Over the past few decades, neuroimaging has become a ubiquitous tool in basic research and clinical studies of the human brain. However, no reference standards currently exist to quantify individual differences in neuroimaging metrics over time, in contrast to growth charts for anthropometric traits such as height and weight1. Here we assemble an interactive open resource to benchmark brain morphology derived from any current or future sample of MRI data ( http://www.brainchart.io/ ). With the goal of basing these reference charts on the largest and most inclusive dataset available, acknowledging limitations due to known biases of MRI studies relative to the diversity of the global population, we aggregated 123,984 MRI scans, across more than 100 primary studies, from 101,457 human participants between 115 days post-conception to 100 years of age. MRI metrics were quantified by centile scores, relative to non-linear trajectories2 of brain structural changes, and rates of change, over the lifespan. Brain charts identified previously unreported neurodevelopmental milestones3, showed high stability of individuals across longitudinal assessments, and demonstrated robustness to technical and methodological differences between primary studies. Centile scores showed increased heritability compared with non-centiled MRI phenotypes, and provided a standardized measure of atypical brain structure that revealed patterns of neuroanatomical variation across neurological and psychiatric disorders. The melting mechanism of Na 2 SiO 3 , a crystal with pyroxene structure, includes three distinct reactions. All are driven by heating with each reaction commencing at a different temperature. The first two reactions proceed within the crystal at temperatures well below the melting point and are expressed by distinctive crystallographic, calorimetric, and Raman spectroscopic changes to the crystal. With the reactions identified and explained for Na 2 SiO 3 (c) and the melting mechanism elucidated, the Na 2 SiO 3 system becomes the “Rosetta Stone” by which to decipher the melting mechanisms of all pyroxenes and other silicate minerals. The first reaction produces itinerant Na + within the crystal. Itinerancy results from dissociation of some NBO-Na bonds due to heating, with dissociation commencing at ~770 K. The reaction proceeds according to: Si-O-Na → Si-O – + Na + . The Si-O − moiety remains attached to its SiO 3 chain and it is charged because one of its NBO atoms has no associated Na ion. The second reaction is characterized by the appearance of a Q 3 band in Raman spectra of the crystal at temperatures >770 K. It is produced via a polymerization reaction involving the Si-O − species, a product of the first reaction, and a Q 2 species of an adjacent SiO 3 chain according to: 1 Na 2 -Q 2 + 1 ( Na 1 -Q 2 ) − → 2 Na 1 -Q 3 + Na + + O 2 − . Na atoms are included with each Q species to preserve mass balances and (Na 1 -Q 2 ) − is equivalent to the Si-O − species. The produced Q 3 species form cross-chain linkages that affect the crystallographic properties of the crystal. They are responsible for the cessation of thermal expansion of the Na 2 SiO 3 unit cell in the a – b axial plane at T >770 K, and the near-constancy of a and b unit-cell parameters between ~770 and ~1300 K. The presence of Q 3 species in Raman spectra and the inhibited expansion in the a – b axial plane provide exceedingly strong evidence for this reaction. The third reaction commences at ~1200 K where Q 1 Raman band first appears. It can be produced only through depolymerization of Q 2 chains according to: 2 Na 2 -Q 2 + 2 Na + + O 2 − → 2 Na 3 -Q 1 where Na + and O 2− are itinerant species produced by the second reaction. With conversion of Q 2 to Q 1 species, SiO 3 chains are ruptured, long-range order is lost, and melt is produced at 1362 K. The last two reactions proceed by nucleophilic substitution where Si centers are attacked to form fivefold-coordinated activated complexes. Si-O − acts as nucleophile in the second reaction (producing Q 3 species), and O 2− acts as nucleophile in the third reaction (producing Q 1 ). Taken in reverse, these mechanisms describe the formation of nuclei in crystallizing melts and in addition provide insight into the elusive changes that occur at the glass transition. Elucidation of the melting mechanism could thus provides a unified framework within which melting, crystallization, and the glass transition can be understood.

However, the ecological niches of individual AM fungal taxa are poorly understood. We collected > 300 soil samples from natural ecosystems worldwide and modelled the realised niches of AM fungal virtual taxa (VT; approximately species-level phylogroups). We found that environmental and spatial variables jointly explained VT distribution worldwide, with temperature and pH being the most important abiotic drivers, and spatial effects generally occurring at local to regional scales. While dispersal limitation could explain some variation in VT distribution, VT relative abundance was almost exclusively driven by environmental variables. Several environmental and spatial effects on VT distribution and relative abundance were correlated with phylogeny, indicating that closely related VT exhibit similar niche optima and widths. Major clades within the Glomeraceae exhibited distinct niche optima, Acaulosporaceae generally had niche optima in low pH and low temperature conditions, and Gigasporaceae generally had niche optima in high precipitation conditions. Identification of the realised niche space occupied by individual and phylogenetic groups of soil microbial taxa provides a basis for building detailed hypotheses about how soil communities respond to gradients and manipulation in ecosystems worldwide. The Breast Size Satisfaction Survey (BSSS) was established to assess women's breast size dissatisfaction and breasted experiences from a cross-national perspective. A total of 18,541 women were recruited from 61 research sites across 40 nations and completed measures of current-ideal breast size discrepancy, as well as measures of theorised antecedents (personality, Western and local media exposure, and proxies of socioeconomic status) and outcomes (weight and appearance dissatisfaction, breast awareness, and psychological well-being). in the total dataset, 47.5 % of women wanted larger breasts than they currently had, 23.2 % wanted smaller breasts, and 29.3 % were satisfied with their current breast size. There were significant cross-national differences in mean ideal breast size and absolute breast size dissatisfaction, but effect sizes were small (eta(2) = .02-.03). the results of multilevel modelling showed that greater Neuroticism, lower Conscientiousness, lower Western media exposure, greater local media exposure, lower financial security, and younger age were associated with greater breast size dissatisfaction across nations. in addition, greater absolute breast size dissatisfaction was associated with greater weight and appearance dissatisfaction, poorer breast awareness, and poorer psychological well-being across nations. These results indicate that breast size dissatisfaction is a global public health concern linked to women's psychological and physical well-being. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. AimPlant species continue to be moved outside of their native range by human activities. Here, we aim to determine whether, once introduced, plants assimilate into native communities or whether they aggregate, thus forming mosaics of native‐ and alien‐rich communities. Alien species might aggregate in their non‐native range owing to shared habitat preferences, such as their tendency to establish in high‐biomass, species‐poor areas.LocationTwenty‐two herbaceous grasslands in 14 countries, mainly in the temperate zone.Time period2012?2016.Major taxa studiedPlants.MethodsWe used a globally coordinated survey. Within this survey, we found 46 plant species, predominantly from Eurasia, for which we had co‐occurrence data in their native and non‐native ranges. We tested for differences in co‐occurrence patterns of 46 species between their native (home) and non‐native (away) range. We also tested whether species had similar habitat preferences, by testing for differences in total biomass and species richness of the patches that species occupy in their native and non‐native ranges.ResultsWe found the same species to show different patterns of association depending on whether they were in their native or non‐native range. Alien species were negatively associated with native species; instead, they aggregated with other alien species in species‐poor, high‐biomass communities in their non‐native range compared with their native range.Main conclusionsThe strong differences between the native (home) and non‐native (away) range in species co‐occurrence patterns are evidence that the way in which species associate with resident communities in their non‐native range is not species dependent, but is instead a property of being away from their native range. These results thus highlight that species might undergo important ecological changes when introduced away from their native range. This is largely due to the lack of a large offline gold-standard benchmark of relevant documents that cover a variety of research fields such that newly developed literature search techniques can be compared, improved and translated into practice. To overcome this bottleneck, we have established the RElevant LIterature SearcH consortium consisting of more than 1500 scientists from 84 countries, who have collectively annotated the relevance of over 180 000 PubMed-listed articles with regard to their respective seed (input) article/s. The majority of annotations were contributed by highly experienced, original authors of the seed articles. The collected data cover 76% of all unique PubMed Medical Subject Headings descriptors. No systematic biases were observed across different experience levels, research fields or time spent on annotations. More importantly, annotations of the same document pairs contributed by different scientists were highly concordant. We further show that the three representative baseline methods used to generate recommended articles for evaluation (Okapi Best Matching 25, Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency and PubMed Related Articles) had similar overall performances. Additionally, we found that these methods each tend to produce distinct collections of recommended articles, suggesting that a hybrid method may be required to completely capture all relevant articles. The established database server located at https://relishdb.ict.griffith.edu.au is freely available for the downloading of annotation data and the blind testing of new methods. We expect that this benchmark will be useful for stimulating the development of new powerful techniques for title and title/abstract-based search engines for relevant articles in biomedical research. International audience; A thermo-responsive end-cap based on a retro-Diels-Alder and subsequent furan elimination reaction was developed. It was used to cap poly(ethyl glyoxylate), allowing end-to-end depolymerization upon thermal triggering. Using a multifunctional derivative for the preparation of block copolymers, thermo-responsive micelles and vesicles were prepared and shown to disassemble upon heating. Thermal degradation could also be triggered indirectly by magnetic field hyperthermia after incorporation of iron oxide nanoparticles into the assemblies.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2017-01-01 This paper uses Hope Olson's concept of the power to name to explore the terminological practices of the LGBTQ community in the Cariri region of Brazil in the years between 2006 and 2013. LGBTQ communities can seize back the power to name, traditionally exerted by a heteronormative society upon marginalized groups, by organizing their cultural and practical knowledge from within and by exercising the power to name themselves and their specific domains and cultural practices. The study showed that knowledge organization-the act of defining entities and categories and assigning specific names to them-is a gesture of self-empowerment on many different levels. The power of self-naming in this LGBTQ community is a polyhedron in which some facets are frequent, such as the power to empower or affirm an identity. On the one hand, the names and categories break through gender, geographical and temporal specificity to embrace terms, names, and idioms drawn from a range of different countries, traditions, languages, and time periods. On the other hand, these names and categories work to reinforce and affirm the geographical and cultural specificity of the Cariri region itself, embedding its pride and self-affirmation within the varied languages and heteronormative history of Portuguese colonization in that region. In selecting terms and categories to name, organize, and celebrate their identities, the LGBTQ people of Cariri have taken the power to name: not as information intermediaries striving for objectivity and neutrality but as committed members of a marginalized but vital community. Background: Elevated plasma homocysteine is a risk factor for Alzheimer disease, but the relevance of homocysteine lowering to slow the rate of cognitive aging is uncertain.\ud \ud Objective: The aim was to assess the effects of treatment with B vitamins compared with placebo, when administered for several years, on composite domains of cognitive function, global cognitive function, and cognitive aging.\ud \ud Design: A meta-analysis was conducted by using data combined from 11 large trials in 22,000 participants. Domain-based z scores (for memory, speed, and executive function and a domain-composite score for global cognitive function) were available before and after treatment (mean duration: 2.3 y) in the 4 cognitive-domain trials (1340 individuals); Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE)–type tests were available at the end of treatment (mean duration: 5 y) in the 7 global cognition trials (20,431 individuals).\ud \ud Results: The domain-composite and MMSE-type global cognitive function z scores both decreased with age (mean ± SE: −0.054 ± 0.004 and −0.036 ± 0.001/y, respectively). Allocation to B vitamins lowered homocysteine concentrations by 28% in the cognitive-domain trials but had no significant effects on the z score differences from baseline for individual domains or for global cognitive function (z score difference: 0.00; 95% CI: −0.05, 0.06). Likewise, allocation to B vitamins lowered homocysteine by 26% in the global cognition trials but also had no significant effect on end-treatment MMSE-type global cognitive function (z score difference: −0.01; 95% CI: −0.03, 0.02). Overall, the effect of a 25% reduction in homocysteine equated to 0.02 y (95% CI: −0.10, 0.13 y) of cognitive aging per year and excluded reductions of >1 mo per year of treatment.\ud \ud Conclusion: Homocysteine lowering by using B vitamins had no significant effect on individual cognitive domains or global cognitive function or on cognitive aging.

High-precision stable Ba isotope ratios are reported in a variety of terrestrial samples, undifferentiated primitive meteorites, and calcium–aluminum-rich inclusions (CAIs) from the Allende chondrite. All whole-rock terrestrial and meteorite samples are isotopically indistinguishable at a 50 parts per million (ppm) level per atomic mass unit (amu). Three CAIs are isotopically light, with δ138/137Ba (permil deviation of the 138Ba/137Ba ratio from a terrestrial standard) values down to − 0.6‰ compared to whole-rock meteorites, whereas the matrix is enriched in heavy isotopes (δ138/137Ba: + 0.2‰). Similar light isotope enrichments in CAIs have been previously observed for Eu, Sr, and Ca, while for most other elements CAIs are enriched in the heavier isotopes (e.g. Mg, Fe). Kinetic isotopic fractionation is a possible explanation for the enrichment in the lightest isotopes, either by condensation from a vapor phase enriched in light isotopes by kinetic effects or by kinetic fractionation during non-equilibrium condensation of an undercooled gas as suggested for Ca isotopes. However, the common property of Ba, Eu, and Sr is that they all have a low first ionization potential. We suggest that electromagnetic sorting of ionized species in the early Solar System is a possible alternative mechanism to explain the depletion in heavy isotopes observed in refractory inclusions for those elements.

As a polymorphic species, C. albicans is capable of switching between yeast and hyphal forms, causing an array of mucosal and disseminated infections with high mortality. While the yeast form is most commonly associated with systemic disease, the hyphae are more adept at adhering to and penetrating host tissue and are therefore frequently observed in mucosal fungal infections, most commonly oral candidiasis. The formation of a saliva-derived protein pellicle on the mucosa surface can provide protection against C. albicans on oral epithelial cells, and narrow information is available on the mucosal pellicle composition. Histatins are one of the most abundant salivary proteins and presents antifungal and antibacterial activities against many species of the oral microbiota, however, its presence has never been studied in oral mucosa pellicle. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of histatin 5 to protect the Human Oral Epithelium against C. albicans adhesion. Human Oral Epithelial Tissues (HOET) were incubated with PBS containing histatin 5 for 2 h, followed by incubation with C. albicans for 1 h at 37 degrees C. The tissues were then washed several times in PBS, transferred to fresh RPMI and incubated for 16 h at 37 degrees C at 5% CO2. HOET were then prepared for histopathological analysis using light microscopy. In addition, the TUNEL assay was employed to evaluate the apoptosis of epithelial cells using fluorescent microscopy. HOET pre-incubated with histatin 5 showed a lower rate of C. albicans growth and cell apoptosis when compared to the control groups (HOET alone and HOET incubated with C. albicans). The data suggest that the coating with histatin 5 is able to reduce C. albicans colonization on epithelial cell surfaces and also protect the basal cell layers from undergoing apoptosis. Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP) Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq) Acetylcholine (ACh) plays a crucial role in physiological responses of both the central and the peripheral nervous system. Moreover, ACh was described as an anti-inflammatory mediator involved in the suppression of exacerbated innate response and cytokine release in various organs. However, the specific contributions of endogenous release ACh for inflammatory responses in the lung are not well understood. To address this question we have used mice with reduced levels of the vesicular acetylcholine transporter (VAChT), a protein required for ACh storage in secretory vesicles. VAChT deficiency induced airway inflammation with enhanced TNF-alpha and IL-4 content, but not IL-6, IL-13 and IL-10 quantified by ELISA. Mice with decreased levels of VAChT presented increased collagen and elastic fibers deposition in airway walls which was consistent with an increase in inflammatory cells positive to MMP-9 and TIMP-1 in the lung. in vivo lung function evaluation showed airway hyperresponsiveness to methacholine in mutant mice. the expression of nuclear factor-kappa B (p65-NF-kappa B) in lung of VAChT-deficient mice were higher than in wild-type mice, whereas a decreased expression of janus-kinase 2 (JAK2) was observed in the lung of mutant animals. Our findings show the first evidence that cholinergic deficiency impaired lung function and produce local inflammation. Our data supports the notion that cholinergic system modulates airway inflammation by modulation of JAK2 and NF-kappa B pathway. We proposed that intact cholinergic pathway is necessary to maintain the lung homeostasis. International audience; Nano-assemblies prepared from glycosylated macromolecules are promising systems for modulating or mimicking the interactions between natural carbohydrates and their receptors. In the current work, polyester dendrons bearing focal point alkynes and peripheral C-linked [small alpha]-galactose moieties were synthesized and coupled to helical poly([gamma]-benzyl-l-glutamate) (PBLG) to afford synthetic linear-dendritic glycopolypeptides. Both the dendrimer generation and the length of the PBLG were varied to provide a small library of amphiphiles with hydrophilic mass fractions ranging from 0.07 to 0.54. The self-assembly of the copolymers in water using a solvent exchange method was optimized and studied in detail. While the linear-dendritic copolymers composed of lower generation dendrons tended to aggregate, a copolymer composed of a 4th generation galactose-functionalized dendron and PBLG with a degree of polymerization of 28 formed micellar nano-assemblies whose size could be tuned by varying the self-assembly process. Overall, this study provides new insights into the effects of polymer architecture on self-assembly properties, while at the same time introducing a new platform for the preparation of bioactive nanoparticles.

The development of stimuli-responsive materials is of significant interest for many applications including drug delivery, medical imaging, sensors, and microfluidic devices. Among the available stimuli, light is particularly attractive as it can be applied with high spatial and temporal resolution. We describe here the synthesis of amphiphilic triblock copolymers composed of poly(ethylene glycol) and a hydrophobic block containing o-nitrobenzyl esters throughout the backbone using copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition chemistry. These materials were designed to have a high weight fraction of the hydrophobic block to favour nonmicellar aggregates. The self-assembly in water was studied using nanoprecipitation and the resulting assemblies were characterized by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. Under optimized conditions, it was possible to prepare polymer vesicles, commonly referred to as polymersomes, with diameters of approximately 100 nm. The degradation of these materials in response to UV light was studied by spectroscopy, light scattering, and electron microscopy, demonstrating that the vesicles were broken down. These results suggest the potential of these materials for applications such as encapsulation and release.

Gilead Sciences Chronic infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a leading indicator for liver disease. New treatment options are becoming available, and there is a need to characterize the epidemiology and disease burden of HCV. Data for prevalence, viremia, genotype, diagnosis and treatment were obtained through literature searches and expert consensus for 16 countries. for some countries, data from centralized registries were used to estimate diagnosis and treatment rates. Data for the number of liver transplants and the proportion attributable to HCV were obtained from centralized databases. Viremic prevalence estimates varied widely between countries, ranging from 0.3% in Austria, England and Germany to 8.5% in Egypt. the largest viremic populations were in Egypt, with 6358000 cases in 2008 and Brazil with 2106000 cases in 2007. the age distribution of cases differed between countries. in most countries, prevalence rates were higher among males, reflecting higher rates of injection drug use. Diagnosis, treatment and transplant levels also differed considerably between countries. Reliable estimates characterizing HCV-infected populations are critical for addressing HCV-related morbidity and mortality. There is a need to quantify the burden of chronic HCV infection at the national level. Gilead Sciences The number of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections is projected to decline while those with advanced liver disease will increase. A modeling approach was used to forecast two treatment scenarios: (i) the impact of increased treatment efficacy while keeping the number of treated patients constant and (ii) increasing efficacy and treatment rate. This analysis suggests that successful diagnosis and treatment of a small proportion of patients can contribute significantly to the reduction of disease burden in the countries studied. the largest reduction in HCV-related morbidity and mortality occurs when increased treatment is combined with higher efficacy therapies, generally in combination with increased diagnosis. With a treatment rate of approximately 10%, this analysis suggests it is possible to achieve elimination of HCV (defined as a >90% decline in total infections by 2030). However, for most countries presented, this will require a 3-5 fold increase in diagnosis and/or treatment. Thus, building the public health and clinical provider capacity for improved diagnosis and treatment will be critical. Gilead Sciences The disease burden of hepatitis C virus (HCV) is expected to increase as the infected population ages. A modelling approach was used to estimate the total number of viremic infections, diagnosed, treated and new infections in 2013. in addition, the model was used to estimate the change in the total number of HCV infections, the disease progression and mortality in 2013-2030. Finally, expert panel consensus was used to capture current treatment practices in each country. Using today's treatment paradigm, the total number of HCV infections is projected to decline or remain flat in all countries studied. However, in the same time period, the number of individuals with late-stage liver disease is projected to increase. This study concluded that the current treatment rate and efficacy are not sufficient to manage the disease burden of HCV. Thus, alternative strategies are required to keep the number of HCV individuals with advanced liver disease and liver-related deaths from increasing. International audience; The 23 km-diameter well-preserved Haughton impact structure shows a rather unique combination of a positive magnetic anomaly with a negative gravity anomaly over the center of its central uplift. Using a new ground magnetic dataset and several modeling approaches, we investigate the properties and geometry of its central magnetized source. Our results confirm that a km-sized magnetic body with a narrow near-surface extension is necessary to account for the anomaly. Additional measurements of rock magnetic properties of samples of all lithologies encountered in and outside the crater show that the target sedimentary rocks and the vast majority of the Precambrian basement rocks cannot be the source of the magnetic anomaly. While in larger impact structures such magnetic anomalies are often explained by magmatic mafic intrusions or highly magnetic glass lenses in the impact melt rocks, we propose that impact-generated hydrothermal activity enhanced the magnetization of the highly-porous unmelted uplifted basement rocks. Such a process may be considered for the interpretation of the geophysical signature of planetary impact craters.

ObjectiveTo investigate the responsiveness of the Brazilian version of the Western Ontario Rotator Cuff Index (WORC) and compare it with the Disabilities of At-tit, Shoulder and Hand questionnaire (DASH), the University of California Los Angeles Shoulder Rating Scale (UCLA), and the Short-Form 36 questionnaire (SF-36) in patients with rotator cliff disorders.MethodsThe four questionnaires were administered to 30 patients tit baseline and 3 months after treatment (physiotherapy or surgery). The patients were divided into two groups: those who improved after treatment (n=20) and those who did not (n=10) based oil an anchor-based strategy to distinguish between the two groups and assess responsiveness.
