for Youth Violence Prevention is among the first to implement the CTC approach in a large, urban community. The introduction of exotic species constitutes one of the main threats to biodiversity around the world. Spathodea campanulata is a tree species cultivated for its ornamental value, having toxic nectar with insecticidal properties, particularly against bees. In Argentina, its effects on the native entomofauna are unknown. This study explores the mortality effects of S. campanulata on the native entomofauna in a green area of Corrientes city. From the study of three trees, the percentage of flowers with dead entomofauna specimens inside was analyzed and the abundance of the taxa represented was determined. Diversity indices, species richness, inventory completeness and range-abundance curve were calculated. The results revealed the native bee Scaptotrigona jujuyensis was the most abundant, with a total of 46 specimens out of a total of 151 specimens, among which were founded representatives of the orders Himenoptera, Diptera, Coleoptera, Hemiptera, and Araneae. Reconstructing the reverse flood of natural resource elements in rural and urban regional systems is the basic form of requirement for realizing urban-rural integration. Taking target selection-realistic obstacles-institutional demand-system construction as the logical main line, starting from the current situation of natural resource element allocation under the framework of urban-rural integrated development, it sorted out the problems existing in the urban-rural integrated development of natural resources such as asymmetrical property rights design, inconsistent bearing plans of various types, lack of natural resource revenue sharing mechanism, and poor asset flow channels and trading systems, with unified layout, power return, paid use, and revenue sharing as the core. Guided by promoting the rational allocation of urban and rural factors, the integration of infrastructure, the equalization of urban and rural public services, and the integrated development of primary, secondary, and tertiary industries, from a practical point of view, a policy system is built for natural resource factors to support the integrated development of urban and rural areas. Purpose: Many studies have documented an adverse impact of the pandemic on women´s mental health. This cross-sectional study aims to explore associations between women's perceived impact of lockdowns and curfews on their mental health and their residential location, along with other contextual and individual factors. Methods: Using data from the Flash Eurobarometer 2712 "Women in times of COVID-19", conducted between January 25 and February 3, 2022, across the 27 Member States of the European Union (n = 23,671), this study applied bivariate tests and stratified models based on respondent location (rural areas, small or medium-sized towns and urban areas). The exploration sought predictors influencing the perceived mental health impact, encompassing five individual characteristics (age, disability, employment status, educational attainment, and household type), perceptions of violence against women, and country of residence. The dependent variable was assessed subjectively, measured on a scale from 1 (minor negative impact) to 5 (major negative impact). Results: Women living in urban areas generally reported a higher perceived negative impact on mental health compared to women in rural areas or in small/medium-sized towns. Age and disability were significantly linked to perceiving a negative impact on mental health. Similar adjusted odds ratios for age were observed across rural areas (aOR 0.97, 95% CI = 0.97–0.98), small or medium-sized towns (aOR 0.98, 95% CI = 0.97–0.98), and urban areas (aOR 0.97, 95% CI = 0.97–0.98). In terms of disability, the odds were higher in rural areas (aOR 1.44, 95% CI = 1.20–1.73) than in urban ones (aOR 1.36, 95% CI = 1.15–1.62). Among women residing in urban areas, those in childless couples were less likely to perceive a negative impact on mental health (aOR 0.89, 95% CI = 0.80–0.99) compared to women in couples with children. Respondents perceiving increased violence against women due to COVID-19 were more likely to perceive a negative impact on mental health, with higher odds ratios in rural areas (aOR 1.56, 95% CI = 1.40–1.74) compared to urban areas (aOR 1.29, 95% CI = 1.17–1.41). Differences across countries were also found. Conclusion: The perceived impact of lockdowns and curfews on mental health exhibited variance between urban and rural areas. These disparities were influenced by individual characteristics such as age, disability, or household type, as well as the effects of COVID-19 on violence against women and contextual variables like country of residence. Burn patients in rural areas may encounter poorer outcomes associated with barriers to care; however, residence has not been studied in a large sample. The association between rural-versus-urban residence and outcomes after burn was examined using the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database. Using the 2019 NIS database, patients over 18 years with a primary diagnosis of burn or corrosive injury were included. Level of urbanization was categorized into six groups. Outcomes after burn such as in-hospital mortality, multifactorial shock, prolonged mechanical ventilation, length of stay, and total costs were analyzed after adjusting for demographic factors and hospital characteristics. We included 4671 records, which represented a weighted population of 23,085 patients. Rural residence was associated with higher percentage of prior transfer but not in-hospital mortality. Compared to the most urbanized counties, encounters from the most rural counties were associated with higher odds of shock (aOR:2.62, 99% CI: 1.04–6.56, p = 0.007). Burn encounters from less urbanized counties did not experience differences in mortality, rates of skin grafting, prolonged mechanical ventilation, length of stay, or overall costs. However, odds of shock were higher among the least urbanized counties. Despite improved triage and transportation systems across the US, disparities and challenges exist for burn patients from rural residence. • Rural patients experience different barriers to care than urban or sub-urban counterparts. • In the NIS database, rural residence was associated higher likelihood of developing shock (of all types). • Transfer from a non-acute care hospital could be associated with higher odds of morbidity including shock. • Rural residence was not associated with increased in-hospital mortality, rates of skin grafting or increased cost. • Time from injury to treatment at a burn center is still needed to understand optimal care for rural patients. This study explores the impact of the COVID-19-induced economic crisis on tribal street vendors in Aizawl, India, using the framework of resilience theory. The paper uses a case-study approach to examine how street vendors recouped their economic losses after the relaxed lockdown phase during the region's most celebrated Christmas and New Year festivals. A total of 74 street vendors were interviewed for this study using a semi-structured questionnaire. The study discusses that despite the relaxation of lockdowns, vendors faced extreme challenges in earning their daily wages, causing an inability to satisfy basic requirements like food, paying rent, and experiencing harsher workplace conditions. We observe that street vendors had heterogeneous motives toward street vending and were not driven by a single theoretical perspective. We present that most street vendors during the lockdowns reflect resilience in their businesses, socioeconomic, and workplace conditions through their indigenous coping mechanisms and social networking. We find that street vendors displayed entrepreneurial qualities during the lockdowns by either changing the goods they sold or how they were sold before the pandemic. The study recommends different economic and financial policies for street vendors at the ground level such as improving basic workplace amenities, safety, and awareness among street vendors and consumers. This paper provides insight into how the conceptualization of urban knowledge sharing has developed. Based on a structured review and categorization of the literature, we identify three forms of knowledge sharing in and between cities that are distinctly different: knowledge transfer, knowledge exchange , and knowledge co-creation. We find that the three forms have different boosts and barriers, whereby the complexities of knowledge sharing and hence the capacities required of the actors are lowest for knowledge transfer and highest for knowledge co-creation. We would therefore like to qualify the recent emphasis given in literature to co-creation; with its complexities and required capacities, it is not to be considered a panacea for solving all urban problems. We propose a model within which knowledge transfer and exchange are more suitable for less wicked problems and may sometimes fruitfully reduce complexities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research provides the first evidence on how labour supply and earnings may adjust to the expansion of insurance benefits under the 2014 Social Insurance Law reform. The data for this study come from the Vietnam Labour Force Surveys. Both difference-in-differences and fixed-effect models are used. The estimated results reveal negative reform effects on the work duration and earnings of both sexes and for both rural and urban areas. They also point out some definite effects on different groups of local and migrant workers. However, little evidence on sick leave impact is found. The link between social insurance status and the labour market outcomes is scrutinized as well. The findings indicate that urban workers of both sexes benefit from accessing to compulsory insurance with respect to earnings, but only rural female workers do it. Brilliant, diverse colour ornaments of birds were one of the crucial cues that led Darwin to the idea of sexual selection. Although avian colouration plays many functions, including concealment, thermoregulation, or advertisement as a distasteful prey, a quality‐signalling role in sexual selection has attracted most research attention. Sexually selected ornaments are thought to be more susceptible to external stressors than naturally selected traits, and as such, they might be used as a test for environmental quality. For this reason, the last two decades have seen numerous studies on the impact of anthropogenic pollution on the expression of various avian colour traits. Herein, we provide the first meta‐analytical summary of these results and examine whether there is an interaction between the mechanism of colour production (carotenoid‐based, melanin‐based and structural) and the type of anthropogenic factor (categorised as heavy metals, persistent organic pollutants, urbanisation, or other). Following the assumption of heightened condition dependence of ornaments under sexual selection, we also expected the magnitude of effect sizes to be higher in males. The overall effect size was close to significance and negative, supporting a general detrimental impact of anthropogenic pollutants on avian colouration. In contrast to expectations, there was no interaction between pollution types and colour‐producing mechanisms. Yet there were significant differences in sensitivity between colour‐producing mechanisms, with carotenoid‐based colouration being the most affected by anthropogenic environmental disturbances. Moreover, we observed no significant tendency towards heightened sensitivity in males. We identified a publication gap on structural colouration, which, compared to pigment‐based colouration, remains markedly understudied and should thus be prioritised in future research. National lockdowns and containment measures to control the spread of COVID-19 led to increased unemployment, lower household incomes and reduced access to affordable and nutritious foods globally. This study aimed to examine changes and correlates of household food insecurity experience and mitigation strategies adopted in peri-urban Peru during the COVID-19 pandemic. Low income households with children age < 2 years in Lima and Huánuco participated in three repeated cross-sectional surveys from 2020 to 2022 (n = 759). We assessed changes in household food insecurity experience using the Food Insecurity Experience Scale. Correlates of moderate-severe food insecurity were analysed using univariate and multivariable linear mixed-effect regressions. We also assessed perceived impacts of the pandemic on livelihoods, coping strategies and receipt of financial or food assistance. Moderate-severe food insecurity was 47.0% in 2020 (survey 1) decreasing to 31.1% in 2022 (survey 3). In adjusted analyses, food insecurity was higher in households with perceived reduced income (β = 12.69 [6.82; 18.56]); in the lower socio-economic status (SES) tertiles (compared to the relatively highest SES tertile; middle tertile (β = 20.91 [9.89; 31.93]), lowest tertile (β = 39.37 [28.35; 50.40]); in households with ≥ 2 children < 5 years (β = 8.78 [2.05; 15.50]); and in Lima (compared to Huánuco; β = 10.47 [1.27; 19.67]). Food insecurity improved more among the relatively lowest SES compared to the relatively highest SES households between survey 1 and 3 (interaction p = 0.007). In conclusion, almost half of households experienced moderate-severe food insecurity mid-pandemic with greater risk observed in the most socio-economically disadvantaged households. Urban air quality assessment in regard to biogenic emissions such as airborne pollen grains (PGs) is indispensable in the urban environment which significantly affects human health, climates, ecosystems, and energy production. Dispersion and deposition of PGs because of resuspension events (ReSE) are investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The mechanisms in PGs movement are achieved through the Lagrangian formulation-based discrete-phase model (DPM). The observed pollen grains distribution pattern is highly spatially dependent on heterogeneous urban obstacles as it induces modified characteristics of the wind flow field. Wind-urban structure interplays in PGs concentration variation. The simulated results identify the pollen hot-spot zones, where vortical flow features and low wind speed dominate. It is well-established that cities need nature for critical ecosystem services--from storing carbon, to reducing temperatures, to mitigating stormwater--and there is growing momentum to seek out strategies for how these services can intersect with urban design and planning efforts. Social scientists and conservation planners increasingly point to urban residents' need to breathe fresh air, encounter the natural world, and have room to play. It is less obvious, perhaps, whether nature needs cities in order to thrive. The evidence from both urban planning and conservation planning is increasingly "yes." As changes in land use and land cover sweep the planet, cities are becoming important refugia for certain wildlife populations. In recent years, urban planning has embraced the concept of "green infrastructure" as a way to embed green space across metropolitan landscapes to draw on the inherent benefits nature provides to cities, as well as to create habitat for wildlife. We explore this evolving view of cities and nature in the fields of urban and conservation planning. We argue the time is ripe to bring these worlds together, and, using our empirical work, establish that cities matter for monarch butterflies, other pollinators, and at-risk wildlife species. Metropolitan areas play an undetermined role in supporting migratory monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) populations despite providing habitat areas rich with milkweed (Asclepias spp.), the obligate host plants for monarch larvae. Researchers from the US Geological Survey and collaborating institutions have called for an "all hands on deck" approach to establishing monarch butterfly habitat by focusing on potential contributions from all land use sectors at levels necessary to sustain the eastern migratory monarch butterfly population. To understand the current and potential contribution of milkweed stems in metropolitan areas, our research teams surveyed milkweed densities using a new "metro-transect" protocol and conducted interviews and surveys across a diverse set of stakeholder groups in four major metropolitan areas (Chicago, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Kansas City, and Austin). We developed Geographic Information System (GIS) tools that use these data to model existing milkweed stems in metropolitan areas, and to estimate the potential to add additional milkweed stems with the adoption of milkweed-friendly planting practices across different land use classes (e.g., residential, institutional, and commercial). By extrapolating metropolitan Chicago milkweed densities across US Census urbanized areas in the northern US range of the eastern monarch butterflies, we estimate that approximately 29.8 million stems of milkweed can be added under modest "enhanced" milkweed densities, and up to 271 million stems may be added under "exemplary" milkweed densities. Both estimates are derived from a two percent "adoption rate," or landowner conversion of green spaces. These findings show that metropolitan areas provide important habitat opportunities and should be included prominently in monarch conservation strategies when working toward national goals to increase the amount of milkweed stems and monarch habitat across the Midwest. Municipal decision-makers and planners can estimate their capacity to add stems across the metropolitan landscape by identifying where the biggest opportunities exist with help from our Urban Monarch Conservation Planning Tools. Climate change is impacting urban areas, especially through extreme rainfall that stresses conventional water management systems. Rainwater resulting from impervious runoffs, stormwater leads to an increase in the amount of wastewater that requires treatment and an overflow of the combined sewer system. Therefore, untreated wastewater is released into the surroundings or, in some cases, causes damage to urban systems. Nevertheless, many cities in the world are in the process of establishing a sustainable approach to urban water management. Sustainable stormwater management practices are essential for overcoming various environmental challenges and promoting community sustainability and resilience. The purpose of this paper is to communicate Oslo's success in implementing sustainable stormwater management in urban areas. By analyzing successful cases, researchers may be able to record patterns that offer potential answers to the stormwater management challenge. The present case study presents an approach that can enlighten urban planners and policymakers about the potential outcomes of sustainable stormwater management under the conditions presented. Urban rivers face sustained anthropogenic pressures limiting biodiversity. Yet, urban waterways such as the Detroit River are important habitat in supporting regional diversity. The Detroit River is a Great Lakes Area of Concern where conservation and restoration efforts prioritize improved biological and habitat integrity in the connecting channel. This study explores benthic macroinvertebrate in submerged aquatic vegetation across five mainstem channel wetlands and two tributary sites of the Canadian wetlands to describe spatial patterns and diversity. We first examine inter-wetland differences between five mainstem wetlands by hierarchical cluster analysis, NMDS and PERMANOVA, identifying two mainstem groups: one comprising of two middle reach wetlands (Detroit River Marshes and Grass Island), the second showed similarities among wetlands across all reaches (Turkey Creek, River Canard and Peche Island). The latter groupings shared similar habitat characteristics, deeper and finer grain-sizes, and functional feeding group characteristics - low abundances of shredders. Second objective, we perform an intra-wetland comparison for Turkey Creek and River Canard to analyze for differences along tributaries. At neither River Canard nor Turkey Creek we observed significant tributary influence on mainstem communities but had found the Turkey Creek tributary communities significantly differed from the channel communities. Diversity metrics and Hilsenhoff Biotic Index illustrate strained benthic communities across the river. We had also found water quality to be consistently moderately degraded. Our findings differ from prior analyses within emergent vegetation that indicate variable water quality conditions between mainstem and tributary and non-impaired macroinvertebrate communities. Introduction: The transition towards electrolysis-produced hydrogen in refineries and chemical industries is expected to have a potent impact on the local energy system of which these industries are part. In this study, three urban areas with hydrogen-intense industries are studied regarding how the energy system configuration is affected if the expected future hydrogen demand is met in each node individually, as compared to forming a "Hydrogen Valley," in which a pipeline can be used to trade hydrogen between the nodes. Method: A technoeconomic, mixed-integer, linear optimization model is used to study the investments in and dispatch of the included technologies with an hourly time resolution, while minimizing the total system cost. Four cases are investigated based on the availability of offshore wind power and the possibility to invest in a pipeline. Results: The results show that investments in a pipeline reduces by 4%-7% the total system cost of meeting the demands for electricity, heating, and hydrogen in the cases investigated. AbstractThe current evidence base for outdoor and nature-based education in a context of education for sustainability is limited and unrepresentative of the realities of small, urban schools, which tend to be characterised by small outdoor spaces devoid of nature. To address this research gap, we carried out two studies in Malta, as an example of a densely populated and heavily urbanised context. A survey conducted among educators in Maltese primary schools explored the occurence and frequency of outdoor teaching and factors that influence attitudes, perceptions, and practice of outdoor teaching. A complementary study mapped built, hard and soft landscapes of all primary school footprints in Malta. The two studies converge to shed light on possible systemic or physical factors leading to a low incidence of outdoor teaching and in particular, of nature-based teaching in small, urban schools. Nonetheless, our findings show strong interest in such teaching approaches amongst study participants. Linear barriers pose significant challenges for wildlife gene flow, impacting species persistence, adaptation, and evolution. While numerous studies have examined the effects of linear barriers (e.g., fences and roadways) on partitioning urban and non‐urban areas, understanding their influence on gene flow within cities remains limited. Here, we investigated the impact of linear barriers on coyote (Canis latrans) population structure in Seattle, Washington, where major barriers (i.e., interstate highways and bodies of water) divide the city into distinct quadrants. Just under 1000 scats were collected to obtain genetic data between January 2021 and December 2022, allowing us to identify 73 individual coyotes. Notably, private allele analysis underscored limited interbreeding among quadrants. When comparing one quadrant to each other, there were up to 16 private alleles within a single quadrant, representing nearly 22% of the population allelic diversity. Our analysis revealed weak isolation by distance, and despite being a highly mobile species, genetic structuring was apparent between quadrants even with extremely short geographic distance between individual coyotes, implying that Interstate 5 and the Ship Canal act as major barriers. This study uses coyotes as a model species for understanding urban gene flow and its consequences in cities, a crucial component for bolstering conservation of rarer species and developing wildlife friendly cities. The ways in which people living with dementia (PLWD) care and are cared for in urban and suburban environments is not fully understood. Specifically, there is limited research on the impact neighborhoods have on the intersectional experiences of well-being for PLWD and their formal and informal caregivers—particularly for immigrants, women, and those living in under-resourced suburban areas. Writing from the geographical context of the inner suburb of Scarborough in Toronto, Canada, we present a framework for understanding the everyday complexities of care practices in this triad of individuals—PLWDs, care partners, and care workers—that considers their diverse practices, contexts, identities, and relations through time. Documenting these networks of caring complexities, represented in social and spatial ways, can disrupt the ways in which neoliberalism has relegated the understanding of care to be a highly gendered and racialized problem, as well as an individual problem to be solved by the free market, and to be contained in the home between family members (not in the public community realm). Objective. Diet-related disease is rising, disproportionately affecting minority communities in which small food retail stores swamp supermarkets. Barriers to healthy food access were exacerbated by the pandemic. We examined the following: (1) individual- and household-level factors in a sample of Baltimore community members who regularly shop at corner stores and (2) how these factors are associated with indicators of dietary quality. Design. Cross-sectional data were collected using an online survey to capture sociodemographics, anthropometrics, and food sourcing, spending, and consumption patterns. Concurrent quantitative and qualitative analyses were conducted in Stata 18 and ATLAS.ti. Setting. This study was set in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Participants. The participants included adults (n = 127) living or working in Baltimore who identified as regular customers of their neighborhood corner store. Results. The respondents were majority Black and low-income, with a high prevalence of food insecurity (62.2%) and overweight/obesity (66.9%). Most (82.76%) shopped in their neighborhood corner store weekly. One-third (33.4%) of beverage calories were attributed to sugar-sweetened beverages, and few met the recommended servings for fruits and vegetables or fiber (27.2% and 10.4%, respectively). Being Black and not owning a home were associated with lower beverage and fiber intake, and not owning a home was also associated with lower fruit and vegetable intake. Food insecurity was associated with higher beverage intake, while WIC enrollment was associated with higher fruit and vegetable and fiber intakes. Open-ended responses contextualized post-pandemic food sourcing and consumption in this setting. Conclusions. This paper helps characterize the consumers of a complex urban food system. Using an evaluative lens, it discerns how contemporary architectural trends have influenced the city's historical buildings, urban planning, and local environment. Through a descriptive and interpretive methodology, the study unveils the intricacies of Erbil's architectural transition, drawing insights from diverse sources such as maps, visuals, and legislative texts. This paper makes a significant contribution to the ongoing dialogue about the evolution of contemporary architecture in Erbil, illustrating vividly how modern architecture, characterized by its departure from tradition, gradually replaced conventional building practices from the early 20th century until the 1980s, leaving a lasting imprint on Erbil's traditional organizational planning identity. Background: According to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2015, approximately 600 million individuals, equating to nearly one-tenth of the global population, become sick due to consuming contaminated food each year. Furthermore, the report indicates that 420,000 individuals perish annually as a result, leading to the loss of 33 million healthy life years (DALYs). Among these cases, 40% of the burden of foodborne diseases affects children under the age of five, resulting in 125,000 deaths annually. Objectives: To distinguish the attitudes towards food safety practices in urban and rural households based on the WHO Five Keys. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Urban and rural households located in the field practice areas of Jawaharlal Nehru medical college in Belagavi Taluka, and District of Karnataka State. The study took place from January 1, 2017, to December 31, 2017. Results: In urban participants, 30.0% were aged 25 to 35 years whereas for rural participants, 35.8% were aged 18 to 25 years. The mean age for urban participants was 37.96 ± 14.9 years, and for rural participants, it was 33.48 ± 13.5 years. The difference in mean ages between urban and rural participants was statistically significant (χ2 = 39.53, p < 0.001). According to Modified B. G. Prasad's Classification of socio-economic status of urban participants, 34.3% of study participants belonged to Class IV whereas in rural participants, 41.3% in Class IV, differences in socio-economic status between urban and rural participants were statistically significant (χ2 = 59.61, p < 0.001). Conclusion: The study underscores the importance of recognizing and addressing the distinctive demographic characteristics between urban and rural populations, which can have implications for healthcare, education, and socioeconomic interventions tailored to the specific needs of each community. How can attention to spatial dynamics improve our understanding of where, how, and why conflict-related violence (CRV) concentrates within postwar cities such as Mitrovica? Like many other postwar cities, Mitrovica – one of Kosovo's largest cities – remains affected by violence connected to the preceding war. This violence is not equally distributed across the city but rather concentrates to certain flashpoints while other sites are comparatively calm(er). To date, however, research on postwar cities has not fully explained such patterns, partly due to limitations in microlevel data. In this article we rely on novel georeferenced data on CRV, in combination with in-depth fieldwork, to map CRV in Mitrovica and explore the causes for its spatial clustering. Using this approach, we show that CRV concentrates at Mitrovica's Main Bridge and explore this concentration using relational space as an analytical lens. The analysis contributes new insights into patterns of violence in Mitrovica, demonstrates the value of combining systematic data on the patterns of CRV with in-depth exploration into its underlying dynamics, and contributes to existing research on Mitrovica as well as on postwar cities and postwar violence more broadly.
