Abstract: International audience, Efficiently constructing the K-Nearest Neighbor Graph (K-NNG) of large and high dimensional datasets is crucial for many applications with feature-rich objects, such as images or other multimedia content. In this paper we investigate the use of high dimensional hashing methods for efficiently approximating the K-NNG, notably in distributed environments. We first discuss the importance of balancing issues on the performance of such approaches and show why the baseline approach using Locality Sensitive Hashing does not perform well. Our new KNN-join method is based on RMMH, a recently introduced hash function family based on randomly trained classifiers. We show that the resulting hash tables are much more balanced and that the number of resulting collisions can be greatly reduced without degrading quality. We further improve the load balancing of our distributed approach by designing a parallelized local join algorithm, implemented within the MapReduce framework.

Abstract: International audience; The current rise of Open Science and Reproducibility in the Life Sciences requires the creation of rich, machine-actionable metadata in order to better share and reuse biological digital resources such as datasets, bioinformatics tools, training materials, etc. For this purpose, FAIR principles have been defined for both data and metadata and adopted by large communities, leading to the definition of specific metrics. However, automatic FAIRness assessment is still difficult because computational evaluations frequently require technical expertise and can be time-consuming. As a first step to address these issues, we propose FAIR-Checker , a web-based tool to assess the FAIRness of metadata presented by digital resources. FAIR-Checker offers two main facets: a “Check” module providing a thorough metadata evaluation and recommendations, and an “Inspect” module which assists users in improving metadata quality and therefore the FAIRness of their resource. FAIR-Checker leverages Semantic Web standards and technologies such as SPARQL queries and SHACL constraints to automatically assess FAIR metrics. Users are notified of missing, necessary, or recommended metadata for various resource categories. We evaluate FAIR-Checker in the context of improving the FAIRification of individual resources, through better metadata, as well as analyzing the FAIRness of more than 25 thousand bioinformatics software descriptions.

Abstract: Background Protozoan parasites are known to attach specific and diverse group of proteins to their plasma membrane via a GPI anchor. In malaria parasites, GPI-anchored proteins (GPI-APs) have been shown to play an important role in host–pathogen interactions and a key function in host cell invasion and immune evasion. Because of their immunogenic properties, some of these proteins have been considered as malaria vaccine candidates. However, identification of all possible GPI-APs encoded by these parasites remains challenging due to their sequence diversity and limitations of the tools used for their characterization. Methods The FT-GPI software was developed to detect GPI-APs based on the presence of a hydrophobic helix at both ends of the premature peptide. FT-GPI was implemented in C ++and applied to study the GPI-proteome of 46 isolates of the order Haemosporida. Using the GPI proteome of Plasmodium falciparum strain 3D7 and Plasmodium vivax strain Sal-1, a heuristic method was defined to select the most sensitive and specific FT-GPI software parameters. Results FT-GPI enabled revision of the GPI-proteome of P. falciparum and P. vivax, including the identification of novel GPI-APs. Orthology- and synteny-based analyses showed that 19 of the 37 GPI-APs found in the order Haemosporida are conserved among Plasmodium species. Our analyses suggest that gene duplication and deletion events may have contributed significantly to the evolution of the GPI proteome, and its composition correlates with speciation. Conclusion FT-GPI-based prediction is a useful tool for mining GPI-APs and gaining further insights into their evolution and sequence diversity. This resource may also help identify new protein candidates for the development of vaccines for malaria and other parasitic diseases.

Abstract: International audience; Although uranium–cerium dioxides are frequently used as a surrogate material for (U,Pu)O2−δ nuclear fuels, there is currently no reliable data regarding the oxygen stoichiometry and redox speciation of the cations in such samples. In order to fill this gap, this manuscript details a synchrotron study of highly homogeneous (U,Ce)O2±δ sintered samples prepared by a wet-chemistry route. HERFD-XANES spectroscopy led to determining accurately the O/M ratios (with M = U + Ce). Under a reducing atmosphere (pO2 ≈ 6 × 10–29 atm at 650 °C), the oxides were found to be close to O/M = 2.00, while the O/M ratio varied with the sintering conditions under argon (pO2 ≈ 3 × 10–6 atm at 650 °C). They globally appeared to be hyperstoichiometric (i.e., O/M > 2.00) with the departure from the dioxide stoichiometry decreasing with both the cerium content in the sample and the sintering temperature. Nevertheless, such a deviation from the ideal O/M = 2.00 ratio was found to generate only moderate structural disorder from EXAFS data at the U-L3 edge as all the samples retained the fluorite-type structure of the UO2 and CeO2 parent compounds. The determination of accurate lattice parameters owing to S-PXRD measurements led to complementing the data reported in the literature by various authors. These data were consistent with an empirical relation linking the unit cell parameter, the chemical composition, and the O/M stoichiometry, showing that the latter can be evaluated simply within a ± 0.02 uncertainty

Abstract: International audience; Aqueous batteries are regaining interest, thanks to the extended working stability voltage window in a highly concentrated electrolyte, namely the water-in-salt electrolyte. A solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) forms on the negative electrode to prevent water access to the electrode surface. However, we further reported that the formed SEI layer was not uniform on the surface of the glassy carbon electrode. The SEI after passivation will also show degradation during the remaining time of open-circuit voltage (OCV); hence, it calls for a more stable passivation layer to cover the electrode surface. Here, a surface modification was successfully achieved via artificial diazonium grafting using monomers, such as poly(ethylene glycol), α-methoxy, ω-allyloxy (PEG), and allyl glycidyl cyclocarbonate (AGC), on glassy carbon. Physical and electrochemical measurements indicated that the hydrophobic layer composed of PEG or AGC species was well grafted on the electrode surface. The grafted hydrophobic coatings could protect the electrode surface from the water molecules in the bulk electrolyte and then suppress the free water decomposition (from LSV) but still migrating lithium ions. Furthermore, multiple cycles of CV with one-hour resting OCV identified the good stability of the hydrophobic grafting layer, which is a highlight compared with our precious work. These findings relying on the diazonium grafting design may offer a new strategy to construct a stable artificial SEI layer that can well protect the electrode surface from the free water molecule.

Abstract: International audience; This work reports on the synthesis of hard carbon spheres (HCS) and the impact of the pyrolysis temperature (1500 to 1900 °C) on the properties of HC and its relationship with the electrochemical performance in potassium-ion batteries (KIBs). Comparison with commercial graphite performance is provided as well. Spherical morphology, disordered structure, and low surface area were obtained for the HCSs. Most properties (interlayer space, active surface area, and oxygen-based functional groups) were found to decrease with increasing pyrolysis temperature, except for the helium density and closed porosity, which increase. However, graphite presents a flake-like morphology with a larger particle size, a higher helium density, an ordered structure with a smaller interlayer distance, and no closed pores. Electrochemical tests in a half-cell vs K+/K showed that HCSs perform better than graphite with higher initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) and better specific capacities. The HCSs pyrolyzed at 1500 and 1700 °C exhibit the best initial Coulombic efficiency, ICEs of 54 and 62%, and specific capacities of 254 and 247 mAh g–1 (C/20, 11.5 mA g–1), respectively. The ICE is affected by multiple surface and bulk parameters but also by electrolyte formulation (67% for 0.8 M KFSI vs 62% for 0.8 M KPF6). The capacity is governed by diffusive phenomena, and a larger interlayer graphitic spacing and defects favor a better insertion of K ions. Closed pores did not lead to an improvement in capacity. Furthermore, HCSs exhibit significantly better capacity retention (97%) than graphite (84%), especially when cycled at high current rates (up to 10C depotassiation rate).

Abstract: In this paper we discretize the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the framework of finite element exterior calculus. We make use of the Lamb identity to rewrite the equations into a vorticity-velocity-pressure form which fits into the de Rham complex of minimal regularity. We propose a discretization on a large class of finite elements, including arbitrary order polynomial spaces readily available in many libraries. The main advantage of this discretization is that the divergence of the fluid velocity is pointwise zero at the discrete level. This exactness ensures pressure robustness. We focus the analysis on a class of linearized equations for which we prove well-posedness and provide a priori error estimates. Abstract: International audience; Oxides derived from the ReO3 structure, such as bronzes or Wadsley-Roth phases, have re-emerged from the past as they offer very attractive properties as negative electrodes for high-power Li-ion batteries. Here, we revisit the hexagonal bronze Cs0.5Nb2.5W2.5O14 and its protonated H0.25Cs0.25Nb2.5W2.5O14 derivative, which was newly obtained after ion exchange. A panel of characterization techniques (HAADF-STEM imaging, EDX mapping, and XRD) revealed a specific cation ordering in the material and a preferential ion exchange in the heptagonal tunnels of this oxide. When used as Li-ion battery electrodes, H0.25Cs0.25Nb2.5W2.5O14 exhibits higher specific capacities as well as better capacity retention at high currents than Cs0.5Nb2.5W2.5O14. The protonated phase provides specific capacities of 132 and 111 mAh center dot g-1 at, respectively, 0.02 and 0.2 A center dot g-1. Kinetic analysis reveals that the good capacity at a high rate is due to favorable diffusion of lithium ions into the tunnels of H0.25Cs0.25Nb2.5W2.5O14. In addition, using in situ XRD, a solid solution mechanism occurring during lithium insertion was proposed, as well as the different lithiation sites of the material.

Abstract: International audience; Potassium vanadium oxyfluoride phosphate of composition KVPO4F0.5O0.5 was modified by a carbon coating to enhance its electrochemical performance. Two distinct methods were used, first, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) using acetylene gas as a carbon precursor and second, an aqueous route using an abundant, cheap, and green precursor (chitosan) followed by a pyrolysis step. The formation of a 5 to 7 nm-thick carbon coating was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy and it was found to be more homogeneous in the case of CVD using acetylene gas. Indeed, an increase of the specific surface area of one order of magnitude, low content of C sp2, and residual oxygen surface functionalities were observed when the coating was obtained using chitosan. Pristine and carbon-coated materials were compared as positive electrode materials in potassium half-cells cycled at a C/5 (C = 26.5 mA g–1) rate within a potential window of 3 to 5 V vs K+/K. The formation by CVD of a uniform carbon coating with the limited presence of surface functions was shown to improve the initial coulombic efficiency up to 87% for KVPFO4F0.5O0.5-C2H2 and to mitigate electrolyte decomposition. Thus, performance at high C-rates such as 10 C was significantly improved, with ∼50% of the initial capacity maintained after 10 cycles, whereas a fast capacity loss is observed for the pristine material.

Abstract: International audience; Nanometer-sized anions, like polyoxometalates and borate clusters, bind to nonionic hydrated matter driven by the chaotropic effect, which arises from the favorable dehydration of the ions. Herein, we evaluate the adsorption and activity coefficient of the superchaotropic Keggin polyoxometalate SiW12O404– (SiW) on nonionic surfactant (C8E4) micelles by modeling small-angle X-ray and neutron-scattering spectra. Neither hard sphere nor electrostatic repulsion models reproduce the experimental activity coefficient of adsorbed SiW ions on the micelles. However, the activity and binding of SiW on the micelles is well-described by a Langmuir adsorption isotherm. These results imply that adsorbed SiW ions are non-interacting and “create” around themselves adsorption sites on the micelle. The temperature dependence of the adsorption constant showed that the SiW adsorption is enthalpically driven and entropically unfavorable, in line with the typical chaotropic thermochemical signature. The adsorption enthalpy can be split into an electrostatic term and a water-recovery term to evaluate and qualitatively predict the superchaotropicity of a nanoion.

Abstract: International audience; Yield reduction over the years is a phenomenon that affects many fruit tree species, including hazel (Corylus avellana). Studying plant architecture could provide useful information for improving crop management, such as pruning, to reduce the impact of yield reductions. This study aimed to compare the relationship between bud composition and shoot length in hazel shoots. The experiment was carried out in January 2020 and 2021 in Deruta, Perugia (Italy). In 2020, 120 1-year-old shoots of C. avellana 'Tonda di Giffoni' were sampled. In 2021, the same observations were performed on lateral and apical 1-year-old shoots that had burst from parental buds in spring 2020. Depending on its length, each shoot was sorted into four categories: short (Sh) when shorter than 5 cm, medium (Me) when between 5 and 20 cm, long (Lo) when between 20 and 40 cm, and very long (VLo) when longer than 40 cm. For each shoot, shoot length, axillary and apical bud fate was recorded at each node: vegetative bud, latent bud, catkin, and mixed bud (V, B, C, and M, respectively). Percentage of lateral mixed buds was higher in longer shoots than in shorter ones while that of vegetative buds remained constant whatever the length. Fruit set, computed as the ratio between the number of nuts and the number of mixed buds, was significantly higher in Lo and VLo shoots. It was observed that the length of lateral proleptic shoots, developed in 2021, was related to the length of the bearer shoot from which it was developed. Proleptic lateral Sh shoots were the most frequent among all length categories while longer proleptic shoots (Lo and VLo) were originated only from Lo and VLo shoots. Managing tree architecture, considering a good balance between long and short shoots, and mixed and vegetative buds, could help control and prevent yield decrease in hazelnut trees.

Abstract: International audience; Objectives: To examine the association between high intakes of ultra-processed foods (UPF) and recurrence of depressive symptoms (DepS) in a Western non-Mediterranean country and its contribution to the overall diet-depression relationship.Methods: Analyses were carried out on British participants from the Whitehall II cohort. Present analyses were restricted to white participants N = 4554 (74% men, mean age = 61; SD = 5.9). UPF consumption was estimated from a 127-item food frequency questionnaire using the NOVA classification, and cumulative average of UPF intakes (g/day) over 11 years of exposure (1991/1994–2002/2004) was computed. Recurrent DepS after measurement of UPF was defined as having two or more episodes of DepS (the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) score ≥ 16 or antidepressants use) during four phases of follow-up (2002/2004–2015/2016).Results: Over the follow-up, 588 (12.9%) cases of recurrent DepS were observed. After adjusting for socio-demographic factors, health behaviours and health status, participants in top quintile of UPF intakes [mean 33% of total daily intakes in grams] had 31% higher odds of recurrent DepS (odds ratio 1.31; 95% CI 1.04–1.64) compared to participants in the four lowest quintiles of UPF [mean 18.1% of total daily intakes in grams]. Additional analyses showed that associations between adherence to several diet quality measures and recurrent DepS were partially attenuated (17–27%) by UPF intakes.Conclusion: In this British population, high intakes of ultra-processed foods were associated with increased odds of recurrent depressive symptoms and contributed to the overall diet quality-depressive symptoms association.

Abstract: International audience; Electrochemical lithium (de)intercalation in an atomic layer deposited (ALD) TiO2 anatase thin film deposited on a planar Si /Al2O3/Pt substrate is investigated by Raman spectroscopy. An initial discharge capacity of 63 µAh cm−2 µm−1 (0.5 Li+ mole−1) is reached at C/10 rate, which increases up to 77 µAh cm−2 µm−1 upon further cycles. An excellent capacity retention is achieved over at least 100 cycles, showing the good adherence of the ALD thin film. Raman spectra of LixTiO2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.5) thin film electrodes point to the nucleation of the orthorhombic lithiated titanate (LT) Li0.5TiO2 phase from x = 0.1. This LT phase coexists with tetragonal TiO2 in the 0.1 ≤ x ≤ 0.4 composition domain to be pure for x = 0.5. A fully reversible transformation from orthorhombic LT to tetragonal TiO2 is observed upon the charge. The high quality of the Raman spectra allows identifying for the first time 12 modes in the 100–800 cm−1 region for the electrochemically formed LT phase. Furthermore, an appropriate Raman spectra analysis allows a reliable and quantitative determination of the thin film composition during discharge and charge. These results illustrate Raman spectroscopy is a powerful probe to scrutinize the Li insertion/extraction mechanism in TiO2 thin films.

Abstract: Pathogens that persist in their host induce immune dysfunctions even in the absence of detectable replication. To better understand the phenotypic and functional changes that persistent infections induce in sentinel innate immune cells, we developed human PBMC-based HIV models of persistent infection. Autologous nonactivated PBMCs were cocultured with chronically infected, acutely infected, or uninfected cells and were then analyzed by unsupervised high-dimensional flow cytometry. Using this approach, we identified prevalent patterns of innate immune dysfunctions associated with persistent HIV infections that at least in part mirror immune dysfunctions observed in patients. In one or more models of chronic infection, bystander CD16+ NK cells expressing markers of activation, such as CD94, CD45RO, CD62L, CD69, CD25, and immune checkpoints PD1, Tim3, TIGIT, NKG2A and Lag3, were significantly reduced. Conversely, helper ILC subsets expressing PDL1/PDL2 were significantly enriched in chronic infection compared with either uninfected or acute infection, suggesting that chronic HIV-1 infection was associated with an inhibitory environment for bystander ILC and NK subsets. The cell-based models of persistent infection that we describe here provide versatile tools to explore the molecular mechanisms of these immune dysfunctions and unveil the contribution of innate immunity in sustaining pathogen persistence.

Abstract: The hydrogen production from photo-electrocatalytic water splitting attracts extensive attention as a direct way to convert solar energy into chemical fuels. In this work, innovative photo-anodes composed of TiO2 which has a preferable growth orientation [2 1 1] conjugated with PEDOT as bi-layers are prepared by a dry process strategy, combining oxidative and metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Pure anatase, dendritic TiO2 films of variable thickness are obtained at 500 °C by varying the deposition time. Increase of films thickness from 474 to 2133 nm results in morphologies that evolve from dense and angular structures to isolated and nanostructured tree-like columns with a concomitant decrease of the charge transfer resistance due to the enhancement of active facets of anatase structure. The PEDOT/TiO2 bi-layer with an overall thickness of 1350 nm and a 50 nm thick upper-PEDOT layer exhibits the highest photocurrent response (0.26 mA cm−2 at 1.8 V/RHE), a fast photocurrent response under illumination, and the best hydrogen yield up to 4.1 µmol cm-2h−1 with electronic conductivity being three order of magnitude higher than pristine TiO2

Abstract: International audience; For over a decade, 3D objects are an increasingly popular form of media. It has become necessary and urgent to secure them during their transmission or archiving. In this article, we propose a new method to obtain a watermarked 3D object from high-capacity data hiding in the encrypted domain. Based on the homomorphic properties of the Paillier cryptosystem, our proposed method allows us to embed several secret messages in the encrypted domain with a high-capacity. These messages can be extracted in the plain-text domain after the 3D object decryption. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to propose a data hiding method in the encrypted domain where the high-capacity watermark is conserved in the plain-text domain after the 3D object is decrypted. The encryption and the data hiding in the encrypted domain are format compliant and without size expansion, despite the use of the Paillier cryptosystem. Each time a new message is embedded in the encrypted domain, flags are added in order to indicate which blocks are still available for the embedding of additional messages. After the decryption of a watermarked encrypted 3D object, our method produces a watermarked 3D object which is visually very similar to the original 3D object. From the decrypted watermarked 3D object, we can then extract all the embedded messages directly in the plain-text domain, without the need for an auxiliary file. Moreover, large keys are used, rending our method secure for real-life applications.

Abstract: We use an in-house code based on polyhedral representation of particle shapes and a rigorous contact detection algorithm to investigate the evolution of orthotropic elastic response of regular polyhedral and spherical particle packings. Our DEM algorithm is able to distinguish different types of contact (face-face, face-edge, face-vertex, edge-edge, edge-vertex, vertex-vertex). A linear force law based on normal overlaps at the contact points between particles is implemented and face-face and face-edge contacts are represented by at least three and two contact points, respectively. Dense and isotropic packings of polyhedral particles with different numbers of faces were prepared by isostatic compaction. Then, they were sheared under tri-periodic boundary conditions for different values of interparticle friction coefficient. During shearing, 16 instances corresponding to a wide variety of contact orientation anisotropies were stored and relaxed a static state before applying two distinct strain probes to measure the five independent elastic moduli of the sample. By comparing the simulation data with effective medium theory (EMT), our results clearly show that the elastic moduli are functions of two microstructural parameters: 1) a constraint number that accounts for contact types (face-face and face-edge contacts between polyhedra), and 2) the contact orientation anisotropy. The proposed expression of elastic moduli isolates the direct effect of particle shape, related to the nonaffine particle displacement field from the indirect effect, related to the granular microstructure. The effect of particle shape appears at two levels: on the one hand, through four parameters in the proposed expression, which are independent of friction coefficient, and, on the other hand, through the microstructure reflected by the values of constraint number and fabric anisotropy, which depend on both particle shape and interparticle friction coefficient.

Abstract: International audience; Herein, we report a direct recycling process of the spent LiFePO4 by direct room temperature chemical lithiation. A fine characterization of a recovered LFP cathode from a spent commercial battery demonstrates that the end of life of the battery is mainly due to the lithium loss, while the structure of the LFP cathode material is globally preserved. It is shown here that such a cathode can be efficiently recovered by direct lithiation in solution using LiI in different solvents (acetonitrile, ethanol, cyclohexane, methanol, DMSO and propan-1,2-ol) with optimized experimental parameters. The best electrochemical performance is obtained with ethanol, one of the greenest and cheapest solvents, without any additional heat treatment. More interestingly, the regeneration of LFP can be achieved directly with the material cast onto its aluminum collector, which paves the way to more efficient recycling preserving the whole electrode formulation and avoiding a new electrode casting. The chemically lithiated LFP cathode in ethanol exhibits a full reversible capacity of ∼168 mAh/g vs. Li metal with a stable coulombic efficiency exceeding 98% for 25 cycles. In addition, this recovery process produces regenerated electrodes showing good electrochemical performance also at high current density.

Abstract: International audience; We present a general theoretical framework designed to interpret the effect of centrifugation of ternary fluids that exhibit weak aggregation. The model includes a buoyancy term with thermodynamic description given by a Flory-Huggins model of ternary systems containing a hydrotrope. The system octanol-ethanol-water used as a numerical example is one of several ternary systems that exhibit dynamic aggregates even far from the critical point and undergo a spontaneous emulsification upon dilution with water (Ouzo effect). The model proposes an explanation from first principles of an increased responsiveness to the centrifugal fields. We illustrate the usage of this system in intensified extraction efficiency of hydrophobic solutes that is at the basis of the dispersive liquid-liquid extraction, and show that its capabilities can be extended from analytical to continuous preparative extraction.

Abstract: International audience; Environmental pollution monitoring represents a major challenge due to the growing presence of a large and diverse number of potential contaminants. In complement to target analysis, nontarget analysis, via liquid chromatography (LC) coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), is increasingly used to provide a more comprehensive characterization of pollution. The challenge associated with this type of analysis is particularly related to the data treatment for substance identification. One of the main limitations is that all data must be manually reviewed, which is tedious and time-consuming. Machine learning algorithms aim to reproduce human behavior, and their capabilities were therefore evaluated to automatically identify substances in suspect screening approaches. After selecting the relevant features produced from LC/HRMS, seven different machine learning models were evaluated for each of the three different databases, which resulted in the selection of logistic regression (LR) and random forest (RF)-based algorithms. An interface was built to rank the identified substances and to assess the performance of the developed models. The LR model provided the best results when retention times were available. The developed LR and RF models were determined complementarily, particularly when no retention times were available. However, limitations were noticed when using a database containing different HRMS technologies.

Abstract: International audience; Climate change is most strongly felt in the polar regions of the world, with significant impacts on the species that live there. The arrival of parasites and pathogens from more temperate areas may become a significant problem for these populations, but current observations of parasite presence often lack a historical reference of prior absence. Observations in the high Arctic of the seabird tick Ixodes uriae suggested that this species expanded poleward in the last two decades in relation to climate change. As this tick can have a direct impact on the breeding success of its seabird hosts and vectors several pathogens, including Lyme disease spirochaetes, understanding its invasion dynamics is essential for predicting its impact on polar seabird populations. Here, we use population genetic data and host serology to test the hypothesis that I. uriae recently expanded into Svalbard. Both black-legged kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla) and thick-billed murres (Uria lomvia) were sampled for ticks and blood in Kongsfjorden, Spitsbergen. Ticks were genotyped using microsatellite markers and population genetic analyses were performed using data from 14 reference populations from across the tick's northern distribution. In contrast to predictions, the Spitsbergen population showed high genetic diversity and significant differentiation from reference populations, suggesting long-term isolation. Host serology also demonstrated a high exposure rate to Lyme disease spirochaetes (Bbsl). Targeted PCR and sequencing confirmed the presence of Borrelia garinii in a Spitsbergen tick, demonstrating the presence of Lyme disease bacteria in the high Arctic for the first time. Taken together, results contradict the notion that I. uriae has recently expanded into the high Arctic. Rather, this tick has likely been present for some time, maintaining relatively high population sizes and an endemic transmission cycle of Bbsl. Close future observations of population infestation/infection rates will now be necessary to relate epidemiological changes to ongoing climate modifications.

Abstract: International audience; Deep Learning (DL) applications are gaining increasing interest in the industry and academia for their outstanding computational capabilities. Indeed, they have found successful applications in various areas and domains such as avionics, robotics, automotive, medical wearable devices, gaming; some have been labeled as safety-critical, as system failures can compromise human life. Consequently, DL reliability is becoming a growing concern, and efficient reliability assessment approaches are required to meet safety constraints. This paper presents a survey of the main DL reliability assessment methodologies, focusing mainly on Fault Injection (FI) techniques used to evaluate the DL resilience. The article describes some of the most representative state-of-the-art academic and industrial works describing FI methodologies at different levels of abstraction. Finally, a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of each methodology is proposed to provide valuable guidelines for carrying out safety analyses.

Abstract: International audience; Inspired by automated DNA synthesis, electron-rich dialkoxynaphthalene (DAN) donor and electron-deficient naphthalene-tetracarboxylic diimide (NDI) acceptor phosphodiester-linked homohexamers were synthesized by the phosphoramidite method. Two types of hexamers were prepared, one with only one phosphodiester between the aromatics (i.e., DAN or NDI) and a second with two phosphodiesters around a propanediol between the aromatics, leading to the latter more flexible and more hydrophilic hexamers. The folding properties of these homohexamers alone or mixed together, in water only, were studied by UV-visible absorption spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM). AFM imaging revealed that a 1:1 mixture of hexaDAN and hexaNDI formed fibers by charge transfer donor-acceptor recognition leading to a hydrogel after drying. The organization of the resulting structures is strongly dependent on the nature of the complementary partner, leading to the formation of mono- or multilayer hydrogel networks with different compactness.

Abstract: International audience; Crystal structures can strongly deviate from bulk states when confined into nanodomains. These deviations may deeply affect properties and reactivity and then call for a close examination. In this work, we address the case where extended crystal defects spread through a whole solid and then yield an aperiodic structure and specific reactivity. We focus on iron boride, α-FeB, whose structure has not been elucidated yet, thus hindering the understanding of its properties. We synthesize the two known phases, α-FeB and β-FeB, in molten salts at 600 and 1100 °C, respectively. The experimental X-ray diffraction (XRD) data cannot be satisfactorily accounted for by a periodic crystal structure. We then model the compound as a stochastic assembly of layers of two structure types. Refinement of the powder XRD pattern by considering the explicit scattering interference of the different layers allows quantitative evaluation of the size of these domains and of the stacking faults between them. We, therefore, demonstrate that α-FeB is an intergrowth of nanometer-thick slabs of two structure types, β-FeB and CrB-type structures, in similar proportions. We finally discuss the implications of this novel structure on the reactivity of the material and its ability to perform insertion reactions by comparing the reactivities of α-FeB and β-FeB as reagents in the synthesis of a model layered material: Fe2AlB2. Using synchrotron-based in situ X-ray diffraction, we elucidate the mechanisms of the formation of Fe2AlB2. We highlight the higher reactivity of the intergrowth α-FeB in agreement with structural relationships.

Abstract: International audience; Marine sediment disposal is an important economic and environmental issue worldwide. In order to minimize these discharges and optimize resources through a circular economy approach, this study discusses the potential use of fine marine sediments without treatments as a sand substitute in the marine concrete class (XS2, C30/37). The Dreux-Gorisse method was applied to find the concrete formulation containing 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50% sediment by weight. The results show that an XS2 concrete C30/37 with a water to binder ratio of 0.55 could be designed with 10% of sediment replacement content without significantly affecting the concrete properties. However, the optimization of concrete mix design shows that marine concrete (XS2, C30/37) could be designed with 30% of sediment replacement content without significantly affecting the potential durability and the estimated lifetime of the concrete structure.

Abstract: International audience; The effects of sediment elutriate, prepared from a sediment resuspension simulation process, on the growth of bacterioplankton and of different sized phytoplankton as well as on their grazing by protozooplankton were investigated in Mediterranean coastal ecosystems during spring phytoplankton bloom. In parallel, the response of bacterioplankton, phytoplankton and protozooplankton to sediment elutriate enrichment was assessed in microcosm experiments. Elutriate addition provoked a high enrichment in nutriments of the overlying water, particularly in ammonium, dissolved organic matter but also in trace metal elements and herbicides. Overall, elutriate addition significantly increased the biomass of bacterioplankton and of total phytoplankton, but the phytoplankton size fractions responded differently to elutriate enrichment. The picophytoplankton showed a significant strong enhancement in both growth and production rates, relatively to control, while these rates significantly decreased for nano- and microphytoplankton. Accordingly, the phytoplankton size structure shifted in elutriate microcosm toward a dominance of the picophytoplankton concomitant with a significant reduction in larger size fractions. The elutriate addition caused also a clear shift in the taxonomic composition of protozooplankton, associated with a significant modification of its functional diversity, with the dominance of pico-sized cell consumers (such as aloricate ciliates, heterotrophic nanoflagellates and mixotrophic dinoflagellates) in the detriment of grazers of nano- and microphytoplankton (such as heterotrophic dinoflagellate). The protozooplankton grazing on small prey (bacterioplankton and picophytoplankton) increased, while feeding on nano- and micro-sized phytoplankton decreased after elutriate addition. These results have implication for the carbon transfer pathway, which could change from an herbivorous food web to a microbial food web, influencing so the exportation of biogenic carbon through the other trophic compartments.

Abstract: Since the emergence of graphene, we have seen several proposals for the realization of Landau lasers tunable over the terahertz frequency range. The hope was that the non-equidistance of the Landau levels from Dirac fermions would suppress the harmful non-radiative Auger recombination. Unfortunately, even with this non-equidistance an unfavorable non-radiative process persists in Landau-quantized graphene, and so far no cyclotron emission from Dirac fermions has been reported. One way to eliminate this last non-radiative process is to sufficiently modify the dispersion of the Landau levels by opening a small gap in the linear band structure. A proven example of such gapped graphene-like materials are HgTe quantum wells close to the topological phase transition. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate Landau emission from Dirac fermions in such HgTe quantum wells, where the emission is tunable by both the magnetic field and the carrier concentration. Abstract: International audience; Among candidates at the positive electrode of the next generation of Li-ion technology and even beyond post Li-ion technology as all-solid-state batteries, spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) is one of the favorites. Nevertheless, before its integration into commercial systems, challenges still remain to be tackled, especially the stabilization of interfaces with the electrolyte (liquid or solid) at high voltage. In this work, a simple, fast, and cheap process is used to prepare a homogeneous coating of Al2O3 type to modify the surface of the spinel LNMO: the supercritical fluid chemical deposition (SFCD) route. This process is, to the best of our knowledge, used for the first time in the battery field. Significantly improved performance was demonstrated vs those of bare LNMO, especially at high rates and for highly loaded electrodes.

Abstract: International audience; M-ion batteries (M = Li, Na, K ...) positive electrode materials most often operate through the reversible oxidation of transition-metal ions. In complex materials involving many transition metals or many redox centers, understanding the sequence in which they participate to the reaction is not trivial but is often necessary to explain the electrochemical properties. Mixed anion vanadium phosphates, such as KVPO4F0.5O0.5, are known to contain two different redox entities that are V3+O4F2 and V3+O5F “ionic” entities on the one hand and {V4+═O}O5 and {V4+═O}O4F “covalent” vanadyl-type units on the other hand. However, their participation to the redox mechanism occurring during the charge of this material has never been studied. Here, we use V K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy to unveil the redox mechanism of KVPO4F1–yOy (y = 0, 0.5, 1), performing data analysis via a chemometric approach. With XAS being very sensitive to the oxidation state and bond length, it was found that the ionic V3+–F units oxidize at a lower potential than the covalent {V4+═O} ones, which is surprising considering the high electronegativity of fluoride anions but is consistent with the redox potential observed for KVPO4F and KVOPO4. Further, ab initio calculations and ex situ X-ray diffraction analyses allowed an atomistic description of the redox mechanism with the sequential oxidation of the cis V site before the trans V site in KVPO4F upon charge. Finally, the complete atomically resolved redox mechanism of KVPO4F0.5O0.5 is proposed.

Abstract: International audience; In a recent work [A. Nassereddine et al., Small 2021, 17, 2104571] we reported the atomic-scale structure and dynamics of sub-4 nm sized Au nanoparticles (NPs) supported on titania in H2 at atmospheric pressure obtained by using aberration-corrected environmental transmission electron microscopy (ETEM), density functional theory (DFT) optimizations and ab initio molecular dynamic (AIMD) simulations. Our results showed unstable Au NPs losing their face-centred cubic (fcc) symmetry (from fcc to non-fcc symmetries) and revealed the drastic effect of hydrogen adsorption. In this work, we use the same approach to study the dynamics of equiatomic Au–Cu NPs in the same range of size and the results show an enhanced structural stability upon alloying by Cu. In spite of the morphology evolution from facetted to rounded shapes, the observed Au–Cu NPs are found to keep their fcc symmetry under atmospheric hydrogen pressure. AIMD simulation evidences a Cu segregation process from the sub-surface toward the upper surface layer, and a reversed segregation of Au atoms from the surface towards the sub-surface sites. The analysis of the chemical ordering in the core shows a tendency to a local chemical ordering where Au–Cu hetero-atomic bindings are favoured. The segregating Cu seems to play a major role in reducing the fluxionality of Au–Cu NPs in H2 and thus, maintaining their fcc symmetry.

Abstract: International audience; Due to their use in crypto-currencies, threshold ECDSA signatures have received much attention in recent years. Though efficient solutions now exist both for the two party, and the full threshold scenario, there is still much room for improvement, be it in terms of protocol functionality, strengthening security or further optimising efficiency. In the past few months, a range of protocols have been published, allowing for a non interactive-and hence extremely efficient-signing protocol; providing new features, such as identifiable aborts (parties can be held accountable if they cause the protocol to fail), fairness in the honest majority setting (all parties receive output or nobody does) and other properties. In some cases, security is proven in the strong simulation based model. We combine ideas from the aforementioned articles with the suggestion of Castagnos et al. (PKC 2020) to use the class group based CL framework so as to drastically reduce bandwidth consumption. Building upon this latter protocol we present a new, maliciously secure, full threshold ECDSA protocol that achieves additional features without sacrificing efficiency. Our most basic protocol boasts a non interactive signature algorithm and identifiable aborts. We also propose a more advanced variant that achieves adaptive security (for the n-out-of-n case) and proactive security. Our resulting constructions improve upon state of the art Paillier's based realizations achieving similar goals by up to a 10 factor in bandwidth consumption.

Abstract: International audience; Interfaces and their understanding/control are the key to pave the way for the development of solid-state batteries. This work focuses on the development of operando Auger cycling using an electron beam to investigate the Li/solid electrolyte (SE) interphases. To do so, the fully tunable electron gun of the Auger was applied on top of a model Li/Li6PS5Cl(Arg) stack, allowing charge build up at the Arg surface and Li+ migration from the lithium electrode followed by SE interphase formation and Li plating. Overall, it is found that (i) Li6PS5Cl is first reduced to Li2S, LiCl and Li3P while (ii) Li plating occurs almost concomitantly and (iii) proceeds until the end of the operando cycling. These results were then confirmed by operando XPS using an electron beam. Importantly, this study highlights that operando Auger is more powerful than operando XPS as it provides visual observation of the dynamics/morphology of both Li/solid electrolyte interphase formation and Li plating together with reliable chemical information. This study thus opens the door for future development of operando Auger cycling using an electron beam as a powerful approach to better understand the interfaces in solid-state batteries.

Abstract: International audience; Using a thick NMC811 (LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2) electrode as an example, we present a macro-to nanoscale 2D and 3D imaging analysis approach coupled with 4D (space + time) computational modeling to probe its degradation mechanism in a lithium-ion bat-tery cell. Particle cracking increases and contact loss between parti-cles and carbon-binder domain are observed to correlate with the cell degradation. This study unravels that the reaction heterogene-ity within the thick cathode caused by the unbalanced electron con-duction is the main cause of the battery degradation over cycling. The increased heterogeneity in the system will entail more cathode regions where the degree of active material utilization is uneven, leading to higher probabilities of particle cracking. These findings shed light on the crucial role of the electronic and ionic transporta-tion networks in the performance deterioration of the thick cathode. They also provide guidance for cathode architecture optimization and performance improvement.

36. Prussian blue analogues for potassium-ion batteries: insights into the electrochemical mechanisms

Abstract: International audience; A comprehensive description of the electrochemical mechanisms of the Prussian blue analogue (PBA) K1.67Mn0.65Fe0.35[Fe(CN)6]0.92•0.45H2O is obtained by combining several complementary ex situ and operando physicochemical characterisation techniques. This particular PBA, which shows very good electrochemical performance as a cathode material in potassium-ion batteries (PIBs), undergoes three successive redox reactions during the (de-)potassiation that are hereby identified by ex situ 57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy and operando Mn and Fe K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy. These reactions come along with notable modifications of the crystal structure, which are followed in real time by operando X-ray diffraction. The correlation of these results, interpreted with the support of chemometric methods, also reveals the limitations of this PBA, probably related to the deactivation of the Mn undergoing extensive reversible Jahn-Teller distortion during cycling as well as possible dissolution in the electrolyte. These results underline that optimisation of the chemical composition of PBAs is a crucial step towards the preparation of reliable and stable PBA-based cathodes for PIBs.

Abstract: Background and ObjectivesThe question of the long-term safety of pregnancy is a major concern in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), but its study is biased by reverse causation (women with higher disability are less likely to experience pregnancy). Using a causal inference approach, we aimed to estimate the unbiased long-term effects of pregnancy on disability and relapse risk in patients with MS and secondarily the short-term effects (during the perpartum and postpartum years) and delayed effects (occurring beyond 1 year after delivery).MethodsWe conducted an observational cohort study with data from patients with MS followed in the Observatoire Français de la Sclérose en Plaques registry between 1990 and 2020. We included female patients with MS aged 18–45 years at MS onset, clinically followed up for more than 2 years, and with ≥3 Expanded Disease Status Scale (EDSS) measurements. Outcomes were the mean EDSS score at the end of follow-up and the annual probability of relapse during follow-up. Counterfactual outcomes were predicted using the longitudinal targeted maximum likelihood estimator in the entire study population. The patients exposed to at least 1 pregnancy during their follow-up were compared with the counterfactual situation in which, contrary to what was observed, they would not have been exposed to any pregnancy. Short-term and delayed effects were analyzed from the first pregnancy of early-exposed patients (who experienced it during their first 3 years of follow-up).ResultsWe included 9,100 patients, with a median follow-up duration of 7.8 years, of whom 2,125 (23.4%) patients were exposed to at least 1 pregnancy. Pregnancy had no significant long-term causal effect on the mean EDSS score at 9 years (causal mean difference [95% CI] = 0.00 [−0.16 to 0.15]) or on the annual probability of relapse (causal risk ratio [95% CI] = 0.95 [0.93–1.38]). For the 1,253 early-exposed patients, pregnancy significantly decreased the probability of relapse during the perpartum year and significantly increased it during the postpartum year, but no significant delayed effect was found on the EDSS and relapse rate.DiscussionUsing a causal inference approach, we found no evidence of significantly deleterious or beneficial long-term effects of pregnancy on disability. The beneficial effects found in other studies were probably related to a reverse causation bias.

Abstract: International audience; Climate change is mostly driven by the increase of atmospheric CO2 concentration. It leads to an increase in ambient temperature and temperature extremes, as well as to a reduction in water availability (Box 1). Despite the apparent benefit that an increase of CO2 and ambient temperature might have on the production of plant biomass, climate change severely challenges the plant life cycle, and thus increasingly leads to food insecurity. Investigating the molecular mechanisms of plant adaptation to climate change is thus a pressing issue. This was the theme of the EMBO Workshop ‘Molecular responses of plants facing climate change’ in June 2022 in Montpellier, France. Here, we summarize some key insights presented during the conference on the investigation of molecular mechanisms of plant adaptation to environmental constraints in a changing climate.

Abstract: International audience; Since 2008, there has been a major decrease in the numbers of old and large sardines in the Gulf of Lions, which has had a major effect on regional fisheries. A bottom-up process involving a shift in diet towards smaller planktonic prey has been suggested as the main driver of this development. Yet, the reproductive capacities of the sardines have not changed, suggesting potential modifications in energy allocation trade-offs. Whether this could also affect maintenance, in particular at the end of the winter reproductive period, and explain the lower adult survival and the disappearance of older individuals remains unclear. We therefore experimentally investigated the consequences of seasonal food availability (summer vs. winter) on life-history traits and energy allocation trade-offs at the individual and population levels. Our results indicate that food resources during summer had a major effect on energy reserves and growth, limiting the maximum size and body condition reached at the end of reproduction. In addition, food restrictions during growth and/or reproduction periods led to physiological costs mediated by increased oxidative damage. Mediterranean sardines did not show any ability for compensatory growth and did not appear to be capital breeders. Instead, they displayed individual differences in coping with physiological constraints and displayed various life-history strategies regardless of food availability. We highlighted 3 main individual energy allocation strategies: (1) preferential allocation to body condition or (2) to growth, or (3) simultaneous allocation to reproduction and growth. These issues are key, as climate change is expected to favour smaller phytoplankton, which might amplify the deterioration in the condition of pelagic fish.

Abstract: International audience; Reversible chemical reactions are the most common mechanism storing electrochemical energy in M-ion batteries (M = Li, Na, K....). At the positive electrode, these transformations consist in the solid-state oxidation or reduction of transition metal ions going along with the reversible (de)intercalation of an alkali cation from the crystal structure. X-ray spectroscopies are among the most suitable tools to unveil and monitor these reactions. The interpretation of experimental spectra, however, is not trivial. This is particularly true in V-based positive electrodes since the variety of oxidation states of vanadium as well as its coordination and bonding geometries may lead to complex spectroscopic features that call for ab initio modeling to understand the spectra. Here we show not only that V L2,3-edge X-ray Raman spectra can effectively be modeled by a full ab initio approach but also that the empirically obtained Hamiltonian parameters can reproduce shape and intensity of the experimental spectra from a given coordination geometry. In a broader context, our study shows that inexpensive empirical calculations provide highly reliable information and help solve the electronic structure of transition metal oxides compounds, which governs the electrochemical behavior in M-ion batteries. The promising results shown here underline the efficiency of this strategy for X-ray spectroscopy data analysis, which can be generalized and extended to the wider family of vanadium phosphate-based polyanionic compounds. Such an approach can in principle be extended to any transition metal-based material.

Abstract: International audience; Improvements to battery performance, reliability and lifetime are essential to meet the expansive demands for energy storage. As part of this, continuous monitoring of the dynamic chemistry inside cells offers an exciting path to minimizing parasitic reactions and maximizing sustainability. Building upon recent fibre-optic/battery innovations, we report the use of operando infrared fibre evanescent wave spectroscopy to monitor electrolyte evolution in 18650 Na-ion and Li-ion cells under real working conditions. This approach enables identification of chemical species and reveals electrolyte and additive decomposition mechanisms during cycling, thereby providing important insights into the growth and nature of the solid–electrolyte interphase, the dynamics of solvation and their complex interrelations. Moreover, by directly embedding fibres within the electrode material, we demonstrate simultaneous observations of both the material structural evolution and the Na(Li) inventory changes upon cycling. This illuminating sensing method has the power to reveal the otherwise opaque chemical phenomena occurring within each key battery component.

Abstract: International audience; Background: SARS-CoV-2 infection can induce cardiac damage. Therefore, in the absence of clear data, a cardiac evaluation was recommended for athletes before returning to play after recent SARS-CoV-2 infection.Aim: To assess the proportion of anomalies detected by this cardiac screening.Methods: We reviewed the medical files of elite athletes referred for cardiac evaluation before returning to play after a non-hospitalized SARS-CoV-2 infection (based on a positive polymerase chain reaction or antigen test) from March 2020 to July 2021 in 12 French centres.Results: A total of 554 elite athletes (professional or national level) were included (median age 22 years, 72.0% male). An electrocardiogram (ECG), echocardiogram and exercise test were performed in 551 (99.5%), 497 (89.7%) and 293 (52.9%) athletes, respectively. We found anomalies with a potential link with SARS-CoV-2 infection in four ECGs (0.7%), three echocardiograms (0.6%) and three exercise tests (1.0%). Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging was performed in 34 athletes (6.1%), mostly due to abnormal first-line examinations, and was abnormal in one (2.9%). The rates of those abnormalities were not higher among athletes with cardiac symptoms or more severe forms of non-hospitalized SARS-CoV-2 infection. Only one athlete had a possible SARS-CoV-2 myocarditis and sport was temporally contraindicated. None had a major cardiac event declared during the follow-up.Conclusion: The proportion of cardiac involvement after non-hospitalized forms of SARS-CoV-2 infection in athletes are very low. Systematic cardiac screening before returning to play seems to be unnecessary.

Abstract: Architectural glazing has several advantages in terms of aesthetics and user well-being perspectives. However, they can have large impacts on heating and cooling demands and artificial lighting requirements. Ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) cushion systems present adequate insulating and transparency characteristics, and, combined with organic photovoltaic (OPV) modules, become a glazing element leading towards energy efficient buildings. The present manuscript reports on a detailed optical, thermal and electrical analysis of a 3-layer ETFE/ OPV cushion that helps the design of these glazing-type systems by providing a better understanding of their performance. Spectrophotometric optical measurements up to 50 µm allow proper estimations of an individual layer radiative behavior. As a matter of fact, these measurements feed the radiative and thermal models that aim at determining the behavior of the organic photovoltaic module as a function of its position in the cushion. Based on the organic photovoltaic module spectral response, electrical power production is estimated. Results reveal that the best configuration is the one placing the organic photovoltaic module in the outer layer, since it represents the case where the OPV module performs better due to the higher incident irradiance and the low dependency on temperature of the generated power. Abstract: International audience; Li-ion batteries are the key stones of electric vehicles, but with the emergence of solid-state Li batteries for improving autonomy and fast charging, the need for mastering the solid electrolyte (SE)/electrode material interfaces is crucial. All-solid-state-batteries (ASSBs) suffer from long-term capacity fading with enhanced decomposition reactions. So far, these reactions have not been extensively studied in Li(6)PS(5)Cl-based systems because of the complexity of overlapping degradation mechanisms. Herein, those reactions are studied in depth. We investigated their effects under various operating conditions (temperature, C-rate, voltage window), types of active materials, and with or without carbon additives. From combined resistance monitoring and impedance spectroscopy measurements, we could decouple two reactions (NMC/SE and VGCF/SE) with an inflection dependent on the cutoff potential (3.6 or 3.9 V vs Li-In/In are studied) on charge and elucidate their distinct repercussions on cycling performances. The pernicious effect of carbon additives on both the first cycle and power performances is disclosed, so as its long-term effect on capacity retention. As a mean to resolve these issues, we scrutinized the benefits of a coating layer around NMC particles to prevent high potential interactions, minimize the drastic loss of capacity observed with bare NMC, and simply propose to get rid of carbon additives. Altogether, we hope these findings provide insights and novel methodologies for designing innovative performing solid-state batteries.

Abstract: Background and ObjectiveBlood biomarkers for Alzheimer disease (AD) have consistently proven to be associated with CSF or PET biomarkers and effectively discriminate AD from other neurodegenerative diseases. Our aim was to test their utility in clinical practice, from a multicentric unselected prospective cohort where patients presented with a large spectrum of cognitive deficits or complaints.MethodsThe MEMENTO cohort enrolled 2,323 outpatients with subjective cognitive complaint (SCC) or mild cognitive impairment (MCI) consulting in 26 French memory clinics. Participants had neuropsychological assessments, MRI, and blood sampling at baseline. CSF sampling and amyloid PET were optional. Baseline blood Aβ42/40 ratio, total tau, p181-tau, and neurofilament light chain (NfL) were measured using a Simoa HD-X analyzer. An expert committee validated incident dementia cases during a 5-year follow-up period.ResultsOverall, 2,277 individuals had at least 1 baseline blood biomarker available (n = 357 for CSF subsample, n = 649 for PET subsample), among whom 257 were diagnosed with clinical AD/mixed dementia during follow-up. All blood biomarkers but total tau were mildly correlated with their equivalence in the CSF (r = 0.33 to 0.46,p< 0.0001) and were associated with amyloid-PET status (p< 0.0001). Blood p181-tau was the best blood biomarker to identify amyloid-PET positivity (area under the curve = 0.74 [95% CI = 0.69; 0.79]). Higher blood and CSF p181-tau and NfL concentrations were associated with accelerated time to AD dementia onset with similar incidence rates, whereas blood Aβ42/40 was less efficient than CSF Aβ42/40. Blood p181-tau alone was the best blood predictor of 5-year AD/mixed dementia risk (c-index = 0.73 [95% CI = 0.69; 0.77]); its accuracy was higher in patients with clinical dementia rating (CDR) = 0 (c-index = 0.83 [95% CI = 0.69; 0.97]) than in patients with CDR = 0.5 (c-index = 0.70 [95% CI = 0.66; 0.74]). A “clinical” reference model (combining demographics and neuropsychological assessment) predicted AD/mixed dementia risk with a c-index = 0.88 [95% CI = 0.86–0.91] and performance increased to 0.90 [95% CI = 0.88; 0.92] when adding blood p181-tau + Aβ42/40. A “research” reference model (clinical model + apolipoprotein E genotype and AD signature on MRI) had a c-index = 0.91 [95% CI = 0.89–0.93] increasing to 0.92 [95% CI = 0.90; 0.93] when adding blood p181-tau + Aβ42/40. Chronic kidney disease and vascular comorbidities did not affect predictive performances.DiscussionIn a clinic-based cohort of patients with SCC or MCI, blood biomarkers may be good hallmarks of underlying pathology but add little to 5-year dementia risk prediction models including traditional predictors.

Abstract: International audience; The increase in food needs due to high population growth in Niger has led to the intensification of urban agriculture and the increased use of pesticides. The objective of this study is primarily to assess the polar pesticide contamination (mainly herbi-cides) of the Niger River and its tributary, the Mekrou River, in Niger, using both grab sampling and POCIS (Polar Organic Chemical Integrative Samplers), and then to evaluate the risk to the aquatic environment. Two water sampling campaigns were carried out during the wet and dry seasons. The polar pesticides were analyzed by liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry, which allowed the identification of compounds with concentrations in the grab samples above the WHO guide values and the EU directive: diuron with 2221 ng/L (EU quality guideline: 200 ng/L), atrazine with 742 ng/L (EU quality guideline: 600 ng/L) and acetochlor with 238 ng/L (EU quality guideline: 100 ng/L). The risk assess-ment study indicated that diuron and atrazine present a high risk for the aquatic environment during the wet season. The main source of water contamination is the intensive use of pesticides in urban agriculture near the city of Niamey, and the intensive cotton farming in the Benin. Moreover, the surveys (30 producers interviewed) showed that 70% of the pesticides used are not approved by the Interstate Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel (CILSS) and some are prohibited in Niger. The inventory of pesticides sold in the zone showed that active ingredients used by producers are 48% insecticides, 45% herbicides, and 7% fungicides.

Abstract: International audience; This article focuses on understanding the link between the morphologies and specific surfaces of well-known birnessites with electrochemical performance by studying the surface reactivity of each material. Our study is especially dedicated to show the impact of the material’s surface on the faradaic and pseudocapacitive mechanisms involved in the energy storage of the supercapacitors. For this purpose, a multiscale study was carried out on three birnessites, nonprotonated (Na-MnO2, K-MnO2 and HT-MnO2) and protonated (HNa-MnO2, HK-MnO2 and HHT-MnO2), to ensure the investigation of the surface reactivity on birnessites for each step of the nanocomposite conception based on birnessite. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to characterize the morphology of the materials. Coupling X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and SO2 gas probe adsorption are especially devoted to determine the nature of active sites and the electronic structure of the material’s surface. Thus, we provide evidence that the surface properties, such as specific surface area and surface active sites, are linked to the electrochemical mechanism (faradaic or pseudocapacitive) of storage depending on the scan rate. We show that the site concentration determined by XPS can be directly linked to the contribution of the pseudocapacitive mechanism observed at low and moderate scan rates. As the capacitive mechanism is discriminated at a high scan rate, its contribution is related to the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface. The largest specific surface is obtained for HK-MnO2 with its eroded veils (85 m2/g). Redox reactivity was evaluated from XPS quantification comparing the S/M values, i.e., atom % of S/atom % of Mn. HT-MnO2, its protonated derivative HHT-MnO2, and Na-MnO2 exhibit the largest redox reactivity, with, respectively, S/M values of 0.49, 0.46, and 0.31, according to their smooth platelet morphology. Except for the high temperature birnessite, the change of morphology after protonation decreases the concentration of redox active sites while the BET surface increases. This work shows that HK-MnO2 presents the best performance, 46.6 F/g at 100 mV/s, to be used as an electrode material in supercapacitor storage systems.

Abstract: International audience; The French Yellow Vests movement offers a case study for examining the logics and effects of the avoidance of institutional politics. The movement brought together seasoned activists and a large share of first-time protesters, i.e. social actors with no prior experience in collective action or party politics. Drawing on in-depth ethnographic biographical interviews conducted with the latter, we argue that, paradoxically enough, avoiding politics was a condition of possibility for their entry and continuation in the mobilisation. Moreover, they became political insofar as they acquired a sense of entitlement to speak out publicly as citizens, and a new appetence for current affairs. Even though first-timers’ interest in politics and their forms of knowledge remained very unequal, we urge to study the avoidance of institutional politics as political tactics that might, under certain circumstances, foster politicisation among the most disenfranchised groups.

Abstract: International audience; Analysis of the incisor enamel microstructure of extinct and extant West Indian caviomorph rodents emphasizes a clear microstructural distinction between the Echimyidae (Capromyinae and Heteropsomyinae) among Octodontoidea and the "Heptaxodontidae" whose phylogenetic affinities are debated. All capromyines and heteropsomyines have a pattern of enamel characterized by a rectangular crystallite arrangement, which is biomechanically strongest in limiting crack propagation most efficiently (subtype [Sbt.] 3 of multiserial Hunter-Schreger bands [HSBs]). This enamel condition is exclusive to all mainland octodontoids. In stark contrast, “heptaxodontids” sampled here exhibit much less derived enamel subtypes of multiserial HSBs with parallel to acute angular crystallite arrangement (Sbt. 1 [Clidomys], Sbt. 1–2 [Elasmodontomys], and low acute Sbt. 2 [Amblyrhiza]), less well adapted for prevention of crack propagation. The incisor enamel microstructure of Amblyrhiza and Clidomys is consistent with a chinchilloid assignment, as reflected by the anatomy of their auditory region and their unusual dental pattern. For Elasmodontomys, the primitive condition of its incisor enamel is difficult to reconcile with its highly nested phylogenetic position within the Octodontoidea clade (among the Capromyinae), as recently inferred from aDNA analyses. The different enamel patterns among extinct and extant West Indian caviomorphs indicate distinct high-level taxonomic groups, but restricted to the Octochinchilloi (Octodontoidea and Chinchilloidea) among Caviomorpha. The great diversity of caviomorphs on the Caribbean islands resulted from intra-archipelago diversification through time, but their high-level phylogenetic diversity can only be explained by distinct sources, implying de facto multiple (potentially time-staggered) natural colonizations of the West Indies. The chinchilloid-compatible enamel and dental pattern characterizing Borikenomys from lower Oligocene deposits in Puerto Rico, strongly suggest a link with some of the recently-extinct "heptaxodontids" that would substantiate their much greater antiquity in the Caribbean islands.
