Emergence is a fundamental concept in biology and other disciplines, but whether emergent phenotypes evolve similarly to nonemergent phenotypes is unclear. The hypothesized process of emergent evolution posits that evolutionary change in at least some collective behaviors will differ from evolutionary change in the corresponding intrinsic behaviors of isolated individuals. As a result, collective behavior might evolve more rapidly and diversify more between populations compared to individual behavior. To test whether collective behavior evolves emergently, we conducted a large comparative study using 22 ant species and gathered over 1,500 behavioral rhythm time series from hundreds of colonies and isolated individuals, totaling over 1.5 y of behavioral data. We show that analogous traits measured at individual and collective levels exhibit distinct evolutionary patterns. The estimated rates of phenotypic evolution for the rhythmicity of activity in ant colonies were faster than the evolutionary rates of the same behavior measured in isolated individual ants, and total variation across species in collective behavior was higher than variation in individual behavior. We hypothesize that more rapid evolution and higher variation is a widespread feature of emergent phenotypes relative to lower-level phenotypes across complex biological systems. Objectives Healthy age-related cognitive changes are highly heterogeneous across individuals. This variability is increasingly explained through the lens of spontaneous fluctuations of brain activity, now considered a powerful index of age-related changes. However, brain activity is a biological process modulated by circadian rhythms, and how these fluctuations evolve throughout the day is under investigation. Methods We analyzed data from 101 healthy late middle-aged participants from the Cognitive Fitness in Aging study (68 women and 33 men; aged 50–69 years). Participants completed 5 electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings of spontaneous resting-state activity on the same day. We used weighted phase-lag index (wPLI) analyses as an index of the functional synchrony between brain regions couplings, and we computed daily global PLI fluctuation rates of the 5 recordings to assess the association with cognitive performance and β-amyloid and tau/neuroinflammation pathological markers. Results We found that theta and gamma daily fluctuations in the salience-control executive internetwork (SN-CEN) are associated with distinct mechanisms underlying cognitive heterogeneity in aging. Higher levels of SN-CEN theta daily fluctuations appear to be deleterious for memory performance and were associated with higher tau/neuroinflammation rates. In contrast, higher levels of gamma daily fluctuations are positively associated with executive performance and were associated with lower rate of β-amyloid deposition. Discussion Thus, accounting for daily EEG fluctuations of brain activity contributes to a better understanding of subtle brain changes underlying individuals' cognitive performance in healthy aging. It has been found that the intraday dynamics of body temperature in small mammal and bird species on the adjacent day are similar. Therefore, by focusing on the body temperature dynamics of the previous day, it is possible to predict with a high degree of accuracy the periods of increase and decrease in body temperature for the current day. This phenomenon was observed when animals were kept under natural illumination and under artificial illumination when the phase of the intrinsic circadian rhythm shifted by 1-2 h every day. When analyzing this phenomenon in birds, it has been shown that the best match for body temperature dynamics occurs when comparing adjacent days based on sidereal days (a period of 23 h and 56 min). Over time, after several days, the daily patterns of body temperature fluctuation take on a completely different form and frequency. These facts suggest a connection between ultradian rhythms and the rotation of the Earth around its axis, and consequently, the position of animals on the surface of the planet relative to space objects. Continuous body temperature is a rich source of information on hormonal status, biological rhythms, and metabolism, all of which undergo stereotyped change across adolescence. Due to the direct actions of these dynamic systems on body temperature regulation, continuous temperature may be uniquely suited to monitoring adolescent development and the impacts of exogenous reproductive hormones or peptides (e.g., hormonal contraception, puberty blockers, gender affirming hormone treatment). This mini-review outlines how traditional methods for monitoring the timing and tempo of puberty may be augmented by markers derived from continuous body temperature. These features may provide greater temporal precision, scalability, and reduce reliance on self-report, particularly in females. Continuous body temperature data can now be gathered with ease across a variety of wearable form factors, providing the opportunity to develop tools that aid in individual, parental, clinical, and researcher awareness and education.

Association was assessed between the data harvested by a long-baseline laser interference deformograph and the dynamics of body temperature (BT) in hamsters deprived of natural daily light-darkness changes. The power spectral data revealed the positive correlation between simultaneous time series of hamster BT and the Earth's crust deformation (ECD). The superposed epoch analysis established an association between abrupt upstrokes of hamster BT and ECD increments. Thus, the direct relationships between BT dynamics (reflecting predominance of sympathetic part of autonomic nervous system) and ECD (according to long-baseline laser interference deformography) were established. The study observed synchronization of the free-running circadian rhythm of hamster BT with the tidal stress in Earth's lithosphere. IntroductionDuring sleep periods, most mammals alternate multiple times between rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep and non-REM (NREM) sleep. A common theory proposes that these transitions are governed by an “hourglass-like” homeostatic need to enter REM sleep that accumulates during the inter-REM interval and partially discharges during REM sleep. However, markers or mechanisms for REM homeostatic pressure remain undetermined. Recently, an analysis of sleep in mice demonstrated that the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the amount of NREM sleep between REM bouts correlates with REM bout duration, suggesting that time in NREM sleep influences REM sleep need. Here, we build on those results and construct a predictive measure for the propensity to enter REM sleep as a function of time in NREM sleep since the previous REM episode.MethodsThe REM propensity measure is precisely defined as the probability to enter REM sleep before the accumulation of an additional pre-specified amount of NREM sleep.ResultsAnalyzing spontaneous sleep in mice, we find that, as NREM sleep accumulates between REM bouts, the REM propensity exhibits a peak value and then decays to zero with further NREM accumulation. We show that the REM propensity at REM onset predicts features of the subsequent REM bout under certain conditions. Specifically, during the light phase and for REM propensities occurring before the peak in propensity, the REM propensity at REM onset is correlated with REM bout duration, and with the probability of the occurrence of a short REM cycle called a sequential REM cycle. Further, we also find that proportionally more REM sleep occurs during sequential REM cycles, supporting a correlation between high values of our REM propensity measure and high REM sleep need.DiscussionThese results support the theory that a homeostatic need to enter REM sleep accrues during NREM sleep, but only for a limited range of NREM sleep accumulation.

Environmental rhythms such as the daily light-dark cycle selected for endogenous clocks. These clocks predict regular environmental changes and provide the basis for well-timed adaptive homeostasis in physiology and behavior of organisms. Endogenous clocks are oscillators that are based on positive feedforward and negative feedback loops. They generate stable rhythms even under constant conditions. Since even weak interactions between oscillators allow for autonomous synchronization, coupling/synchronization of oscillators provides the basis of self-organized physiological timing. Amongst the most thoroughly researched clocks are the endogenous circadian clock neurons in mammals and insects. They comprise nuclear clockworks of transcriptional/translational feedback loops (TTFL) that generate ~24 h rhythms in clock gene expression entrained to the environmental day-night cycle. It is generally assumed that this TTFL clockwork drives all circadian oscillations within and between clock cells, being the basis of any circadian rhythm in physiology and behavior of organisms. Instead of the current gene-based hierarchical clock model we provide here a systems view of timing. We suggest that a coupled system of autonomous TTFL and posttranslational feedback loop (PTFL) oscillators/clocks that run at multiple timescales governs adaptive, dynamic homeostasis of physiology and behavior. We focus on mammalian and insect neurons as endogenous oscillators at multiple timescales. We suggest that neuronal plasma membrane-associated signalosomes constitute specific autonomous PTFL clocks that generate localized but interlinked oscillations of membrane potential and intracellular messengers with specific endogenous frequencies. In each clock neuron multiscale interactions of TTFL and PTFL oscillators/clocks form a temporally structured oscillatory network with a common complex frequency-band comprising superimposed multiscale oscillations. Coupling between oscillator/clock neurons provides the next level of complexity of an oscillatory network. This systemic dynamic network of molecular and cellular oscillators/clocks is suggested to form the basis of any physiological homeostasis that cycles through dynamic homeostatic setpoints with a characteristic frequency-band as hallmark. We propose that mechanisms of homeostatic plasticity maintain the stability of these dynamic setpoints, whereas Hebbian plasticity enables switching between setpoints via coupling factors, like biogenic amines and/or neuropeptides. Simultaneous observations of radioactivity fluctuations from the natural isotope 40K were carried out in Moscow and Ulyanovsk. It was found that the changes in the counting rate from sources in these geographical points were not simultaneous, but were synchronized according to local solar time. Based on this observation and considering that radioactivity fluctuations correlated with body temperature rhythms, a method for short-term prediction of ultradian rhythms of animal activity has been developed and confirmed. An analysis of the consistency of the dynamics of the intensity of decay fluctuations and daily growth rates of an L-929 cell culture was also carried out. It was found that the highest correlation coefficient was recorded when the indicator of proliferative activity of the culture was compared with the intensity of decay fluctuations taken over the previous day. Thus, based on data on fluctuations in the radioactive decay of 40K, which are an indicator of the biotropic factor of the environment, it is possible to make short-term forecasts of ultradian and infradian biological rhythms. Synchronization is a conspicuous form of collective behaviour that is of crucial importance in numerous biological systems. Ant colonies from the genera Leptothorax and Temnothorax form small colonies, typically made up of only a few hundred workers, and exhibit a form of synchronized behaviour where workers inside colonies' nests become active together in rhythmic cycles that have a period of approximately 20–200 min. However, it is not currently known if these synchronized rhythms of locomotion confer any functional benefit to colonies. By using a combination of multiple image analysis techniques, we show that inactive Leptothorax ants can act as immobile obstacles to moving ants, and that synchronized activity has the potential to reduce the likelihood that individual ants will encounter regions of immobile obstacles that impede access to portions of the nest. In a long-term (8 months) study, we examined the degree of synchronization of ultradian body temperature oscillations of two isolated groups of mice kept under constant dim illumination. In most cases, the periods of increased activity accompanied by rapid elevation of body temperature coincided in these groups of mice, but in some days, no significant synchronization between the examined parameters was observed. Analysis of the effects of environmental factors on the degree of synchronization of ultradian rhythms in mice revealed association of this parameter with the dynamics of atmospheric pressure (AtmP) and to a lesser extent with the vertical component of interplanetary magnetic field Bz. The loss in synchronicity of ultradian rhythms of mouse activity occurred after a rapid drop of AtmP or during pronounced negative Bz. The study monitored the long-term body temperature (BT) oscillations of C57BL/6 mice and outbred starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) to compare them with fluctuation in decay rate of radioactive natural 40K isotope. The spectrum analysis revealed simultaneous changes of the predominant periods in BT spectra of the animals and those in fluctuation in 40K decay rate. A positive correlation was established between BT dynamics and fluctuation in decay rate. The superposed epoch analysis revealed predominant coincidence of the moments of BT and fluctuation in 40K decay rate. The concentration of biomolecules in living systems shows numerous systematic and random variations. Systematic variations can be classified based on the frequency of variations as ultradian (<24 h), circadian (approximately 24 h), and infradian (>24 h), which are partly predictable. Random biological variations are known as between-subject biological variations that are the variations among the set points of an analyte from different individuals and within-subject biological variation, which is the variation of the analyte around individuals' set points. The random biological variation cannot be predicted but can be estimated using appropriate measurement and statistical procedures. Physiological rhythms and random biological variation of the analytes could be considered the essential elements of predictive, preventive, and particularly personalized laboratory medicine. This systematic review aims to summarize research that have been done about the types of physiological rhythms, biological variations, and their effects on laboratory tests. We have searched the PubMed and Web of Science databases for biological variation and physiological rhythm articles in English without time restrictions with the terms "Biological variation, Within-subject biological variation, Between-subject biological variation, Physiological rhythms, Ultradian rhythms, Circadian rhythm, Infradian rhythms". It was concluded that, for effective management of predicting, preventing, and personalizing medicine, which is based on the safe and valid interpretation of patients' laboratory test results, both physiological rhythms and biological variation of the measurands should be considered simultaneously. Body temperature rhythms of C57Bl/6 laboratory mice and common greenfinches (Chloris chloris) and feeding periods of common starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) were compared with the intensity of fluctuations in 40К radioactive decay. Body temperature changes in greenfinches and mice were found to positively correlate with the intensity of fluctuations in 40K radioactive decay. Superposed epoch analysis showed that an increase in mouse body temperature, which reflects the start of the active phase in the sleep–wake cycle, and food intake in starlings coincide with an increase in the intensity of 40K radioactive decay. Thus, animal activity in the ultradian range of periods may be related to external quasi-rhythmic physical influences, rather than being determined only by endogenous processes. Circadian rhythms provide daily temporal structure to cellular and organismal biological processes, ranging from gene expression to cognition. Higher-frequency (intradaily) ultradian rhythms are similarly ubiquitous but have garnered far less empirical study, in part because of the properties that define them—multimodal periods, non-stationarity, circadian harmonics, and diurnal modulation–pose challenges to their accurate and precise quantification. Wavelet analyses are ideally suited to address these challenges, but wavelet-based measurement of ultradian rhythms has remained largely idiographic. Here, we describe novel analytical approaches, based on discrete and continuous wavelet transforms, which permit quantification of rhythmic power distribution across a broad ultradian spectrum, as well as precise identification of period within empirically determined ultradian bands. Moreover, the aggregation of normalized wavelet matrices allows group-level analyses of experimental treatments, thereby circumventing limitations of idiographic approaches. The accuracy and precision of these wavelet analyses were validated using in silico and in vivo models with known ultradian features. Experiments in male and female mice yielded robust and repeatable measures of ultradian period and power in home cage locomotor activity, confirming and extending reports of ultradian rhythm modulation by sex, gonadal hormones, and circadian entrainment. Seasonal changes in day length modulated ultradian period and power, and exerted opposite effects in the light and dark phases of the 24 h day, underscoring the importance of evaluating ultradian rhythms with attention to circadian phase. Sex differences in ultradian rhythms were more prominent at night and depended on gonadal hormones in male mice. Thus, relatively straightforward modifications to the wavelet procedure allowed quantification of ultradian rhythms with appropriate time-frequency resolution, generating accurate, and repeatable measures of period and power which are suitable for group-level analyses. Ultradian rhythms in metabolism and physiology have been described previously in mammals. However, the underlying mechanisms for these rhythms are still elusive. Here, we report the discovery of temperature-sensitive ultradian rhythms in mammalian fibroblasts that are independent of both the cell cycle and the circadian clock. The period in each culture is stable over time but varies in different cultures (ranging from 3 to 24 h). We show that transient, single-cell metabolic pulses are synchronized into stable ultradian rhythms across contacting cells in culture by gap junction–mediated coupling. Coordinated rhythms are also apparent for other metabolic and physiological measures, including plasma membrane potential (Δψp), intracellular glutamine, α-ketoglutarate, intracellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP), cytosolic pH, and intracellular calcium. Moreover, these ultradian rhythms require extracellular glutamine, several different ion channels, and the suppression of mitochondrial ATP synthase by α-ketoglutarate, which provides a key feedback mechanism. Abstract Background Circadian clocks allow organisms to anticipate daily fluctuations in their environment by driving rhythms in physiology and behavior. Inter-organismal differences in daily rhythms, called chronotypes, exist and can shift with age. In ants, age, caste-related behavior and chronotype appear to be linked. Brood-tending nurse ants are usually younger individuals and show “around-the-clock” activity. With age or in the absence of brood, nurses transition into foraging ants that show daily rhythms in activity. Ants can adaptively shift between these behavioral castes and caste-associated chronotypes depending on social context. We investigated how changes in daily gene expression could be contributing to such behavioral plasticity in Camponotus floridanus carpenter ants by combining time-course behavioral assays and RNA-Sequencing of forager and nurse brains. Results We found that nurse brains have three times fewer 24 h oscillating genes than foragers. However, several hundred genes that oscillated every 24 h in forager brains showed robust 8 h oscillations in nurses, including the core clock genes Period and Shaggy. These differentially rhythmic genes consisted of several components of the circadian entrainment and output pathway, including genes said to be involved in regulating insect locomotory behavior. We also found that Vitellogenin, known to regulate division of labor in social insects, showed robust 24 h oscillations in nurse brains but not in foragers. Finally, we found significant overlap between genes differentially expressed between the two ant castes and genes that show ultradian rhythms in daily expression. Conclusion This study provides a first look at the chronobiological differences in gene expression between forager and nurse ant brains. This endeavor allowed us to identify a putative molecular mechanism underlying plastic timekeeping: several components of the ant circadian clock and its output can seemingly oscillate at different harmonics of the circadian rhythm. We propose that such chronobiological plasticity has evolved to allow for distinct regulatory networks that underlie behavioral castes, while supporting swift caste transitions in response to colony demands. Behavioral division of labor is common among social insects. The links between chronobiological and behavioral plasticity that we found in C. floridanus, thus, likely represent a more general phenomenon that warrants further investigation.

The chemical composition of mollusk shells is a useful tool in (paleo)climatology since it captures inter- and intra-annual variability in environmental conditions. Trace element and stable isotope analyses with improved sampling resolution now enable the use of mollusk shells for paleoenvironmental reconstructions at a daily to sub-daily resolution. Here, we discuss hourly resolved Mg/Ca, Mn/Ca, Sr/Ca and Ba/Ca profiles measured by laser ablation ICP-MS through shells of photosymbiotic giant clams (Tridacna maxima , Tridacna squamosa and Tridacna squamosina) and the non-photosymbiotic scallop Pecten maximus. Precise sclerochronological age models and spectral analysis allowed us to extract daily and tidal rhythms in the trace element composition of these shells. We find significant expression of these periodicities but conclude that this cyclicity explains less than 10 % of the sub-annual variance in trace element profiles. Tidal and diurnal rhythms explain variability of at most 0.2 mmol/mol (~10 % of mean value) in Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca, while Mn/Ca and Ba/Ca cyclicity has a median amplitude of less than 2 µmol/mol (~40 % and 80 % of the mean of Mn/Ca and Ba/Ca, respectively). Daily periodicity in Sr/Ca and Ba/Ca is stronger in Tridacna than in Pecten , with Pecten showing stronger tidal periodicity. One T. squamosa specimen which grew under a sunshade exhibits some of the strongest diurnal cyclicity. Daily cycles in trace element composition of giant clams are therefore unlikely to be driven by variations in direct insolation itself but reflect an inherent biological rhythmic process affecting element incorporation. Finally, the large amount of trace element variability unexplained by periodic variability highlights the dominance of aperiodic processes in mollusk physiology and/or environmental conditions on shell composition at the sub-daily scale. Future studies should aim to investigate whether part of this aperiodic variability in shell chemistry reliably records weather patterns or circulation changes in the paleoenvironment. Circadian rhythms are internal processes repeating approximately every 24 hours in living organisms. The dominant circadian pacemaker is synchronized to the environmental light-dark cycle. Other circadian pacemakers, which can have noncanonical circadian mechanisms, are revealed by arousing stimuli, such as scheduled feeding, palatable meals and running wheel access, or methamphetamine administration. Organisms also have ultradian rhythms, which have periods shorter than circadian rhythms. However, the biological mechanism, origin, and functional significance of ultradian rhythms are not well-elucidated. The dominant circadian rhythm often masks ultradian rhythms; therefore, we disabled the canonical circadian clock of mice by knocking out Per1/2/3 genes, where Per1 and Per2 are essential components of the mammalian light-sensitive circadian mechanism. Furthermore, we recorded wheel-running activity every minute under constant darkness for 272 days. We then investigated rhythmic components in the absence of external influences, applying unique multiscale time-resolved methods to analyze the oscillatory dynamics with time-varying frequencies. We found four rhythmic components with periods of ∼17 h, ∼8 h, ∼4 h, and ∼20 min. When the ∼17-h rhythm was prominent, the ∼8-h rhythm was of low amplitude. This phenomenon occurred periodically approximately every 2-3 weeks. We found that the ∼4-h and ∼20-min rhythms were harmonics of the ∼8-h rhythm. Coupling analysis of the ridge-extracted instantaneous frequencies revealed strong and stable phase coupling from the slower oscillations (∼17, ∼8, and ∼4 h) to the faster oscillations (∼20 min), and weak and less stable phase coupling in the reverse direction and between the slower oscillations. Together, this study elucidated the relationship between the oscillators in the absence of the canonical circadian clock, which is critical for understanding their functional significance. The study collated oscillations of body temperature of С57BL/6 mice and Roborovski hamsters (Phodopus roborovskii) in the period range of 100-240 min and fluctuations of the secondary cosmic rays reflected by neutron count rate of a neutron monitor at the Earth's surface. Cross-correlation of body temperature and neutron count rate data revealed their strong association only for simultaneous measurements. Collation of the phase of neutron count rate fluctuations with maxima of body temperature oscillations revealed the coincidence of the phases of both processes. There was a temporary connection between the periods of body temperature elevation and neutron count rate rise. Thus, not only the spectral parameters of biological and physical processes, but also their phases coincided, which corroborates the hypothesis on stimulating effect of increasing neutron count rate on activity of the animals. Work in recent years has provided strong evidence for the modulation of memory function and neuroplasticity mechanisms across circadian (daily), ultradian (shorter-than-daily), and infradian (longer-than-daily) timescales. Despite rapid progress, however, the field has yet to adopt a general framework to describe the overarching role of biological rhythms in memory. To this end, Iyer and colleagues introduced the term iterative metaplasticity, which they define as the "gating of receptivity to subsequent signals that repeats on a cyclic timebase." The central concept is that the cyclic regulation of molecules involved in neuroplasticity may produce cycles in neuroplastic capacity—that is, the ability of neural cells to undergo activity-dependent change. Although Iyer and colleagues focus on the circadian timescale, we think their framework may be useful for understanding how biological rhythms influence memory more broadly. In this review, we provide examples and terminology to explain how the idea of iterative metaplasticity can be readily applied across circadian, ultradian, and infradian timescales. We suggest that iterative metaplasticity may not only support the temporal niching of neuroplasticity processes but also serve an essential role in the maintenance of memory function. Introduction: During sleep periods, most mammals alternate multiple times between rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep and non-REM (NREM) sleep. A common theory proposes that these transitions are governed by an "hourglass-like" homeostatic need to enter REM sleep that accumulates during the inter-REM interval and partially discharges during REM sleep. However, markers or mechanisms for REM homeostatic pressure remain undetermined. Recently, an analysis of sleep in mice demonstrated that the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the amount of NREM sleep between REM bouts correlates with REM bout duration, suggesting that time in NREM sleep influences REM sleep need. Here, we build on those results and construct a predictive measure for the propensity to enter REM sleep as a function of time in NREM sleep since the previous REM episode., Methods: The REM propensity measure is precisely defined as the probability to enter REM sleep before the accumulation of an additional pre-specified amount of NREM sleep., Results: Analyzing spontaneous sleep in mice, we find that, as NREM sleep accumulates between REM bouts, the REM propensity exhibits a peak value and then decays to zero with further NREM accumulation. We show that the REM propensity at REM onset predicts features of the subsequent REM bout under certain conditions. Specifically, during the light phase and for REM propensities occurring before the peak in propensity, the REM propensity at REM onset is correlated with REM bout duration, and with the probability of the occurrence of a short REM cycle called a sequential REM cycle. Background: Circadian clocks allow organisms to anticipate daily fluctuations in their environment by driving rhythms in physiology and behavior. Inter-organismal differences in daily rhythms, called chronotypes, exist and can shift with age. In ants, age, caste-related behavior and chronotype appear to be linked. Brood-tending nurse ants are usually younger individuals and show "around-the-clock" activity. With age or in the absence of brood, nurses transition into foraging ants that show daily rhythms in activity. Ants can adaptively shift between these behavioral castes and caste-associated chronotypes depending on social context. We investigated how changes in daily gene expression could be contributing to such behavioral plasticity in Camponotus floridanus carpenter ants by combining time-course behavioral assays and RNA-Sequencing of forager and nurse brains. Results: We found that nurse brains have three times fewer 24 h oscillating genes than foragers. However, several hundred genes that oscillated every 24 h in forager brains showed robust 8 h oscillations in nurses, including the core clock genes Period and Shaggy. These differentially rhythmic genes consisted of several components of the circadian entrainment and output pathway, including genes said to be involved in regulating insect locomotory behavior. We also found that Vitellogenin, known to regulate division of labor in social insects, showed robust 24 h oscillations in nurse brains but not in foragers. Finally, we found significant overlap between genes differentially expressed between the two ant castes and genes that show ultradian rhythms in daily expression. Conclusion: This study provides a first look at the chronobiological differences in gene expression between forager and nurse ant brains. This endeavor allowed us to identify a putative molecular mechanism underlying plastic timekeeping: several components of the ant circadian clock and its output can seemingly oscillate at different harmonics of the circadian rhythm. We propose that such chronobiological plasticity has evolved to allow for distinct regulatory networks that underlie behavioral castes, while supporting swift caste transitions in response to colony demands. Behavioral division of labor is common among social insects. The links between chronobiological and behavioral plasticity that we found in C. floridanus, thus, likely represent a more general phenomenon that warrants further investigation. The study examined association between oscillations of body temperature of laboratory Wistar rats maintained under constant illumination with the amplitude of fluctuations of secondary cosmic rays reported by neutron count rate provided by neutron monitors and geomagnetic undulations. In contrast to geomagnetic undulations, neutron count rate variations and body temperature oscillations in rats assessed by spectrum analysis of the corresponding step functions at 1-min intervals demonstrated almost permanent variations with the periods ranging from 100 to 400 min. Under conditions of constant illumination inducing changes in the period of circadian rhythm and predominance of the ultradian rhythms, an association between neutron count rate fluctuations and body temperature oscillations was observed perpetually during the day- and nighttime. The study examined the rhythmic oscillations of body temperature with the period ranging 100-400 min in three groups of laboratory mice maintained under persistent artificial illumination in Moscow and Ulyanovsk. The difference in the moments of sunrise or sunset in these towns is about 1 h. The greatest rhythmic oscillations of body temperature in examined mice had the periods of 100-400 min. The phase analysis of 100-200-min rhythms revealed their synchronicity with local but not universal time despite the mice had no photic signs indicating alternation of day and night. Of them, the most pronounced were the rhythms with the periods of 121, 143, 151, and 186 min. The effect of circadian rhythm (CR) disruption on immune function depends on the method by which CRs are disrupted. Behavioral and thermoregulatory responses induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) treatment were assessed in female Siberian hamsters in which circadian locomotor activity (LMA) rhythms were eliminated by exposure to a disruptive phase-shifting protocol (DPS) that sustains arrhythmicity even when hamsters are housed in a light-dark cycle. This noninvasive treatment avoids genome manipulations and neurological damage associated with other models of CR disruption. Circadian rhythmic (RHYTH) and arrhythmic (ARR) hamsters housed in a 16L:8D photocycle were injected with bacterial LPS near the onset of the light (zeitgeber time 1; ZT1) or dark (ZT16) phase. LPS injections at ZT16 and ZT1 elicited febrile responses in both RHYTH and ARR hamsters, but the effect was attenuated in the arrhythmic females. In ZT16, LPS inhibited LMA in the dark phase immediately after injection but not on subsequent nights in both chronotypes; in contrast, LPS at ZT1 elicited more enduring (~4 day) locomotor hypoactivity in ARR than in RHYTH hamsters. Power and period of dark-phase ultradian rhythms (URs) in LMA and Tb were markedly altered by LPS treatment, as was the power in the circadian waveform. Disrupted circadian rhythms in this model system attenuated responses to LPS in a trait- and ZT-specific manner; changes in UR period and power are novel components of the acute-phase response to infection that may affect energy conservation.

The study examined the effect of passive magnetic shielding on the magnitude of rhythmic oscillations of body temperature (BT) with 4-20 min periods in mice and their correlation with similar oscillations in unshielded control group. A magnetic permalloy screen that 35-fold attenuates the total geomagnetic field and decreased the undulations of magnetic field with the periods of few minutes by 5 times, produced no effect on the mean amplitude of BT oscillations within the same period range, their spectral power, and the cross-spectral density of examined rhythms in comparison with the control (unshielded) mice. Thus, either the mice possess a very sensitive magnetic sensory system or there exists an external non-magnetic factor affecting rhythmicity of BT. Voles are small herbivorous rodents that can display both circadian activity rhythms (~24-h periodicity) and ultradian activity rhythms (~1- to 6-h periodicity). Ultradian rhythms are observed on an individual level, but also in synchronized populations. Ultradian rhythm period has been suggested to be influenced by energy balance, but the underlying mechanisms of ultradian rhythmicity are poorly understood. We manipulated energy balance by implementing the "work-for-food" paradigm, in which small rodents are exposed to increasing levels of food scarcity at different ambient temperatures in the laboratory. Photoperiodical spring-programmed voles on high workload changed their nocturnal circadian activity and body temperature rhythm to ultradian patterns, indicating that a negative energy balance induces ultradian rhythmicity. This interpretation was confirmed by the observation that ultradian patterns arose earlier at low temperatures. Interestingly, a positive relationship between ultradian period length and workload was observed in tundra voles. Spectral analysis revealed that the power of ultradian rhythmicity increased at high workload, whereas the circadian component of running wheel activity decreased. This study shows that the balance between circadian and ultradian rhythmicity is determined by energy balance, confirming flexible circadian and ultradian rhythms in females and males of 2 different vole species: the common vole (Microtus arvalis) and the tundra vole (Microtus oeconomus). The study examined the changes in intraperitoneal body temperature of laboratory mice, Jungar hamsters, European greenfinch Chloris chloris, and starlings. In a few minutes range, these changes significantly correlated not only between the animals of the same species, but also between the different classes such as birds and mammals, which were isolated from each other and maintained under different illumination regimen. This phenomenon indicates some external influence(s) on the central mechanisms of the thermal control system not related to illumination regiment. In 80% cases, the phases of most pronounced rhythms of body temperature oscillating with the periods of 8-9 and 12-13 min coincided with those of geomagnetic field within the accuracy of ±1 min. However, the amplitude of body temperature oscillations did not depend on the amplitude of geomagnetic field (GMF) oscillations. Synchronicity of the changes in body temperature and GMF was observed at the amplitude of GMF oscillation of 0.4 nT, which is extremely low value. Previously, in male Greenfinch, we have described ultradian rhythms of body temperature with periods of 3–6, 8–10, 12–20, and 40–60 min. There are individual variations in this rhythmicity. Rhythms with a period of 3–7 min are more characteristic of some males but not for the others. These males had small values of the ratio of the harmonic spectral density in the range of 12–20 min to the harmonic spectral density in the range of 3–7 min. In this study, we hypothesized that ultradian rhythmicity of body temperature fluctuations is related to the nervous system activity in general and to temperament in particular. We have conducted two sets of experiments for estimating the aggression level (n = 12 males) and reaction to novelty (n = 17). Individuals with predominant rhythms with a period of 3–7 min are less aggressive and more slowly adapt to new conditions. We have discovered a new 4 h ultradian rhythm that occurs during the interphase of the cell cycle in a wide range of individual mammalian cells, including both primary and transformed cells. The rhythm was detected by holographic lens-free microscopy that follows the histories of the dry mass of thousands of single live cells simultaneously, each at a resolution of five minutes. It was vital that the rhythm was observed in inherently heterogeneous cell populations, thus eliminating synchronization and labeling bias. The rhythm is independent of circadian rhythm, and is temperature-compensated. We show that the amplitude of the fundamental frequency provides a way to quantify the effects of, chemical reagents on cells, thus shedding light on its mechanism. The rhythm is suppressed by proteostasis disruptors and is detected only in proliferating cells, suggesting that it represents a massive degradation and re-synthesis of protein every 4 h in growing cells. The study analyzed the dynamics of intraperitoneal body temperature in C57BL/6 mice during 39 days of uninterrupted measurements. When mice were exposed to constant illumination, the ultradian oscillations of body temperature demonstrated the rhythms with periods of 2 h, 60 min, and 12 min, which were the higher harmonics of the circadian temperature oscillations. In two mutually isolated groups exposed to constant illumination, the phases of revealed biorhythms coincided. When the mice maintained under natural illumination, the body temperature demonstrated the ultradian rhythms with the same periods, which indicated that constant illumination did not distort the parameters of ultradian biorhythms. The dynamics of body temperature was used to determine the food intake synchronization in starlings located at a distance of 105 km from each other. Thermal accumulators were implanted intraperitoneally to the birds; the birds had free access to food or were kept under the conditions of food deprivation. It was found that food intake moments significantly more often coincided with an accuracy of up to a minute even in the birds separated by a considerable distance. The difference in time of sunrise of a few minutes, as well as the conditions of constant lighting did not affect the synchronism of food intake. On the basis of the data obtained, it can be assumed that there is a certain external factor, probably of an electromagnetic nature, which synchronizes the functional activity of the body, including food intake. The aim of the study was to identify ultradian (intraday) and infradian (multi-day) rhythms in the dynamics of testosterone concentration in the blood serum of white-breasted hedgehogs. Blood sampling was performed from the femoral veins of 12 male hedgehogs. We found ultradian rhythms of testosterone on both sampling dates—March 7–8 (a day length of 11 hours and 15 minutes) and May 10–11 (a day length of 16 hours). An 8-hour rhythm of testosterone concentration has been established. The acrophases were at the same times in both photoperiods and thus independent of sunset times. The study of the infradian rhythms of testosterone was daily carried out on May 22—June 3, at 07:40 to 08:50 and from June 27 to July 7, at 16:15–16:50. It revealed an infradian rhythm of the testosterone concentration with a period of 4-days in both the morning and the evening sampling. According to our previous investigation, the infradian rhythms of testosterone among individual hedgehogs, rodents and primates have the same period. That indicates the common mechanisms for their formation. In case of experimental studies, the phase of ultradian and infradian biorhythms will need to be taken into account because the testosterone concentration in acrophase is 2–4 times higher than in bathyphase. Sleep is controlled by two processes-a circadian clock that regulates its timing and a homeostat that regulates the drive to sleep. Drosophila has been an insightful model for understanding both processes. For four decades, Borbély and Daan's two-process model has provided a powerful framework for understanding sleep regulation. However, the field of fly sleep has not employed such a model as a framework for the investigation of sleep. To this end, we have adapted the two-process model to the fly and established its utility by showing that it can provide empirically testable predictions regarding the circadian and homeostatic control of fly sleep. We show that the ultradian rhythms previously reported for loss-of-function clock mutants in the fly are robustly detectable and a predictable consequence of a functional sleep homeostat in the absence of a functioning circadian system. We find that a model in which the circadian clock speed and homeostatic rates act without influencing each other provides imprecise predictions regarding how clock speed influences the strength of sleep rhythms and the amount of daily sleep. We also find that quantitatively good fits between empirical values and model predictions were achieved only when clock speeds were positively correlated with rates of decay of sleep pressure. Our results indicate that longer sleep bouts better reflect the homeostatic process than the current definition of sleep as any inactivity lasting 5 minutes or more. The rhythms of short-term arousal episodes, associated with normalization of low body temperature, were studied in hibernating Erinaceus roumanicus. The episodes of body temperature recovery during hibernation were 1.7 times more incident during the acrophase of 4.058-day rhythm of glucocorticoid hormones, detected previously, than during the batiphase of this rhythm. Ultradian rhythm of arousal episodes conformed to a 4-h biorhythm: the maximum number of body temperature resumption episodes was recorded at 00.00-01.00, 04.00-05.00, 08.00-09.00, 12.00-13.00, 16.00-17.00, and 20.00-21.00. These data indicated that in mammals the mechanisms of infradian and ultradian rhythm maintenance were stable and did not depend on body temperature or were determined by external factors with periods of 4.058 days and 4 h. Sustained oscillations are frequently observed in biological systems consisting of a negative feedback loop, but a mathematical model with two ordinary differential equations (ODE) that has a negative feedback loop structure fails to produce sustained oscillations. Only when a time delay is introduced into the system by expanding to a three-ODE model, transforming to a two-delay differential equations (DDE) model, or introducing a bistable trigger do stable oscillations present themselves. In this study, we propose another mechanism for producing sustained oscillations based on periodic reaction pauses of chemical reactions in a negative feedback system. We model the oscillatory system behavior by allowing the coefficients in the two-ODE model to be periodic functions of time—called pulsate functions—to account for reactions with go-stop pulses. We find that replacing coefficients in the two-ODE system with pulsate functions with microscale (several seconds) pauses can produce stable system-wide oscillations that have periods of approximately 1 to several hours long. We also compare our two-ODE and three-ODE models with the two-DDE, three-ODE, and three-DDE models without the pulsate functions. Our numerical experiments suggest that sustained long oscillations in biological systems with a negative feedback loop may be an intrinsic property arising from the slow diffusion-based pulsate behavior of biochemical reactions. Abstract Use of the push-pull superfusing technique has shown that in the brain the release rates of endogenous catecholamines, GABA, glutamate and histamine are not constant but fluctuate temporally according to ultradian rhythms. Rhythmic fluctuations have been found in the posterior and anterior hypothalamus, the locus coeruleus, the nucleus of the solitary tract, the mammillary body and the medial amygdaloid nucleus of cats and rats. Similar fluctuations appear in the nitric oxide signal registered in the nucleus accumbens, as well as in the power of delta and theta waves of the EEG in the posterior hypothalamus. The EEG rhythmic fluctuations are generated in the arcuate nucleus because they disappear after its electrocoagulation. The frequency of the EEG fluctuations is increased, decreased or even abolished when catecholamine or histamine receptor agonists and antagonists are centrally applied showing that the EEG ultradian rhythm is controlled by catecholaminergic and histaminergic neurons. Moreover, the rhythmic fluctuations of delta and theta waves corelate negatively with those of histamine in the rat posterior hypothalamus. Environmental cycles on Earth display different periodicities, including daily, tidal or annual time scales. Virtually all living organisms have developed temporal mechanisms to adapt to such changes in environmental conditions. These biological timing structures—ranging from microsecond to seasonal timing—may have intrinsic properties and even different clock machinery. However, interaction among these temporal systems may present evolutionary advantages, for example, when species are exposed to changing climatic conditions or different geographic locations. Here, we present and discuss a model that accounts for the circadian regulation of both ultradian (less than 24-h) and infradian (more than 24-h) cycles and for the interaction among the three time scales. We show two clear examples of such interaction: (i) between the circadian clock and the seasonal regulation of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Thyroid (HPT) axis; and (ii) between the circadian clock and the hypothalamic-nigrostriatal (HNS) ultradian modulation. This remarkable interplay among the otherwise considered isolated rhythms has been demonstrated to exist in diverse organisms, suggesting an adaptive advantage of multiple scales of biological timing.
