The article is dedicated to the memory of the first director of the Library of Natural Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences (before 1991, the USSR Academy of Sciences). The Library for Natural Sciences was established in 1973 on the basis of the Sector for Special Libraries (in charge of collection development of Moscow research institutes and of their union catalog maintenance). The Library for Natural Sciences was conceived as an information library center focused on science and research information support based on modern technologies. Alexander Grigorievich Zakharov, newly-retired military professional, Lieutenant General, headed the library. In the shortest time possible, Alexander Zakharov built the centralized library system headed by the Library for Natural Sciences and meeting the demands of the time. For many years the Library’s Centralized Library System has been the largest and most developed network; the Library has been the leader in library automation based on the newest computer and network technologies. The authors have been working for the Library for over 40 years, and over 30 years under the leadership of Alexander G. Zakharov. They review the main stages of Zakharov’s career: the Great Patriotic War (he went through the war from beginning to end), his service at cosmodrome of Baikonur (launch operations, including support of Yury Gagarin’s flight), his work in the Library for Natural Sciences.

The studies were accomplished at the Central Scientific Agricultural Library (CSAL) to update the industry-wide linguistic instruments used in the Library’s Information Retrieval System and union catalog of the research institutions’ libraries of the Agroindustrial Complex (AIC) of Russia. The set of linguistic tools is briefly described; the two-level model of the linguistic support structure is introduced. The significance and advantages of using information retrieval languages in the Automated Information-Retrieval System are discussed. The purpose of the study was to improve the information support of research in the AIC in terms of actualization of the database (BD) of the Information Retrieval Thesaurus in Agriculture and Food and the database “Authority File (AF) of Scientific Research Institutions (SRI) in the AIC”. Brief descriptions of these information retrieval languages and their functions are included. The functions of the Information-Search Thesaurus are: to index documents and inquiries; to reflect the paradigmatic relations between lexical units; to control and normalize lexis in agriculture and food; to provide unified and formalized information representation in AGROS database; to expand automatically document search profiles; it also functions as a terminological guide in agriculture and food. As the guide, it retrieves the names of institutions since the foundations date; it can be also used for constructing the bibliographic record element (organization’s name. or corporate author); and retrieves information from information resources. The procedures for adding new lexical items and revising the previously included data are described.

Teza/cel – Przedmiotem artykułu jest lapbook, analizowany jako forma promocji książki dla dzieci. Celem jest określenie potencjału tej formy pracy z użytkownikiem do wzmacniania procesów aktywizacji czytelniczej. Metoda – Zastosowano metodę analizy i krytyki piśmiennictwa. W oparciu o wyszukiwanie prowadzone w katalogu Biblioteki Narodowej i katalogu Worldcat, bazie abstraktowej LISTA oraz wybranych bazach wielodziedzinowych przeszukanych za pomocą narzędzia Google Scholar określono stan badań nad lapbookami. Pod uwagę wzięto wyłącznie prace opublikowane w języku polskim i angielskim w latach 2015-2019. Wyniki – Przeprowadzona analiza literatury przedmiotu pozwala stwierdzić, że wykorzystanie lapbooków nie jest tematem często poruszanym w bibliotekoznawczej literaturze przedmiotu. Wnioski – Lapbook jest narzędziem stosowanym w praktyce bibliotekarskiej o dużym potencjalne dla promocji książki, brakuje jednak omówienia tego zjawiska w piśmiennictwie naukowym.

Teza/cel – Przedmiot artykułu stanowią wybrane nowe zjawiska społeczne, które według American Library Association (ALA) mogą mieć największy wpływ na działania i przyszłość bibliotek. Celem jest omówienie potencjalnych konsekwencji wytypowanych zjawisk dla usług bibliotecznych. Metoda – Zastosowano metodę analizy i krytyki piśmiennictwa. W oparciu o materiały publikowane w serwisie www ALA oraz wyszukiwanie prowadzone w katalogu Biblioteki Narodowej i katalogu WorldCat, bazie abstraktowej LISTA, repozytorium ELIS oraz wybranych bazach wielodziedzinowych określono stan badań nad nowymi zjawiskami społecznymi z perspektywy bibliotekoznawczej. Pod uwagę wzięto wyłącznie prace opublikowane w języku polskim i angielskim w latach 2010-2018. Wyniki – Przeprowadzona analiza piśmiennictwa pozwala stwierdzić, że wskazane przez ALA trendy społeczne nie są często omawiane na gruncie bibliotekoznawstwa. W oparciu o materiały publikowane w serwisie www ALA można jednak sądzić, że wskazane trendy społeczne mogą mieć istotny wpływ na oczekiwania użytkowników względem bibliotek. Wnioski – Przeprowadzona analiza pozwala wysnuć wniosek, że omówione trendy społeczne mogą wpływać na potrzeby i przyzwyczajenia użytkowników, a tym samym na zakres i sposób świadczenia usług bibliotecznych. Biblioteki jako instytucje usługowe działające w przestrzeni społecznej muszą monitorować nowe zjawiska kulturowe, ekonomiczne czy technologiczne i dostosowywać swój sposób działania do aktualnej sytuacji.

The digital cataloguing experience of Presidential Library is discussed. The integrated e-collection comprises digital copies of library materials, archival documents and museum objects, which requires designing methods for describing entries new to library preservation. The Presidential Library’s interdepartmental working group has developed principles and approaches toward integrating presentation and access to the library, archival, and museum resources into the single catalog in accordance with existing international standards. The Presidential Library acts as a methodological center developing special methods for describing diverse information resources. Methodological publications by Presidential Library are considered the logical extension of RUSMARC Application Examples guidance series intended for Russian bibliographizing institutions. The Presidential Library’s work within the framework of the National Standardization Program, National Electronic Library and the union catalog of electronic resources is also discussed. The Library participates in IFLA UNIMARC permanent committees and IFLA Subject Analysis and Access Section. The Presidential Library is an educational center for digital content cataloguing for libraries, and holds training work-shops. It enrolls university graduates in generating the descriptive metadata. The prospective vectors in cataloguing are examined, e. g. designing model description of digital collections and Metadata Encoding and Transmission Standard (METS) implementation.

The experience of IRBIS64 Library Automation System implementation into the specialized library for the blind is discussed. The settings and functions of management of users, collections, and events databases are considered. The key dictionaries of setting storage places and user categories are described. At the library, the user cart html-template has been adapted for various user categories. The AVD System union catalog is used for sharing. The optional IRBIS64-based specialized modules are also discussed, namely the adapted catalog and digital record log designed specifically for the users and services of Kaluga N. Ostrovsky Regional Special Library for the Blind. The methods and principles of software for the blind and visually impaired people are examined. The approach under examination combines the two different methods, that compliant with the international WCAG2.0 standards and the other using cloud technologies of Yandex SpeechKit. The research project enables to fulfill the TyphloCatalog project of designing Internet-based catalog for the specialized libraries for the blind.

This research describes about the usability evaluation of SIMPERTAN application at PUSTAKA Bogor. SIMPERTAN is a web-based application that was developed by PUSTAKA to integrate the process of procurement, organize, service and circulation of library materials and became the union catalog for the PUSTAKA and the Library Institution in Balitbangtan scope. However, the usability of this application is still not optimal because Librarians at PUSTAKA still use other applications, such as WinISIS. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate how the usability of SIMPERTAN applications by librarians in PUSTAKA and the Library Institution in Balitbangtan scope under the guidance of LITERATURE in the Bogor region. This study uses quantitative approaches with quantitative descriptive methods. Data collection is done by survey method using a questionnaire. The results showed that the usability of SIMPERTAN application was in the high category. But there were a number of obstacles from the technical, system and librarian aspects, thus making SIMPERTAN usability less optimal.

The Hellenic Library Union Catalog (HLUC) is one of the projects that were developed as a result of the relocation of the National Library of Greece (NLG), as a part of Action 2 "Development of Digital Services" and was fully funded by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation. It is an information system that aims to integrate and highlight all the collections from the Greek libraries in one single catalog. It was designed and implemented by the NTUA Annex of the Hellenic Academic Libraries Link, in collaboration with the National Library of Greece. It essentially organizes an open access collection of high- quality bibliographic data and aims to promote, amongst other things, rare, special and other types of bibliographic material. All Greek libraries are invited to participate.Currently HLUC is in a pilot phase. So far, more than 50 libraries from Greece and Cyprus are participating and the number of participants is increasing. The objective of the pilot phase was to test the operation of the HLUC by controlling the entire workflow starting from the moment that the data is imported to the system, incorporated and presented via the HLUC environment. Also system failures will be identified and corrected and functions as well as the general infrastructure will be improved. During this pilot phase, system reports will be sent to the member libraries aiming to receive their feedback, in order to improve the services provided by the HLUC. The purpose of this paper is to describe all the procedures followed for studying, designing and developing the system and to present how it works.

This study was undertaken to produce an annotated union catalog of local history resources on Region 8 in 127 libraries and museums throughout Region 8 and major academic institutions in Manila and abroad.This study used the descriptive method of research, particularly the documentary analysis type. The bibliographic data were taken from shelf-list and card catalogs (non-automated libraries), online public access catalog (OPACs), and WebOPAC. Uncatalogued materials were processed and provided with subject headings based on the Sears's List of Subject Headings and LCSH or combination of both, Filipiniana Subject Headings were used for “local terms’, if no equivalent in English “local term” were indicated. The List of subject headings, annotations and locations was provided in this study. The data were then recorded, analyzed and interpreted.This study identified a total of 2,483 titles or 4,894 volumes of materials documenting the Region 8’ arts and culture, history, language, and literature, education, economic, social, political, and intellectual life. These publications include books, journals, microforms, maps, periodical articles, pictures, souvenir programs, and unpublished materials. It was found out that majority of collections found in Region 8 were in printed forms while Manila and abroad has a good number of local history resources in both print and non-print format. The collection covers a total of 2,646 different subject areas. The subject on Academic Achievement had the highest percentage from the unpublished materials followed by Tacloban City (Leyte, Philippines) – Notarial Records from the microform materials. Information agencies included in this study had existing policies and procedures in the preservation and conservation of these materials but only few have written preservation policies.This annotated union catalog would help researchers, historians and librarians in locating materials for historical studies in Region 8.

The article aims to demonstrate the results of research and bringing to the technological implementation, in the Library for Natural Scien­ces of the Russian Academy of Sciences (LNS RAS), of a full cycle of works, from identification of rare books in the collections, their description and scanning, to their registration in the Union Catalog and Electronic Library. The author gives a brief description of the software package developed at LNS RAS for creating the Electronic Catalog and full-text Electronic Library of Rare Publications, as well as the scheme of automated interaction of all technological departments involved in the process. The information on practical implementation and directions of the technology development is given. The article presents a brief review of the research, with the identified part of the collection of rare publications of the LNS RAS. For the first time, the Central Library of the LNS RAS implements the Union Catalog and Electronic Library of Rare Publications, reflecting not only the bibliographic information on the publications, but also the data on their specific features (author’s inscriptions, bookplates, stamps, etc.). Rare publications previously inaccessible to researchers, though already used by scientists of the RAS institutes, are introduced into scientific circulation. The article identifies and describes materials about geographical expeditions of the 18th—19th centuries and samples of Russian and foreign book printing of the 18th century. For the first time, the LNS RAS conducts research related to the history of Russian science and printing, and identifies bookplates and proprietary marks of Russian scientists, which have not previously been reflected in ca­talogs. This opens a new cultural layer of historical data, now available to researchers.

The Library of UIN Raden Fatah Palembang is one of the university libraries that uses a system automation and union catalog system to meet the information needs of the academic community. This study aims to determine the level of satisfaction of users in utilizing union catalog using the End User Computing Catalog Satisfaction (EUCS) approach. This study uses a quantitative method with a total sample of 100 visitors to the Palembang Raden Fatah UIN Library. From the calculation of the mean and grand mean it was found that the subvariable content obtained a high score of 3.98, the subvariable accuracy obtained a high score of 3.97. In the subvariabel the format obtained a high score of 4.09. punctuality earned a high score of 4.01. The grand mean catalog satisfaction variable together with the End User Computing Satisfaction approach, obtained a value of 4.03 from the average value of 5 satisfaction subvariables. Just as citations to a book can be counted, so can that book's libcitations—the number of libraries in a consortium that hold it. These holdings counts per title can be obtained from the consortium's union catalog, such as OCLC's WorldCat. Librarians seeking to serve their customers well must be attuned to various kinds of merit in books. The result in WorldCat is a great variation in the libcitations particular books receive. The higher a title's count (or percentile), the more famous it is—either absolutely or within a subject class. Degree of fame also indicates cultural impact, allowing that further documentation of impact may be needed. Using WorldCat data, we illustrate high, medium, and low degrees of fame with 170 titles published during 1990–1995 or 2001–2006 and spanning the 10 main Dewey classes. We use their total libcitation counts or their counts from members of the Association of Research Libraries, or both, as of late 2011. Our analysis of their fame draws on the recognizability of their authors, the extent to which they and their authors are covered by Wikipedia, and whether they have movie or TV versions. Ordinal scales based on Wikipedia coverage and on libcitation counts are very significantly associated.

The research attempts to explain Portal Union Catalog Server (UCS) based on Senayan Library Management Systems (SLiMS) in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Portal UCS becomes the media of technological information in developing cooperation among libraries in searching of the collection in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. This research principally aims to know the implementation of that portal, the obstacles it deals with, and the hope of SLiMS Community on Portal UCS Sulsellib. This research is basically included as a descriptive research using a qualitative approach. As regards to informants as the data sources of research, they are mainly some superintendents and users of Portal UCS Sulsellib. Some research shows that the implementation of Portal UCS Sulsellib can be very helpful for library users in accessing information of collection in various libraries in South Sulawesi because it is only through one door of the portal web of UCS Sulsellib. SLiMS community uses the technic of Waterfall model adapted from System Development Life Cycle (SDLC). The stages of applying this portal are based on waterfall model that is planning, analysis, display design, promotion, implementation, and maintenance. The hope is that this research can extensively upgrade the performance of Portal UCS Sulsellib so that it can be very helpful to explore a collection of information to be more effective and efficient. Besides, it will be used as references to renew the union catalog system.

Teza/cel: Przedmiot artykułu stanowi zagadnienie wizualizacji danych w nauce. Celem artykułu jest dokonanie systematycznego przeglądu nowych sposobów i narzędzi wizualizacji danych naukowych. Metoda: Zastosowano metodę analizy i krytyki piśmiennictwa. Dokonano przeglądu piśmiennictwa z lat 2010-2015 biorąc pod uwagę publikacje w języku polskim i angielskim. Zebrane piśmiennictwo poddano kategoryzacji, celem wyodrębnienia kluczowych trendów w wizualizacji danych naukowych. Analizy piśmiennictwa dokonano w oparciu o wyszukiwanie w bazach Biblioteki Narodowej, katalogu WorldCat oraz zagranicznych bazach danych, które przeszukano za pomocą narzędzia Google Scholar. Uzupełniająco dokonano także przeglądu zasobów sieciowych, w tym szczególnie blogów i portali branżowych. Wyniki: Do najczęściej omawianych sposobów wizualizacji danych za pomocą nowych narzędzi należą: infografiki, postery, hologramy, druk 3D oraz wizualizacje tworzone w środowisku wirtualnej i rozszerzonej rzeczywistości. Wnioski: Ważnym problemem wymagającym rozwiązania jest przetwarzanie dynamicznych, rozległych i nieustrukturyzowanych zbiorów danych, które wymykają się tradycyjnym analizom. Potrzebne jest tworzenie wizualizacji danych w taki sposób, by były one dla użytkowników angażujące, interaktywne i sprzyjały immersji.

The Prospector project represents a unique union catalog. The origin, goals, and design of the union catalog that uses the INN-Reach system are presented. Challenges of the union catalog include the integration of records from libraries that do not use the Innovative Interfaces system and the development of best practices for participating libraries.

The creation of the Medical Library Center of New York (MLCNY) was a significant contribution to the history of health sciences librarianship as a model for cooperative, democratic, and practical solutions to the issues of storage and resource sharing. The MLCNY’s founding director, Erich Meyerhoff, was a key figure in the successful start-up and ongoing operations of the center, which operated from 1960–2003 and served the greater New York area and beyond. This essay traces the evolution of the center including the creation of the Union Catalog of Medical Periodicals and the demise of the center occasioned by changes in scholarly publishing, technology, and constituent needs.

The aim of this study is to understand, describe, and analyze metadata interoperability in Universitas Brawijaya Library that used Brawijaya Knowledge Garden (BKG) and Eprints software, University of Muhammadiyah Malang Library that used Ganesha Digital Library (GDL) and Eprints software, and Malang State Library that used Muatan Lokal (Mulok) software. This study also discussed supporting and inhibiting factors for interoperability metadata. This study employed a case study-qualitative approach. The finding indicates that the metadata interoperability can be performed by using metadata crosswalks. Implementation metadata crosswalks by mapping BKG fields and GDL Fields to the Dublin Core Metadata Element Set (DCMES). The results in the mapping of appropriate metadata schemes without removing the existing metadata scheme element and demonstrating technical specifications for standard metadata. Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) features can use for metadata interoperability in the union catalog that have been being developed by the National Library of Indonesia, called Indonesia OneSearch. The supporting factors in metadata interoperability are standard metadata and a standard protocol for interoperability; whereas, the inhibiting factor is the minimum human resources having metadata capability and the open access policy that has not applied to each academic libraries. All of those academic libraries need to make an effort to external interoperability to union catalogs to improve visibility digital content and applied open access policies.

Purpose - This is a descriptive paper highlighting the Hellenic Library Union Catalogue (HLUC) which is an information system that aims to integrate and highlight all the collections from the Greek libraries in one single catalogue. Design/methodology/approach – The HLUC information system was designed and developed by NTUA-HEAL-Link and the National Library of Greece. The approach used was to organize an open access collection of high-quality bibliographic data and the aim has been to promote, amongst other things, rare, special and other types of bibliographic material. The project is currently in a pilot phase. So far, more than 50 libraries from Greece and Cyprus are participating and the number of participants is increasing. Originality/value - The project responds to a real contemporary need of the entirety of the libraries, and will offer a service which will promote the history and the treasures of the Greek libraries, independently of their type, being public, or academic. Recent contributions in the expanding discipline of scientometry and bibliometrics have started to study not only the "impact" of publications in journals, but also in books. This methodology can be applied to individual authors or even to the "impact" of entire publishing companies. One basic idea of this kind of analysis is simple, not to say downright vulgar. Is a book or book series important, it must be surely not only be cited internationally, but it also must be physically or electronically present in a library, because after all, scientists and students will want to work with the book. Such comparisons can use the information, provided by the open-access version of the OCLC "Worldcat". The global union catalog OCLC was founded in America in 1967 and today integrates library collections in 113 countries around the world. OCLC Classify can pinpoint with accuracy how many libraries in the world - from northern Norway to Chile, and from California to Europe and Africa to Australia, including Russia and India - have copies of the scientific work x or y in their inventory; and the system also ranks the works of each global author by the number of global libraries, holding the item. Adam Smith's classic "An Inquiry Into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations" manages to be held in 41051 libraries; and William Shakespeare's "The tragey of Romeo and Juliet" in 39911 libraries. Among the possible new indicators to measure the impacts of books or book series we also designed a new measure, based on the check-out rate according to the Harvard-Hollis catalog, reflecting the use of a book/book series in the largest academic library in the world, offering clues to the de-facto reading habits of the university community, which accounts for more than 1 out of 6 academic trajectories of Nobel Prize winners. Applying the logic of the Harvard catalogue to two leading German economists, we realize for example that Hanns-Werner Sinn from CESifo Institute in Munich and Marcel Fratzscher from the German Institute for Economic Research in Berlin both receive an astonishingly high check-out rate of their works among the Harvard academic community. The Hollis catalog easily provides us also with information according to which the check-out rate of books that have been published by Cambridge University Press is somewhat higher than that of Princeton UP or Chicago U.P. et cetera. In our paper, we then analyze the library holding and publishing patterns of the Nobel laureates in economics, 1994-2014. More than 50% of their best and second most widely globally held book publications were concentrated among just 8 publishing companies, all of which are known by their rigorous peer-review 1) Cambridge University Press 2) Princeton University Press 3) Harvard University Press and affiliates 4) Cambridge, MA: National Bureau of Economic Research 5) Oxford University Press 6) New York: W. W. Norton 7) University of Chicago Press 8) University of Minnesota Press We then briefly discuss the previous rankings of publishing companies already published in the literature, mainly the ranking by the Dutch Science Consortium SENSE, and the University of Granada ranking system, which relies on the newly created Thomson-Reuters "Book Citation Index". The Granada ranking puts Springer, Palgrave Macmillan, Routledge, Cambridge University Press, Elsevier, Nova Science Publishers, Edward Elgar, Information Age Publishing, Princeton University Press and University of California Press among the best-placed publishers. There are described the main results of the work on creation of the “Union catalogue of Russian books, 1826—1917” as bibliographic repertoire, which lasted from 1976 to 2003. By the end of the 1990-ies, the card database of “Union catalogue” was reconciled with the catalogues of all six libraries-participants. Bibliographers of the Russian State Library carried out the rework and editing of bibliographic records in accordance with the normative documents being in force on that time, formed the data to create additional access points for the future database (names of people who took part in creation of the book, names-personalias, names of institutions and organizations, to which the books are devoted, titles of series). There had been done a tremendous job with use of modern reference and bibliographic sources, viewing of publications (de visu), that allowed to clarify the forms of several hundred names and titles, to reveal many of cryptonyms and pseudonyms, to clarify the modern spelling of names of foreign authors. But revision and editing of the card mass of catalogue remained unfinished. On its basis the Corporation “Electronic archive” created the “Electronic Union catalogue of Russian books of the 19th century”, but due to a number of drawbacks it will not be considered as a full-fledged national bibliographic repertoire. The task on creation of an intrinsic repertoire and bibliographic resource remains relevant. It should be kept by separate chronological periods on the basis on the integrated use of bibliographic records for electronic catalogues of the Russian State Library and National Library of Russia, and electronic and card consolidated catalogues of 1826—1917. Se realiza un estudio de la eficiencia y efectividad del servicio de catálogo colectivo de publicaciones seriadas del Sistema Nacional de Información de Ciencias Médicas de Cuba, en el que se consideran los indicadores costo-tiempo-productividad para medir la eficiencia. La efectividad se evalúa mediante el análisis de la necesidad . Los resultados obtenidos muestran valores positivos en cuanto a la eficiencia, aunque en relación con la efectividad no son tan satisfactorios. Se ofrecen los resultados en forma de números absolutos y en valores porcentuales, que se representan en gráficos estadísticos y tablas.

This work addresses the dispersion of learning resources on the Internet-many languages, all areas of knowledge, aims at different audiences, many “sizes” and varied quality; many are open to all. This paper presents the results of some searches on the Internet for Control Systems resources and suggests the implementation of a union catalog of metadata of contents from cooperating institutions. Union catalogs of theses and dissertations are mentioned as possible models.

W 2017 roku minęło 15 lat od oficjalnego rozpoczęcia działalności Narodowego Uniwersalnego Katalogu Centralnego NUKAT. Przez ten czas katalog centralny na trwałe wpisał się w polską rzeczywistość biblioteczną i w zasadniczy sposób zmienił organizację pracy bibliotekarzy przy katalogowaniu dokumentów. Jednak wydaje się, że potencjał katalogu NUKAT wciąż nie jest w pełni wykorzystywany. Oznacza to, że potrzebuje bardziej kompleksowych działań promocyjnych w celu lepszego prezentowania zasobów polskich bibliotek akademickich i naukowych oraz skuteczniejszego zaspokajania potrzeb informacyjnych użytkowników. Potrzebne są badania użytkowników, ścisła współpraca z bibliotekami partnerskimi NUKAT w zakresie działań marketingowych, a także – a może przede wszystkim – konsolidacja przedsięwzięć w zakresie wzajemnego promowania. Artykuł podsumowuje dotychczasowe działania promocyjne Centrum NUKAT i stanowi zaproszenie do podjęcia dalszej współpracy w tym zakresie. In 2017 NUKAT union catalog has already been operating for 15 years. During this period it became a permanent part of Polish library landscape and significantly changed the way librarians organize their cataloging tasks. Still however, it has not reached its full potential. That means it requires more complex promotional activities in order to present information on the resources of Polish academic and research libraries in a better way and be more effective in responding to users’ information needs. Those activities should include some research on users’ needs, close cooperation with NUKAT member libraries as regards the marketing practices and – last but not least – the consolidation of mutual advertising projects. The present review sums up the promotional activities of NUKAT Center performed so far, being at the same time an invitation to further cooperation on that issue.

In order to re-activation of shared cataloging, spirit of commu nity and cooperation are most needed. But proper compensation about contribution would motiva te. Through representing basic data for making compensation policy about university libr ary’s share cataloging system, this study analyzes activities about contribution and utilizati on of participated libraries. To put it concretely, this study considers overall status of contr ibution and utilization through descriptive statistics and analyzes relationship between both s ides. Furthermore through clustering participating library, this study brightened the lib raries that ought to be compensated and who would be need to be specially rewarded. Child welfare is "that part of human services and social welfare programs and ideologies oriented toward the protection, care, and healthy development of children" [Barker 1991: 35], and social welfare archives are "among the cumulative by-products of social welfare activities" [KlaassenSteinwall 1987: 150]. Social welfare archives may include accreditation reports and responses, annual reports, budgets, biographical information, bylaws, charters, client case records, contracts, constitutions with amendments, consultants' reports, correspondence, manuals and handbooks, minutes, photographs, reports, and salary schedules, among other items [Barbeau & Lohmann 1992]. The researcher should consider which of these will be of importance in examining archival records.A General Approach to Sources of Archival MaterialColleagues are often invaluable in suggesting archival sources to the prospective researcher, and reference and subject librarians can also be helpful at every stage of the research process. Under the heading Child Welfare, the subject index yields a reference to a survey of child welfare literature spanning 75 years [Brown 1960].Directories of Archival and Manuscript CollectionsOne ongoing compilation of monumental proportions is the National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections (NUCMC), which began publication with its 1959-61 volume [Library of Congress 1962]. Collections are listed if they are "located in a public or quasi-public repository that regularly admits researchers." It does not list collections that are logically part of a functioning institution or organization such as municipal materials in a municipal agency, but it does include "archival records found outside the normal archival repository" [Library of Congress 1962: vi]. …

The study aimed at comparing the Union Catalog of the Egyptian University Library Consortium and that of OhioLINK by examining the components of each union catalog, searching strategies (simple search, advanced search); the types of records they contain; the searching types (Boolean, truncation, proximity…etc.); whether is possible to identify the types of documents indexed, the location of a document; whether it is possible to search within a time limit; the language of the document; the metadata given for each document; whether there is a help button on the screen; how accurate and relevant the search results are; how efficient the search engine is; and the difficulties that a researcher confronts while searching each union catalog. The study reports the results of the analysis and comparison in detail and will give suggestions and recommendations for improving the Union Catalog of the Egyptian University Library consortium.

Purpose – This paper aims to report on the methodology and findings of the China Academic Library and Information System (CALIS) Model Member Libraries (MML) plan which evaluated the success of interlibrary loan and document delivery (ILL/DD) services among 71 CALIS member libraries. Design/methodology/approach – CALIS constructed an evaluation instrument consisting of a set of primary and secondary performance indicators, which were used to assess participating libraries in a number of areas such as the number of bibliographic holdings contributed to the union catalog, the number of qualified professional staff dedicated to ILL/DD, the amount of training provided for library staff and end-users, request volume, fill rate, turnaround time and user satisfaction. Findings – CALIS has implemented the evaluation with the purpose of better understanding ILL/DD service among its member libraries. The evaluation has achieved the expected targets and improved service performance as originally planned. The performance measures provide a basis for the MML to compare their ILL/DD service performance with another similar institution. Originality/value – According to the evaluation, the major objectives of MML on ILL/DD service are summarized.

International audience; The union catalog Rachel was launched in 2004 by four Parisian private libraries with significant holdings in Judaica and Hebraica. Further developed by the Réseau Européen des Bibliothèques Judaica et Hebraica (REBJH; European Network of Judaica and Hebraica Libraries), Rachel moves forward the network's mission to promote the preservation and increase the use of the recorded heritage of the Jewish people in Europe and around the world. The article reviews the history of the REBJH and its founding members, analyses cataloging practices of member institutions of Rachel, and describes user services provided by this union catalog.

The Bibliothèque Medem (or Medem-Bibliotek, in Yiddish), in Paris, is the largest Yiddish library in Western and Central Europe, as well as a major Jewish cultural center. Founded in 1928 by a group of Eastern European Jewish immigrants who were aligned with the socialist Bund, its trajectory over eight decades (including the four years of the German occupation) is chronicled here. Today, the collections of the Bibliothèque Medem comprise 20,000 volumes in Yiddish and 10,000 titles in the Latin alphabet dealing with Jewish culture. In addition, it maintains about 30,000 uncataloged book volumes, extensive serial holdings, 300 posters, archives of a number of Yiddish authors, and a sound archive containing 7,500 recordings. Together with the libraries of the Alliance Israélite Universelle and the Séminaire Israélite de France (SIF), the Bibliothèque Medem is a principal partner in the Réseau Européen des Bibliothèques Judaica et Hebraica (European Network of Judaica and Hebraica Libraries), which administers their union catalog and sponsors digitization projects of their holdings.

Mid-size academic libraries face the dilemma of limited funding and space but are expected to provide the tools their graduate students and faculty need to compete in research. A question faced by these institutions is whether to weed potentially useful paper finding aids of the pre-online era. One example is the 754 volume National Union Catalog Pre-1956 Imprints (NUC). Has the content and current use of the NUC justified its retention by libraries in mid-size universities? The authors provide historical background of the NUC and the results of a survey of librarians from mid-size academic institutions that explores their perspectives on the tool’s continued utility and their institutions’ ultimate decisions on its fate.

Efforts at networking and cooperation have flourished for some time at the University of the West Indies (UWI), a regional institution in the English-speaking Caribbean. Due to their common mission and shared goals, libraries within the system have collaborated on projects to enhance the services provided to their clients. In its attempt at collaboration, the Mona Campus established the UWI Mona Information Network, the primary goal of which is the creation of a campus-wide online catalog with member libraries having access to a larger pool of resources. Most of the departmental libraries within the system have struggled with their inability to adequately acquire and provide access to their collections. To this end some of these libraries have collaborated with the UWI Library to have their holdings added to the online public access catalog (OPAC). This article presents an overview of the collaborative efforts of the UWI Mona Libraries.
