Synthetic scheme for the preparation of a number of different derivatives of anticancer natural product Psoralidin is described. A convergent synthetic approach is followed using simple starting materials like substituted phenyl acetic esters and benzoic acids. The developed synthetic route leads us to complete the first synthesis of an analogous natural product Lespeflorin I1, a mild melanin synthesis inhibitor. Preliminary bioactivity studies of the synthesized compounds are carried out against two commonly used prostate cancer cell lines. Results show that the bioactivity of the compounds can be manipulated by the simple modification of the functional groups.

A highly efficient and versatile catalytic system for oxidation of primary and secondary aromatic alcohols to carbonyls has been developed. High efficiency, general synthetic applicability, broader functional group tolerance and versatility towards oxidation of both primary and secondary aromatic alcohols are the key features of this green and sustainable protocol. Selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (HMF) to biofuel 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) has been observed in excellent yields. Use of sustainable bio-polymer cellulose as a Cu-nanoparticle support makes the catalytic system environmentally benign.

We report a new alternative ligand and additive free recyclable green heterogeneous catalytic system, Cu-nanoparticles on cellulose template that gives efficient and selective aerobic oxidation of a broad range of benzylic alcohols, cinnamyl alcohols, and heteroaryl alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes under microwave irradiation. Use of green solvent, very short reaction time, and recyclability of the catalyst make this protocol highly advantageous.

A method for N-acetylation of amines has been developed using acetonitrile as an acylating agent and in situ generated trimethylsilyl iodide as the catalyst under microwave heating condition. The reaction is selective toward aromatic amines while aliphatic amines remain intact. The process eliminates the requirement of toxic acylating reagents like acetic anhydride and acetyl chloride.

The deprotection of wide varieties of oximes, imines, and azines to their corresponding carbonyls has been achieved using Cu-nanoparticles on a cellulose template as a reusable catalyst. The reactions were carried out at 80–100 °C using microwave irradiation in water under neutral condition. The catalyst can be reused for several cycles with good to excellent yield.

The starting materials were easily obtained by the condensation of substituted acetic/benzoic acids with 2-(1′-cyclohexenyl)ethyl amine.
