In-house design and development of cost-effective cable twister was undertaken at ARIES for back-end instruments of 3.6 m telescope at Devasthal site located in central Himalayan region of Uttarakhand state in India. Cable twister was designed to route the critical cables such as cryo/helium flexible lines, electrical cables, optical fiber cables and network cables, etc. of various back-end instruments on axial and side ports of 3.6 m telescope. Designing a space constrained cable twister passing through only 350 mm diameter central hole available in telescope pier was a challenging task. Design was analyzed with cables at different twister positions for telescope azimuth rotation from 0 to + ∕ − 2 7 0 ∘ . Flexible design, easy routing of cables and quick detachable characteristic of cable twister make it convenient for routing cables of back-end instruments of 3.6 m telescope. The twister was economically manufactured in-house at ARIES mechanical workshop, assembled, installed and tested with 3.6 m telescope. Provision for changing of separator plates having different numbers and sizes of holes makes it versatile for the different types of cables in back-end instruments. The eruption of limb prominence on 21 April 2001 associated with two coronal mass ejections (CMEs) is investigated. H α images reveal two large-scale eruptions (a prominence body and a southern foot-point arch), both showing helical internal structure. These two eruptions are found to be spatially and temporally associated with the corresponding CMEs. The kinematics and the study of geometrical parameters of the prominence show that the eruption was quite impulsive (with peak acceleration ≈470 m s−2) and has taken place for relatively low pitch angle of helical threads, not exceeding tan θ≈1.2. The stability criteria of the prominence are revisited in the light of the model of Vršnak (1990, Solar Phys. 129, 295) and the analysis shows that the eruption violates the instability criteria of that model. Finally, the energy stored in the prominence circuit and the energies (kinetic, potential, and magnetic) of the associated CMEs are estimated and it is found that there was enough energy stored in the prominence to drive the two CMEs. We present the results of a detailed analysis of multi-wavelength observations of a very impulsive solar flare 1B/M6.7, which occurred on 10 March, 2001 in NOAA AR 9368 (N27 W42). The observations show that the flare is very impulsive with a very hard spectrum in HXR that reveal that non-thermal emission was most dominant. On the other hand, this flare also produced a type II radio burst and coronal mass ejections (CME), which are not general characteristics for impulsive flares. In Ha we observed bright mass ejecta (BME) followed by dark mass ejecta (DME). Based on the consistency of the onset times and directions of BME and CME, we conclude that these two phenomena are closely associated. It is inferred that the energy build-up took place due to photospheric reconnection between emerging positive parasitic polarity and predominant negative polarity, which resulted as a consequence of flux cancellation. The shear increased to>80? due to further emergence of positive parasitic polarity causing strongly enhanced cancellation of flux. It appears that such enhanced magnetic flux cancellation in a strongly sheared region triggered the impulsive flare. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper we present the analysis of M 1.8 class (GOES SXR) limb flare and associated post flare loops of 2 May, 2001 which erupted on the west limb in NOAA 9433 (N15, W88). The flare started at around 00:32 UT from a small mound of twisted loops. When we started Ha observations at 00:52 UT the flare was in decay phase enveloped by highly sheared/twisted post flare loops which we call as primary post flare loops. The unique feature of this flare was that a new system of loops were developed when the primary loops were almost decaying. We call these newly formed loops as secondary loops. The main aim of the paper is to study the dynamics of the Ha flare/post flare loops and to understand how the magnetic field gets relaxed from highly sheared/twisted stage to a simplified potential field. We have discussed the nature of temporal behavior of the temperature and emission measure of the flare. It centered on various topics of the current solar research spanning over six scientific sessions.

We present the photospheric Doppler enhancement and H α brightening of an X-class solar flare from NOAA AR 11748 observed on 2013 May 15. The flare shows two ribbon structure. We observed four velocity enhancement clusters (kernels) associated with the flaring region. Two clusters P & Q of the velocity enhancement that spatially match with the H α brightening and temporally delayed by 4 min. On the contrary, two other velocity kernels R & S are shifted by 2–3 arcsec from the H α brightening. We study the localized enhancement in velocity clusters associated with H α kernels. The time delay in spatially aligned kernels can be interpreted as penetration of proton beam in the solar atmosphere. The shifted velocity enhancement with respect to H α kernels can be explained by the coupling of energy driven by Lorentz force. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a multi-wavelength study of recurrent surges observed in Hα, UV (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO)/EIT), and Radio (Learmonth, Australia) from the super-active region NOAA 10484 on 2003 October 25. Several bright structures visible in Hα and UV corresponding to subflares are also observed at the base of each surge. Type III bursts are triggered and RHESSI X-ray sources are evident with surge activity. The major surge consists of bunches of ejective paths forming a fan-shaped region with an angular size of (≈65°) during its maximum phase. The ejection speed reaches up to ∼200 km s–1. The SOHO/Michelson Doppler Imager magnetograms reveal that a large dipole emerges from the east side of the active region on 2003 October 18-20, a few days before the surges. On 2003 October 25, the major sunspots were surrounded by “moat regions” with moving magnetic features (MMFs). Parasitic fragmented positive polarities were pushed by the ambient dispersion motion of the MMFs and annihilated with negative polarities at the borders of the moat region of the following spot to produce flares and surges. A topology analysis of the global Sun using Potential Field Source Surface shows that the fan structures visible in the EIT 171 Å images follow magnetic field lines connecting the present active region to a preceding active region in the southeast. Radio observations of Type III bursts indicate that they are coincident with the surges, suggesting that magnetic reconnection is the driver mechanism. The magnetic energy released by the reconnection is transformed into plasma heating and provides the kinetic energy for the ejections. A lack of a radio signature in the high corona suggests that the surges are confined to follow the closed field lines in the fans. We conclude that these cool surges may have some local heating effects in the closed loops, but probably play a minor role in global coronal heating and the surge material does not escape to the solar wind. Prominence oscillations are one of interesting phenomena in the solar atmosphere, which can be utilized to infer the embedded magnetic field magnitude. We present here the transverse oscillations of two different prominences located at the East solar limb on 2011 February 11 using the multi-wavebands data of the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on-board the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) satellite. A prominence eruption was observed towards the east direction with an average speed of ≈ 275 km s−1. The eruption is fitted with the combination of a linear and an exponential functions of time. An extreme ultraviolet (EUV) wave event was associated with the prominence eruption. This EUV wave triggered the oscillations of both prominences on the East limb. We computed the period of each prominence using the wavelet analysis method. The oscillation period varies from 14 to 22 min. We study the solar sources of an intense geomagnetic storm of solar cycle 23 that occurred on 20 November 2003, based on ground- and space-based multiwavelength observations. The coronal mass ejections (CMEs) responsible for the above geomagnetic storm originated from the super-active region NOAA 10501. We investigate the Hα observations of the flare events made with a 15 cm solar tower telescope at ARIES, Nainital, India. The propagation characteristics of the CMEs have been derived from the three-dimensional images of the solar wind ( i.e., density and speed) obtained from the interplanetary scintillation data, supplemented with other ground- and space-based measurements. The TRACE, SXI and Hα observations revealed two successive ejections (of speeds ≈ 350 and ≈ 100 km s), originating from the same filament channel, which were associated with two high speed CMEs (≈ 1223 and ≈ 1660 km s, respectively). These two ejections generated propagating fast shock waves ( i.e., fast-drifting type II radio bursts) in the corona. The interaction of these CMEs along the Sun-Earth line has led to the severity of the storm. According to our investigation, the interplanetary medium consisted of two merging magnetic clouds (MCs) that preserved their identity during their propagation. These magnetic clouds made the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) southward for a long time, which reconnected with the geomagnetic field, resulting the super-storm ( Dst=−472 nT) on the Earth. The active region NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) AR 10486 which appeared on the solar disc in 2003 October produced a lot of space weather related activity. Here, we report on the co-spatial evolution of the photospheric Doppler enhancements and the chromospheric Hα flare ribbons observed during the 4B/X17.2 class solar flare of 2003 October 28 in this active region. These velocity enhancements exactly match the Hα brightness enhancements in space, and are delayed by approximately 1 min in time. Hα brightness attains a maximum nearly at the same time as the peak seen in light curves in high-energy emission observed by KORONAS ( Kuznetsov et al. 2006 ). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present Hα observations from ARIES (Nainital) of a compact and impulsive solar flare that occurred on March 10, 2001 and which was associated with a CME. We have also analyzed HXT, SXT/ Yohkoh observations as well as radio observations from the Nobeyama Radio Observatory to derive the energetics and dynamics of this impulsive flare. We coalign the Hα, SXR, HXR, MW, and magnetogram images within the instrumental spatial-resolution limit. We detect a single HXR source in this flare, which is found spatially associated with one of the Hα bright kernels. The unusual feature of HXR and Hα sources, observed for the first time, is the rotation during the impulsive phase in a clockwise direction. We propose that the rotation may be due to asymmetric progress of the magnetic reconnection site or may be due to the change of the peak point of the electric field. In MW emission we found two sources. The main source is at the main flare site and another is in the southwest direction. It appears that the remote source is formed by the impact of accelerated energetic electrons from the main flare site. From the spatial correlation of multiwavelength images of the different sources, we conclude that this flare has a three-legged structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, we investigate an extreme ultraviolet (EUV) wave event on 2010 February 11, which occurred as a limb event from the Earth viewpoint and a disk event from the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory-Behind viewpoint. We use the data obtained by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory in various EUV channels. The EUV wave event was launched by a partial prominence eruption. Compared with some EUV wave events in previous works, this EUV wave event contains a faster wave with a speed of ∼445 ± 6 km s−1, which we call a coronal Moreton wave, and a slower wave with a speed of ∼298 ± 5 km s−1, which we call the Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT) wave. The coronal Moreton wave is identified as a fast-mode wave and the EIT wave is identified as an apparent propagation due to successive field-line stretching. We also observe a stationary front associated with the fast-mode EUV wave. This stationary front is explained as mode conversion from the coronal Moreton wave to a slow-mode wave near a streamer. We present Hα CCD observations of three small-to-medium-size two-ribbon flares observed in the giant AR 9433 on 24 April 2001. Flare observations at other associated wavelengths (e.g., soft X-rays (SXR), hard X-rays (HXR), microwaves (MW)) obtained from archives are also presented and compared. We have tested the Neupert effect for the most energetic third flare. The flare observations are in agreement with the thick-target model. In the case of this flare the HXR emitting electrons appears to be the heating source of SXR and Hα emissions. The flares are also studied in EUV and UV emissions using TRACE data. We discuss the complexity of the magnetic field using SOHO/MDI magnetograms. The flares are observed to occur in both (f/p) polarity regions in highly sheared magnetic field with emerging flux regions and MMFs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The partial eruption of a filament channel with bifurcated substructures is investigated using data sets obtained from both ground-based and space-borne facilities. Small-scale flux reconnection/cancellation events in the region triggered the pile-up of ambient magnetic field, observed as bright extreme ultraviolet (EUV) loops in close proximity to the filament channel. This led to the formation of a V-shaped cusp structure at the site of interaction between the coalesced EUV loops and the filament channel, with the presence of distinct plasmoid structures and associated bidirectional flows. Analysis of imaging data from SDO /AIA further suggests vertical splitting of the filament structure into two substructures. The perturbed upper branch of the filament structure rose up and erupted with the onset of an energetic GOES M1.4 flare at 04:30 ut on 2015 January 28. The estimated twist number and squashing factor obtained from non-linear force free-field extrapolation of the magnetic field data support the vertical split in the filament structure with high twist in the upper substructure. The loss in equilibrium of the upper branch due to torus instability implies that this is a potential triggering mechanism for the observed partial eruption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the early 1990s, it was found that the strongest disturbances of the space-weather were associated with huge ejections of plasma from the solar corona, which took the form of magnetic clouds when moved from the Sun. It is the collisions of the magnetic clouds with the Earth's magnetosphere that lead to strong, sometimes catastrophic changes in space-weather. The onset of a coronal mass ejection (CME) is sudden and no reliable forerunners of CMEs have been found till date. The CME prediction methodologies are less developed compared to the methods developed for the prediction of solar flares. The most probable initial magnetic configuration of a CME is a flux rope consisting of twisted field lines which fill the whole volume of a dark coronal cavity. The flux ropes can be in stable equilibrium in the coronal magnetic field for weeks and even months, but suddenly they lose their stability and erupt with high speed. Their transition to the unstable phase depends on the parameters of the flux rope (i.e., total electric current, twist, mass loading, etc.), as well as on the properties of the ambient coronal magnetic field. One of the major governing factors is the vertical gradient of the coronal magnetic field, which is estimated as decay index ( n). Cold dense prominence material can be collected in the lower parts of the helical flux tubes. Filaments are, therefore, good tracers of the flux ropes in the corona, which become visible long before the beginning of the eruption. The perspectives of the filament eruptions and following CMEs can be estimated by a comparison of observed filament heights with calculated decay index distributions. The present paper reviews the formation of magnetic flux ropes, their stable and unstable phases, eruption conditions, and also discusses their physical implications in the solar corona. We present multi-wavelength observations of an asymmetric filament eruption and associated coronal mass ejection (CME) and coronal downflows on 2012 June 17 and 18 from 20:00-05:00 UT. We use SDO/AIA and STEREO-B/SECCHI observations to understand the filament eruption scenario and its kinematics, while LASCO C2 observations are analyzed to study the kinematics of the CME and associated downflows. SDO/AIA limb observations show that the filament exhibits a whipping-like asymmetric eruption. STEREO/EUVI disk observations reveal a two-ribbon flare underneath the southeastern part of the filament that most probably occurred due to reconnection processes in the coronal magnetic field in the wake of the filament eruption. The whipping-like filament eruption later produces a slow CME in which the leading edge and the core propagate, with an average speed of ≈540 km s-1 and ≈126 km s-1, respectively, as observed by the LASCO C2 coronagraph. The CME core formed by the eruptive flux rope shows outer coronal downflows with an average speed of ≈56 km s-1 after reaching ≈4.33 R☉. Initially, the core decelerates at ≈48 m s-2. The plasma first decelerates gradually up to a height of ≈4.33 R☉ and then starts accelerating downward. We suggest a self-consistent model of a magnetic flux rope representing the magnetic structure of the CME core formed by an eruptive filament. This rope loses its previous stable equilibrium when it reaches a critical height. With some reasonable parameters, and inherent physical conditions, the model describes the non-radial ascending motion of the flux rope in the corona, its stopping at some height, and thereafter its downward motion. We present the multiwavelength observations of a flux rope that was trying to erupt from NOAA AR 11045 and the associated M-class solar flare on 12 February 2010 using space-based and ground-based observations from TRACE, STEREO, SOHO/MDI, Hinode/XRT, and BBSO. While the flux rope was rising from the active region, an M1.1/2F class flare was triggered near one of its footpoints. We suggest that the flare triggering was due to the reconnection of a rising flux rope with the surrounding low-lying magnetic loops. The flux rope reached a projected height of ≈0.15 R with a speed of ≈90 km s while the soft X-ray flux enhanced gradually during its rise. The flux rope was suppressed by an overlying field, and the filled plasma moved towards the negative polarity field to the west of its activation site. We found the first observational evidence of the initial suppression of a flux rope due to a remnant filament visible both at chromospheric and coronal temperatures that evolved a couple of days earlier at the same location in the active region. SOHO/MDI magnetograms show the emergence of a bipole ≈12 h prior to the flare initiation. The emerged negative polarity moved towards the flux rope activation site, and flare triggering near the photospheric polarity inversion line (PIL) took place. The motion of the negative polarity region towards the PIL helped in the build-up of magnetic energy at the flare and flux rope activation site. This study provides unique observational evidence of a rising flux rope that failed to erupt due to a remnant filament and overlying magnetic field, as well as associated triggering of an M-class flare. Abstract: This paper presents the study of normalized north–south asymmetry, cumulative normalized north–south asymmetry and cumulative difference indices of sunspot areas, solar active prominences (at total, low (⩽40°) and high (⩾50°) latitudes) and Hα solar flares from 1964 to 2008 spanning the solar cycles 20–23. Three different statistical methods are used to obtain the asymmetric behavior of different solar activity features. Hemispherical distribution of activity features shows the dominance of activities in northern hemisphere for solar cycle 20 and in southern hemisphere for solar cycles 21–23 excluding solar active prominences at high latitudes. Cumulative difference index of solar activity features in each solar cycle is observed at the maximum of the respective solar cycle suggesting a cyclic behavior of approximately one solar cycle length. Asymmetric behavior of all activity features except solar active prominences at high latitudes hints at the long term periodic trend of eight solar cycles. North–south asymmetries of SAP (H) express the specific behavior of solar activity at high solar latitudes and its behavior in long-time scale is distinctly opposite to those of other activity features. Our results show that in most cases the asymmetry is statistically highly significant meaning thereby that the asymmetries are real features in the N–S distribution of solar activity features. The outer atmosphere of the sun - called the corona - has been observed during total solar eclipse for short periods (typically < 6 min), from as early as the eighteenth century. In the recent past, space-based instruments have permitted us to study the corona uninterruptedly. In spite of these developments, the dynamic corona and its high temperature (1-2 million K) are yet to be fully understood. It is conjectured that their dynamic nature and associated energetic events are possible reasons behind the high temperature. In order to study these in detail, a visible emission line space solar coronagraph is being proposed as a payload under the small-satellite programme of the Indian Space Research Organisation. The satellite is named as Aditya-1 and the scientific objectives of this payload are to study: (i) the existence of intensity oscillations for the study of wavedriven coronal heating; (ii) the dynamics and formation of coronal loops and temperature structure of the coronal features; (iii) the origin, cause and acceleration of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and other solar active features, and (iv) coronal magnetic field topology and three-dimensional structures of CMEs using polarization information. The uniqueness of this payload compared to previously flown space instruments is as follows: (a) observations in the visible wavelength closer to the disk (down to 1.05 solar radii); (b) high time cadence capability (better than two-images per second), and (c) simultaneous observations of at least two spectral windows all the time and three spectral windows for short durations. We present a multiwavelength analysis of a long-duration, white-light solar flare (M8.9/3B) event that occurred on 04 June 2007 from AR NOAA 10960. The flare was observed by several spaceborne instruments, namely SOHO/MDI, Hinode/SOT, TRACE, and STEREO/SECCHI. The flare was initiated near a small, positive-polarity, satellite sunspot at the center of the active region, surrounded by opposite-polarity field regions. MDI images of the active region show a considerable amount of changes in the small positive-polarity sunspot of δ configuration during the flare event. SOT/G-band (4305 Å) images of the sunspot also suggest the rapid evolution of this positive-polarity sunspot with highly twisted penumbral filaments before the flare event, which were oriented in a counterclockwise direction. It shows the change in orientation, and also the remarkable disappearance of twisted penumbral filaments (≈35 – 40%) and enhancement in umbral area (≈45 – 50%) during the decay phase of the flare. TRACE and SECCHI observations reveal the successive activation of two helically-twisted structures associated with this sunspot, and the corresponding brightening in the chromosphere as observed by the time-sequence of SOT/Ca ii H line (3968 Å) images. The secondary, helically-twisted structure is found to be associated with the M8.9 flare event. The brightening starts six – seven minutes prior to the flare maximum with the appearance of a secondary, helically-twisted structure. The flare intensity maximizes as the secondary, helically-twisted structure moves away from the active region. This twisted flux tube, associated with the flare triggering, did not launch a CME. The location of the flare activity is found to coincide with the activation site of the helically-twisted structures. We conclude that the activation of successive helical twists (especially the second one) in the magnetic-flux tubes/ropes plays a crucial role in the energy build-up process and the triggering of the M-class solar flare without a coronal mass ejection (CME). Abstract: This paper presents statistical analysis of Soft X-ray (SXR) flares during the period January 1976 to December 2007 covering solar cycles (SCs) 21, 22 and 23. We have analysed north–south (N–S) and east–west (E–W) asymmetry of SXR flares at total (1–90°), low (1–40°) and high (50–90°) latitudes and center meridian distances (CMDs). We have also presented the N–S and E–W asymmetry of different intensity classes (B, C, M and X) during the period of investigation. A slight southern and eastern excess is found after analysis during SCs 21, 22 and 23. N–S distribution shows that the SXR flare events are most prolific in the 11–20° latitude band in the northern and southern hemispheres whereas E–W distribution does not show any prolific band. We found that the N–S and E–W asymmetry which often peaks near the activity minimum is in agreement with the theoretical dynamo models. Our results show that N–S asymmetry is statistically more significant than E–W asymmetry. It is revealed that the SXR flare activity (M and C class flares) during SC 23 is low as compared to the SC 22, indicating the violation of Gnevyshev–Ohl rule. The B class flare activity is higher for SC 23 whereas C, M and X class activities are higher for SC 21. We have also analysed the flare evolution parameters, i.e. duration, rise time, decay time and event asymmetry for total SXR as well as for different classes during last three SCs. The duration, rise time and decay time increase with increasing intensity class. The increase is more pronounced for the duration and decay time than for the rise time for SCs 21 and 22 while for SC 23 it is the same for duration, rise time and decay time. On analyzing event asymmetry indices, we found more positive values during SC 21 and SC 22 , but for SC 23 we have more negative values . Our study shows that during SC 23 we have more SXR flare events having shorter decay time than the rise time as compared to SCs 21 and 22. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

In this study, we present the observations of extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) waves associated with an M6.5 flare on 2013 April 11. The event was observed by Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) in different EUV channels. The flare was also associated with a halo CME and type II radio bursts. We observed both fast and slow components of the EUV wave. The speed of the fast component, which is identified as a fast-mode MHD wave, varies in the range from 600 to 640 km s − 1 , whereas the speed of the slow-component is ≈ 140 km s − 1 . We observed the unusual phenomenon that, as the fast-component EUV wave passes through two successive magnetic quasi-separatrix layers (QSLs), two stationary wave fronts are formed locally. We propose that part of the outward-propagating fast-mode EUV wave is converted into slow-mode magnetohydrodynamic waves, which are trapped in local magnetic field structures, forming successive stationary fronts. Along the other direction, the fast-component EUV wave also creates oscillations in a coronal loop lying ≈ 225 Mm away from the flare site. We present observations of a confined partial eruption of a filament on 2012 August 4, which restores its initial shape within ≈2 hr after eruption. From the Global Oscillation Network Group Hα observations, we find that the filament plasma turns into dynamic motion at around 11:20 UT from the middle part of the filament toward the northwest direction with an average speed of ≈105 km s–1. A little brightening underneath the filament possibly shows the signature of low-altitude reconnection below the filament eruptive part. In Solar Dynamics Observatory/Atmospheric Imaging Assembly 171 Å images, we observe an activation of right-handed helically twisted magnetic flux rope that contains the filament material and confines it during its dynamical motion. The motion of cool filament plasma stops after traveling a distance of ≈215 Mm toward the northwest from the point of eruption. The plasma moves partly toward the right foot point of the flux rope, while most of the plasma returns after 12:20 UT toward the left foot point with an average speed of ≈60 km s–1 to reform the filament within the same stable magnetic structure. On the basis of the filament internal fine structure and its position relative to the photospheric magnetic fields, we find filament chirality to be sinistral, while the activated enveloping flux rope shows a clear right-handed twist. Thus, this dynamic event is an apparent example of one-to-one correspondence between the filament chirality (sinistral) and the enveloping flux rope helicity (positive). From the coronal magnetic field decay index, n, calculation near the flux rope axis, it is evident that the whole filament axis lies within the domain of stability (i.e., n < 1), which provides the filament stability despite strong disturbances at its eastern foot point.
