The aim of this study was thus to examine VTE prevalence and factors associated with VTE in depressed inpatients.Patients and Methods: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study of consecutive depressed inpatients (n = 94) from January 1, 2018, to June 30, 2019, at the psychiatry department of Akita University Hospital. As part of our clinical routine, depressed inpatients were screened for VTE using D-dimer, and patients who screened positive underwent enhanced CT to examine VTE. A variety of data was extracted from medical records, including, amongst others, age, sex, body mass index, diagnoses of psychiatric disorders, total scores on the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, duration of current depressive episode, daily dosages of antidepressants and antipsychotics, catatonia, and physical restraint.Results: VTE was detected in 8.5% of depressed inpatients. There were no significant differences between VTE-positive and VTE-negative inpatients regarding any of the considered factors.Conclusion: Our analysis shows a VTE prevalence of 8.5% in depressed inpatients, higher than that of 2.3% reported in a previous study in hospitalized patients with psychiatric disorders including depression. 4. A methodology of quantifying membrane permeability based on returning probability theory and molecular dynamics simulation

Abstract

We propose a theoretical approach to estimate the permeability coefficient of substrates (permeants) for crossing membranes from donor (D) phase to acceptor (A) phase by means of molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. A fundamental aspect of our approach involves reformulating the returning probability (RP) theory, a rigorous bimolecular reaction theory, to describe permeation phenomena. This reformulation relies on the parallelism between permeation and bimolecular reaction processes. In the present method, the permeability coefficient is represented in terms of the thermodynamic and kinetic quantities for the reactive (R) phase that exists within the inner region of membranes. One can evaluate these quantities using multiple MD trajectories starting from phase R. We apply the RP theory to the permeation of ethanol and methylamine at different concentrations (infinitely dilute and 1 mol% conditions of permeants). Under the 1 mol% condition, the present method yields a larger permeability coefficient for ethanol ($0.12 \pm 0.01 ~\mathrm{cm~s^{-1}}$) than for methylamine ($0.069\pm 0.006~\mathrm{cm~s^{-1}}$), while the values of the permeability coefficient are satisfactorily close to those obtained from the brute-force MD simulations [$0.18\pm 0.03 ~\mathrm{cm~s^{-1}}$ and $0.052 \pm 0.005 ~\mathrm{cm~s^{-1}}$ for ethanol and methylamine, respectively]. Abstract

Cholesterol (Chol) plays a crucial role in shaping the intricate physicochemical attributes of biomembranes, exerting considerable influence on water molecules proximal to the membrane interface. In this study, we conducted molecular dynamics simulations on the bilayers of two lipid species, dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and palmitoyl sphingomyelin (PSM); they are distinct with respect to the structures of the hydrogen-bond (H-bond) acceptors. Our investigation focuses on the dynamic properties and H-bonds of water molecules in the lipid-membrane systems, with particular emphasis on the influence of Chol at varying temperatures. Notably, in the gel phase at 303 K, the presence of Chol extends the lifetimes of H-bonds of the oxygen atoms acting as H-bond acceptors within DPPC with water molecules by a factor of 1.5 to 2.5. In the liquid-crystalline phase at 323 K, on the other hand, H-bonding dynamics with lipid membranes remain largely unaffected by Chol. Abstract

High-speed atomic force microscopy (HS-AFM) is an indispensable technique in the biological field owing to its excellent imaging capability for the real-time observation of biomolecules with high spatial resolution. Furthermore, recent developments have established a tip-scan stand-alone HS-AFM that can be combined with an optical microscope, drastically improving its versatility for studying various complex phenomena. Although HS-AFM has mainly been used in biology, it has considerable potential to contribute to various research fields. One of the great candidates is a photoactive material, such as an azo-polymer, which plays a vital role in multiple optical applications because of its unique nanoscale motion under light irradiation. In this study, we demonstrate the in-situ real-time observation of nanoscale azo-polymer motion by combining tip-scan HS-AFM with an optical system, allowing HS-AFM observations precisely aligned with a tightly focused laser position. We successfully observed the dynamic evolution of unique morphologies in azo-polymer films, attributed to photoinduced nano-movements. Moreover, real-time topographic line profile analyses facilitated precise and quantitative investigations of morphological changes, which provided novel insights into the deformation mechanism. This significant demonstration would pave the way for the application of HS-AFM in wide research fields, from biology to material science and physical chemistry.

Abstract

Waste cigarette filter (WCF) is one of the most common wastes found in the environment. Cigarette filters contain up to 96% cellulose acetate (CA), which can be used as a material for membrane fabrication. However, the CA-based membrane from WCF posed a weak mechanical property (brittle). Therefore, the objective of this work is to improve mechanical property of CA-based membrane from WCF by preparing blend membranes with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) polymer and evaluate their performance for filtration of real river water containing high natural organic matter (NOM) concentrations. The variations of WCF and PVDF used were 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75, and 0:100. The membranes were then characterized to determine the morphology, pore size and pore size distribution, hydrophilicity, mechanical properties, and filtration performance of the membrane using clean water and river water. The SEM test results showed the presence of spherulites on the surface of the blend membrane, indicating that crystallization occurred during membrane formation. The spherulites resulted in smaller pore size, narrower pore size distribution, higher hydrophilicity, and mechanical properties. Meanwhile, the filtration test results showed that blend membranes produced higher permeability compared to pristine WCF, PVDF, and commercial-based CA membranes, where the result of river water permeability was in the range of 875–1062.5 L/m2.h.bar. The membrane fouling formation was aligned well with the result of permeability and is dominated by irreversible fouling formation from the dynamic cake layer built on the membrane surface, with NOM rejections of 26.6–33.8%, suggesting the need for further developments.

19. Nanoscale optical switching of photochromic material by ultraviolet and visible plasmon nanofocusing

Abstract

Optical control of electronic properties is essential for future electric devices. Manipulating such properties has been limited to the microscale in spatial volume due to the wave nature of light; however, scaling down the volume is in extremely high demand. In this study, we demonstrate optical switching within a nanometric spatial volume in an organic electric material. Photochromic materials such as diarylethene derivatives exhibit semiconducting and insulating properties on ultraviolet (UV) and visible light, respectively, which are promising for optical switching and memory. To control the wavelength between visible and UV light at the nanoscale, we employed plasmon nanofocusing, which allows the creation of a nanolight source at the apex of a metallic tapered structure over a broad frequency range by focusing of propagating plasmons. We utilized an aluminum tapered structure and realized in-situ wavelength control between visible and UV light at the nanoscale. Using this method, nanoscale optical switching between the two states of diarylethene was demonstrated. The switching performance was confirmed for at least nine cycles without degradation. This demonstration would make a significant step forward toward next-generation nanoscale optoelectronic devices and stimulate diverse scientific fields owing to the unique concept of broadband plasmon nanofocusing.

Abstract

A 50-year-old man with von Hippel–Lindau disease underwent cryoablation (CRA) for two adjacent renal cell carcinomas in the upper pole of his right kidney. Although computed tomography (CT) immediately after CRA revealed involvement of part of the liver parenchyma in the ice-ball, the treatment was completed without complications. Contrast-enhanced CT on day 2 post-CRA revealed a thrombus in the portal vein of segment 6 near the ablated liver parenchyma, prompting the initiation of oral anticoagulation. The patient was discharged on day 4 after CRA without any sequelae, and a follow-up contrast-enhanced CT done 6 weeks later demonstrated resolution of the portal vein thrombus.

Abstract

Peritoneal dissemination of cancer affects patient survival. The behavior of peritoneal mesothelial cells (PMCs) and immune cells influences the establishment of a microenvironment that promotes cancer cell metastasis in the peritoneum. Here, we investigated the roles of lactosylceramide alpha‐2,3‐sialyltransferase (ST3G5; also known as ST3GAL5 and GM3 synthase) in the exosome‐mediated premetastatic niche in peritoneal milky spots (MSs). Exosomes secreted from ST3G5high cancer cells (ST3G5high‐cExos) were found to contain high levels of hypoxia‐inducible factor 1‐alpha (HIF1α) and accumulated in MSs via uptake in macrophages (MΦs) owing to increased expression of sialic acid‐binding Ig‐like lectin 1 (CD169; also known as SIGLEC1). ST3G5high‐cExos induced pro‐inflammatory cytokines and glucose metabolic changes in MΦs, and the interaction of these MΦs with PMCs promoted mesothelial–mesenchymal transition (MMT) in PMCs, thereby generating αSMA+ myofibroblasts. ST3G5high‐cExos also increased the expression of immune checkpoint molecules and T‐cell exhaustion in MSs, which accelerated metastasis to the omentum. These events were prevented following ST3G5 depletion in cancer cells. Mechanistically, ST3G5high‐cExos upregulated chemokines, including CC‐chemokine ligand 5 (CCL5), in recipient MΦs and dendritic cells (DCs), which induced MMT and immunosuppression via activation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3). Maraviroc, a C‐C chemokine receptor type 5 (CCR5) antagonist, prevented ST3G5high‐cExo‐mediated MMT, T‐cell suppression, and metastasis in MSs. Our results suggest ST3G5 as a suitable therapeutic target for preventing cExo‐mediated peritoneal dissemination.

Abstract

Pruning the weights of randomly initialized neural networks plays an important role in the context of lottery ticket hypothesis. Ramanujan et al. (2020) empirically showed that only pruning the weights can achieve remarkable performance instead of optimizing the weight values. However, to achieve the same level of performance as the weight optimization, the pruning approach requires more parameters in the networks before pruning and thus more memory space. To overcome this parameter inefficiency, we introduce a novel framework to prune randomly initialized neural networks with iteratively randomizing weight values (IteRand). Theoretically, we prove an approximation theorem in our framework, which indicates that the randomizing operations are provably effective to reduce the required number of the parameters. We also empirically demonstrate the parameter efficiency in multiple experiments on CIFAR-10 and ImageNet.
