Abstract

International audience; In the field of flash sintering, microwave energy represents an interesting way to densify ceramics complex shapes, thanks to a contactless volumetric heating. Attaining a fast and homogeneous heating is a critical parameter and hybrid heating, using silicon carbide susceptors, is generally used. In this study, an original multiple susceptors cascade strategy is developed, using both SiC and 3D-printed ZrO2 susceptors. This novel configuration follows perfectly the flash heating scheme, even for high heating rates up to 1000 K.min-1 and leads to a high stability of the "flash" hybrid heating. Flash microwave sintering produced dense (97% relative density) microstructures within 45 s. Based on comprehensive multiphysics simulations of the overall process, in-situ dilatometry measurements, kinetics method analysis and microstructural characterizations, this work highlights the sintering behavior of zirconia and the temperature distribution during flash microwave sintering.

Abstract

Background The aim of this study was to review, systematically, evidence concerning the link between the ACTN3 R577X polymorphism and the rates and severity of non-contact injuries and exercise-induced muscle damage in athletes and individuals enrolled in exercise training programs. Methods A computerized literature search was performed in the electronic databases PubMed, Web of Science, and SPORTDiscus, from inception until November 2020. All included studies compared the epidemiological characteristics of non-contact injury between the different genotypes of the ACTN3 R577X polymorphism. Results Our search identified 492 records. After the screening of titles, abstracts, and full texts, 13 studies examining the association between the ACTN3 genotypes and the rate and severity of non-contact injury were included in the analysis. These studies were performed in 6 different countries (Spain, Japan, Brazil, China, Republic of Korea, and Italy) and involved a total participant pool of 1093 participants. Of the studies, 2 studies involved only women, 5 studies involved only men, and 6 studies involved both men and women. All the studies included were classified as high-quality studies (≥6 points in the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) scale score). Overall, evidence suggests there is an association between the ACTN3 R577X genotype and non-contact injury in 12 investigations. Six studies observed a significant association between ACTN3 R577X polymorphism and exercise induced muscle damage: two with non-contact ankle injury, three with non-contact muscle injury, and one with overall non-contact injury. Conclusion The present findings support the premise that possessing the ACTN3 XX genotype may predispose athletes to a higher probability of some non-contact injuries, such as muscle injury, ankle sprains, and higher levels of exercise-induced muscle damage.

Abstract

International audience; A simple and effective preparation of solution-processed chalcogenide thermoelectric materials is described. First, PbTe, PbSe, and SnSe were prepared by gram-scale colloidal synthesis relying on the reaction between metal acetates and diphenyl dichalcogenides in hexadecylamine solvent. The resultant phase-pure chalcogenides consist of highly crystalline and defect- free particles with distinct cubic-, tetrapod-, and rod-like morphologies. The powdered PbTe, PbSe, and SnSe products were subjected to densification by spark plasma sintering (SPS), affording dense pellets of the respective chalcogenides. Scanning electron microscopy shows that the SPS-derived pellets exhibit fine nano-/micro-structures dictated by the original morphology of the key constituting particles, while the powder X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy analyses confirm that the SPS-derived pellets are phase-pure materials, preserving the structure of the colloidal synthesis products. The resultant solution-processed PbTe, PbSe, and SnSe exhibit low thermal conductivity, which might be due to the enhanced phonon scattering developed over fine microstructures. For undoped n-type PbTe and p-type SnSe samples, an expected moderate thermoelectric performance is achieved. In contrast, an outstanding figure-of-merit of 0.73 at 673 K was achieved for undoped n-type PbSe outperforming, the majority of the optimized PbSe-based thermoelectric materials. Overall, our findings facilitate the design of efficient solution-processed chalcogenide thermoelectrics.

Abstract

International audience; We readdress the nature and creation mechanism of the defects absorbing at 4.7 eV in Swift Heavy Ion (SHI)-irradiated AlN semiconductor. Irradiations are performed in different controlled atmospheres (vacuum, oxygen, helium or argon partial pressure) to investigate the coupled effects of (i) the synergy between electronic excitations (Se) and nuclear collisions (Sn) for point defect creation and (ii) SHI-induced impurity introduction/diffusion into the AlN layer. We found that the synergy, previously reported, between Se and Sn for defect formation must also be related to the presence of oxygen during irradiation. At the same Se, the synergy parameter is indeed increased by up to two orders of magnitude during irradiation under O2 compared to irradiation under vacuum. By SHI irradiation and by a fine-tuning of the irradiation atmosphere, we then control the activation or inhibition of these light-emitted point defects (oxygen-vacancy complexes) which can be used as qubits for applications in quantum computing.

Abstract

International audience; The use of chitosan as a support in the field of catalysis has gained tremendous interest because of its abundance and sustainability. We herein disclose a straightforward strategy to trap and stabilize bismuth nanoparticles (BiNPs) on chitosan biopolymer Bi@CS and their use for catalytic applications. Bi@CS was configured as micrometer-thick films, porous beads, and native powders analyzed and next used for the controlled and selective reduction of nitroaromatic compounds to their corresponding anilines and azoarenes, respectively, by varying the concentration medium in reducing NaBH 4. A regioselective mechanism has been suggested. Powder nanocomposites CSp-BiNPs exhibited high catalytic capacity, and 10 corresponding anilines and 15 azoarenes were obtained with very high yields. The reductions were achieved under mild and sustainable reaction conditions (water solvent and room temperature) with easy processing and 12 recovery cycles. Shaped catalysts were easily recovered by simple filtration. This catalyst, derived from nontoxic and affordable bismuth metal supported on chitosan ocean waste, presents significant improvements in the realm of sustainable chemistry and could open a new channel of possibilities for green catalysis.

Abstract

By collecting simultaneously optical and chemical/morphological data from nanoscale volumes, the Photonic Atom Probe (PAP) can be applied not only to the study of the relationship between optical and structural properties of quantum emitter but also to evaluate the influence of other factors, such as the presence of point defects, on the photoluminescence. Through the analysis of multiple layers of InGaN/GaN quantum dots (QDs), grown so that the density of structural defects is higher with increasing distance from the substrate, we establish that the light emission is higher in the regions exhibiting a higher presence of structural defects. While the presence of intrinsic point defects with non-radiative recombination properties remains elusive, our result is consistent with the fact that QD layers closer to the substrate behave as traps for non-radiative point defects. This result demonstrates the potential of the PAP as a technique for the study of the optical properties of defects in semiconductors.

International audience; Although the metal-based catalyzed cyanomethylation of aldehydes is well-developed, a similar approach to ketones with acetonitrile derivatives remains a challenge. Thanks to Tolman type complexes, NiIIcomplexes with a pyridine(dicarboxamide) pincer ligand, analternative metal-catalyzed (1-5 mol% catalyst) cyanomethylation of an array of isatins and activated ketones is reported at room temperature. High isolated yields (up to 99%) were obtained not only with the poorly acidic acetonitrile but also with more challenging substituted alkyl cyanide nucleophiles. The in situ generated putative ion paired catalysts [NiCR2CN]-Cat+ likely benefit from the cation part (Cs+ or n-Bu4N+) to facilitate their formation and catalytic activity

Abstract

International audience; Developing alternatives to platinum (Pt) and iridium (Ir) in proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers is crucial on the way to viable energy provision schemes. However, although it seems difficult to substitute Ir, alternatives exist for Pt at the PEMWE cathode. Here, we report on the synthesis and the characterization of efficient and durable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) nanocatalysts based on MoS2 supported on high surface area carbon. Citric acid was used as a chelating agent to control the size of the crystallites (1.4 nm) and thus the density of active sites (slab edges). Inspired by successful approaches in catalysis for hydrodesulfurization reactions, conventional 2H MoS2 was sequentially doped with cobalt (Co) then 1 wt. % of Pt. Overpotentials of 188 mV, 140 and 118 mV at 10 mA cm-2 are reported for MoS2/C, Co-MoS2/C and Pt1%-CoMoS2/C, respectively. This result is attributed to the weakening of Hads binding energy of the promoted MoS2 edge active sites (because the promoting atoms are mostly located at the edges). Associated with small metal dissolution rates (monitored in situ, during HER), our findingsdemonstrate that metal promotion (doping) is a promising route to replace platinum by earth-abundant elements in acidic water electrolyzers.

Abstract

Unconstrained handwritten text recognition remains challenging for computer vision systems. Paragraph text recognition is traditionally achieved by two models: the first one for line segmentation and the second one for text line recognition. We propose a unified end-to-end model using hybrid attention to tackle this task. This model is designed to iteratively process a paragraph image line by line. It can be split into three modules. An encoder generates feature maps from the whole paragraph image. Then, an attention module recurrently generates a vertical weighted mask enabling to focus on the current text line features. This way, it performs a kind of implicit line segmentation. For each text line features, a decoder module recognizes the character sequence associated, leading to the recognition of a whole paragraph. We achieve state-of-the-art character error rate at paragraph level on three popular datasets: 1.91% for RIMES, 4.45% for IAM and 3.59% for READ 2016. International audience; The recent paper by Deng et al. showed that a copper sulphide with Cu7Sn3S10 composition is a promising thermoelectric material reaching a figure of merit ZT of 0.8 at 750 K via Cl doping. However, structural reinvestigations of the Cu7Sn3S10 sample (i.e., Cu2.10Sn0.90S3) prepared in the reported conditions show that the phase of interest is not tetragonal (space group I (4) over bar 2m, a(t) = 5.4164 angstrom, c(t) = 10.832 angstrom), but crystallizes in the cubic symmetry (space group P (4) over bar 3n, a(c) = 10.832 angstrom) with a composition close to Cu22Sn10S32 similar to the results published by Pavan Kumar et al. These observations indicate that the main phase around the composition Cu7Sn3S10 is cubic, and a revision needs to be imposed for the understanding of the relationships between the structure and thermoelectric properties in this family.

Abstract

International audience; BACKGROUND: Use of a combination of targeted therapies (COMBIO) in patients with refractory/overlapping immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) has increased, but reported data remain scarce. We aimed to assess effectiveness and safety of COMBIO in patients with IMIDs. METHODS: We conducted a French ambispective multicenter cohort study from September 2020 to May 2021, including adults' patients with 1 or 2 IMIDs and treated at least 3-month with COMBIO. RESULTS: Overall, 143 patients were included. The most common IMIDs were Crohn's disease (63.6%), axial spondyloarthritis (37.7%), and ulcerative colitis (14%). Half of patients had only one IMID, of which 60% were Crohn's disease. Mean duration of COMBIO was 274.5±59.3 weeks, and COMBIO persistence at 104 weeks was estimated at 64.1%. The most frequent COMBIOs combined anti-TNF agents with vedolizumab (30%) or ustekinumab (28.7%). Overall, 50% of patients achieved significant and 27% mild-to-moderate improvement in patient-reported outcomes. Extended duration of COMBIO (aOR=1.09; 95% CI: 1.03-1.14; p=0.002) and diagnoses of two IMIDs (aOR=3.46; 95%CI: 1.29-9.26; p=0.013) were associated with significant improvement in patient-reported outcomes. Incidence of serious infection during COMBIO was 4.51 per 100 person-years (95% CI 2.20-8.27) and 5 COMBIOs were discontinued due to adverse events. CONCLUSIONS: COMBIO can be effective and safe in patients with refractory/overlapping IMIDs.

Abstract

International audience; A chiral 3D coordination compound, [Gd2(L)2(ox)2(H2O)2], arranged around a dinuclear Gd unit has been characterized by X-ray photoemission and X-ray absorption measurements in the context of density functional theory studies. Core level photoemission of the Gd 5p multiplet splittings indicates that spin orbit coupling dominates over j–J coupling evident in the 5p core level spectra of Gd metal. Indications of spin–orbit coupling are consistent with the absence of inversion symmetry due to the ligand field. Density functional theory predicts antiferromagnet alignment of the Gd2 dimers and a band gap of the compound consistent with optical absorption.

Abstract

International audience; Codoped (Tb,Eu) ZnO films grown by magnetron sputtering on a silicon substrate and annealed up to 1200 °C showed intense photoluminescence (PL) emission from Eu3+ ions. The high-temperature annealing led to diffusion and segregation of rare earth (RE) elements toward the bottom of the film, which induced the formation of nanometric Zn-free inclusions responsible for remarkable PL emission intensity. Combined electron diffraction, chemical contrast imaging, and optical studies of these nanometric phases have been carried out. Large inclusions of zinc silicates and RE silicates a few hundreds of nanometers in size were observed, embedded in a silica phase. The structural determination of these RE-rich inclusions was carried out by combining atomic Z contrast imaging (high-angle annular dark-field imaging) and precession electron diffraction data. Upon annealing at 1200 °C, it appeared that the structure was related to an F-type disilicate structure. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy experiments were carried out to determine the ratios between elements and the oxidation states of the RE elements in the abovementioned inclusions. A (Tb,Eu)2Si2O7 formulation is proposed from dynamical precession electron diffraction tomography refinements, leading to a +III valence state for the RE species in agreement with spectroscopic results. PL modeling is also in good agreement with the experimental data. These results complete those obtained at 1100 °C for which the inclusions were identified as some RE10–x(SiO4)6O2–x oxyapatite structures and pointed out a combined structural and PL properties’ evolution between 1100 and 1200 °C annealing temperatures.

Abstract

Although studies used machine learning algorithms to predict performances in sports activities, none, to the best of our knowledge, have used and validated two artificial intelligence techniques: artificial neural network (ANN) and k-nearest neighbor (KNN) in the running discipline of marathon and compared the accuracy or precision of the predicted performances. Official French rankings for the 10-km road and marathon events in 2019 were scrutinized over a dataset of 820 athletes (aged 21, having run 10 km and a marathon in the same year that was run slower, etc.). For the KNN and ANN the same inputs (10-km race time, body mass index, age and sex) were used to solve a linear regression problem to estimate the marathon race time. No difference was found between the actual and predicted marathon performances for either method (p>0,05). Abstract

Background and Aims Paediatric-onset IBD [pIBD] is associated with an increased risk of cancer and mortality in adulthood. The aims of this study were to measure the incidence of cancer and mortality in patients with pIBD and identify factors associated with mortality and cancer. Methods All patients diagnosed with Crohn’s disease [CD] or ulcerative colitis [UC] before the age of 17 years between 1988 and 2011 in the EPIMAD registry were retrospectively followed until 2013 for cancer and 2015 for mortality. Standardized incidence [SIR] and mortality ratios [SMR] were estimated compared to the general population. Cox regression was used to compare the effect of exposures on cancer and mortality among IBD patients. Results We included 1344 patients [52% males, 75% CD], totalling 12 957 patient-years for cancer incidence and 18 817 patient-years for mortality. There were 14 cases of cancer [median age 27.8 years] and 15 deaths [median age 28.8 years]. The incidence of cancer and of mortality were increased compared to the general population: all-cancer SIR = 2.7 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.5–4.8), SMR = 1.7 [95% CI: 1.0–2.8]. Colorectal cancer had the highest SIR and SMR: SIR = 41.2 [95% CI: 17.2–99.0], SMR = 70.4 [95% CI 22.7–218.2]. Cancer was associated with (hazard ratio [HR], 95% CI): active smoking at diagnosis [5.5, 1.8–16.5], p = 0.002; any exposure to anti-tumour necrosis factor [6.1, 1.7–22.3], p = 0.0065; and exposure to combination therapy [7.4, 1.8–29.7], p = 0.0047. Mortality was associated with extraintestinal manifestations (HR 4.9 [95% CI: 1.7–13.8], p = 0.003). Conclusions In this large population-based cohort, patients with pIBD had an increased risk of both cancer [2.7-fold] and mortality [1.7-fold], particularly for colorectal cancer.

Abstract

International audience; There is a growing interest in on-site, real-time analytical solutions for mining and environmental projects to characterize large areas and/or volumes of raw materials that are sometimes highly heterogeneous in terms of elemental distribution and mineralogy. Several fast and cost-effective methods are used for rapid on-site screening and real-time chemical and mineralogical characterization, such as portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) and X-ray diffraction (pXRD). However, these methods are not always applicable due to limitations in the detection and quantification of light elements (Mg, Al, Si) for pXRF or complex or minor minerals for pXRD, whose results need to be supported by laboratory analysis.This study presents a new methodological approach for in situ rapid chemical and mineralogical characterization of samples, based on the use of a transportable instrument (called ID2B) that allows, in a single acquisition step, a combined XRD-XRF analysis to identify and quantify the chemical elements and their associated minerals. The HI0 harzburgite sample from New Caledonia used to evaluate the data was analyzed in the laboratory (SEM-EDS, EPMA, XRF and XRD) and with the ID2B instrument to highlight the potential of our new methodology. In order to demonstrate the interest of using the ID2B combined XRF-XRD analysis approach directly in the field, where sample preparation is not always easy to implement, this comparison was made on the same sample (HI0), prepared in two different ways, either as a powderized (optimal preparation) or as-sawn (unprepared) sample. After automated processing of the combined XRF-XRD datasets acquired with the ID2B instrument, the chemical elements and mineralogical phases identified on both the powder and as-sawn samples are identical to the laboratory analyses.The chemical proportions calculated from the combined XRF-XRD data sets are also close to the laboratory XRF analysis with relative errors

Abstract

International audience; The study was conducted in the southern part of the lower Strymon valley, in northern Greece, and revealed up to 25 m of fluvio-lacustrine sediments deposited over the last seven millennia. This sedimentary record represents a significant opportunity for high-resolution palaeoenvironmental studies of the period from 6 to 3 ka cal BP linked to land use and climate change. The results of geophysical investigations, multi-proxy sedimentological (grain size, magnetic susceptibility, loss-on-ignition), pollen and NPP analyses, based on high-precision radiocarbon dating enabled reconstruction of past landscapes as well as a comprehensive discussion of anthropogenic responses and their impact on the vegetation cover, especially during periods with well-known Holocene Rapid Climate Change events (5.6, 4.2 and 3.2 ka cal BP). During the 7-5.7 ka cal BP corresponding to the Late and Final Neolithic, wet conditions created an extended lake surrounded by the densely wooded Strymon watershed, followed by a shift to a shallower lake environment that lasted until ca. 4.5 ka cal BP. The continuous presence of anthropogenic taxa suggests the persistence of human activities even in the absence of formally recognized sites, suggesting the relocation of settlements. The first signs of human disturbance of the landscape at regional scale occurred toward 5.2 ka cal BP (onset of the Early Bronze Age). The so-called « 4.2 ka BP event », which coincided with the end of the Early Bronze Age and the transition to the Middle Bronze Age, is divided into three distinct periods (4.35-4.1, 4.1-3.95 and 3.95-3.75 ka cal BP). The first corresponds to gradual aridification before a period with severe dry conditions that marks a tipping point toward wetland contraction. From this period on, diversification, and multiplication of anthropogenic species including Olea, Juglans and Castanea reflect a global trend toward cultural landscapes. The later periods are characterized by dramatic climatic change around 3.2-3 ka cal BP, at the end of Late Bronze Age, and increasing impacts of agro-pastoral activities and forest clearing starting at the beginning of Antiquity, around 2.8 ka cal BP (Thracian period). After the 4.2 ka cal BP event and we suggest that climatic adversity may have acted as a stimulus to innovation and relocation rather than retarding societal development in the region. To conclude, environmental factors in the lower Strymon valley were not sufficient on their own to trigger a social crisis similar to that mentioned in the Middle East.

Abstract

International audience; The surface modification of metal oxides by grafting an organic molecule allows the development of new specific properties on demand. In this work, we demonstrate the modification of the Yttria Tetragonal Zirconia Polycrystal (Y-TZP), which is a ceramic widely used in dental implantology, by polymer grafting of the surface in a three-steps protocol for tuning the wetting properties. The first step involved the preparation of zirconia pellet by sintering followed by their surface activation. In the second step, the organic initiator bearing a tertiary amine such as the N,N-dimethylamino group capable of initiating a radical photopolymerization reaction, was grafted onto the surface through a bisphosphonic acid functionality. In the last step, two monomers, namely methyl methacrylate and styrene, were photopolymerized on the zirconia surface by blue light irradiation.The chemical steps were monitored and characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). Wetting properties to different polar and nonpolar liquids and surface energies calculated with the Van Oss theory were found to vary systematically depending on the type of functionalization and grafting. This methodology is very promising for surface tuning of the dental ceramic.

Abstract

International audience; This paper proposes a novel continuous-discrete (sampled data) time neural network (NSNN) observer for nonlinear systems. It can therefore be applied to systems with a high degree of non-linearity with no prior knowledge of the system dynamics. The proposed observer is a three-layer feedforward neural network that has been intensively trained using the error backpropagation learning algorithm, which includes an e-modification term to ensure robustness of the observer. A structure of the output predictor with a corrective term is added in the structure of the NN observer to overcome the problem of discrete time measurement. Simulations using MATLAB and CarSim are illustrated to demonstrate the performance of the proposed state observer strategy to reconstruct the state variables and parameters of a vehicle system.

Abstract

International audience; The effects of a job change on organizational commitment are still very few taken into account in research. When they are, the reality of the previous professional experience is unfairly equated with the employee’s memory of it. After mobilizing neuropsychological knowledge about the functioning of human memory, two independent studies are carried out to question the link between retrospective organizational commitment at the former employer and current commitment. The first study, quantitative, is variable centered. It reveals that this link is significant and that it is moderated neither by the factual differences between the two jobs nor by the conditions of termination of the previous employment contract. The second, more qualitative because person centered, reveals that these HRM decisions are associated with differences in assignment in the commitment profiles. First of all, these results invite us to take into account a new concept: retrospective commitment. By authorizing the integration into the reasoning of a process of comparisons of situational characteristics, it enriches the explanation of commitment in the context of a disrupted career. These theoretical contributions make it possible to identify the managerial strategies to adopt to promote positive contrasts of commitment.; Les effets d’un changement d’emploi sur l’implication organisationnelle sont encore peu pris en compte dans les recherches. Quand ils le sont, la réalité de la précédente expérience professionnelle est injustement assimilée au souvenir qu’en garde le salarié. Après avoir mobilisé les connaissances neuropsychologiques au sujet du fonctionnement de la mémoire humaine, deux études indépendantes sont réalisées pour questionner le lien unissant l’implication organisationnelle rétrospective chez l’ancien employeur à l’implication actuelle. La première étude, quantitative, est centrée sur les variables. Elle révèle que ce lien est significatif et qu’il n’est modéré ni par les différences factuelles entre les deux emplois ni par les conditions de rupture du précédent contrat de travail. La seconde, plus qualitative car centrée sur les personnes, révèle que ces décisions de GRH sont associées à des différences d’affectation dans les profils d’implication. Ces résultats invitent tout d’abord à prendre en compte un nouveau concept, celui d’implication rétrospective. En autorisant l’intégration dans le raisonnement d’un processus de comparaison des caractéristiques situationnelles, il enrichit l’explication de l’implication en contexte de carrière heurtée. Ces apports théoriques permettent de cerner les stratégies managériales à adopter pour favoriser les contrastes positives d’implications.

Abstract

We have investigated the interface dislocations in InxGa1−xN/GaN heterostructures (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.20) using diffraction contrast analysis in a transmission electron microscope. The results indicate that the structural properties of interface dislocations depend on the indium composition. For lower indium composition (up to x = 0.09), we observed that the screw-type dislocations and dislocation half-loops occurred at the interface, even though the former do not contribute toward elastic relaxation of the misfit strain in the InGaN layer. With the increase in indium composition (0.13 ≤ x ≤ 0.17), in addition to the network of screw-type dislocations, edge-type misfit dislocations were generated, with their density gradually increasing. For higher indium composition (0.18 ≤ x ≤ 0.20), all of the interface dislocations are transformed into a network of straight misfit dislocations along the direction, leading to partial relaxation of the InGaN epilayer. The presence of dislocation half-loops may be explained by a slip on basal plane; formation of edge-type misfit dislocations are attributed to punch-out mechanism.

Abstract

The coordinating role of nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) in cellular function is undeniable. Evidence indicates that this transcription factor exerts massive regulatory functions in multiple signaling pathways concerning redox homeostasis and xenobiotics, macromolecules, and iron metabolism. Being the master regulator of antioxidant system, Nrf2 controls cellular fate, influencing cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, resistance to therapy, and senescence processes, as well as infection disease success. Because Nrf2 is the key coordinator of cell defence mechanisms, dysregulation of its signaling has been associated with carcinogenic phenomena and infectious and age-related diseases. Deregulation of this cytoprotective system may also interfere with immune response. Oxidative burst, one of the main microbicidal mechanisms, could be impaired during the initial phagocytosis of pathogens, which could lead to the successful establishment of infection and promote susceptibility to infectious diseases. There is still a knowledge gap to fill regarding the molecular mechanisms by which Nrf2 orchestrates such complex networks involving multiple pathways. This review describes the role of Nrf2 in non-pathogenic and pathogenic cells.

Abstract

International audience; Formic acid is considered as one of the most promising liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC). Its catalytic dehydrogenation processes generally suffer from low activity, low reaction selectivity, low stability of the catalysts and/or the use of noble-metal based catalysts. Herein, we report a highly selective, efficient, and noble metal-free photocatalyst for the dehydrogenation of formic acid. This catalyst is built from a post-metalation of a carboxylic-functionalized Zr-MOF by copper, namely UiO-66(COOH)2-Cu. The visible light driven photocatalytic dehydrogenation process through the release of hydrogen and carbon dioxide is monitored in real-time via operando FTIR and reveals almost 100% of selectivity with high stability (over 3 days) and conversion yield exceeding 60% (around 5 mmol.g-1 cat.h-1) at ambient conditions. These performance indicators make UiO-66(COOH)2-Cu among the top photocatalysts for formic acid dehydrogenation. Interestingly, the as-prepared UiO-66(COOH)2-Cu hetero-nanostructure was found moderately active under solar irradiation during an induction phase, whereupon it undergoes an in-situ restructuring process through intra-framework cross-linking with the formation of the anhydride analogue structure, UiO-66(COO)2-Cu, and nano-clustering of highly active and stable copper sites as evidenced by the operando studies coupled with steady state isotopic transient kinetic (SSITKA) experiment, TEM, XPS analysis and DFT calculations. Beyond revealing outstanding catalytic performance for UiO-66(COO)2-Cu, this work delivers an in-depth understanding of the photocatalytic reaction mechanism implying an evolutive behavior of the post-metalated copper as well as the MOF framework over the reaction. These key findings pave the ways towards the engineering of new simple and efficient catalysts for photocatalytic dehydrogenation of formic acid.

Abstract

This article demonstrates the value of atomic force microscopes, particularly the different electrical modes, for characterizing complex microelectronic structures. It presents experimental results obtained from deep trench isolation (DTI) structures using SCM and SSRM analysis with emphasis on the voltage applied by the AFM. From these measurements, a failure analysis workflow is proposed that facilitates AFM voltage optimization to reveal the structure of cross-sectioned samples, make comparisons, and determine the underlying cause of failures.

Abstract

International audience; The first demonstration of a nanoscaled titanium zirconium nitride (TiZrN2) single-phase isolated during the preparation of polymer-derived silicon nitride (Si3N4) matrix nanocomposites is discussed. We employed a polysilazane, which was chemically modified with Zr[N(CH2CH3)2]4 and Ti[N(CH3)2]4 then ammonolyzed before a pyrolysis step under ammonia (1000 °C) and a heat-treatment in flowing nitrogen (1000–1700 °C). Based on a careful control of the precursor chemistry in the early stage of the process and nano-/microstructural investigations of the material performed during its preparation, we were able to identify TiZrN2 nanocrystals with a size as low as 9 nm distributed in α- and β-Si3N4 phases at a temperature as low as 1500 °C. We particularly proved that the TiZrN2 nanophase could be generated because of the use of the polysilazane evoluting towards a covalently-bonded Si3N4 matrix . This unique nanostructure is expected to provide particular functionality to Si3N4 as noble metal-free catalysts and components with high plasmonic quality.

Abstract

Using localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) as an optical probe we demonstrate the presence of free carriers in phosphorus doped silicon nanocrystals (SiNCs) embedded in a silica matrix. In small SiNCs, with radius ranging from 2.6 to 5.5 nm, the infrared spectroscopy study coupled to numerical simulations allows us to determine the number of electrically active phosphorus atoms with a precision of a few atoms. We demonstrate that LSP resonances can be supported with only about 10 free electrons per nanocrystal, confirming theoretical predictions and probing the limit of the collective nature of plasmons. We reveal the appearance of an avoided crossing behavior linked to the hybridization between the localized surface plasmon in the doped nanocrystals and the silica matrix phonon modes. Finally, a careful analysis of the scattering time dependence versus carrier density in the small size regime allows us to detect the appearance of a new scattering process at high dopant concentration, which can be explained by P clustering inside the SiNCs.

Abstract

International audience; Endometriosis is a painful gynecological disorder that affects many women. Constant treatments and contraception changes affect women looking for solutions to treat and limit the problems caused by endometriosis. The current narrative review discusses the effects of physical activity on the management, pain, and quality of life in patients with endometriosis. Findings suggest that body awareness practices such as Hatha yoga, the Jacobson method, and progressive muscle relaxation reduce pain and stress and improve the quality of life associated with endometriosis. It also highlights the current knowledge gap on available evidence and future research. Moreover, care must be taken when considering patients’ physical abilities and goals and avoiding intense physical activities. The forms of endometriosis and its symptoms vary from one woman to another, so it is important to perform studies with various nonmedicinal or surgical techniques. It is important to continue randomized controlled trials to obtain more data on the benefits of physical activity in women with endometriosis and also to identify what types of activities could be beneficial to combat pain symptoms and improve the daily lives of women with endometriosis.

Abstract

En décidant de débattre sur le thème « L’innovation médicale et hospitalière, hier, aujourd’hui, demain », qui avait pour sous-titre : « Technologies, chercheurs et patients », les organisateurs des Journées internationales de Lille à l’origine de cet ouvrage ont clairement manifesté leur intention de travailler non seulement sur les nouvelles technologies, les découvertes et les savants qui les ont portées, mais aussi sur leurs applications et l’évolution des conditions de la prise en charge du malade.Les contributions rassemblées évoquent les différents dispositifs mis en œuvre pour faire face aux grandes pandémies à travers l’histoire jusqu’ à la Covid 19, et mettent l’accent sur le rôle évolutif de l’hôpital, sur la manière dont les patients hospitalisés ont pu bénéficier de soins en fonction du caractère plus ou moins innovant des structures hospitalières en France et aussi dans l’Italie fasciste. La médicalisation des établissements, une notion qui doit certes être relativisée et explicitée suivant les époques, est abordée en liaison avec le développement de la recherche médicale et le rôle joué par différents organismes comme les instituts Pasteur, en France et au Maghreb, et d’autres centres de recherche. Les limites ou les alternatives à l’hospitalisation, comme les dispensaires antituberculeux, voire les résistances à la prise en charge médicale, notamment à la vaccination dans les espaces des anciennes colonies ou sous influence (Tunisie, Polynésie française), sont également abordées.

Abstract

Atom probe tomography (APT) is a powerful three-dimensional nanoanalyzing microscopy technique considered key in modern materials science. However, progress in the spatial reconstruction of APT data has been rather limited since the first implementation of the protocol proposed by Bas et al. in 1995. This paper proposes a simple semianalytical approach to reconstruct multilayered structures, i.e., two or more different compounds stacked perpendicular to the analysis direction. Using a field evaporation model, the general dynamic evolution of parameters involved in the reconstruction of this type of structure is estimated. Some experimental reconstructions of different structures through the implementation of this method that dynamically accommodates variations in the tomographic reconstruction parameters are presented. It is shown both experimentally and theoretically that the depth accuracy of reconstructed APT images is improved using this method. The method requires few parameters in order to be easily usable and substantially improves atom probe tomographic reconstructions of multilayered structures.

Abstract

International audience; Mass mortality events affecting the blue mussels Mytilus edulis have been observed in France since 2014. The DNA of the bacterium Francisella halioticida, reported as pathogen of giant abalone (Haliotis gigantea) and Yesso scallop (Mizuhopecten yessoensis) has been detected recently in mussels from areas suffering mortalities. Isolation of this bacterium was attempted from individuals collected during mortality events. Identification was performed by16S rRNA gene sequencing, real-time specific PCR and MALDI-ToF using spectra produced from the strain 8472-13A isolated from diseased Yesso scallop in Canada. Five isolates were identified as F. halioticida by real-time specific PCR and 16S rRNA sequencing. MALDI-ToF allowed the direct identification of four isolates(FR22a,b,c,d) which had 100% identity on the 16S rRNA gene with the known strains. On the other hand, one isolate (FR21) was not recognized by MALDI-ToF and had 99.9% identity on the 16S rRNA gene. The FR22 isolates showed difficult growth and required media optimization, which was not the case with the FR21 isolate. For these reasons, it was hypothesized that two type strains are present on French coasts, named FR21 and FR22. The FR21 isolate was selected for phenotypic analysis (growth curve, biochemical characteristics, electron microscopy), phylogenetic analysis and an experimental challenge.This isolate showed distinct differences compared to published F. halioticida strains, both at phenotypic and genotypic levels. Experimental infections of adult mussels led to 36% mortalities in 23 days following intramuscular injection with 3 x 107 CFU while a lower dose (3 x 103 CFU) did not lead to significant mortalities. In the context of this study, the strain FR21 was not virulent towards adult mussels.

Abstract

Background: While intravesical injections of botulinum neurotoxin A (BoNT-A) are currently recommended for patients experiencing refractory neurogenic overactive bladder and/or detrusor overactivity (OAB/DO), it is unclear how much this therapy is effective and sustainable in the long-term in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Objectives: To assess the mid-term continuation rate of BoNT-A injections to treat neurogenic OAB/DO in MS patients and to investigate MS-specific risk factors for discontinuation. Methods: This retrospective study involved 11 French university hospital centers. All MS patients who received BoNT-A to treat neurogenic OAB/DO between 2008 and 2013 and were subsequently followed up for at least 5 years were eligible. Results: Of the 196 MS patients included, 159 (81.1%) were still under BoNT-A 5 years after the first injection. The combination of the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS < 6 or ⩾ 6) and of the MS type (relapsing–remitting vs progressive) predicted the risk of discontinuation. This risk was 5.5% for patients with no risk factor, whereas patients presenting with one or two risk factors were 3.3 and 5.7 times more likely to discontinue, respectively. Conclusion: BoNT-A is a satisfying mid-term neurogenic OAB/DO therapy for most MS patients. Combining EDSS and MS type could help predict BoNT-A discontinuation.

Abstract

International audience; Background The identification of patients at high risk of a disabling disease course would be invaluable in guiding initial therapy in Crohn’s disease (CD). Our objective was to evaluate a combination of clinical, serological, and genetic factors to predict complicated disease course in pediatric-onset CD. Methods Data for pediatric-onset CD patients, diagnosed before 17 years of age between 1988 and 2004 and followed more than 5 years, were extracted from the population-based EPIMAD registry. The main outcome was defined by the occurrence of complicated behavior (stricturing or penetrating) and/or intestinal resection within the 5 years following diagnosis. Lasso logistic regression models were used to build a predictive model based on clinical data at diagnosis, serological data (ASCA, pANCA, anti-OmpC, anti-Cbir1, anti-Fla2, anti-Flax), and 369 candidate single nucleotide polymorphisms. Results In total, 156 children with an inflammatory (B1) disease at diagnosis were included. Among them, 35% (n = 54) progressed to a complicated behavior or an intestinal resection within the 5 years following diagnosis. The best predictive model (PREDICT-EPIMAD) included the location at diagnosis, pANCA, and 6 single nucleotide polymorphisms. This model showed good discrimination and good calibration, with an area under the curve of 0.80 after correction for optimism bias (sensitivity, 79%, specificity, 74%, positive predictive value, 61%, negative predictive value, 87%). Decision curve analysis confirmed the clinical utility of the model. Conclusions A combination of clinical, serotypic, and genotypic variables can predict disease progression in this population-based pediatric-onset CD cohort. Independent validation is needed before it can be used in clinical practice.

Abstract

International audience; Among the various alternatives to fossil energies, microalga-based fuels are promising solutions. Thanks to their ability to grow under harsh conditions and trap industrial exhaust gases, these microalgae can help reduce global warming effects. One efficient way to process this feedstock is to use hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) which leads to an intermediate bio-crude and a residual solid. This bio-crude can be further refined to produce usable biofuel by eliminating problematic heteroatoms such as nitrogen, oxygen, and metals. The residual solid, which can represent 50 % in mass is, however not useable nowadays. To valorize this insoluble fraction, the present work is focused on its molecular characterization and, in particular, on its metal content. Metals are particularly problematic for downstream processes when they are in an organic form such as porphyrins as they destroy catalysts. Identification and speciation of these metal organic species is thus needed. However, these analyses are challenging because of the high molecular diversity of these samples. Here, complementarity between electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR) and FTICR-MS, which is a state-of-the-art mass spectrometer, was used for the speciation of copper elements in the residual solid. A signal characteristic of a copper surrounded by four symmetric nitrogen atoms was observed in EPR, suggesting porphyrinic structures. The dynamic range of FTICR-MS broadband analyses was not sufficient to access the isotopic fine structure of the copper porphyrins. Continuous accumulation of selected ions analyses (CASI) was thus, performed to boost the dynamic range of the mass spectrometer in a narrower mass range allowed to confirm for the first time the presence of copper porphyrins in a residual solid of bio-crude. Different families of copper porphyrins were observed, and putative structures were proposed.

Abstract

International audience; In the Combinatorial Substrate Epitaxy (CSE) approach, a thin film is grown at high temperature on a polycrystalline substrate. Those substrates induce a local film epitaxy on each substrate grain and an overall polycrystalline character on the macroscopic scale. Compared to single-crystalline films, this approach provides the possibility to introduce, in a controlled way, grain boundaries providing new functionalities. Therefore, controlling the microstructure and grain size of the substrates is an important step for tuning the film properties. In this paper, a complete study of the granular growth of the standard substrate material for the deposition of perovskite thin films, SrTiO3, has been carried out with different isothermal cycles highlighting the grain growth mechanisms. From these results, we are able to predict the sintering thermal cycle necessary for targeting very precisely a desired grain size and the corresponding physical properties. Indeed, highly restraint physical properties specifications are needed for advanced electronic applications. Since a classic granular growth model was used, this approach can be generalized to the broad family of oxides.

Abstract

International audience; The possibility of anodic oxidation of SiC surfaces by a strong, local electric field applied during Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) under ambient conditions is an interesting method to achieve nanopatterning of SiC, but is also a side-effect to be well characterized and controlled during this kind of AFM measurements if used to determine the local electric properties. In this contribution, we will analyze the local electric fields by finite element simulations in order to quantify the effect of the presence of a water meniscus and of an oxide layer on the SiC surface. Furthermore, we will experimentally highlight the strong influence of the local doping on the anodization, leading to the formation of thicker oxide layers at the location of highly doped SiC. Therefore, the location of these areas can be determined by a simple AFM topography scan after the application of a high field, allowing to detect highly doped SiC areas in complex structures as for example SiC MOSFETs.

However, their natural history remains poorly known, especially in pediatric-onset CD.Methods: All patients with a diagnosis of CD before the age of 17 years between 1988 and 2011 within the population-based registry EPIMAD were followed retrospectively until 2013. At diagnosis and during follow-up, the clinical and therapeutic features of perianal disease were recorded. An adjusted time-dependent Cox model was used to evaluate the risk of evolution of anal ulcerations towards suppurative lesions.Results: Among the 1,005 included patients (females, 450 (44.8%); median age at diagnosis 14.4 years (IQR, 12.0-16.1)), 257 (25.6%) had an anal ulceration at diagnosis. Cumulative incidence of anal ulceration at 5 and 10 years from diagnosis was 38.4% (CI95%, 35.2-41.4) and 44.0% (CI95%, 40.5-47.2), respectively. Abstract

International audience; Three-dimensional (3D) real-time object detection and tracking is an important task in the case of autonomous vehicles and road and railway smart mobility in order to allow them to analyze their environment for navigation and obstacle avoidance purposes. In this paper, we try to improve the efficiency of 3D monocular object detection by using dataset combination, knowledge distillation, and creating a lightweight model. Firstly, we combine real and synthetic datasets to increase the diversity and richness of the training data. Then, we use knowledge distillation to transfer the knowledge from a large, pre-trained model to a smaller, lightweight model. Finally, we created a lightweight model by selecting the combinations of width, depth and resolution in order to reach a target complexity and computation time. Our experiments show that using each method improves either the accuracy or the efficiency of our model with no significant drawbacks. Using all these approaches is especially useful for resource-constrained environments, such as self-driving cars and railway systems.; La détection et le suivi d'objets tridimensionnels (3D) temps-réel est une tâche importante dans le cas des véhicules autonomes et de la mobilité intelligente routière et ferroviaire, afin de leur permettre d'analyser leur environnement à des fins de navigation et d'évitement d'obstacles. Dans cet article, nous essayons d'améliorer l'efficacité de la détection d'objets 3D monoculaire en utilisant la combinaison de jeux de données, la distillation de connaissances et la création d'un modèle léger. Tout d'abord, nous combinons des ensembles de données réelles et synthétiques pour augmenter la diversité et la richesse des données d'entraînement. Ensuite, nous utilisons la distillation des connaissances pour transférer les connaissances d'un grand modèle pré-entraîné vers un modèle plus petit et léger. Enfin, nous avons créé un modèle léger en sélectionnant les combinaisons de largeur, de profondeur et de résolution afin d'atteindre une complexité et un temps de calcul cibles. Nos expériences montrent que l'utilisation de chaque méthode améliore soit la précision, soit l'efficacité de notre modèle, sans inconvénient majeur. L'utilisation de toutes ces approches est particulièrement utile pour les environnements à ressources limitées, tels que les voitures à conduite autonome et les systèmes ferroviaires.

International audience; Les examens paléopathologiques de sujets immatures se confrontent au caractère peu spécifique des modifications osseuses observables macroscopiquement. Afin d’aider à la caractérisation des pathologies des sujets immatures, le CRAHAM a mené de 2020 à 2022 le programme de recherche ANCESTOR en collaboration avec la plate-forme d’imagerie CYCERON, le centre de microscopie CMABio3, le laboratoire CRISMAT et en partenariat avec La Fabrique de patrimoines en Normandie. Cette recherche, financée par l’Union européenne dans le cadre du programme opérationnel FEDER/ FSE 2014-2020, avait pour objectif d’obtenir des protocoles fiables d’analyse de pathologies osseuses, de troubles de croissance et de pathologies carentielles des enfants entre 0 et 5 ans. Envisagé pour constituer une aide à une meilleure évaluation paléopathologique des populations normandes de l’Antiquité à la période moderne, ce programme a permis de constituer un référentiel ostéologique s’appuyant sur la complémentarité des examens macroscopiques, radiographiques, microtomographiques et histologiques. Par la mise en place d’un protocole descriptif standardisé, nous avons cherché à identifier le pouvoir prédictif de l’aspect de surface du périoste sur les aspects osseux visibles par radiographie, microtomographie et histologie. Pour cela, nous nous sommes appuyés sur un corpus de 39 individus décédés avant l’âge de 3 ans et inhumés dans des cimetières normands médiévaux et modernes. Les résultats montrent que les descriptions macroscopiques sont faiblement associées aux autres descriptions et que la combinaison de plusieurs méthodes d’analyse est indispensable pour établir un lien entre l’aspect de surface et les modifications tissulaires. Ces résultats permettront d’orienter les choix méthodologiques dans l’optique d’élaborer un modèle interprétatif logiciste de diagnostic utilisable par la communauté archéo-anthropologique pour l’identification de maladies ou de carences osseuses des sujets immatures.

Abstract

International audience; Two series of poly (3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBHV) and poly (3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBHHx) with different amounts of hydroxyvalerate (HV) and hydroxyhexanoate (HHx) units are compared. The influence of chemical composition on the molecular mobility in quenched samples is discussed, as well as the consequences on the aptitude to crystallize and the microstructures developed during cold-crystallization. In both quenched PHBHV and PHBHHx, Tg decreases as the content of comonomer unit increases. The HHx units (propyl side-groups) are better molecular spacers and produce a stronger Tg shift as compared to the HV units (ethyl side-groups). Copolymerization has no striking effect on the width of the glass transition and the cooperativity length in quenched samples, but in cold-crystallized samples the glass transition is dramatically broadened. When the fully amorphous copolymers are heated from the glassy state to room temperature, crystallization occurs but is largely disrupted, suggesting that the molecular environment in the amorphous phase is significantly changed. The HHx units, which are excluded from the host crystals, delay and slow down the crystallization kinetics in a stronger way as compared to the HV units, which can partially co-crystallize. The obtained crystalline phases are prone to reorganization and the residual amorphous phases appear to have strong differences in composition and large density fluctuations. A practical consequence is that microstructures with different coupling between phases, and thus different properties and stability over time, can be obtained by controlling the nature and content of the comonomer units.

Abstract

International audience; The aim of this systematic review was to examine the effects of foot orthoses on gait kinematics and low back pain (LBP) in individuals with leg length inequality (LLI). This review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines and has been undertaken in the PubMed-NCBI, EBSCO Host, Cochrane Library, and ScienceDirect databases. Inclusion criteria were the analysis of kinematic parameters during walking or LBP before and after foot orthosis use in patients with LLI. Ultimately, five studies were retained. We extracted the following information: study identity, patients, type of foot orthosis, duration of orthopedic treatment, protocols, methods, and data to assess gait kinematics and LBP. The results showed that insoles seem to reduce pelvic drop and active compensations of the spine when LLI is moderate/severe. However, insoles do not always seem to be efficient in improving gait kinematics in patients with low LLI. All of the studies noted a significant reduction of LBP with use of insoles. Consequently, although these studies revealed no consensus on whether and how insoles affect gait kinematics, the orthoses seemed helpful in relieving LBP.

Abstract

International audience; Advances in the melt-growth synthesis technique for preparing superconducting REBaCuO bulks allow the production and commercialisation of single crystals with a diameter of about 10 cm. This is in close agreement with the development of new applications such as electric motors where superconducting bulks are used as trapped field magnets or magnetic screens [1], [2]. It is then crucial to determine the superconducting properties such as critical temperature, critical current density and irreversible magnetic field, which is usually done using MPMS-SQUID on a millimetre size sample. In this study, the characterisation of a 10 cm wide commercial bulk machined for use as a magnetic shield is presented, see Fig. 1. 24 orthorhombic samples were extracted at different positions from the centre of the bulk, prepared and measured on a 14 T MPMS with a VSM head. A comparison of the superconducting properties of each sample will be presented together with the trapped field measurements performed on 10 other wide REBaCuO bulks. This will provide an opportunity to discuss the state of the art of this technology and its possible future development and will highlight the need to measure superconducting properties in different positions.
