Abstract

In the frame of a systematic study of charged particle production routes of medically relevant radionuclei, the excitation function for indirect production of $^{178m}$Ta through $^{nat}$Hf($\alpha$,xn)$^{178}$W-$^{178m}$Ta nuclear reaction was measured for the first time up to 40 MeV. In parallel, the side reactions $^{nat}$Hf($\alpha$,x)$^{179,177,176,175}$W, $^{183,182,178g,177,176,175}$Ta, $^{179m,177m,175}$Hf were also assessed. Stacked foil irradiation technique and $\gamma$-ray spectrometry were used. New experimental cross section data for the $^{nat}$Ta(d,xn)$^{178}$W reaction are also reported up to 40 MeV. The measured excitation functions are compared with the results of the ALICE-IPPE, and EMPIRE nuclear reaction model codes and with the TALYS 1.4 based data in the TENDL-2013 library. The thick target yields were deduced and compared with yields of other charged particle ((p,4n), (d,5n) and ($^3$He,x)) production routes for $^{178}$W.

Abstract

Excitation functions for the production of the 181,182m,182g,183,184g,186Re and 183,184Ta radionuclides from proton bombardment on natural tungsten were measured using the stacked-foil activation technique for the proton energies up to 40 MeV. A new data set has been given for the formation of the investigated radionuclides. Results are in good agreement with the earlier reported experimental data and theoretical calculations based on the ALICE-IPPE code. The thick target integral yields were also deduced from the measured excitation functions. The deduced yield values were compared with the directly measured thick target yield (TTY), and found acceptable agreement. The investigated radionuclide 186Re has remarkable applications in the field of nuclear medicine, whereas the data of 183,184gRe and 183Ta have potential applications in thin layer activation analysis and biomedical tracer studies, respectively., Comment: 21papes, 14 figures

Abstract

Diversified plant species in homestead areas play an important role to ensure the food and nutritional security of rural communities. An exploratory survey and field observation was carried out at Sadar upazila of Rangamati district in Bangladesh to identify the existing plant biodiversity in the homestead areas of six unions along with municipal area of Rangamati Sadar upazila. A total of 120 households were randomly selected for collecting data using face-to-face interviews from July to September 2020. A total of 163 plant species were identified at different homesteads of the study area. Among different categories of plant species, 13 (7.98%) timber, 32 (19.63%) fruits, 19 (11.66%) medicinal species, 31 (19.02%) different vegetable species, 56 (34.36%) different flowering and ornamental species, 08 (4.91%) spices and condiments and 04 (2.45%) other plant species were recorded. The front yard was dominated by most of the plant species whereas the kitchen side was dominated by vegetables. The highest diversity was found in vegetables (H'= 0.96) followed by medicinal plant and fruit species (H'= 0.83), timber, and flower and ornamental species (H'= 0.82). A moderate diversity was found at the back side (H'=0.69) followed by the boundary side (H'=0.68), front yard (H'=0.65) and, approach road (H'=0.60). The study concludes that homestead agroforestry is a unique area for maintaining both plant diversity and productivity which could be a good option to meet up the demand of food and nutrition of the people in hilly areas. Abstract

Background: Lumbar intervertebral disc herniation is a common health problem in our country. Majority of the surgeries of the spine are done due to disc herniation in Bangladesh. Discectomy can be limited to partial discectomy where only extruded and sequestrated portion is removed, subtotal discectomy where the whole of nucleus pulpous is removed and total discectomy where the entire intervertebral disc of the affected level is removed. Aim of the study: To find out the effectiveness and functional outcome of fenestration and discectomy by mini-incision for the prolapsed lumbar intervertebral disc in our context. Material & Methods: This prospective observational study was conducted at National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR), Dhaka, Bangladesh during July 2015 to June 2017. A total of 31 patients with prolapsed lumbar intervertebral disc were included for the study according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: The mean age was 35.98 ± 8.50 years with the range from 17 to 50 years. In this study, the most common muscle weakness in EHL. Out of 31 patients, 22 (70.96 %) patients were in this group. 08 (25.80%) cases had weakness in FHL and another group 01 (3.22%) had both muscle weakness. Out of 31 patients, 30 (96.78%) patients had preoperative sensory deficit and 03 (09.67%) patients had postoperative sensory deficit, which is statistically significant. In preoperative period, moderate pain in 27 (83.87%) patients, severe pain in 04 (12.90%) patients. In postoperative period had no pain in 22 (70.96%) patients, mild pain was noted in 08 (25.08%) patients, moderate pain in 01 (03.22%) patient. 20 (64.51%) patients had para spinal muscle spasm in the preoperative period, whereas no patient had any spasm in 3 months postoperatively. Abstract

Homestead agroforestry is crucial for food, fiber, and other necessities which are required outside the conventional forests. Thus, homestead agroforestry meets the criteria for a sustainable forest management scheme, providing a better way for biodiversity conservation. Moringa based homestead agroforestry in Sylhet has an opportunity to encourage species diversity for its various structural properties. This paper explores the plant species diversity of Moringa based homestead area at Jaintiapur upazila in Sylhet. Personal interviews were conducted from June 2022 to September 2022 with 40 randomly selected respondents who were involved in Moringa-based homestead agroforestry. Shannon-Wiener Diversity Indices (SWDI) was used to explore the plant species diversity index. In the study area identified plant species were 50.0% fruits, 26.3% vegetables, 15.8% timber and 7.9% medicinal plants. Among all the plant species, the higher diversity was found in fruit species followed by timber species, vegetable species and medicinal species. Most of plant species were found in boundary side of homestead area. Vegetable plant diversity was found high (H' = 0.94-0.72), fruit species was also high (H' = 0.99-0.69), medicinal species was medium to high (H' = 0.62-0.97) and timber plant species was high (H' =0.86-0.94) in different homestead areas. It may be concluded that plant species diversity as observed in Moringa based homestead area could be a good option for biodiversity conservation in Sylhet area of Bangladesh. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

To date, the leading causes of mortality and morbidity worldwide include viral infections, such as Ebola, influenza virus, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and recently COVID-19 disease, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Currently, we can count on a narrow range of antiviral drugs, especially older generation ones like ribavirin and interferon which are effective against viruses in vitro but can often be ineffective in patients. In addition to these, we have antiviral agents for the treatment of herpes virus, influenza virus, HIV and hepatitis virus. Recently, drugs used in the past especially against ebolavirus, such as remdesivir and favipiravir, have been considered for the treatment of COVID-19 disease. However, even if these drugs represent important tools against viral diseases, they are certainly not sufficient to defend us from the multitude of viruses present in the environment. This represents a huge problem, especially considering the unprecedented global threat due to the advancement of COVID-19, which represents a potential risk to the health and life of millions of people. The demand, therefore, for new and effective antiviral drugs is very high. This review focuses on three fundamental points: (1) presents the main threats to human health, reviewing the most widespread viral diseases in the world, thus describing the scenario caused by the disease in question each time and evaluating the specific therapeutic remedies currently available. (2) It comprehensively describes main phytochemical classes, in particular from plant foods, with proven antiviral activities, the viruses potentially treated with the described phytochemicals. (3) Consideration of the various applications of drug delivery systems in order to improve the bioavailability of these compounds or extracts. Abstract

This paper represents a generic feature extraction approach to handle multiple attribute decision analysis problems. For that purpose, available decision support frameworks are carefully studied and the basic types of attributes involved in the decision problems are identified. Based on this analysis, a generic decision support scheme is proposed that can deal with all sorts of attributes in order to deduce the optimal solution for any decision problem. The proposed framework is capable of handling multiple attributes throughout the process of providing a flawless solution for the decision problem under both risk and uncertainty. This paper provides detailed information about the sources of uncertainty in the decision-making process and proposes a sophisticated approach for capturing all sorts of uncertainties. In the proposed approach, a cross assessment of every attribute against the corresponding attribute of the other alternatives is conducted to extract the significant features of an attribute. The relative importance of every attribute is considered as a supporting knowledge representation parameter in order to optimize the attribute-assessment process. The final decision is made based on the numerical scores seized by the alternatives. The paper also represents a numerical study to demonstrate the potential applications of the proposed methodology.

Abstract

We have deduced the emission probability of the 447-keV γ ray from the ɛ+β+ decay of 137Ceg (9.0 h) relative to that of the 254-keV γ ray from the 137Cem (34.4 h) decay in transient equilibrium. The time-dependent factor in transient equilibrium was applied following the Bateman equation for a radioactive decay chain. The isotope was produced via the 139La(p,3n)137Cem,g reaction by bombarding natLa with a proton beam from the 88-in. cyclotron at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. γ-ray intensities were measured using an HPGe detector. The emission probability for the 447-keV γ ray deduced in this work is 1.21(3) (that is 1.21 ± 0.03) per hundred parent decays, which differs significantly from an earlier published value of 2.24(10). We identify the source of this discrepancy to be an incorrect use of the time-dependent factor. Additionally, we have deduced the emission probability of the 504-keV γ ray from the decay of 85Yg (2.68 h) relative to that of the 232-keV γ ray from the 85Srm (1.127 h) decay in transient equilibrium. The isotope was produced via the 86Sr(p,2n)85Yg reaction by bombarding 86SrCO3 with a proton beam at the same facility. The study confirms the assumption of the time-dependent correction for recommending the emission probability of the 504-keV γ ray in the literature. Our work highlights the importance of explicit description by authors of any time-dependent correction they have made when reporting γ-ray intensities for nuclides in transient equilibrium. The need and significance of accurate and precise decay data of 137Ceg and 85Yg in basic science and medicine is briefly outlined.

Legal framework is very crucial to protect the vital resources, to provide rights to public and administration, to support national policy and to bring technological intervention to ensure equitable distribution, fair management, and effective decision making. In Bangladesh, groundwater is not directly priced (other than pumping costs), perhaps such issue is not surprising that users do not meter the volumes of water usage. Beside the industry, agricultural sector is by far the biggest groundwater consumer of this country, contributing significant amount of annual meter drop in the groundwater table to the annual decline of groundwater table. Additionally, the groundwater resources are severely affected by, pollution, encroachment and overexploitation. National Water Policy (1999) and Bangladesh Water Act (2013) are considered as country's pivotal legal framework but both of these lag behind to provide effective guidelines on permission, extraction limit, monitoring, protection of quality, water harvesting procedure, and recharge mechanism. Existing institutions suffer from consistent crisis, politics, corruption, absence of public participation and coordination of other institutions, mismanagement, and empirical assessment. This study evaluates the existing water related policies and functions of multidimensional institutions, and discusses the key challenges of effective groundwater management. Abstract

The study was conducted at Kamalganj Upazila of Moulvibazar district in Bangladesh during January to September 2015 to observe the diversity of plant species in the homestead area with their arrangement and to explore the relationships of plant diversity with the selected characteristics of the respondents. Face to face interview was performed with 135 respondents with the help of questionnaire. A total of 92 plant species, 45 vegetables species were recorded in the homestead of the study area. Out of different categories of plant species, 35 timber, 36 fruits and 21 medicinal and other plants were recorded. Most of fruit plants and medicinal and other plant species were found in front yard and backyard of homestead area. Timber trees were dominated at boundary side than any other side of homesteads. Diversity of fruit (0.79-0.99), timber (0.77-0.93) and medicinal plant species (0.77-0.96) were high in most of the unions. Mango Jackfruit, Papaya, Coconut were dominant fruit species. Acasia hybrid and Mehogony were dominant timber species. Coriander (Coriandrum sativum), Areca nut (Areca catechu), Tulsi (Ocimum americanum), Neem (Azadirachta indica), Bamboo (Bambusa sp), Pudina (Mentha spicata) and Bohera (Terminalia bellerica), were dominant medicinal and other plant species. There was a positive correlation between plant diversity with most of the selected characteristics of the respondents. Results conclude that plant diversity in homestead areas of Kamalganj upazila could be a good option for improving the livelihood of the respondents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
