Despite advances in deep learning for estimating brain age from structural MRI data, incorporating functional MRI data is challenging due to its complex structure and the noisy nature of functional connectivity measurements. To address this, we present the Multitask Adversarial Variational Autoencoder, a custom deep learning framework designed to improve brain age predictions through multimodal MRI data integration. This model separates latent variables into generic and unique codes, isolating shared and modality-specific features. By integrating multitask learning with sex classification as an additional task, the model captures sex-specific aging patterns. Evaluated on the OpenBHB dataset, a large multisite brain MRI collection, the model achieves a mean absolute error of 2.77 years, outperforming traditional methods. This success positions M-AVAE as a powerful tool for metaverse-based healthcare applications in brain age estimation.

The realization of fault-tolerant quantum computers hinges on effective quantum error correction protocols, whose performance significantly relies on the nature of the underlying noise. In this work, we directly study the structure of non-Markovian correlated errors and their impact on surface code memory performance. Specifically, we compare surface code performance under non-Markovian noise and independent circuit-level noise, while keeping marginal error rates constant. Our analysis shows that while not all temporally correlated structures are detrimental, certain structures, particularly multi-time "streaky" correlations affecting syndrome qubits and two-qubit gates, can severely degrade logical error rate scaling. Furthermore, we discuss our results in the context of recent quantum error correction experiments on physical devices. This paper pioneers the use of quantum machine learning (QML) for modeling the Ohmic contact process in GaN high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs) for the first time. Utilizing data from 159 devices and variational auto-encoder-based augmentation, we developed a quantum kernel-based regressor (QKR) with a 2-level ZZ-feature map. Benchmarking against six classical machine learning (CML) models, our QKR consistently demonstrated the lowest mean absolute error (MAE), mean squared error (MSE), and root mean squared error (RMSE). Repeated statistical analysis confirmed its robustness. The no-reference image quality assessment is a challenging domain that addresses estimating image quality without the original reference. We introduce an improved mechanism to extract local and non-local information from images via different transformer encoders and CNNs. The utilization of Transformer encoders aims to mitigate locality bias and generate a non-local representation by sequentially processing CNN features, which inherently capture local visual structures. Establishing a stronger connection between subjective and objective assessments is achieved through sorting within batches of images based on relative distance information. A self-consistency approach to self-supervision is presented, explicitly addressing the degradation of no-reference image quality assessment (NR-IQA) models under equivariant transformations. Our approach ensures model robustness by maintaining consistency between an image and its horizontally flipped equivalent. Through empirical evaluation of five popular image quality assessment datasets, the proposed model outperforms alternative algorithms in the context of no-reference image quality assessment datasets, especially on smaller datasets. The rapid growth of Internet of Things (IoT) devices necessitates efficient data compression techniques to handle the vast amounts of data generated by these devices. In this context, chemiresistive sensor arrays (CSAs), a simple-to-fabricate but crucial component in IoT systems, generate large volumes of data due to their simultaneous multi-sensor operations. Classical principal component analysis (cPCA) methods, a common solution to the data compression challenge, face limitations in preserving critical information during dimensionality reduction. In this study, we present quantum principal component analysis (qPCA) as a superior alternative to enhance information retention. Our findings demonstrate that qPCA outperforms cPCA in various back-end machine-learning modeling tasks, particularly in low-dimensional scenarios when limited Quantum bits (qubits) can be accessed. These results underscore the potential of noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) computers, despite current qubit limitations, to revolutionize data processing in real-world IoT applications, particularly in enhancing the efficiency and reliability of CSA data compression and readout.

HodgeRank generalizes ranking algorithms, e.g. Google PageRank, to rank alternatives based on real-world (often incomplete) data using graphs and discrete exterior calculus. It analyzes multipartite interactions on high-dimensional networks with a complexity that scales exponentially with dimension. We develop a quantum algorithm that approximates the HodgeRank solution with complexity independent of dimension. Our algorithm extracts relevant information from the state such as the ranking consistency, which achieves a superpolynomial speedup over similar classical methods.

Scalar fields which are favorite among the possible candidates for the dark energy usually have degenerate minima at $\pm \phi_{min}$. Quantum computing has the potential to solve complex problems beyond the capabilities of classical computers. However, its practical use is currently limited due to early-stage quantum software engineering and the constraints of Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) devices. To address this issue, this chapter introduces the concept of serverless quantum computing with examples using QFaaS, a practical Quantum Function-as-a-Service framework. This framework utilizes the serverless computing model to simplify quantum application development and deployment by abstracting the complexities of quantum hardware and enhancing application portability across different quantum software development kits and quantum backends. The chapter provides comprehensive documentation and guidelines for deploying and using QFaaS, detailing the setup, component deployment, and examples of service-oriented quantum applications. The quantum cloud computing paradigm presents unique challenges in task placement due to the dynamic and heterogeneous nature of quantum computation resources. Traditional heuristic approaches fall short in adapting to the rapidly evolving landscape of quantum computing. This paper proposes DRLQ, a novel Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL)-based technique for task placement in quantum cloud computing environments, addressing the optimization of task completion time and quantum task scheduling efficiency. It leverages the Deep Q Network (DQN) architecture, enhanced with the Rainbow DQN approach, to create a dynamic task placement strategy. This approach is one of the first in the field of quantum cloud resource management, enabling adaptive learning and decision-making for quantum cloud environments and effectively optimizing task placement based on changing conditions and resource availability. We conduct extensive experiments using the QSimPy simulation toolkit to evaluate the performance of our method, demonstrating substantial improvements in task execution efficiency and a reduction in the need to reschedule quantum tasks. Integration of quantum computing in generative machine learning models has the potential to offer benefits such as training speed-up and superior feature extraction. However, the existing quantum generative adversarial networks (QGANs) fail to generate high-quality images due to their patch-based, pixel-wise learning approaches. These methods capture only local details, ignoring the global structure and semantic information of images. In this work, we address these challenges by proposing a quantum image generative learning (QIGL) approach for high-quality medical image generation. Our proposed quantum generator leverages variational quantum circuit approach addressing scalability issues by extracting principal components from the images instead of dividing them into patches. Additionally, we integrate the Wasserstein distance within the QIGL framework to generate a diverse set of medical samples. Through a systematic set of simulations on X-ray images from knee osteoarthritis and medical MNIST datasets, our model demonstrates superior performance, achieving the lowest Fr\'echet Inception Distance (FID) scores compared to its classical counterpart and advanced QGAN models reported in the literature.

A scalable and programmable quantum computer holds the potential to solve computationally intensive tasks that classical computers cannot accomplish within a reasonable time frame, achieving quantum advantage. However, the vulnerability of the current generation of quantum processors to errors poses a significant challenge towards executing complex and deep quantum circuits required for practical problems. Quantum error correction codes such as Stabilizer codes offer a promising path forward for fault-tolerant quantum computing, however their realisation on quantum hardware is an on-going area of research. In particular, fault-tolerant quantum processing must employ logical gates on logical qubits with error suppression with realistically large size codes. This work has implemented a transversal CNOT gate between two logical qubits constructed using the Repetition code with flag qubits, and demonstrated error suppression with increasing code size under multiple rounds of error detection. By performing experiments on IBM quantum devices through cloud access, our results show that despite the potential for error propagation among logical qubits during the transversal CNOT gate operation, increasing the number of physical qubits from 21 to 39 and 57 can suppress errors, which persists over 10 rounds of error detection. Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated remarkable capabilities, revolutionizing the integration of AI in daily life applications. However, they are prone to hallucinations, generating claims that contradict established facts, deviating from prompts, and producing inconsistent responses when the same prompt is presented multiple times. Addressing these issues is challenging due to the lack of comprehensive and easily assessable benchmark datasets. Most existing datasets are small and rely on multiple-choice questions, which are inadequate for evaluating the generative prowess of LLMs. To measure hallucination in LLMs, this paper introduces a comprehensive benchmark dataset comprising over 75,000 prompts across eight domains. These prompts are designed to elicit definitive, concise, and informative answers. The dataset is divided into two segments: one publicly available for testing and assessing LLM performance and a hidden segment for benchmarking various LLMs. In our experiments, we tested six LLMs-GPT-3.5, LLama 2, LLama 3, Gemini, Mixtral, and Zephyr-revealing that overall factual hallucination ranges from 59% to 82% on the public dataset and 57% to 76% in the hidden benchmark. Prompt misalignment hallucination ranges from 6% to 95% in the public dataset and 17% to 94% in the hidden counterpart. Average consistency ranges from 21% to 61% and 22% to 63%, respectively. Domain-wise analysis shows that LLM performance significantly deteriorates when asked for specific numeric information while performing moderately with person, location, and date queries. Our dataset demonstrates its efficacy and serves as a comprehensive benchmark for LLM performance evaluation. Jet tagging is an essential categorization problem in high energy physics. In recent times, Deep Learning has not only risen to the challenge of jet tagging but also significantly improved its performance. In this article, we proposed an idea of a new architecture, Particle Multi-Axis transformer (ParMAT) which is a modified version of Particle transformer (ParT). ParMAT contains local and global spatial interactions within a single unit which improves its ability to handle various input lengths. We trained our model on JETCLASS, a publicly available large dataset that contains 100M jets of 10 different classes of particles. By integrating a parallel attention mechanism and pairwise interactions of particles in the attention mechanism, ParMAT achieves robustness and higher accuracy over the ParT and ParticleNet. The scalability of the model to huge datasets and its ability to automatically extract essential features demonstrate its potential for enhancing jet tagging.

This paper proposes a composite inner-product computation unit based on left-to-right (LR) arithmetic for the acceleration of convolution neural networks (CNN) on hardware. The efficacy of the proposed L2R-CIPU method has been shown on the VGG-16 network, and assessment is done on various performance metrics. The L2R-CIPU design achieves 1.06x to 6.22x greater performance, 4.8x to 15x more TOPS/W, and 4.51x to 53.45x higher TOPS/mm2 than prior architectures.

Despite their ever more widespread deployment throughout society, machine learning algorithms remain critically vulnerable to being spoofed by subtle adversarial tampering with their input data. The prospect of near-term quantum computers being capable of running {quantum machine learning} (QML) algorithms has therefore generated intense interest in their adversarial vulnerability. Here we show that quantum properties of QML algorithms can confer fundamental protections against such attacks, in certain scenarios guaranteeing robustness against classically-armed adversaries. We leverage tools from many-body physics to identify the quantum sources of this protection. Our results offer a theoretical underpinning of recent evidence which suggest quantum advantages in the search for adversarial robustness. In particular, we prove that quantum classifiers are: (i) protected against weak perturbations of data drawn from the trained distribution, (ii) protected against local attacks if they are insufficiently scrambling, and (iii) protected against universal adversarial attacks if they are sufficiently quantum chaotic. Our analytic results are supported by numerical evidence demonstrating the applicability of our theorems and the resulting robustness of a quantum classifier in practice. Quantum chemistry is a promising application in the era of quantum computing since the unique effects of quantum mechanics that take exponential growing resources to simulate classically are controllable on quantum computers. Fermionic degrees of freedom can be encoded efficiently onto qubits and allow for algorithms such as the Quantum Equation-of-Motion method to find the entire energy spectrum of a quantum system. In this paper, we propose the Reduced Quantum Equation-of-Motion method by reducing the dimensionality of its generalized eigenvalue equation, which results in half the measurements required compared to the Quantum Equation-of-Motion method, leading to speed up the algorithm and less noise accumulation on real devices. In particular, we analyse the performance of our method on two noise models and calculate the excitation energies of a bulk Silicon and Gallium Arsenide using our method on an IBM quantum processor. Our method is fully robust to the uniform depolarizing error and we demonstrate that the selection of suitable atomic orbital complexity could increase the robustness of our algorithm under real noise. We also find that taking the average of multiple experiments tends towards the correct energies due to the fluctuations around the exact values. Such noise resilience of our approach could be used on current quantum devices to solve quantum chemistry problems.

In recent years, street view imagery has grown to become one of the most important sources of geospatial data collection and urban analytics, which facilitates generating meaningful insights and assisting in decision-making. Synthesizing a street-view image from its corresponding satellite image is a challenging task due to the significant differences in appearance and viewpoint between the two domains. In this study, we screened 20 recent research papers to provide a thorough review of the state-of-the-art of how street-view images are synthesized from their corresponding satellite counterparts. The main findings are: (i) novel deep learning techniques are required for synthesizing more realistic and accurate street-view images; (ii) more datasets need to be collected for public usage; and (iii) more specific evaluation metrics need to be investigated for evaluating the generated images appropriately. We conclude that, due to applying outdated deep learning techniques, the recent literature failed to generate detailed and diverse street-view images.

Quantum cloud computing is an emerging computing paradigm that allows seamless access to quantum hardware as cloud-based services. However, effective use of quantum resources is challenging and necessitates robust simulation frameworks for effective resource management design and evaluation. To address this need, we proposed QSimPy, a novel discrete-event simulation framework designed with the main focus of facilitating learning-centric approaches for quantum resource management problems in cloud environments. Underpinned by extensibility, compatibility, and reusability principles, QSimPy provides a lightweight simulation environment based on SimPy, a well-known Python-based simulation engine for modeling dynamics of quantum cloud resources and task operations. We integrate the Gymnasium environment into our framework to support the creation of simulated environments for developing and evaluating reinforcement learning-based techniques for optimizing quantum cloud resource management. The QSimPy framework encapsulates the operational intricacies of quantum cloud environments, supporting research in dynamic task allocation and optimization through DRL approaches. We also demonstrate the use of QSimPy in developing reinforcement learning policies for quantum task placement problems, demonstrating its potential as a useful framework for future quantum cloud research.

Human decision-making often relies on visual information from multiple perspectives or views. In contrast, machine learning-based object recognition utilizes information from a single image of the object. However, the information conveyed by a single image may not be sufficient for accurate decision-making, particularly in complex recognition problems. The utilization of multi-view 3D representations for object recognition has thus far demonstrated the most promising results for achieving state-of-the-art performance. This review paper comprehensively covers recent progress in multi-view 3D object recognition methods for 3D classification and retrieval tasks. Specifically, we focus on deep learning-based and transformer-based techniques, as they are widely utilized and have achieved state-of-the-art performance. We provide detailed information about existing deep learning-based and transformer-based multi-view 3D object recognition models, including the most commonly used 3D datasets, camera configurations and number of views, view selection strategies, pre-trained CNN architectures, fusion strategies, and recognition performance on 3D classification and 3D retrieval tasks. Additionally, we examine various computer vision applications that use multi-view classification. Finally, we highlight key findings and future directions for developing multi-view 3D object recognition methods to provide readers with a comprehensive understanding of the field.

Quantum cloud computing is an emerging paradigm of computing that empowers quantum applications and their deployment on quantum computing resources without the need for a specialized environment to host and operate physical quantum computers. This paper reviews recent advances, identifies open problems, and proposes future directions in quantum cloud computing. It discusses the state-of-the-art quantum cloud advances, including the various cloud-based models, platforms, and recently developed technologies and software use cases. Furthermore, it discusses different aspects of the quantum cloud, including resource management, quantum serverless, security, and privacy problems. Finally, the paper examines open problems and proposes the future directions of quantum cloud computing, including potential opportunities and ongoing research in this emerging field.

The rapid advancement of Internet of Things (IoT) necessitates the development of optimized nanoparticle-based Chemiresistive Sensor (CRS) arrays that are energy-efficient, specific, and sensitive. This study introduces an optimization strategy that employs a rapid ensemble learning-based model committee approach to achieve these goals. Utilizing machine learning models such as Elastic Net Regression, Random Forests, and XGBoost, among others, the strategy identifies the most impactful sensors in a CRS array for accurate classification. A weighted voting mechanism is introduced to aggregate the models' opinions in sensor selection, thereby setting up two distinct working modes, termed "Blue" and "Green". The Blue mode operates with all sensors for maximum detection capability, while the Green mode selectively activates only key sensors, significantly reducing energy consumption without compromising detection accuracy. The strategy is validated through theoretical calculations and Monte Carlo simulations, demonstrating its effectiveness and accuracy. Virtual distillation (VD) using measurements of multiple copies of a quantum circuit have recently been proposed as a method of noise mitigation of expectation values. Circuit decompositions known as B gates were found only for single qubit expectation values however practical calculations require multi-qubit expectation values which cannot be corrected with B gates. We discover low depth circuit decompositions for multi-qubit expectation values by combining multiple projections to recover the correct measurement statistics or expectation values. Our method adds linear entangling gates with number of qubits, but requires extra measurements. Furthermore, in applications to find ground states such as the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) algorithm, the variational principle is required which states the energy cannot go below the ground state energy. We discover that the variational principle is violated if noise is higher on single expectation values than multi-qubit which renders VQE useless. We show this occurs when using B gates and is preserved if using our low depth decomposition on all expectation values. We perform demonstration on real devices and demonstrate our decomposition can mitigate real experimental noise in VQE for the H$_2$ molecule with a two qubit tapered mapping, H$_3$ with three qubits, and H$_2$ with four qubits. Our decomposition provides a way to perform duplicate circuit virtual distillation on real devices at significantly lower depth and for arbitrary observables.

Quantum computing has the potential to provide solutions to problems that are intractable on classical computers, but the accuracy of the current generation of quantum computers suffer from the impact of noise or errors such as leakage, crosstalk, dephasing, and amplitude damping among others. As the access to quantum computers is almost exclusively in a shared environment through cloud-based services, it is possible that an adversary can exploit crosstalk noise to disrupt quantum computations on nearby qubits, even carefully designing quantum circuits to purposely lead to wrong answers. In this paper, we analyze the extent and characteristics of crosstalk noise through tomography conducted on IBM Quantum computers, leading to an enhanced crosstalk simulation model. Our results indicate that crosstalk noise is a significant source of errors on IBM quantum hardware, making crosstalk based attack a viable threat to quantum computing in a shared environment. Based on our crosstalk simulator benchmarked against IBM hardware, we assess the impact of crosstalk attacks and develop strategies for mitigating crosstalk effects. Through a systematic set of simulations, we assess the effectiveness of three crosstalk attack mitigation strategies, namely circuit separation, qubit allocation optimization via reinforcement learning, and the use of spectator qubits, and show that they all overcome crosstalk attacks with varying degrees of success and help to secure quantum computing in a shared platform., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

The application of quantum machine learning to large-scale high-resolution image datasets is not yet possible due to the limited number of qubits and relatively high level of noise in the current generation of quantum devices. In this work, we address this challenge by proposing a quantum transfer learning (QTL) architecture that integrates quantum variational circuits with a classical machine learning network pre-trained on ImageNet dataset. Through a systematic set of simulations over a variety of image datasets such as Ants & Bees, CIFAR-10, and Road Sign Detection, we demonstrate the superior performance of our QTL approach over classical and quantum machine learning without involving transfer learning. Furthermore, we evaluate the adversarial robustness of QTL architecture with and without adversarial training, confirming that our QTL method is adversarially robust against data manipulation attacks and outperforms classical methods.

Radio signal classification plays a pivotal role in identifying the modulation scheme used in received radio signals, which is essential for demodulation and proper interpretation of the transmitted information. Researchers have underscored the high susceptibility of ML algorithms for radio signal classification to adversarial attacks. Such vulnerability could result in severe consequences, including misinterpretation of critical messages, interception of classified information, or disruption of communication channels. Recent advancements in quantum computing have revolutionized theories and implementations of computation, bringing the unprecedented development of Quantum Machine Learning (QML). It is shown that quantum variational classifiers (QVCs) provide notably enhanced robustness against classical adversarial attacks in image classification. However, no research has yet explored whether QML can similarly mitigate adversarial threats in the context of radio signal classification. This work applies QVCs to radio signal classification and studies their robustness to various adversarial attacks. We also propose the novel application of the approximate amplitude encoding (AAE) technique to encode radio signal data efficiently. Our extensive simulation results present that attacks generated on QVCs transfer well to CNN models, indicating that these adversarial examples can fool neural networks that they are not explicitly designed to attack. However, the converse is not true. QVCs primarily resist the attacks generated on CNNs. Predicting and analyzing global behaviour of complex systems is challenging due to the intricate nature of their component interactions. Recent work has started modelling complex systems using networks endowed with multiway interactions among nodes, known as higher-order networks. Simplicial complexes are a class of higher-order networks that have received significant attention due to their topological structure and connections to Hodge theory. Topological signal processing (TSP) utilizes these connections to analyze and manipulate signals defined on non-Euclidean domains such as simplicial complexes. In this work, we present a general quantum algorithm for implementing filtering processes in TSP and describe its application to extracting network data based on the Hodge decomposition. We leverage pre-existing tools introduced in recent quantum algorithms for topological data analysis and combine them with spectral filtering techniques using the quantum singular value transformation framework. While this paper serves as a proof-of-concept, we obtain a super-polynomial improvement over the best known classical algorithms for TSP filtering processes, modulo some important caveats about encoding and retrieving the data from a quantum state. The proposed algorithm generalizes the applicability of tools from quantum topological data analysis to novel applications in analyzing high-dimensional complex systems.

Recent work has proposed solving the k-means clustering problem on quantum computers via the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA) and coreset techniques. Although the current method demonstrates the possibility of quantum k-means clustering, it does not ensure high accuracy and consistency across a wide range of datasets. The existing coreset techniques are designed for classical algorithms and there has been no quantum-tailored coreset technique which is designed to boost the accuracy of quantum algorithms. In this work, we propose solving the k-means clustering problem with the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) and a customised coreset method, the Contour coreset, which has been formulated with specific focus on quantum algorithms. Extensive simulations with synthetic and real-life data demonstrated that our VQE+Contour Coreset approach outperforms existing QAOA+Coreset k-means clustering approaches with higher accuracy and lower standard deviation. Our work has shown that quantum tailored coreset techniques has the potential to significantly boost the performance of quantum algorithms when compared to using generic off-the-shelf coreset techniques., Comment: 33 pages
