Surface textures are indispensable to minimize optical losses in perovskite-based solar cells. However, the solution-processing of perovskite layers is often not compatible with textured substrates, and little is known about the film growth thereon. This study aims to elucidate the growth process of perovskite layers from solution on textured substrates and to identify the texture features ensuring compatibility with perovskite solution-processing. Using nanoimprint-lithography we prepared three different periodically as well as randomly textured glass substrates for spin-coated perovskite solar cells, of which one was duplicated from a commercially available texture. During the perovskite crystallization process, a time-resolved in situ photoluminescence measurement was conducted. The photoluminescence signal was not found to substantially alter using textured substrates with texture heights around 500 nm. Optical absorptance spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopic imaging were applied to investigate the growth, crystal structure, and optical properties of solution-processed perovskite on top of different textures. We find that periodic textures with height around 500 nm enable homogeneous solution-processed perovskite layers with optimized optical performance. In contrast, texture heights of several micrometers lead to macroscopic holes in the perovskite film. The results of this study will help to find optimum optical textures for high-efficiency perovskite single-junction and perovskite-silicon tandem solar cells.

SnO2 is a widely used electron‐transporting layer (ETL) in perovskite solar cells. Despite the high compatibility with the perovskite absorber layers, the presence of traps at the perovskite|SnO2 interface results in performance losses; hence, their modification to improve the performance and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is therefore important. Herein, the SnO2 ETL is enhanced by incorporating a bifunctional aromatic amino fluorine molecule into the SnO2 precursor solution. The fluorine molecule is found to partially substitute the Sn and alter the energy levels while the aniline group aids in regulating the nucleation/growth rate of the perovskite crystalline films. Herein, a hole transporting material‐free carbon‐based PSCs (CPSCs) is fabricated. It is found that perovskite absorber layers deposited on these modified SnO2 hybrid layers have higher optoelectronic quality, resulting in enhanced photovoltaic performance, device stability, and reduced hysteresis in CPSCs. Devices made with the modified hybrid SnO2 layers exhibit power conversion efficiencies of 15.6% significantly better than unmodified SnO2 with 13.5%. CPSCs with these modified SnO2 films also exhibit remarkable retention of 88.7% of their initial PCE for a shelf‐life period (ISOS‐D1I) exceeding 1200 h. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To achieve a monolithic series interconnection of tandem solar cell devices consisting of a perovskite top cell and a CIGSe bottom cell, a two-terminal interconnection scheme is introduced that includes an additional, fourth patterning step, the so-called iso-cut, which separates the window layer stack between the two solar cells. The implementation of this interconnection scheme requires a process development for a total of four structuring steps, which was achieved by systematically varying the laser parameters. Based on a detailed characterization of the individual scribe line properties with respect to their scribe line depth, morphology, electrical functionality, chemical composition and their influence on adjacent and underlying layers, the optimal patterning parameters and suitable process windows were derived for each step, which is a prerequisite for a loss-free monolithic series interconnection in a tandem module.

Carbon‐based hole transport material (HTM)‐free perovskite solar cells (CPSCs) are an innovative device architecture that mitigates inherent challenges associated with record‐breaking perovskite solar cells (PSCs), which rely on metal/HTMs, including instability, manufacturing intricacy, and elevated costs. The photovoltaic efficiency and stability of CPSCs are profoundly influenced by the charge carrier dynamics at the interfaces. Herein, the charge carrier dynamics at the carbon(C)–perovskite interface in CPSCs and its implications on photovoltaic performances and stability, an aspect that has received limited exploration thus far are probed, are investigated using transient surface photovoltage (Tr‐SPV) and transient photoluminescence measurements. The study reveals that the C‐electrode effectively acts as a selective barrier, impeding electrons while facilitating the extraction of holes at the C–perovskite interface. This selective blocking mechanism holds significant implications for improving the performance and stability of CPSCs over HTM‐free PSCs with gold(Au) electrodes. The stability of CPSCs is evaluated by measuring shelf life, maximum power point tracking, Tr‐SPV, and X‐Ray diffraction measurements. Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have become a widely studied class of semiconductors for various optoelectronic devices. The possibility to tune their bandgap (Eg) over a broad spectral range from 1.2 eV to 3 eV by compositional engineering makes them particularly attractive for light emitting devices and multi‐junction solar cells. In this metadata study, data from Peer‐reviewed publications available in the Perovskite Database (www.perovskitedatabase.com) is used to evaluate the current state of Eg tuning in wideEg MHP semiconductors. Recent literature on wide Eg MHP semiconductors is examined and the data is extracted and uploaded onto the Perovskite Database. Beyond describing recent highlights and scientific breakthroughs, general trends are drawn from 45,000 individual experimental datasets of MHP solar cell devices. The historical evolution of MHP solar cells is recapitulated, and general conclusions are drawn about the current limits of device performance. Three dominant causes are identified and discussed for the degradation of performance relative to the Shockley‐Queisser (SQ) model's theoretical limit for single‐junction solar cells: 1) energetically mismatched selective transport materials for wide Eg MHPs, 2) lower optoelectronic quality of wide Eg MHP absorbers, and 3) dynamically evolving compositional heterogeneity due to light‐induced phase segregation phenomena.
