Improving animal health and welfare in livestock systems depends on reliable proxies for assessment and monitoring. The aim of this project was to develop a novel method that relies on animal-based indicators and data-driven metrics for assessing health and welfare at farm level for the most common livestock species in Switzerland. Method development followed a uniform multi-stage process for each species. Scientific literature was systematically reviewed to identify potential health and welfare indicators for cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and poultry. Suitable indicators were applied in the field and compared with outcomes of the Welfare Quality® scores of a given farm. To identify farms at risk for violations of animal welfare regulations, several agricultural and animal health databases were interconnected and various supervised machine-learning techniques were applied to model the status of farms. Literature reviews identified a variety of indicators, some of which are well established, while others lack reliability or practicability, or still need further validation. Data quality and availability strongly varied among animal species, with most data available for dairy cows and pigs. Data-based indicators were almost exclusively limited to the categories “Animal health” and “Husbandry and feeding”. The assessment of “Appropriate behavior” and “Freedom from pain, suffering, harm and anxiety” depended largely on indicators that had to be assessed and monitored on-farm. The different machine-learning techniques used to identify farms for risk-based animal welfare inspections reached similar classification performances with sensitivities above 80%. Features with the highest predictive weights were: Participation in federal ecological and animal welfare programs, farm demographics and farmers' notification discipline for animal movements. A common method with individual sets of indicators for each species was developed. The results show that, depending on data availability for the individual animal categories, models based on proxy data can achieve high correlations with animal health and welfare assessed on-farm. Nevertheless, for sufficient validity, a combination of data-based indicators and on-farm assessments is currently required. For a broad implementation of the methods, alternatives to extensive manual on-farm assessments are needed, whereby smart farming technologies have great potential to support the assessment if the specific monitoring goals are defined.

Mit der fortschreitenden Digitalisierung der Gesellschaft im Allgemeinen und der Landwirtschaft im Besonderen gewinnt auch das digitale Monitoring in der Nutztierhaltung zunehmend an Bedeutung. Seit der Einführung der ersten automatisierten Systeme in den 1980er-Jahren wurden verschiedene Ansätze des Monitorings entwickelt. Die Anwendung und Verbreitung solcher Systeme ist allerdings unterschiedlich und Neuerungen setzen sich oft nur langsam durch. Natürlich bergen alle Neuerungen sowohl Risiken als auch Chancen. Wir fassen in diesem Artikel die von den Akteuren erwartete künftige Entwicklung zusammen und stützen uns dabei auf die Informationen, die bei Diskussionen in Fokusgruppen gesammelt wurden. Dazu wurde für die Akteure ein Workshop zum Thema Tiermonitoring und Digitalisierung in der Nutztierhaltung organisiert (KTBL-Fachgespräch), der im November 2017 in Kassel mit 30 eingeladenen Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmern aus verschiedenen Interessengruppen stattfand. Es wurden vier Schlüsselbotschaften identifiziert: 1. Gesundheit und Wohlbefinden von Nutztieren können durch eine optimierte Prozesskontrolle unter Verwendung objektiver Echtzeitdaten verbessert werden, ohne dass auf Entscheidungen durch Menschen verzichtet wird. 2. Innovative Prozesse können neue Haltungssysteme und Märkte hervorbringen. 3. Künftig könnten Personen mit vielfältigeren Hintergründen und Interessensausprägungen und hochqualifizierte Fachpersonen in der Landwirtschaft tätig werden. 4. Kleine Betriebe könnten von der Digitalisierung profitieren. Unsere Erkenntnisse aus dem Workshop zeigen, dass es wichtig ist, für die Weiterentwicklung der Landwirtschaft Möglichkeiten anzubieten und Hindernisse abzubauen, damit wegweisende Technologien, neue Akteure und frische Ideen ihr Potenzial entfalten können. Die politischen Entscheidungsträger müssen mit der Vorgabe geeigneter Rahmenbedingungen die Sicherheit und den Schutz der Daten sowie faire Arbeits- und Marktbedingungen für die Akteure sicherstellen., LANDTECHNIK, Bd. 75 Nr. 1 (2020)

In rangeland and mountain areas it can be difficult and labour intensive to find livestock in order to check health and welfare. In addition, wild predators can be counted as substantial thread to the livelihood of farmers and to animal welfare. Modern technology can support stock personnel by tracking animals to decrease labour costs and ensure animal welfare. However, one major limitation is the energy demand of these systems. In a pilot study, we were testing a new low cost radio technology with minimal energy requirements and large range. A GPS tracking device was integrated into collar. Every 30 mins the position of the animal can be send through “LoRa” (Long Range, Chirp Spread Spectrum Technology from Semtech Cooperation) Ten collars were deployed in a first pilot study in the Alps on eight sheep, one donkey and a livestock guardian dog. A reception sensitivity above -144 dBm could be reached with the chosen modulation parameters. The propagation simulation, including the mountainous topography in the area of the animals’ home range, predicted an adequate coverage. Therefore, 90% of the position massages were transmitted successfully. In future, data of the integrated 3-D-accelerometers can be used to identify unusual behaviour of the animals for predictive healthcare, estrous detection or alert stock personnel in case a wild predator attack is taking place.

Durch die zunehmende Automatisierung der Tierhaltung gewinnt die Tier-Technik-Beziehung zunehmend an Bedeutung. Es besteht ein wachsendes Interesse am Tierverhalten, den Möglichkeiten des Lernens der Tiere und den Anpassungsstrategien. In der Dissertation untersuchte ich die Melk-, und Milchparameter und das Tierverhalten bei der automatischen Milchgewinnung. Die Messungen haben gezeigt, dass auf die Milchabgabe einzelner Individuen und insbesondere auf deren Euterviertel sehr differenziert einzugehen ist. Das Automatische Melksystem (AMS) vermag auf die speziellen Unterschiede der einzelnen Viertel, im Sinne einer verbesserten Tiergerechtheit, Rücksicht zu nehmen. Ein weiterer wichtiger Aspekt die Tiergerechtheit zu verbessern ist es, eine zuverlässige Prozesskontrolle durchzuführen. Dazu muss zunächst einmal festgestellt werden, wie sich die natürliche Variationsbreite der einzelnen Parameter darstellt, um pathologisch bedingte Abweichungen signifikant erkennen zu können. Die Gewinnung von verlässlichen Aussagen über den Gesundheitszustand von Kühen im AMS setzen voraus, dass verschiedene interdependente Parameter so verknüpft oder deren Messungen sooft wiederholt werden, bis ein intelligentes Entscheidungssystem seine Schlüsse ziehen kann. Dabei ist zu beachten, dass stark auffällige Werte ein hohes Maß an Information haben, aber eine entsprechend geringe Verlässlichkeit aufweisen. Sich wiederholende Werte haben hingegen einen geringen Informationsgehalt, dafür aber ein hohes Maß an Redundanz bzw. Verlässlichkeit, soweit sie nicht durch systematische Fehler entstehen. Für eine zuverlässige Prozesskontrolle kann es manchmal vorteilhafter sein, eine automatisierte Datengewinnung zu installieren, auch wenn der einzelne Parameter (z. B. die Leitfähigkeit) zwar wenig aussagekräftig, dafür aber die Durchführung deutlich zuverlässiger ist als bei Tests, die von Menschen manuell durchgeführt werden. Ähnliches gilt für die Haltungsumwelt von Tieren. Eine durch Automation dominierte Umwelt kann für Tiere deutlich berechenbarer und damit zuverlässiger gestaltet werden. Das bedeutet, dass für die Individuen weniger Stresssituationen mit den für sie unabsehbaren Folgen entstehen. Es sollte aber dabei beachtet werden, dass es zwingend ist, auf die Lerngeschwindigkeit der einzelnen Tiere, in Abhängigkeit von ihrer jeweiligen Lernsituation, einzugehen, um zuverlässige Umweltbedingungen für die Kühe mit einem AMS bereitzustellen. Es konnte weiterhin festgestellt werden, dass das Melken in einem AMS bei den Kühen nicht als belastender Stressfaktor identifiziert werden kann, wenn man die Herzfrequenz als Indikator heranzieht und diese über eine längere Zeit analysiert. Der zunehmende Einsatz von Technik in der Milchviehhaltung kann einen wichtigen Beitrag dazu leisten, die Haltungsumwelt der Kühe human und tiergerecht zu gestalten. Relationship between animal and technology in automatic milk production: Due to the fact of the increasing automation in husbandry systems becomes the relationship between the animal and the technology more and more important. There is a growing interest to know more about animal behaviour, the ability of learning and the coping strategies in such systems. In the thesis I investigated the parameter of milking, of milk and of animal behaviour in an Automatic Milking System (AMS). The measurement has shown that the milk yield differs very much between the quarters of the udder. An AMS has the possibility to take such differences into consideration. This is one step towards more animal welfare. Another improvement of animal welfare is a better control of the process. For that, it is important to have a certain knowledge about the natural variation of different parameters, such as electrical conductivity of the milk, milk ingredients or milk yield. This makes the basis of the identification of anomalies depending on pathological problems. To get a reliable declaration about the state of health one has to connect different interdependent parameters and/or the measurement has to be repeated so often until an intelligent decision system can draw conclusions. Besides it is important to know, that a conspicuous value is highly informative, but it is less reliable, otherwise is an often repeatable value less informative but highly redundant, if there is no systematic failure. For a control of the process it is important to get reliable information, so it is sometimes better to automat the tests, instead of using human knowledge, which is often more informative, but less reliable (i.e. electrical conductivity). There is a similarity in husbandry systems because an automated system can be much more reliable and calculable for animals. That means less stressing situations because of incalculable reactions. For such a reliable environment in an AMS it is necessary to give every cow their individual time to learn the facts about the AMS. The milking in an AMS cannot be identified as a negative stress factor, if one uses the measurement of heart rate for identification. The increasing automation in the dairy husbandry can be an important contribution to create a humane environment for dairy cows and improve animal welfare.
