Abstract

International audience; This study aims to investigate the ability of an imidazolium biobased Zwitterionic Ionic Liquids (ZILs) in enhancing the phytoavailability of copper from garden (G) and vineyard (V) soils using the model plant ryegrass. Uncontaminated and artificially contaminated CuSO4 soils, unamended and ZIL-amended soil modalities were designed. The copper/ZIL mo-lar ratio (1/4) introduced was rationally established based on molecular modeling and on the maximal copper concentration in artificially contaminated soil. Higher accumulation of copper in the shoots was detected for the uncontaminated and copper contaminated ZIL amended V soils (18.9 and 23.3 mg/kg, respectively) contrary to G soils together with a ZIL concentration of around 3% (W/W) detected by LC-MS analyses. These data evidenced a Cu-accumulation improvement of 38% and 66% compared to non-amended V soils (13.6 and 13.9 mg/kg respectively). ZIL would be mainly present under Cu(II)-ZIL4 complexes in the shoots. The impact on the chemical composition of shoot was also studied. The results show that depending on the soils modalitity, the presence of free copper and/or ZIL led to different chemical compositions in lignin and monomeric sugar contents. In the biorefinery context, performances of enzymatic hydrolysis of shoots were also related to the presence of both ZIL and copper under free or complex forms. Ecotoxicity assessment of the vineyard soil samples indicated that the quantity of copper and ZIL remaining in the soils had no sig-nificant toxicity. ZIL amendment in a copper-contaminated soil was demonstrated as being a promising way to promote the valorization of phytoremediation plants.

Abstract

International audience; Herein, we report a direct recycling process of the spent LiFePO4 by direct room temperature chemical lithiation. A fine characterization of a recovered LFP cathode from a spent commercial battery demonstrates that the end of life of the battery is mainly due to the lithium loss, while the structure of the LFP cathode material is globally preserved. It is shown here that such a cathode can be efficiently recovered by direct lithiation in solution using LiI in different solvents (acetonitrile, ethanol, cyclohexane, methanol, DMSO and propan-1,2-ol) with optimized experimental parameters. The best electrochemical performance is obtained with ethanol, one of the greenest and cheapest solvents, without any additional heat treatment. More interestingly, the regeneration of LFP can be achieved directly with the material cast onto its aluminum collector, which paves the way to more efficient recycling preserving the whole electrode formulation and avoiding a new electrode casting. The chemically lithiated LFP cathode in ethanol exhibits a full reversible capacity of ∼168 mAh/g vs. Li metal with a stable coulombic efficiency exceeding 98% for 25 cycles. In addition, this recovery process produces regenerated electrodes showing good electrochemical performance also at high current density.

Abstract

International audience; Lactococcus cremoris and Lactococcus lactis are among the most extensively exploited species of lactic acid bacteria in dairy fermentations. The cell wall of lactococci, like other Gram-positive bacteria, possesses a thick peptidoglycan layer, which may incorporate cell wall polysaccharides (CWPS), wall teichoic acids (WTA), and/or lipoteichoic acids (LTA).In this study, we report the isolation, purification and structural analysis of the carbohydrate moieties of glycolipids (GL) and LTA of the L. cremoris model strain 3107. Chemical structures of these compounds were studied by chemical methods, NMR spectroscopy and positive and negative mode ESI MS. We found that the LTA of strain 3107 is composed of short chains of 1,3-polyglycerol phosphate (PGP), attached to O-6 of the non-reducing glucose of the kojibiose-Gro backbone of the glycolipid anchor. Extraction of cells with cold TCA afforded the detection of 1,3-glycerol phosphate chains randomly substituted at O-2 of glycerol by D-Ala. Unlike the LTA of L. lactis strains studied to date, the PGP backbone of the LTA of L. cremoris 3107 did not carry any glycosyl substitution. The deacylated glycolipid fraction contained the free kojibiose-Gro oligosaccharide, identical to the backbone of the GL anchor of LTA, and its shorter fragment α-Glc-1-Gro. These OS may have originated from the GL precursors of LTA biosynthesis.

Abstract

International audience; Using a thick NMC811 (LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2) electrode as an example, we present a macro-to nanoscale 2D and 3D imaging analysis approach coupled with 4D (space + time) computational modeling to probe its degradation mechanism in a lithium-ion bat-tery cell. Particle cracking increases and contact loss between parti-cles and carbon-binder domain are observed to correlate with the cell degradation. This study unravels that the reaction heterogene-ity within the thick cathode caused by the unbalanced electron con-duction is the main cause of the battery degradation over cycling. The increased heterogeneity in the system will entail more cathode regions where the degree of active material utilization is uneven, leading to higher probabilities of particle cracking. These findings shed light on the crucial role of the electronic and ionic transporta-tion networks in the performance deterioration of the thick cathode. They also provide guidance for cathode architecture optimization and performance improvement.

Risk factors for discharge from an AGU to post-acute care (PAC) have not previously been investigated in detail.Methods: The objective is to identify risk factors for PAC transfer. The DAMAGE (prospective multicenter cohort) consecutively included more than 3500 subjects aged 75 or older and admitted to an AGU. The patients underwent a comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) during their stay in the AGU. Only community-dwelling patients admitted to the AGU from the emergency department were included in the analysis. We recorded the characteristics of the care pathway and identified risk factors for discharge to home or to a PAC facility.Results: 1928 patients were included. Loss of functional independence (a decrease in the Katz activities of daily living (ADL) score between 1 month prior to admission and AGU admission), living alone, social isolation, a high Katz ADL score at home, a low Katz ADL on admission, and delirium on admission were risk factors for transfer to PAC. Obesity, an elevated serum albumin level, and community-acquired infection were associated with discharge to home. Neither sex nor age was a risk factor for home discharge or transfer to PAC.Conclusion: The present results might help clinicians and discharge planning teams to identify patients at risk of transfer to PAC more reliably and promptly in AGUs.Keywords: care transitions, health services, rehabilitation, risk factors, acute geriatric unit

Abstract

International audience; Emergence of secondary roots through parental tissue is a highly controlled developmental process. Although the model plant Arabidopsis has been useful to uncover the predominant role of auxin in this process, its simple root structure is not representative of how emergence takes place in most plants, which display more complex root anatomy. White lupin is a legume crop producing structures called cluster roots, where closely spaced rootlets emerge synchronously. Rootlet primordia push their way through several cortical cell layers while maintaining the parent root integrity, reflecting more generally the lateral root emergence process in most multilayered species. In this study, we showed that lupin rootlet emergence is associated with an upregulation of cell wall pectin modifying and degrading genes under the active control of auxin. Among them, we identified LaPG3, a polygalacturonase gene typically expressed in cells surrounding the rootlet primordium and we showed that its downregulation delays emergence. Immunolabeling of pectin epitopes and their quantification uncovered a gradual pectin demethylesterification in the emergence zone, which was further enhanced by auxin treatment, revealing a direct hormonal control of cell wall properties. We also report rhamnogalacturonan-I modifications affecting cortical cells that undergo separation as a consequence of primordium outgrowth. In conclusion, we describe a model of how external tissues in front of rootlet primordia display cell wall modifications to allow for the passage of newly formed rootlets.

Abstract

International audience; In this study, we propose a computational methodology to optimize the microstructure of the carbon felt electrode employed in redox flow batteries. Our optimization objective is to maximize the electrolyte utilization rate in a quantitive manner, which is affected by the fibrous electrode's microstructure. By combining stochastic generation of electrode microstructures, the digital compression of the electrodes, the Lattice Boltzmann Method, and a Bayesian optimization approach, we established our computational workflow that predicts an optimized set of parameters for electrode design. The optimization algorithm assesses electrode microstructure properties, including the specific surface area, the hydraulic permeability, and the practical reactive volume. The optimization results demonstrate that a high compression ratio with thick aligned fibers favors better electrode performance. For a highly compressed felt electrode, the pore size generally decreases while a small amount of large-sized pores remain in the microstructure, facilitating the convection in the electrolyte flow. The obtained properties from our optimal microstructure and from an unfavorable microstructure are injected into a homogeneous model to simulate the electrochemical performance during charge and discharge, in which the optimal case demonstrates a better reversible capacity than the not optimized one.

Abstract

International audience; Nanoplastics (NPLs), the presence in the environment of which was considered only “highly plausible” until recently, have become the focus of environmental and ecotoxicological studies. However, up to know, little is known about the potential risks of NPLs to human health. In this review, we provide an overview of the evidence of a specific impact of NPLs on human digestive health reported to date. We focus on the different sources of oral exposure to NPLs, including food packaging, food and beverages. We then summarize the toxicological effects of such exposure on the digestive ecosystem in vitro and in vivo in rodents. Importantly, gut toxicity results should be assessed with the type of NPL model materials employed, due to the critical influence of their chemical and physical properties. As a result, we thoroughly describe NPLs with their source, chemical composition and physicochemical behavior to emphasize the lack of NPL characterization and/or model materials. Finally, we propose avenues for interdisciplinary studies at the interface of toxicology and chemistry, with a view to achieving appropriate scientific assessments of the risks to gut health posed by NPLs, and improvements in their management.

Abstract

International audience; This paper presents a new Remote Hyperspectral Imaging System (RHIS) embedded on an Unmanned Aquatic Drone (UAD) for plastic detection and identification in coastal and freshwater environments. This original system, namely the Remotely Operated Vehicle of the University of Littoral Côte d’Opale (ROV-ULCO), works in a near-field of view, where the distance between the hyperspectral camera and the water surface is about 45 cm. In this paper, the new ROV-ULCO system with all its components is firstly presented. Then, a hyperspectral image database of plastic litter acquired with this system is described. This database contains hyperspectral data cubes of different plastic types and polymers corresponding to the most-common plastic litter items found in aquatic environments. An in situ spectral analysis was conducted from this benchmark database to characterize the hyperspectral reflectance of these items in order to identify the absorption feature wavelengths for each type of plastic. Finally, the ability of our original system RHIS to automatically recognize different types of plastic litter was assessed by applying different supervised machine learning methods on a set of representative image patches of marine litter. The obtained results highlighted the plastic litter classification capability with an overall accuracy close to 90%. This paper showed that the newly presented RHIS coupled with the UAD is a promising approach to identify plastic waste in aquatic environments.

Abstract

In the context of calling for low carbon emissions, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been widely concerned as a power source for electric vehicles, so the fundamental science behind their manufacturing has attracted much attention in recent years. Calendering is an important step of the LIB electrode manufacturing process, and the changes it brings to the electrode microstructure and mechanical properties are worth studying. In this work, we reported the observed cracking of active material (AM) particles due to calendering pressure under ex situ nano-X-ray tomography experiments. We developed a 3D-resolved discrete element method (DEM) model with bonded connections to physically mimic the calendering process using real AM particle shapes derived from the tomography experiments. The DEM model can well predict the change of the morphology of the dry electrode under pressure, and the changes of the applied pressure and porosity are consistent with the experimental values. At the same time, the model is able to simulate the secondary AM particles cracking by the fracture of the bond under force. Our model is the first of its kind being able to predict the fracture of the secondary particles along the calendering process. This work provides a tool for guidance in the manufacturing of optimized LIB electrodes.

Abstract

International audience; The pretreatment of Miscanthus x giganteus with the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([Emim] [OAc]), followed by enzymatic hydrolysis and oxidative depolymerization, resulted in the efficient production of monomeric sugars and selective production of phenolic intermediates. The liquid fractions containing monomeric sugars were obtained with high yields (>80%), while a solid fraction enriched with lignin (>50% w.w − 1) was isolated. The phenolic monomers released during [Emim][OAc]-pretreatment were identified and quantified by HPLC. A decrease in the content of vanillin, vanillic acid, and p-hydroxybenzaldehyde was observed during pretreatment, suggesting a selective solubilization of guaicyl and p-hydroxyphenyl units from the lignin polymer in [Emim][OAc]. The decrease in p-coumaric and ferulic acids content suggested a cleavage of lignincarbohydrate complexes during pretreatment. Both pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis affected the content of ferulic acid ether and ester bonds. The NMR structural study (2D HSQC) of the isolated lignin showed the preservation of β-O-4 ′ interunit bonds, while 31 P NMR analysis revealed a high content of aliphatic hydroxyl groups. The oxidative depolymerization of the isolated lignin, catalyzed by the laccase mediator system in the presence of 5% v.v − 1 recycled [Emim][OAc] in buffer, mainly led to the production of free p-hydroxybenzaldehyde as a promising platform molecule. The mass balance of glucan, xylan and lignin from Miscanthus was validated throughout this strategy.

Abstract

International audience; Dans le cadre de cette étude, la contamination en microplastiques a été évaluée dans une rivière à la fois en surface (0-25cm) et en subsurface (25-50cm). La partie la plus profonde de la colonne d’eau (10 derniers cm) a également été échantillonnée ainsi les sédiments. Trois campagnes d’échantillonnage ont été menées lors de différentes conditions météorologiques : durant une forte pluie au printemps, après une forte pluie en automne et lors d’une période sèche en hiver. Les résultats montrent que les eaux de subsurface contiennent autant de particules que les eaux de surface, quelles que soient les conditions environnementales.Des concentrations en particules 3 à 11 fois supérieures ont été retrouvées lors des fortes pluies au printemps comparées aux autres campagnes d’échantillonnage dans tous les compartiments étudiés dans la colonne d’eau. Tous compartiments confondus, le type de particules observé est impacté par les conditions météorologiques avec 86% à 96% de fibres parmi les particules échantillonnées en hiver, comparé aux autres campagnes au printemps et en automne où les fibres représentent respectivement 31% et 75%.Lors de cette étude 73,5% des particules analysées sont des polymères qui ont une densité théorique inférieure à 1 dans les échantillons de surface et subsurface, alors que cette proportion tombe à 40,8% pour les échantillons de fond et de sédiments ce qui indique une répartition des particules selon leur densité dans la colonne d’eau.Cette étude souligne l’importance de prendre en compte la subsurface ainsi que les variations saisonnières pour évaluer les types et niveaux de contamination microplastiques dans les environnements fluviaux.

International audience; A common way to consider rhythmic complexity is to compute it locally by studying the composition of rhythmic patterns. Many complexity measures have been proposed in the literature [Thul2008] and correlated with human judgment [Beltran2015]. But the perception of the rhythmic complexity of an entire piece of music can depend on more global parameters such as the number of rhythmic patterns used over time, the similarity between the different rhythmic patterns used, the repetition of patterns, their periodicity, the level of novelty throughout the piece, the meter, the tempo...We propose here to consider those characteristics to compute rhythmic complexity in symbolic music pieces at several scales: low level (bar wide), middle level (groups of bars) and high level (piece wide). We present first experiments on symbolic music datasets to study the progression of rhythmic complexity throughout the pieces. This approach can be used to select pieces with particular rhythmic properties in existing corpora, for example in a music therapy context or for educational purposes. Abstract

International audience; Background The identification of patients at high risk of a disabling disease course would be invaluable in guiding initial therapy in Crohn’s disease (CD). Our objective was to evaluate a combination of clinical, serological, and genetic factors to predict complicated disease course in pediatric-onset CD. Methods Data for pediatric-onset CD patients, diagnosed before 17 years of age between 1988 and 2004 and followed more than 5 years, were extracted from the population-based EPIMAD registry. The main outcome was defined by the occurrence of complicated behavior (stricturing or penetrating) and/or intestinal resection within the 5 years following diagnosis. Lasso logistic regression models were used to build a predictive model based on clinical data at diagnosis, serological data (ASCA, pANCA, anti-OmpC, anti-Cbir1, anti-Fla2, anti-Flax), and 369 candidate single nucleotide polymorphisms. Results In total, 156 children with an inflammatory (B1) disease at diagnosis were included. Among them, 35% (n = 54) progressed to a complicated behavior or an intestinal resection within the 5 years following diagnosis. The best predictive model (PREDICT-EPIMAD) included the location at diagnosis, pANCA, and 6 single nucleotide polymorphisms. This model showed good discrimination and good calibration, with an area under the curve of 0.80 after correction for optimism bias (sensitivity, 79%, specificity, 74%, positive predictive value, 61%, negative predictive value, 87%). Decision curve analysis confirmed the clinical utility of the model. Conclusions A combination of clinical, serotypic, and genotypic variables can predict disease progression in this population-based pediatric-onset CD cohort. Independent validation is needed before it can be used in clinical practice.

Abstract

International audience; In the past decades, the microencapsulation of mammalian cells into microparticles has been extensively studied for various in vitro and in vivo applications. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the viability of bacterial polyglucuronic acid (PGU), an exopolysaccharide derived from bacteria and composed of glucuronic acid units, as an effective material for cell microencapsulation. Using the method of dropping an aqueous solution of PGU-containing cells into a Ca2+-loaded solution, we produced spherical PGU microbeads with >93 % viability in the encapsulated human hepatoma HepG2 cells. Hollow-core microcapsules were formed via polyelectrolyte complex layer formation of PGU and poly-l-lysine, after which Ca2+, a cross-linker of PGU, was chelated, and this was accomplished by sequential immersion of microbeads in aqueous solutions of poly-l-lysine and sodium citrate. The encapsulated HepG2 cells proliferated and formed cell aggregates within the microparticles over a 14-day culture, with significantly larger aggregates forming within the microcapsules. Our results provide evidence for the viability of PGU for cell microencapsulation for the first time, thereby contributing to advancements in tissue engineering.

Abstract

International audience; AbstractCryptosporidium parvum is an enteric parasite and a major contributor to acute enteritis in calves worldwide, causing an important economic burden for farmers. This parasite poses a major public health threat through transmission between livestock and humans. Our previous pilot study in Western Europe revealed a high prevalence of Cryptosporidium in calves of dairy farms. In the sequel study herein, 936 faecal samples were collected from the same 51 dairy farms across Belgium, France, and the Netherlands. Following DNA extraction, Cryptosporidium screening was carried out using nested-PCR amplification targeting the SSU rRNA gene. All positive samples were sequenced, and phylogenetic analyses were used to identify the Cryptosporidium spp. present. The 60 kDa glycoprotein (gp60) gene was also sequenced to determine the C. parvum subtypes present. Prevalence of Cryptosporidium ranged from 23.3% to 25%, across the three countries surveyed. The parasite was found in most of the farms sampled, with 90.2% testing positive. Cryptosporidium parvum, C. bovis, C. ryanae and C. andersoni were all identified, with the former being the most predominant, representing 71.4% of all infections. Cryptosporidium parvum was associated with pre-weaned calves, while other species were associated with older animals. Subtyping of gp60 gene revealed nine subtypes, eight of which have previously been reported to cause clinical disease in humans. Similarly to the first study, vertical transmission was not a major contributor to Cryptosporidium spread. Our study highlights the need for further investigation into cryptosporidiosis transmission, and future studies will require a One Health approach to reduce the impact of this disease.

Abstract

Background Except for cryptococcosis, fungal infection of the central nervous system (FI-CNS) is a rare but severe complication. Clinical and radiological signs are non-specific, and the value of conventional mycological diagnosis is very low. This study aimed to assess the value of β1,3-D-glucan (BDG) detection in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of non-neonatal non-cryptococcosis patients. Methods Cases associated with BDG assay in the CSF performed in 3 French University Hospitals over 5 years were included. Clinical, radiological, and mycological results were used to classify the episodes as proven/highly probable, probable, excluded, and unclassified FI-CNS. Sensitivity and specificity were compared to that calculated from an exhaustive review of the literature. Results In total, 228 episodes consisting of 4, 7, 177, and 40 proven/highly probable, probable, excluded, and unclassified FI-CNS, respectively, were analysed. The sensitivity of BDG assay in CSF to diagnose proven/highly probable/probable FI-CNS ranged from 72.7% [95% confidence interval {CI}: 43.4%‒90.2%] to 100% [95% CI: 51%‒100%] in our study and was 82% in the literature. For the first time, specificity could be calculated over a large panel of pertinent controls and was found at 81.8% [95% CI: 75.3%‒86.8%]. Bacterial neurologic infections were associated with several false positive results Conclusions Despite its sub-optimal performance, BDG assay in the CSF should be added to the diagnostic armamentarium for FI-CNS.

Abstract

The technique known as 4D-STEM has recently emerged as a powerful tool for the local characterization of crystalline structures in materials, such as cathode materials for Li-ion batteries or perovskite materials for photovoltaics. However, the use of new detectors optimized for electron diffraction patterns and other advanced techniques requires constant adaptation of methodologies to address the challenges associated with crystalline materials. In this study, we present a novel image processing method to improve pattern matching in the determination of crystalline orientations and phases. Our approach uses sub-pixelar adaptative image processing to register and reconstruct electron diffraction signals in large 4D-STEM datasets. By using adaptive prominence and linear filters such as mean and gaussian blur, we are able to improve the quality of the diffraction pattern registration. The resulting data compression rate of 103 is well-suited for the era of big data and provides a significant enhancement in the performance of the entire ACOM data processing method. Our approach is evaluated using dedicated metrics, which demonstrate a high improvement in phase recognition. Our results demonstrate that this data preparation method not only enhances the quality of the resulting image but also boosts the confidence level in the analysis of the outcomes related to determining crystal orientation and phase. Abstract

International audience; This article presents the engineering of disodium naphthalene dicarboxylate (Na2-NDC) based negative organic electrodes for sodium-ion batteries. Firstly, different synthesis strategies were used to modify the morphology and crystal structure of the active material particles in order to improve their electrochemical performance. The engineering of the electrodes was then carried out to maximize the composite performances, which were initially evaluated in half-cells against Na. After electrode optimization, a complete cell was assembled by coupling the Na2-NDC negative electrode with Na3V2(PO4)2F3 (NVPF) as an inorganic-based cathode, to obtain a complete so-called “hybrid” cell. A thorough electrochemical study of the complete cell was carried out to evaluate the cell stability during cycling using different electrolyte additives. Thanks to the electrode and electrolyte optimizations, the NVPF/Na2-NDC hybrid cell demonstrated remarkable electrochemical performance, in terms of reversible capacity, cycling stability and rate performance. The full cells in the present work showed an energy density between 260 and 300 Wh/kg in the first cycle at low C-rate, and an energy density of 120–155 Wh/kg after 400 cycles, superior to those previously reported in the literature for the hybrid cell.In addition, a series of post-mortem analyses were carried out, based on GC/MS analysis, UV–Vis spectroscopy and electron microscopy (SEM/EDX), to understand the evolution of the performance over time and thus guide future research in this field to design the next generation of more durable and easily recycled sodium-ion battery.

Abstract

Most organisms adjust their development according to the environmental conditions. For the majority, this implies the sensing of alterations to cell walls caused by different cues. Despite the relevance of this process, few molecular players involved in cell wall sensing are known and characterized. Here, we show that the wall-associated kinase-like protein RESISTANCE TO FUSARIUM OXYSPORUM 1 (RFO1) is required for plant growth and early defense against Fusarium oxysporum and functions by sensing changes in the pectin methylation levels in the cell wall. The RFO1 dwell time at the plasma membrane is affected by the pectin methylation status at the cell wall, regulating MITOGEN-ACTIVATED PROTEIN KINASE and gene expression. We show that the extracellular domain of RFO1 binds de-methylated pectin in vitro, whose distribution in the cell wall is altered during F. oxysporum infection. Further analyses also indicate that RFO1 is required for the BR-dependent plant growth alteration in response to inhibition of pectin de-methyl-esterase activity at the cell wall. Abstract

International audience; Hard carbons are the most investigated materials as negative electrode for Na-ion batteries, although the exact mechanism of sodium storage remains under debate. This work is focused on the study of the sodiation mechanism of non-graphitizing carbons (NGC) prepared in a wide range of pyrolysis temperatures (1000 °C–2500 °C), thus covering the whole range from hard carbons (HC) to glassy carbons (GC). Structural and textural characterizations show that increasing the pyrolysis temperature leads to NGCs with a more ordered structure, containing fewer heteroatoms and structural defects, and particularly leads to a developed closed microporosity. In this work, in situ Raman spectroscopy at different excitation wavelengths is used to clarify the mechanism of electrochemical sodiation: it is revealed that the intercalation of Na+ between the graphene layers occurs mainly during the sloping part of the galvanostatic profile, whereas the plateau at low voltage (below 0.1 V vs. Na+/Na) can be associated with the filling of micropores with sodium.

Abstract

International audience; Baillonella toxisperma is a medicinal plant used in northern Gabon to treat microbial diseases. It is a plant well-known by local populations, but very few studies have focused on the molecules responsible for the antibacterial activities of B. toxisperma. This study proposes a dereplication strategy based on molecular networking generated from HPLC-ESI-Q/TOF data, allowing investigation of the molecules responsible for the antibacterial activity of B. toxisperma. From this strategy, eighteen compounds were putatively identified. All of these compounds belonged mainly to five families of natural compounds, including phenylpropanolamines, stilbenes, flavonoids, lignans and phenolic glycosides. The chemical study carried out from the bark of B. toxisperma allowed us to identify, for the first time, compounds such as resveratrol and derivatives, epicatechin, epigallocatechin and epigallocatechin gallate. In addition, antibacterial activity (diffusion method and microdilution) and cytotoxicity (Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8 Assay)) in vitro were evaluated. The crude ethanolic extract, as well as the fractions of B. toxisperma, showed significant antibacterial activity. However, the ethanolic fractions F2 and F4 presented high antibacterial activity compared to the crude extract. Cytotoxicity studies on colon-cancer cells (Caco-2) and human keratinocyte cells (HaCaT) showed moderate cytotoxicity in both cell types. This study clearly shows the therapeutic potential of the ethanolic extract of the bark of B. toxisperma and provides information on the phytochemical composition and bioactive compounds of the plant.

Abstract

IntroductionVarious definitions of very severe (VS) tricuspid regurgitation (TR) have been proposed based on the effective regurgitant orifice area (EROA) or tricuspid coaptation gap (TCG). Because of the inherent limitations associated with the EROA, we hypothesized that the TCG would be more suitable for defining VSTR and predicting outcomes.Materials and methodsIn this French multicentre retrospective study, we included 606 patients with ≥moderate-to-severe isolated functional TR (without structural valve disease or an overt cardiac cause) according to the recommendations of the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging. Patients were further stratified into VSTR according to the EROA (≥60 mm2) and then according to the TCG (≥10 mm). The primary endpoint was all-cause mortality and the secondary endpoint was cardiovascular mortality.ResultsThe relationship between the EROA and TCG was poor (R2 = 0.22), especially when the size of the defect was large. Four-year survival was comparable between patients with an EROA 2 vs. ≥60 mm2 (68 ± 3% vs. 64 ± 5%, p = 0.89). A TCG ≥10 mm was associated with lower four-year survival than a TCG p p = 0.019) and cardiovascular mortality (adjusted HR[95% CI] = 2.12[1.33–3.25], p = 0.001), whereas an EROA ≥60 mm2 was not associated with all-cause or cardiovascular mortality (adjusted HR[95% CI]: 1.16[0.81–1.64], p = 0.416, and adjusted HR[95% CI]: 1.07[0.68–1.68], p = 0.784, respectively)ConclusionThe correlation between the TCG and EROA is weak and decreases with increasing defect size. A TCG ≥10 mm is associated with increased all-cause and cardiovascular mortality and should be used to define VSTR in isolated significant functional TR.

Abstract

There is a variety of electrochemical methods to determine the transport properties of electrolytes. There are also different underlying hypotheses to derive transport equations that are used in these methods. In this work, we examine how the values of the transport properties determined with some of these methods are affected depending on whether convection is neglected in the Onsager-Stefan-Maxwell transport equations. In particular, we show that the values of the diffusion coefficient and the cation transference number that are determined from analyses of experimental data that ignore convection deviate from those that account for it. We exemplify our point using simulations. This work emphasizes that transport properties from the literature can be used in a mathematical model providing the underlying assumptions of the model are compatible with those used for their determination.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to identify the chemical composition and sequential structure of alginate isolated from C. crinita harvested in the Bulgarian Black Sea, as well as its effects in histamine-induced paw inflammation in rats. The serum levels of TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-10 in rats with systemic inflammation, and the levels of TNF-α in a model of acute peritonitis in rats were also investigated. The structural characterization of the polysaccharide was obtained by FTIR, SEC-MALS, and 1H NMR. The extracted alginate had an M/G ratio of 1.018, a molecular weight of 7.31 × 104 g/mol, and a polydispersity index of 1.38. C. crinita alginate in doses of 25 and 100 mg/kg showed well-defined anti-inflammatory activity in the model of paw edema. A significant decrease in serum levels of IL-1β was observed only in animals treated with C. crinita alginate in a dose of 25 mg/kg bw. The concentrations of TNF-α and IL-6 in serum were significantly reduced in rats treated with both doses of the polysaccharide, but no statistical significance was observed in the levels of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10. A single dose of alginate did not significantly alter the levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokine TNF-α in the peritoneal fluid of rats with a model of peritonitis.

Abstract

International audience; Since the success of bone regenerative medicine depends on scaffold morphological and mechanical properties, numerous scaffolds designs have been proposed in the last decade, including graded structures that are suited to enhance tissue ingrowth. Most of these structures are based either on foams with a random pore definition, or on the periodic repetition of a unit cell (UC). These approaches are limited by the range of target porosities and obtained effective mechanical properties, and do not permit to easily generate a pore size gradient from the core to the periphery of the scaffold. In opposition, the objective of the present contribution is to propose a flexible design framework to generate various three-dimensional (3D) scaffolds structures including cylindrical graded scaffolds from the definition of a UC by making use of a non-periodic mapping. Conformal mappings are firstly used to generate graded circular cross-sections, while 3D structures are then obtained by stacking the cross-sections with or without a twist between different scaffold layers.. The effective mechanical properties of different scaffold configurations are presented and compared using an energy-based efficient numerical method, pointing out the versatility of the design procedure to separately govern longitudinal and transverse anisotropic scaffold properties. Among these configurations, a helical structure exhibiting couplings between transverse and longitudinal properties is proposed and permits to extend the adaptability of the proposed framework. In order to investigate the capacity of common additive manufacturing techniques to fabricate the proposed structures, a subset of these configurations is elaborated using a standard SLA setup, and subjected to experimental mechanical testing. Despite observed geometric differences between the initial design and the actual obtained structures, the effective properties are satisfyingly predicted by the proposed computational method. Promising perspectives are offered concerning the design of self-fitting scaffolds with on-demand properties depending on the clinical application.

Abstract

International audience; Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common cancers in the world. When treating patients, therapeutic agents have side effects; hence, the use of natural compounds found in medicinal plants including pomegranate. Ultrasound assisted extraction (UAE) is a new technique evolving to the detriment of traditional methods such as maceration. In this study, we investigated the antioxidant and anticancer effect of pomegranate peel extracts obtained by maceration and UAE at three different ultrasonic power levels (P1 = 10 W; P2 = 50 W; P3 = 100 W) on HCT-116 colorectal cancer cells. Phytochemical screening highlighted the presence of primary and secondary metabolites in pomegranate peels. In addition, the ethanolic extract obtained by UAE at 50 W was shown to be the most concentrated in phenolic and flavonoid compounds and have the most powerful antioxidant activity, which reached a maximum activity of 92% as determined by DPPH test. Similarly, the MTT cell viability test showed that the extract obtained by UAE at 50 W had the most potent inhibitory effect compared to the other extracts. In conclusion, the UAE at 50 W was shown to be the most suitable and efficient extraction technique to obtain bioactive compounds from pomegranate peel extracts that can be used in the treatment of CRC.

Abstract

International audience; Laurus nobilis belongs to the family Lauraceae and is characterized by its evergreen nature. It is well known because of its traditional use in cooking and folk medicine. Many studies have been performed regarding its chemical composition and the pharmacological potential it exhibits. It has been reported to have antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, biocidal, antidiabetic, antiulcerogenic, neuroprotective, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and anticholinergic properties, making this plant of great clinical importance. The main chemical compounds that show bioactive properties in L. nobilis are terpenoids, phenolics, and fatty acids. The purpose of this review is to describe the main use of L. nobilis, notably of the leaves and fruits, and to relate their metabolite content with their pharmacological and toxicological properties.

Abstract

International audience; Immunotherapy has become the standard of care for several types of cancer, such as melanoma. However, it can induce toxicity, including immune checkpoint inhibitor-induced colitis (CIC). CIC shares several clinical, histological, biological, and therapeutic features with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) can complicate the evolution of IBD. We aimed to characterize the association between CDI and CIC in patients treated with anti-CTLA-4 and anti-PD-1 for melanoma. Patients from nine centers treated with anti-CTLA-4 and anti-PD-1 for melanoma and presenting with CDI from 2010 to 2021 were included in this retrospective cohort. The primary endpoint was the occurrence of CIC. The secondary endpoints were findings allowing us to characterize CDI. Eighteen patients were included. Eleven were treated with anti-PD-1, four with anti-CTLA-4, and three with anti-PD-1 in combination with anti-CTLA-4. Among the 18 patients, six had isolated CDI and 12 had CIC and CDI. Among these 12 patients, eight had CIC complicated by CDI, three had concurrent CIC and CDI, and one had CDI followed by CIC. CDI was fulminant in three patients. Endoscopic and histological features did not specifically differentiate CDI from CIC. Nine of 11 patients required immunosuppressive therapy when CDI was associated with CIC. In nine cases, immunotherapy was discontinued due to digestive toxicity. CDI can be isolated or can complicate or reveal CIC. CDI in patients treated with immunotherapy shares many characteristics with CDI complicating IBD. Stool tests for Clostridium difficile should be carried out for all patients with diarrhea who are being treated with immunotherapy.

Abstract

Introduction: Clinical studies on the effectiveness of Baclofen in alcohol use disorder (AUD) yielded mixed results possibly because of differential effects of the enantiomers and sex-related differences. Here we examined the effect of the different Baclofen enantiomers on alcohol intake and on evoked dopamine release in the core of the nucleus accumbens (NAcc) in male and female Long Evans rats.Methods: Rats were trained to chronically self-administer 20% alcohol solution in daily binge drinking sessions and were treated with the different forms of Baclofen [RS(±), R(+) and S(−)]. The effects on the evoked dopamine release within the core of the nucleus accumbens were measured in brain slices from the same animals and the alcohol naïve animals using the fast scan cyclic voltammetry technique.Results: RS(±)-Baclofen reduced alcohol intake regardless of sex but more females were non-responders to the treatment. R(+)-Baclofen also reduced alcohol intake regardless of sex but females were less sensitive than males. S(−)-Baclofen did not have any effect on average but in some individuals, especially in the females, it did increase alcohol intake by at least 100%. There were no sex differences in Baclofen pharmacokinetic but a strong negative correlation was found in females with a paradoxical effect of increased alcohol intake with higher blood Baclofen concentration. Chronic alcohol intake reduced the sensitivity to the effect of Baclofen on evoked dopamine release and S(−)-Baclofen increased dopamine release specifically in females.Discussion: Our results demonstrate a sex-dependent effect of the different forms of Baclofen with no or negative effects (meaning an increase in alcohol self-administration) in subgroup of females that could be linked to a differential effect on dopamine release and should warrant future clinical studies on alcohol use disorder pharmacotherapy that will deeply analyze sex difference.

Abstract

International audience; Thick Lithium Ion Battery (LIB) electrodes suffer from poor rate capability and high ionic impedance due to their thickness and mesostructure. Therefore, optimizing thick electrode architectures becomes crucial. In this work, we report a systematic assessment of the ionic resistance in heterogeneous porous electrodes through the combination of computational simulations using a 4D-resolved model and experimental measurements. The first part of the study is devoted to a general assessment of Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) spectra, mapping the impact of ionic and electronic resistances on the overall impedances of uncalendered and calendered LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2, LiFePO4 and graphite electrodes. In the second part, in silico-generated electrodes with different porosities are used in computational EIS simulations to analyze the impact of the electrode porosity on the ionic impedance. As expected, the results show that a lower porosity leads to a higher ionic impedance because of a higher electrode tortuosity factor. Furthermore, in silico-generated electrodes with different porosities were stacked and assembled to create heterogeneities of porosity along the thickness, and used in computational EIS and galvanostatic discharge simulations. The computational results show that the porosity heterogeneity along the electrode thickness has a significant effect on the ionic impedance and capacity of the electrode. The electrode architecture with progressively decreasing porosity from separator to current collector shows the highest performance, a trend validated by our in house experimental EIS and galvanostatic discharge also reported in this manuscript. Overall, we conclude that the ionic resistance in a thick electrode can be effectively reduced through proper tuning of the porosity heterogeneity. The proposed heterogeneous electrode architectures presented here could enormously help building efficient thick electrodes for LIBs.

Abstract

International audience; Botryosphaeria dieback is a grapevine trunk disease that affects all viticulture regions of the world. Species of the genus Lasiodiplodia have been reported as pathogenic towards grapevine in several growing regions and have also been previously reported from Portuguese vineyards. Species in this genus, particularly Lasiodiplodia theobromae, have been reported on previous studies to be more aggressive than other Botryosphaeriaceae species most commonly associated with Botryosphaeria dieback. The aim of this study was to assess the response of some of the more representative cultivars planted throughout Portuguese vineyards, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Alvarinho, Aragonez (=Tempranillo) and Cabernet Sauvignon, by performing artificial inoculations with Lasiodiplodia spp. collected in different geographic locations worldwide. Two experiments, one by inoculating two-year-old grapevines kept on a greenhouse-controlled conditions with six isolates of L. theobromae and one isolate of L. mediterranea and other by inoculating seven-year-old field grown grapevines with two isolates of L. theobromae, were conducted twice. Response of the cultivars was assessed by evaluating the lesion length caused by the isolates under study, five months after inoculation. The results showed that all isolates studied were able to infect the annual shoots since they were always re-isolated and produced internal wood discoloration. Significant differences were found for all isolate/cultivar combinations. For both experiments, Touriga Nacional showed the largest lesions while Aragonez recorded the smallest lesions amongst the whole lot of cultivars inoculated with Lasiodiplodia spp.. In general, Portuguese isolates were more aggressive than those from Peru, which demonstrated to be mildly aggressive. These results give a first insight on the response of selected Portuguese cultivars to Lasiodiplodia species, which are present in Portugal, but not commonly associated with Botryosphaeria dieback. This contributes to improve knowledge of the impact that Botryosphaeria dieback causal agents have on crucial national cultivars, which may help winegrowers not only to manage current cultural practices, but also to optimize decision making when planning the establishment of new vineyards.

International audience; In order to extract the most capacity out of Li-ion battery (LIB) active materials, the optimization of the electrodes architectures at the mesoscale is essential. This work focuses on the morphology of the inactive phase (carbon additives and binder) through a 3-D modeling approach based on stochastic generation of electrode mesostructures with realistic LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 particle size distributions. It was found that having the inactive phase as a film spread on the active material results in poorer performance in part due to the loss of active surface area when compared to an agglomerate-like morphology.

Abstract

The global COVID-19 pandemic prompted governments to impose unprecedented sanitary measures, such as social distancing, curfews, and lockdowns. In France and other countries, the first COVID-19 lockdown raised concerns about an increased risk of child abuse. Abusive head trauma (AHT) is one of the most serious forms of child abuse in children aged 0-24 months and constitutes the leading cause of death in children under 2 years of age. Subdural hemorrhage (SDH) is present in 89% of cases of AHT and constitutes one of the most specific, objective clinical presentations in the diagnosis of child abuse. In a French nationwide study, we sought to evaluate the potential impact of the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic on the incidence of hospital admissions for child abuse with SDH, relative to the two previous years. We conducted a nationwide, retrospective study of data in the French national hospital discharge summary database by applying the International Classification of Diseases (10th Revision) codes for SDH and for child abuse. After including children aged up to 24 months with a diagnosis of child abuse and/or SDH following hospital admission anywhere in France between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2020, we compared the incidence of child abuse, the incidence of SDH + child abuse, and the demographic data for 2020 with the corresponding values for 2018 and 2019. There were no significant differences in the number of hospital admissions due to child abuse or SDH + child abuse between 2020 and the 2018/2019 control years. The incidence of SDH + child abuse was higher among boys than among girls. There were significantly fewer hospital admissions in May 2020 (p = 0.01) and significantly more in December 2020 (p = 0.03), relative to the same months in the two preceding years. There was a nonsignificant trend toward a lower incidence of hospital admission for child abuse in 2020, relative to 2019 (decrease: 6.4%) and 2018 (decrease: 7.6%).Conclusion: When considering children under the age of 24 months in France, the incidence of hospital admission for SDH in the context of child abuse was not significantly higher in 2020 than in the two previous years.What is known: • The impact of COVID-19 lockdown on child abuse and more specifically on subdural hemorrhage remains unknown.What is new: • There was no increase in hospitalizations for child abuse and AHT. • We found that boys are more often victims of child abuse and subdural hemorrhage among children aged less than 12 months.

Abstract

International audience; Carefully assessing the energetics along the pathway of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), our computational study reveals that the "classical" OER mechanism on the (110) surface of iridium dioxide (IrO 2) must be reconsidered. We find that the OER follows a bi-nuclear mechanism with adjacent top surface oxygen atoms as fixed adsorption sites, whereas the iridium atoms underneath play an indirect role and maintain their saturated 6-fold oxygen coordination at all stages of the reaction. The oxygen molecule is formed, via an Ir-OOOO-Ir transition state, by association of the outer oxygen atoms of two adjacent Ir-OO surface entities, leaving two intact Ir-O entities at the surface behind. This is drastically different from the commonly considered mono-nuclear mechanism where the O 2 molecule evolves by splitting of the Ir-O bond in an Ir-OO entity. We regard the rather weak reducibility of crystalline IrO 2 as the reason for favoring the novel pathway, which allows the Ir-O bonds to remain stable and explains the outstanding stability of IrO 2 under OER conditions. The establishment of surface oxygen atoms as fixed electrocatalytically active sites on a transitionmetal oxide represents a paradigm shift for the understanding of water oxidation electrocatalysis, and it reconciles the theoretical understanding of the OER mechanism on iridium oxide with recently reported experimental results from operando X-ray spectroscopy. The novel mechanism provides an efficient OER pathway on a weakly reducible oxide, defining a new strategy towards the design of advanced OER catalysts with combined activity and stability.

International audience; Li3PS4 is an attractive solid-electrolyte material that possesses high RT ionic conductivity (10(-4) S.cm(-1) ) but the effects of specific synthesis parameters on the material's local structure and transport properties still demand clarifications. Herein, we highlight the substantial effects of cooling breaks in the mechanochemical synthesis procedure on the formation of a variety of PxSya- moieties and on the transport properties of Li3PS4, through Raman and impedance spectroscopy measurements. We show that ball-milled Li3PS4 (with no subsequent annealing), which is often regarded as ``amorphous/glass/glassy Li3PS4 ``, is not fully amorphous using X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Upon subsequent annealing for 1 h above 190 degrees C, beta-Li3PS4 is crystallized and our P-31 magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectra suggest that 3 distinct PS43- moieties form, which we refer to as amorphous-, beta-and gamma-type units. Herein, we present a hypothesis to explain the correlation between the ionic conductivity and the distinct PS43- units as a function of the annealing temperature. Our results consolidate the recent reports noting that crystallization of beta-Li3PS4 is not necessary to obtain a high conductivity in ball-milled Li3PS4. Finally, we introduce a phase mixture between beta-Li3PS4 and gamma-Li3PS4 synthesized at 200 degrees C, which is the lowest synthesis temperature yet for gamma-Li3PS4.

Abstract

International audience; Na(3)V(2)(PO(4))(2)FO(2) is a promising candidate for practical use as a positive electrode material in Na-ion batteries thanks to its high voltage and excellent structural stability upon cycling. However, its limited intrinsic transport properties limit its performance at fast charge/discharge rates. In this work, two efficient approaches are presented to optimize the electrical conductivity of the electrode material: particle nanosizing and particle coating with an ionic liquid (IL). The former reveals that particle downsizing from micrometer to nanometer range improves the electronic conductivity by more than two orders of magnitude, which greatly improves the rate capability without affecting the capacity retention. The second approch dealing with an original surface modification by applying an IL coating strongly enhances the ionic mobility and offers new perspectives to improve the energy storage performance by designing the electrode materials' surface composition.

Abstract

International audience; Lithium metal was left unused for a long time in conventional liquid-based batteries, with a fear of catching fire for safety reasons. However, with advancements in solid electrolytes, these were considered the holy grail in the development of Li metal-based all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) alongside NMC which is considered the next-generation cathode material. Unfortunately, Li metal faces tremendous challenges when brought into contact with many currently considered promising solid electrolytes (SEs). The associated challenges are electrical, electro-(chemical) and mechanical instabilities. Surprisingly, if one studies the literature thoroughly, it seems that batteries based on SEs show much faster dendrite formation than liquid electrolytes. For this particular study, thanks to in situ and operando SEM, we studied these sulfide-based SEs, viz. β-Li3PS4 (LPS) and Li6PS5Cl (LPSCl). We highlight the key differences in failure modes of two sulfide-based SEs, by keeping the anode (Li metal) and cathode (NMC111) constant. For both the SEs, initially, electro-chemo-mechanical stress is induced, due to volume expansion of active materials and plating during cycling. However, in the case of LPS, this leads to electrical failure causing a short circuit, whereas in the case of LPSCl it leads to further mechanical damage-causing delamination of the cathode. Thus, the porous structure of SEs heavily determines the mechanical behaviour of the ASSB, the distribution of the induced electro-chemo-mechanical stress and in turn, the mechanism of ASSB failure. The other striking observations are: (1) cracks travel ahead of the dendrites (2) cracks grow and propagate at a much faster rate in the case of β-LPS than in LPSCl (3) higher surface roughness of LPSCl gives rise to many different morphologies of Li deposition/dendrites (4) the cathode electrolyte interface (CEI) forms and grows at a much faster rate in the case of LPS than in LPSCl. We demonstrate that differences in cycling performance and mode of failure are due to the differences in SEs. We also highlight that the key limitation in implementing Li metal as an anode in ASSBs is the dendrite formation and mechanical instability. These findings again emphasize the importance of coating active materials, the introduction of a buffer layer between the SE/Li metal interface, coating of SE, or the need for using composite/hybrid or bilayer solid electrolytes at least.

Abstract

International audience; Hexamethylguanidinium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide ([HMG][FSI]) has recently been shown to be a promising solid state organic ionic plastic crystal with potential application in advanced alkali metal batteries. This study provides a detailed exploration of the structural and dynamic behavior of [HMG][FSI] mixtures with the sodium salt NaFSI across the whole composition range from 0 to 100 mol%. All mixtures are solids at room temperature. A combination of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), synchrotron X-ray diffraction (SXRD) and multinuclear solid state NMR spectroscopy is employed to identify a partial phase diagram. The 25 mol% NaFSI/75 mol% [HMG][FSI] composition presents as the eutectic composition with the eutectic transition temperature at 44 ° C. Both DSC and SXRD strongly support the formation of a new compound near 50 mol% NaFSI. Interestingly, the 53 mol% NaFSI [HMG][FSI] composition was consistently found to display features of a pure compound whereas the 50 mol% materials always showed a second phase. Many of the compositions examined showed unusual metastable behaviour. Moreover, the ion dynamics as determined by NMR, indicate that the Na(+) and FSI(-) anions are signifcantly more mobile than the HMG cation in the liquid state (including the metastable state) for these materials.

Abstract

International audience; Mn(II)-oxidizing organisms promote the biomineralization of manganese oxides with specific textures, under ambient conditions. Controlling the phases formed and their texture on a larger scale may offer environmentally relevant routes to manganese oxide synthesis, with potential technological applications, for example, for energy storage. In the present study, we sought to use biofilms to promote the formation of electroactive minerals and to control the texture of these biominerals down to the electrode scale (i.e., cm scale). We used the bacterium Pseudomonas putida strain MnB1 which can produce manganese oxide in a biofilm. We characterized the biofilm–mineral assembly using a combination of electron microscopy, synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Under optimized conditions of biofilm growth on the surface of current collectors, mineralogical characterizations revealed the formation of several minerals including a slightly crystalline MnOx birnessite. Electrochemical measurements in a half-cell against Li(0) revealed the electrochemical signature of the Mn4+/Mn3+ redox couple indicating the electroactivity of the biomineralized biofilm without any post-synthesis chemical, physical or thermal treatment. These results provide a better understanding of the properties of biomineralized biofilms and their possible use in designing new routes for one-pot electrode synthesis.

Abstract

(1) Background: Many human diseases are associated with oxidative stress, which is caused by reactive oxygen species and free radicals generated in living cells. Some biomass extracts derived from various types of plants can act as efficient drugs against pathological disorders related to oxidative stress. Numerous herbal blends have thus been shown to improve health. Cleistocalyx operculatus (Roxb.) Merr. and L.M.Perry teas have been considered in that way. Problem: Because of amertume, the taste of C. operculatus avoids or limits a large use of such alleged healthy leaf infusions. (2) Methods: The phytochemistry, oxygen, free radical scavenging activity, and antilipid peroxidation of C. operculatus teas were here studied in vitro. Then different mixes of C. operculatus and Mentha arvensis were infused together and tasted in a hedonic test. The chemical and biological properties of the best mix were then analyzed. (3) Results: The herbal blend of C. operculatus revealed significant scavenging effects on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) with IC50 values of 35.6 µg/mL. Induced by hydroxyl radicals, this beverage could significantly inhibit the lipid peroxidation of mouse brain homogenates. Our results demonstrate that the lipid peroxidation inhibition of dried leaves of C. operculatus might be related to its scavenging effects on oxygen free radicals. This C. operculatus bitter blend was then combined with various amounts of M. arvensis Linn. The taste was evaluated, and further biochemical analyses were conducted on the best 7/3 ratio. They showed that the healthy properties were maintained. (4) Conclusion: The optimized 7/3 ratio of the Cleistocalyx/Mentha mix led to the best results in terms of taste (sensory tests). It is demonstrated that the potential health benefits against oxidative stress remained high as compared with pure C. operculatus infusion.

Abstract

Pistacia lentiscus L. is a medicinal plant that grows spontaneously throughout the Mediterranean basin and is traditionally used to treat diseases, including diabetes. The aim of this work consists of the evaluation of the α-glucosidase inhibitory effect (i.e., antidiabetic activity in vitro) of different extracts from the leaves, stem barks and fruits of P. lentiscus harvested on mountains and the littoral of Tizi-Ouzou in Algeria. Metabolomic profiling combined with a chemometric approach highlighted the variation of the antidiabetic properties of P. lentiscus according to the plant’s part and origin. A multiblock OPLS analysis showed that the metabolites most involved in α-glucosidase inhibition activity were mainly found in the stem bark extracts. The highest inhibitory activity was found for the stem bark extracts, with averaged inhibition percentage values of 84.7% and 69.9% for the harvested samples from the littoral and mountain, respectively. On the other hand, the fruit extracts showed a lower effect (13.6%) at both locations. The UHPLC-ESI-HRMS characterization of the metabolites most likely responsible for the α-glucosidase-inhibitory activity allowed the identification of six compounds: epigallocatechin(4a>8)epigallocatechin (two isomers), (epi)gallocatechin-3′-O-galloyl-(epi)gallocatechin (two isomers), 3,5-O-digalloylquinic acid and dihydroxy benzoic acid pentoside.

Abstract

The optimization of the electrodes manufacturing process constitutes one of the most critical steps to ensure high-quality Lithium-Ion Battery (LIB) cells, in particular for automotive applications. Because LIB electrode manufacturing is a complex process involving multiple steps and interdependent parameters, we have shown in our previous works that 3D-resolved physics-based models constitute very useful tools to provide insights about the impact of the manufacturing process parameters on the textural and performance properties of the electrodes. However, their high-throughput application for electrode properties optimization and inverse design of manufacturing parameters is limited due to the high computational cost associated with this kind of model. In this work, we tackle this issue by proposing an innovative approach, supported by a deterministic machine learning (ML)-assisted pipeline for multi-objective optimization of LIB electrode properties and inverse design of its manufacturing process. Firstly, the pipeline generates a synthetic dataset from physics-based simulations with low discrepancy sequences, that allow to sufficiently represent the manufacturing parameters space. Secondly, the generated dataset is used to train deterministic ML models for the implementation of a fast multi-objective optimization, to identify an optimal electrode and the manufacturing parameters to adopt in order to fabricate it. Lastly, this electrode was successfully fabricated experimentally, proving that our modeling pipeline prediction is physical-relevant. Here, we demonstrate our pipeline for the simultaneous minimization of the electrode tortuosity factor and maximization of the effective electronic conductivity, the active surface area, and the density, all being parameters that affect the Li$^+$ (de-)intercalation kinetics, ionic, and electronic transport properties of the electrode.

Abstract

International audience; The rapeseed crop is susceptible to many pathogens such as parasitic plants or fungi attacking aerial or root parts. Conventional plant protection products, used intensively in agriculture, have a negative impact on the environment as well as on human health. There is therefore a growing demand for the development of more planet-friendly alternative protection methods such as biocontrol compounds. Natural rhamnolipids (RLs) can be used as elicitors of plant defense mechanisms. These glycolipids, from bacteria secretome, are biodegradable, non-toxic and are known for their stimulating and protective effects, in particular on rapeseed against filamentous fungi. Characterizing the organ responsiveness to defense-stimulating compounds such as RLs is missing. This analysis is crucial in the frame of optimizing the effectiveness of RLs against various diseases. A Tandem Mass Tags (TMT) labeling of the proteins extracted from the shoots and roots of rapeseed has been performed and showed a differential pattern of protein abundance between them. Quantitative proteomic analysis highlighted the differential accumulation of parietal and cytoplasmic defense or stress proteins in response to RL treatments with a clear effect of the type of application (foliar spraying or root absorption). These results must be considered for further use of RLs to fight specific rapeseed pathogens.

Abstract

BackgroundSurvivors of severe-to-critical coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) may have functional impairment, radiological sequelae and persistent symptoms requiring prolonged follow-up. This pragmatic study aimed to describe their clinical follow-up and determine their respiratory recovery trajectories, and the factors that could influence them and their health-related quality of life.MethodsAdults hospitalised for severe-to-critical COVID-19 were evaluated at 3 months and up to 12 months post-hospital discharge in this prospective, multicentre, cohort study.ResultsAmong 485 enrolled participants, 293 (60%) were reassessed at 6 months and 163 (35%) at 12 months; 89 (51%) and 47 (27%) of the 173 participants initially managed with standard oxygen were reassessed at 6 and 12 months, respectively. At 3 months, 34%, 70% and 56% of the participants had a restrictive lung defect, impaired diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide (DLCO) and significant radiological sequelae, respectively. During extended follow-up, bothDLCOand forced vital capacity percentage predicted increased by means of +4 points at 6 months and +6 points at 12 months. Sex, body mass index, chronic respiratory disease, immunosuppression, pneumonia extent or corticosteroid use during acute COVID-19 and prolonged invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) were associated withDLCOat 3 months, but not its trajectory thereafter. Among 475 (98%) patients with at least one chest computed tomography scan during follow-up, 196 (41%) had significant sequelae on their last images.ConclusionsAlthough pulmonary function and radiological abnormalities improved up to 1 year post-acute COVID-19, high percentages of severe-to-critical disease survivors, including a notable proportion of those managed with standard oxygen, had significant lung sequelae and residual symptoms justifying prolonged follow-up.

Abstract

International audience; The hop plant (Humulus lupulus L.) has been exploited for a long time for both its brewing and medicinal uses, due in particular to its specific chemical composition. These last years, hop cultivation that was in decline has been experiencing a renewal for several reasons, such as a craze for strongly hopped aromatic beers. In this context, the present work aims at investigating the genetic and chemical diversity of fifty wild hops collected from different locations in Northern France. These wild hops were compared to ten commercial varieties and three heirloom varieties cultivated in the same sampled geographical area. Genetic analysis relying on genome fingerprinting using 11 microsatellite markers showed a high level of diversity. A total of 56 alleles were determined with an average of 10.9 alleles per locus and assessed a significant population structure (mean pairwise FST = 0.29). Phytochemical characterization of hops was based on volatile compound analysis by HS-SPME GC-MS, quantification of the main prenylated phenolic compounds by UHPLC-UV as well as untargeted metabolomics by UHPLC-HRMS and revealed a high level of chemical diversity among the assessed wild ac-cessions. In particular, analysis of volatile compounds revealed the presence of some minor but original com-pounds, such as aromadendrene, allo-aromadendrene, isoledene, fl-guaiene, alpha-ylangene and fl-pinene in some wild accessions; while analysis of phenolic compounds showed high content of fl-acids in these wild accessions, up to 2.37% of colupulone. Genetic diversity of wild hops previously observed was hence supported by their chemical diversity. Sample soil analysis was also performed to get a pedological classification of these different collection sites. Results of the multivariate statistical analysis suggest that wild hops constitute a huge pool of chemical and genetic diversity of this species.

Abstract

International audience; Developing advanced electrolytes or electrode materials for Li-ion batteries heavily relies on the use of performance metrics, among which capacity retention and Coulombic efficiency remain the gold standards. While powerful at predicting initial degradation rates, these metrics fall short of predicting knee points that can abruptly lead to the sudden death of battery cells. Indeed, knee points often originate from complex interplays between electrodes, through a cascade of parasitic reactions or the modification of the cell balancing. In this work, we analyze and demonstrate how combining adequate electrochemical testing protocols, coupled with advanced electrochemical analysis, allows for disentangling effects as complex as the crosstalking events for selected graphite Ni-rich cell chemis-tries. We believe that, using this set of workflows, a comprehensive analysis of capacity retention curves can be accurately carried out. This approach should become the new standard for screening novel electrolytes and materials for high-performance battery chemistries.
