Abstract: The nuclear emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the wide-band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS of 27 GeV average neutrino energy from 1994 to 1997. In total about 100000 charged-current neutrino interactions with at least one identified muon were located in the emulsion target and fully reconstructed, using newly developed automated scanning systems. Charmed particles were searched for by a program recognizing particle decays. The observation of the decay in nuclear emulsion makes it possible to select a sample with very low background and minimal kinematical bias. 2013 charged-current interactions with a charmed hadron candidate in the final state were selected and confirmed through visual inspection. The charm production rate induced by neutrinos relative to the charged-current cross-section is measured to be sigma(nu_mu N -> mu- C X)/sigma(CC) = (5.75 +-0.32 stat +-0.30 syst)%. The charm production cross-section as a function of the neutrino energy is also obtained. The results are in good agreement with previous measurements. The charm-quark hadronization produces the following charmed hadrons with relative fractions (in %): f_Dzero = 43.7+-4.5, f_Lambda_c^plus = 19.2+-4.2, f_Dplus = 25.3+-4.2, and f_D_splus = 11.8+-4.7., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: During the years 1994-1997, the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the wide-band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS collecting about 10 6 neutrino interactions. A measurement of ?¯µ-induced charm production is performed by using the presence of a 5% ?¯µ component in the ?µ beam. The measurement takes advantage of the capability to observe the decay topology in the emulsion. The analysis is based on a sample of charged-current interactions with at least one identified muon. About 100000 were located in the emulsion target and fully reconstructed. By requiring a positive muon charge as determined by the CHORUS muon spectrometer, 32?¯µ-induced charm events were observed with an estimated background of 3.2 events. At an average antineutrino energy in the neutrino beam of 18 GeV, the charm production rate induced by antineutrinos is measured to be ?(?¯µN›µ+c¯X)/?(?¯µN›µ+X) =(5.0-0.9+1.4(stat)±0.7(syst))%. The ratio between neutral and charged charm production rates in this process is (2.6-1.0+1.7(stat)±0.8(syst)). The charm production rate as a function of the antineutrino energy is found to be in good agreement with previous results derived from di-lepton data. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Abstract: During the years 1994-97, the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the wide-band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS of 27 GeV average neutrino energy. In total about 100 000 charged-current neutrino interactions were located in the nuclear emulsion target and fully reconstructed. A high-statistics sample of neutrino interactions with a D^0 in the final state was collected. Using the decay mode D*^+ -> D ^0 \pi+ a production cross-section measurement of the D*^+ in neutrino-nucleon charged-current interactions was performed. The low Q-value of the decay was used to isolate a sample of candidate events containing a positive hadron with a small p_T with respect to the D^0 direction. A signal of 22.1 +- 5.5 D*^+ events was obtained. The D*^+ production cross-section relative to the D^0 production cross-section, \sigma(D*^+) / \sigma(D^0), was estimated to be 0.38 +- 0.09(stat) +- 0.05(syst). From this result, the fraction of D^0’s produced via the decay of a D* was deduced to be 0.63 +- 0.17. The D*^+ production cross-section relative to the \nu_\mu charged-current interaction, \sigma(D*^+) / \sigma(CC), was estimated to be [1.02 +-0.25(stat) +- 0.15(syst)]%.

Abstract: A relative measurement of total cross-sections is reported for polyethylene, marble, iron, and lead targets for the inclusive charged-current reaction nu(mu) + N --> mu- + X. The targets, passive blocks of similar to100 kg each, were exposed simultaneously to the CERN SPS wide-band muon-neutrino beam over a period of 18 weeks. Systematic effects due to differences in the neutrino flux and detector efficiency for the different target locations were minimised by changing the position of the four targets on their support about every two weeks. The relative neutrino fluxes on the targets were monitored within the same experiment using charged-current interactions in the calorimeter positioned directly downstream of the four targets. From a fit to the Z/A dependence of the total cross-sections a value is deduced for the effective neutron-to-proton cross-section ratio.

Abstract: The nuclear emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the wide-band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS of 27 GeV average neutrino energy from 1994 to 1997. In total about 100000 charged-current neutrino interactions with at least one identified muon were located in the emulsion target and fully reconstructed, using newly developed automated scanning systems. Charmed particles were searched for by a program recognizing particle decays. The observation of the decay in nuclear emulsion makes it possible to select a sample with very low background and minimal kinematical bias. 2013 charged-current interactions with a charmed hadron candidate in the final state were selected and confirmed through visual inspection. The charm production rate induced by neutrinos relative to the charged-current cross-section is measured to be sigma(nu_mu N -> mu- C X)/sigma(CC) = (5.75 +-0.32 stat +-0.30 syst)%. The charm production cross-section as a function of the neutrino energy is also obtained. The results are in good agreement with previous measurements. The charm-quark hadronization produces the following charmed hadrons with relative fractions (in %): f_Dzero = 43.7+-4.5, f_Lambda_c^plus = 19.2+-4.2, f_Dplus = 25.3+-4.2, and f_D_splus = 11.8+-4.7., 16 pages, 5 figures

8. Detection and reconstruction of short-lived particles produced by neutrino interactions in emulsion

Abstract: In this dissertation, several different topics related to the chorus experiment are pre- sented. The chorus experiment has been used to study neutrino oscillations using the neutrino beam at cern. The neutrino oscillation hypothesis provided an explanation for the lower than expected fluxes of solar and atmospheric neutrinos. There are three neutrino species in nature corresponding to different weak eigenstates, namely, the elec- tron neutrino (νe ), the muon neutrino (νμ ), and the tau neutrino (ντ ). The lower fluxes could be interpreted as spontaneous oscillations between electron and muon neutrinos and between muon and tau neutrinos. The chorus experiment was designed to detect oscillation of muon neutrinos into tau neutrinos with small mixing probability down to 2 · 10−4 and a mass difference square between νμ and ντ larger than 0.5 eV2 . In the last decade, several disappearance experiments have confirmed the neutrino oscillation hypothesis and showed that oscillations occur between mass eigenstates with mass differences of 8 · 10−5 eV2 and 2.5 · 10−3 eV2 . The observed oscillations correspond to almost maximal mixing probability. Current and future efforts focus on detecting the remaining sub-dominant mixing. In the chorus experiment, one looks for the typical decay signature of a τ particle in a large stack of nuclear emulsion plates. Emulsion can record with very high resolution the tracks and decays of short-lived particles, like τ leptons and charmed mesons. A hybrid setup is used consisting of electronic detectors downstream of a 770 kg emulsion target. The electronic detectors consist of an accurate tracking station followed by a hadron spectrometer, a calorimeter, and a muon spectrometer. These detectors are used to measure particle momenta and to select one track per event for scanning the emulsion. Hybrid detectors combined with automated microscopes have greatly increased the amount of emulsion that can be scanned and the information that can be extracted. The fken laboratory in Nagoya developed designated hardware that can find a track with known angle in a 100 μm slice of emulsion. Further upgraded new hardware can find all tracks with slopes within a given angular range. The hardware is used to locate the neutrino vertex by following an electronically measured track from one plate to the next. The new hardware is then used to reconstruct all tracks and vertices of the event. This is done by combining track segments found in the 100 μm upstream layers of the eight plates around the interaction point. The suppression of background in the chorus experiment relies on the measurement of hadron momenta in the hadron spectrometer. A honeycomb drift-tube tracker was added to the detector to improve this measurement. This made it possible to reconstruct independently 3-d track segments in the hadron spectrometer. This improved the uncer- tainty on hadron momenta from ∆p/p = 0.352 + 0.38p/GeV to 0.352 + 0.25p/GeV, where the constant term is due to multiple scattering. The read-out of this detector is based on a continuous sampling of the over–threshold signal of all wires. Because all transitions of a wire’s signal are recorded, both leading edge and pulse length can be recovered. The bit-stream of samples is stored in four phases in separate memory banks. Failure of some memory banks does not destroy the hit information but only lowers its timing accuracy. summary A new automatic emulsion scanning system was developed at cern. For this, new microscope optics with a large field of view were deployed and emulsion scanning was implemented in software. Using software for track finding in emulsion images requires an algorithm capable of handling of the order of 105 3-d hits in a few seconds. An algorithm was developed that searches a network of connected hits. The connection graph links hits in close proximity with a predefined restriction. In this case, the link should possibly be part of a track. This graph is created by sorting the hits in k -dimensional space using a specially designed ordered container with logarithmic search time. The track-finding algorithm considers any connection between two hits as a possible track and builds longer segments using a limited depth-first search of the connection graph. Although originally written for track finding in emulsion, the track-finding algorithm can work in any dimension and is decoupled from the actual hit and track model. The track model and the acceptance of hits in a track are handled by a specific implementation of an abstract acceptance class. The track-finding implementation has been used to find bent tracks in the harp time-projection chamber. In the chorus emulsion application, it has enabled improvements in the vertex location efficiency. It can also be used to reduce human confirmation of secondary vertices by applying it to data taken over the full emulsion thickness. An emulsion-specific algorithm was developed to look for tracks with a known direction. The algorithm is based on moving hits along the track direction and summing the number of hits in its angular acceptance region. Searching for hits in these acceptance regions can be done in logarithmic time using the aforementioned containers. The track-finding algorithm is then used to verify the existence of a track in the small volumes defined by a track-trigger sum over threshold. The k -d space ordering containers have been used throughout the work described in this dissertation, for example in several alignment procedures. The emulsion volume, scanned around the neutrino vertex, defines a decay space for short-lived particles. The maximum decay length is about 4.5 mm along the beam di- rection. In the chorus experiment, 1048 charged-current νμ interactions, identified by a μ− from the primary vertex, with a secondary decay vertex from a D0 meson have been reconstructed. These events were used to study D∗+ resonance production. The decay D∗+ → D0 π + can be identified using the π + momentum measured in the hadron spectrometer and the direction of both the D0 and π + measured in the emulsion. From the observed 22.1 ± 5.5 events, the cross-section ratio for hadronization of a charm quark into D∗+ and D0 is derived: σ (D∗+ ) /σ D0 = 0.38 ± 0.09(stat) ± 0.05(syst). The production cross-section of D∗+ with respect to the total charged-current cross-section is σ (D∗+ ) /σ (CC) = [1.02 ± 0.25(stat) ± 0.15(syst)] %.

Abstract: During the years 1994-97, the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the wide-band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS of 27 GeV average neutrino energy. In total about 100 000 charged-current neutrino interactions were located in the nuclear emulsion target and fully reconstructed. From this sample of events which was based on the data acquired by new automatic scanning systems, 1048 charged-current interactions with a D^0 in the final state were selected by a pattern recognition program and confirmed as neutral-particle decays through visual inspection. The ratio of decay branching fractions of the D^0 into four-charged particles to two charged particles was measured to B(D^0 -> V4) / B(D^0 -> V2) = 0.207+- 0.004. The inclusive measurement of the observed production rate of the D^0 with a decay into four charged prongs in combination with external measurements of this topological branching ratio was used to determine the total D^0 production rate by neutrinos without additional assumption on the branching fractions. The value of this rate relative to the charged-current cross-section was found to be \sigma(D^0) / \sigma(CC) = 0.0269 +- 0.0018 +- 0.0013. In addition, the same normalization method was used to deduce the inclusive topological decay rate into final states with neutral particles only. A value of 0.218 +- 0.049 +- 0.036 was found for this branching fraction. From an observed number of three charged six-prongs events the branching ratio into six charged particles was determined to be (1.2^1.3_-0.9 +- 0.2) x 10^-3. A measurement of the energy dependence of the D^0 production by neutrinos relative to the total charged-current cross-section is also reported. This measurement was used to deduce for m_c, the effective charm-quark mass, a value of (1.42 +- 0.08) GeV/c^2.

Abstract: During the years 1994-1997, the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the wide-band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS. In total about 100 000 charged-current neutrino interactions were located in the nuclear emulsion target and fully reconstructed. From this sample of events which was based on the data acquired by new automatic scanning systems, 1048 D0 events were selected by a pattern recognition program. They were confirmed as neutral-particle decays through visual inspection. Fragmentation properties of deep-inelastic charm production were measured using these events. Distributions of the D0 momentum, Feynman x (xF), z and tan?out, the transverse angle out of the leptonic plane defined by the muon and the neutrino, are presented. The mean value of z was measured to be =0.63±0.03(stat)±0.01(syst). From fits to the z distribution, values for the Peterson parameter ?P=0.108±0.017(stat) ±0.013(syst) and the Collins-Spiller parameter ?CS=0.21-0.04+0. 05(stat)±0.04(syst) are found. For the average value of xF we find =0.38±0.04(stat)±0.03(syst) and for the forward-backward asymmetry A=0.79±0.14(stat)±0.05(syst). Abstract: A measurement of $\Lambda_c^+$ production in neutrino nucleon charged-current interactions is presented. In a sub-sample of about 50 000 interactions located in the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector exposed to the wide band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS, candidates for decays of short lived particles were identified using new automatic scanning systems and later confirmed through visual inspection. Criteria based on the flight length allowed a statistical separation among the different charm species thus enabling a sample particularly rich in $\Lambda_c^+$ to be defined. At an average neutrino energy of $27$ \GeV, the product ${\sigma(\Lambda_c^+)}/{\sigma(CC)} \times BR(\Lambda_c^+ \rightarrow 3p) $ was measured to be $(0.37 \pm 0.10(stat) \pm 0.02(syst) ) \times 10^{-2}$, while the values of $(1.54\pm0.35(stat)\pm0.18(syst) ) \times 10^{-2} $ and of $0.24 \pm 0.07(stat) \pm 0.04(syst)$ were obtained for ${\sigma(\Lambda_c^+)}/{\sigma(CC)}$ and $BR(\Lambda_c^+ \rightarrow 3p)$ respectively.

The search for $\nut$ charged current events has been performed for both leptonic and hadronic decays of the $\tauu$ lepton. No $\tauu$ candidate has been found. A $\numtonut$ mixing is excluded down to $\sin2t$ = $6.8 \times 10^{-4}$ for large $\dm2$ (90\%~C.L.).

Abstract: We report on the first direct observation of a neutrino induced charged-current interaction with two subsequent decays of short-lived particles close to the interaction vertex. This rare double- kink signature in the CHORUS emulsion target is interpreted as a $D_s^{*+}$ production followed by the decay chain $D_s^{*+} \rightarrow D_s^+ \gamma, D_s^+ \rightarrow \tau^+ \nu_\tau ,$ \linebr eak $\tau^+\rightarrow \mu^+\nu_\mu\bar{\nu_\tau}$. The event is characterised by small $Q^2$ and small four-momentum transfer squared $t$ to the target nucleon, which indicates a diffractive pr oduction mechanism. A complete analysis of the event is presented.

Abstract: Part of the neutrino events collected in 1994-1995 by the CHORUS experiment has been analysed. A search was performed for $\nu_{\tau}$ charged current interactions followed by the $\tau$ lepton deca y into a single charged negative hadron, a possible indication for $\numtonut$ oscillation. A sample of 6,844 events without an identified muon has been located in the emulsion target. Within the s election criteria, no $\tau^-$ candidate has been found. Combining this result with the one from the search for $\nu_\tau$ interactions using the muonic decay mode (36,182 events with an identified muon), a 90\% C.L. limit on the mixing angle $\sin2t < 1.8\cdot 10^{-3}$ (at large $\Delta m^2$) has been derived.

Abstract: CHORUS is an experiment searching for $\numtonut$ oscillation in the CERN wide band neutrino beam with a {\sl hybrid} setup consisting of a nuclear emulsion target followed by electronic detectors. The experiment has been taking data from 1994 through 1997. A subset of the neutrino interactions collected in 1994 and 1995 have been analyzed, looking for $\nu_\tau$ charged current interactions where the $\tau$ lepton decays to $\mu \bar{\nu}_\mu\nu_\tau$. In a sample of 31,423 $\num$ charged current interactions, no $\nu_\tau$ candidates were found. For large $\dm2$ values, a limit on the mixing angle of $\sin2t < 3.5 \times 10^{-3}$ at $90\%$ C.L. can be set, thus improving the previous best result.

Abstract: A new experimental apparatus, designed principally for a high sensitivity search for $\nu_{\mu}~\rightarrow~\nu_{\tau}$ oscillation, has been successfully constructed and made operational by the CHORUS Collaboration for the CERN-WA95 experiment. It consists of a large emulsion target, a scintillating fiber tracker system with optoelectronics read-out, an air-core magnet, a set of trigger hodoscopes, a calorimeter based on the lead/scintillating-fiber technique, and a muon spectrometer. The design, construction and performance of the entire apparatus and of the different detectors are described.

Abstract: The CHORUS experiment has successfully finished run I (320~000 recorded \numu\ CC in 94/95) and performed half of run II (225~000 \numu\ CC in 96). The analysis chain was exercised on a small data sample for the muonic \tdecay\ search using for the first time fully automatic emulsion scanning. This pilot analysis, resulting in a limit $\sintth \leq 3 \cdot 10^{-2}$, confirms that the CHORUS proposal sensitivity ($\sintth \leq 3 \cdot 10^{-4}$) is within reach in two years.

Abstract: The final oscillation analysis of the complete set of data collected by CHORUS in the years 1994-1997 is presented. Reconstruction algorithms of data extracted by electronic detectors were improved and the data recorded in the emulsion target were analysed by new automated scanning systems, allowing the use of a new method for event reconstruction in emulsion. CHORUS has applied these new techniques to the sample of 1996-1997 events for which no muons were observed in the electronic detectors. Combining the new sample with the data analysed in previous papers, the overall sensitivity of the experiment to the ?? appearance is thus improved. In a two-neutrino mixing scheme, a 90% C.L. upper limit of sin2 2 ?µ ? < 4.4 × 10-4 is set for large ? m2, improving by a factor 1.5 the previously published CHORUS result. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: In this paper a search for associated charm production both in neutral and charged current $\nu$-nucleus interactions is presented. The improvement of automatic scanning systems in the {CHORUS} experiment allows an efficient search to be performed in emulsion for short-lived particles. Hence a search for rare processes, like the associated charm production, becomes possible through the observation of the double charm-decay topology with a very low background. About 130,000 $\nu$ interactions located in the emulsion target have been analysed. Three events with two charm decays have been observed in the neutral-current sample with an estimated background of 0.18$\pm$0.05. The relative rate of the associated charm cross-section in deep inelastic $\nu$ interactions, $\sigma(c\bar{c}\nu)/\sigma_\mathrm{NC}^\mathrm{DIS}= (3.62^{+2.95}_{-2.42}({stat})\pm 0.54({syst}))\times 10^{-3}$ has been measured. One event with two charm decays has been observed in charged-current $\nu_\mu$ interactions with an estimated background of 0.18$\pm$0.06 and the upper limit on associated charm production in charged-current interactions at 90% C.L. has been found to be $\sigma (c\bar{c} \mu^-)/\sigma_\mathrm{CC} < 9.69 \times 10^{-4}$., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: After completion of the data taking for the ?µ›?? oscillation search, the CHORUS lead-scintillator calorimeter was used in the 1998 run as an active target. High-statistics samples of charged-current interactions were collected in the CERN SPS west area neutrino beam. This beam contained predominantly muon (anti-)neutrinos from sign-selected pions and kaons. We measure the flux and energy spectrum of the incident neutrinos and compare them with beam simulations. The neutrino-nucleon and anti-neutrino-nucleon differential cross-sections are measured in the range 0.01

Abstract: WOS: 000223122600006 This Letter reports on a study of trimuon events induced by neutrino interactions in the CHORUS calorimeter exposed to the CERN SPS wide-band v(mu) beam. Among the multimuon events produced in the calorimeter, 42 mu(-) mu(-) mu(+) events were selected and their kinematical properties investigated. In the past, several groups collected a sample of about one hundred events of this type but their source was largely unknown. Taking advantage of experimental data presently available on the production and muonic branching ratios of light neutral mesons and resonances, we make absolute predictions for the expected rates in our experiment. Detailed Monte Carlo simulations described in this article show that more than half of the trimuon events can be attributed to this source. Muons from pi- and K- decays in charm dimuon events are responsible for an additional approximate to 25% contribution to the total mu(-)mu(-)mu(+) rate. The remaining 25% of events are likely to come from the internal bremsstrahlung of virtual photons into a muon pair. Associated-charm production with subsequent decays of both charmed particles into muons is a negligible source of trimuon events. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: A study of quasi-elastic production of charmed baryons in charged-current interactions of neutrinos with the nuclear emulsion target of CHORUS is presented. In a sample of about 46 000 interactions located in the emulsion, candidates for decays of short-lived particles were identified by using new automatic scanning systems and later confirmed through visual inspection. Criteria based both on the topological and kinematical characteristics of quasi-elastic charm production allowed a clear separation between events of this type and those in which charm is produced in deep inelastic processes. A final sample containing 13 candidates consistent with quasi-elastic production of a charmed baryon with an estimated background of 1.7 events was obtained. At the average neutrino energy of 27 GeV the cross-section for the total quasi-elastic production of charmed baryons relative to the νN charged-current cross-section was measured to be σ(QE)/σ(CC) = (0.23-0.06+0.02(stat)×10-2. Abstract: A measurement of ?c+ production in neutrino nucleon charged-current interactions is presented. In a subsample of about 50 000 interactions located in the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector, exposed to the wide band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS, candidates for decays of short-lived particles were identified using new automatic scanning systems and later confirmed through visual inspection. Criteria based on the flight length allowed a statistical separation among the different charm species thus enabling a sample particularly rich in A+ to be defined. At an average neutrino energy of 27 GeV, the product ?(?c+)/?(CC) × BR(?c+ › 3p) was measured to be (0.37 ± 0.10(stat) ± 0.02(syst)) × 10-2, while the values of (1.54 ± 0.35(stat) ± 0.18(syst)) × 10-2 and of 0.24 ± 0.07(stat) ± 0.04(syst) were obtained for ?(?c+)/?(CC) and BR(?c+ › 3p), respectively. © 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract: We report on a search for associated charm production in neutrino charged-current interactions in the CHORUS experiment, based on the visual observation of charmed-particle decays. The search differs from those carried out so far in which the production of cc has been inferred from measurements of events with two or three muons in the final state, resulting from the decay of charmed hadrons. One event with a double charm-decay topology has been found and a corresponding background of 0.04 events has been evaluated. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. Abstract: During the years 1994-1997, the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the CERN-SPS Wide Band Neutrino Beam. The improvements of the past few years in the automatic emulsion scanning systems allowed a sample of events located in emulsion to be used for studies of charm production. Based on a sample of 56172vμu charged-current interactions analysed so far, we find a value of Bμ = 0.093 ± 0.009(stat.) ± 0.009(syst.) for the semi-leptonic branching fraction of charm hadrons. The result for events with visible energy larger than 30 GeV, Bμ = 0.102 ± 0.016(stat.) ± 0.010(syst.), can be combined with the existing measurements of the dimuon rate to yield a value of 0.219 ± 0.022 for the magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element \Vcd\. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V.
