Background: Diagnostic accuracy of endomyocardial biopsy could improve if clinically safe magnetic resonance (MR)-compatible bioptomes were available. We explored two novel MR-compatible cardiac bioptomes for performance, safety, and clinical viability, employing in vivo minipig trials and phase-contrast synchrotron radiation computed microtomography (SRµCT)., Methods: Analysis of ex vivo obtained pig endomyocardial biopsies was performed using phase-contrast SRµCT and conventional two-dimensional histology. The technical performance was evaluated by measuring volume, inner and outer integrities, compression, and histological diagnostic value in 3 sets (6 per set) of biopsies for each experimental bioptome. The bioptomes were tested in vivo in 3 healthy minipigs per bioptome. The clinical feasibility was evaluated by procedural and cutting success as well as histological diagnostic value., Results: The bioptome with the 'grind-grind' design achieved similar values to control in compression (p = 0.822), inner (p = 0.628), and outer (p = 0.507), integrities ex vivo. It showed a better performance in the in vivo real-time MRI setting demonstrating a higher cutting success (91.7%) than the 'grind-anvil' (86.2%) design. In both ex vivo and in vivo evaluations, the 'grind-grind' design displayed sufficient diagnostic value (83% and 95%). The 'grind-anvil' design showed adequate diagnostic value both ex vivo and in vivo (78% and 87.5%) but was not comparable to control according to the three-dimensional (3D) analysis., Conclusion: A novel MR-compatible bioptome was identified as plausible in a clinical setting. Additionally, SRµCT and subsequent 3D structural analysis could be valuable in the label-free investigation of myocardial tissue at a micrometer level., Relevance Statement: Implementation of MR-guided biopsy can improve animal studies on structural myocardial changes at any point in an experimental setup. With further improvements in guiding catheters, MR-guided biopsy, using the new bioptome, has a potential to increase quality and diagnostic accuracy in patients both with structural and inflammatory cardiomyopathies., Key Points: • Novel MR-compatible bioptomes show promise for a clinical application. • SRµCT enabled detailed analysis of endomyocardial biopsies. • The bioptomes showed adequate in vivo performance without major complications., (© 2023. Objectives: Over 40% of adolescents with chronic pain report experiencing pain dismissal, which is a response from another individual that is perceived as diminishing, denying, or disbelieving an individual's report of pain. Pain dismissal by physicians often leaves patients feeling discredited, which may discourage them from seeking and receiving proper treatment for their pain. The purpose of this study was to investigate how the 4 most commonly reported types of physician pain dismissal differentially affect individuals' reactions., Materials and Methods: Emerging adults, age 18- to 25-years old (N=352, 60% female), were randomly assigned to read 1 of 4 vignettes describing patient-provider interactions that included the most commonly reported types of pain dismissal identified by previous research: denial/disbelief, minimizing, faking for secondary gain, and psychogenic. Participants answered questions regarding their reactions to the pain dismissal vignettes., Results: All 4 vignettes were perceived as dismissive and problematic by the majority of participants, but participants who read the psychogenic pain dismissal vignette were less dissatisfied overall with the hypothetical medical appointment than participants who read the other 3 vignettes., Discussion: All 4 types of physician pain dismissal were broadly perceived negatively, suggesting that the experience of pain dismissal is likely not due to patient hypersensitivity but to physician behavior. Discussion of the psychological factors associated with pain was less likely to be perceived as dismissive. Psychologists and physicians should collaborate to develop recommended language that validates patients' experiences of pain, communicates appropriate levels of empathy, and reduces the frequency of perceived physician pain dismissal.

This study examined physician-generated pain dismissal experiences in adolescence between males and females. Young adults (ages 18-24, N = 178) with chronic or recurrent pain reported at least one pain dismissal experience in adolescence and answered a series of questions regarding the experience during this time period. Females were significantly more likely to report pain dismissal and a physician as the dismisser. Males were more likely to report that the dismisser expressed hostility toward them, feeling ambivalent regarding the dismissal experience, and a desire to avoid the dismisser. Females were more likely to report a desire to plead for understanding with the dismisser. Results suggest that female adolescents are more likely to report a pain dismissal experience with physicians, raising concerns that adolescent females may receive, or at least perceive, differential treatment for their chronic pain.

Interface properties of cobalt(II) phthalocyanine (CoPc) and cobalt(II) hexadecafluoro-phthalocyanine (CoPcF16) to gold are investigated by photo-excited electron spectroscopies (X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS) and X-ray excited Auger electron spectroscopy (XAES)). It is shown that a bidirectional charge transfer determines the interface energetics for CoPc and CoPcF16 on Au. Combined XPS and XAES measurements allow for the separation of chemical shifts based on different local charges at the considered atom caused by polarization effects. This facilitates a detailed discussion of energetic shifts of core level spectra. The data allow the discussion of site-specific charge-transfer processes.

The chemical transformation of the polar chloroaluminum phthalocyanine, AlClPc, to μ-(oxo)bis(phthalocyaninato)aluminum(III), (PcAl)2O, in thin films on indium tin oxide is studied and its influence on the molecular orientation is discussed. The studies were conducted using complementary spectroscopic techniques: Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. In addition, density functional theory calculations were performed in order to identify specific vibrations and to monitor the product formation. The thin films of AlClPc were annealed in controlled environmental conditions to obtain (PcAl)2O. It is shown that the chemical transformation in the thin films can proceed only in the presence of water. The influence of the reaction and the annealing on the molecular orientation was studied with Raman spectroscopy and NEXAFS spectroscopy in total electron yield and partial electron yield modes. The comparison of the results obtained from these techniques allows the determination of the molecular orientation of the film as a function of the probing depth.

The influence of graphene interlayers on electronic interface properties of cobalt phthalocyanine on Ni(111) is studied using both photoemission and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. A charge transfer associated with a redistribution of the d-electrons at the Co-atom of the phthalocyanine occurs at the interface to Ni(111). Even a graphene buffer layer cannot prevent the charge transfer at the interface to Ni(111); however, the detailed electronic situation is different.
