16. Vibration-based structural health monitoring of composite structures

Abstract

Composite materials are in use in several applications, for example, aircraft structural components, because of their light weight and high strength. However the delamination which is one of the serious defects often develops and propagates due to vibration during the service of the structure. The presence of this defect warrants the design life of the structure and the safety. Hence the presence of such defect has to be detected in time to plan the remedial action well in advance. There are a number of methods in the literature for damage detection. They are either 'baseline free/reference free method' or using the data from the healthy structure for damage detection. However very limited vibration-based methods are available in the literature for delamination detection in composite structures. Many of these methods are just simulated studies without experimental validation. Grossly 2 kinds of the approaches have been suggested in the literature, one related to low frequency methods and other high frequency methods. In low frequency approaches, the change in the modal parameters, curvatures, etc. is compared with the healthy structure as the reference, however in the high frequency approaches, excitation of structures at higher modes of the order of few kHz or more needed with distributed sensors to map the deflection for identification of delamination. Use of high frequency methods imposes the limitations on the use of the conventional electromagnetic shaker and vibration sensors, whereas the low frequency methods may not be feasible for practical purpose because it often requires data from the healthy state which may not be available for old structures. Hence the objective of this research is to develop a novel reference-free method which can just use the vibration responses at a few lower modes using a conventional shaker and vibration sensors (accelerometers/laser vibrometers). It is believed that the delaminated layers will interact nonlinearly when excited externally. Hence this mechanism has been utilised in the numerical simulations and the experiments on the healthy and delaminated composite plates. Two methods have been developed here - first method can quickly identify the presence of the delamination when excited at just few lower modes and other method identify the location once the presence of the delamination is confirmed. In the first approach an averaged normalised RMS has been suggested and experimentally validated for this purpose. Latter the vibration data have then been analysed further to identify the location of delamination and its size. Initially, the measured acceleration responses from the composite plates have been differentiated twice to amplify the nonlinear interaction clearly in case of delaminated plate and then kurtosis was calculated at each measured location to identify the delamination location. The method has further been simplified by just using the harmonics in the measured responses to identify the location. The thesis presents the process of the development of the novel methods, details of analysis, observations and results.

20. Object detection mechanism based on deep learning algorithm using embedded IoT devices for smart home appliances control in CoT

Abstract

Object detection and recognition is commonly used in diverse computer vision based applications and many algorithms are proposed in literature. However, application of object detection algorithms in real-time systems demand minimal computation time and comprehensive performance analysis needs to be conducted before deployment. This paper aims to conduct performance analysis of deep learning based algorithm i.e. single shot detector (SSD) in IoT based embedded devices for smart home appliances control. We have developed a smart home automation system using object detection algorithm based on model view controller (MVC) architecture deployed on Cloud of Things (CoT) i.e. Amazon Web Service (AWS) cloud for users to remotely monitor their homes. Message queuing telemetry transport (MQTT) protocol is used for communication with connected IoT devices. For load-balancing, we have proposed the concept of distributed broker to support high number of publishers and subscribers. For experimental analysis, we have connected a camera with Raspberry Pi for object detection based on deep learning algorithm (SSD) using OpenCV library in our proposed system. Experiments are conducted to evaluate the performance of object detection algorithm under varying environmental conditions by changing the light intensity level, distance of object from camera, and frame size of video. Results show that communication delay is very low (i.e. 0.2 s) as compared to processing delay in Raspberry Pi. Furthermore, changing environmental conditions have very low/insignificant impact on the processing delay of object detection algorithm i.e. average delay of 1.7 s (stdev. 0.18) and 1.8 s (stdev. 0.24) in bright and dark lighting levels, respectively. However, accuracy is deteriorated under low lighting intensity level and increased frame sizes i.e. from 95–100 to 80–85%. Selected embedded device, camera model and object detection algorithm limits the performance of object detection in real-time systems and shall be carefully selected to fulfill the requirement.

Abstract

Gastrointestinal (GI) parasites are common across the globe, particularly in underdeveloped and developing countries. The incidence of these parasites is high in semi-urban and rural settings. Giardia and Cryptosporidium are two main intestinal parasites that infect humans and domestic and wild animals. Dogs and cats play an important role as reservoir hosts in transmitting these parasites to other hosts. There is a lack of published information on molecular research in Pakistan that examines the incidence of these parasites in cats and dogs and associated risk factors. Using a simple random sampling procedure, 384 fecal samples were obtained from cats and dogs in four towns in the District of Faisalabad (as defined by an epidemiological sample size calculation algorithm). Data on the related risk variables of GI protozoal infections were acquired using a pre-designed questionnaire with closed-ended questions. Centrifugal flotation was used to extract parasitic oocysts from feces. From isolated parasite oocysts, DNA was extracted. Genus-specific primers (18S rRNA gene) were used for PCR analysis. Giardia spp. was found to be present in 35 of the total samples, with a prevalence rate of 9.11%, while Cryptosporidium spp. was found to be present in 15 of the total samples, with a prevalence rate of 3.91%. Lyallpur town has the greatest frequency of Giardia spp., 12.22% followed by Iqbal town 10.11%, Madina town 8.42%, and Jinnah town 6.36%. Similarly, Lyallpur town has the greatest incidence of Cryptosporidium spp., followed by Jinnah town, Iqbal town, and Madina town (5.56, 3.64, 3.37, and 3.16%, respectively). Animals less than a year old had considerably (P=0.005) greater rates of infection with the abovementioned parasites. In the research area, stray dogs were more likely to have the infection as compared to stray cats. In conclusion, in order to stop the spread of these zoonotic diseases, adequate preventative measures are required. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

31. Lifetime estimation and orientation effect based on long-term degradation analysis of thermoset and thermoplastic insulators

Abstract

Polymeric insulators have replaced ceramic insulators due to their obvious properties like low surface energy, which exhibits good hydrophobic performance, low weight, etc. However, electric utilities have concerns about their long-term performance. In that context, the long-term performance of two different types of polymeric insulators are investigated in this study: thermoset Silicone rubber (SiR) and thermoplastic elastomeric (TPE). Multi-stress aging was performed in the different orientations of both types of polymeric insulators. During multi-stress aging, insulators are exposed to varied loads in both vertical and horizontal orientations, simulating actual service environmental conditions. Experiments were done in a chamber where different types of stresses were simulated, which resembles the weathering conditions of Hattar, Pakistan, which is one of the most polluted industrial zones. Both insulators were stressed in a chamber under the designed weathering conditions for two years and six months at different orientations. Polymeric insulators made of SiR perform better in the vertical position than that in the horizontal position. Furthermore, the experimental results show that both materials are capable in a variety of situations. SiR, on the other hand, performed well due to its high hydrophobicity, which means it is less impacted by contaminants and hence has a longer life and higher service performance than TPE.
