Abstract

Let $S=\{p_1, \dots, p_r,\infty\}$ for prime integers $p_1, \dots, p_r.$ Let $X$ be an $S$-adic compact nilmanifold, equipped with the unique translation invariant probability measure $\mu.$ We characterize the countable groups $\Gamma$ of automorphisms of $X$ for which the Koopman representation $\kappa$ on $L^2(X,\mu)$ has a spectral gap. More specifically, we show that $\kappa$ does not have a spectral gap if and only if there exists a non-trivial $\Gamma$-invariant quotient solenoid (that is, a finite-dimensional, connected, compact abelian group) on which $\Gamma$ acts as a virtually abelian group., Comment: 25 pages

Abstract

Background The aim of this study was to review, systematically, evidence concerning the link between the ACTN3 R577X polymorphism and the rates and severity of non-contact injuries and exercise-induced muscle damage in athletes and individuals enrolled in exercise training programs. Methods A computerized literature search was performed in the electronic databases PubMed, Web of Science, and SPORTDiscus, from inception until November 2020. All included studies compared the epidemiological characteristics of non-contact injury between the different genotypes of the ACTN3 R577X polymorphism. Results Our search identified 492 records. After the screening of titles, abstracts, and full texts, 13 studies examining the association between the ACTN3 genotypes and the rate and severity of non-contact injury were included in the analysis. These studies were performed in 6 different countries (Spain, Japan, Brazil, China, Republic of Korea, and Italy) and involved a total participant pool of 1093 participants. Of the studies, 2 studies involved only women, 5 studies involved only men, and 6 studies involved both men and women. All the studies included were classified as high-quality studies (≥6 points in the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) scale score). Overall, evidence suggests there is an association between the ACTN3 R577X genotype and non-contact injury in 12 investigations. Six studies observed a significant association between ACTN3 R577X polymorphism and exercise induced muscle damage: two with non-contact ankle injury, three with non-contact muscle injury, and one with overall non-contact injury. Conclusion The present findings support the premise that possessing the ACTN3 XX genotype may predispose athletes to a higher probability of some non-contact injuries, such as muscle injury, ankle sprains, and higher levels of exercise-induced muscle damage.

Abstract

International audience; In the sub-Antarctic region, climate change is particularly rapid, while their freshwater ecosystems, such as ponds, host plant species with limited spatial distributions. These particular systems and their plant communities remain however poorly known and the context of their changing habitat calls for deeper insights into these systems. We performed an extensive survey of 45 ponds over three locations of the Iles Kerguelen during the winter and summer seasons of two years, which included the measurement of 12 abiotic parameters and the assessment of the plant community composition. Overall, our results showed that Iles Kerguelen ponds are shallow freshwater ecosystems harbouring species-poor plant communities with high even- ness, of which structure did not vary among the sampled locations. Three different habitats were identified among ponds in relation with nutrient supply by marine animals, which ultimately influenced plant community structure and cover. We highlight that these habitats are mostly determined by water depth, nutrients, and temperature (mean and variance). Present plant community composition was more strongly correlated with plant community composition in the previous year than with abiotic conditions. Overall, this study provides new knowledge on the aquatic plant communities and the functioning of Iles Kerguelen freshwater ecosystems, which can serve as a basis for future studies dealing with the impact of climate change in the sub-Antarctic region.

Abstract

We study its controllability around the ground state when the linearized system is not controllable and wonder whether the quadratic term can help to recover the directions lost at the first order. More precisely, in this paper, we formulate assumptions under which the quadratic term induces a drift which prevents the small-time local controllability (STLC) of the system in appropriate spaces. For finite-dimensional systems, quadratic terms induce coercive drifts in the dynamic, quantified by integer negative Sobolev norms, along explicit Lie brackets which prevent STLC.In the context of the bilinear Schr{\"o}dinger equation, the first drift, quantified by the $H^{-1}$-norm of the control, was already observed and used to deny STLC with controls small in $L^\infty$. In this article, we improve this result by denying STLC with controls small in $W^{-1, \infty}$. Furthermore, for any positive integer $n$, we formulate assumptions under which one may observe a quadratic drift quantified by the $H^{-n}$-norm of the control and we use it to deny STLC in suitable spaces.

Abstract

International audience; Context : Flower-visiting insects depend on floral resource availability from both cultivated and semi-natural habitats in agricultural landscapes. Landscape studies exploring insect abundance mainly focus on land cover maps without considering plant species within. Highlighting the functional role of landscapes through the potential floral resources they provide is an overlooked innovative approach. Objectives : We aimed to identify traits of floral communities that are important, across several spatial scales, for explaining the abundance of flower-visiting insects. Mapping and quantifying potential floral resources according to their attractivity, accessibility and profitability in both crop and non-crop habitats was performed to gain insights into flower-vising insect requirements. Methods : We translated land-cover maps of 39 landscapes of 250 m, 500 m and 1000 m radius into potential floral resource maps, using pre-existing vegetation surveys and floral traits databases. In the centres of the landscapes, the abundance of flower-visiting insect groups (domestic and wild bees, bumblebees and hoverflies) were recorded in organic winter cereal fields. We then fitted Generalized Linear Models (GLMs) to investigate the effects of flower trait variables (pre-selected with conditional random forests) at both field and landscape scales on the abundance of each flower-visiting insect group. Results : Floral resource maps explained the abundances of flower-visiting insect groups. Small wild bees (< 1 cm) responded positively to the relative amount of attractive and accessible floral resources at 250 m. The abundance of domestic bees and bumblebees was positively correlated with the relative amount of high nectar producing plants at 1000 m. The abundance of hoverflies was positively influenced by the relative amount of actinomorphic flowers (i.e., those with radial symmetry), at 1000 m.Conclusion : Resource maps could explain flower-visiting insect abundances, identify which category of floral resources organisms require, and determine in which habitat types these resources prevail. These results open a new research area related to managing the environment by optimising floral resources for flower-visiting insect conservation and pollination maintenance.

Abstract

International audience; Bilebullephlebia legendrei n. gen., n. sp. is described, illustrated, and placed into the small epiproctophoran family Burmaphlebiidae. This family was previously known from the mid-Cretaceous Kachin amber by two monotypic genera, but the new fossil shows that its diversity is underestimated. At least one additional genus with an enigmatic wing venation remains to be described from the same deposit. Nothing is known about the genitalia configuration of the Burmaphlebiidae but new fossils are expected to clarify the position of the family which is currently only discussed in light of wing venation characters.

Abstract

The transition from a greenhouse to an icehouse world at the Eocene-Oligocene Transition (EOT) coincided with a large decrease of pollen from the steppe-adapted genus Nitraria. This genus, now common along the Mediterranean coast, Asia and Australia, has a proposed coastal origin and a geographically widespread fossil record. Here we investigated the evolution, taxonomic diversity and morphological disparity of Nitraria throughout the Cenozoic by integrating extant taxa and fossil palynological morphotypes into a unified phylogenetic framework based on both DNA sequences and pollen morphological data. We present the oldest fossil pollen grain of Nitraria, at least 53 Myr old. This fossil was found in Central Asian deposits, providing new evidence for its origin in this area. We found that the EOT is an evolutionary bottleneck for Nitraria, coinciding with retreat of the proto-Paratethys Sea, a major global cooling event and a turnover in Central Asian steppe vegetation. We infer the crown age of modern Nitraria spp. to be significantly younger (Miocene) than previously estimated (Palaeocene). The diversity trajectory of Nitraria inferred from extant-only taxa differs markedly from one that also considers extinct taxa. Our study demonstrates it is therefore critical to apply an integrative approach to fully understand the plant evolutionary history of Nitrariaceae.

Abstract

International audience; The structural organization of heterogeneous and multiphase natural aggregates depends on the biophysicochemical conditions prevailing in the environment, with major ions playing a crucial role. In this study, the impact of aluminum (Al) on iron-organic matter (Fe-OM) aggregates was investigated since Al can interact with OM and can be incorporated in Fe-oxyhydroxides or adsorbed on their surface. Mimetic environmental Fe-OM-Al aggregates were synthesized at various [Fe] and [Al] with a constant [OM]. At low [Al+Fe], Fe-OM-Al aggregates exhibit a colloidal behavior. Within the aggregates, Fe is present as Fe(III)-oligomers and ferrihydrite-like nanoparticles whereas Al forms monomers, oligomers and small polymers, all bound to OM. The Al and Fe phases interacted with each other. At high [Fe+Al], the Fe(III)-oligomers and Al monomers/oligomers polymerized which increases the size and quantity of the ferrihydrite-like nanoparticles and Al polymers and then branched out the OM, resulting in a large settling network. The effect of Al on the Fe-OM aggregates structure could also have an impact on the fate of pollutants. The occurrence of Al amorphous hydroxides and the increase in ferrihydrite-like nanoparticles lead to a higher availability of surface reactive sites and subsequently to an increase in the sorption capacity of the Fe-OM aggregates for pollutants that exhibit a greater affinity for minerals than for organics.

Abstract

Variation in species richness across the tree of life, accompanied by the incredible variety of ecological and morphological characteristics found in nature, has inspired many studies to link traits with species diversification. Angiosperms are a highly diverse group that has fundamentally shaped life on earth since the Cretaceous, and illustrate how species diversification affects ecosystem functioning. Numerous traits and processes have been linked to differences in species richness within this group, but we know little about how these interact and their relative importance. Here, we synthesized data from 152 studies that used state-dependent speciation and extinction (SSE) models on angiosperm clades. Intrinsic traits related to reproduction and morphology were often linked to diversification but a set of universal drivers did not emerge as traits did not have consistent effects across clades. Importantly, dataset properties were correlated to SSE model results - trees that were larger, older, or less well-sampled tended to yield trait-dependent outcomes. We compared these properties to recommendations for SSE model use and provide a set of best practices to follow when designing studies and reporting results. Finally, we argue that SSE model inferences should be considered in a larger context incorporating species’ ecology, demography and genetics.

Abstract

Hybridization and polyploidy are key evolutionary forces in plant diversification, and their co-occurrence in the context of allopolyploid speciation is often associated with increased ability to colonize new environments and invasiveness. In the genus Ulex (Fabaceae), the European gorse (Ulex europaeus subsp. europaeus) is the only invasive and the only polyploid that has recently spread in different eco-geographical regions across the world. Understanding what confers such ecological advantages to this species, compared to its diploid and polyploid congeners, first requires clarification of the ecogeographical and evolutionary context of its formation. To achieve this, the geographical distributions of all Ulex spp. were estimated from species occurrence records, and phylogenetic analyses including all Ulex spp. were performed based on four nuclear (ITS and ETS nrDNA) and plastid (rps12 intron and trnK-matK) regions. The resulting trees were dated using a secondary calibration. Patterns of DNA sequence variation and dated phylogenetic trees were then interpreted in light of previous knowledge of chromosome numbers in Ulex to infer past events of polyploid speciation in the genus. We show that: (1) most current Ulex spp. radiated in the Iberian Peninsula during the past 1–2 Myr; (2) the history of Ulex was punctuated by multiple whole-genome duplication events; and (3) U. europaeus subsp. europaeus is the only gorse taxon that was formed by hybridization of two well-differentiated lineages (which separated c. 5 Mya) with wide climatic ranges (currently represented by Ulex minor and Ulex europaeus subsp. latebracteatus), possibly contributing to the invasive nature and wider climatic range of U. europaeus subsp. europaeus. These findings provide a much-needed evolutionary framework in which to explore the adaptive consequences of genome mergers and duplication in Ulex.

Abstract

International audience; Despite the wide availability of large motion databases, and recent advances in exploiting them to create tailored contents, artists still spend tremendous efforts in editing and adapting existing character animations to new contexts. This motion editing problem is a well-addressed research topic. Yet only a few approaches have considered the influence of the camera angle, and the resulting visual features it yields, as a mean to control and warp a character animation. This paper proposes the design of viewpoint-dependent motion warping units that perform subtle updates on animations through the specification of visual motion features such as visibility, or spatial extent. We express the problem as a specific case of visual servoing, where the warping of a given character motion is regulated by a number of visual features to enforce. Results demonstrate the relevance of the approach for different motion editing tasks and its potential to empower virtual characters with attention-aware communication abilities.

Abstract

A research to study the zooplanktonic population in relation to some abiotic variables of the Kribian coast waters was conducted from July to December 2020 following a monthly sampling in six (6) selected sites. The physicochemical parameters were determining out using standard methods. Concerning the zooplankton, the water was collected at the surface, in the trophogenic and tropholytic layers, then filtered through a 64 µm plankton sieve and the retentate was fixed with 96% alcohol. Identification and counting were done in the laboratory using a Wild M5 binocular loupe, appropriate keys and works. The physicochemical results showed a very good oxygenation of the waters (91.85 ± 3.87%), basic pH (8.43 ± 0.54 U.C), a low salinity and conductivity of respectively 13.04 ± 3.92 g/L and 23.07±4.23 µS/cm characteristic of the haline domains and a temperature of 28.66 ± 1.35°C. With regard to nutrients, the values recorded showed a progressive enrichment of the water in nitrate (2.2±1.81mg/L) and a low concentration in orthophosphate (0.25±0.41mg/L). the zooplankton community haboured, 54 taxa belonging to 3 major groups (Copepoda, Cladocera, Ciliate) and other Zooplankton, 24 families and 29 genera were recorded. The Copepod group dominated the taxonomic richness with 34 taxa (62.96% of total richness), followed by Tintinidae with 4 taxa (7.4%), Cladocera with 1 marine taxa (1.9%) and 15 taxa for other zooplankton (27.8%). Quantitatively, Copepods were once again the most abundant group in the population, with an average of 78.3% of the total zooplankton abundance. The dominant copepod taxa in terms of abundance were those of the families of: Paracalanidae (mean abundance: 116 ind/L) and Oithonidae (mean abundance: 99ind/L).

Abstract

International audience; Plastic has been largely detected in estuarine environments and represents major concern towards aquatic living organisms. The present study evaluates the impact of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) under realistic exposure conditions. Scrobicularia plana individuals were exposed to low concentrations (0.008, 10, and 100 µg L−1) of environmental MPs and NPs as well as to standard PS NPs, as a comparison condition. The aim of this study was to understand the ecotoxicological effects of environmental plastic particles on S. plana gills and digestive glands but also to compare the effects of plastic polymers size in order to highlight if the size could induce different toxicity profiles within this model organism, at different levels of biological organization. Results showed a differential induction of detoxification enzymes (CAT, GST), immunity (AcP), DNA damage processes as well as a differential effect on behavior and condition index of animals depending upon the type of plastic, the size, the concentration tested, and the type of organ. This study underlines the necessity of testing (i) plastics collected from the environment as compared to standard ones and (ii) the effect of size using plastics coming from the same batch of macrosized plastics. This study concludes on the future need directions that plastic-based studies must take in order to be able to generate a large quantity of relevant data that could be used for future regulatory needs on the use of plastic.

Abstract

International audience; Wetlands are the largest natural source of methane (CH4) to the atmosphere. The eddy covariance method provides robust measurements of net ecosystem exchange of CH4, but interpreting its spatiotemporal variations is challenging due to the co-occurrence of CH4 production, oxidation, and transport dynamics. Here, we estimate these three processes using a data-model fusion approach across 25 wetlands in temperate, boreal, and Arctic regions. Our data-constrained model—iPEACE—reasonably reproduced CH4 emissions at 19 of the 25 sites with normalized root mean square error of 0.59, correlation coefficient of 0.82, and normalized standard deviation of 0.87. Among the three processes, CH4 production appeared to be the most important process, followed by oxidation in explaining inter-site variations in CH4 emissions. Based on a sensitivity analysis, CH4 emissions were generally more sensitive to decreased water table than to increased gross primary productivity or soil temperature. For periods with leaf area index (LAI) of ≥20% of its annual peak, plant-mediated transport appeared to be the major pathway for CH4 transport. Abstract

International audience; The objective of the paper is to better understand and quantify the flow structure in fractured rocks from flow logs, and to propose relevant indicators for validating, calibrating or even rejecting hydrogeological models. We first studied what the inflow distribution tells us about the permeability structure from a series of analyses: distribution of transmissivities as a function of depth, proportion of flowing sections as a function of section scale, and scaling of the arithmetically-averaged and geometrically-averaged permeability. We then define three indicators that describe few fundamental characteristics of the flow/permeability, whatever the scale: a percolation scale , the way permeability increases with scale above , and the variability of permeability. A 4th indicator on the representative elemental volume could in principle be defined but the data show that this volume/scale is beyond the 300 m investigated. We tested a series of numerical models built in three steps: the geo-DFN based on the observed fracture network, the open-DFN which is the part of the geo-DFN where fractures are open, and a transmissivity model applying on each fracture of the open-DFN (Discrete Fracture Network). The analysis of the models showed that the percolation scale is controlled by the open-DFN structure and that the percolation scale can be predicted from a scale analysis of the percolation parameter (basically, the third moment of the fracture size distribution that provides a measure of the network connectivity). The way permeability increases with scale above the percolation threshold is controlled by the transmissivity model and in particular by the dependence of the fracture transmissivity on either the orientation of the fractures via a stress-controlled transmissivity or their size or both. The comparison with data on the first two indicators shows that a model that matches the characteristics of the geo-DFN with an open fraction of 15% as measured adequately fits the data provided that the large fractures remain open and that the fracture transmissivity model is well selected. Most of the other models show unacceptable differences with data but other models or model combinations has still to be explored before rejecting them. The third indicator on model variability is still problematic since the natural data show a higher variability than the models but the open fraction is also much more variable in the data than in the models.

Abstract

International audience; Fat reserves, specifically the accumulation of triacylglycerols, are a major energy source and play a key role for life histories. Fat accumulation is a conserved metabolic pattern across most insects, yet in most parasitoid species adults do not gain fat mass, even when nutrients are readily available and provided ad libitum. This extraordinary physiological phenotype has evolved repeatedly in phylogenetically dispersed parasitoid species. This poses a conundrum because it could lead to significant constraints on energy allocation toward key adult functions such as survival and reproduction. Recent work on the underlying genetic and biochemical mechanisms has spurred a debate on fat accumulation versus fat production, because of incongruent interpretation of results obtained using different methodologies. This debate is in part due to semantics, highlighting the need for a synthetic perspective on fat accumulation that reconciles previous debates and provides new insights and terminology. In this paper, we propose updated, unambiguous terminology for future research in the field, including "fatty acid synthesis" and "lack of adult fat accumulation", and describe the distinct metabolic pathways involved in the complex process of lipogenesis. We then discuss the benefits and drawbacks of the main methods available to measure fatty acid synthesis and adult fat accumulation. Most importantly, gravimetric/colorimetric and isotope tracking methods give complementary information, provided that they are applied with appropriate controls and interpreted correctly. We also compiled a comprehensive list of fat accumulation studies performed during the last 25 years. We present avenues for future research that combine chemistry, ecology, and evolution into an integrative approach, which we think is needed to understand the dynamics of fat accumulation in parasitoids.

We characterize geometrically the regularizing effects of the semigroups generated by accretive non-selfadjoint quadratic differential operators. As a byproduct, we establish the subelliptic estimates enjoyed by these operators, being expected to be optimal. These results prove conjectures by M. Hitrik, K. Pravda-Starov and J. Viola. The proof relies on a new representation of the polar decomposition of these semigroups. Abstract

International audience; The relative contributions of agricultural intensity and semi-natural habitats to the multifunctionality and sustainability of ecosystems at different spatial scales remain largely under-investigated. In this study, we assessed the multifunctionality of 40 winter cereal fields and 40 hedgerows based on ecological, agronomic and socio-economic performance using data from field surveys and interviews with farmers. We specifically focused on the effects of local farming systems (organic vs. conventional) and management (cereals intercropped with legumes vs. monocrops), the effects of landscape heterogeneity related to hedgerow density, and the spatial extent of semi-natural habitat and organic farming. Multifunctionality indices associated with increased values of proxies for biodiversity conservation and pest control functions were higher for hedgerows than crop fields. Agroecosystem multifunctionality was similar between organic and conventional farming as a consequence of antagonistic responses of individual function proxies. While organic farming promoted the ecological performance of crops, conventional farming resulted in higher agronomic performance (i.e. yield). Interestingly, lower yields of organic crops were not systematically associated with reductions in socio-economic performance in terms of farmer income and labour. At the landscape scale, hedgerow density and the extent of semi-natural habitats and organic farming had little influence on agroecosystem multifunctionality or individual function proxies. Synthesis and applications. Our results confirm the high value of hedgerows and organic farming at the local scale for the ecological performance of ecosystems. Our study suggests that, among existing agri-environment schemes in Europe, hedgerow planting and organic farming are appropriate tools to optimise the ecological performance of ecosystems at the local scale even if antagonistic effects with agronomic performance should not be neglected.

Abstract

International audience; Small shallow lakes (SSLs) have great conservation value and support numerous ecosystem services. However, these small ecosystems are faced with many threats, including eutrophication, which tends to shift biodiverse SSLs to a turbid state dominated by phytoplankton. The ecological quality of SSLs still remains poorly evaluated because of the lack of adapted tools. We propose a new trophic index-TIM2S-based on the tolerance range of 245 macrophyte species to total phosphorus. As a single trophic index can favour oligotrophic ecosystems and their associated species to the detriment of more eutrophic but rare species, we converted TIM2S into a predictive reference-based model. Then, we compared TIM2S with five existing trophic indices in their efficiency to discriminate trophic levels and disentangle eight anthropogenic or internal pressures. TIM2S was the only index strongly correlated with total phosphorus and able to discriminate trophic levels. Most existing trophic indices are expert-based, and reflect community alteration rather than eutrophication. These expert-based indices are also dependent on numerous environmental factors, highlighting the need for robust predictive models to evaluate ecological statuses accurately. TIM2S is Water Framework Directive-compatible and can be used widely in Europe to evaluate the trophic status and trophic alterations of SSLs.

Despite its importance, nectar productivity has mainly been assessed using one sampling method, in which the volume of nectar produced by a flower is measured after 24 h of isolation from insects (‘measured 24 h volume’ hereafter). This method assumes that nectar removal by flower-visiting insects does not affect nectar productivity. Hence, a linearity in the nectar production dynamic is assumed. The effect of nectar removal could lead to an actual volume of nectar produced per flower over 24 h being higher or lower than the measured 24 h volume. Whether the nectar productivity is influenced by insect activity still therefore needs to be assessed. In a field experiment, we estimated the nectar production dynamics of lavender (Lavandula hybrida) and fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) flowers and tested whether they met the linearity assumption. Then, we developed a simulation model to identify how different scenarios of insect foraging activity: nectar removal rate (average and maximum), and flower-selection strategies (random selection or rewarding flower selection) alter the estimated 24 h volume of nectar for both crops (‘estimated 24 h volume’ hereafter). Finally, we tested whether the estimated 24 h volume differed from the measured 24 h volume for both crops. Lavender and fennel showed equal measured 24 h volume of nectar but the produced nectar volume over 6 h suggested that a flower of lavender was more productive than a flower of fennel. Both nectar production dynamics did not meet the assumption of linearity. The simulation models showed that the estimated 24 h volume increased with maximum nectar removal rate for lavender, and the opposite was found for fennel. Rewarding selection always increased the estimated 24 h volume for fennel while for lavender a positive effect was detected at average rate of nectar removal. We found that the estimated 24 h volume was always greater than the measured 24 h volume. Our model demonstrated that the effect of insect foraging activity on flower's nectar productivity should be considered while estimating the resources produced by plants. As an alternative, measures of produced nectar volume in short time spans may be compared with the measured 24 h volume to check the reliability of this widespread method.

Abstract

In this work, we adapt the {\em micro-macro} methodology to stochastic differential equations for the purpose of numerically solving oscillatory evolution equations. The models we consider are addressed in a wide spectrum of regimes where oscillations may be slow or fast. We show that through an ad-hoc transformation (the micro-macro decomposition), it is possible to retain the usual orders of convergence of Euler-Maruyama method, that is to say, uniform weak order one and uniform strong order one half. We also show that the same orders of uniform accuracy can be achieved by a simple integral scheme. The advantage of the micro-macro scheme is that, in contrast to the integral scheme, it can be generalized to higher order methods.

Abstract

International audience; 12 The Early Cretaceous topographic evolution of Transbaikalia was largely governed by the 13 tectonic evolution of the Mongol-Okhotsk orogenic belt. The collapse of the Mongol-Okhotsk 14 orogen triggered the formation of metamorphic core complexes and associated extensional basins, 15 widespread throughout Transbaikalia, North Mongolia, and North China. Numerous lithofacies proximal sediment sources. Distal provinces also made a contribution to sedimentation indicating 29 the rise of a positive topography characterizing the exhumation of the metamorphic core 30 complexes. Overlying fine-grained formations indicate a significant smoothing of the topography, 31 suggesting that from middle Aptian, Western Transbaikalia developed in a relatively calm tectonic 32 regime. We also show that the basins of Transbaikalia were formed both in conjunction with the 33 exhumation of metamorphic cores complexes and reactivated structural sutures. Revised data on 34 dinosaur fauna and palynology, together with the dating of host deposits, provide insights on the 35 Early Cretaceous paleoenvironmental evolution.

Abstract

International audience; Adaptation of wild insects to an artificial laboratory environment goes hand in hand with changes in their genetic diversity and symbiotic communities. This can have a profound effect on mass rearing of insects since their biological quality and mating competitiveness might be reduced. Patterns of genetic and symbiotic variation associated with laboratory adaptation vary among species and identifying the agents of selection that drive such patterns can be extremely helpful for pest control programmes. In the present study, we profiled the genetic and symbiotic structure of a wild Drosophila suzukii population and monitored their changes during laboratory adaptation. We employed sixteen microsatellite markers and tracked the fluctuation of their frequencies as domestication was progressing. We also used 16S rRNA sequencing to depict changes in the microbiota structure. Changes in effective and observed allele numbers and heterozygosity became evident from F10, while between F0 and F6 a gradual decline was observed. The microbiota profile of D. suzukii also formed distinct clusters during adaptation as F0 and F1 were differentiated by the rest generations and presented the highest bacterial diversity. Overall, our results showed that laboratory adaptation strongly affects both genetic diversity and bacterial communities of D. suzukii. These results can serve as a reference for the design of an area-wide integrated pest management approach with a Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) component. Rearing productivity, biological quality, and mating competitiveness of a SIT mass-reared strain should be assessed in connection with genetic and symbiotic changes occurring during laboratory adaptation.

Abstract

Jurassic carbonate strata in the eastern Paris Basin exhibit several generations of faults, tension gashes and stylolites. Although their relative chronology can sometimes be determined according to cross-cutting relationships, the duration of major deformation phases and their influence on fluid flow and carbonate cementation are still uncertain. This contribution aims to clarify the timing of brittle deformation and associated calcite cementation. Tension gashes filled by calcite in Jurassic carbonates were sampled in outcrops and boreholes and dated through U–Pb geochronology. Almost all the sampled fractures were cemented during the Cenozoic period. Continuous deformation spread from c. 50 to 30 Ma. Tension gashes oriented N10° to N20° dated at 48–43 Ma show the main Pyrenean contractional stage. A second set of calcites were dated at c. 35–33 Ma and document a Late Eocene – Oligocene extension. A transition from the compressional to the extensional regime is expressed by tension gashes dated between 43 and 35 Ma. Finally, tension gashes oriented N150° to N175°, dated between 32 and 18 Ma, may result from the propagation of the horizontal stress generated by the Alpine orogen or by late Pyrenean deformation. Clumped isotope thermometry on five samples revealed both low crystallization temperatures (from 27 to 53 °C) and the meteoric origin of calcite-precipitating fluids. Our research therefore documents a continuous fracturing from Ypresian to Rupelian times, and less expressed brittle deformation during the Miocene period.

Abstract

International audience; An ammonite biostratigraphy for Oxfordian in the Tlemcenian domain (northwestern Algeria) belonging to the south Tethyan margin is presented. It is based on the study of many sections located near Takhemaret and Frenda cities (Province of Tiaret). From bottom to top, the following biozones and subzones are distinguished: (i) Liosphinctes plicatilis Zone subdivided into the Cardioceras vertebrale (including the Otosphinctes arkelli Horizon) and Dichotomosphinctes antecedens subzone (including the Dichotomosphinctes antecedens Horizon); (ii) Gregoryceras transversarium Zone subdivided into four subzones: Perisphinctes parandieri, Dichotomosphinctes luciaeformis (its presence is doubtful), Larcheria schilli and Dichotomoceras rotoides subzones; (iii) Dichotomoceras bifurcatus Zone subdivided into two subzones: Dichotomoceras stenocycloides Subzone including the Dichotomoceras bifurcatoides Horizon, and the Dichotomoceras grossouvrei Subzone. The obtained results are compared and completed with those of Bou Rheddou and Bechtout (northern Tiaret city). The recorded biozones are very similar to the standard biozonation of the Upper Jurassic recognized throughout the Mediterranean region.

Abstract

Pools are common features of peatlands and can represent from 5 % to 50 % of the peatland ecosystem's surface area. Pools play an important role in the peatland carbon cycle by releasing carbon dioxide and methane to the atmosphere. However, the origin of this carbon is not well constrained. A hypothesis is that the majority of the carbon emitted from pools predominantly originates from mineralized allochthonous (i.e., plant-derived) dissolved organic matter (DOM) from peat rather than in situ primary production. To test this hypothesis, this study examined the origin, composition, and degradability of DOM in peat porewater and pools of an ombrotrophic boreal peatland in northeastern Quebec (Canada) for 2 years over the growing season. The temporal evolution of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration, the optical properties, molecular composition (THM-GC-MS), stable isotopic signature (δ13C-DOC), and degradability of DOM were determined. This study demonstrates that DOM, in both peat porewater and pools, presents a diverse composition and constitutes highly dynamic components of peatland ecosystems. The molecular and isotopic analyses showed that DOM in pools was derived from plants. However, DOM compositions in the two environments were markedly different. Peat porewater DOM was more aromatic, with a higher molecular weight and DOC : DON (dissolved organic nitrogen) ratio compared to pools. The temporal dynamics of DOC concentration and DOM composition also differed. In peat porewater, the DOC concentration followed a strong seasonal increase, starting from 9 mg L−1 and reaching a plateau above 20 mg L−1 in summer and autumn. This was explained by seasonal peatland vegetation productivity, which is greater than microbial DOM degradation. In pools, DOC concentration also increased but remained 2 times lower than in the peat porewaters at the end of the growing season (∼ 10 mg L−1). Those differences might be explained by a combination of physical, chemical, and biological factors. The limited hydraulic conductivity in deeper peat horizons and associated DOM residence time might have favored both DOM microbial transformation within the peat and the interaction of DOM aromatic compounds with the peat matrix, explaining part of the shift of DOM compositions between peat porewater and pools. This study did not report any photolability of DOM and only limited microbial degradability. Thus, it is likely that the DOM might have been microbially transformed at the interface between peat and pools. The combination of DOM quantitative and qualitative analyses presented in this study demonstrates that most of the carbon present within and released from the pools originates from peat vegetation. These results demonstrate that pools represent a key component of the peatland ecosystem ecological and biogeochemical functioning.

Abstract

International audience; The foundations of modern quantitative geomorphology have thus been built around this paradigm of steady-state landscapes responding to progressive changes in climatic or tectonic condition. In ice-free landscapes, the evolution of continental landforms over large time scales is generally described by a competition between tectonic uplift and erosion of rivers and hillslopes. The initiation of co-seismic landslides is generally attributed to the passage of seismic waves, and in particular to the peak ground acceleration associated with volume waves. The volume of landslides is then generally obtained using empirical scaling laws with their area. Co-seismic landslides have a geomorphological impact that goes beyond the co-seismic phase. The principle of a landscape at a steady state, with a balance between the rates of erosion and uplift, needs to be reconsidered due to the amplitude and variability of tectonic and geomorphological processes during the seismic cycle

Abstract

International audience; Reorganization of the Asian climate from one dominated by global planetary wind systems to a regional monsoon climate is closely related to the surface uplift of the Tibetan Plateau (TP). However, evaluating this climatic reorganization is limited by difficulty in constraining the complex, multistaged uplift of the TP and contradictory evidence regarding Asian Monsoon onset. In this Review, we summarize proxy and model evidence for Asian Monsoon initiation at different latitudes to identify the main controls on monsoon evolution. Stratigraphy and palaeoclimate proxy records indicate that the Asian climate was reorganized in a two-stage northward expansion process. At ~41 million years ago (Ma), the monsoon advanced northwards from the tropic to the southern subtropical regions (~26° N, approximately present-day Yunnan), probably driven by central TP uplift, global cooling and rapid regression of the proto-Paratethys Sea. At ~26 Ma, the monsoon expanded northwards into temperate regions (~30–36° N, equivalent to the present-day Asian Monsoon boundary), likely driven by TP growth and global warming. Additional proxy records are needed to fill regional gaps, establishing more solid boundary conditions and improving parameter constraints for climate models.

Abstract

International audience; Nonverbal communication is paramount in daily life, as well as in populated virtual reality (VR) environments. In this paper, we focused on gaze behaviour, which is key to initiate and drive social interactions. Previous work on photographs and on virtual agents showed the importance of gaze, even in the presence of multiple stimuli, by demonstrating the stare-in-the-crowd effect: humans detect faster and observe gazes directed towards them longer than the averted ones. While previous studies focused on static scenarios, which fail in representing the complexity of real-life social interactions, we propose to explore the stare-in-the-crowd effect in dynamic situations. To this end, we designed a within-subject experiment where 21 users navigated a virtual street through an idle or moving crowd of virtual agents. Agents’ gaze was manipulated to display averted, directed, or shifting gaze. We analysed the user’s gaze (fixations, dwell time) and locomotor behaviours (path decisions, proximity to agents) as well as their social anxiety. Results showed that the stare-in-the-crowd effect is preserved when walking through both types of crowd, and that social anxiety decreases gaze interaction time and affects proximity behaviours in case of agents with directed gazes. However, virtual agents’ gaze did not elicit significant changes on users’ locomotion. These findings highlight the importance of considering virtual agents’ gaze when creating VR environments, and open future work perspectives to better understand factors that would strengthen or decrease this effect at gaze and locomotor levels.

Abstract

International audience; The influence of human activities on bird song has been deeply investigated. However, disentangling the relative influence of different anthropogenic pressures (e.g., artificial lights at night, traffic noise, landscape artificialization), of landscape composition (e.g., surface of natural habitat, landscape richness and diversity) and of biotic conditions (bird abundance, richness and diversity) on bird song is still challenging. On the basis of a field survey conducted on a breeding bird community (37 species) in spring 2022 in France, we disentangle the relative influence of such factors of the timing of bird chorus both at the species and community levels. We find that species react differently to the different factors, with species more sensitive to anthropogenic factors and others to biotic conditions. This leads to an important temporal reassembly in the bird chorus at the community level, which promotes a higher temporal turnover in the most anthropized areas and a higher temporal nestedness in the most natural areas. Human activities are thus not only driving temporal changes in different bird species but also promote a change in the temporal structure of the chorus at the whole community.

Abstract

The timing of bird chorus (i.e. the daily highest period of vocal activity in singing birds) follows a circadian pattern but can be modified by anthropogenic factors, mainly including artificial lights at night (ALAN) and traffic noise. However, the impacts of ALAN and noise are rarely dissociated each other and almost never distinguished from other anthropic pressures. The second shortcoming is that the measurement of the timing of chorus is almost systematically based on the occurrence of the first song(s) of the model species, whereas the temporal pattern of the whole vocal activity is never taken into account. Through the example of the breeding birds in the Loire Estuary (France), we first dissociated the different facets of anthropization (ALAN, traffic noise, and land-use and land cover) through a geomatic approach and we analyzed the temporal pattern of bird vocalization through a method based on the recently developed deep neural network “BirdNET”. If ALAN and traffic noise influence the timing of bird chorus, we also found both that taking either a facet or another of anthropization but also different measures of the temporal pattern of bird chorus (e.g., the median time of all the vocalizations instead of the first songs) reveals different results. We thus propose a conceptual framework to measure different facets of anthropization but also different measures of temporal pattern of bird chorus to better understand the influence of human activities on bird vocalizations.

Abstract

International audience; This article presents an interdisciplinary study of two Late/Final Neolithic gallery graves (Kernic and Lerret) located on the orthwestern coast of Brittany (Western France). These monuments show striking similarities in terms of architectural style and geographical position. This paper aims to provide a better understanding of the construction strategy of these monuments by (i) determining the origin of the megalithic blocks using comparative petro-structural analyses of blocks and surrounding rocks, (ii) reconstructing the coastal environment from sediment core analyses and (iii) defining the significance of these monuments in the territories from an intervisibility analysis. The study reveals marked differences between the two monuments studied. The Lerret gallery grave was erected close to a unique source of stone material on the margins of a marshland zone. In contrast, the Kernic monument, erected on the edge of an estuary, seems to have been built using a deliberate diversification of stone extraction sites. An intervisibility analysis shows a dense network of visual interconnections between a number of megalithic tombs present in the study area, where the two monuments occupy very distinct sites. The social implications of stone selection and the geographical location of Late/Final Neolithic funerary monuments are also discussed in an enlarged regional context.

Abstract

We start from the remark that in wave turbulence theory, exemplified by the cubic twodimensional Schr{\"o}dinger equation (NLS) on the real plane, the regularity of the resonant manifold is linked with dispersive properties of the equation and thus with scattering phenomena. In contrast with classical analysis starting with a dynamics on a large periodic box, we propose to study NLS set on the real plane using the dispersive effects, by considering the time evolution operator in various time scales for deterministic and random initial data. By considering periodic functions embedded in the whole space by gaussian truncation, this allows explicit calculations and we identify two different regimes where the operators converges towards the kinetic operator but with different form of convergence.

Abstract

The goal of this work is to study waves interacting with partially immersed objects allowed to move freely in the vertical direction, and in a regime in which the propagation of the waves is described by the one dimensional Boussinesq-Abbott system. The problem can be reduced to a transmission problem for this Boussinesq system, in which the transmission conditions between the components of the domain at the left and at the right of the object are determined through the resolution of coupled forced ODEs in time satisfied by the vertical displacement of the object and the average discharge in the portion of the fluid located under the object. We propose a new extended formulation in which these ODEs are complemented by two other forced ODEs satisfied by the trace of the surface elevation at the contact points. The interest of this new extended formulation is that the forcing terms are easy to compute numerically and that the surface elevation at the contact points is furnished for free. Based on this formulation, we propose a second order scheme that involves a generalization of the MacCormack scheme with nonlocal flux and a source term, which is coupled to a second order Heun scheme for the ODEs. In order to validate this scheme, several explicit solutions for this wave-structure interaction problem are derived and can serve as benchmark for future codes. As a byproduct, our method provides a second order scheme for the generation of waves at the entrance of the numerical domain for the Boussinesq-Abbott system.

Abstract

Hearth-pits are some of the most common archaeological features documented in open-air Mesolithic sites, especially in coversand areas of NW Europe. However, very few geoarchaeological studies have addressed their formation, function and relationship with occupation surfaces. This work introduces new interdisciplinary investigations on the sediments of the Mesolithic open-air site of El Arenal de la Virgen (SE Iberia). A selection of five hearth-pits from two different occupation phases (Phase 1: 9.3–9.1 cal ka BP and Phase 2: 8.6–8.3 cal ka BP) has been analysed using stratigraphy, texture, soil chemistry, micromorphology, petrography and OSL and TL analyses. Combustion traits of the carbonate rock assemblages preserved in the sediments of the hearth-pits have also been investigated and compared to reference and experimental data from local geogenic materials. Our results allowed us to discuss the anthropogenic origin and taphonomy of the hearth-pits studied and approach their function. The structures from Phase 1 are interpreted as a possible oven and a dumping feature linked to single/occasional use events. In contrast, for hearth-pits from Phase 2, we propose they were related to combustion and dwelling areas subject to recurrent occupation episodes and disturbance. Finally, our sedimentary and soil data revealed existing favourable paleoenvironmental conditions during the Mesolithic occupation of the site characterized by increased moisture, temperature and vegetation cover, in contrast to the Pleistocene and Middle Holocene periods pre- and post-dating the human settlement. This work highlights the potential of integrating geoarchaeological and contextual evidence to clarify the factors involved in the formation of hearth-pits and infer intra-site occupation patterns. Abstract

International audience; In this paper, we address the problem of capturing both the shape and the pose of ahuman character using a single depth sensor. Some previous works proposed to fi taparametric generic human template into the depth image, while others developed deeplearning (DL) approaches to fi nd the correspondence between depth pixels and ver-tices of the template. We designed a hybrid approach, combining the advantages ofboth methods, and conducted extensive experiments on the SURREAL, DFAUSTdatasets and a subset of AMASS. Results show that this hybrid approach en-ables us to enhance pose and shape estimation compared to using DL or model fi ttingseparately. We also evaluated the ability of the DL-based dense correspondence methodto segment also the background - not only the body parts. We also evaluated 4 di ff er-ent methods to perform the model fi tting based on a dense correspondence, where thenumber of available 3D points di ff ers from the number of corresponding template ver-tices. These two results enabled us to better understand how to combine DL and modelfi tting, and the potential limits of this approach to deal with real depth images. Futureworks could explore the potential of taking temporal information into account, whichhas proven to increase the accuracy of pose and shape reconstruction based on a uniquedepth or RGB image.

Abstract

International audience; Trans-dimensional Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) treats the number of model parameters as an unknown, and provides a natural approach to assess models of variable complexity. We demonstrate the application of these methods to geochronology and thermochronology. The first is mixture modelling, physically a finite dimension problem, which aims to extract the number and characteristics of component age distributions from an overall distribution of radiometric age data. We demonstrate the MCMC method with Gaussian and skew-t component distributions, the latter containing the former as a special case, applied to a suit of U-Pb zircon data from a sediment in northern France. When considering the posterior distributions obtained from the MCMC samplers, the asymmetrical skew distribution models imply fewer components than the symmetrical Gaussian distribution models. We present some heuristic criteria based on different ways to look the results and aid in model choice in the mixture modelling problem. The second application is a thermal history model, physically a continuous time-temperature function but here parametrised in terms of a finite number of time temperature nodes. We consider a suite of synthetic data from a vertical profile to demonstrate the variable resolution in models constrained from single and multiple samples. Provided the implicit assumptions made when grouping multiple samples are valid, the multi-sample approach is preferable as we exploit the variable information on the model (thermal history) contained in different samples.

Abstract

International audience; This work deals with wave propagation into a coaxial cable, which can be modeled by the 3D Maxwell equations or 1D simplified models. The usual one, called the telegrapher's model, is a 1D wave equation on the electrical voltage and current. We derived a more accurate model from the Maxwell equations that takes into account dispersive effects. These two models aim to be a good approximation of the 3D electromagnetic fields in the case where the thinness of the cable is small. We perform some numerical simulations of the 3D Maxwell equations and of the 1D simplified models in order to validate the usual model and the new one. Moreover, we show that while the usual telegrapher model is of order one with respect to the thinness of the cable, the dispersive 1D model is of order two.

Abstract

We consider the moments and the distribution of hitting times on the lollipop graph which is the graph exhibiting the maximum expected hitting time among all the graphs having the same number of nodes. We obtain recurrence relations for the moments of all order and we use these relations to analyze the asymptotic behavior of the hitting time distribution when tne number of nodes tends to infinity.

Abstract

International audience; Amber and plant remains were discovered in the lower Cenomanian lignitic clay from La Gripperie-Saint-Symphorien (Charente-Maritime, western France). The amber mainly consists of scarce and infracentimetric pieces showing a wide range of sizes and colours. The shape of the amber grains greatly varies, including more or less cylindrical fragments of flows and spherical drops. Plants consist of foliar remains corresponding to isolated pinnae and pinnules of ferns (Matonia sp., Weichselia reticulata (Stokes & Webb, 1824) Fontaine emend. Alvin, 1971), leafy axes of conifers (Geinitzia reichenbachii (Geinitz, 1842) Hollick & Jeffrey, 1909, Pagiophyllum sp.) and leaves of angiosperms (including cf. Eucalyptolaurus depreii Coiffard, B.Gomez, Thiébaut & J.Kvaček and three morphotypes of undeterminable leaves). They are preserved as isolated cuticles, charcoalified compressions without cuticle, and external casts. Angiosperms are clearly the most abundant and diverse remains of the plant assemblage. This latter contrasts with most of Albian-Cenomanian coastal floras from the Aquitaine Basin, which are dominated by gymnosperms characterised by xeromorphic adaptations and tolerating halophytic conditions. Similar to the coeval sites of Puy-Puy (Charente-Maritime) and Jaunay-Clan (Vienne), the plant-rich clay from La Gripperie-Saint-Symphorien was probably deposited in innermost coastal environments heavily influenced by inland/continental freshwater.; De l’ambre et des plantes ont été découverts dans les argiles ligniteuses du Cénomanien inférieur de La Gripperie-Saint-Symphorien (Charente-Maritime, Ouest de la France). L’ambre correspond principalement à de rares pièces infracentimétriques qui montrent une large gamme de tailles et de couleurs. La forme des grains varie beaucoup, incluant des fragments de coulées plus ou moins cylindriques, ainsi que des gouttes sphériques. Les plantes correspondent à des pennes et pinnules isolées de fougères (Matonia sp., Weichselia reticulata (Stokes & Webb, 1824) Fontaine emend. Alvin, 1971), des axes feuillés de conifères (Geinitzia reichenbachii (Geinitz, 1842) Hollick & Jeffrey, 1909, Pagiophyllum sp.), ainsi que des feuilles d’angiospermes (incluant cf. Eucalyptolaurus depreii Coiffard, B.Gomez, Thiébaut & J.Kvaček et trois morphotypes de feuilles indéterminées). Ces restes sont préservés sous forme de cuticules isolées, compressions charbonneuses sans cuticule et moulages externes. Les angiospermes constituent les restes les plus abondants et les plus diversifiés de l’assemblage paléobotanique. Ceci contraste avec la plupart des flores littorales de l’Albien-Cénomanien du Bassin Aquitain, dominées par des gymnospermes montrant des adaptations xéromorphiques ainsi qu’une tolérance aux conditions halophytiques. Similairement aux sites contemporains de Puy-Puy (Charente-Maritime) et Jaunay-Clan (Vienne), les argiles à plantes de La Gripperie-Saint-Symphorien ont probablement été déposées dans des environnements côtiers plutôt internes et fortement influencés par de l’eau douce.

Abstract

The amber fossil record is distributed worldwide but mainly supported by Northern Hemisphere deposits.The Southern Hemisphere amber fossil record is relatively scarce, due to difficulties of access andprospection. The African continent recently revealed two new amber outcrops. Previously, fossiliferous andnon fossiliferous copals were known from Africa, as well as older fossilised resins lacking fossil inclusions1.The Cretaceous resin from Congo, and the Cenozoic resin from Ethiopia, are the first African ambers knownto display arthropod and botanical inclusions.When first mentioned in 20102, the Ethiopian amber was suggested Cretaceous. This dating was rapidlyquestioned by the modern lineage taxa, described from the fossilized resin3,4. Those rather display a Cenozoicassemblage. Palynological data and field observations corroborate this revision and further indicate aMiocene age of the amber. The resin originates from an angiosperm, probably Hymenaea (Fabaceae), assuggested by its chemical signal, and the associated botanical inclusions. Cryptogam and arthropod inclusions(mainly Hymenoptera and Diptera) already display a large diversity of modern taxa. All together, fossilisedspecimens illustrate a subtropical, hot and humid, swamp forest ecosystem. Similarities with the botanicaland entomofaunal composition of the contemporaneous Dominican and Mexican ambers, suggest anaffinities between African and American Miocene ecosystems.References1. Abstract

International audience; Le projet d’aménagement des Jardins de la cathédrale au Mans a entraîné la mise en place de deux diagnostics archéologiques successifs réalisés début 2015 et à l’automne 2016, en amont des travaux sur les 2 800 m² d'emprise. Cette intervention fait suite à la fouille menée en 2014 au niveau de la place du Jet d'eau sur les parcelles attenantes à l'emprise. L'ensemble des opérations prescrites par le service régional de l'archéologie et réalisées par l'Inrap sont intrinsèquement liées ; elles permettent de renouveler grandement nos connaissances de la topographie historique de la ville. Le principal axe de recherche correspond à l'axe 9 de la programmation nationale de la recherche archéologique, en effet les travaux contribuent à mieux documenter le phénomène urbain.

Abstract

Here we report on Neanderthal engravings on a cave wall at La Roche-Cotard (LRC) in central France, made more than 57±3 thousand years ago. Following human occupation, the cave was completely sealed by cold-period sediments, which prevented access until its discovery in the 19 th century and first excavation in the early 20 th century. The timing of the closure of the cave is based on 50 optically stimulated luminescence ages derived from sediment collected inside and from around the cave. The anthropogenic origin of the spatially-structured, non-figurative marks found within the cave is confirmed using taphonomic, traceological and experimental evidence. Cave closure occurred significantly before the regional arrival of H . sapiens , and all artefacts from within the cave are typical Mousterian lithics; in Western Europe these are uniquely attributed to H . neanderthalensis . We conclude that the LRC engravings are unambiguous examples of Neanderthal abstract design.

Abstract

This paper presents JAWS, an optimization-driven approach that achieves the robust transfer of visual cinematic features from a reference in-the-wild video clip to a newly generated clip. To this end, we rely on an implicit-neural-representation (INR) in a way to compute a clip that shares the same cinematic features as the reference clip. We propose a general formulation of a camera optimization problem in an INR that computes extrinsic and intrinsic camera parameters as well as timing. By leveraging the differentiability of neural representations, we can back-propagate our designed cinematic losses measured on proxy estimators through a NeRF network to the proposed cinematic parameters directly. We also introduce specific enhancements such as guidance maps to improve the overall quality and efficiency. Results display the capacity of our system to replicate well known camera sequences from movies, adapting the framing, camera parameters and timing of the generated video clip to maximize the similarity with the reference clip., CVPR 2023. Abstract

International audience; In this paper, we present a numerical strategy to check the strong stability (or GKS-stability) of one-step explicit totally upwind schemes in 1D with numerical boundary conditions. The underlying approximated continuous problem is the one-dimensional advection equation. The strong stability is studied using the Kreiss-Lopatinskii theory. We introduce a new tool, the intrinsic Kreiss-Lopatinskii determinant, which possesses remarkable regularity properties. By applying standard results of complex analysis, we are able to elate the strong stability of numerical schemes to the computation of a winding number, which is robust and cheap. The study is illustrated with the Beam-Warming scheme together with the simplified inverse Lax-Wendroff procedure at the boundary.

Abstract

International audience; 'BayLum' is an R-package that facilitates the application of Bayesian models to the field of OSL dating. Here we present two recent feature updates to 'BayLum', significantly reducing computation time and improving general use. The first feature allows users to parallelize the computations involved in the MCMC sampling of values, while the second introduces the ability to extend a 'BayLum' model, which has run to completion without converging. All updates are automatically available with 'BayLum' v0.3.1.
