In recent years, quantum computing has evolved as an exciting frontier, with the development of numerous algorithms dedicated to constructing quantum circuits that adeptly represent quantum many-body states. However, this domain remains in its early stages and requires further refinement to understand better the effective construction of highly-entangled quantum states within quantum circuits. Here, we demonstrate that quantum many-body states can be universally represented using a quantum circuit comprising multi-qubit gates. Furthermore, we evaluate the efficiency of a quantum circuit constructed with two-qubit gates in quench dynamics for the transverse-field Ising model. In this specific model, despite the initial state being classical without entanglement, it undergoes long-time evolution, eventually leading to a highly-entangled quantum state. Our results reveal that a diamond-shaped quantum circuit, designed to approximate the multi-qubit gate-based quantum circuit, remarkably excels in accurately representing the long-time dynamics of the system. Moreover, the diamond-shaped circuit follows the volume law behavior in entanglement entropy, offering a significant advantage over alternative quantum circuit constructions employing two-qubit gates., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures

Resonant driving of electronic transitions with coherent laser sources creates quantum coherent superpositions of the involved electronic states. Most time-resolved studies have focused on gases or isolated subsystems embedded in insulating solids, aiming for applications in quantum information. Here, we demonstrate coherent control of orbital wavefunctions in pyrochlore $Tb_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7}$, which forms an interacting spin liquid ground state. We show that resonant excitation with a strong THz pulse creates a coherent superposition of the lowest energy Tb 4f states before the magnetic interactions eventually dephase them. The coherence manifests itself as a macroscopic oscillating magnetic dipole, which is detected by ultrafast resonant x-ray diffraction. The induced quantum coherence demonstrates coherent control of orbital wave functions, a new tool for the ultrafast manipulation and investigation of quantum materials.

We propose a data-driven technique to infer microscopic physical quantities from nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR) spectra, in which the data size and quality required for the Bayesian inference are investigated. The $^{59}$Co-NMR measurement of YbCo$_2$Zn$_{20}$ single crystal generates complex spectra with 28 peaks. By exploiting the site symmetry in the crystal structure, the isotropic Knight shift $K_{iso}$ and nuclear quadrupole resonance(NQR) frequency $\nu_Q$ were estimated to be $K_{iso} = 0.7822 \pm 0.0090 \%$, $\nu_Q = 2.008 \pm 0.016$ MHz ( T = 20 K, H $\simeq$ 10.2 T) by analyzing only 30 data points from one spectrum. The estimation of $\nu_Q$ is consistent with the precise value obtained in the NQR experiment. Our method can significantly reduce the measurement time and the computational cost of data analysis in NMR experiments., Comment: 9 pages

We report a soft x-ray resonant magnetic scattering study of the spin configuration in multiferroic thin films of Co$_{0.975}$Ge$_{0.025}$Cr$_2$O$_4$ (Ge-CCO) and CoCr$_2$O$_4$ (CCO), under low- and high-magnetic fields, from 0.2 T up to 6.5 T. A characterization of Ge-CCO at a low magnetic field is performed and the results are compared to those of pure CCO. The ferrimagnetic phase transition temperature $T_C \approx 95$ K and the multiferroic transition temperature $T_S \approx 27$ K in Ge-CCO are comparable to those observed in CCO. In Ge-CCO, the ordering wave vector $\textit{(qq0)}$ observed below $T_S$ is slightly larger compared to that of CCO, and, unlike CCO, the diffraction intensity consists of two contributions that show a dissimilar x-ray polarization dependence. In Ge-CCO, the coercive field observed at low temperatures was larger than the one reported for CCO. In both compounds, an unexpected reversal of the spiral helicity and therefore the electric polarization was observed on simply magnetic field cooling. In addition, we find a change in the helicity as a function of momentum transfer in the magnetic diffraction peak of Ge-CCO, indicative of the presence of multiple magnetic spirals., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures

Below its N\'eel temperature, the frustrated magnet CdCr$_2$O$_4$ exhibits an antiferromagnetic spin-spiral ground state. Such states can give rise to a sizable magnetoelectric coupling. In this report, we measure the electric polarization induced in single-crystalline CdCr$_2$O$_4$ by a large applied magnetic field. Because the detection of a macroscopic polarization is hindered by the structural domains in the tetragonal spin-spiral phase, we have pioneered an alternative method of measuring polarization induced by high magnetic fields, using electrostatic force microscopy. This method enables us to measure polarization from nanometer sized areas of the sample surface, as well as imaging how to charge inhomogeneities change with magnetic field., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We report on negative thermal expansion (NTE) in the high-field, half-magnetization plateau phase of the frustrated magnetic insulator CdCr2O4. Using dilatometry, we precisely map the phase diagram at fields of up to 30T, and identify a strong NTE associated with the collinear half-magnetization plateau for B > 27T. The resulting phase diagram is compared with a microscopic theory for spin-lattice coupling, and the origin of the NTE is identified as a large negative change in magnetization with temperature, coming from a nearly-localised band of spin excitations in the plateau phase. A classical analogue of the entanglement entropy is calculated on the system boundary of the two-dimensional Edwards-Anderson model, where the nearest-neighbor interaction is stochastically chosen from +J and -J. The boundary spin distribution is obtained by means of the time-evolving block decimation (TEBD) method, where the random ensemble is created from the successive multiplications of position-dependent transfer matrices, whose width is up to N = 300. The random average of the entanglement entropy is calculated on the Nishimori line, and it is confirmed that the entanglement entropy shows critical singularity at the Nishimori point. Spin fluctuations were studied over a wide momentum ($\hbar Q$) and energy ($E$) space in the frustrated $d$-electron heavy-fermion metal LiV$_2$O$_4$ by time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering. We observed the overall $Q$$-$$E$ evolutions near the characteristic $Q=0.6$ {\AA}$^{-1}$ peak and found another weak broad magnetic peak around 2.4 {\AA}$^{-1}$. The data are described by a simple response function, a highly itinerant magnetic form factor, and antiferromagnetic short-range spatial correlations, indicating that heavy-fermion formation is attributable to spin-orbit fluctuations with orbital hybridization., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We report on the phonon spectrum of Ba3Cr2O8 determined by infrared spectroscopy, and on specific heat measurements across the Jahn-Teller transition in magnetic fields up to 9 T. Phonon modes split below the Jahn-Teller transition, which occurs at T_{JT} = 70 K as detected by specific heat measurements. The field-dependent specific heat data is analyzed in terms of the contributions from lattice, magnetic and orbital degrees of freedom. In contrast to the isostructural compound Sr3Cr2O8 our analysis does not indicate the existence of orbital fluctuations below the Jahn-Teller transition in Ba3Cr2O8., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We discuss the QCD phase diagram from two different point of view. We first investigate the phase diagram structure in the strong coupling lattice QCD with Polyakov loop effects, and show that the the chiral and Z_{N_c} deconfinement transition boundaries deviate at finite mu as suggested from large N_c arguments. Next we discuss the possibility to probe the QCD critical point during prompt black hole formation processes. The thermodynamical evolution during the black hole formation would result in quark matter formation, and the critical point in isospin asymmetric matter may be swept. (T,mu_B) region probed in heavy-ion collisions and the black hole formation processes covers most of the critical point locations predicted in recent lattice Monte-Carlo simulations and chiral effective models., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures. Spin fluctuation in LiV2O4 is revisited by examining the earlier result of muon spin rotation/ relaxation measurements. Instead of a relationship for the localized electron limit, one for itinerant electron systems between muon depolarization rate and spin fluctuation rate ({\nu}_D) is employed to re-analyze data, which reveals that {\nu}D varies linearly with temperature ({\nu}_D {\propto} T) over a range 10^8-10^{12} /s for 0.02 {\le} T < 102 K. Such a linear-T behavior as well as the magnitude of {\nu}_D is fully consistent with that of the magnetic relaxation rate previously observed by inelastic neutron scattering (INS), demonstrating that {\mu}SR and INS have a common time window over the fluctuation spectrum. The linear-T dependence of {\nu}_D is understood as a specific feature predicted by a Hubbard model for intersecting one-dimensional (1D) chains. This quasi-1D character, which is co-existent with enhanced uniform susceptibility at low temperatures, supports the scenario of 1D-to-3D crossover for the microscopic origin of heavy-fermion behavior in LiV2O4., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Using inelastic x-ray scattering we have investigated lattice vibrations in a geometric frustrated system CdCr2O4 that upon cooling undergoes a spin-Peierls phase transition at TN = 7.8 K from a cubic and paramagnetic to a tetragonal and Neel state. Phonon modes measured around Brillouin zone boundaries show energy shifts when the transition occurs. Our analysis shows that the shifting can be understood as the ordinary effects of the lowering of the crystal symmetry.

A hexamer-type spin excitation seen in spinel chromates $A$Cr$_2$O$_4$ ($A$ = Mg, Zn, or Cd) is the representative spin-liquid-like state caused by geometrical frustration. To clarify an origin of the state, we comparatively studied spin excitations in an isomorphic material HgCr$_2$O$_4$ by inelastic neutron scattering, and observed a different molecular-type excitation. Numerical analyses performed using model Hamiltonians suggest that these two types of spin excitations originate from a spin-3/2 molecular singlet hidden in a magnetically ordered phase. The difference between the molecular types is explained by the difference in the kind of exchange interactions occurring in the chromates., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

We discuss the possibility to probe the QCD critical point during the dynamical black hole formation from a gravitational collapse of a massive star, where the temperature and the baryon chemical potential become as high as T ~ 90 MeV and $\mu_B$ ~ 1300 MeV. Comparison with the phase boundary in chiral effective models suggests that quark matter is likely to be formed before the horizon is formed. Furthermore, the QCD critical point may be probed during the black hole formation. The critical point is found to move in the lower temperature direction in asymmetric nuclear matter, and in some of the chiral models it is found to be in the reachable region during the black hole formation processes., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

We study the stability of solid- and supersolid (SS) phases of a three-dimensional spin- and a hardcore-Bose-Hubbard models on a body-centered cubic lattice. To see the quantum effects on the stability of the SS phase, we model the vacancies (interstitials) introduced in the solid, which are believed responsible for the appearance of the SS phase, by spinwave bosons and adopt the interaction between the condensed bosons as a criterion. A repulsive nature of the low-energy effective interaction is the necessary condition for a second-order solid-SS transition and, when this condition is met, normally the SS phase is expected. In calculating the effective interaction, we use expansions from the semiclassical- (i.e. large-S) and the Ising limit combined with the ladder approximation. The impact of quantum fluctuations crucially depends on the energy of the solid phase and that of the superfluid phase at half filling. As an application to 4He, we study the parameter region in the vicinity of the fitting parameter set given by Liu and Fisher. For this parameters set, quantum fluctuations at the second order in 1/S destabilize the solid phase, which is supposed to be stable within the mean field theory., Comment: 16pages, 14figures

We study high-field phase diagram and low-energy excitations of three-dimensional quantum helimagnets. Slightly below the saturation field, the emergence of magnetic order may be mathematically viewed as Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of magnons. The method of dilute Bose gas enables an unbiased quantitative analysis of quantum effects in three-dimensional helimagnets and thereby three phases are found: cone, coplanar fan and an attraction-dominant one. To investigate the last phase, we extend the usual BEC approach so that we can handle 2-magnon bound states. In the case of 2-magnon BEC, the transverse magnetization vanishes and long-range order occurs in the quadrupolar channel (spin-nematic phase). As an application, we map out the phase diagram of a 3D helimagnet which consists of frustrated J1-J2 chains coupled by an interchain interaction J3., Comment: 4pages, 3figures, International Conference on Magnetism (ICM) 2009 (Karlsruhe, Germany, July 26-31, 2009).

Using an elastic neutron scattering technique under a pulsed magnetic field up to 30 T, we determined the magnetic structure in the half-magnetization plateau phase in the spinel CdCr$_2$O$_4$. The magnetic structure has a cubic $P4_3$32 symmetry, which is the same as that observed in HgCr$_2$O$_4$. This suggests that there is a universal field induced spin-lattice coupling mechanism at work in the Cr-based spinels., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

By using bulk magnetization, electron spin resonance (ESR), heat capacity, and neutron scattering techniques, we characterize the thermodynamic and quantum phase diagrams of Ba$_3$Cr$_2$O$_8$. Our ESR measurements indicate that the low field paramagnetic ground state is a mixed state of the singlet and the S$_z$ = 0 triplet for $H \perp c$. This suggests the presence of an intra-dimer Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interaction with a DM vector perpendicular to the c-axis.

Using single crystal inelastic neutron scattering with and without application of an external magnetic field and powder neutron diffraction, we have characterized magnetic interactions in Ba$_3$Cr$_2$O$_8$. Even without field, we found that there exist three singlet-to-triplet excitation modes in $(h,h,l)$ scattering plane. Our complete analysis shows that the three modes are due to spatially anisotropic interdimer interactions that are induced by local distortions of the tetrahedron of oxygens surrounding the Jahn-Teller active Cr$^{5+} (3d^1)$. The strong intradimer coupling of $J_0 = 2.38(2)$ meV and weak interdimer interactions ($|J_{\rm inter}| \leq 0.52(2)$ meV) makes Ba$_3$Cr$_2$O$_8$ a good model system for weakly-coupled $s = 1/2$ quantum spin dimers.

We study the ground state and the magnetization process of a spin-1/2 $J_1$-$J_2$ model with a plaquette structure by using various methods. For small inter-plaquette interaction, this model is expected to have a spin-gap and we computed the first- and the second excitation energies. If the gap of the lowest excitation closes, the corresponding particle condenses to form magnetic orders. By analyzing the quintet gap and magnetic interactions among the quintet excitations, we find a spin-nematic phase around $J_1/J_2\sim -2$ due to the strong frustration and the quantum effect. When high magnetic moment is applied, not the spin-1 excitations but the spin-2 ones soften and dictate the magnetization process. We apply a mean-field approximation to the effective Hamiltonian to find three different types of phases (a conventional BEC phase, ``striped'' supersolid phases and a 1/2-plateau). Unlike the BEC in spin-dimer systems, this BEC phase is not accompanied by transverse magnetization. Magnetic systems are fertile ground for the emergence of exotic states when the magnetic interactions cannot be satisfied simultaneously due to the topology of the lattice - a situation known as geometrical frustration. Spinels, AB2O4, can realize the most highly frustrated network of corner-sharing tetrahedra. Several novel states have been discovered in spinels, such as composite spin clusters and novel charge-ordered states. Here we use neutron and synchrotron X-ray scattering to characterize the fractional magnetization state of HgCr2O4 under an external magnetic field, H. When the field is applied in its Neel ground state, a phase transition occurs at H ~ 10 Tesla at which each tetrahedron changes from a canted Neel state to a fractional spin state with the total spin, Stet, of S/2 and the lattice undergoes orthorhombic to cubic symmetry change. Our results provide the microscopic one-to-one correspondence between the spin state and the lattice distortion.

We report 51V NMR experiments in the metallic phase of the quasi-one-dimensional (1D) conductor beta-Sr0.33V2O5. The Knight shift and the quadrupole splitting of all six vanadium sites were determined as a function of the direction of magnetic field perpendicular to the conducting b-axis. Magnetic properties of the three 1D structural units are remarkably heterogeneous. In particular, the V2 ladder unit shows pronounced charge disproportionation among the two (V2a and V2b) sites. At one of these sites, the absolute value of the Knight shift and 1/(T1T) increase steeply with decreasing temperature, suggesting development of ferromagnetic correlation., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to J. Using elastic and inelastic neutron scattering we show that a cubic spinel, CdCr$_2$O$_4$, undergoes an elongation along the c-axis ($c > a = b$) at its spin-Peierls-like phase transition at $T_N$ = 7.8 K. The N\'{e}el phase ($T < T_N$) has an incommesurate spin structure with a characteristic wave vector \textbf{Q}$_M$ = (0,$\delta$,1) with $\delta \sim$ 0.09 and with spins lying on the $ac$-plane. This is in stark contrast to another well-known Cr-based spinel, ZnCr$_2$O$_4$, that undergoes a c-axis contraction and a commensurate spin order. The magnetic excitations of the incommensurate N\'{e}el state has a weak anisotropy gap of 0.6 meV and it consists of at least three bands extending up to 5 meV., Comment: PRL in press

The neutron capture cross section of the unstable s-process branching nucleus 185W has been derived from experimental data of the inverse 186W(g,n)185W photodisintegration taken with monochromatic photon beams from laser Compton scattering. The result of sigma = 553 +- 60 mb at kT = 30 keV leads to a relatively high effective neutron density in the classical s-process of N_n = 4.7 \times 10^8 cm^-3. A realistic model for the s-process in thermally pulsing AGB stars overestimates the abundance of 186Os significantly because of the relatively small neutron capture cross section of 185W., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

Our powder inelastic neutron scattering data indicate that \zvo is a system of spin chains that are three dimensionally tangled in the cubic phase above 50 K due to randomly occupied $t_{2g}$ orbitals of V$^{3+}$ ($3d^2$) ions. Below 50 K in the tetragonal phase, the chains become straight due to antiferro-orbital ordering. This is evidenced by the characteristic wave vector dependence of the magnetic structure factor that changes from symmetric to asymmetric at the cubic-to-tetragonal transition.

Ferromagnetism has been reported recently in La-doped alkaline-earth hexaborides, A1-xLaxB6 (A=Ca, Sr, and Ba). We have performed the reflectivity, Hall resistivity, and magnetization measurements of A1-xLaxB6. The results indicate that A1-xLaxB6 can be regarded as a simple doped semimetal, with no signature of an excitonic state as suggested by several theories. It is also found that the surface of as-grown samples (10 micrometer in thickness) has a different electronic structure from a bulk one, and a fairly large number of paramagnetic moments are confined in this region. After eliminating these paramagnetic moments at the surface, we could not find any evidence of an intrinsic ferromagnetic moment in our samples, implying the possibility that the ferromagnetism of A1-xLaxB6 reported so far is neither intrinsic., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures
