The article addresses differentiation and integration in organizations. The author explains why organizations tend to differentiate themselves into three similar divisions--sales, production, and research and development--and outlines the challenges of integration. The article examines organizational structure in relation to social and industrial development and postulates that organizations take their cues from other social constructs such as kinship groups and political hierarchies. Using data collected from 359 work organizations in various countries, the article explores the social derivation of traditional work organization, contractual work and differentiation, and the external forces that shape differentiation within organizations.
