Search

Clusters of galaxies are at the intersection of cosmic filaments and are still accreting galaxies and groups along these preferential directions, but, because of their relatively low contrast on the sky, they are difficult to detect (unless a large amount of spectroscopic data are available), and unambiguous detections have been limited until now to relatively low redshifts (z<0.3). We searched for extensions and filaments around the thirty clusters of the DAFT/FADA survey (redshift range 0.4

Based on a recent photometric redshift galaxy catalogue, we have searched for galaxy clusters in the Stripe~82 region of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey by applying the Adami & MAzure Cluster FInder (AMACFI). Extensive tests were made to fine-tune the AMACFI parameters and make the cluster detection as reliable as possible. The same method was applied to the Millennium simulation to estimate our detection efficiency and the approximate masses of the detected clusters. Considering all the cluster galaxies (i.e. within a 1 Mpc radius of the cluster to which they belong and with a photoz differing by less than 0.05 from that of the cluster), we stacked clusters in various redshift bins to derive colour-magnitude diagrams and galaxy luminosity functions (GLFs). For each galaxy with absolute magnitude brighter than -19.0 in the r band, we computed the disk and spheroid components by applying SExtractor, and by stacking clusters we determined how the disk-to-spheroid flux ratio varies with cluster redshift and mass. We detected 3663 clusters in the redshift range 0.15

A likely tidal disruption of a star by the intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) of a dwarf galaxy was recently identified in association with Abell 1795. Without deep spectroscopy for this very faint object, however, the possibility of a more massive background galaxy or even a disk-instability flare from a weak AGN could not be dismissed. We have now obtained 8 hours of Gemini spectroscopy which unambiguously demonstrate that the host galaxy is indeed an extremely low-mass $(M_\ast\sim 3\times 10^8\; {\rm M}_{\odot})$ galaxy in Abell 1795, comparable to the least-massive galaxies determined to host IMBHs via other studies. We find that the spectrum is consistent with the X-ray flare being due to a tidal disruption event rather than an AGN flare. We also set improved limits on the black hole mass $({\rm log}[M_{\bullet}/{\rm M}_{\odot}] \sim 5.3 - 5.7)$ and infer a 15-year X-ray variability of a factor of $> 10^4$. The confirmation of this galaxy-black hole system provides a glimpse into a population of galaxies that is otherwise difficult to study, due to the galaxies' low masses and intrinsic faintness, but which may be important contributors to the tidal disruption rate., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures. This document summarizes the results of a community-based discussion of the potential science impact of the Mayall+BigBOSS highly multiplexed multi-object spectroscopic capability. The KPNO Mayall 4m telescope equipped with the DOE- and internationally-funded BigBOSS spectrograph offers one of the most cost-efficient ways of accomplishing many of the pressing scientific goals identified for this decade by the "New Worlds, New Horizons" report. The BigBOSS Key Project will place unprecedented constraints on cosmological parameters related to the expansion history of the universe. With the addition of an open (publicly funded) community access component, the scientific impact of BigBOSS can be extended to many important astrophysical questions related to the origin and evolution of galaxies, stars, and the IGM. Massive spectroscopy is the critical missing ingredient in numerous ongoing and planned ground- and space-based surveys, and BigBOSS is unique in its ability to provide this to the US community. BigBOSS data from community-led projects will play a vital role in the education and training of students and in maintaining US leadership in these fields of astrophysics. We urge the NSF-AST division to support community science with the BigBOSS multi-object spectrograph through the period of the BigBOSS survey in order to ensure public access to the extraordinary spectroscopic capability., Comment: 5 pages; this white paper was produced as input to the NSF-AST portfolio review

Detailed temperature and abundance radial profile maps have revealed a significant lack of homogeneity within the Perseus Galaxy cluster. Previous surveys of Perseus with the Suzaku telescope, which has a worse angular resolution and less light collecting area than XMM-Newton, revealed over-densities of X-Ray emission. These results provide evidence that the baryon fraction exceeds the universal average, which we had initially hoped to study. We have yet to confirm or deny the existence of clumping in these regions, which could explain such over-abundance of X-Ray emission. This project offers a framework of efficient, automated processing techniques to "clean" images of noise from the mechanics of the telescope, background radiation from local sources such as the solar wind, and more distant sources such as background AGN. The galaxy cluster studied in this project contains high levels of contamination due to its line-of-sight position close to the dust- and star-filled arms of the Milky Way galaxy. Rigorous spectral model fitting of the cluster employ multiple parameters dedicated to accounting for these contaminations. The framework created from this analysis technique will provide the opportunity to expand this analysis to any nearby galaxy cluster, such as the Virgo, Coma, and Ophiuchus Clusters. Cluster faint low surface brightness galaxies (fLSBs) are difficult to observe. Consequently, their origin, physical properties and number density are not well known. After a first search for fLSBs in the highly substructured Coma cluster, we present here a search for fLSBs in Abell 496. This cluster appears to be much more relaxed than Coma, but is embedded in a large scale filament of galaxies. Our aim is to compare the properties of fLSBs in these two very different clusters, to search for environmental effects. Based on deep CFHT/Megacam images in the u*, g', r' and i' bands, we selected galaxies with r'>21 and surface brightness > 24 mag/arcsec-2. We estimated photometric redshifts for all these galaxies and kept the 142 fLSBs with photo-z<0.2. In a g'-i' versus i' color-magnitude diagram, we find that a large part of these fLSBs follow the red sequence (RS) of brighter galaxies. The fLSBs within +-1sigma of the RS show a homogeneous spatial distribution, while those above the RS appear to be concentrated along the large scale filament of galaxies. These properties are interpreted as agreeing with the idea that RS fLSBs are formed in groups prior to cluster assembly. Theory suggests that a star making a close passage by a supermassive black hole at the center of a galaxy can under most circumstances be expected to emit a giant flare of radiation as it is disrupted and a portion of the resulting stream of shock-heated stellar debris falls back onto the black hole itself. We examine the first results of an ongoing archival survey of galaxy clusters using Chandra and XMM-selected data, and report a likely tidal disruption flare from SDSS J131122.15-012345.6 in Abell 1689. The flare is observed to vary by a factor of >30 over at least 2 years, to have maximum L_X(0.3-3.0 keV)> 5 x 10^{42} erg s^{-1} and to emit as a blackbody with kT~0.12 keV. From the galaxy population as determined by existing studies of the cluster, we estimate a tidal disruption rate of 1.2 x 10^{-4} galaxy^{-1} year^{-1} if we assume a contribution to the observable rate from galaxies whose range of luminosities corresponds to a central black hole mass (M_bh) between 10^6 and 10^8 M_sun., Comment: 24 pages, including 6 figures and 2 tables Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Due to observational constraints, dark matter determinations in nearby clusters based on weak lensing are still extremely rare, in spite of their importance for the determination of cluster properties independent of other methods. We present a weak lensing study of the Coma cluster (redshift 0.024) based on deep images obtained at the CFHT. After obtaining photometric redshifts for the galaxies in our field based on deep images in the u (1x1 deg2), and in the B, V, R and I bands (42'x52'), allowing us to eliminate foreground galaxies, we apply weak lensing calculations on shape measurements performed in the u image. We derive a map of the mass distribution in Coma, as well as the radial shear profile, and the mass and concentration parameter at various radii. We obtain M_200c = 5.1+4.3-2.1 x10^14 Msun and c_200c=5.0+3.2-2.5, in good agreement with previous measurements. With deep wide field images it is now possible to analyze nearby clusters with weak lensing techniques, thus opening a broad new field of investigation.

We report results from an X-ray study of the Abell 2111 galaxy cluster using the Advanced Satellite for Astrophysics and Cosmology ASCA and the ROSAT Position Sensitive Proportional Counter (PSPC). By correcting for the energy-dependent point-spread function of the ASCA instruments, we have examined the temperature structure of the cluster. The cluster's core within 3' is found to have a temperature of 6.46+-0.87 keV, significantly higher than 3.10+-1.19 keV in the surrounding region of r = 3 - 6'. This radially decreasing temperature structure can be parameterized by a polytropic index of $\gamma$ $\simeq$ 1.45. The X-ray morphology of the cluster appears elongated and clumpy on scales $\le$1'. These results, together with earlier {\it ROSAT} and optical studies which revealed that the X-ray centroid and ellipticity of A2111 shift with spatial scale, are consistent with the hypothesis that the cluster is a dynamically young system. Most likely, the cluster has recently undergone a merger, which may also be responsible for the high fraction of blue galaxies observed in the cluster. Alternatively, the temperature structure may also be due to the gravitational potential of the cluster. We have further measured the emission weighted abundance of the X-ray-emitting intracluster medium as 0.25$\pm$0.14 solar. This value is similar to those of nearby clusters which do not show a large blue galaxy fraction, indicating that star formation in disk galaxies and subsequent loss to the medium do not drastically alter the average abundance of a cluster. Based on ROSAT PSPC pointed observations, we have determined the aggregate X-ray shapes of 10 distant (z = 0.17-0.54) rich clusters: A2397, A222, A520, A1689, A223B, A1758, A2218, A2111, A2125, and CL0016+16. Four of the clusters have global X-ray ellipticities greater than 0.2, as measured on a scale of diameter 3 h_{50}^{-1} Mpc. These strongly elongated clusters tend to show substantial amounts of substructure, indicating that they are dynamically young systems. Most interestingly, the global X-ray ellipticities of the clusters correlate well with their blue galaxy fractions; the correlation coefficient is 0.75 with a 90% confidence range of 0.44-0.92. This correlation suggests that blue cluster galaxies originate in the process of cluster formation, and that the blue galaxy proportion of a cluster decreases as the intracluster medium relaxes onto equipotential surfaces., Comment: Submitted to ApJL, 9 pages including 2 figures

We present ROSAT PSPC and HRI observations of A2111, the richest galaxy cluster photometrically surveyed by Butcher & Oemler (1984). The cluster contains a distinct comet-shaped X-ray subcomponent, which appears hotter than the rest of the cluster. The galaxy and X-ray surface brightness distributions of the cluster show a similarly elongated morphology. These results suggest that the cluster is undergoing a head-on subcluster merger. This merger may also be responsible for the high fraction of gas-rich blue galaxies observed in the cluster. The future of x-ray astronomy depends upon development of x-ray telescopes with larger aperture areas (>1 sq m) and finer angular resolution(<1).Combined with the special requirements of nested grazing incidence optics, the mass and envelope constraints of spaceborne telescopes render such advances technologically challenging. Achieving this goal will require precision fabrication, alignment, mounting, and assembly of large areas (>100 sq m) of lightweight (1 kg/sq m areal density) high quality mirrors-possibly entailing active (in-space adjustable) alignment and figure correction. This paper discusses relevant programmatic and technological issues and summarizes progress toward large area sub-arcsecond x-ray telescopes. The future of x-ray astronomy relies upon the development of x-ray telescopes with larger aperture areas (greater than 1 m2) and finer angular resolution (less than 1.). Combined with the special requirements of grazing-incidence optics, the mass and envelope constraints of space-borne telescopes render such advances technologically challenging.requiring precision fabrication, alignment, and assembly of large areas (greater than 100 m2) of lightweight (approximately 1 kg m2 areal density) mirrors. Achieving precise and stable alignment and figure control may entail active (in-space adjustable) x-ray optics. This paper discusses relevant programmatic and technological issues and summarizes progress toward active x-ray telescopes.

Electroform/plasma-spray laminates have shown promise as lightweight, strong, low-thermal-expansion components for xray optics. The basic idea is to exploit both (1) the well-established art of fabrication of optical components by replication and (2) plasma spraying as a means of reinforcing a thin replica optic with one or more backing layer(s) having tailorable thermomechanical properties. In x-ray optics as in other applications, replication reduces the time and cost of fabrication because grinding and polishing can be limited to a few thick masters, from which many lightweight replicas can thereafter be made. The first step in the fabrication of a component of the type in question is to make a replica optic by electroforming a thin layer of nickel on a master. Through proper control of the electroforming process conditions, it is possible to minimize residual stress and, hence, to minimize distortion in the replica. Next, a powder comprising ceramic particles coated with a metal compatible with the electroformed nickel is plasma-sprayed onto the backside of the nickel replica. Then through several repetitions and variations of the preceding steps or perhaps a small compressive stress, alternating layers of electroformed nickel and plasma-sprayed metal-coated ceramic powder are deposited. The thicknesses of the layers and the composition of the metal-coated ceramic powder are chosen to optimize the strength, areal mass density, and toughness of the finished component. An important benefit of using both electroforming and plasma spraying is the possibility of balancing stresses to a minimum level, which could be zero or perhaps a small net compressive stress designed to enhance the function of the component in its intended application.

An engineered structure is proposed that can alleviate quasi-particle recombination losses via the existence of a phononic band gap that overlaps the 2-Delta energy of phonons produced during recombination of quasi-particles. Attention is given to a 1D Kronig-Penny model for phonons normally incident to the layers of a multilayered superconducting tunnel junction as an idealized example. A device with a high density of Bragg resonances is identified as desirable; both Nb/Si and NbN/SiN superlattices have been produced, with the latter having generally superior performance.

The fabrication and testing of electroformed replica Wolter I optics made from gold-coated lacquered mandrels are discussed. Also discussed is the testing of gold- and palladium-coated lacquered test flats. X-ray (5 keV for Wolter I mirror and 8-40 keV for test flats) and optical (NCP-1000 profiler) measurements were used to evaluate the mirrors.

This paper covers the various techniques that are currently being used and developed to fabricate grazing incidence X-ray optics for the energy range from about 0.2 to 20 keV. Techniques covered will include diamond turning, thin foils, epoxy/carbon-fiber replication, electroforming replication, and float glass/Kirkpatrick-Baez techniques.
