The examination of Salvia verticillata extract encompassed an exploration of its anti-Candida properties, phytochemical composition, antioxidant activity, and the quantification of total tannins. The use of ethanol as a solvent yielded the highest extraction efficiency at 26.1%. The plant exhibited a substantial tannin content of 6.5 mg/kg, signifying a noteworthy concentration. The inhibitory zones against Candida tropicalis reached a minimum diameter of 17.6 mm, while Candida guilliermondii displayed the most significant inhibition with a zone diameter of 21.8 mm. The minor inhibitory concentration (MIC) findings for all Candida species ranged from 6.25 to 12.5 g/ml. In the case of Candida guilliermondii, the synthetic antifungal activity FLU/25 demonstrated a maximal inhibition zone measuring 39.30 mm. Additionally, the maximum antioxidant activity, recorded at 0.3 ml, reached a value of 98.65. Phytochemical screening unveiled elevated concentrations of phenols and flavonoids, with malic acid (1901.1 g/g), hesperidin (302.4 g/g), and rosmarinic acid (30619.93 g/g) all experiencing an increase in concentration. These findings provide a comprehensive understanding of the diverse bioactive components and properties associated with Salvia verticillata extract.

Abstract Due to their effective ionic-to-electronic signal conversion and mechanical flexibility, organic neural implants hold considerable promise for biocompatible neural interfaces. Current approaches are, however, primarily limited to passive electrodes due to a lack of circuit components to realize complex active circuits at the front-end. Here, we introduce a p-n organic electrochemical diode using complementary p- and n-type conducting polymer films embedded in a 15-μm -diameter vertical stack. Leveraging the efficient motion of encapsulated cations inside this polymer stack and the opposite doping mechanisms of the constituent polymers, we demonstrate high current rectification ratios ( $${10}^{5}$$ 10 5 ) and fast switching speeds (230 μs). We integrate p-n organic electrochemical diodes with organic electrochemical transistors in the front-end pixel of a recording array. This configuration facilitates the access of organic electrochemical transistor output currents within a large network operating in the same electrolyte, while minimizing crosstalk from neighboring elements due to minimized reverse-biased leakage. Furthermore, we use these devices to fabricate time-division-multiplexed amplifier arrays. Lastly, we show that, when fabricated in a shank format, this technology enables the multiplexing of amplified local field potentials directly in the active recording pixel (26-μm diameter) in a minimally invasive form factor with shank cross-sectional dimensions of only 50×8 $${\mu m}^{2}$$ μ m 2 .

Coxal bone, which is included in the structure of the pelvic skeleton, is in close relationship with the pelvic organs and great vessels. The aim of this study is to show the harmony between morphometric measurements using the correlation technique, based on the idea that the proportional harmony in different parts of our body will also be in the coxal bone. In the study, 95 dry coxal bone belonging to the Turkish population were examined. In dry bones of adults, the distance between anterior superior iliac spine and posterior superior iliac spine (A), distance between anterior inferior iliac spine and posterior inferior iliac spine (B), distance between anterior superior iliac spine and anterior inferior iliac spine (C), distance between posterior superior iliac spine and posterior inferior iliac spine (D), symphysial surface length (E), symphysial surface width (F), ischial tuberosity width (G), ischion-pubis arm thickness (H), coxal bone length (I), distance between the symphysial surface and the most protruding part of the ischial tuberosity (J) were measured with caliper. There was no statistical difference in the comparison of different measurements made on the right and left coxal bone in our study. In correlation studies, between (B) and (A) (r: 0.566), between (I) and (A) (r: 0.595), between (J) and (A) (r: 0.600), between (E) and (J) (r: 0.563) measurements showed a positive correlation relationship. Pacemaker spike detection is an important step in monitoring paced patients. Capacitive ECG facilitates unobtrusive monitoring of subjects during daily routines such as driving. Robust algorithms are required to deal with low signal quality and artifacts, e.g. by employing fusion of multiple signal channels. Due to the low signal-to-noise ratio of the measurement, there are limitations to detection accuracy compared to conventional ECG monitors. Especially low voltage stimulations such as bipolar pacemaker spikes are hard to detect. We present a convolutional network approach to improve on recent signal processing algorithms.We show a realistic evaluation of its performance using leave-one-subject-out cross validation (LOOCV), its dependence on the size of the receptive field, and an estimation of an upper performance bound.

Hard candies produced from sucrose and doctoring agents such as glucose syrup (GS) and high fructose corn syrup (FS) have been investigated in terms of their final composition, glass transition temperature (Tg), degree of crystallinity, total soluble solids (TSS) content and water activity (aw). Time domain (TD) 1H NMR longitudinal relaxation time (T1) and second moment (M2) measurements have been used to understand the glassy state and crystallization characteristics for different hard candy formulations. The investigated candies include sucrose as the main sugar component. Different levels of doctoring agents have been mixed with sucrose to obtain products with different characteristics. It has been shown that addition of any doctoring agent to sucrose formulations decreases the Tg of the system significantly (p≤ 0.05). Furthermore, GS or FS addition also induce significant changes in TSS and aw. T1 and M2 results are almost parallel to each other, both reaching the highest values for the highest sucrose concentration (p≤ 0.05). The results demonstrate that the glass transition and crystallization characteristics of hard candy formulations can be monitored and analyzed by TD NMR relaxometry, alternative to other frequently used conventional methods including differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction.

Makeup water constitutes a key component in the water management of microalgal cultivation systems. However, the effect of makeup water addition on microalgal growth remains largely unexplored. This study compared two deionized water addition intervals (1 day and 4 days) for their effect on the growth of Scenedesmus dimorphus (S. dimorphus hereafter) in 2000 mL Pyrex bottles under controlled conditions. Cell counts and dry algal biomass (DAB) were measured to characterize the microalgal growth rate. Water addition intervals impacted algal cell counts but had little effect on DAB. Adding makeup water every day resulted in a higher growth rate (8.80 ± 1.46 × 105 cells mL−1 day−1; p = 0.22, though) and an earlier occurrence of the peak cell count (day 9) than adding it every 4 days (6.95 ± 1.68 × 105 cells mL−1 day−1 and day 12, respectively). It is speculated that water loss over an extended period and the following makeup water addition posed stress on S. dimorphus. Surpassing the peak cell count, S. dimorphus continued to grow in DAB, resulting in an increased cell weight as a response to nutrient starvation. Optical density at 670 nm (OD670) was also measured. Its correlation with DAB was found to be affected by water addition intervals (R2 = 0.955 for 1 day and 0.794 for 4 days), possibly due to a water loss-induced change in chlorophyll a content. This study is expected to facilitate the makeup water management of photobioreactor and open pond cultivation systems.

Aim: In cancer patients, the overall risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) is increased 7-fold, and in cases of certain malignancies, this risk increases to 28-fold. The main objectives of this study are to describe patterns of use of anticoagulants for the treatment of cancer-related VTE in Turkiye and to assess patient characteristics. Material and Methods: This was a multicenter, retrospective, descriptive study utilizing data from 17 centers across Turkiye. We included 2936 patients with a diagnosis of any cancer and a diagnosis of proximal lower-limb deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and/or pulmonary embolism (PE) between January 1, 2016, and December 31, 2019. These patients were only included if the cancer diagnosis was made at least 6 months before the diagnosis of VTE or within 30 days following the diagnosis of VTE. Patients were followed from the day after the index date until the earliest date among the dates of death, the end of the study, or the end of the 6-month treatment period. Results: The study included 2796 patients with VTE between 2016 and 2019. While 41.4% of the participants were female, 58.6% were male, and 66.1% of the patients had DVT while 45.2% had PE. Furthermore, 52.7% had a history of smoking and only three patients had known hereditary thrombophilia. Lung cancer was the most common type of cancer, diagnosed in 872 patients (29.3%), followed by colon cancer diagnosed in 255 patients (8.6%) and breast cancer diagnosed in 202 patients (6.8%). Among these patients, 70.3% were in an advanced stage of the disease. Chemotherapy was administered to 469 (65.7%) patients at the time of disease onset. Among the patients with VTE, 99.5% were treated, and low-molecular-weight heparin was used in 97.5% of these cases while 3% of the patients were treated with direct oral anticoagulants. Bleeding was observed in 1.6% of the patients who participated in this study, and 39.1% of the bleeding events whose type was specified were categorized as major bleeding. Bleeding was most intense in the gastrointestinal tract (56.7%). Recurrence was observed in 1.5% of the patients and improvement was observed in 42.1%. In the first 6 months after diagnosis, 14.3% of the patients died. Causes of mortality could not be obtained from the patients' records. Conclusion: VTE is common in patients with active cancer and associated with high recurrence and mortality rates. Efforts are needed to prevent VTE, diagnose it in time, and reduce the recurrence rates, especially in the first year after VTE diagnosis. [Turk J Vasc Surg 2023; 32(3.000): 158-65]

Aim: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a relatively common public health problem. In addition to increasing mortality due to complications, it also causes an increase in the cost of the country's economy and loss of labor due to the morbidity it creates. Considering that the recurrence of VTE is a common condition, the importance of this disease for the society increases even more. Although we have come a long way in treatment and follow-up, we see that VTE and its related complications maintain their place as a significant risk factor in the society at increasing rates. Material and Methods: This is an additional analysis of a multicentral, retrospective descriptive study, CAT-TR (Assessment of Patient Characteristic in Cancer Associated Venous Thrombosis in Turkey). The aim of the CAT-TR study was to evaluate patient characteristic and treatment patterns of cancer-induced VTE in Turkey. This article aims to evaluate the incidence and prevalence of cancer-induced VTE in two regions of Turkey between January 01, 2016 and December 31, 2019. Results: In our study, the 4-year prevalence of Deep Venous Thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary Embolism (PE) in Central Anatolia and Marmara was 86.43, 103.56 and 105.68, 98.04 per 100.000 people, respectively. The cumulative incidence of cancer-related VTE in the Central Anatolian and Marmara populations is 17.22 and 6.71 per 100.000 people, respectively. Conclusion: The values we found in the prevalence and incidence study of VTE will be very valuable in terms of being a reference for us in the treatment and prevention of the disease. We believe that this study will shed light on new studies for diseases that may cause VTE in larger populations and strategies to be followed in prevention. [Turk J Vasc Surg 2023; 32(2.000): 66-70]

Algae provide a rich source of proteins, lipids, vitamins, and minerals, making them valuable feed ingredients in animal nutrition. Beyond their nutritional benefits, algae have been recognized for their potential to mitigate the negative environmental impacts of poultry production. Poultry production is crucial for the global food supply but contributes to environmental concerns, particularly in terms of ammonia and carbon dioxide gas emissions. This study emphasizes the importance of reducing greenhouse gas and ammonia production in poultry operations by utilizing algae species suitable for animal consumption, highlighting the need for sustainable feed sources. This study investigated the effects of poultry exhaust air and culture conditions on the amino acid profiles of three microalgae species, namely, Scenedesmus sp. (AQUAMEB-60), Ankistrodesmus sp. (AQUAMEB-33), and Synechococcaceae (AQUAMEB 32). The experiments were conducted in a commercial broiler farm in Bursa, Turkey, focusing on reducing pollutant gas emissions and utilizing poultry exhaust air in algae cultivation. The highest protein content of 50.4% was observed in the biomass of Synechococcaceae with BBM and DI water. Scenedesmus sp. had the highest carbohydrate content of 33.4% cultivated with DI water. The algae biomass produced from Synechococcaceae growth with DI water was found to have the highest content of essential and nonessential amino acids, except for glutamic acid and glycine. The arsenic, cadmium, and mercury content showed variations within the following respective ranges: 1.076–3.500 mg/kg, 0.0127–0.1210 mg/kg, and 0.1330–0.0124 mg/kg. The overall operating costs for producing 1.0 g L−1 d−1 of dry algal biomass with the existing PBR system were $0.12–0.35 L−1 d−1, $0.10–0.26 L−1 d−1, and $0.11–0.24 L−1 d−1 for Scenedesmus sp., Ankistrodesmus sp., and Synechococcaceae, respectively. The operating cost of producing 1.0 g L−1 d−1 of protein was in the range of $0.25–0.88 L−1 d−1 for the three algae species. The results provide insights into the potential of algae as a sustainable feed ingredient in animal diets, emphasizing both environmental and economic considerations. The results demonstrated a considerable reduction in the production costs of dry biomass and protein when utilizing poultry house exhaust air, highlighting the economic viability and nutritional benefits of this cultivation method.

Abstract Background Perforations related to endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) are rare but life-threatening complications. The treatment of Type-II-periampullary perforations that develop during endoscopic sphincterotomy remains a topic of discussion. This study aimed to evaluate the usefulness of fully covered self-expanding metal stenting (FCSEMS) for treating Type-II perforations. Methods The files of all patients who underwent the ERCP procedures between January 2015 and October 2021 were retrospectively reviewed; patients with Stapher Type-II perforation were included in the current study. Patients with FCSEMS were classified into two groups: those who underwent FCSEMS and those who were conventionally followed up. Moreover, patients with FCSEMS were classified into two subgroups: those who underwent simultaneous stenting and those who underwent late stenting. Mortality, surgical intervention, percutaneous drainage, length of hospital stay, and inflammatory markers were all compared between the groups. Results Of the 9253 patients undergoing ERCP during the study period, 28 patients (0.3%) were found to have Type-II perforation. The mean age of these patients was 67.7 ± 3.9 years, and 15 patients were female. FCSEMS was performed on 19 patients, whereas 9 patients were on conventional follow-up. None of the patients developed mortality. In the conventional follow-up group, one patient required percutaneous drainage and one required surgical intervention. In contrast, none of the patients in the FCSEMS group required additional intervention. At a statistically significant level, the length of hospital stay was found to be shorter in the FCSEMS group. There was no difference in inflammatory markers between the two groups. In nine patients, FCSEMS was performed simultaneously, whereas, in ten patients, FCSEMS was performed later because they required a second intervention. These two subgroups did not differ in terms of outcomes. Conclusions FCSEMS is a safe and effective treatment modality for patients with Type-II perforation. Moreover, it can be safely used in patients whose perforations are diagnosed during the ERCP procedure and in patients whose diagnoses are made after the procedure.
